- 0:55SPEAKER_01: I'm Blake Middleton of Elite Roofing Professionals and Exteriors.
- 0:58SPEAKER_01: I'm a veteran, and I brought the same mission first mindset back to Illinois.
- 1:03SPEAKER_01: While others talk about the way it's always been done, my team focuses on the technical precision of how a roof should be built.

- 1:28SPEAKER_03: I'm your host, Chris Hartsuok with the Big Dog Construction, your local window depot.
- 1:32SPEAKER_03: And as usual, I've got my amazing co-host Caitlin Borgini with me here.
- 1:36SPEAKER_02: Hello.
- 1:37SPEAKER_03: Hey Caitlin, welcome back to the show.
- 1:38SPEAKER_03: I'm excited to have you here as we continue walking our listeners through the Big Dog Game Plan.
- 1:44SPEAKER_03: It has been a great, great policy that we've had to be able to talk to our listeners about.
- 1:48SPEAKER_03: And if you've been following along with this series, we've been giving homeowners a step-by-step roadmap to making smarter decisions about their homes.
- 1:56SPEAKER_03: We've talked about creating your game plan, setting a realistic budget, knowing when to DIY, when to call us professionals, defining your scope, choosing the right contractor, understanding what happens during the remodeling process, managing change orders, protecting your investment.
- 2:10SPEAKER_03: As you can tell, we've done a lot of stuff on these podcasts for you, turning your ideas into a real design.
- 2:15SPEAKER_03: And last episode, we talked about where to spend your money and where you can save it.
- 2:20SPEAKER_03: Well, today we're talking about the conversation one step further because when you're remodeling your home, I want you to think about more than just what do I need today?
- 2:29SPEAKER_03: I want you to start asking, what am I going to need tomorrow?
- 2:32SPEAKER_03: Because families change, lifestyles change, homes change, and the smartest remodeling projects aren't just designed where you are today.
- 2:40SPEAKER_03: They're designed for where your life will may take you next.
- 2:43SPEAKER_03: Right?
- 2:44SPEAKER_03: We're talking about designing for the future.
- 2:47SPEAKER_05: Yes.
- 2:48SPEAKER_03: Because this is such an important topic, we're breaking it into two episodes.
- 2:51SPEAKER_03: Yes.
- 2:52SPEAKER_03: Two episodes, Caitlin.
- 2:53SPEAKER_03: Not just one, but two.
- 2:55SPEAKER_03: Could be ten.
- 2:58SPEAKER_03: Ten.
- 2:58SPEAKER_03: For those that know varsity blues.
- 3:00SPEAKER_03: Anyway, hey, today is part one.
- 3:02SPEAKER_03: You don't know varsity blues.
- 3:03SPEAKER_05: I said who would who does?
- 3:04SPEAKER_05: I wonder if Lydia would.
- 3:05SPEAKER_05: She probably doesn't.
- 3:06SPEAKER_05: Oh, I don't know.
- 3:06SPEAKER_05: She's one that does it.
- 3:07SPEAKER_03: I don't know.
- 3:07SPEAKER_03: So part one, how your home should grow with your life.
- 3:11SPEAKER_03: So let's get into it.
- 3:12SPEAKER_03: But I'm going to pay some bills, right?
- 3:14SPEAKER_03: So before we jump into today's big dog bite, it's time to pay those bills and give a shout out to one of our incredible 10x partners.
- 3:21SPEAKER_03: And today's episode is proudly supported by our friends at Elite Roofing Professionals.
- 3:25SPEAKER_03: When it comes to protecting your home, it all starts at the top.
- 3:28SPEAKER_03: Whether you need a roof repair, a complete roof replacement, maintenance, or help after a storm.
- 3:34SPEAKER_03: They're great about helping after a storm.
- 3:36SPEAKER_05: Yep, that's their thing, man.
- 3:37SPEAKER_03: The team at Elite Roofing Professionals is ready to help.
- 3:40SPEAKER_03: They understand that your roof isn't just another part of your house.
- 3:43SPEAKER_03: It's your first line of defense against everything Mother Nature throws at you.

- 4:18SPEAKER_05: I mean, you have to pause before that.
- 4:20SPEAKER_05: They deserve a pause.
- 4:21SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 4:21SPEAKER_03: Elite Roofing Professionals.com.
- 4:23SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 4:24SPEAKER_03: Hey, when quality counts, they're on top.
- 4:26SPEAKER_03: And we're proud to have Elite Roofing Professionals as our 10X partner of designing and building the Midwest one community at a time.
- 4:33SPEAKER_03: So now, Caitlin, let's get back to the big dog game plan.
- 4:36SPEAKER_03: Starting with a big dog bike.
- 4:38SPEAKER_03: That was not a dog.
- 4:39SPEAKER_03: I don't know what that was.
- 4:40SPEAKER_05: That was a wolf.
- 4:41SPEAKER_03: I don't know what that was.
- 4:42SPEAKER_03: Hey, your home shouldn't just fit your life today.
- 4:45SPEAKER_03: It should have room for the life you're building tomorrow.
- 4:48SPEAKER_03: Too many homeowners make decisions based on only what's happening right now.
- 4:53SPEAKER_03: But life changes, shit happens, families grow, kids get older, careers change, parents may need help, grandchildren come along, and one day the home that once felt perfect may no longer work the way it used to.
- 5:06SPEAKER_03: The smarter move, think ahead.
- 5:08SPEAKER_03: Because when your home can adapt, you have more options.
- 5:12SPEAKER_03: So let's jump into these segments we're going to talk about today, right?
