- 0:07Speaker 1: Edple's walking into the Irish Theaters podcast as we are
- 0:10Speaker 1: sitting here just under two weeks away from the NFL season,
- 0:15Speaker 1: delighted to be joined Michael Quid level, he'll be joined
- 0:18Speaker 1: with the crew that I think it's called Michael lo Quid,
- 0:21Speaker 1: Jimmy English, Dave McKee. We'll talk about the week. Get Luisacas, Jimmy,
- 0:27Speaker 1: he's doing good. I'm presuming you're very happy with the sitters.
- 0:29Speaker 2: Absolutely, yeah, I mean pre and O in the preseason,
- 0:35Speaker 2: you can't reask for much better than that. And I
- 0:37Speaker 2: mean I was talking to my good my good friend
- 0:40Speaker 2: Stephen Stephen Kurrns there over the weekend and I was
- 0:44Speaker 2: getting excited of getting.
- 0:45Speaker 3: A little bit hyped up about how theaters are looking.
- 0:48Speaker 2: He told me to to reel it in because it
- 0:50Speaker 2: is only the preseason and there is a lot of
- 0:53Speaker 2: actual real football ahead of us. But I can't help
- 0:56Speaker 2: to be I mean, I'm always I'm always an optimist,
- 0:58Speaker 2: but I can't have to be a little bit more
- 1:00Speaker 2: than optimistic. We've always seen so far, so I really
- 1:03Speaker 2: opened that and carrying the regular season and actually making
- 1:07Speaker 2: the playoffs this year.
- 1:10Speaker 1: Absolutely, And the big big shure that Steven had the
- 1:12Speaker 1: pleasure of meeting Stephen at the weekend. Great guy and
- 1:15Speaker 1: we're probably gonna get him in some more fans on
- 1:16Speaker 1: the podcast over the next few weeks, especially before the
- 1:19Speaker 1: season starts with certainly we really appreciate listening to the podcast.
- 1:24Speaker 1: Please do interrect at Staeters Ireland hashtag Steters Ireland. Dave
- 1:28Speaker 1: good to see him. My friend called started.
- 1:30Speaker 4: Yeah, Tommy, get the Queen funer. I'll have to say, Michael,
- 1:36Speaker 4: I'd just like to start off the podcast just by saying,
- 1:39Speaker 4: you're twenty twenty three pre season MVP, mister Kenneth Shean Pickett.
- 1:44Speaker 4: My board production of Kenny winning the MVP. It's looking
- 1:47Speaker 4: very very good right now. Undefeated preseason finished with a
- 1:51Speaker 4: hass QB rating over all the QBS in pre season.
- 1:54Speaker 4: I'm just glaud we can put up behind us and
- 1:56Speaker 4: hope they have a bit they have a bit of swagger.
- 1:58Speaker 2: I mean, you know, there's there's something different day about this,
- 2:03Speaker 2: this Theaters offense and the Staters team. I can thee
- 2:05Speaker 2: this it's gonna be. It's gonna be a big year.
- 2:08Speaker 2: It's like none other. Jimmy, I couldn't agree more.
- 2:12Speaker 1: I think I think not to talk about different podcasts,
- 2:14Speaker 1: but certainly anybody I've spoke to outside of this sphere
- 2:18Speaker 1: with different teams in the AFC norph are definitely worried.
- 2:22Speaker 1: And we'll come back to that in the week minute.
- 2:23Speaker 1: And it would be a mister of this not to
- 2:25Speaker 1: talk about Ireland over the last weekend. And I guess
- 2:29Speaker 1: just first off, for people who be listening to this,
- 2:30Speaker 1: I know we've got people that listen to the podcast,
- 2:33Speaker 1: not just nar them and folks, we thank you for
- 2:35Speaker 1: doing so. We had a college game in Ireland on
- 2:38Speaker 1: Starded when the jymneyy but more so Jimmy and we
- 2:40Speaker 1: were both at this. On the Friday, there was a
- 2:43Speaker 1: high school game between numerous different teams sorry Free scot
- 2:47Speaker 1: three high school games. The Irish Wolfans youth part of
- 2:50Speaker 1: the team that the Staters very highly donated some merchandise
- 2:53Speaker 1: and some geared to last week. But more so, first off,
- 2:57Speaker 1: you were commented on us, so a big congratulations to you.
- 3:00Speaker 1: And secondly, it was great to see Don Reni junior
- 3:02Speaker 1: come over to Ireland and just to hear such positivity
- 3:04Speaker 1: from him on the just on the market and Jimmy,
- 3:06Speaker 1: I mean, I think it if I think it shows
- 3:09Speaker 1: the sheer effort that this team is going to to
- 3:14Speaker 1: really make fans feel connected on this island. I mean
- 3:17Speaker 1: the fact that he's flying over and just sort of
- 3:20Speaker 1: coming to the high school game and just experience, and
- 3:21Speaker 1: I think I think it says an awful lot of
- 3:23Speaker 1: Don as a person, but more so just in the
- 3:25Speaker 1: just in the direction to this team's going. It was
- 3:27Speaker 1: a great It was a great weekendst crack Jimmy and
- 3:29Speaker 1: and look the NFL heads and it could just imagine
- 3:32Speaker 1: what that would be like someday for a game. But
- 3:34Speaker 1: we'll just well could our jets here. But they look
- 3:37Speaker 1: great weekend.
- 3:38Speaker 3: Yeah, absolutely, Michael.
- 3:39Speaker 2: And I'm glad that my voice has recovered sufficiently in
- 3:42Speaker 2: this podcast because.
- 3:44Speaker 3: It wasn't looking great there yesterday. I've just about to
- 3:47Speaker 3: become you again. A fantastic weekend.
- 3:49Speaker 2: They look to be part of that event in donny
- 3:51Speaker 2: Brook Stadium or Energy of Park as it is now,
- 3:54Speaker 2: and like you said, he'd be commentating and to be
- 3:56Speaker 2: involved with was fantastic. So but solutely to see, you know,
- 4:01Speaker 2: the engagement from the Steelers and seeing how you know,
- 4:04Speaker 2: genuinely interested Dan really was in what was going on.
- 4:08Speaker 2: And being part of it, and coming down and in
- 4:10Speaker 2: the coin toss with the third game, and then being
- 4:12Speaker 2: involved with the kiding competition in the halftime that I
- 4:17Speaker 2: think that kind of personal touch from the Rooney family
- 4:19Speaker 2: and from the Steelers organization show that this isn't just the.
- 4:23Speaker 3: Kind of apply by night thing.
- 4:24Speaker 2: There's genuine interesting investment going on here, and you know,
- 4:29Speaker 2: they really are building something special for the fans the
- 4:32Speaker 2: Steelers stands and are not only Steeters Stands, but NFL
- 4:35Speaker 2: fans in general. So I might abolt, you could probably
- 4:38Speaker 2: hear the cinema voice.
- 4:39Speaker 3: A little bit. I think it would be a few
- 4:41Speaker 3: more days.
- 4:42Speaker 2: Before I recovered fully, But like the whole weekend was
- 4:45Speaker 2: was absolutely fantastic and or it really the show how
- 4:49Speaker 2: much of a genuine fan based for America and football
- 4:52Speaker 2: there is in Ireland, and it's certainly something that I'm
- 4:55Speaker 2: excited to be part of growing over the next couple
- 4:57Speaker 2: of years.
- 4:58Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 4:58Speaker 1: Absolutely, I'll just quickly adds that and say, and obviously
- 5:02Speaker 1: great to see you guys on on on the Saturday
- 5:05Speaker 1: prior to the game, but more so seeing so many
- 5:08Speaker 1: Staters fans, which is already awesome, especially when there's there
- 5:11Speaker 1: were so many college fans there, which was great, but
- 5:13Speaker 1: seeing a lot of black and yallow, a lot of
- 5:15Speaker 1: a lot of Staters jerseys, a lot of Staters hats
- 5:18Speaker 1: which was great and obviously people wondering we're talking about
- 5:20Speaker 1: a game of Staters. I have said themselves on a
- 5:23Speaker 1: website staters dot com slash Ireland that they are only
- 5:25Speaker 1: at the beginning of their journey and much more research
- 5:28Speaker 1: and planning needs to be done in this area. But
- 5:30Speaker 1: as part of their long term planning, we aspire to
- 5:32Speaker 1: return to the island. Do you for people on this
- 5:35Speaker 1: podcast listening to this podcast, obviously you're true month by
- 5:38Speaker 1: the grace of God, but you live in the UK,
- 5:41Speaker 1: you actually live in Liverpool. So what did you think
- 5:45Speaker 1: of the weekend? Just looking at it from afar? I
- 5:46Speaker 1: bet you wish you were over here, and I'm sure
- 5:48Speaker 1: if there's a band party at some point you'll definitely
- 5:50Speaker 1: fly over at some point.
- 5:52Speaker 4: Yeah, it's it's been just a complete fit of raising
- 5:56Speaker 4: jaalousy for the whole weekend. If you like, you know,
- 5:59Speaker 4: just just on a word on the previews, you know,
- 6:02Speaker 4: just sort of outstale me on this. You know this
- 6:05Speaker 4: obviously with Notre Dame Jimmy's a massive fun and stuff.
- 6:08Speaker 4: And obviously you're South Michael, you know, you follow the
- 6:11Speaker 4: sport up and down the country. It's something I'm just
- 6:13Speaker 4: sort of trying to get into the rhythm of them.
- 6:15Speaker 4: But obviously living over here, it's a bit of a
- 6:17Speaker 4: of a of a of a conundrum if you like.
