- 0:00Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the Three O Take, where we talk
- 0:04all things Major League Baseball.
- 0:06Here's Kyle Corwin and Nate Reyes.
- 0:10It all starts right now. Welcome back to the Three O Take
- 0:16presented by Sea Geek. This is episode 411.
- 0:19I'll be your host, Kyle Cord, and I'm here with my Co host,
- 0:21Nate Reyes and the return of our good friend, a gentleman's
- 0:27gentleman, Ryan Ripken. Guys, how we doing?
- 0:31Feeling good, you guys. It's been a while.
- 0:33It's been a hot minute. Happy 2024, by the way.
- 0:36Right now. Happy 2024.
- 0:38It's It still doesn't feel right.
- 0:40It still doesn't feel it's This is strange.
- 0:42Yeah, I I feel like there's, I know there's that period where
- 0:45you're allowed to say Happy New Year to somebody and now we're
- 0:48in February. We're weeks past that, I know.
- 0:50But, but I mean, I I you know what my rule is if you haven't
- 0:53seen the person yet in a while. I know, like, we've texted, but
- 0:55we haven't had a had a chance to talk.
- 0:57Here's the time. Like, hey, happy 2024 guys.
- 1:01Hey, happy 2024, I think. The bigger news that obviously,
- 1:03is that, like, all right, it's February and then baseball is
- 1:06happening this month. Wild.
- 1:08It's just in the snap. Of a I don't.
- 1:10Yeah. How are you doing post Ravens?
- 1:14Are you doing OK? Did we?
- 1:16Did. Is that really what you wanted
- 1:17to open this with? I wanted to open with it.
- 1:19I just wanted to write it. It's a temperature check, that's
- 1:21all. This how's.
- 1:22Raven Rye doing. Raven Rye is that was tough.
- 1:25I or I I tell people that the Ravens have had some tough
- 1:30playoff losses and the one was Billy Cundiff in 2011.
- 1:34Twelve season, the Ravens went from a drop touchdown pass to
- 1:39then a missed field goal to then, you know, being eliminated
- 1:42all in a span of like 30 seconds.
- 1:43But who who remembers those moments?
- 1:46That was the most shocking. I think Sunday's was the most
- 1:48painful. But you know what?
- 1:50Baltimore's had a wild week. Guys, like, talk about a roller
- 1:53coaster of emotions for Baltimore sports, yeah.
- 1:57True. So with all the disappointing
- 2:01end of the season with the Ravens, I think for some made-up
- 2:05for it with with just the wild ride that has been the Baltimore
- 2:09Orioles offseason really over a span of 48 hours.
- 2:15I'm a fan. It's it sucks to say it out
- 2:18loud. I'm a fan of how things have
- 2:23what is going on. I don't even know.
- 2:25Like there's more action in Baltimore offseason than 90% of
- 2:30the league. I would say the vibes are higher
- 2:33in Baltimore than even like LA, because with LA, it was the most
- 2:38predictable thing. You you saw that coming from a
- 2:41mile away. They've been building up to
- 2:43these moves for the last, like, year and a half.
- 2:46But to get the update, and I'm Ryan, you even said you're a
- 2:50little bit blindsided, kind of caught you off guard to get the
- 2:52update. You're like, this is what Raven
- 2:55or this is what Orioles fans have been clamoring for for a
- 2:58long time. And it's like it it happened, it
- 3:03it manifested. There are so many things to
- 3:05unpack in on that. So you know, if it's going from
- 3:09the whole news about, you know, the Orioles being sold and I was
- 3:13giving lessons, You know, I try on days where I'm not doing my
- 3:16media work, I try to work and help the next generation.
- 3:20Right. Guys, you know, people helping
- 3:21people. And I am doing lessons for like
- 3:246 straight hours. And during it I have my phone
- 3:27down and all of a sudden I get like the, the, the news.
- 3:30OK, Rubenstein is in agreement to buy a team like, OK, you
- 3:34know, put the phone down. Then another person comes in is
- 3:36like, oh, hey, like big thing for for for your family.
- 3:41I'm like what what are what are we discussing here?
- 3:45And then I saw the other report that came out that said my dad
- 3:48was going to be involved potentially in the new deal.
- 3:50But so many things that unpack there.
- 3:54But yes, blindsided was an understatement as far as what I
- 3:57was trying to do. And then I always I need to get
- 4:00better at answering my text messages at one point guys my or
- 4:04currently still my phone is at 1076 messages.
- 4:07I'm I'm still very overwhelmed with what's with what's
- 4:10transpired. That'll never get to 0, right?
- 4:13Never. I mean, how how many people has
- 4:16that divvied up amongst? Is that like just, is that just
- 4:19me and Nate just blowing you up in the group text And that's
- 4:21like people, 9595% of the. Text.
- 4:25Yeah, you guys might account for half of it right now. the IT
- 4:29definitely. The people that I hadn't heard
- 4:31from in a long time reached out. New stations reached out.
- 4:37You name it, someone reached out.
- 4:39So it was just I didn't have a lot of time to react because
- 4:44again, like I just want to when I'm working or doing something,
- 4:46I got to focus on that. I'm not a great multitasker.
- 4:49But also I I want to spend time with the people that that are,
- 4:52you know, making the time to come work with me.
- 4:54So then that happens and then a couple days, you know, 48 hours
- 4:57later finish a live show that I do here in the studio that I
- 5:01have and I'm about to go home and what happens?
- 5:04Corbin Burns, he's getting traded to Baltimore.
- 5:07Holy shirts and pants. I got to go live again and talk
- 5:11about it. So I did.
- 5:12And. But there's so much excitement
- 5:14around the team. Right.
- 5:15So I think that that's that's the big part of it.
- 5:18To your point, the Dodgers. Everyone knows the Dodgers are
- 5:20going to spend money for the Orioles.
- 5:22They're waiting for that first move and it happened.
- 5:24And now the AL ES are minus the Red Sox for vibe check.
- 5:27But like the Yankees vibes are higher and the Orioles are
- 5:30through the roof. And I think we're going to
- 5:32actually see that OS Yankees rivalry was kind of renewed last
- 5:36year. But I think it's going to be in
- 5:38full force here in 2024. Yeah, I need that.
- 5:43I need. I need some OS Yankees Heat in
- 5:462024. That's a that's a fun.
- 5:49That's a fun. Rivalry, that is a fun one.
- 5:51It's it's low key. The whole like ghost of Babe
- 5:55Ruth. The whole, you know what I mean?
- 5:57Like all that stuff coming back out the house that Ruth built,
- 6:01like all these, you know, the original home of Ruth.
- 6:05Like all these things that come back out of it.
- 6:06I like it. I'm here for it.
- 6:08I I think, I think, I think, you know you see like interdivision
- 6:13rivalries that can grow at times.
- 6:15You know what I mean? And and I think like for us to
- 6:18I, I baseball fans can't hold the Red Sox and Yankees at that
- 6:22standard of what we grew up watching.
- 6:24Like I don't I don't see that ever returning in my mind.
- 6:29So it's cool to see like a a potential new division, inner
- 6:33division rivalry grow a little bit and maybe be rekindled if
- 6:38you will so. I I what I think also too is and
- 6:41maybe this is what makes we talked about the AL East has
- 6:44been so competitive over the years right.
- 6:46Best division in baseball last year, no doubt it was.
- 6:49But I think it's that each team in the AL East has been good or
- 6:52solid. I know I made the joke about the
- 6:54Red Sox Kyle and I'm sorry but even for the Red Sox they
- 6:57compete. Even if it's a down year which
- 6:58right now it's not as optimistic as you'd want to be as a Red Sox
- 7:02fan. Just if we're going to be honest
- 7:04about it, but each team is solid and you're seeing this
- 7:09competitive drive like the Yanks and Rays going at it.
- 7:12In the past, the Blue Jays and Orioles have had this new type
- 7:15of bitterness towards each other.
- 7:18I love it. I'm for that.
- 7:19And you don't want your division rivals and especially the fact
- 7:22that there's less divisional games guys.
- 7:24Those ones. We talked about it more and it's
- 7:26like, yeah, we only play you guys, you know, X amount of
- 7:29times you know now than we used to.
- 7:33We got to be ready to go. And yeah, who doesn't like a
- 7:37little rivalry in sports? I personally, I love it.
- 7:40You don't want to love the other team.
- 7:41Come on now, It's not fun. Yeah, it's not fun.
- 7:44No fun. Ryan, from your perspective,
- 7:46this, this sale, how does this impact?
- 7:51I mean, I already alluded to it with, you know, this is
- 7:55something that Orioles fans have been claiming for for a long
- 7:57time. But from your specific
- 7:59perspective, how does this affect morale amongst the fans,
- 8:04amongst the city, amongst even the team heading into 2024?
- 8:08Especially what days before the the Corbin Burns move?
- 8:14Like just a lot of good things moving in the right direction.
- 8:17Does this? Does this sale?
- 8:18Does the timing of this sale change morale heading into 2020?
- 8:22Four, I I think morale was going to be high no matter what
- 8:27because this is a, you know, extremely exciting team, right?
- 8:32So the Orioles are their goal. Nothing for the 2024 season, if
- 8:38you're a player or organization fan has changed.