- 5:16SPEAKER_03: Feet first.
- 5:17SPEAKER_03: Feet first, head first, toes first, tingle first, feet whatever we're going to jump into first, hammer first, it doesn't matter.
- 5:23SPEAKER_03: So let's start with something simple.
- 5:24SPEAKER_03: Your home may stay in the same place.
- 5:27SPEAKER_03: Boom, boom, foundation.
- 5:28SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 5:29SPEAKER_03: But your life inside that home constantly changing, right?
- 5:32SPEAKER_03: So think about it.
- 5:33SPEAKER_03: So maybe when you bought the house, it was just you and your spouse, right?
- 5:37SPEAKER_03: Then little pitter patter of feet running through the house came in, right?
- 5:40SPEAKER_05: Well, think of me.
- 5:43SPEAKER_05: That's what I'm saying.
- 5:43SPEAKER_05: You get like I I married into more kids.
- 5:46SPEAKER_03: Yeah, you have seven.
- 5:47SPEAKER_05: Well, two of them are in college, so they don't count.
- 5:49SPEAKER_05: But yeah, seven.
- 5:50SPEAKER_05: Seven.
- 5:51SPEAKER_05: But they're an eight with Chris.
- 5:52SPEAKER_03: I know.
- 5:52SPEAKER_03: We talked about that.
- 5:53SPEAKER_05: They don't count like as living in the home.
- 5:55SPEAKER_05: Oh, they don't count.
- 5:56SPEAKER_05: Okay.
- 5:56SPEAKER_05: So don't say that.
- 5:57SPEAKER_05: That'll be so simple.
- 5:58SPEAKER_03: College kids, you don't count.
- 5:59SPEAKER_05: But like they don't So your bonus mom says if they were to stay, though, if like what if they wanted to have to stay on the couch.
- 6:06SPEAKER_05: But that's what we're doing.
- 6:08SPEAKER_03: Christmas breaks.
- 6:08SPEAKER_05: Planning for the future.
- 6:10SPEAKER_05: Now I have to plan for something different for more people.
- 6:13SPEAKER_03: And suddenly that extra bedroom wasn't extra anymore, right?
- 6:16SPEAKER_03: No.
- 6:17SPEAKER_03: The small kitchen felt smaller or feel smaller.
- 6:20SPEAKER_03: Storage disappeared because now you're storing their shit.
- 6:22SPEAKER_03: And somehow everybody ended up gathering in the same room.
- 6:25SPEAKER_03: Fast forward another 10 years.
- 6:27SPEAKER_03: Now the kids are teenagers or college students, right?
- 6:30SPEAKER_03: They need privacy.
- 6:31SPEAKER_03: Mom, get out of here.
- 6:32SPEAKER_03: Oh yeah.
- 6:33SPEAKER_03: I'm exploring things.
- 6:34SPEAKER_05: Oh my God, no.
- 6:36SPEAKER_03: They need privacy.
- 6:37SPEAKER_03: They have friends over.
- 6:38SPEAKER_03: Maybe you need another bathroom, right?
- 6:40SPEAKER_03: Maybe you need more space to spread out.
- 6:42SPEAKER_03: Then one day the kids move out and suddenly you're like, hmm, completely different question, right?
- 6:46SPEAKER_05: Well, I don't ever want to think about it.
- 6:48SPEAKER_03: What do we do with all the but that's what we do?
- 6:50SPEAKER_05: I know.
- 6:50SPEAKER_05: That's so sad.
- 6:51SPEAKER_05: I'll start crying.
- 6:52SPEAKER_03: No, don't do that.
- 6:53SPEAKER_05: Do you offer therapy for that too?
- 6:54SPEAKER_05: Well at Big Dog?
- 6:55SPEAKER_03: No.
- 6:56SPEAKER_03: I'm not a therapist, but I only play one on TV, so it's okay.
- 6:59SPEAKER_03: It's all right.
- 7:00SPEAKER_03: Hey, you're asking yourself, what do we do with all that space?
- 7:03SPEAKER_03: Your home didn't necessarily change, but your needs did.
- 7:06SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 7:07SPEAKER_03: And that's why design isn't just about solving today's problem.
- 7:10SPEAKER_03: It's about thinking ahead.
- 7:12SPEAKER_03: And that's what we want to do here.
- 7:14SPEAKER_03: And and again, the the big dog game checklist is, you know, hey, are you thinking about not just today?
- 7:19SPEAKER_03: What about tomorrow?
- 7:20SPEAKER_03: What about 10 years, 20 years, 30 years, right?
- 7:23SPEAKER_03: And that's what we want to look at.
- 7:24SPEAKER_03: You know, design for the life you actually want.
- 7:27SPEAKER_03: And we can't predict the future.
- 7:28SPEAKER_03: We we can't.
- 7:29SPEAKER_03: If we would, you and I wouldn't be doing this right now, right?
- 7:31SPEAKER_05: No, no stradonics.
- 7:33SPEAKER_03: We'd be picking the lottery tickets, winning lottery tickets, and bang.
- 7:37SPEAKER_05: We'd be out in the ocean somewhere.
- 7:39SPEAKER_05: Are you not an ocean guy?
- 7:40SPEAKER_05: You're a mountain guy?
- 7:41SPEAKER_03: Nah, not much of an ocean guy.
- 7:43SPEAKER_05: That little Ooh, he don't like that.
- 7:45SPEAKER_03: I did the waterbed thing for many years, you know.
- 7:47SPEAKER_05: The waterbed.