- 6:20Speaker 4: What's definitely the watch parties one hundred percent on, but
- 6:23Speaker 4: even imagined that when when I seen the photos and
- 6:25Speaker 4: the videos and stuff I mentioned about how you know
- 6:28Speaker 4: that game Monaster it sows some rugby games in the Aviva.
- 6:31Speaker 4: It's just as a massive showing of the actual growth
- 6:33Speaker 4: of the sport on the island. And it's as you
- 6:35Speaker 4: imagine about the Steelers fund. I've seen plenty of yellow
- 6:38Speaker 4: and like during the coverage of the game Black and Yellow.
- 6:41Speaker 4: So it's it's a complete another you know, it's it's
- 6:45Speaker 4: a raise like we've seen no like none over if
- 6:47Speaker 4: you like, and as long as they continue, because it's
- 6:51Speaker 4: it's one of those things where I imagine it in
- 6:53Speaker 4: the group shot the other day, I was like, I
- 6:54Speaker 4: am one hundred percent and next time because I was
- 6:56Speaker 4: looking at videos and stuff, you know that the Bard
- 6:58Speaker 4: playing wild Rover and it just believe it. I was like,
- 7:01Speaker 4: it just seems like a festival that wasn't actually a
- 7:03Speaker 4: word with it a game or as a music festival.
- 7:05Speaker 5: What was going on.
- 7:06Speaker 1: Well, it was great to see obviously Dallas. You said
- 7:08Speaker 1: that at the high school games. Just just a great
- 7:10Speaker 1: effort and it shows you, as Jimmy said, and as
- 7:13Speaker 1: you said there, they've just just to grow up it
- 7:14Speaker 1: here and look the Steelers are at the forefront of
- 7:17Speaker 1: it in Ireland and that's the main thing. So definitely
- 7:21Speaker 1: delighted with that, and it was funnily I was just
- 7:25Speaker 1: talking on that. But we we get through a preseason
- 7:28Speaker 1: and one of the things, guys that a lot of
- 7:29Speaker 1: people talk to me just when I was I was
- 7:31Speaker 1: in Dublin Thursdays, Friday, Saturday on and often a lot
- 7:35Speaker 1: of people that a couple of like we we listened
- 7:38Speaker 1: to the podcast, but more so Jimmy. They were mentioned
- 7:40Speaker 1: in Diego and how handy it was to watch the games.
- 7:43Speaker 1: And I was shotting with a couple of guys that
- 7:44Speaker 1: were first time fans of the NFL and they really
- 7:47Speaker 1: enjoyed the coverage and I have certainly enjoyed it. It's
- 7:49Speaker 1: been great to have it on so easily. I'll tell
- 7:52Speaker 1: you what, Jimmy, that was one hell of a way
- 7:54Speaker 1: to end preseason. I mean, you can't you cannot ask
- 7:57Speaker 1: for much more than that. You could win to Atlanta
- 8:01Speaker 1: and you go and you shut out the Falgans all
- 8:03Speaker 1: be in the preseason game, but they impressed. The team
- 8:05Speaker 1: impresses again. Kenny im praises for what he does on
- 8:08Speaker 1: the Finn short and not McFarlane impressed again. Good to
- 8:11Speaker 1: see Nazi Harris could have won your hard touchdown. But
- 8:14Speaker 1: I think going back on the second game to this game,
- 8:16Speaker 1: the first series was excellent on again, it was like
- 8:19Speaker 1: this is just let's just keep this comment. Can the
- 8:21Speaker 1: Niners game just start right now?
- 8:23Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 8:24Speaker 2: Absolutely, And like you know, of course, let's uh, I'm
- 8:29Speaker 2: notorious for getting out of myself, Michael, but let's just
- 8:31Speaker 2: bring it back in a little bit and saying that
- 8:34Speaker 2: it was again for two is in decrees, which having
- 8:37Speaker 2: said that, I mean, it was fantastic to see Nage
- 8:39Speaker 2: get it smurst touch under the preseason. I was getting
- 8:42Speaker 2: a little bit worried that he wasn't getting you know, twushes,
- 8:45Speaker 2: that he wasn't making it up for an impact and
- 8:48Speaker 2: I may or may not have been caught on for
- 8:50Speaker 2: Gena Warren to be to start running back, so I immediately
- 8:52Speaker 2: retract that statement. And so great to see Nage get
- 8:56Speaker 2: a score also, you know three second speaking of Jail
- 8:59Speaker 2: and Warren, great to see that he had a fantastic
- 9:01Speaker 2: run a second, a big second effort stretch for the touchdown,
- 9:05Speaker 2: and everything just clicked. An offense, it was coming, you know.
- 9:11Speaker 2: On defense as well, Nick Krbig stood out again to me,
- 9:14Speaker 2: there's a couple of performances that were great and there
- 9:18Speaker 2: was a clumble recovery on defense, so everything everything went well.
- 9:22Speaker 2: I mean, you know, I haven't said all that. I
- 9:23Speaker 2: am glad the preseason is over and we can start
- 9:25Speaker 2: getting excited and excited about the regular season opener in
- 9:30Speaker 2: a couple of weeks.
- 9:30Speaker 3: Time.
- 9:31Speaker 1: Really looking forward to that. And I'm just just looking
- 9:32Speaker 1: forward to seeing the Niners game because you know, we'll
- 9:36Speaker 1: talk about it towards the end of the podcast, but
- 9:38Speaker 1: there is so much expectation just after this perfect preseason.
- 9:42Speaker 1: It's just it's great to see. It's a great time
- 9:44Speaker 1: to start to start this podcast. Well it's night Undefeated done,
- 9:48Speaker 1: so we'll take it. There is there any him that
- 9:51Speaker 1: you might have picked up on just from watching the preseason.
- 9:53Speaker 1: I know you've been an admirer, to say the least,
- 9:56Speaker 1: of the Kerbig and I think that you enjoyed in
- 9:59Speaker 1: the final preseason game.
- 10:00Speaker 4: In the actual preseason game, of course. Like if, like Michael,
- 10:04Speaker 4: if you think I'm gonna start overreacting after an undefeated
- 10:07Speaker 4: three and no preseason finished on top of the pile
- 10:10Speaker 4: and start saying we can win the Super Bowl, You're
- 10:12Speaker 4: absolutely right. Ten out of ten. Shoutout performance on Thursday Nights. Albeit,
- 10:18Speaker 4: as Jimmy said, it was against the second string Falcons,
- 10:21Speaker 4: but we looked every bit of team that can be
- 10:24Speaker 4: dangerous with a great display, you know, like how to
- 10:26Speaker 4: finish off. It's just been an amazing camp, an amazing preseason.
- 10:29Speaker 4: I would genuinely give it ten out of ten. And
- 10:32Speaker 4: you know, if you look at the preseason as a whole,
- 10:34Speaker 4: you know, well, we'll look back at some of the
- 10:36Speaker 4: best performances. You know, with one player we actually haven't mentioned,
- 10:39Speaker 4: and I'm sure Jimmy would agree with this about Isaac cmali.
- 10:42Speaker 4: You know, this is a guy who's a major part
- 10:44Speaker 4: of potency, the best over line and in the in
- 10:46Speaker 4: the League last year with the Philadelphia Eagles, and he's
- 10:49Speaker 4: a really good preseason. He's called prove absolutely massive throughout
- 10:52Speaker 4: the year at the g yard position. You know, we've
- 10:54Speaker 4: got a Landon Roberts had a standup performance a thirty
- 10:57Speaker 4: Night as well. It chipped in with a sack. You know,
- 11:00Speaker 4: our middle linebacker crew, it used to be the weak
- 11:02Speaker 4: point in our defense, is probably one of the strongest
- 11:04Speaker 4: now and we've got great adapt all of a sudden
- 11:07Speaker 4: with cold homecome and stuff. So as well as that,
- 11:11Speaker 4: you know, performances Jaylee and Warren, Jimmy Manchin. Another touchdown
- 11:14Speaker 4: to add is Rasume Darnall Washington with Jalvinawson, the third
- 11:17Speaker 4: of four has just had an amazing preseason as well.
- 11:20Speaker 4: So it's it's been honestly at ten out of ten preseason.
- 11:23Speaker 4: No major energies apart from you know, Corey Trace, but
- 11:26Speaker 4: as I said, I couldn't all you can really use
- 11:28Speaker 4: echo everything Jimmy said. You know, it's been a proper
- 11:30Speaker 4: good preseason and you know, can't wait for the Niners
- 11:34Speaker 4: and in a couple of weeks time.
