- 0:01Speaker 1: Is anybody else just really tired. It's like, I feel
- 0:05Speaker 1: like August is supposed to be this month where we're
- 0:07Speaker 1: all kicking back and relaxing and barbecuing, and yeah, I'm
- 0:11Speaker 1: doing some of that stuff, but I'm also just maybe
- 0:14Speaker 1: in the thick of this marathon training and feeling a
- 0:16Speaker 1: little beat up. Emily Badi here, What's shaken? Guys? Another
- 0:21Speaker 1: hurdle moment from Hurdle Right Now, a podcast that talks
- 0:25Speaker 1: to everyone from entrepreneurs to top CEOs and athletes about
- 0:29Speaker 1: how they've gotten through tough times, hurdles and sorts by
- 0:32Speaker 1: leaning into wellness. This week, I'm talking all about injury,
- 0:37Speaker 1: how it can mess with your mind, how it can
- 0:39Speaker 1: deter your progress, how it can make you feel, and
- 0:42Speaker 1: what you can do to get through some of the tough,
- 0:45Speaker 1: unexpected stuff and come out pretty good on the other side.
- 0:49Speaker 1: Before I get into that, hurdlers, this week's sponsor my
- 0:52Speaker 1: partner will it Goo. Way of Life Athletics is a

- 1:34Speaker 1: gave you anything. Now, let's talk about injury, all right.
- 1:37Speaker 1: I've had my fair share of them. I know how
- 1:39Speaker 1: it feels to feel absolutely helpless to go into doctors'
- 1:43Speaker 1: offices to not know what's going to happen next. And
- 1:45Speaker 1: today I'm talking through how I got through some of
- 1:48Speaker 1: my most difficult setbacks, what you can do to get
- 1:51Speaker 1: through some of your own, and how we deal with
- 1:54Speaker 1: all of the inner turmoil that goes on when you
- 1:57Speaker 1: feel like you're just not being able to be your best.
- 2:00Speaker 1: It's tough stuff, I know it. If you've been injured,
- 2:03Speaker 1: if you want to talk about anything, you know how
- 2:05Speaker 1: to find me. It's at Emily Body and over at
- 2:07Speaker 1: Hurdle podcast also always available for you over on email
- 2:12Speaker 1: Emily at hurdle dot us. I have to say I
- 2:14Speaker 1: appreciate you guys so much. There's been a lot of
- 2:17Speaker 1: things flying, dms and emails and all of the sorts.
- 2:20Speaker 1: I am trying to get back to them as best
- 2:23Speaker 1: as I can. If I've missed you, shoot me another note,
- 2:25Speaker 1: No offense taken. I'm here for you again. Two way
- 2:28Speaker 1: conversation makes me better every single day. And that's all.
- 2:34Speaker 1: With that, Let's get to hurdling. Ho injury. It's tough, right.
- 2:49Speaker 1: I know a lot of you have messaged me about
- 2:51Speaker 1: this and have expressed this feeling that when you're injured
- 2:54Speaker 1: and you feel like you can't perform, it feels like
- 2:57Speaker 1: a part of you just isn't functioning. I can totally relate.
- 3:01Speaker 1: My first serious injury was when I had a neuroma
- 3:04Speaker 1: act up in my left foot. And if you've never
- 3:06Speaker 1: heard of the word neuroma before, it's basically a fancy
- 3:10Speaker 1: word for an inflamed nerve. It's really sexy, I know.
