- 1:03Speaker 1: most notable legend notable legend in mountaineer history. Yes, sir,
- 1:11Speaker 1: and and and and I've got a couple of things
- 1:14Speaker 1: to talk about to even make it even more amazing
- 1:19Speaker 1: in my in my view, ladies and gentlemen, I'd like
- 1:23Speaker 1: to bring in into the conversation Major Harris of w
- 1:28Speaker 1: v U.
- 1:31Speaker 2: Yes, you even got least it with a shirt on
- 1:34Speaker 2: a w shirt on.
- 1:37Speaker 1: Hey, man, how you doing so.
- 1:42Speaker 2: Major? When you you know?
- 1:43Speaker 1: And I'm going to jump right into this because because
- 1:47Speaker 1: for me and here, I used to hear your name
- 1:50Speaker 1: like all the time and all the greatness that came
- 1:54Speaker 1: with it when you were when you were in that moment,
- 1:58Speaker 1: did you know how big it was?
- 2:04Speaker 4: No? No, you know, not really. You know, I kind
- 2:07Speaker 4: of compare it to like being in a huddle. You know,
- 2:10Speaker 4: you right, the crowd is out there screaming, but when
- 2:13Speaker 4: you're in a huddle, you really just focus in on
- 2:15Speaker 4: you know, what you gotta do, what you got to accomplish.
- 2:19Speaker 4: So not really didn't have no clue, to be honest.
- 2:21Speaker 1: Okay, so now when you look back, when you look
- 2:25Speaker 1: back at it, how do you see it now? And
- 2:28Speaker 1: I know it's a tough kind of question because you
- 2:31Speaker 1: don't want to come off arrogant or anything like that.
- 2:34Speaker 1: But like when I mean, let's be honest. I mean,
- 2:37Speaker 1: you know, when you start talking about WVU and you
- 2:39Speaker 1: start talking about its greatest athletes and when you start
- 2:43Speaker 1: talking about football, I mean, you are you are one
- 2:48Speaker 1: of those those individuals that comes along with WVU. It's
- 2:56Speaker 1: like WVU and Major Harrison and then everybody else that
- 2:59Speaker 1: comes along. Yeah, how does that? How do you feel
- 3:04Speaker 1: with that? And or do you even feel it that way?
- 3:08Speaker 4: No, you know what, you know, I look at it like,
- 3:11Speaker 4: you know, at the time that I played, you know,
- 3:13Speaker 4: I thought we had a great team and it made
- 3:16Speaker 4: my job easier. So like when I look back on it,
- 3:19Speaker 4: you know, I'm like, man, we played for the national championship. Man,
- 3:23Speaker 4: I was up for the halves. But you know, because
- 3:25Speaker 4: let them things stick out like that. But at the time,
- 3:28Speaker 4: you're not thinking in terms of you know what I mean,
- 3:31Speaker 4: accomplishments like that. You just out there, you know what
- 3:34Speaker 4: I mean.
- 3:35Speaker 1: You know, I'm here, Okay, okay, yeah, great, Yeah, let
- 3:44Speaker 1: me let at least it jump in here.
- 3:45Speaker 2: I know you can't wait to get a question.
- 3:48Speaker 5: I was so excited to hear that you were.
- 3:50Speaker 6: You were joining us tonight, Major, So it's it's good
- 3:52Speaker 6: to have you on the podcast.
- 3:53Speaker 5: Thank you for your time. So Major you are.
- 3:56Speaker 6: I'm going to touch on what Carl just asked you
- 3:59Speaker 6: about it, maybe expand and a bit on it. You're
- 4:01Speaker 6: you're often credited with with changing the way the quarterback
- 4:04Speaker 6: position was played at WU during your time there. Did
- 4:08Speaker 6: you feel like a trailblazer at that time, did you
- 4:11Speaker 6: feel like you were changing the face of quarterback play
- 4:14Speaker 6: in Morgantown?