- 11:36Speaker 1: Absolutely absolutely we are going to talk to again as
- 11:40Speaker 1: this week before we talk about the preseason overall, like
- 11:44Speaker 1: maybe a highlight each and we'll also maybe have a brief,
- 11:48Speaker 1: very brief look forward to that Niers game for a
- 11:50Speaker 1: couple of seconds. We are going to do that in
- 11:52Speaker 1: a lot more detail next week. It's too early to
- 11:54Speaker 1: bring Wolfy Black home boys that idoltys are all dying
- 11:56Speaker 1: for it. That might be my preseason highlight. However, look
- 12:01Speaker 1: I tell you what boys like we We we had
- 12:04Speaker 1: partly Cliphnolophy because and obviously Party is a massive, massive
- 12:07Speaker 1: Staters fan. There was one guy with potty and also
- 12:10Speaker 1: had a turtle as well on the field that They
- 12:12Speaker 1: include Park, who has been used to cook Park a
- 12:16Speaker 1: few times. As a true man. It pains me to
- 12:19Speaker 1: set in a joking way, but Mossy Quinn in all
- 12:22Speaker 1: seriousness one of the best forwards to play getting football
- 12:26Speaker 1: in the generation. He has an Allarland title, seven of
- 12:28Speaker 1: Lemster titles and well looked upon around the league. Currently
- 12:33Speaker 1: working with Dublin GEA delighted to welcome Mossy Quinn to
- 12:37Speaker 1: the Irish Staters podcast. We're Loaded this week on the
- 12:45Speaker 1: Irish series podcast The Welcome come in a guy that
- 12:49Speaker 1: a lot of people know in Ireland, he's won multiple
- 12:52Speaker 1: Elefser titles, won a lot of them with Dublin, currently
- 12:55Speaker 1: working with Dublin GEA and you may have seen him
- 12:57Speaker 1: in Croke Park a few months ago for that incredible
- 13:00Speaker 1: day that we all witness as NFL fans on the side.
- 13:03Speaker 1: Delighted fo good Mossy Quinn, most warm, Welcome to the podcast.
- 13:08Speaker 1: How are you doing.
- 13:09Speaker 5: I'm doing good, guys, Thanks very much for having me
- 13:11Speaker 5: excited to be here.
- 13:12Speaker 1: Most obviously appreciate you how like we we massive appreciate
- 13:14Speaker 1: you calling on the podcast. And you know it's it's
- 13:17Speaker 1: funny MOSTI because working on podcasts in in Ireland over
- 13:21Speaker 1: the last few years, the all GA player pops up
- 13:24Speaker 1: that enjoys like a wee bit of NFL. For example,
- 13:28Speaker 1: Dean Rocks and mass Patriots fan a partly was shotting
- 13:30Speaker 1: a few years ago, and and different guys enjoyed different teams.
- 13:34Speaker 1: And I guess for you, you were playing football for
- 13:38Speaker 1: Dublin at a time where the league was really growing
- 13:42Speaker 1: here and in Europe. How do you you know, how
- 13:46Speaker 1: do you become an NFL fan? Talk to us about
- 13:48Speaker 1: your journey. But then also you've become really really involved
- 13:53Speaker 1: with with the sport and Ireland throughout the last few years.
- 13:56Speaker 5: Yeah, I primary age myself a little bit here and
- 13:59Speaker 5: in terms of my journey, but I would have been
- 14:01Speaker 5: I was in the kind of late nineties, just at
- 14:05Speaker 5: the turn of the two thousands, I was on a
- 14:07Speaker 5: family holiday in America, and at that time I would
- 14:11Speaker 5: have been any but any sport. I would have had
- 14:13Speaker 5: an interest in a bit of a sports note and
- 14:16Speaker 5: sports books in particular, so getting to the States, getting
- 14:19Speaker 5: to a Barnes and Noble, going to a section and
- 14:21Speaker 5: obviously you think back to then, the internet was only
- 14:24Speaker 5: starting out. We didn't have podcasts, we didn't have the
- 14:27Speaker 5: coverage we have today. So NFL books probably got me
- 14:30Speaker 5: into and I read a brilliant book on Bill Walsh,
- 14:33Speaker 5: the forty nine ers coach. I read a book on
- 14:35Speaker 5: Chuck Noll from Steemers, So that was the start. But
- 14:38Speaker 5: Sports Illustrated Magazine again on people used to get magazines
- 14:42Speaker 5: on on a regular basis. I actually started subscribing. I
- 14:45Speaker 5: was probably one of the few international subscribers to Sports
- 14:47Speaker 5: Illustrated and the additions had come in through and four
- 14:50Speaker 5: weeks late by the time they got to hear. But
- 14:52Speaker 5: that was how I consume sports at that stage, and
- 14:55Speaker 5: that was around the time Sky Sports are starting to
- 14:57Speaker 5: show NFL. So my first season watching it properly was
- 15:01Speaker 5: probably when the Patriots upset the Rams with Rinny Terry
- 15:05Speaker 5: kicking the field goal the last play of the game,
- 15:07Speaker 5: So that was probably my first. That's the That was
- 15:09Speaker 5: January two, Elmen two. So I then spent the summer
- 15:14Speaker 5: with in New York. It was my first summer with
- 15:17Speaker 5: Dublin actually into Thousland three, and unfortunately we were beating early,
- 15:20Speaker 5: but it did. The flip side was I got to
- 15:22Speaker 5: go and spend the rest of the summer in New York,
- 15:24Speaker 5: and again I started watching and listening again with ESPN
- 15:29Speaker 5: over there, and just I just started getting into it,
- 15:30Speaker 5: and just I love the aspect of it. I love
- 15:33Speaker 5: the tactical aspect I loved, I loved all the elements
- 15:36Speaker 5: of it them It's kind of grown from then. So
- 15:38Speaker 5: even then, the Internet, obviously Monday and Monday Morning Quarterback
- 15:41Speaker 5: Peter King's article every Monday on Sports illustrated things like
- 15:44Speaker 5: that was what really got me into it and kind
- 15:46Speaker 5: of I then just as it grew in terms of
- 15:48Speaker 5: the coverage and everything else that came with US, and
- 15:51Speaker 5: that's that's where my love would have started for and
- 15:54Speaker 5: watching different players. I always enjoyed watching like again, the
- 15:57Speaker 5: standout ones were probably at the time Peyton Manning, Tom Bray,
- 16:00Speaker 5: Brett Farver was coming in. I used to love watching
- 16:02Speaker 5: Steve McNair, even Cordell Stewart, guys like that, those kind
- 16:06Speaker 5: of if you had that X factor about them. So
- 16:08Speaker 5: that was my start on the NFL. And it's only brown.
- 16:11Speaker 5: I'm try and get to as many games as I could.
- 16:14Speaker 5: Maybe it was in a habit there before real life,
- 16:16Speaker 5: gotten away with wife and kids and life outside, and
- 16:20Speaker 5: I used to try and get to the States every
- 16:22Speaker 5: year to a game and anything that came to London
- 16:24Speaker 5: or anything like that. So I suppose that would have
- 16:26Speaker 5: been it from the start.
- 16:28Speaker 2: I'm pretty aged myself a little bit here mostly, and
- 16:31Speaker 2: said I used to have a stacker of sports illustrated
- 16:33Speaker 2: magazines about back plick, so I can definitely relate to,
- 16:38Speaker 2: you know, the whole aspect of getting in at the
- 16:39Speaker 2: sports from the American side of things, with the box
- 16:43Speaker 2: and the magazines. So but tell me, have you been
- 16:46Speaker 2: to any you know, NFL games on decided the Atlantic,
- 16:50Speaker 2: you know, London, even Germany now with the expansion of
- 16:54Speaker 2: NFL Europe or have it just kind of been a
- 16:56Speaker 2: state side.
- 16:57Speaker 5: Yeah, No, I was fortunate enough back I think it
- 17:00Speaker 5: was around twenty eleven. I would have gone. Twenty ten,
- 17:04Speaker 5: twenty eleven. I would have got to see the Broncos
- 17:07Speaker 5: play because it was around the time t Bow was
- 17:09Speaker 5: kind of a thing where they playing in London and
- 17:14Speaker 5: so McDonalds would have been their head coach at the time,
- 17:16Speaker 5: So I was at that game in Wembley. Would I
- 17:19Speaker 5: actually tried to get tickets to Munich last year and
- 17:23Speaker 5: wasn't fortunate enough to get any, but I have. I'm
- 17:25Speaker 5: actually going this October. I'm going over to tonam Otsker Stadium,
- 17:29Speaker 5: going to see the Ravens and the Titans. So there's
- 17:31Speaker 5: a gang. There's seven of us going at the moment.
- 17:34Speaker 5: My own friends, love my local friends. So yeah, really
- 17:36Speaker 5: looking forward to that and I've been to I suppose
- 17:38Speaker 5: the weekend with Thin. It'll been to a number of
- 17:40Speaker 5: the college football games that have been in Dublin over
- 17:43Speaker 5: the years. To win and Throw Park a couple of
- 17:44Speaker 5: years ago in Penn State and then obviously were easing BNBV.
- 17:47Speaker 5: So yeah, when I get a chance. Obviously it's not
- 17:50Speaker 5: as easy. It's easier when it's it's a bit more local.
- 17:52Speaker 5: I'd love to get to Germany, and I think we'd
- 17:54Speaker 5: all I think it's easy enough to say that we'd
- 17:56Speaker 5: love to see an NFL game in Dublin as well.
- 17:58Speaker 5: That'll be the dream as well. But yeah, anything anytime
- 18:01Speaker 5: there's anywhere low So I'd do my best to get
- 18:03Speaker 5: to a chat.
- 18:05Speaker 2: I know that this is a S Theeters podcast, but
- 18:06Speaker 2: I'm curious to know your college team is, And.
- 18:10Speaker 5: Be honest, I don't have one, Like I'd be lazy
- 18:12Speaker 5: and say the Fight and Irish just for a week
- 18:15Speaker 5: fan up.
- 18:15Speaker 2: No.
- 18:16Speaker 5: I actually again, around that time, we're talking about how
- 18:19Speaker 5: for a while I was big into it in terms
- 18:21Speaker 5: of Colin McCoy, Sam Bradford, Tea. There's a couple of
- 18:24Speaker 5: teams around that time when again you're watching the US Seed,
- 18:29Speaker 5: USC Notre Dame Rivalry, Matt Lionheart and Brady Quinn and
- 18:32Speaker 5: guys like that, so I probably want to there was
- 18:34Speaker 5: I kind of go through peaks and with that one
- 18:37Speaker 5: when it when it's kind of are you awaring? This
- 18:39Speaker 5: would have been increase on it. So I don't have
- 18:41Speaker 5: a set team that I'd follow it in college football.