- 7:48SPEAKER_03: I did the waterbed show on my age.
- 7:50SPEAKER_03: I was cool.
- 7:50SPEAKER_03: It was all right, but I controlled the motion in that ocean, right?
- 7:53SPEAKER_03: Hey.
- 7:54SPEAKER_03: But you put me on a big boat, I am not controlling it.
- 7:56SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 7:56SPEAKER_05: And then the middle of the ocean.
- 8:00SPEAKER_03: So what I found, I I don't know what and our listeners can tell me.
- 8:04SPEAKER_03: So it's kind of like when I'm playing PlayStation, right?
- 8:06SPEAKER_03: If I'm playing it and it's high action and I'm moving all over the place, I'm good.
- 8:10SPEAKER_03: I can play for hours, literally hours, no issues.
- 8:13SPEAKER_03: But if I'm watching someone play, I start getting motion sickness.
- 8:17SPEAKER_05: That's wild.
- 8:18SPEAKER_03: Because they are moving and I'm not.
- 8:20SPEAKER_03: Like if I'm riding in their vehicle on PlayStation or something, and they're moving me.
- 8:26SPEAKER_03: And I'm like, my brain just doesn't compute.
- 8:29SPEAKER_05: Chris, that's the same thing.
- 8:30SPEAKER_05: Because it's in the boat.
- 8:31SPEAKER_05: So the when I drive my van, I don't get sick.
- 8:34SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 8:34SPEAKER_03: But if you're riding, you do.
- 8:35SPEAKER_05: If I'm riding, I do.
- 8:36SPEAKER_03: Because your body's not controlling the motion of your body.
- 8:39SPEAKER_05: Yeah, because your wow.
- 8:40SPEAKER_03: That's why I can't do roller coasters anymore.
- 8:42SPEAKER_05: Ew.
- 8:42SPEAKER_05: I can never.
- 8:43SPEAKER_03: I could as a kid.
- 8:45SPEAKER_03: No big deal, man.
- 8:46SPEAKER_03: I'm on it.
- 8:46SPEAKER_03: Swing me around.
- 8:47SPEAKER_03: I'm good.
- 8:48SPEAKER_03: But now as I got older, I'm like, I'll throw up over everybody.
- 8:51SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 8:52SPEAKER_03: So here's a question I want every homeowner to ask themselves.
- 8:55SPEAKER_03: What do I want my life to look like in this home five years from now?
- 8:59SPEAKER_05: Five years.
- 9:00SPEAKER_05: I was wondering how far you'd go out.
- 9:01SPEAKER_03: Five years out because you think about my kids.
- 9:03SPEAKER_03: Okay, my kids are going to be in junior high.
- 9:05SPEAKER_03: My kids will be in high school, or they'll be in college.
- 9:08SPEAKER_03: You know, what's that look like when you're looking at a remodel, right?
- 9:12SPEAKER_03: Whether it's just a room, a kitchen, an addition, or whatever that is, right?
- 9:15SPEAKER_03: Now, you know, don't think about what Pinterest says, not what your neighbor is doing, what you know, not what's trendy this year.
- 9:23SPEAKER_03: What do you want?
- 9:25SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 9:25SPEAKER_03: Maybe you want and you know, to entertain more.
- 9:27SPEAKER_03: And again, like we talked about in several episodes in the past, that dream.
- 9:31SPEAKER_03: Just 10x thinking.
- 9:32SPEAKER_03: Just get out of your own self, your own way, and think five years out.
- 9:36SPEAKER_03: What's what does your life look like?
- 9:37SPEAKER_03: Some people can't do that.
- 9:38SPEAKER_03: They're in the now and they don't know how to get to the future, other than just waking up the next day and like, what's bringing to me today?
- 9:45SPEAKER_03: So easy.
- 9:46SPEAKER_05: I think it's hard to think about though, like the future as far as like a remodel.
- 9:49SPEAKER_05: Like, I'm always thinking about like my career, my kids, maybe a vacation.
- 9:54SPEAKER_05: But I guess I'm glad that you're bringing this up because this would help you not to make spur of the moment decisions that would cost a shitload of money.
- 10:01SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 10:01SPEAKER_03: I mean, unless you just got a shitload of money just laying around.
- 10:04SPEAKER_03: If you want to just yeah, I'm gonna remodel this year and next year if things change, I'll remodel again.
- 10:08SPEAKER_05: I I wish I could be like that.
- 10:09SPEAKER_05: Like that would be my dream.
- 10:10SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 10:11SPEAKER_03: And you can be 10x the crap out of it, which is.
- 10:13SPEAKER_03: I'm trying, man.
- 10:13SPEAKER_03: You're doing it.
- 10:14SPEAKER_03: You're doing it.
- 10:15SPEAKER_03: You know, and hey, maybe you want the entire family to gather at your house for the holidays.
- 10:19SPEAKER_03: Maybe you want space for grandchildren.
- 10:21SPEAKER_03: Maybe you want a home office.
- 10:22SPEAKER_03: Maybe you want a workshop.
- 10:24SPEAKER_03: Maybe you're a tinker.
- 10:26SPEAKER_03: Wanting to build things for those grandkids, right?
- 10:28SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 10:28SPEAKER_03: You know, maybe you want to stay in your home forever.
- 10:30SPEAKER_03: And that's what we ask clients when they're is this your forever home?
- 10:33SPEAKER_03: You know?
- 10:33SPEAKER_03: And they're like, well, I think so.
- 10:35SPEAKER_03: And again, if that, then great.
- 10:36SPEAKER_03: Then you're planning for in the future, five or ten or two.