- 8:40You're going to, you're going to try to repeat his AL ES chance,
- 8:43But regardless, get to the postseason, try to make a deeper
- 8:46run. That's the goal, hasn't changed.
- 8:48And I do want to say with this, I know people have had their
- 8:51feelings, you know, documented with what's happened with with
- 8:55Baltimore ownership, whatever it may be, right?
- 8:58But I do want people to to understand and give credit.
- 9:01Where credit's due, especially Jon Angelo's bringing in
- 9:04Michael, is to come in and really transform this
- 9:08organization. I know people can feel how
- 9:11they've wanted to and again, that that's not my place and
- 9:14that's not my opinion, but I but you're it'd be.
- 9:17I'd be fond on deaf ears to not hear other noise.
- 9:20You guys know exactly what's been said, but you brought
- 9:24someone in that completely changed what the Orioles were
- 9:29going to embody and look look like moving forward.
- 9:31So it's been tremendous. Now, as far as what it means, if
- 9:34this goes through, it'll be a new chapter in Baltimore.
- 9:37There hasn't been an ownership change in three decades.
- 9:41And what the morale part I think, which would be exciting,
- 9:44is it's if it's a new chapter, it's a new chapter going in,
- 9:47which could be the golden age of Baltimore baseball, something
- 9:51that hasn't happened if you're looking back to like the 70s,
- 9:55the 80s. I mean, guys, I've documented
- 9:58this since 1983. The Orioles been to the playoffs
- 10:00six times in 40 years. It feels like right now this is
- 10:06for fans. This is something that, like it
- 10:08could be a perfect storm of success, both at on the field
- 10:13and organizationally, that ultimately can really help shape
- 10:17even the city of Baltimore. Where are we at with?
- 10:22Breaking. News that's so insane.
- 10:26We're gonna come back to this real quick, Ryan, did you by
- 10:28chance see the see the update? No.
- 10:32It's one of 1700 and yeah. That was.
- 10:37That was, yeah, that was silly me to ask.
- 10:39Jeff Passan, shortstop, Bobby Witt Junior and the Kansas City
- 10:42Royals are in agreement on an 11 year, $288.7 million contract
- 10:48extension. Pay that man.
- 10:50Pay that man. They did.
- 10:52I love that dude. He's a stud.
- 10:55He's really good. Are the Royals gonna, like, mess
- 10:57around and win? Hale Central and it's hard to
- 10:59believe. It's up for grabs, but.
- 11:01Are the Royals gonna mess around and win the whole thing?
- 11:06Might as well win the whole damn thing, but I'm happy about that.
- 11:08I love that more teams are taking that chance to do that.
- 11:12So what will? How old would Bobby be then?
- 11:14After 11 years? He'll be 3132.
- 11:18I'm like 33. 30. Looking it up now, he's. 23 so
- 11:24he's 343434. Yeah, interesting.
- 11:28But again, this is the dilemma when people are offered, when
- 11:30they say offer extensions. Bobby Wood is taking the money
- 11:33now and if he played well over the next three years or so, he
- 11:36could have played into a bigger contract.
- 11:38But 200 Shady $1,000,000 some good money, some good money.
- 11:42Good for the Royals for forking that out, too, just because
- 11:44that's an organization that typically wouldn't take those
- 11:47steps. And so I love that.
- 11:49Like, you can lock that down and create a cornerstone and start
- 11:52to build around it, which they're trying to do.
- 11:54Like I we talked about it last week.
- 11:55I I like what the Royals are doing.
- 11:57I I think Pasquantino needs more attention.
- 12:00I think the veterans that they've added in the offseason.
- 12:03So like, I I'm excited for what the Royals are doing.
- 12:06I'm not going to sit here and say they're going to run away
- 12:09with the Central or anything, but like at the very least you
- 12:12can start selling jerseys and like having a name for the
- 12:15franchise for the next decade. But, and I also think that,
- 12:19like, he's got a skill set that I don't think is going to
- 12:24diminish throughout that contract.
- 12:27You know what I mean? The defense and the speed.
- 12:31The pop is only going to get better.
- 12:32He's only going to get stronger. He's going to settle into like a
- 12:34man's body here in the next couple years and you're going to
- 12:37see some pop really show up. So I'm a fan.
- 12:41I'm a fan. I wanted to ask you just to put
- 12:43a like a a a final pin on the on the sale and everything.
- 12:49I don't know if you got more questions, Kyle, but like for
- 12:51baseball fans outside of the Baltimore area and just outside
- 12:54other fan bases. I know that there's these
- 12:57conversations of a lot of these ballparks trying to build more
- 13:01of an environment and atmosphere around the park and have
- 13:05restaurants and like shops and like spend the day around the
- 13:08park before a game. I heard that there are rumors a
- 13:12few months ago that Camden was trying to do something similar
- 13:16with the owner, like new ownership and everything.
- 13:19Do you feel like that's still in play or like, have you heard
- 13:23that? That's part of the rumblings.
- 13:25You know I think I I can't you know speak on what could happen
- 13:30with as far as that and and for everyone that's still wondering
- 13:32this deal for the ownership has to be approved.
- 13:35I believe it's next week at the meetings I think for everything
- 13:37to go through now as far as when people saw the lease of the of
- 13:40the with Camden Yards in the city of Baltimore that had been
- 13:45going on for a long time and in the discussions you're right, it
- 13:48was we is there going to be build more of a fan experience
- 13:52around the area especially of Camden Yards right there and you
- 13:54have M&T Bank Stadium home of the Ravens they share parking
- 13:57lots right, like everything's right there.
- 13:59So I think knowing and seeing what David Rubenstein has
- 14:04accomplished as a businessman, I I no doubt in my mind that will
- 14:08definitely be a conversation. Now will it happen to the
- 14:11extent, who knows. And I will say Baltimore still
- 14:14has some staples that are there that if these moves happen, how
- 14:18would that affect the local businesses that have already
- 14:20been there in that history like Pickles Pub outside of you guys
- 14:23saw it, that place is bumping and that that atmosphere I never
- 14:27wanted to change. So I and I think that that's
- 14:30also what makes Baltimore that that part special.
- 14:33So I think if you're going to end up doing something like
- 14:35that, how do you have it be where it fits with what your
- 14:39teams want to do? But, and the other part of it is
- 14:42when you have another professional team involved and
- 14:44you have the city involved and you have the governor of
- 14:46Maryland involved, like all this is already making my head spin.
- 14:49My head's been spinning a lot. So.
- 14:52If anything, this is not something that's going to be an
- 14:54immediate thing at all. It's going to be so long the
- 14:58Ravens. The Ravens did announce actual
- 15:00renovations, though, towards M&T Bank Stadium.
- 15:04So yes, I think that the Orioles are going to look at all
- 15:07different areas to make people and fans that come to the games
- 15:11have an overall experience. That is definitely going to be,
- 15:14in my mind, a priority. But building what other places
- 15:17have, we're gonna have to wait and see what that's gonna look
- 15:19like. Have you been like personally,
- 15:22have you been to like like truest?
- 15:24I haven't or anything like that. No.
- 15:26That's sick. It's so it's like a mini
- 15:28Nashville. It's like a it's just this
- 15:30little town that's. It feels like it's a part of the
- 15:33ballpark and like shops and, you know, like to walk into a full
- 15:37Mizuno store and sit in a big leather glove.
- 15:40Like there's there's a lot of cool things that I think would
- 15:44like really. And like all three of us had
- 15:47grown up going to Camden Yards and like just attending it
- 15:51countless times. It's just, it sounds awesome to
- 15:53be able to have some type of experience added in.
- 15:56But yeah, that's all I was wondering.
- 15:59I mean, I I don't know if we're gonna have a Mizuno glove
- 16:02sitting down somewhere, You know, you have a do you have a
- 16:04Photo, by the way, of that? I do.
- 16:06I'll send it to you. It's a sick.
- 16:08I got it. So you're gonna have to read it
- 16:09though if I send it to you. All right.
- 16:11I'll open it. Yeah.
- 16:15Speak. Speaking of head spinning.
- 16:16Sorry I had to get the Wit post out.
- 16:20Did we adequately cover the Corbin Burns?
- 16:24Dude, talk to me about that. What do you guys want to know?
- 16:30I mean, does this does this satisfy the itch of a frontline
- 16:36starter that the Orioles were hoping for?
- 16:38Absolutely. I mean, you just got one of the
- 16:40top ten starting pitchers in baseball.
- 16:42I could even argue he could be a top five if he's the Corbin
- 16:45Burns. That was the Cy Young Corbin
- 16:47Burns. If you're going to go over his
- 16:48last four years. His down year was last year and
- 16:51it was a 339 ERA. The previous three years he had
- 16:54a sub 3. ERAI think what?
- 16:57What I love about it is when you look at this Orioles pitching
- 17:01staff, bradish stud Grayson Rodriguez, stud John Means has
- 17:05proven All Star stud Dean Kramer's now your 5th starter
- 17:09and Dean is a dog. That's my guy too.
- 17:11So right now you're looking at it and going, man, this is a
- 17:14very deep rotation and you add a guy like Corbin Burns, and the
- 17:17bigger thing I should take away is he's been now in the league
- 17:21for six years or so. I think is roughly that this,
- 17:25the one thing the Orioles pitching staff has been lacking
- 17:28is someone that has been a starter for that long.
- 17:30And now you have one of those guys that is a workhorse.