- 18:45Speaker 1: Just before Steve jumps in here break quickly. You're talking
- 18:48Speaker 1: about one about Ravens game in London. We're actually hoping
- 18:51Speaker 1: to get a Ravens stole all this podcast whenever the
- 18:53Speaker 1: city is player. Evens Owen Murphy the coal Canny keeper
- 18:57Speaker 1: is a massive Regivings slant and I'm going to get
- 18:59Speaker 1: a cush up there. It seems to be a massive
- 19:01Speaker 1: g GA contingent enjoying the NFL day. But it's great
- 19:04Speaker 1: to your Mossy stories to the bar.
- 19:06Speaker 4: Yeah, it's it's obviously great stuff and you know him
- 19:10Speaker 4: a bit of a blowing when it comes to the
- 19:12Speaker 4: college game myself, you know MASSI So honestly, it's it's
- 19:15Speaker 4: just one of those things where we have all this
- 19:17Speaker 4: stuff for juggle on our plates. But you know you
- 19:19Speaker 4: imagined there, you attended, you know, you at headed the
- 19:22Speaker 4: day and a few months back in crow Park and
- 19:25Speaker 4: you've achieved so much a nastadium as you know you
- 19:27Speaker 4: want on Ireland and if you've won a plenty of
- 19:29Speaker 4: Leinstar titles. Ask Potty Clifford this question a few weeks back.
- 19:33Speaker 4: But for yourself, was it a bit of a pinch
- 19:34Speaker 4: me moment because it's just not something maybe you'll be
- 19:37Speaker 4: sitting in crow Park in September and thinking, I'll probably
- 19:40Speaker 4: never sit there under the Steelers umbrella if you like
- 19:44Speaker 4: it was.
- 19:44Speaker 5: And you know what, and as oppose, the easiest way
- 19:47Speaker 5: to prove it was like my shwe in my hand
- 19:49Speaker 5: all the time. And I wouldn't be one for taking
- 19:52Speaker 5: cell Caesar taking too many pictures, tragical and stuff like that.
- 19:55Speaker 5: I got being fortunate to be in crow Park and
- 19:57Speaker 5: number times playing and working. Then it's a place I'm
- 20:00Speaker 5: very familiar with. Well, that day it was fantastic. You
- 20:02Speaker 5: walk out, you see the big screen and the Steelers
- 20:05Speaker 5: all goo on it and the jerseys, and again I
- 20:08Speaker 5: shouldn't be surprised. It was just so it was just
- 20:10Speaker 5: so excellently run. It was so class every element of
- 20:13Speaker 5: the day, from the press conference to the photos to
- 20:16Speaker 5: the pitch being laid down as a macular as it was.
- 20:19Speaker 5: And yeah, it was brilliant.
- 20:21Speaker 3: It was.
- 20:21Speaker 5: It was really exciting to see, like I was kind
- 20:23Speaker 5: of left there. He left the stadium that day, and
- 20:25Speaker 5: that's why I'm really excited to see how it progresses
- 20:27Speaker 5: over the coming years. I think one of the things
- 20:29Speaker 5: the NFL have shown they can do is when they
- 20:31Speaker 5: bring it international, how well they can do. What you
- 20:33Speaker 5: could see that in Germany last year. You've seen what
- 20:35Speaker 5: they've done in London. You've seen how it's expanded within London.
- 20:38Speaker 5: You see what teams are doing internationally now. So for
- 20:41Speaker 5: the Steelers, for Ireland to have an association with with
- 20:43Speaker 5: an organization like the Steelers is absolutely fantastic and I'm
- 20:47Speaker 5: genuinely really excited to see where it goes.
- 20:49Speaker 1: Yeah, I think just the morning we walked in ourselves,
- 20:52Speaker 1: like you see that, it had hope. It was pretty cool.
- 20:54Speaker 1: I think we snuck it early and we did see
- 20:57Speaker 1: as that on the field as well, so it was
- 20:59Speaker 1: good to see us and just looked like it was
- 21:00Speaker 1: set up and it was. It's it's almost it feels
- 21:03Speaker 1: like destiny. But obviously time will hotel and I'm sure
- 21:05Speaker 1: there's a lot more work to be done there and
- 21:07Speaker 1: we'll talk about that and we might talk about that, weey,
- 21:09Speaker 1: But just look just a way bit and I guess
- 21:12Speaker 1: mostly you're part of the Dublin puddle, the one the other,
- 21:15Speaker 1: you know, right towards the end of your career and
- 21:18Speaker 1: I'm going to start, you know, begging you up here. Now,
- 21:21Speaker 1: I'm going to compare you to the John Always who
- 21:23Speaker 1: played for so long and couldn't get over the line,
- 21:25Speaker 1: and you questions were asked of him. And you always
- 21:30Speaker 1: see these players that play so well in the NFL,
- 21:32Speaker 1: but they never get to the peak of up performance
- 21:35Speaker 1: or the peak of their career. Really, I remember sitting
- 21:37Speaker 1: in Belfa, was watching that final whenever clubs to walk
- 21:40Speaker 1: up walked up, and I think a lot of true
- 21:41Speaker 1: room lads as well, a lot of people we were
- 21:43Speaker 1: looking for Dublin to win that game because it had
- 21:45Speaker 1: been so long, and I can only imagine the relief
- 21:47Speaker 1: that that you and and those lots had that just
- 21:50Speaker 1: that day, just to get over the line. I know,
- 21:53Speaker 1: just just just comparing not to that of an NFL
- 21:56Speaker 1: player dealing with pressure. You know, did you at the
- 21:59Speaker 1: time find that over barrel and how do you deal
- 22:02Speaker 1: with that? And do you see similarities in both sports
- 22:05Speaker 1: in that sense.
- 22:07Speaker 5: It's it's a tough thing obviously for us at the time.
- 22:10Speaker 5: Dublin hadn't even gotten to a final in sixteen years
- 22:13Speaker 5: at that stage, and I suppose famously some of the
- 22:16Speaker 5: teams I've been part of. We'd come through Leinster, we'd
- 22:19Speaker 5: have we'd have big wins early in the year, but
- 22:20Speaker 5: when it really came to the crunch in All Ireland quarterfinals,
- 22:24Speaker 5: semi finals, we came up short and we came up
- 22:26Speaker 5: against some brilliant teams. That tur Round team are as
- 22:28Speaker 5: good a team that's ever played the game, the Kerry
- 22:31Speaker 5: team at the time we probably left from behind us
- 22:33Speaker 5: against Mayo on Tody Wasland six. But it does build,
- 22:36Speaker 5: and it definitely kind of it's a narrative. And you're
- 22:39Speaker 5: seeing in all sports and high performance and high pressure
- 22:42Speaker 5: situations and you think of the Bills teams that last
- 22:44Speaker 5: four for in a row. There, you know, and it
- 22:48Speaker 5: is something as a group you have to try and
- 22:50Speaker 5: deal with and as much as you can, you try,
- 22:52Speaker 5: and you try and ark and and you hear every
- 22:55Speaker 5: sport talked about we'll worry about what we can control.
- 22:57Speaker 5: You can't control stuff outside the group, but picarly in
- 23:00Speaker 5: a city like Dublin where it's so big and at
- 23:02Speaker 5: the time, like you have to remember, I know Leinster
- 23:05Speaker 5: at the moment and you look at the GA and
- 23:06Speaker 5: it's gone through different structures. We played in two thousand
- 23:09Speaker 5: and five we played a Lensor Challenger quarterfinal against Wexford
- 23:12Speaker 5: and there was eighty two thousand people at that It
- 23:15Speaker 5: was a full house every single game we played. Now
- 23:17Speaker 5: at the moment it's generally an Alluran finals the only time,
- 23:20Speaker 5: so you think of the hype and every single game
- 23:24Speaker 5: we played there was we were We had to deal
- 23:25Speaker 5: with that and it was something that took us time
- 23:27Speaker 5: and I think other teams nearly took as much energy,
- 23:29Speaker 5: if not more energy from that when they came into
- 23:31Speaker 5: play this in quarterfinals and semi finals. But thankfully we
- 23:35Speaker 5: learned and again you'll learn from experience and sometimes you
- 23:37Speaker 5: have to go through that heartbreak and sometimes you have
- 23:39Speaker 5: to evolve with it and I think we did that.
- 23:41Speaker 5: And the reality is good players coming through. If you
- 23:45Speaker 5: think of it, what the impact pawfully in and dear
- 23:47Speaker 5: McConnelly and guys like that that we didn't have at
- 23:50Speaker 5: certain times, and when guys with that skill set come in,
- 23:53Speaker 5: it adds to the squad and that's effectively what got
- 23:56Speaker 5: us over the line in the end. That kind of
- 23:58Speaker 5: the improvement in terms of playing personnel and ultimately your
- 24:01Speaker 5: needs a full squad, and I suppose when you look
- 24:04Speaker 5: at the NFL, the different comparisons, like we've probably had
- 24:06Speaker 5: a squad at thirty four thirty five NFL, you're up
- 24:09Speaker 5: into fifty odd players and trying to get that many
- 24:11Speaker 5: guys to pull together and have that sense of it
- 24:15Speaker 5: can't be about one or two guys, and it can't
- 24:17Speaker 5: be While there'll always be a start, there will always
- 24:19Speaker 5: be someone who has that kind of MDP type performance. Ultimately,
- 24:22Speaker 5: unless the whole group are pulling in the same direction before,
- 24:25Speaker 5: and you're not going to get there. And it probably
- 24:26Speaker 5: took us a couple of tough years to learn that.