- 10:39SPEAKER_03: Depending on how old you are, right?
- 10:41SPEAKER_03: And just maybe you want to simplify.
- 10:42SPEAKER_03: Just the answers matter because your lifestyle should drive your design.
- 10:47SPEAKER_03: You know, let me say that again.
- 10:49SPEAKER_03: Your lifestyle should drive your design, not your neighbors, not the trend, what's trendy, nothing like that.
- 10:56SPEAKER_03: Your lifestyle, right?
- 10:57SPEAKER_03: And so keeping that in mind, and it's okay to be trendy, but like we talk with Tamara Day, it's like what fits for you.
- 11:03SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 11:03SPEAKER_05: I mean, if you like a trend and and you, you know, it it makes you happy, don't tolerate, man.
- 11:08SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 11:09SPEAKER_03: If trend is your lifestyle, then that lifestyle is driving your design.
- 11:14SPEAKER_05: Correct.
- 11:14SPEAKER_05: But just make sure it's functional to your and longevity and all of that.
- 11:19SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 11:19SPEAKER_03: So think about your family's next chapter.
- 11:21SPEAKER_03: We touched on this just a little bit.
- 11:23SPEAKER_03: One of the biggest mistakes homeowners make is designing their home based only on today's circumstances.
- 11:28SPEAKER_03: Let's say you have young children, you might be thinking about more bedrooms, more storage, you know, a larger family room, a better kitchen.
- 11:36SPEAKER_03: Uh, but what happens when those children become teenagers?
- 11:39SPEAKER_03: Are their bedroom sizes still right?
- 11:40SPEAKER_03: Will that open family room still work?
- 11:43SPEAKER_03: Or or you wish that you had a separate room where the teenager kids and friends could go turn on the PlayStation.
- 11:50SPEAKER_05: That's what I want.
- 11:51SPEAKER_03: Goof around and and you're like, soundproof that wall and door.
- 11:54SPEAKER_03: I don't want to hear them.
- 11:55SPEAKER_05: Or uh that could be a case where you finish your basement if it's not already finished.
- 11:59SPEAKER_03: Exactly.
- 12:00SPEAKER_03: Exactly.
- 12:00SPEAKER_03: You know, do you need another hangout area?
- 12:03SPEAKER_03: And and yeah, finish out that lower level of the home or the basement or you know, whatever that is.
- 12:08SPEAKER_03: Storage part.
- 12:08SPEAKER_03: Do you need a homework study area?
- 12:10SPEAKER_05: Or office, or quiet area.
- 12:12SPEAKER_03: Let's think even further ahead what happens when those kids move out.
- 12:15SPEAKER_03: So could that bedroom become an office, a workout room, a guest room, a hobby space?
- 12:21SPEAKER_03: That's what future focused design.
- 12:24SPEAKER_03: So let that coin phrase be there.
- 12:26SPEAKER_03: Future focused design.
- 12:27SPEAKER_05: I like that.
- 12:28SPEAKER_03: Is all about.
- 12:29SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 12:29SPEAKER_03: Creating spaces that can evolve into your lifestyle changes as you my mom is so good at doing this.
- 12:36SPEAKER_05: Like I have watched her do this with her house since I was 15 years old.
- 12:40SPEAKER_03: Kathy B.
- 12:41SPEAKER_05: I mean, she just so she turned my sister's room, because our two rooms were like a Jack and Jill bathroom or whatever.
- 12:49SPEAKER_05: So this one my room is the beautiful guest room.
- 12:52SPEAKER_05: My sister's room is my mom's true makeup room and walk-in closet.
- 12:56SPEAKER_05: Like nice beautiful vanity, has like a what are those things?
- 12:59SPEAKER_05: Like an ottoman in the middle.
- 13:00SPEAKER_05: Sure.
- 13:01SPEAKER_05: Just has all her stuff.
- 13:02SPEAKER_05: But I thought, you know, a fruit fruit room.
- 13:04SPEAKER_05: Yes, of course.
- 13:05SPEAKER_05: That's a good idea to then she doesn't have to be like, and then my dad has his own bathroom.
- 13:09SPEAKER_03: Right, exactly.
- 13:10SPEAKER_03: So it works out for him.
- 13:11SPEAKER_03: And for people to understand a Jack and Jill bathroom.
- 13:13SPEAKER_05: Oh yeah, sorry.
- 13:14SPEAKER_03: Yeah, so Jack and Jill, it means you have a bedroom and two bedrooms that are connected by a joint bathroom.
- 13:19SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 13:20SPEAKER_05: Which is a big thing.
- 13:20SPEAKER_03: That's a Jack and Jill.
- 13:21SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 13:22SPEAKER_05: Um sinks.
- 13:22SPEAKER_03: They don't go up a hill.
- 13:23SPEAKER_03: They just have one of the things.
- 13:28SPEAKER_05: I would have never thought to convert that to the makeup room.
- 13:30SPEAKER_05: That's what I'm saying.
- 13:31SPEAKER_05: So that's the kind of stuff you guys can help.
- 13:33SPEAKER_05: Exactly.
- 13:33SPEAKER_05: Because some people won't are like, well, I don't this is only a bedroom.
- 13:37SPEAKER_03: And those are the questions we're asking.
- 13:38SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 13:38SPEAKER_03: You know, if we see, you know, we again, we've talked about this.
- 13:41SPEAKER_03: We interview potential clients just like they're interviewing us as a professional.
- 13:45SPEAKER_03: We're interviewing, looking around at pictures, family pictures, saying, Oh, teenage kids.