- 17:33He's pitched around 200 innings over the last few seasons, and
- 17:37now you have a chance then to lead an already talented team,
- 17:41talented starting rotation. It's just tremendous.
- 17:44Now, the biggest thing is health, right?
- 17:45You need to stay healthy. And that's that is for every
- 17:50pitch we saw with the Yankees last year, right.
- 17:53You know Rodin's injury sending him back, he wasn't the same.
- 17:56You know, even when he came back.
- 17:58It's it's an uphill battle if you aren't healthy to start the
- 18:00season. I don't.
- 18:01And Verlander too, right? Like guys that that are going to
- 18:04deal with injuries. It's going to take time and it's
- 18:06harder to kind of get in a rhythm.
- 18:09So it it's monumental. I'm not going to say it's I
- 18:13still think the Yankees good. Let the Yankees be favored in
- 18:16the AL East, and I do think the Yankees are going to have a
- 18:18great year but for the Orioles. Now, if everyone stays healthy,
- 18:21you're looking at a staff that went from one of the best in the
- 18:24American League to now going, this is one of the best Staffs
- 18:28in the entire in in in the entire Major League Baseball,
- 18:32you know, National League, American League, you name it.
- 18:35The birds are going to be buzzing.
- 18:38Take take Corbin out of the the picture here of the of what's
- 18:42left of that rotation. Who do you think has the most
- 18:45surprising in a good way, 2024? In the rotation, I'm really
- 18:52hopeful that John Means shows that he is gets back to an All
- 18:57Star form because especially as a left-handed pitcher and what
- 19:01he is capable of doing. I think that if he to me is kind
- 19:04of sex actors, I'll put this in. I think Kyle Braddish and
- 19:07Grayson Rodriguez, again, all health aside, those guys are
- 19:11going to continue to pitch at a high level I think.
- 19:13So you have Grayson, Kyle and Corbin who I'm counting on
- 19:17having really good years. You add in a guy like John Means
- 19:20and if he's healthy going man, you have four guys in my mind
- 19:24that could be All Stars and I think Dean could even be that
- 19:26guy too. I think that's what's so crazy.
- 19:30But it's going to be that back end.
- 19:31It's going to be a Means or Dean Kramer.
- 19:32If one of those guys has a really good year it's it's this
- 19:37is I have I don't remember this a staff like this that has been
- 19:41this deep in a while so it it's it's exciting to say the least.
- 19:45But I'm going to go with John Means because means he's been
- 19:48through a lot having to be left off the post season roster too
- 19:51because of some elbow inflammation and soreness that
- 19:55always worries you. And the guys love him, so I'm
- 19:59really helpful for him And he's a great guy.
- 20:00So who doesn't want to see a great guy do well?
- 20:03Kyle, you know? Who doesn't want to see the OS
- 20:06have a solid, solid encore? Well, I think a lot of people
- 20:10that are in the American League East would not want to see that,
- 20:13but. I I see.
- 20:15I don't think the list is as long as you think it is Red Sox
- 20:19fans. We're just.
- 20:21You're just along for the ride. We're.
- 20:22Just along for the ride, Rays fans are the the the handful
- 20:30that exists. They're just happy to be here.
- 20:33Jays fans, I don't think, have had the fortune of taking their
- 20:37team seriously in a handful of years.
- 20:40Yeah. Ever since Vladi sent him to an
- 20:44early grave with his his movie comments.
- 20:46But I don't. I don't think the list is as
- 20:49long as you might think, right? I I really don't.
- 20:51Is court burns under control? So this is his last year I
- 20:55believe. Yeah, he's got one year.
- 20:57Left. And I think the other part of it
- 20:58is, and correct me if I'm wrong about who his agent is, is it
- 21:01Scott Boris? Is he a Boris guy?
- 21:05He might be. Possibly.
- 21:06So he's hitting the market for sure.
- 21:08Well, and I will I. The other part when people go
- 21:10wait a minute, is it a rental? What's going to happen If you
- 21:12trade for a guy, you're going to get the first chance to convince
- 21:15him to stay, and I think that's for the Baltimore Orioles, and
- 21:18he's in his prime. He's 29 years old and we're
- 21:20seeing now with elite starting pitchers, if you're able to take
- 21:24care of yourself and be able to continue to evolve as a pitcher
- 21:29as you get older, you can pitch into your late 30s and even 40s
- 21:32for some guys. He's in that.
- 21:34Guy, by the way. At 29, at 29, he's only had
- 21:39three full like full seasons as far as innings go, you know what
- 21:43I mean? Like it was 160 and then 200 and
- 21:46then 190 last year. So like the first three years of
- 21:49his career, he didn't have a lot of wear and tear going.
- 21:52So I think he plays down to like a younger 29.
- 21:55So I could see a good five or six, maybe seven-year deal for
- 21:59him. But I'm, I'm curious to see how
- 22:02well the numbers go being in, you know, Milwaukee's kind of a
- 22:08a little bit of a box. So it's like now that we're
- 22:10expanding the outfield, we got a little bit more room in left
- 22:13field in Baltimore. It's like I'm interested to see
- 22:16where his numbers go, being able to probably keep the ball in the
- 22:20ballpark even more so. Yeah, I mean, I think what also
- 22:25is going to be interesting, you're right, like Baltimore,
- 22:28since they put the Great Wall in a Baltimore in in left field, it
- 22:31really has changed the dynamic for for pitchers and hitters at
- 22:34Camden Yards. So a guy like Burns, a guy that
- 22:38that is with a young exciting team, you brought up the age it
- 22:41just with a young team too. You're right.
- 22:43So if if he is feeling good, it just seems like it could be a
- 22:46perfect match. And I do think the Orioles will
- 22:48be aggressive to try to keep him, but if it doesn't work out,
- 22:51then you let him walk. And you know that is what it is.
- 22:55But I think Corbin Burns is still going to be a guy for
- 22:58years to come. And I think that people in the
- 23:01NL Central really understood how good he was.
- 23:04But maybe around baseball they that's why I'd say like I say
- 23:07top ten. But he really is to me when he's
- 23:09on, he is a top five pitcher. But I don't think people view
- 23:12him that way because of playing in Milwaukee.
- 23:15But now he's going to have the chance.
- 23:16You were going to go against and I was going to make you feel
- 23:19good, Nate. But you know, DeSoto and Judge,
- 23:23those are two in my mind, two of the top five hitters in baseball
- 23:26and you, as far as what they're capable.
- 23:27Of doing in top 10. Yeah, so like you're going to go
- 23:32again. You're going against guys
- 23:34consistently in the American League East and and for the
- 23:37Orioles, they need a guy like that.
- 23:40And if he shoves it against some of the best players in the
- 23:42world, which I expect him to to be great.
- 23:45We're going to hear the the drum beat louder for Corbin Burns.
- 23:48But if it does, we thought Blake Snell was getting a big contract
- 23:52this offseason. Whenever it is Corbin, Burns is
- 23:54gonna be through the damn roof. I feel like Corbin's got to be
- 23:58excited at the prospect of having AI mean I we we know how
- 24:02the Oriole season finished last year, but I would imagine he's
- 24:05got to be excited about the prospect of having a realistic
- 24:09chance to play for a team that's destined for.
- 24:13The. NLCS.
- 24:15Primed. A capped like the Brewers.
- 24:18Nobody's expecting or nobody has really placed the Brewers in
- 24:22that World Series conversation. But the Orioles with the moves
- 24:25they made and and now that he's joining this team making them
- 24:27that much better to know that you have A and I that that has
- 24:31to play into contract extension talks like you were like you're
- 24:35alluding. To Well, you knew it was a dead
- 24:36end in Milwaukee. You know the arbitration, you
- 24:39could tell and that's it's the business side of it.
- 24:41But your feelings can get hurt. And obviously, he didn't like
- 24:44the business of the way that Milwaukee went about it, and
- 24:46some organizations are better at handling that than other.
- 24:49But for those that don't know about arbitration, it's step.
- 24:51It's essentially you're arguing why you're why you should get
- 24:55paid this much, and the team's trying to tell you why you
- 24:57shouldn't get paid that much like that.
- 24:59That's the argument. It's a weird.
- 25:01Stupidest system in. Yeah, like so and so like you're
- 25:04trying to break down and I think they even said, you know, Corbin
- 25:07said that the Brewers were saying, well, you know, not
- 25:10blaming him for the reason why they lost games, but they could
- 25:12have won more if he had done more.
- 25:13And it's like, well, yeah, that's a bold statement here.
- 25:16I think like, you know, and so overall the business of it,
- 25:22Corbin Burns could have an opportunity.
- 25:23And again, we just mentioned that playing the AL East, this
- 25:27is a great chance to showcase his skills And you are with the
- 25:30team now where like I said, it's a contagious energy.
- 25:34You heard about team people coming to Baltimore last year of
- 25:36saying, you know, Kyle Gibson has been around a lot of teams.
- 25:39He said it was a very exciting, brought his love for the game
- 25:43back. It's a very hungry group and
- 25:45they're very passionate and right now you feel like the
- 25:47window for the Baltimore Orioles is now open and and like we
- 25:51said, this is a a window. You don't think it's a one year
- 25:54thing. So you can definitely try to
- 25:55convince him. But again, money talks, and that
- 26:00will be another conversation that's gonna have to be had,
- 26:02because the Orioles do have a lot of guys that they're going
- 26:06to have to consider. That's, that's what I was going
- 26:08to say, like list of priority wise, you know what I mean?