- 24:28Speaker 5: Like I was, that was my ninth year, tent tieer,
- 24:30Speaker 5: gone into the tent year and the squad, and I'm
- 24:33Speaker 5: just grateful that we got there because there's lots of
- 24:35Speaker 5: guys have had careers longer than I have and they
- 24:37Speaker 5: didn't get there in the end. So yeah, but it
- 24:39Speaker 5: was it was. It was relief probably was one of
- 24:42Speaker 5: the initial feelings, but then the obviously ultimate satisfaction and
- 24:45Speaker 5: enjoyed and win a cham.
- 24:49Speaker 3: Malassie.
- 24:50Speaker 2: You played in two of the flight football games that
- 24:53Speaker 2: the late Embassador Ronie used to hold and be in
- 24:57Speaker 2: his residence in the Phoenix Park in the four of July.
- 24:59Speaker 3: You know, can you that's what that was like?
- 25:03Speaker 5: You just asked me about pressure. I felt. I've taken
- 25:05Speaker 5: freeze in front of eighty two thousand people, and I
- 25:08Speaker 5: felt more pressure at my first point after in front
- 25:10Speaker 5: of a couple of hundred people in Seoenix Park. As
- 25:14Speaker 5: it's meant up be considered a straightforward operation, but when
- 25:16Speaker 5: you have as much practice, do you know what? They were? Brilliant,
- 25:20Speaker 5: really really cool experiences. That was two thirteen, twenty fourteen.
- 25:24Speaker 5: For the two years that I played, and we're fortunate
- 25:26Speaker 5: a couple of my X Dublin teammates, Aim and Fennol,
- 25:29Speaker 5: Barry Calle, Jason Sherlock, Garol evolved as well and they
- 25:32Speaker 5: were paired up with some of the local Irish American
- 25:35Speaker 5: football teams, the Dublin Rebels and or one of them,
- 25:37Speaker 5: and just really good guys, really welcoming. I think they
- 25:41Speaker 5: knew we did genuine and interesting at the guys that
- 25:43Speaker 5: we came in and they could see from the start
- 25:45Speaker 5: and it was just fantastic experience and the whole thing,
- 25:49Speaker 5: genuinely the town was set by Ambassador Rooney. When you
- 25:52Speaker 5: got to the Embattle. When you got to the residence,
- 25:54Speaker 5: it was such a family, fun occasion. There was loads
- 25:57Speaker 5: of different things going on and everyone was welcome and
- 25:59Speaker 5: there was a real sense that everyone wanted to be
- 26:01Speaker 5: there and it was it was just it was totally
- 26:04Speaker 5: enjoyable and the game gone a little bit competitive, which
- 26:06Speaker 5: is it's meant flag football. There was a couple of
- 26:09Speaker 5: it wasn't just flag football at times, which was which
- 26:11Speaker 5: was pretty interesting as well. And the first year Ben
- 26:16Speaker 5: Roethlisberger came over as well. He was there as a guest,
- 26:18Speaker 5: so we got to meet him. I think he did
- 26:20Speaker 5: the coin toss and a couple of different things like that.
- 26:22Speaker 5: So it was with brilliant as a as an NFL
- 26:24Speaker 5: not it was. It was one of the coolest things
- 26:26Speaker 5: from a sport and thing that we've got to do. Yeah,
- 26:30Speaker 5: it's funny that you say there mostly Big Ben was there.
- 26:33Speaker 5: I remember saying that. And what was he like as
- 26:35Speaker 5: a person?
- 26:35Speaker 4: Was he because obviously nowadays you don't really hear much
- 26:38Speaker 4: of him because he's not really an immediate type of person.
- 26:40Speaker 4: He's just sort of getting on with with his retirement
- 26:43Speaker 4: and stuff. What was he like as a person?
- 26:45Speaker 1: Was he?
- 26:45Speaker 4: Was he maybe as a stern as he comes across
- 26:48Speaker 4: on screen, maybe no, do you know what he was?
- 26:50Speaker 5: And then again going back to he was there with
- 26:52Speaker 5: Ambasador running. He was a guest, and there was obviously
- 26:54Speaker 5: one or two the Steelers organization there on the day,
- 26:57Speaker 5: And because it was such a relaxed enviornment, there was
- 26:59Speaker 5: no it wasn't media face, and it wasn't kind of
- 27:03Speaker 5: there wasn't cameras that were going to put it out
- 27:04Speaker 5: the following week. So felt a bit more genuine, if
- 27:07Speaker 5: a bit more attentive. I'd been fortunate enough to do
- 27:09Speaker 5: a number of NFL related events with different players in
- 27:11Speaker 5: Dublin over the years, and you could see sometimes they're
- 27:13Speaker 5: switched on, if they're if their media team are with
- 27:16Speaker 5: them and things like that. But he was there with
- 27:18Speaker 5: his wife and it was very much There was the
- 27:20Speaker 5: barbecues behind the goal, there was you know, drinks and
- 27:23Speaker 5: different things, and he was standing there and he was
- 27:24Speaker 5: mixing with everybody and he was more than happy to
- 27:26Speaker 5: take pictures. And that's why it kind of felt like
- 27:28Speaker 5: it was. It wasn't a didn't feel like an occasion
- 27:31Speaker 5: where he had an hour of his time and he
- 27:33Speaker 5: had to be here and he'd gone somewhere else. It
- 27:35Speaker 5: was very much that he was there for the day
- 27:37Speaker 5: and and that was what he was doing. And it
- 27:38Speaker 5: was so from that sense, he was chatting away. He
- 27:40Speaker 5: was asked, someone explained him about get football and he
- 27:44Speaker 5: was asking us about that. So yeah, I know again
- 27:46Speaker 5: it was it was. It was a brilliant setting to
- 27:47Speaker 5: meet him in because like I said, it didn't really rushed,
- 27:49Speaker 5: and yeah, it was.
- 27:50Speaker 4: It was cool like Ben wien Low and Love as
- 27:53Speaker 4: the movie.
- 27:53Speaker 5: He could say yeah, and he's think he's he's a
- 27:56Speaker 5: shit again. Unsurprisingly, a huge man like gen Amon's final
- 28:00Speaker 5: would have play miss up for Dublin in the name
- 28:01Speaker 5: I would be six at least six from four, I
- 28:03Speaker 5: would say, and jeez, looks small compared to standing beside
- 28:07Speaker 5: even just a wait of them, you know. So it
- 28:08Speaker 5: was yeah, from that side, it was it was good.
- 28:12Speaker 1: Well here I think, you know, seriously, like how high
- 28:16Speaker 1: lucky we are as a country or just as an
- 28:18Speaker 1: island to have that relationship. It's just unbelievable. And you're
- 28:21Speaker 1: looking at Mack ten years there and that's happening. Who
- 28:24Speaker 1: knows what's going to happen ahead, It's just great to see.
- 28:26Speaker 1: And one thing that's happened so far from that day
- 28:30Speaker 1: in Croker, which is only a few months ago, is
- 28:32Speaker 1: I guess big digitally wise obviously has been you know,
- 28:34Speaker 1: an honor and fantastic to have to start the podcast
- 28:37Speaker 1: with these boys here. But having the leaders and GA
- 28:40Speaker 1: goes pretty cool, isn't it. Like I mean, the opportunity
- 28:42Speaker 1: just to put the service on and just watch preseason
- 28:46Speaker 1: games either live or the next morning. It's amazing Mansie
- 28:48Speaker 1: to think of the possibilities just in regards to that,
- 28:52Speaker 1: but what could just happen and honestly just bring in
- 28:55Speaker 1: not just a whole new generation of NFL fans in Ireland,
- 28:58Speaker 1: but a whole new generations leader comes as well.
- 29:01Speaker 5: It's fantastic And again, like I said, anythink back to
- 29:04Speaker 5: my waiting four weeks for Sports Illustrated to come to
- 29:06Speaker 5: read what was happening, and we're sitting here able to
- 29:08Speaker 5: watch the Steelers live in pre season on GA go.
- 29:11Speaker 5: It's it's it's brilliant and it's again as part of
- 29:15Speaker 5: my role I work with up in GA and and
- 29:17Speaker 5: live stream and and all of our digital content falls
- 29:19Speaker 5: under my remit. So it's an area of a huge
- 29:22Speaker 5: personal interesting but even from a work perspective, and I
- 29:25Speaker 5: think it's a fantastic in issue from GA go and
- 29:27Speaker 5: from the Steelers to come together and to offer that.
- 29:30Speaker 5: And again, if you look at the content that the
- 29:32Speaker 5: NFL teams are putting out from behind the scenes, from
- 29:34Speaker 5: training camp, from particularly around draft days and different things
- 29:37Speaker 5: like that, that might have been considered in the past,
- 29:39Speaker 5: content that they would have wanted to keep in house
- 29:41Speaker 5: or secretive. And it's as fans, it's were kind of
- 29:44Speaker 5: spoilt at the moment with the amount of the amount
- 29:47Speaker 5: of content that's out there. And from an Irish perspective,
- 29:49Speaker 5: when you can get those little added benefits of their
- 29:51Speaker 5: relationship with the Steelers, all the better and hopefully more
- 29:53Speaker 5: of it to come.