- 13:50SPEAKER_03: Oh, yeah, they have college plans.
- 13:51SPEAKER_03: Oh, awesome.
- 13:52SPEAKER_03: What's the plans with a room when they're gone?
- 13:53SPEAKER_03: Didn't think about that.
- 13:55SPEAKER_03: You know, so, or they're talking about a big addition.
- 13:58SPEAKER_03: Well, great.
- 13:58SPEAKER_03: Are your kids five and under?
- 14:00SPEAKER_03: Awesome.
- 14:00SPEAKER_03: You're gonna get what you need out of this edition.
- 14:02SPEAKER_05: Right.
- 14:03SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 14:03SPEAKER_03: But if they're 16 and 18, you know.
- 14:07SPEAKER_05: Or you'd be like my parents.
- 14:08SPEAKER_05: They built on a a sunroom.
- 14:09SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 14:10SPEAKER_05: You might want to do that.
- 14:11SPEAKER_03: Yeah, exactly.
- 14:12SPEAKER_05: If they're older, if the kids are older.
- 14:13SPEAKER_05: Boy, they're out there all the time.
- 14:15SPEAKER_05: So they got their money out of that.
- 14:16SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 14:16SPEAKER_03: So flexible spaces are the future, dual purpose.
- 14:19SPEAKER_03: And no one has to know that except you, the homeowner.
- 14:21SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 14:21SPEAKER_03: What the flexible spaces are the future.
- 14:23SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 14:24SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 14:24SPEAKER_03: So one of the things.
- 14:25SPEAKER_05: Can be flexible.
- 14:26SPEAKER_03: Exactly.
- 14:27SPEAKER_03: And be in future focused designs.
- 14:29SPEAKER_05: Okay.
- 14:30SPEAKER_05: I'm vibing off this today.
- 14:32SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 14:32SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 14:33SPEAKER_03: We're we are becoming mind readers and fortune tellers and being able to look into the future with people by asking the proper questions.
- 14:41SPEAKER_05: Right.
- 14:41SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 14:42SPEAKER_03: It's all about so the quality of the answer is based on the quality of the question.
- 14:48SPEAKER_03: And so that's why we always want to make sure we ask quality questions to get quality answers out of that.
- 14:53SPEAKER_05: You got to ask those deeper questions, yeah.
- 14:55SPEAKER_05: Just those surface levels.
- 14:56SPEAKER_03: Yeah, exactly.
- 14:57SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 14:58SPEAKER_03: So one of the smartest things homeowners can do today is create spaces that have more than one purpose.
- 15:04SPEAKER_03: Think about a room that can serve as a guest room and an office, right?
- 15:08SPEAKER_03: Maybe you have a day bed in there that looks more like a sitting couch, but when guests are over, it becomes a sleeping room for them, a guest room.
- 15:15SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 15:16SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 15:16SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 15:16SPEAKER_03: You know, a workout room and a hobby room, right?
- 15:19SPEAKER_03: You know, a a basement, entertainment area, and a place for the grandchildren.
- 15:23SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 15:24SPEAKER_03: Right?
- 15:24SPEAKER_03: Or a dining room and a workspace.
- 15:27SPEAKER_03: So Tamra's done some beautiful creative things like that too.
- 15:30SPEAKER_05: Tamra's workspace.
- 15:32SPEAKER_05: And then with her all her glasses.
- 15:34SPEAKER_03: Oh, it's beautiful.
- 15:34SPEAKER_03: Yes.
- 15:35SPEAKER_03: So the more flexible your home is, the longer you it can serve you, right?
- 15:39SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 15:39SPEAKER_03: And here's a beautiful thing about that.
- 15:41SPEAKER_03: You don't always need to add more square footage, which can cost a lot of money.
- 15:45SPEAKER_03: Sometimes you just need to use the square footage you already have differently, right?
- 15:50SPEAKER_03: Just think about that dual purpose, that flexible use.
- 15:53SPEAKER_03: And that's where design process becomes incredibly valuable.
- 15:56SPEAKER_03: Again, the big dog remodeling game, game plan checklist there, right?
- 16:01SPEAKER_03: We go through that.
- 16:02SPEAKER_03: We're looking at your existing space and asking, how can we make this work harder for you?
- 16:07SPEAKER_03: And let's be smarter about that space working harder for you.
- 16:11SPEAKER_03: You've already paid for it.
- 16:12SPEAKER_05: Right.
- 16:12SPEAKER_03: Let's make it work.
- 16:13SPEAKER_05: Get out of it what you paid for it.
- 16:15SPEAKER_03: Exactly.
- 16:16SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 16:16SPEAKER_03: And so again, designing that home to stay in it longer for you.
- 16:20SPEAKER_03: Let's talk about something I think more homeowners should be considering, and it's aging in place.
- 16:25SPEAKER_03: We don't like to talk about it.
- 16:27SPEAKER_03: No one wants to get old, and I know you don't.
- 16:29SPEAKER_05: I don't.
- 16:30SPEAKER_05: I I couldn't even bend.
- 16:31SPEAKER_05: I told the people the gym.
- 16:33SPEAKER_05: Like I could not go past this, Chris, and I don't even know what I did to my side.
- 16:38SPEAKER_03: Old age.
- 16:38SPEAKER_03: Oh, okay.
- 16:39SPEAKER_05: So we're getting back to it is.
- 16:40SPEAKER_05: That's what I'm saying.
- 16:41SPEAKER_05: I am getting old.
- 16:42SPEAKER_05: I'm aging out.