- 26:10You have Gunner, you have Holiday, you have Adly, you have
- 26:13guys that are going to need money and it's like you know how
- 26:18much seniority is going to come into play now with A1 guy that's
- 26:22front of the rotation. And you talk about Grayson, you
- 26:25talk about Bradish, like you talk about guys that are going
- 26:28to be core guys. It's like it's hard to imagine
- 26:33forking over money to Corbin Burns first when you still have
- 26:36those guys that are obviously fan favorites and home grown.
- 26:40Oh yeah, well the other part of it too is you brought up Gunner
- 26:42and Jackson who is their agent Mr. Scott Boris.
- 26:49So if you think anyone and people were saying it takes two
- 26:52to tango here. By the way the Orioles Michael
- 26:55is even was asked about that in the past like how many times
- 26:57have you reached out to Scott Boris so like well multiple
- 27:01times you know a week a day you know and and he's going to get
- 27:05the most out of it So it it's going to be a process here.
- 27:09The one guy you guys heard me talk about Gunner Henderson
- 27:11ain't going anywhere. Like I will I will tackle Gunner
- 27:14from leaving Baltimore if I have to because I truly do believe
- 27:18when it's all said and done I've watched this this is a bold
- 27:20claim they've had. They have statues outside of
- 27:22Camden Yards. If he resigns in Baltimore he's
- 27:25going to be the next one to have a statue out there.
- 27:27That's just how high I am on Gunner Henderson.
- 27:30The kids different. He's special and and as good as
- 27:34he was last year, it's not even close to as good as he can be
- 27:37and that's scary. Let's let's switch gears here.
- 27:42As as much as I know Ryan would love to talk OS for the next,
- 27:47well, you you probably are for it.
- 27:49Once you hop off with us, you're probably going to be talking OS
- 27:53for the rest of the day because. We talking some other I, I, I
- 27:56love just talking shop in general guys.
- 27:58Doesn't have to be about the Orioles.
- 28:00Come on. You know, last year we talked
- 28:02about whatever, but you guys just claim that I'm the
- 28:04Baltimore guy. You know you are.
- 28:07You are Baltimore Rye. Well, I like that.
- 28:10And honestly, like if there ever was a time to tacos, this would
- 28:12be the time to. Do it now.
- 28:14But let's put a let's put a bow on this Bobby Witt talk.
- 28:17Some more details are coming in. Jeff Passan followed up his
- 28:20announcement tweet saying that his deal with the Royals has opt
- 28:26out after the 7th, 8th, 9th, and 10th years of his 11 year
- 28:30contract. He says it also includes a
- 28:32three-year club option that can take the total value of the deal
- 28:36to 14 years and 377.7 million. OK, so it popped out after the
- 28:429th year. 7th, 8th, 9th and 10th years.
- 28:46So 303132. Oh wow.
- 28:52I really like that deal even more for Bobby.
- 28:55But it is back loaded to say hey we got we got three more years
- 29:00for you taking you into 3637 years old which we've seen now
- 29:05baseball now it's like the later free agents those guys are not
- 29:08getting multi year deals. It's a, you know, they're lucky
- 29:12to have two year deal at 34, so this is a smart deal on both
- 29:17sides. I like it.
- 29:18And I like the creativity. You saw that with Julio
- 29:20Rodriguez as far as the creativity for the incentives
- 29:23and the years and the options for Bobby Witt.
- 29:26And if it is 7, he'll be 3031. And in that case, we saw Manny
- 29:31Machado last year get another $300 million or 350, whatever it
- 29:34is. Manny's feeling good, by the
- 29:36way. That's like, what, $650 million
- 29:38over his last two contracts? Not bad but that's something
- 29:42that's going to be appealing. So Bobby would one way or
- 29:44another is going to be in a really good position.
- 29:47I I want to see teams do more of that and for the Royals you talk
- 29:51about having your I know they're spending more but I think we're
- 29:53all in agreement you you got to lock up your guys at some point.
- 29:57The dude just hit 30 jacks last year, you know, and the and the
- 30:00best is probably still yet to come for Bobby Witt.
- 30:02So it's. He's a walking 3030 guy.
- 30:05Yeah, for sure. Agreed.
- 30:08He just tweeted out the jiff from Wolf of Wall Street where
- 30:11he says I'm not leaving Little. Handshake emoji.
- 30:15Little. Handshake emoji and tagged the
- 30:18Royals and said I'm not leaving. Love that friend of the pod,
- 30:21Bobby Witt. There was a tweet as I'm just
- 30:24scrolling through the timeline here.
- 30:25There was a tweet from Danny Vietti, a good follow, he said.
- 30:31Bobby Witt Junior will be in Kansas City for the next decade.
- 30:34Julio Rodriguez, who we just mentioned, will be in Seattle
- 30:36for the next decade. Fernando Tatis Junior will be in
- 30:39San Diego for the next decade and Corbin Care will be in
- 30:42Arizona for nearly the next decade, he said.
- 30:44This is great for baseball. And I have to agree 100%.
- 30:48Yeah, I I would like. I think when we see around other
- 30:51professional sports where guys are jumping, stars are jumping
- 30:55from team, not just because of how the structure is in the NFL,
- 30:59some of your stars stay, but after five years, you move on
- 31:02the shelf. Life's different, right?
- 31:03NBA, It feels like people are like, Yep, I want to get traded
- 31:06and you go somewhere else. I love that people can get
- 31:09traded. To think going to other places
- 31:11and free agency is exciting, but man, isn't it also great to have
- 31:16guys have roots in the cities and players then can?
- 31:20That's like the loyalty of fan bases.
- 31:22They love seeing the loyalty from players.
- 31:25I think your family has has a little bit of a a connection to
- 31:30that a loyalty logic. So I no I mean I I definitely
- 31:34agree last last last episode we I was just talking about how I
- 31:37hate one year deals and like I understand this part of the
- 31:40business especially as guys get later in their career but it
- 31:43it's just hard and I use Justin Turner as an example.
- 31:45It's hard for me to get excited over a guy like Justin Turner
- 31:48knowing and I said it before I said it last year I said he's
- 31:51not going to be here after next year and sure enough he goes to
- 31:54Toronto which we'll touch on. But it's I I like especially
- 31:58when these young guys can get locked down and they're they
- 32:02want to stick around for the long haul and you know now that
- 32:05you've got teams like the Royals you've got teams like the D
- 32:07backs locking down the young talent it goes back to the OS
- 32:11There's no excuse for the Orioles to they can't say well
- 32:14we're one of these smaller market teams we we don't have
- 32:16the luxury of locking these these big stars that's the press
- 32:20young stars. Yeah, they they.
- 32:21There's no excuse for them now because you're going to tell me
- 32:24that the D backs are any different.
- 32:26You're going to tell me that the Royals are like, no, the Orioles
- 32:29need to go out and lock their guys down well.
- 32:31I think it the biggest thing for me, I I genuinely think there's
- 32:35going to be some type of restructure with our next
- 32:37agreement. I think there's going to be a
- 32:39divisional restructure. There's going to be teams moved
- 32:42around in different divisions. I think we're going to see some
- 32:44new stuff and a lot of these young guys, their second-half of
- 32:47the contract could look very different.
- 32:50Bobby Witt may no longer be in the AL Central with some of
- 32:53these, you know, Tigers and Twins and things.
- 32:55It's going to be different. So I'm interested to see what
- 32:59these guys look like in their prime when baseball potentially
- 33:02has an entirely different look. Yeah, baseball's made a lot of
- 33:06changes, obviously, you know, and and overall, even though if
- 33:11if people had reservations about it, it's been for popularity.
- 33:15It went well this year, like as far as the pitch clock and
- 33:17there's still things that have to be worked out, right?
- 33:19There's still certain components.
- 33:23I'm really curious about the playoff systems if the
- 33:24realignments there's there's so many other things that you are
- 33:29going to have to to see unfold. But one thing that I do think is
- 33:32great again it's if you're talking to brand branding
- 33:34players of the franchise and bringing that excitement about,
- 33:38I think that that's that to me, you're right.
- 33:40Is is so exciting. I think for baseball for so
- 33:42long. If you look back in the early
- 33:432000s and 90s and these rivalries, you can look back at
- 33:47some of these legendary players playing with these teams and
- 33:50having these legendary battles with rivals.
- 33:52So that's the only thing I don't when they read I I'm with you,
- 33:55Nate. Something's coming.
- 33:57But I hope in the process it allows for just these great
- 34:00storylines and memories because that's another part of sports is
- 34:05those those storylines mean a lot and they can even the the
- 34:09and players love that too. You talk, we talk about the
- 34:11Yankees, Red Sox, they love that.
- 34:13The Yankees, Orioles, back in the the 90s.
- 34:15I remember my dad talking about it.
- 34:17They used to live for those moments.
- 34:19So I I never want baseball to lose that type of feeling
- 34:23because those are stuff that those are things that you
- 34:26sometimes can't even. It's generational.
- 34:28Can't quantify. Yeah.
- 34:30Yeah. Exactly.