- 29:56Speaker 2: Must we're seeing the transition now of a lot of
- 29:58Speaker 2: GA players to the m bell and to American football,
- 30:02Speaker 2: you know, primarily in Ireland through either kicking and the
- 30:05Speaker 2: work that Tiger is doing there. And of course Dan
- 30:08Speaker 2: Ronnie with Junia was over at the weekend overseeing the
- 30:11Speaker 2: final of Ireland's Kicking King, which is fantastic to see.
- 30:15Speaker 2: And most recently we have former leash inter county player
- 30:19Speaker 2: Ross Balder have made the move to play at the
- 30:21Speaker 2: Division one level. So first of all, do you think
- 30:24Speaker 2: that we're going to see this becoming a more common
- 30:27Speaker 2: trend in the years to come? And second of all,
- 30:29Speaker 2: do you wish you'd give them a go yourself.
- 30:33Speaker 5: I would have loved to show he's trying to work out.
- 30:35Speaker 5: I was looking at Tiger's Tiger in rights out last
- 30:37Speaker 5: week and working out gowns a forty two year old
- 30:39Speaker 5: rock Cup for all these sixty he's asking for seventeen
- 30:42Speaker 5: and eighteen nineteen. He was trying to work out ou
- 30:44Speaker 5: out of the place. I'd love but I would have
- 30:47Speaker 5: loved the shot out. It would have been like and
- 30:49Speaker 5: it is up. The reality is it is going to
- 30:50Speaker 5: become more commonplace and the skill set of Irish Irish
- 30:53Speaker 5: GA players rugby players obviously, but GA players in particular,
- 30:56Speaker 5: and you look at it. And I followed Ross from
- 30:58Speaker 5: the start since he's gone over. I was actually fortunate
- 31:01Speaker 5: enough to meet his dad that day in in Pro
- 31:03Speaker 5: Park and the Steelers launch. His dad will be involved
- 31:05Speaker 5: with one of the other counties here in the GA,
- 31:07Speaker 5: and he comes from a good family. He's got a
- 31:10Speaker 5: brilliant opportunity. What a lfe opportunity to get to the
- 31:13Speaker 5: jo over there, and obviously we're looking at it from
- 31:15Speaker 5: a football perspective, but just from an overalls as him
- 31:18Speaker 5: as a person, what an opportunity has and Tiger's done
- 31:21Speaker 5: brilliant work in terms of kind of opening those doors
- 31:24Speaker 5: and setting the path and place for guys like that.
- 31:26Speaker 5: So I think the natural progression is you'll see a
- 31:28Speaker 5: lot more than the bombs seen going a little bit
- 31:30Speaker 5: before some of the Aussie reels guys already over there
- 31:33Speaker 5: making a big impact in the league and the pluntin
- 31:35Speaker 5: point of view, But like I think some of the
- 31:37Speaker 5: videos you see guys sickly Irish guys been both footed
- 31:40Speaker 5: being tip kicking, right foot, left foot. The opportunities that
- 31:43Speaker 5: brings in terms of if you're under pressure, if there's
- 31:45Speaker 5: someone rushing from one side or the other, and I
- 31:47Speaker 5: do think it's something you're going to see more of.
- 31:49Speaker 5: I think there'll be more obviously at the NFL is
- 31:52Speaker 5: expanding in terms of what they're doing in the UK
- 31:54Speaker 5: and and and within Europe, and yeah, I think it's
- 31:57Speaker 5: only a matter of time before there's guys guys making
- 31:59Speaker 5: an impacts from a natural Irish guys making a name
- 32:02Speaker 5: actorate in the within the NFL.
- 32:05Speaker 3: You might save a couple of years. Let's need to
- 32:07Speaker 3: make a stave at US based to.
- 32:09Speaker 5: Be a stated Yeah, I'm I'm hoping if the Steelers there,
- 32:12Speaker 5: if the Steelers are any last minute, any last minute
- 32:15Speaker 5: issues on the kicking side, I'm happy to eaven for it,
- 32:17Speaker 5: even for a trial visit. I'm happy to make make
- 32:20Speaker 5: myself there.
- 32:20Speaker 1: But well here, imagine the crack. I I know you
- 32:26Speaker 1: got our glad from he was just just to jump
- 32:28Speaker 1: in because you boys were mentioning. Ross does great crack
- 32:31Speaker 1: and also master Congrats to Andy Quinn who won the
- 32:34Speaker 1: Ireland's Kicking King for the second year of the row.
- 32:36Speaker 1: Andy a gets a company, he's won a competition. He
- 32:39Speaker 1: gets to go over to the Steels Ravens game I
- 32:42Speaker 1: believe in October. So big props to the Steters for that.
- 32:44Speaker 1: And Andy is a kicker with the NFL Academy in
- 32:46Speaker 1: London and diev He's a Rossie. His dad have to
- 32:50Speaker 1: give me out. He's a great crack, lovely man. But
- 32:53Speaker 1: it's great deal, isn't it. Just see what's going on?
- 32:56Speaker 5: If no, that's I'm saying, it's it's good seeing.
- 32:58Speaker 4: You know, these these players are transition from our game
- 33:00Speaker 4: and you know into the NFL games. As Mossi said,
- 33:03Speaker 4: you know he's taken a lot of big freeze and
- 33:06Speaker 4: heading into the hill, you know with the Windy Hill
- 33:08Speaker 4: on a September evening. So yeah, it's it's great to see.
- 33:11Speaker 4: I just obviously want to fight out from yourself, Massa.
- 33:14Speaker 4: You know we messed upout the NFL Global Markets program
- 33:17Speaker 4: and how significant significant do you feel a lot of
- 33:20Speaker 4: it is? You know, we have the Steelers out there
- 33:21Speaker 4: in the ash market because it just seems like a
- 33:23Speaker 4: massive opportunity in itself.
- 33:26Speaker 5: There's no doubts it's a huge opportunity and it's and
- 33:29Speaker 5: again the NFL, and they've already I think the fact
- 33:33Speaker 5: that we're so close to London, we've seen obviously the
- 33:35Speaker 5: Jaguars kind of been the lynch pin of what they've
- 33:38Speaker 5: done in London today with that expanding out now to
- 33:40Speaker 5: more and more games. So what went on last year
- 33:43Speaker 5: in Germany again, that's expanding in Germany this year. So
- 33:46Speaker 5: they've seen the success. They can look across the water
- 33:49Speaker 5: and see what certain what certain organizations have done. But
- 33:52Speaker 5: I think the big thing is the natural connection between
- 33:55Speaker 5: the Steelers and Ireland. There's a genuine connection there. It's
- 33:58Speaker 5: not something that you kind of have to from a
- 34:00Speaker 5: marketing point of view, you have to try and come
- 34:02Speaker 5: up with and you're trying to You're you're trying to
- 34:05Speaker 5: brainstorm and say, well, how can we find it's authentic.
- 34:07Speaker 5: It's there, like the Ruining family, the history of the Steelers,
- 34:10Speaker 5: the fact that they even play the preseason game and
- 34:12Speaker 5: crow Park and many years ago, all those connections are
- 34:15Speaker 5: real and I think that's something that will translate very
- 34:18Speaker 5: very well. And I think it's something The level of
- 34:20Speaker 5: interest in the NFL in Ireland is massive, and I
- 34:23Speaker 5: just think it's it's it's wide open and I think
- 34:25Speaker 5: it's so I'm genuinely excited to see what happens with
- 34:28Speaker 5: the opportunity. How I guess the fact that we're talking
- 34:30Speaker 5: on a podcast like what you guys are doing on
- 34:32Speaker 5: a on a regular basis, just just highlights the opportunities
- 34:35Speaker 5: that are there. And yeah, the NFL have done a
- 34:38Speaker 5: brilliant job. Again, the fact that it's the Steelers, I
- 34:41Speaker 5: think AD's for one of the most historical, one of
- 34:42Speaker 5: the most powerful franchises within the within the league is
- 34:45Speaker 5: just an added benefit for for all of Ireland.
- 34:49Speaker 1: And as I look like a agreeable and just a
- 34:52Speaker 1: last just a last round of question and going into
- 34:55Speaker 1: what you said that the Steelers have an ice on
- 34:57Speaker 1: their website staters dot com slash Iland as part of
- 34:59Speaker 1: them long term planting, they were aspired to return to
- 35:03Speaker 1: the Island play in the NFL game. I mean, like, luckily,
- 35:06Speaker 1: let's just imagine for a minute it was in Crude
- 35:08Speaker 1: Park and as someone has played there many times and
- 35:12Speaker 1: you've sort of talked a wee bit about it there,
- 35:14Speaker 1: but genuinely, after the weekend that we've had in Dublin
- 35:16Speaker 1: and we've seen the crack for a start, how awesome
- 35:19Speaker 1: would that be? And like, you know, do you feel
- 35:21Speaker 1: that Fruit Park is the perfect place of it because
- 35:24Speaker 1: I can just imagine the hill. You wouldn't get that
- 35:26Speaker 1: in any other NFL stadium. So it's just the possibilities
- 35:30Speaker 1: are just endless. And you can imagine that this keep
- 35:33Speaker 1: this keeps me up at night in a good way
- 35:35Speaker 1: of just thinking about it.
- 35:36Speaker 5: Yeah, you could imagine the footage of the terrible towels
- 35:39Speaker 5: going on with Hill sixteen going and bouncing in the background.