- 16:43SPEAKER_03: You're not aging out.
- 16:44SPEAKER_03: Aging out's when you're like, peace out.
- 16:46SPEAKER_03: I'm gone.
- 16:47SPEAKER_03: Sammy Sosa.
- 16:48SPEAKER_03: I actually had I had two golf teams in the scramble we were we were presented yesterday.
- 16:53SPEAKER_03: And uh one of my players, she's pretty big up in Springfield, and she was pulling away from the holes that we were one of the whole eight or nine.
- 17:00SPEAKER_03: I don't know what she was at.
- 17:01SPEAKER_03: But anyway, she's like, Love you bunches.
- 17:03SPEAKER_03: Give me the two finger, love you bunches, and peace out.
- 17:06SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 17:07SPEAKER_03: Like, isn't that nice?
- 17:08SPEAKER_03: So, but yeah, aging in place.
- 17:10SPEAKER_03: And I do want to say that we can talk to anyone about aging in place because I'm actually a certified aging in place specialist.
- 17:17SPEAKER_03: Oh caps C A P S is that designation.
- 17:20SPEAKER_03: Oh, okay.
- 17:20SPEAKER_03: And that's through the National Association of Home Builders.
- 17:23SPEAKER_03: I've had to take training and testing to be a certified aging in place specialist.
- 17:27SPEAKER_03: So this is very near and dear to my heart.
- 17:29SPEAKER_05: That's a I had no clue this even existed.
- 17:32SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 17:32SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 17:33SPEAKER_05: I'm so glad you're talking about that.
- 17:35SPEAKER_03: We are actually working with one of our suppliers exclusively to be able to offer um an aging-in-place bathroom.
- 17:42SPEAKER_05: Okay.
- 17:43SPEAKER_03: So that it becomes more conducive as we age.
- 17:46SPEAKER_05: I see what you mean.
- 17:47SPEAKER_03: Wider entryways, more open spaces, clear clear, right, clear spaces, blocking in those walls for those grab bars that we need in the future when we just need to steady ourselves, right?
- 17:57SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 17:57SPEAKER_03: Or you're not able to bend over to the side like you know.
- 18:00SPEAKER_03: Maybe you're not able to get up off the shower bench as easy and you need to like just what if you drop something on the shower.
- 18:05SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 18:05SPEAKER_03: Yep.
- 18:06SPEAKER_03: Kick it to the corner and no, that's the prison.
- 18:08SPEAKER_03: Never mind.
- 18:09SPEAKER_03: No, I've not been in prison.
- 18:10SPEAKER_03: No, but we dropped the soap on the show.
- 18:11SPEAKER_05: I already know this because Chris and I do.
- 18:13SPEAKER_03: Oh, ask Chris this question.
- 18:14SPEAKER_03: We're getting off aging place, but ask Chris this question.
- 18:17SPEAKER_03: Have they switched to powdered soap in the showers at prison?
- 18:20SPEAKER_05: I am gonna ask him.
- 18:21SPEAKER_05: I've never, but we are.
- 18:22SPEAKER_03: You know why?
- 18:23SPEAKER_05: Because whenever you drop it, they can't.
- 18:25SPEAKER_03: It takes longer to pick up.
- 18:28SPEAKER_03: Okay, now Caitlin got the joke.
- 18:30SPEAKER_03: All right.
- 18:31SPEAKER_03: If those that don't get the joke, they can DM me and I'll give you the answer to that.
- 18:35SPEAKER_03: Anyway, so let's get back to aging the place.
- 18:39SPEAKER_03: Yeah, all right.
- 18:40SPEAKER_03: Well, hey, so listen to this, right?
- 18:42SPEAKER_03: This isn't just something you think about when you're 70 years old.
- 18:46SPEAKER_03: The best time to plan for accessibility is when you're already remodeling.
- 18:50SPEAKER_03: Because if you're remodeling a bathroom today, why not think about that future?
- 18:54SPEAKER_03: Maybe that means a curbless shower, wider doorways, better lighting, comfort height fixtures, elongated raised toilet bowls, so your little knees don't have to push you up as much.
- 19:07SPEAKER_05: Just things I don't think about.
- 19:08SPEAKER_03: And and again, we think about that blocking in the wall for future grab bars.
- 19:13SPEAKER_03: Not just in the shower, but by the toilets as well.
- 19:15SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 19:16SPEAKER_03: Let's put it in there, right?
- 19:17SPEAKER_03: Slip resistant flooring.
- 19:18SPEAKER_03: Some people like, I want beautiful, mosaic, glossy floor tile.
- 19:23SPEAKER_03: As soon as your feet are wet, you're down.
- 19:26SPEAKER_03: Flat on your ass.
- 19:26SPEAKER_05: Oh my god.
- 19:27SPEAKER_05: I broke a hip and I can't get in hitting a little button.
- 19:30SPEAKER_03: Oh, wait, you're not old enough to wear a button yet.
- 19:32SPEAKER_05: Wait, wait, yeah.
- 19:33SPEAKER_05: Is it life alert?
- 19:34SPEAKER_03: Life alert.
- 19:34SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 19:35SPEAKER_05: I've fallen and I can't get up.
- 19:36SPEAKER_03: Help.
- 19:37SPEAKER_03: I have fallen and I can't get up.
- 19:40SPEAKER_03: So maybe you're remodeling your main floor.
- 19:42SPEAKER_03: You could create a bedroom that would work for your life later instead of on the second floor.
- 19:46SPEAKER_03: Plan for a bedroom on the first floor.