- 34:33Let's let's transition here. Justin Turner as I mentioned
- 34:39signs a one year deal worth $13 million with the Toronto Blue
- 34:43Jays can make an additional one and a half million in bonuses.
- 34:49Had a had a strong year in Boston and I think that's that's
- 34:54a big a big yeah. I mean, I.
- 34:56Hate the fit? He he was sought after from by
- 35:01by teams that were looking to add a I'm going to say power
- 35:06bat. I mean he's he's definitely not
- 35:09top tier in that regard but he's gonna he's gonna give you some
- 35:11production and stays within the division.
- 35:16But to your point, I'm not. It's there.
- 35:19There have so many guys that are gonna have to rotate through DH
- 35:23and and he's gonna play maybe what, 4050 games at third base
- 35:27Max if he has a full healthy year.
- 35:30I mean, you're. Talking about flat, needing to
- 35:32float in at DH, you have George Springer needing to float in at
- 35:35DH. Like you have guys that you're
- 35:38going to have to rotate through that spot and and that infield
- 35:42is just suddenly looking more and more unathletic if he's
- 35:46playing that often. He can provide you help at third
- 35:50he even he he plugged in at second there for a bit in
- 35:54Boston. So I mean he he can at least
- 35:56give you that but with another year under his belt I I don't
- 35:59know if the willingness to plug him in at 2nd is going to be
- 36:02there for the Blue Jays. So it's it's going to get pretty
- 36:05log jam pretty quick. Well, and usually we're talking
- 36:08about pitchers, the longevity that they have because of what
- 36:11they're being asked to do. It's not the same can be said
- 36:15for for position players, and usually it's more DH work.
- 36:18If guys play into their late 30s and 40s like Justin Turner's
- 36:21doing, he can still swing it and they don't really care as much
- 36:25about the defensive component. But because of that he's
- 36:28probably, he's more limited than he used to be.
- 36:31Still very still a very good player that can contribute with
- 36:35the bat, there's no doubt about it.
- 36:36But a lot of teams like you brought up Nate want versatility
- 36:39and that's going to be something they're going to have to deal
- 36:41with like you know in Baltimore because I can just bring it up
- 36:44with it. The Orioles like to rotate their
- 36:46DH spot and JD Martinez, as I feel like, has been like the
- 36:50since Nelson Cruz and David Ortiz have have come and gone,
- 36:54JD Martinez has become that DH. Really, you don't feel bad about
- 36:57having that guy play every single day because of what he's
- 37:00capable of doing. Other guys like the Orioles were
- 37:03like, we didn't want to give it that spot you.
- 37:05Look at the Yankees having, having to having to beat like
- 37:08it's one hand tied on your back. Having Stanton locked in at DH,
- 37:11you can't rotate. And if that guy has a down year,
- 37:14it's like what do you do? So it's a different it's apples
- 37:18and oranges, just contractually just because it's a one year
- 37:22deal. And Justin Turner isn't that
- 37:23expensive, but it's still it just it pigeonholes you a little
- 37:27bit. Well, it shows that the Blue
- 37:28Jays are still in, you know, they're still in on winning
- 37:30right now and they do have a team like I thought last year,
- 37:33guys. I think the Blue Jays to me,
- 37:35were my my pick to win the division going into the season
- 37:38because of the team that they had, you know, and then it
- 37:42didn't pan out. And here you are again where the
- 37:44window is closing little by little and they're proving
- 37:48they're showing. Hey, he can play.
- 37:50We want to go get him. We're going to still take a
- 37:52crack at this. But I'm with you.
- 37:54I don't know what the long term thing is.
- 37:55It's the short term. Maybe it's a great year in
- 37:57Toronto, but long term wise, is this something that's going to
- 38:01help the Blue Jays? No, it's not.
- 38:03Justin Turner's getting close to the end of his career.
- 38:04It's been a great career. But Toronto?
- 38:09Yeah, go. Ahead do we have a Matt Chapman
- 38:10pick? Now that this is that ERA is
- 38:14done like a landing spot pick. Would would like San Francisco
- 38:21be an option? Yeah, weren't the Giants kind of
- 38:24at the top of that list, at least for the time being?
- 38:27I feel like San Francisco, they feel like all the the reports or
- 38:30or talks from San Francisco, they feel like they just missed
- 38:34out over and over again this offseason, right?
- 38:36So it feels like they got to do something. 3 offseasons, yeah.
- 38:38Yeah, I was going to say beyond just this year.
- 38:41Well, in some cases one of them might have worked out but for
- 38:44not getting involved with it. But they they they're trying to
- 38:47change their culture around too. And they got a it's a solid
- 38:49organization solid team. But that that to me would be the
- 38:53pick. If he goes that, that'd be me,
- 38:55that'd be my I'm. Gonna steal that too.
- 38:58I like that. Regarding personnel moves, I
- 39:04mean there's there's been some other small one year deals some
- 39:10some acquisitions here and there but we'll we'll maybe save those
- 39:16for another time. Other big news, Theo Epstein
- 39:21returning to Boston, there you go, there you go as it as it
- 39:25were he is joining, let me make sure I got this right.
- 39:30He's returning to the organization as a as a minority
- 39:33owner with Fenway Sports Group. So in effect stepping down from
- 39:39his role with Major League Baseball, which I think was
- 39:43forgotten in in this, in this news, like Red Sox fans like, Oh
- 39:47yeah, we got our guy back. But baseball fans as as a whole,
- 39:53I would think, should be like a little bit disappointed not
- 39:56having that guy around the MLB offices anymore.
- 39:59Because he clearly he's shown you that he can change whatever
- 40:03organization or whatever mission that he undertakes.
- 40:08For the for the better and the fact that he's no longer in the
- 40:11offices. I I feel like is a is a hit for
- 40:14or a hit against Major League Baseball.
- 40:17But I'm, as I mentioned, Red Sox fans thrilled to have Theo back.
- 40:22Unfortunately, I don't think it matters.
- 40:24I think this is just another one of their many PR moves where
- 40:29they're just trying to keep the fan base.
- 40:31Well, they're not. They're not trying to keep them
- 40:32happy, but they're trying to make them happy again.
- 40:36Because every lull in between these PR moves, it's just Red
- 40:39Sox fans being completely and utterly pissed off.
- 40:43Right. If you couldn't tell, It's just
- 40:44like a scab that he just keeps peeling off.
- 40:47Every time it starts to heal he peels it off and you see the
- 40:50blood coming out a little bit. Now you know some teams sign a
- 40:54or trade for you know, like a a massive superstar left-handed
- 40:57bat. Some teams trade for an ace in
- 40:59the rotation and some teams just bring back a glory days front
- 41:03office guy who. OK, let's not chalk up Theo
- 41:06Epstein is some like some for the good times.
- 41:11For the memories. Acquisition like Theo Epstein.
- 41:14Is Theo Epstein still? He's not going to have a 980 OPS
- 41:17in the middle of the lineup, I know that.
- 41:18Much he's not. But maybe, just maybe, he can
- 41:22get in the ears of those other guys and say, hey, I can't do
- 41:25it, I can't have a 980 OPS, but let's go out and get a guy.
- 41:28Maybe that can. Maybe.
- 41:30Let's hope not. Likely I'm not.
- 41:32I'm not. I'm not holding.
- 41:33The Mookie would have been great to keep, but you know.
- 41:37Yeah, imagine having that guy on your team, like that guy you
- 41:40would never let walk away, right?
- 41:42I mean. Just I I do.
- 41:44I do take a time when people were like, you ever take a
- 41:46moment to think about what the Red Sox had?
- 41:49I do that from time to time and I'll be like.
- 41:51Oh, thanks. Thanks.
- 41:52Ryan, I know, I know, it's more for you.
- 41:54But I'm sitting there like, man, I look and I keep seeing I go,
- 41:56man, Mookie's still a top five player overall.
- 41:59This is what happened. But I'm like, wait a minute,
- 42:02wow, They were on the Red Sox, all those guys.
- 42:05It's three in the morning. Ryan sits up in a cold sweat.
- 42:08Look. At this movie.
- 42:10'S gonna be in LA for a long time.
- 42:11Yeah, Red Sox really missed out on this guy.
- 42:14Yep, Yep, it's all. Good.
- 42:19No, it's all right, man. I'm, I'm.
- 42:21I hate to say it, but I the last year, year and a half, I feel
- 42:26like I've felt myself evolve more into just like a general
- 42:29baseball fan. I'm still a Red Sox fan.
- 42:31I'm not gonna just completely walk away from the organization,
- 42:34but as a result of them, just completely other baseball.
- 42:40Yeah, and it's been fun. And Silverline, on that note,
- 42:44like last year for example, it was a blast watching the OS do
- 42:46what they did and being able to catch a few games here and there
- 42:49like that was that was a good time.
- 42:51So I joking aside I'm not like yeah it sucks that our our big
- 42:55signing of the year is Theo Epstein and it's in the
- 42:59ownership group. It's not even like bringing him
- 43:01in directly into the the front office if you will.
- 43:04He's not like taking over his GM.
- 43:07So that's our that's our big news this offseason.
- 43:09But so tough it is what it is. I've I'm in like the what is it?
- 43:15The seven stages of of grief or whatever.
- 43:18I don't even know where I'm at. I'm somewhere.
- 43:20I'm somewhere in the middle. It could be a great year.
- 43:22It really could. And you're a good kid, Kyle.