- 3:13Speaker 1: And when that happened, it was so painful when I
- 3:16Speaker 1: would run and walk that I had to give it
- 3:19Speaker 1: a break. I also went to go see a podiatrist
- 3:23Speaker 1: who ended up giving me injections, and after about two
- 3:27Speaker 1: to three months time, I could finally get back to
- 3:31Speaker 1: my normal level activity. Now this was way back before
- 3:33Speaker 1: I'd even done a full marathon. I would argue that
- 3:36Speaker 1: maybe I wasn't as even into running as I am now,
- 3:40Speaker 1: but still it was a major setback and it really
- 3:42Speaker 1: messed with me, but it set me up to better
- 3:45Speaker 1: handle injuries that would come later on in my running
- 3:48Speaker 1: career of sorts. So let's talk about smart strategies to
- 3:54Speaker 1: implement when you're on the injured list, all right, Tip
- 3:57Speaker 1: number one, Find an alternate activity to what you love
- 4:01Speaker 1: to do that gives you some sort of joy and
- 4:04Speaker 1: is okay by the way of your doctor. And what
- 4:06Speaker 1: I mean by that is, obviously, if you like CrossFit,
- 4:09Speaker 1: or you like spinning, or if you're a runner, those
- 4:12Speaker 1: are the things that bring you the most happiness. But
- 4:15Speaker 1: with that said, that doesn't mean that there aren't going
- 4:18Speaker 1: to be other ways for you to sweat that can
- 4:20Speaker 1: at least make you feel satisfied. Obviously, this depends on
- 4:24Speaker 1: the severity of your injury. But for me, when I
- 4:27Speaker 1: was sidelined from running, I leaned into the indoor spin bike,
- 4:32Speaker 1: and not just like, Oh, I'm gonna go take a
- 4:33Speaker 1: spin class, not like I had to do the full
- 4:36Speaker 1: on sitting and reclining spin bike. I felt slightly like
- 4:40Speaker 1: a senior citizen and it was frustrating. It was really frustrating.
- 4:44Speaker 1: But the thing about that was that it was a
- 4:46Speaker 1: big lesson in patience for me, right as I'm sure
- 4:48Speaker 1: a lot of you can relate to by getting on
- 4:51Speaker 1: the spin bike. It definitely wasn't the same cadence, the
- 4:53Speaker 1: same energy as running, but at least I knew that
- 4:56Speaker 1: I was doing something that was good for my body.
- 4:58Speaker 1: I was sweating, I was moving, and that was a
- 5:01Speaker 1: whole lot better than the other alternative, which was to
- 5:03Speaker 1: sit around and get frustrated and angry. So tip number one,
- 5:08Speaker 1: find a way to sweat. Find some way to help
- 5:10Speaker 1: keep you sane. Injury tip number two. I know I've
- 5:14Speaker 1: mentioned this a little bit already, but definitely, if something
- 5:17Speaker 1: feels like it's wrong, go seek out a professional opinion.
- 5:21Speaker 1: There have been times in my past where I felt
- 5:23Speaker 1: as though something was wrong, and instead of getting the
- 5:26Speaker 1: help that I needed, I was afraid to go talk
- 5:28Speaker 1: to someone because I didn't want to hear the things
- 5:30Speaker 1: I didn't want to hear. Lesson learned when you do that,
- 5:35Speaker 1: things can get worse. So instead of hiding from an expert,
- 5:40Speaker 1: go seek out an opinion, because what that can do
- 5:42Speaker 1: is prevent anything further from happening down the line, anything worse.
- 5:47Speaker 1: The last thing you want is to ignore a small
- 5:49Speaker 1: pain which turns into a big pain, which turns into
- 5:52Speaker 1: you being sidelined for months or maybe even longer, just
- 5:57Speaker 1: because you were scared of facing the truth. Tip number
- 6:00Speaker 1: three when it comes to dealing with injury, write about
- 6:03Speaker 1: how you feel. I'm a big fan of putting words
- 6:07Speaker 1: to paper, and maybe if you're not an actual write
- 6:10Speaker 1: things down person, even though I think you should be,
- 6:12Speaker 1: you tap it into your phone. Whatever works for you.
- 6:15Speaker 1: That's fine. But the most important thing about this experience
- 6:19Speaker 1: is that, as with any setbacks in life, it's an
- 6:21Speaker 1: opportunity for you to learn. It's an opportunity for you
- 6:25Speaker 1: to grow and understand what's going on and then maybe
- 6:28Speaker 1: do some self work to help prevent it the next time.
- 6:31Speaker 1: So put pen to paper and understand how you feel,
- 6:35Speaker 1: what's going on in your head. If you're frustrated, Let
- 6:38Speaker 1: it out. If you're sad, let it out. You need
- 6:40Speaker 1: an outlet for that energy rather than keeping it all
- 6:43Speaker 1: bottled up inside, because what that will do will just
- 6:46Speaker 1: be like the match to a haystack. And that's the
- 6:48Speaker 1: last thing you want is to get more upset over
- 6:50Speaker 1: something that you don't have all of the control over.