- 4:16Speaker 4: You know, not really. You know, like I said at
- 4:18Speaker 4: the time that I was playing, I'm just out there
- 4:20Speaker 4: having fun. I'm not termed, you know what I mean
- 4:24Speaker 4: being a trail Blazer. Now what's crazy is like years later,
- 4:28Speaker 4: you know what I mean, when you like, when you
- 4:30Speaker 4: get past the situation, then you look back on it,
- 4:33Speaker 4: then you see it differently. You know. It's like somebody
- 4:36Speaker 4: brought to my attention a couple of years ago, he said. May,
- 4:39Speaker 4: I don't know if you realize when y'all played in
- 4:42Speaker 4: the National Championship against Notre Dame, you and Tony Rice
- 4:46Speaker 4: was the first two black quarterbacks the face off with
- 4:49Speaker 4: national you know, National Championship game. I didn't even know that,
- 4:52Speaker 4: you know what I mean.
- 4:53Speaker 1: When that got past me, that one got past Mead. Yeah,
- 4:58Speaker 1: but let me ask this though. Okay, So when you
- 5:02Speaker 1: look back, and especially especially when you go back in
- 5:07Speaker 1: and you start looking at you know how many times
- 5:10Speaker 1: they they'll move a black quarterback. You got to be
- 5:12Speaker 1: a receiver, you got to be a running back, you
- 5:14Speaker 1: gotta be a dB. How did you I mean, I
- 5:19Speaker 1: mean it speaks volumes because no one, to my knowledge
- 5:22Speaker 1: I would I couldn't imagine anybody saying like, we need
- 5:25Speaker 1: to change his position because you know, he's black, lett
- 5:28Speaker 1: let's put him in that more athletic position.
- 5:31Speaker 2: He can't he can't lead a team. But clearly, clearly
- 5:37Speaker 2: that was not true.
- 5:39Speaker 1: Do you feel as though maybe you are the trailblazer
- 5:43Speaker 1: in that in beating that stereotype?
- 5:47Speaker 4: You know what, I really don't look at it like that.
- 5:49Speaker 4: You know, It's funny. I was just down in Morgantown
- 5:52Speaker 4: the other day and and they had a thing academic
- 5:56Speaker 4: about that coach Ford passed away, so they had something
- 5:59Speaker 4: for him to there. And one of the reasons why
- 6:01Speaker 4: I went to West Virginia was Geryld Tally's brother, John Tally,
- 6:05Speaker 4: was quarterbacking there. You know, I didn't want to go
- 6:08Speaker 4: to school where you know, i'd be the first black quarterback.
- 6:12Speaker 4: So really, when I was, you know, watching college football,
- 6:15Speaker 4: I was like, man, Westervintini, you got a black quarterback
- 6:17Speaker 4: who was you know, John Tally. So I never really
- 6:20Speaker 4: looked at it like being a trailblazer. I was looking at, well,
- 6:24Speaker 4: the school I want to go to. I'm hopefully they
- 6:27Speaker 4: have a black quarterback already there, so you know what
- 6:29Speaker 4: I mean, I won't be the first one. So I
- 6:31Speaker 4: kind of was looking at it like that.
- 6:34Speaker 1: When you when you looked when you looked around and
- 6:38Speaker 1: you looked at some of the.
- 6:40Speaker 2: Some of the other teams, did you did you see many.
- 6:45Speaker 1: Teams or were there other teams that had that were
- 6:48Speaker 1: recruiting you have black quarterbacks?