- 43:24Keep your head up. Thanks.
- 43:25Thanks Ryan. I really needed that pick me up.
- 43:27I appreciate you. It wouldn't be the IT wouldn't
- 43:31be a three O take episode if we didn't talk about some jersey
- 43:35adjustments or reveals or leaks or whatever you want to call it.
- 43:39Let me let me send this to you guys so you have it.
- 43:42It's possible leak to the Philly city connect unis and from what
- 43:50I can recall I don't believe that any leak has ever missed
- 43:53like I'm pretty sure every image that we've had come out in one
- 43:58in one capacity or another hasn't it's ended up being that
- 44:03jersey So if that if that holds true we're looking at these
- 44:09being the the Philly city connects and if you don't if you
- 44:11haven't seen them yet just do a quick Google search Philly city
- 44:14connects we got a like a weird gradient going on how do how do
- 44:19we feel about this you. Know what it's?
- 44:24Your ass. Yeah, I I don't.
- 44:25I don't think. I don't know.
- 44:27Come on, Ryan, say. Just say it with your chest.
- 44:30Nate has no issue doing that. Just.
- 44:32This is ass how? Is this supposed to be the
- 44:35Phillies? Yeah, it looks like a.
- 44:40The team that literally has red as essentially their only color?
- 44:46Yeah, they got a little bit of blue, but.
- 44:49Well, they'll have like they do have, like the throwback has
- 44:52like you know the the blue, obviously, but like this to me.
- 44:55You're reaching careful. Did you stretch before you
- 44:58reached? No, I didn't.
- 45:01But but my my point I guess where I was going with this is
- 45:05but this. We'll just keep it short and
- 45:06sweet. Yeah, I I'm not a fan.
- 45:09Not a fan. These are horrendous.
- 45:12This is terrible. What?
- 45:16Who's been interviewing these candidates at Nike and who's
- 45:20actually giving them jobs? That's what I want to know.
- 45:22What? Connection is this to this city?
- 45:27They started out pretty like the the the the campaign.
- 45:30I'll say started out pretty well in terms of connecting to the
- 45:33city, but now we're just throwing together an alternate
- 45:36and shipping it out. With Brewers colors.
- 45:40Yeah, I honestly that was that's a great.
- 45:41I was trying to think about it and why didn't I that that if
- 45:44you told me that's the Milwaukee Brewers go like oh OK, I'm in.
- 45:47I'm in on that Philly out couldn't couldn't be further out
- 45:50the door on it to be honest. It's garbage.
- 45:53It's hey, but somebody's going to like it.
- 45:55Someone will buy it and if it makes them happy, Kyle, I'm
- 45:58happy, but I will not buy it. Atrocious Spring Training hats
- 46:05just dropped today. Ass How?
- 46:12How do they keep getting worse? I hate.
- 46:15These tell me what about this? OK, let's just rule out the ones
- 46:18that are garbage. Houston garbage 2A2 tone.
- 46:24I'm assuming I'm seeing that correctly.
- 46:26A 2 tone orange hat going with like the Creamsicle look
- 46:30garbage. Five of them are yellow, five of
- 46:34them are orange. What can we?
- 46:37Get yellow other parts of the color wheel.
- 46:40Yellow ones are garbage, especially the Rays.
- 46:42That's garbage D backs. While I don't see that as like
- 46:48an on something I'd wear on field, the look of it Solid
- 46:55Rangers big fan, Jays big fan. I like the Cubs one.
- 47:01The real talk here are the Nash Are we seeing a shift away from
- 47:06the Curly W? Slowly but surely, because that
- 47:11that is full on senators. Couldn't Gear could be
- 47:16rebranded? Who?
- 47:17Who knows? You know, it's.
- 47:22The Rockies just don't like to participate in these types of
- 47:24things, you know? The rock.
- 47:27Look at your look in the mirror, Nate.
- 47:29What did the Yankees do? Yankees haven't participated in
- 47:31any kind of creativity when it comes to the.
- 47:34The Rockies at least went with a purple lid.
- 47:37The Yankees, I I saw, I saw a comment on the post and it was
- 47:41the Yankees realizing that the deadline was due today, and then
- 47:43they just threw that out there. That's exactly what happened.
- 47:47Same with the Reds. Ryan, would you, would you buy
- 47:50an O spring training hat? All orange.
- 47:54Yeah, I don't know. I I maybe I'm just, I was told
- 47:58now that I'm not playing, don't wear hats as much because it
- 48:00pushes your hairline up. So I'm trying.
- 48:03I'm trying to wear less hats. It's not going.
- 48:06To I'm trying to fight that dude.
- 48:07I'm. Turning into this.
- 48:08Side I'm on this side of 30 now I'm trying to trying to do what
- 48:12I can to to keep. That I mean, the hat's, the
- 48:14hat's a good look. I love.
- 48:15I love wearing the hat, The orange one, if it was given to
- 48:18me. Absolutely, You know, But I'm
- 48:21gonna just try to force myself to not buy any hats or get a
- 48:25hat, because. It's a It's like a year and a
- 48:29half. We're getting up there.
- 48:31It took like a year and a half to finally get the three O take
- 48:33hat to Ryan back in October. And then it came, most seasoned
- 48:37while I was there. His.
- 48:38First appearance on the pod doesn't wear it and then informs
- 48:41us that he's actively seeking less hats.
- 48:46Well, OK. When I'm.
- 48:47Because I on certain things, when I'm out doing the pregame
- 48:50show, Yeah, I'll wear a hat. It's sunny.
- 48:51Things are going on. Yeah.
- 48:52So I'm like, on this, I'm not going to wear a hat like you
- 48:55guys do. And I tell people when I do the
- 48:57Ryan Ripken show, I'm like, hey, don't wear a hat.
- 48:59Show your face. You know, it's OK.
- 49:03But some of. Us aren't as pretty.
- 49:04Yeah, we're not as handsome as you around.
- 49:06I don't know about that. That's the reality of it.
- 49:08It's compliment. But did I not rock the three O
- 49:10Take Hat during the pregame show?
- 49:12You did, man. That was the show's big time.
- 49:14Pregame show had my glasses on like my 70s disco glasses from
- 49:18the wedding the night before. We were having a time, we're
- 49:21having a time and I was rocking the hat proudly.
- 49:23I was a big fan. I was.
- 49:24I'm glad I finally got one from you guys.
- 49:27Much appreciated. Finally being keyword.
- 49:31Finally, finally, after a year and a half, anything else we
- 49:34need to cover before we get into our?
- 49:35Biggest disappointment is the Reds not having Mustache Guy on
- 49:38there. What are we doing that's Mr.
- 49:40Mustache belongs? They've had that in the past.
- 49:42Yeah, like, what are we doing? That's that's the only time you
- 49:46don't need anything else. How about the Twins going off
- 49:49the radar? I can't find them.
- 49:54They're up top. What is that?
- 49:56Minnesota. Saint Paul.
- 49:57I mean it's different. I'm.
- 49:59I'm here for it as a spring training hat.
- 50:00The cubby is going with the bear.
- 50:02The Royals just, I mean, that's a clean lid.
- 50:05I don't care if spring Training or not, that's.
- 50:06The Mariners one is super clean with the black bill.
- 50:09That is or blue. Bill blooms blue.
- 50:12Yeah, either. Way that's it.
- 50:15Anything else we missed before we get into our Little
- 50:17Unbreakable Records segment that I know Ryan is just thrilled
- 50:21about? Thrilled Well.
- 50:25I mean, right. OK, hear me out.
- 50:27Hear me out. Yeah, I I I texted you before
- 50:31the episode. I said, hey, this is, this is
- 50:33the unbreakable record we're looking at.
- 50:35You hit me immediately with a single throwing up emoji.
- 50:40That's correct. Now put yourself in my put
- 50:43yourself in my shoes. Knowing that this is, many would
- 50:48argue, the most unbreakable record, What other time would we
- 50:53cover this other than the the one time a year we get you on?
- 50:58It seems like whoa, whoa whoa whoa whoa.
- 51:00Whoa, no. OK, Don't, don't, don't you do
- 51:03that. We just talked about we're going
- 51:04to talk more and more. You guys have a different all
- 51:08seasons. That's the goal.
- 51:09That's a little goal for. Yeah, yeah.
- 51:11Yeah. That's, that's from the.
- 51:13Raptors That's on me. I got I got enough crap on on my
- 51:17own show from guys that do not need that from you pal.
- 51:19Let's that hurts. Let's let's rewind that.
- 51:23All right, I take it back. I take it back.
- 51:25I I I said no such thing. You're right.
- 51:27That's our goal for 2024 more episodes to gather more content,
- 51:30more meetups that that it's happening.
- 51:32So what? What would you like me to talk
- 51:34about that streak record? It's not.
- 51:39I'm not. I'm not like, flipping this
- 51:41segment to you being like, hey Ryan, teach us about the I you
- 51:45were on and you you just happened to share the same last
- 51:48name. So I thought, well, if we're
- 51:50gonna, if we're gonna cover it, why not just cover it when
- 51:53Ryan's on? Fair enough.
- 51:55Let's do it. I mean, would you rather talk
- 51:58about Hack Wilson's RBI single season record from like, the
- 52:021800s? No, I wouldn't.