- 19:48SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 19:48SPEAKER_03: Laundry on the first floor.
- 19:49SPEAKER_03: All accommodations of living on the first floor.
- 19:52SPEAKER_03: Could you eliminate unnecessary steps?
- 19:54SPEAKER_03: Could you improve access to the home?
- 19:56SPEAKER_03: We have designed and built the zero-step entry homes.
- 19:59SPEAKER_03: How many homes have you been into that you know of?
- 20:01SPEAKER_03: Like if you're going from a garage, you always have a step to go from that garage into the home.
- 20:05SPEAKER_05: Most homes have porches.
- 20:07SPEAKER_03: Front doors, you're walking up steps to go into the house.
- 20:10SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 20:10SPEAKER_05: I mean, realistically.
- 20:11SPEAKER_03: Because the homes are built up out of the ground, right?
- 20:13SPEAKER_03: For water management.
- 20:14SPEAKER_03: So now think about that.
- 20:15SPEAKER_03: If they're built out of the ground, that's why we have steps.
- 20:18SPEAKER_03: We have built homes that have zero lip entry.
- 20:21SPEAKER_03: Literally garages that we will pour flush with the wood subfloor of the home.
- 20:25SPEAKER_03: We have proper things to present that from rotting and stuff.
- 20:28SPEAKER_03: So you literally are walking straight from the garage into the home.
- 20:30SPEAKER_05: Yeah, because I was thinking I have seen the zero entry like in Florida, but then I was thinking, no, the garage, there's still a little step going into the home.
- 20:39SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 20:40SPEAKER_03: She's holding her fingers like this, but you mean it's a step.
- 20:43SPEAKER_05: Oh, yeah.
- 20:43SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 20:44SPEAKER_03: A step.
- 20:44SPEAKER_05: Yeah, it's it's one step, you know what I mean?
- 20:46SPEAKER_03: But but that's six inches.
- 20:48SPEAKER_05: Well, sometimes those can really get you those six inch steps.
- 20:52SPEAKER_05: Get my dog all the time.
- 20:53SPEAKER_05: He runs too fast.
- 20:55SPEAKER_03: That's what she said.
- 20:56SPEAKER_03: All right.
- 20:56SPEAKER_03: So anyway, the point isn't you have to make your house look like a medical facility.
- 21:01SPEAKER_03: That's not the point.
- 21:02SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 21:03SPEAKER_03: That's not what we're talking about at all.
- 21:04SPEAKER_03: We're talking about smart design, design that gives you options, design that allows you to stay comfortable in your home longer.
- 21:11SPEAKER_03: And sometimes those decisions cost very little during a remodel, but they can cost significantly more if you have to go back and do them later, a separate remodel.
- 21:21SPEAKER_03: So that's why having a certified agent of play specialist on your team and on your side.
- 21:26SPEAKER_03: And the good thing is too, I'm a certified agent of play specialist, and my team and my designers understand that same philosophy because I've taught them.
- 21:35SPEAKER_03: They they learn the same things.
- 21:36SPEAKER_03: So we can design a home for you.
- 21:39SPEAKER_05: I love that because that is you you do need to be trained.
- 21:42SPEAKER_05: You can't just come in there.
- 21:43SPEAKER_05: I mean, these people have some people do have medical.
- 21:46SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 21:46SPEAKER_03: Well, you mean you never you may never know that, you know, heck, I had a hip replacement already.
- 21:51SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 21:51SPEAKER_03: You know what I mean?
- 21:52SPEAKER_05: I had C sections.
- 21:53SPEAKER_03: Instead of instead of a walker, instead of a walker, which they recommend you use, I used crutches.
- 21:58SPEAKER_03: But even crutches.
- 22:00SPEAKER_03: You have to either go sideways through a door if it's not wide enough or have a wide enough door to go through.
- 22:04SPEAKER_03: You know, I didn't plan while I was in the home now that hey, I may have to have a walker one day in the crutches.
- 22:09SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 22:09SPEAKER_03: So, but the odds of me having a walker in the next thirty years is higher than it would have been before.
- 22:16SPEAKER_05: And I want to point out too, it's not like when you're coming in and doing the the age updates.
- 22:21SPEAKER_05: Right.
- 22:21SPEAKER_05: Like they don't have to like you said, they're not gonna be ugly, especially like coming from you guys.
- 22:26SPEAKER_05: Yeah, uh there's other options, guys, to where you're you're it's not like you're in the emergency room, like a cold bar, you know.
- 22:33SPEAKER_05: Yeah, no.
- 22:33SPEAKER_03: You're gonna we literally took we took, we won't mention the client's name, we took someone's master suite, right?
- 22:40SPEAKER_03: The primary suite.
- 22:41SPEAKER_03: They had a beautiful large bathroom off of their master bedroom, and unfortunately, the the gentleman, the husband, was diagnosed where you know he was in a wheelchair permanently.
- 22:52SPEAKER_03: And with that he lost mobility and we adapted.
- 22:56SPEAKER_03: Beautiful shower we did, had zero lip entry shower.
- 22:59SPEAKER_03: That's where we recessed the shower base into the floor.
- 23:02SPEAKER_03: We cut out, lowered the joist, everything, lowered that.
- 23:05SPEAKER_03: So literally the chair, uh, it was a Hoyer lift that they had to use um to be able to lift and roll into the shower.
- 23:12SPEAKER_03: And so we modified in a beautiful bathroom.
- 23:15SPEAKER_03: Beautiful.
- 23:15SPEAKER_05: Think of how you changed his life.
- 23:17SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 23:18SPEAKER_03: And we made it where he can see beautiful.