- 6:52Speaker 4: Well yeah, well that's one thing I was really like
- 6:54Speaker 4: focused on, you know what I mean, Like time Pitt
- 6:57Speaker 4: really didn't have a black quarterback, Penn State didn't really
- 7:01Speaker 4: have a black quarterback, you know what West Virginia did,
- 7:04Speaker 4: And then like Arizona State, that was one of the
- 7:06Speaker 4: schools I was looking at. Then you have schools like
- 7:10Speaker 4: Rutgers and them, and it's like, you know, it's kind
- 7:13Speaker 4: of iffy. You don't know what they trying to do,
- 7:16Speaker 4: you know what I mean. But you know, I think
- 7:18Speaker 4: as I went to like as I was getting recruited,
- 7:21Speaker 4: then I wanted to go to a school that they
- 7:23Speaker 4: threw them. You know, they throw the ball a lot.
- 7:26Speaker 4: So you had schools like Nebraska and Oklahoma, you know,
- 7:30Speaker 4: they had black quarterbacks, but they really didn't throw the
- 7:32Speaker 4: ball all like that. You know, my favorite quarterbacks, and
- 7:36Speaker 4: I always talk about this at the time, was a
- 7:38Speaker 4: guy named Tony Robinson played at Tennessee. He was like
- 7:42Speaker 4: a quarterback that I kind of like he expired me, Like, man,
- 7:47Speaker 4: I want to do what he's doing. You know, there's
- 7:48Speaker 4: a guy that was in the office where they dropped
- 7:51Speaker 4: back and throw the ball, you know what I mean.
- 7:53Speaker 4: So I was kind of looking at it like that.
- 7:55Speaker 4: I remember, you know, looking at the Michigans program guy
- 8:00Speaker 4: to see and I think they might have had one
- 8:03Speaker 4: or two quarterbacks, but they you know what I mean,
- 8:05Speaker 4: they was like third fourth string or what have you.
- 8:07Speaker 4: So I remember, you know, going through program guys looking
- 8:10Speaker 4: to see if teams had black quarterbacks.
- 8:13Speaker 5: Wow.
- 8:14Speaker 6: Well, speaking of inspiration, now that you said that, Major,
- 8:17Speaker 6: I want you to go back in time for just
- 8:19Speaker 6: a minute and take me back in time anyway to
- 8:22Speaker 6: uh when in nineteen eighty eight when you had that
- 8:25Speaker 6: famous run against Penn State, you know, kind of walk
- 8:28Speaker 6: us through that and what was going through through your
- 8:31Speaker 6: mind when you when you made that play.
- 8:33Speaker 5: Did you feel like you were gonna score?
- 8:35Speaker 4: No? You know, the funny part about it is through
- 8:38Speaker 4: the whole the whole time, Like the clock, the thirty
- 8:40Speaker 4: second clock was running. So I'm telling the line, get
- 8:43Speaker 4: up to the line, get up to the line. I
- 8:45Speaker 4: didn't want to call it time, you know what I mean.
- 8:47Speaker 4: And once we get up to the line, I knew
- 8:49Speaker 4: it was an option, but I've just forgot which way
- 8:51Speaker 4: it was. So I think about it is once they
- 8:56Speaker 4: got the ball and open up to the field, I said,
- 8:58Speaker 4: I said to myself, damn, I went the wrong way.
- 9:01Speaker 4: So all throughout the play, I was the only thing
- 9:04Speaker 4: I was thinking about that, you know, I f fked up.
- 9:07Speaker 4: I messed up, you know what I mean. And it
- 9:09Speaker 4: just so happened that, you know, I kind of got lucky,
- 9:11Speaker 4: you know what I mean. And it was funny because
- 9:13Speaker 4: coach kneeling, he said, like when I came on to
- 9:16Speaker 4: the sideline, I said, my folk, coach, you know what
- 9:19Speaker 4: I mean? You know what I mean. So my whole
- 9:22Speaker 4: message was, man, I messed up on that place.
- 9:26Speaker 1: Oh wow, but but it's it and and you say
- 9:31Speaker 1: you messed up, but it is. It is one of
- 9:33Speaker 1: the most notable plays that that people will will relate to.
- 9:40Speaker 2: So how did that make you feel?