- 52:04And I think, well, the reason why I'm glad I'm on for this
- 52:05because I think you had a stat for something that involved with
- 52:08me. So, yes, well.
- 52:10Oh yeah. Well, I mean, we can just lead
- 52:12off with that. So I.
- 52:13Don't disrespect my boy hack either, by the way.
- 52:15Yeah, sorry. As many of you all know Cal
- 52:17Ripken streak of 2632 games. In the midst of that, our very
- 52:25own Ryan Ripken was born and conveniently just happened to
- 52:30be, on an off day. Yeah, So for the back story of
- 52:33that, yes, I don't remember it, but I do understand it was an
- 52:37off day because the Orioles are going to go play in Toronto and
- 52:41wouldn't have been if if I was born during the season or sorry
- 52:46like during a regular season game scheduled.
- 52:50You know, my dad would have probably missed the game and
- 52:53we'd could you imagine if I was the reason why the streak ended,
- 52:56You know, that would have been brutal.
- 52:59So it. Hold on, has this not like sort
- 53:03of jokes aside, but sort of joking?
- 53:05Has this not been addressed? Like, have you not heard for
- 53:09certain whether or not it would have been a missed game or not?
- 53:13I know that my dad, which I appreciate, wanted to be there
- 53:16for my birth. You know, he wanted to be there
- 53:18and of course that was going to push the really hard decisions
- 53:23and the if the decision was to be there for the the birth of
- 53:29me, that might have caused and ruffled some feathers there.
- 53:33So I'm glad we don't have to. We never had the answer.
- 53:35Yeah, you would. Have been doing from the start.
- 53:37I mean, I'm, I, I, you know, in some cases, you know, I was.
- 53:40But I'm glad, not for that reason.
- 53:42I'm glad that he saw me get born.
- 53:44You know, in this, you know, they say like, you know, take a
- 53:47picture, kiss some babies, take a picture with me, kiss the baby
- 53:50me, and then get on a flight to Toronto.
- 53:52That's that's that's what happened.
- 53:54Does that make you feel better? The more interesting thing I
- 53:57would like to know is that if we rewind 9 months back on the
- 54:00conception, do you think that happened on an off day?
- 54:03You know what I mean if we're really digging into the.
- 54:05I mean, if this is a deep dive, we need to, we need some, we
- 54:09need some answers here Ryan, no. But but seriously, it think
- 54:13about it if you would. Have been When's your birthday?
- 54:16July 26th, 1993. All right.
- 54:20Shout out 93 babies. Let's go.
- 54:23If you seriously, if you would have been the reason the streak
- 54:26ended, Ryan, and we had you on this podcast right now, there'd
- 54:29be eggs hitting your window. I would imagine.
- 54:31Probably still 20 something years later.
- 54:35But people forget it is actually 28 years, like 20.
- 54:39It'll be 29 this year, man. Guys, you just you just like to
- 54:47bring up some moments. But no, I'm glad.
- 54:49I'm glad. October 26th, that's when it
- 54:50happened. That's when it went down, if
- 54:53we're right on nine months by the way.
- 54:55Wild. Didn't think we'd be pulling out
- 54:58the the conception date on this pod, but I'm here.
- 55:01I just searched for you. I just wanted to be on record
- 55:04who who initially brought that up?
- 55:05That was not me. I I I hear you, I know.
- 55:09But thank you for for doing the math on on what year then I
- 55:13would have been conceived Nate. So might be not a problem I
- 55:16might need if. That's the reason you never join
- 55:17this podcast again. I'd.
- 55:19Again, it might be a good out record right now.
- 55:20Be like alright guys, let's where you see ya.
- 55:23I'm out. I'm out.
- 55:24Nate was the reason I did have a question for you, Ryan.
- 55:28I know I've said this already. Jokes aside, as as many baseball
- 55:33fans know, some may not. Ryan Minor was the guy who took
- 55:40the field in place of Calvin the day the streak ended.
- 55:44Have you had the chance to meet Ryan?
- 55:47Ryan. Ryan Miner was my manager in
- 55:51high A, so I got and unfortunately passed away.
- 55:56Lost a battle with cancer recently.
- 56:00Yeah, so he was the guy who replaced my dad on the streak or
- 56:03dad on the streak. And I feel bad because that's a
- 56:05lot of expectations or people look at him for in that light.
- 56:09He's also stud basketball player at Oklahoma, like stud at
- 56:12Oklahoma, got drafted in the NBA, drafted in MLB, like the
- 56:16guy is amazing. And then what?
- 56:18It's just kind of funny how life works sometimes, right?
- 56:20Then you're able to, years later.
- 56:22He's my manager and, you know, it's kind of surreal, but he'd
- 56:27always joke about it. He's like, hey, if your dad ever
- 56:29needs someone to talk about the streak, I'll just go sit in the
- 56:32corner. He can point at me like, then
- 56:33this guy took over. He's the he's a gentle giant and
- 56:36he's like 686768 kept the light and I really wish he had more of
- 56:42a chance to see if he could have played every day when my dad got
- 56:45hurt a couple years later. Yeah it's funny how that works
- 56:48right. You know that happens he's a
- 56:50part of the history and then small world years later in 2019
- 56:53he's my manager and high A and yeah he he he helped me get my
- 56:59confidence back on the field and that's something that I can
- 57:02never thank him enough for. But it was.
- 57:04It's crazy. It's crazy when you think about
- 57:06life in in certain ways and where people that you thought
- 57:09might never people, in this case, people that are
- 57:12intertwined for more reasons than one, love it.
- 57:16Well Ryan, I know you got to you got to head out.
- 57:18So we'll, we'll cut you loose. But I appreciate you hopping on.
- 57:21And again, jokes aside, I thoroughly enjoy when the three
- 57:25of us can get together and talk to.
- 57:26You guys are saying you want to do it again?
- 57:30I'm down. If you would have us.
- 57:32If you would have us. I I would love to to be able to
- 57:36talk ball with you again. But again, if the conception
- 57:38thing was the last, draw that. Might that might have been the
- 57:40last draw. But you know what?
- 57:41Why don't we? Why don't we get that in the
- 57:42first? Thing So.
- 57:43People are going to hear it here.
- 57:44We're going to get this back on and you're going to see more of
- 57:47the three of us chopping it up. That's that's the guarantee.
- 57:50Boom, clip it. The best Adam's apple in the
- 57:52game. My goodness dude.
- 57:58That's a good thing, guys. Look at that chin.
- 58:02Chin me and you can me and you can do a show.
- 58:04A chin. Just count on it.
- 58:06All right, Ryan. Jawline of superheroes.
- 58:10Thanks, Nate. Much love Ryan?
- 58:12You bet dude. See ya.
- 58:13Talk soon. Is Ryan leaving the show?
- 58:23Oh, he's. Still, oh, I didn't know he's.
- 58:26Still gonna finish. You guys, bye.
- 58:28Love you, Ryan. See you, man.
- 58:33Oh, that's so good. Man, what a what a finish.
- 58:35So good you legitimately are gonna be the reason we never get
- 58:39Ryan. Back on this show again, you
- 58:40know I don't have a filter. I mean the conception thing was
- 58:45I I mean that's a great, it's a great question.
- 58:48Great. Point.
- 58:48You know what I mean? Juan, I would have probably
- 58:50asked in private October. 26th of 1992, that is.
- 58:56That is, after the postseason. OK.
- 58:59So that's maybe one I would have asked privately or just, you
- 59:02know, talked about privately. It's just a simple math
- 59:04question, but. Not only did you do that, then
- 59:06you went on to talk about his Adam's apple.
- 59:09He's never. I think it's a compliment.
- 59:11He's never going to want to come on the show again.
- 59:12I think it's a compliment. Much love to Ryan.
- 59:17Love having Ryan on here. I think he was like he he was
- 59:24like, visibly upset that we had to talk about the streak.
- 59:30Yeah, I don't think he's down. I think he just spent his whole
- 59:32life talking about it and everybody asks him about it, so
- 59:36I could see why. So maybe he doesn't come back
- 59:40because of you. He's definitely not coming back
- 59:43with you that. Let's don't don't try to flip
- 59:45this on me. I don't know.
- 59:48No. I'm again, I'm not gonna like
- 59:50talk about that on another episode.
- 59:52You know it's. It's understandable, yeah.
- 59:56It's Let's just say the work ethic of the father has
- 59:58definitely been passed down to the son, 'cause that guy never
- 1:00:01takes a day off and he never has time for anything.
- 1:00:05That's why he has 1100 unread text messages.
- 1:00:08Yeah, he texted. He texted the group chat while
- 1:00:11we were recording and said, hey, I got AI got like 5 minutes I
- 1:00:14need to go so man stays busy. Anyway, just finishing up this
- 1:00:19streak talk. Where was I?
- 1:00:25Where did I leave off here? He played in 8002.
- 1:00:30See the the the interesting thing about this streak is that
- 1:00:35I think the people that don't really look into it, they just
- 1:00:41hear the number of games he played and assumed he played
- 1:00:44every inning of every game. It's not how that works.
- 1:00:48The game is official after what 5?
- 1:00:55Is that what it is? Has it changed?
- 1:00:57I feel like as far as an appearance in being listed as a
- 1:01:01game has changed. Because the game, because I
- 1:01:06remember the night he broke the streak, it was official in the
- 1:01:10middle of the fifth, in the 5th. I think the game becomes
- 1:01:13official, as in like if weather happens and the game needs to
- 1:01:18end that we can officially call it.