- 6:53Speaker 1: The next strategy I have for dealing with injury is
- 6:57Speaker 1: actually doing what you're told. Here's the thing you like
- 7:00Speaker 1: to move, I get it, but you need to make sure,
- 7:04Speaker 1: like I said, that activity you're finding as a replacement
- 7:06Speaker 1: the physical therapy suggestions that you might be getting if
- 7:09Speaker 1: you're going to see a physical therapist, that you're doing
- 7:12Speaker 1: your homework, that you're doing what you're supposed to do,
- 7:14Speaker 1: because if you're not, or if you're overdoing it, that's
- 7:18Speaker 1: only going to really again hurt you in the long run.
- 7:21Speaker 1: It's hard when you're injured to keep your eye on
- 7:23Speaker 1: the long term, right. It's like you miss the high
- 7:26Speaker 1: you get from the exercise type that you crave, and
- 7:29Speaker 1: while you might be able to find that for just
- 7:32Speaker 1: a second by pushing the envelope, the repercussions from that
- 7:36Speaker 1: are way too risky. You need to listen to your body.
- 7:39Speaker 1: You need to listen to the experts, take a step
- 7:42Speaker 1: back and give your body what it really needs. The
- 7:46Speaker 1: next strategy be easy on yourself. I know that's easier
- 7:50Speaker 1: said than done, and I know what comes when you're
- 7:53Speaker 1: on the injured list. It definitely results in a little
- 7:56Speaker 1: bit less active of a lifestyle. And even if you
- 8:00Speaker 1: do find those substitutes, which can be some sort of filler,
- 8:04Speaker 1: it's just not the same. With that can come a
- 8:07Speaker 1: little bit of a shift in your mental space. And
- 8:10Speaker 1: I've been there, you know. Last year after the Boston Marathon,
- 8:15Speaker 1: I had a really bad nerve going into it and
- 8:17Speaker 1: was able to get through okay. But the conditions and
- 8:20Speaker 1: the wetness and the awfulness of that day really took
- 8:23Speaker 1: a toll on my body, and I knew I needed
- 8:25Speaker 1: to take a step back, and that step back after
- 8:29Speaker 1: race day it caused me to get kind of upset.
- 8:33Speaker 1: I just want you guys to know that it's normal
- 8:35Speaker 1: to get upset. It's normal to be bummed. You don't
- 8:38Speaker 1: work really hard in your sport or in your field
- 8:41Speaker 1: to watch everything go wrong. But with that said, think
- 8:45Speaker 1: long term. This is just right now. So at this moment.
- 8:49Speaker 1: When you have an injury, you have the chance to
- 8:52Speaker 1: do other work right instead of the physical, take a
- 8:55Speaker 1: step back and think about the bigger picture, think about
- 8:58Speaker 1: the mental. Maybe now is the perfect time for you
- 9:02Speaker 1: to work on defining what your values are. Maybe now
- 9:05Speaker 1: is the perfect time for you to use the hours
- 9:08Speaker 1: that you'd spend running on the weekend to work on
- 9:11Speaker 1: your career goals. Or think about the habits that you have,
- 9:15Speaker 1: the good ones, the bad ones, and the ones that
- 9:17Speaker 1: you want to adopt to make you feel like a
- 9:19Speaker 1: better you. What I'm trying to say as a whole
- 9:22Speaker 1: here is that there is so much room for personal
- 9:24Speaker 1: growth and it doesn't just need to be when they're
- 9:27Speaker 1: sweat dripping down your face and your heart is beating
- 9:30Speaker 1: out of your chest. The injured list doesn't have to
- 9:33Speaker 1: define you. You are bigger than this, I promise you.
- 9:37Speaker 1: And that's it for now. Just some quick tips on
- 9:40Speaker 1: how I got through my own injuries, hoping that you
- 9:43Speaker 1: can use them to get through yours. If you need me,
- 9:46Speaker 1: if you have anything to add Emily at Hurdle us at,