- 23:20SPEAKER_03: Yes.
- 23:21SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and the and the toilet area and all of that.
- 23:23SPEAKER_03: A smart toilet was put in and just yeah, and it helped the spouse as well.
- 23:27SPEAKER_05: Right.
- 23:28SPEAKER_05: Then she wouldn't she's not having to get and help and all that.
- 23:31SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 23:31SPEAKER_03: Yep.
- 23:32SPEAKER_03: Mm-hmm.
- 23:32SPEAKER_03: Good point.
- 23:33SPEAKER_03: Good point.
- 23:33SPEAKER_03: Yep.
- 23:34SPEAKER_03: You know, rest in peace.
- 23:35SPEAKER_03: He's passed, but now she still has a beautiful bathroom that is still functional.
- 23:39SPEAKER_05: And it doesn't look like a medical.
- 23:42SPEAKER_05: Yeah, yeah.
- 23:42SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 23:43SPEAKER_03: So let's roll into This is a good story.
- 23:44SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 23:45SPEAKER_03: Let's roll into the big dog rapid fire, closing up this session, part one today, right?
- 23:49SPEAKER_03: So before you start your next remote project, we always ask these rapid fire questions, right?
- 23:54SPEAKER_03: Where do I see myself in five years?
- 23:56SPEAKER_03: Where do I see myself in 10 years?
- 23:58SPEAKER_03: Will my family's needs change?
- 24:00SPEAKER_03: Could this space serve more than one purpose?
- 24:02SPEAKER_03: Am I designing for the lifestyle I actually want?
- 24:06SPEAKER_03: Could my home grow and change with me?
- 24:09SPEAKER_03: Is there a way to use my existing space better?
- 24:12SPEAKER_03: Am I thinking about accessibility?
- 24:14SPEAKER_03: So the big dog challenge based on those questions is sit down with your spouse, your family, or anyone else who lives in your home and ask one simple question.
- 24:24SPEAKER_03: What will we need from this home five years from now?
- 24:26SPEAKER_05: I can't wait to ask Chris.
- 24:28SPEAKER_03: Then ask, what about 10 years from now?
- 24:30SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 24:31SPEAKER_03: And that your yours will change huge in five and in ten.
- 24:35SPEAKER_03: Because of all the amount of kids that would be gone, right?
- 24:39SPEAKER_05: Because, well, in 10 years.
- 24:41SPEAKER_03: And you're gonna ask your kids too.
- 24:42SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 24:43SPEAKER_03: You're sitting everyone in the home down.
- 24:45SPEAKER_05: Oh, I love that.
- 24:46SPEAKER_03: Again, it's let me repeat that.
- 24:48SPEAKER_03: Sit down with your spouse, your family, or anyone else who lives in your home.
- 24:52SPEAKER_03: That's everyone.
- 24:53SPEAKER_03: Make it a family gathering.
- 24:54SPEAKER_03: Get the dog carrying.
- 24:55SPEAKER_03: Ask those questions.
- 24:56SPEAKER_03: Get the dog carol.
- 24:57SPEAKER_05: What would you like from this home?
- 24:58SPEAKER_05: To chew up everything.
- 25:00SPEAKER_03: Exactly.
- 25:00SPEAKER_03: So write down write down everyone's answers.
- 25:03SPEAKER_03: You might be surprised.
- 25:04SPEAKER_03: Maybe one person needs an office.
- 25:06SPEAKER_03: Maybe someone wants a better entertainment space.
- 25:09SPEAKER_03: Maybe you need more storage.
- 25:10SPEAKER_03: Maybe somebody is already thinking about staying in the home long term.
- 25:13SPEAKER_03: Maybe that's Chris.
- 25:14SPEAKER_03: Maybe it's you.
- 25:15SPEAKER_03: Maybe it's your dog.
- 25:16SPEAKER_03: Maybe, maybe Kathy B is like KD B, I'm moving in with you.
- 25:20SPEAKER_05: No, I want to move in with her.
- 25:22SPEAKER_05: I keep trying to ask my parents.
- 25:24SPEAKER_03: So just remember though, the goal isn't to solve everything in one day, one setting.
- 25:28SPEAKER_03: The goal is to start thinking differently.
- 25:30SPEAKER_03: Because the more clearly you can see the future, the better you can plan your home.
- 25:35SPEAKER_03: Just like in 10X, we talk about, right?
- 25:37SPEAKER_03: The very first thing on the system wheel is number one is targets.
- 25:40SPEAKER_03: You got to know what your targets are before you can start putting an action plan into play to achieve those targets, right?
- 25:47SPEAKER_03: So final thought.
- 25:48SPEAKER_03: Here's what I want you to remember from today's episode.
- 25:50SPEAKER_03: Your home is more than a space you live in today.
- 25:53SPEAKER_03: It's a space where your life is going to happen tomorrow.
- 25:56SPEAKER_03: A great design doesn't just solve today's problem, it gives you the flexibility to handle what's coming next.
- 26:02SPEAKER_03: Think ahead, think bigger, and don't design your home based only on where you are today.
- 26:07SPEAKER_03: Design it based on where you're going.
- 26:09SPEAKER_03: But if you don't know where you're going, you can't design where you're what you need.
- 26:13SPEAKER_03: So again, starting with the targets, the future.
- 26:16SPEAKER_03: What does that look like, right?
- 26:17SPEAKER_03: So if you're thinking about remodeling your home, just bring us pictures of what you want.
- 26:22SPEAKER_03: Bring us your vision for the future.