- 35:41Speaker 5: You know, and I think one of the the Aviva
- 35:44Speaker 5: did a brilliant job of the weekend. But I just
- 35:46Speaker 5: think when you think you're adding an extra thirty thousand
- 35:48Speaker 5: people coming to Pro Park in terms of from a
- 35:51Speaker 5: spectator point of view, and one of the beauties that
- 35:53Speaker 5: haven't Pro Park is it's in within walking distance to
- 35:56Speaker 5: the city. So you saw the brilliant followers, the brilliant
- 35:59Speaker 5: images of the the Notre Dame and the Navy fans
- 36:01Speaker 5: marching out from from the city center. Just the scale
- 36:05Speaker 5: of that coming into Dublin City into crowd Park, and
- 36:07Speaker 5: I think how how well the stadium is set up
- 36:12Speaker 5: to deal with such an occasion, And and I think.
- 36:15Speaker 4: That's that for me.
- 36:16Speaker 5: It is it's one of the without question, one of
- 36:17Speaker 5: the best stadiums in Europe, and we should be very
- 36:20Speaker 5: proud of at the GA do a brilliant job in
- 36:22Speaker 5: there in terms of how they mind it. And again,
- 36:23Speaker 5: like you said, the day we were in there, you
- 36:25Speaker 5: walked it, you looked at it's it's a carpet like
- 36:27Speaker 5: it's it's nearly like it's immaculate. When you walk out,
- 36:30Speaker 5: you just think the opportunities are having an American football
- 36:33Speaker 5: game there and having the Steelers back there, And yeah,
- 36:36Speaker 5: I think from a from a city and from a
- 36:38Speaker 5: I think we've shown we can handle the like we
- 36:41Speaker 5: see that the weekend in terms of people coming in
- 36:43Speaker 5: and out of the city, in terms of from a
- 36:45Speaker 5: spectator point of view, from a tourism point of view
- 36:47Speaker 5: from it, and again the locals just get behind it
- 36:49Speaker 5: even more. And you can think of that every single
- 36:52Speaker 5: NFL team Jersey would be on show that day. It'd
- 36:54Speaker 5: be people coming from all all over the world to
- 36:56Speaker 5: see it. Put the whole of Ireland have come and
- 36:58Speaker 5: try and get tickets to see that. So let's hope
- 37:01Speaker 5: it comes to fruition in the coming years.
- 37:04Speaker 2: Yeah, absolutely, And you know, if it is to happen
- 37:08Speaker 2: in the in the near future, I'm sure that Kenny
- 37:11Speaker 2: Picker will be that the established quarterback at the Staters backstage.
- 37:14Speaker 2: So it's a big year now for Kenny Picker going
- 37:17Speaker 2: into year or two as the Theaters starting quarterback. And
- 37:21Speaker 2: how do you find him so far? You can't be
- 37:25Speaker 2: but impressed with his starting with the preseason.
- 37:27Speaker 5: He'd obviously a very solid first year last year and
- 37:30Speaker 5: I think obviously with waterback, you're always looking to see
- 37:33Speaker 5: that evolution and the development, and it seems and what
- 37:36Speaker 5: we've seen already this year. And I like Mike Tomlin's
- 37:39Speaker 5: quote that you have to spar a little bit before
- 37:41Speaker 5: you get in and go and fight, you know. So
- 37:43Speaker 5: he's getting ready. He got reps in preseason and it
- 37:46Speaker 5: was great to see that, like selling Ga going and
- 37:48Speaker 5: he's got some good weapons there as well. And you
- 37:50Speaker 5: can see I enjoyed watching Caldon Austin in the preseason.
- 37:54Speaker 5: He made some really really very exciting plays And yeah,
- 37:58Speaker 5: I'm the reality is, you look the AFC, it's pretty
- 38:01Speaker 5: stacked at quarterbacks. So the reality is you want to compete,
- 38:03Speaker 5: and you want to come out of even the division
- 38:05Speaker 5: they're in at the moment, they're going to need a
- 38:06Speaker 5: quarterback playing at a high level, and it looks like
- 38:08Speaker 5: he's on that trajectory. So I think it's a really
- 38:10Speaker 5: exciting time to be a Steelers fan.
- 38:14Speaker 4: Yeah, and I've even sort of went out pussed the
- 38:17Speaker 4: boat out and predicted he's going to be m v
- 38:19Speaker 4: P this year. Probably a bit ambitious, but we'll see.
- 38:22Speaker 4: You never know, but I just obviously know with the
- 38:26Speaker 4: f C Northromost it's potentially the best division in football.
- 38:28Speaker 4: I think it is. You know, if you look at
- 38:30Speaker 4: the teams in there, I don't think anybody can actually
- 38:32Speaker 4: win it. So what are your thoughts on it? Do
- 38:34Speaker 4: you see is there any specific team? Obviously you have
- 38:36Speaker 4: the Bengals and stuff amount of people's Super Bowl pick.
- 38:39Speaker 4: Do you see maybe how the Steelers can transition into
- 38:41Speaker 4: like a winning team and not division?
- 38:44Speaker 5: I'd agree that it is the best division. You just
- 38:46Speaker 5: look at the quarterbacks in it. I think they sets
- 38:48Speaker 5: the town for the teams and I think for me,
- 38:53Speaker 5: when you look at all this historically strong Steelers teams,
- 38:56Speaker 5: it's what they do on the defensive side of the ball,
- 38:58Speaker 5: and I think in that division. To successful in that division,
- 39:01Speaker 5: you obviously need your quarterback, which we talked about, but
- 39:03Speaker 5: you also need a defense that can make a stop
- 39:05Speaker 5: or two. You mightn't shut down those teams when it
- 39:07Speaker 5: gets tight in the fourth quarter and the balls coming down.
- 39:10Speaker 5: You want the ball with your team where you're in
- 39:12Speaker 5: a position to win the game, and I think your
- 39:13Speaker 5: defense has to give you that. So obviously TJ. Wat's
- 39:16Speaker 5: huge on that side of it. The back end in
- 39:18Speaker 5: terms of trying to cover the lights that Jamar Chase
- 39:20Speaker 5: isn't going to be easy. The Ravens have obviously upgraded
- 39:23Speaker 5: as well in terms of their wide receiver sets, So
- 39:25Speaker 5: I think there's going to be some really really tight
- 39:28Speaker 5: games in that division, and I think generally who comes
- 39:31Speaker 5: out of that division is going to be really well
- 39:32Speaker 5: placed going into the playoffs. But yeah, I'm really excited
- 39:35Speaker 5: to watch.
- 39:35Speaker 1: It, really excited to just see how the season goes.
- 39:39Speaker 1: Mostly and look, we mostly appreciate your time coming on here.
- 39:42Speaker 1: It was good to see you. They cut park a
- 39:44Speaker 1: few months ago. And hopefully whenever this the leaders announced
- 39:47Speaker 1: this event that's going to take place to fall meet
- 39:49Speaker 1: up just whenever and wherever it may be, maybe we'll
- 39:53Speaker 1: see you there. But for now, you thank you so
- 39:55Speaker 1: much for your time, and we hope you enjoyed the
- 39:57Speaker 1: seasonste Hopefully we're talking to you in I guess a
- 40:00Speaker 1: couple of days before the Steers are playing in the
- 40:02Speaker 1: Super Bowl. But Gerby loggoins, I will chat deson.
- 40:05Speaker 5: I'm only talking to Vegas. Have been there in person,
- 40:07Speaker 5: which allows yes.
- 40:08Speaker 1: Today and that was Mossy Quinn. Look lads great here
- 40:17Speaker 1: Mossy Quinn. Obviously you know Mossie's and Massive Master NFL
- 40:21Speaker 1: fun and I think you could hear in that interview
- 40:23Speaker 1: how much of meetings to him to hear just see
- 40:26Speaker 1: as well how much the Steelers are doing for the
- 40:30Speaker 1: game here in Ireland. So that definitely is allowed to
- 40:33Speaker 1: have mussy on him. We definitely appreciate hearing from us.
- 40:35Speaker 1: Hopefully we can see him maybe at a fun event
- 40:38Speaker 1: during the season TBC before we go into a couple
- 40:42Speaker 1: of quick things before we run up this week's podcast
- 40:44Speaker 1: where we're going to give a highlight the preseason each
- 40:47Speaker 1: and I want to talk very very quickly boys about
- 40:50Speaker 1: the twenty twenty three Steelers World Photo Day. Fans around
- 40:55Speaker 1: the world have a passion for Staders football. This is
- 40:57Speaker 1: an opportunity if you're a fan in our this Sunday
- 41:01Speaker 1: to take part and show your support on social media.
- 41:05Speaker 1: So this Sunday provides Steelers Nation around the below the
- 41:08Speaker 1: perfect opportunity to put their black and gold on and
- 41:10Speaker 1: show their support for the Staters ahead of our opener
- 41:13Speaker 1: next week against the San Francisco forty nine Ers. How
- 41:16Speaker 1: do you get involved? It's really easy, folks. You can
- 41:19Speaker 1: gather in a large group locally with friends or family
- 41:22Speaker 1: at a local landmark. So for example, Jimmy and Drahada
- 41:24Speaker 1: there or in your fan cave like Stephen Currents as
- 41:27Speaker 1: or even with a flag from your country if you
- 41:29Speaker 1: would like. Wherever and however you want to show your
- 41:32Speaker 1: love for the team at home, school, work, take a
- 41:35Speaker 1: picture this Sunday, share it on social media using the
- 41:38Speaker 1: hashtag Staeters Worldwide. I would recommend also, folks if you
- 41:42Speaker 1: also tag us on X, Instagram and Facebook Steeters Ireland.