- 1:01:21But an appearance in being listed in Baseball Reference as
- 1:01:24a game, I think is just making an appearance either in the
- 1:01:29field or at the plate. Because when you talk about guys
- 1:01:33that are like defensive substitutions, you're still
- 1:01:36being listed as a game. If you going in the 9th as a you
- 1:01:40know the sub in at shortstop but don't hit, that still counts as
- 1:01:43a game. So any type of appearance on the
- 1:01:46field counts. Played in 8243 consecutive
- 1:01:55innings from June of 82 to 80, September of 87.
- 1:02:02That's a lot of baseball. I mean, forget the streak.
- 1:02:05That just Indians wise. That many in and of itself,
- 1:02:088243. Divided by 162?
- 1:02:22No, that doesn't make any sense. Divided by 9, right?
- 1:02:29Divide that by 162, so that's almost.
- 1:02:34Six straight years, Yeah. 828384858687 Yeah.
- 1:02:39Almost six straight years of playing every inning.
- 1:02:45I think what's cool and I think my favorite part of this, and
- 1:02:49not to get like too sentimental or anything, but like, I think
- 1:02:52like growing up your dad was like, like, it's just cool to be
- 1:02:58like blue collar. He's in a blue collar city.
- 1:03:02Guys that just they show up, they go to work every day.
- 1:03:04And that's I think what was so cool about like the whole streak
- 1:03:08and growing up around the streak and like your dad coaching our
- 1:03:11team for so many years, like and your dad showed up to work every
- 1:03:15day, you know what I mean? It's just like it's a cool
- 1:03:17inspiration for that side of it and like take the baseball out
- 1:03:21of it, take the competitive, take the money out of it.
- 1:03:25It's like just showing up and doing anything every day,
- 1:03:28consistently, because that's your word.
- 1:03:32That, to me, is more impressive than anything.
- 1:03:36I agree. Yeah, I mean this, this streak I
- 1:03:41would say, and and Cal is a player, I think.
- 1:03:45I won't speak for you, but for me at least, was one of the one
- 1:03:49of the reasons on a very short list of why I fell in love with
- 1:03:52baseball, why I tried to model the way I approach the game as a
- 1:03:59kid. And and and into high school
- 1:04:01into College of just showing up and like it's certainly in high
- 1:04:07school college it's not a job but at at points it can feel
- 1:04:10like it but it's it's certainly no it's certainly no
- 1:04:13professional baseball I'll say that.
- 1:04:16But at the you can still approach it in the in a similar
- 1:04:18fashion like you can just say like this is what I've signed up
- 1:04:22to do. This is what I'm what I'm here
- 1:04:24to do, and I'm going to do it without, without making excuses
- 1:04:28as to why I can't do this or that.
- 1:04:30You just show up and do it. A grind is a grind is a grind.
- 1:04:33And whatever perspective you have on it, whatever your grind
- 1:04:36is in in your life, it's like to show up every day.
- 1:04:40It's it's tough, man. Like, that's insane.
- 1:04:43And I don't want to hear of like, though he's a professional
- 1:04:46athlete, like the amount of hotel trips and and buses and
- 1:04:50planes and it's like traveling sucks.
- 1:04:54So how often do we go on vacation?
- 1:04:56And we're like, yeah, I'm going to take Monday off, 'cause I
- 1:04:59don't want to go back to work right away, so like.
- 1:05:01There's people that sit at computers for 8 hours a day like
- 1:05:04crying about the fact that they don't have a three day weekend
- 1:05:07or something like. Exactly.
- 1:05:09Yeah, he's making money. But are are you doing really any
- 1:05:14professional athlete? Are you doing what they're
- 1:05:15doing? Are you capable of doing what
- 1:05:17they're doing? No.
- 1:05:18So let's just let's quiet that noise down going back to this
- 1:05:21inning streak though, this inning streak thing, did you
- 1:05:26learn something everyday? Did you know who replaced him to
- 1:05:30to kind of put a cap on that inning streak in in the middle
- 1:05:34of the streak? Was it not Ryan Minor?
- 1:05:38That No. No, no.
- 1:05:40That was who replaced him. Like once the game streak was
- 1:05:43over. But I'm talking about like the
- 1:05:44Indian streak. 8263 year stretch, No.
- 1:05:48Do you know who replaced him? Who?
- 1:05:51Ron Washington. Really.
- 1:05:54Yeah. Dude, baseball's awesome.
- 1:05:56What the heck I mean? How crazy is that?
- 1:05:58Baseball's awesome. I had no idea.
- 1:06:00I mean, I I knew the I knew the the Brian Miner thing.
- 1:06:04But Ron Washington? How about that?
- 1:06:10I got a another little nugget here.
- 1:06:12Only one Hall of Famer played his entire career within the
- 1:06:15confines of the streak. That would be Kirby Puckett, who
- 1:06:18debuted in 84 and retired after the 95 season.
- 1:06:27That's crazy. There's so many I, I there's.
- 1:06:30So many streaks like this. With streaks like this, I love
- 1:06:33that you you see all the time. Like what was the price of milk
- 1:06:37on? Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:06:38Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:06:40And then like 20 year or however many years later it could being
- 1:06:43completely different like this. Superstar was this age or this
- 1:06:48was the president or like, yeah. And look, we can talk all we
- 1:06:53want about how steroids saved baseball.
- 1:06:57If you don't want to, if you don't want to fall in line or or
- 1:07:02or be a part of the camp that says that steroids saved
- 1:07:05baseball, you can very easily look to this as something that
- 1:07:11you know kept kept baseball afloat because people were
- 1:07:15tuning in. And you hear especially Orioles
- 1:07:19fans talk about how no matter how rough their day was, you
- 1:07:22know, blue collar workers, white collar, were alike.
- 1:07:26They're they're signing off at the end of a long work day and
- 1:07:30they're tuning in to watch the Orioles.
- 1:07:31They're tuning in to watch Cal do his thing and to see if he
- 1:07:36could do the unthinkable. And it was break Lou Gehrig
- 1:07:39streak and he went on to do that and not only kept baseball
- 1:07:43afloat, but I think inspired, inspired an approach that still
- 1:07:52I think is it's lacking. But I think without Cal, the
- 1:07:57game of baseball looks very different.
- 1:07:59Yeah. Because he showed that it could
- 1:08:02be done and that. 100%. You know you can.
- 1:08:05You can work through injuries. You you don't have to look very
- 1:08:07far. You don't have to look past Cal
- 1:08:09Ripken to say it can be done. Like guys can play through
- 1:08:12injuries and not only do that, but they can.
- 1:08:14They can succeed at it. Like, sure, he had.
- 1:08:16He had to take his bumps and bruises, but.
- 1:08:19Difference between hurt and injured and all those types of
- 1:08:22things, Yeah, and it's. Redefining all sorts of things.
- 1:08:25100% and it's just speaks to like everything that like a lot
- 1:08:28of sports are having issues with.
- 1:08:29It's particularly the the NBA. You know, teams are, you know,
- 1:08:34fans are spending money to go to tickets and and get tickets and
- 1:08:37watch these games and like to not see the superstar that you
- 1:08:40were wearing the jersey and you're going to the game 2C not
- 1:08:44playing. That was not an issue.
- 1:08:48So yeah, it's it's, I think the most impressive.
- 1:08:56It's my 1A, but that's my bias. Yeah, I know the last few
- 1:09:04unbreakable records we've looked into, we kind of close it being
- 1:09:07like, is this the most unbreakable?
- 1:09:09And I know I say that every time, like, yeah, is this the
- 1:09:11most unbreakable record? But I think it.
- 1:09:14Goes beyond numbers, It goes beyond performance.
- 1:09:17Yeah, like it's just, it's like willpower at that point.
- 1:09:21Just being able to get up that many days in a row, that many
- 1:09:25years in a row, and doing the same thing even after you've
- 1:09:30you've been beaten up the night before with with bruises and
- 1:09:34cuts and scrapes and tweaks and pulls it.
- 1:09:38It's just like I said that approach it it's lacking, but I
- 1:09:44think with the way that the world is shifting, I don't
- 1:09:47think. Yeah.
- 1:09:49You're you're I mean like you said with NBA we're seeing load
- 1:09:53management we're seeing guys and not necessarily going above and
- 1:09:57beyond what what they feel they're worth is and you see
- 1:10:01that just in the American workplace like not to get all
- 1:10:04like whatever but I I I just I don't see this ever happening
- 1:10:08again. That is certainly a dying breed
- 1:10:10and I I think Cal was the last guy that's ever going to do to
- 1:10:16put up that kind of number. So to your what?
- 1:10:19As you were saying, I think that's got to be one AI think
- 1:10:22it's got to be everybody's 1A with his.
- 1:10:24As insane as Ricky's numbers are and Nolan's records are,
- 1:10:29nobody's touching this. Agreed.
- 1:10:31Nobody's touching it. Agreed.
- 1:10:37That'll do it. Appreciate Ryan hopping on with
- 1:10:41us. I think we got through
- 1:10:45everything. I know you got to go.
- 1:10:46I feel like I kept you way too long.
- 1:10:48So we'll. Get out of here.