- 41:48Speaker 1: There are Staelers Ireland accounts on X and Instagram, so
- 41:52Speaker 1: make sure you do that there and also use the
- 41:53Speaker 1: hashtag Steers Ireland and we will give people a shout
- 41:56Speaker 1: out next week. And even thinking of the top of
- 41:57Speaker 1: my head right now, Neil Ogul, who's up in n
- 42:00Speaker 1: he'll definitely be taking the photos. So looking forward to
- 42:02Speaker 1: seeing all these photos next week. And boys, I'm looking
- 42:04Speaker 1: forward to seeing your photos. I'll certainly get one going
- 42:07Speaker 1: as well and on this so the pressure's on and
- 42:10Speaker 1: there's a lot of fans in Ireland are going to
- 42:11Speaker 1: do that, so certainly I think it's a great idea,
- 42:14Speaker 1: looking forward to seeing it. Let's jump in, boys, I
- 42:18Speaker 1: mean to, let's do a double sort of conversation here.
- 42:22Speaker 1: First off, where are we going to get our photos from.
- 42:24Speaker 1: And secondly, what was the one highlight of the preseason?
- 42:28Speaker 1: I guess for me, boys Boto is going to be
- 42:31Speaker 1: done from potentially across that apparently Sympatrick himself built in
- 42:36Speaker 1: dolic moored idea of knows what it is, that's the
- 42:39Speaker 1: rumor he did build it. So it's a very very
- 42:41Speaker 1: old cross. I'll give back to you on that high
- 42:43Speaker 1: had of the preseason for me is obvious it's Kenny Pickett.
- 42:46Speaker 1: I think a lot of fans last year looking around
- 42:49Speaker 1: the league, if your staeters full are not locked at
- 42:51Speaker 1: the progression that he made in the last few games
- 42:54Speaker 1: of the season, But more so now, the guy is
- 42:57Speaker 1: like a kid that had to repeat his exams and
- 42:59Speaker 1: the summer, took the whole summer off, locked his door
- 43:02Speaker 1: and practiced and revised. The guy looks so so revved
- 43:07Speaker 1: up and refreshed, and you can see the clear leap
- 43:09Speaker 1: to Kenny pick Gets made one in the year two. Unbelievable.
- 43:13Speaker 1: And what do you said at the start, MVP A, Well,
- 43:15Speaker 1: I'm not gonna go as far as that, but certainly
- 43:17Speaker 1: this team is in a very very good position as
- 43:19Speaker 1: we go into the regular season. And Jimmy, I can't
- 43:22Speaker 1: believe him saying this. The regular season, which starts next Sunday, Sunday,
- 43:27Speaker 1: the tenth of September against the San Francisco forty nine
- 43:31Speaker 1: Ers in Orchestrare Stadium, tell me what's your highlight, Jimmy,
- 43:35Speaker 1: out of presuming you're I'm presuming you're going to be
- 43:37Speaker 1: standing in Drahada at that roundabout. That's the only place
- 43:40Speaker 1: I know.
- 43:41Speaker 2: So yeah, absolutely, Mike, I'll definitely be get a good
- 43:44Speaker 2: picture for the Steeters fan event the worldwide thought today
- 43:48Speaker 2: and Sunday of a couple of spot in mind right
- 43:51Speaker 2: too where I be hosting my Steeiers Jersey with my
- 43:55Speaker 2: green Terrible tel and I'm also excited to see where
- 43:58Speaker 2: Whereabouts span and come up with fans and Ireland come
- 44:01Speaker 2: up with there for their photos. That's gonna be exciting.
- 44:04Speaker 2: And then the highlight for me of the pre season
- 44:06Speaker 2: would have to be Calvin Austin. Of course, he was
- 44:09Speaker 2: lost the entirety of last season, and I think we
- 44:11Speaker 2: missed out on the explosion of that is that the operas,
- 44:14Speaker 2: so he you know, not just in special themes, but
- 44:17Speaker 2: also on on offense. He had that long, speedy touchdown
- 44:21Speaker 2: in week one. But he's being fantastic returning once he
- 44:24Speaker 2: almost broke away a couple of big part returns, so
- 44:27Speaker 2: I'm definitely excited to see what he can bring it
- 44:29Speaker 2: to us this season.
- 44:31Speaker 1: Absolutely, and I'm looking forward to save were photos coming
- 44:34Speaker 1: from for the fantastic day that we're going to Holpen somedays.
- 44:38Speaker 1: See all these photos coming from around the world, hopefully
- 44:40Speaker 1: as many given Mardin as possible. Did I know you're
- 44:42Speaker 1: not a moment, but like actually to fly back to
- 44:44Speaker 1: Caliland or Clono and stand outside Spring Island and get
- 44:49Speaker 1: that terrible tielight and get a photo or feeling that
- 44:52Speaker 1: if you're in Liverpool and the Cavern club will do rightly. Yeah,
- 44:56Speaker 1: do you know what?
- 44:56Speaker 4: I might just get the flight back and sitting mcgerr's
- 44:59Speaker 4: pub on Someday morning with my with my Steelers Jersey
- 45:01Speaker 4: on see who who sort of shows their face in there?
- 45:05Speaker 4: But in the whole series, now obviously I'm in Liverpool.
- 45:10Speaker 4: Maybe a lot of people would say, oh, sure you
- 45:11Speaker 4: go to on Fields. Well unfortunately not on me and
- 45:13Speaker 4: Edi fan, so I'll be getting the trained straight to
- 45:15Speaker 4: Old Trafford. I'm posing the black and yellow outside Old Trafford.
- 45:18Speaker 4: So that's my plans right there. Mag just obviously interesting
- 45:21Speaker 4: to see where the or what the fans come up
- 45:23Speaker 4: with this week as well. We want to see some
- 45:24Speaker 4: good ones throughout Arnold as well, So with their plenty obviously,
- 45:28Speaker 4: I want to see one down and the bill Arney
- 45:29Speaker 4: Stone hopefully fingers cross we have cork or some claws
- 45:32Speaker 4: down and cork and but yeah, in terms of May one,
- 45:37Speaker 4: May one obviously key thing from pre season, it's not
- 45:40Speaker 4: really going to surprise anybody, but it's it's it's Nick Herbig.
- 45:43Speaker 4: If you look back at his pre season seven tackles,
- 45:46Speaker 4: three and a half sacks, one force fumble, Like that's
- 45:49Speaker 4: as good starts as you can probably wish for from
- 45:51Speaker 4: a from a rookie going in this first pre season.
- 45:53Speaker 4: So it's not really going to surprise anybody that I've
- 45:56Speaker 4: chosen him for me, and you know, everybody knows me.
- 45:59Speaker 4: I've had a sort of like I could have said,
- 46:02Speaker 4: I liking towards neck, you know, yeah, from the start.
- 46:06Speaker 4: I think it just shows we knew how good of
- 46:07Speaker 4: a player he was going out of college. So yeah,
- 46:09Speaker 4: that's that's my one one key from pre season.
- 46:12Speaker 1: I think it just shows is the level of that
- 46:13Speaker 1: expectation and at the level of excitement that we have
- 46:16Speaker 1: because Jimmy at field like an Arland Ispacially, the football
- 46:18Speaker 1: season is already back, and obviously it has been back
- 46:21Speaker 1: for weeks in pre seasons, but especially with ever and
- 46:23Speaker 1: that we've seen last week at the high school games
- 46:24Speaker 1: of don coming over with the college games, it just
- 46:27Speaker 1: seems like a great time to be a fan here
- 46:29Speaker 1: and we can't wait for this Niners game next week.
- 46:30Speaker 1: It's going to be awesome and we can't wait to
- 46:32Speaker 1: see where this watch part is going to be the season,
- 46:34Speaker 1: which we hope will be announced very very soon. Obviously. Folks,

- 46:57Speaker 1: next week as we go into week one month Week
- 47:00Speaker 1: one previous show scary but scary scary biscuits.
- 47:03Speaker 3: Yeah, absolutely, just to to echo what you said there,
- 47:07Speaker 3: might do.
- 47:07Speaker 2: It's been a great build up to the season so far,
- 47:09Speaker 2: between what we've been doing here on the podcast, you know,
- 47:12Speaker 2: getting excited and seeing what the Fitters can do.
- 47:14Speaker 3: But also on the isle of the Barland there's been
- 47:16Speaker 3: some really really great engagement pro fans.
- 47:21Speaker 2: You can even feel it a part the night there
- 47:23Speaker 2: and Danny Brook, you know, under lights watching some American football,
- 47:27Speaker 2: it was it was almost like we were we were
- 47:30Speaker 2: over in the States, the light style and get ready
- 47:34Speaker 2: for the season ahead. And just I think seeing the
- 47:37Speaker 2: popularity of American football that are and grow year on year,
- 47:42Speaker 2: it's it's great for me as a fan and as
- 47:43Speaker 2: someone who has been involved in it for years, so
- 47:46Speaker 2: and like it's just it's gonna be a great, a
- 47:48Speaker 2: great couple of months once once September rolls around.
- 47:52Speaker 1: Absolutely, and Dave looking forward to me and I know
- 47:55Speaker 1: we'll talk a lot more, both of you. Last Tommy

- 48:14Speaker 1: But seriously, folks, do enjoy it. It's going to be

- 48:24Speaker 1: excitement for the season, and it's unique. You don't really