- 9:43Speaker 4: You know, it's crazy it's like, you know, that's the
- 9:46Speaker 4: play that always, you know, always brought up. So in
- 9:49Speaker 4: a sense, that's you know, and that's what's crazy. That
- 9:52Speaker 4: was something I didn't practice. It was just like something
- 9:55Speaker 4: that just happened. And and it was a play that
- 9:58Speaker 4: a broken play, Philly, you know. I mean, so's it's
- 10:01Speaker 4: funny because when I look back on my career, the
- 10:04Speaker 4: play that I felt I messed up the most on
- 10:07Speaker 4: was the play that most people remember the most, you
- 10:09Speaker 4: know what I mean.
- 10:10Speaker 1: And I'm okay, so I'm gonna I'm gonna switch and
- 10:13Speaker 1: our other co host, Hollis Lewis just came into the building.
- 10:19Speaker 1: When you think about when and I'm gonna kind of
- 10:22Speaker 1: make this a little like serious maybe, but when you
- 10:26Speaker 1: look when you look back and you and again looking
- 10:30Speaker 1: at the black quarterback, and and and how few there
- 10:34Speaker 1: were and how and again, all I can remember was,
- 10:39Speaker 1: you know, as soon as you come in as a quarterback,
- 10:41Speaker 1: you're gonna be a receiver, You're gonna be a running back,
- 10:43Speaker 1: You're gonna be a dB. When I mean, do you
- 10:49Speaker 1: do you really understand? Like because when I look at this,
- 10:53Speaker 1: and I'm I'm older than you, But when I look
- 10:55Speaker 1: at When I think about that, I think, like how
- 10:59Speaker 1: historic that that moment was to see I mean to
- 11:04Speaker 1: literally see and be here in West Virginia playing for
- 11:06Speaker 1: West Virginia and seeing this brother out there running, running
- 11:11Speaker 1: the offense, leading the team. I thought that was the
- 11:15Speaker 1: most I thought that was like the highest achievement that
- 11:18Speaker 1: a person could get personally in this game of football,
- 11:22Speaker 1: in this especially in this state at that time.
- 11:27Speaker 4: Yeah, I understanding what you said. You know, you know
- 11:28Speaker 4: what the wildest part about it is, so when I
- 11:31Speaker 4: signed to come to West Virginia, like I was saying,
- 11:33Speaker 4: John Talley was a quarterback right now, pulling into that
- 11:37Speaker 4: whole whole manset of like what we're talking about. Once
- 11:41Speaker 4: I get down there, he gets switched to wide receiver,
- 11:44Speaker 4: you know what I mean. So now or one of
- 11:48Speaker 4: the reasons why I'm going to West Virginia, you know
- 11:50Speaker 4: what I mean, because they had a black quarterback. Now
- 11:52Speaker 4: when I get there, they switched the wide receiver. So
- 11:56Speaker 4: you know, just from that, I'm knowing like, well, you
- 11:59Speaker 4: know you you know, as a quarterback, you got a
- 12:02Speaker 4: short lease, you know what I mean. So I'm looking
- 12:04Speaker 4: at it in terms of that, and it does and
- 12:08Speaker 4: your but at the same time, I really felt that, well,
- 12:12Speaker 4: give an opportunity, I'm gonna make the best of it
- 12:14Speaker 4: and then just go from there. So that's how I
- 12:17Speaker 4: looked at it. I really looked at it as a challenge,
- 12:20Speaker 4: even though you know, like I said, when I got there,
- 12:23Speaker 4: you know, they moved him. So I'm like, man, that
- 12:26Speaker 4: that's and pressure to me because, like I said, one of.
- 12:28Speaker 2: The reasons, now you're the guy he was there. Yeah,
- 12:32Speaker 2: how you.
- 12:32Speaker 7: Doing, maj This is Hollis Lewis. You know, it's definitely
- 12:35Speaker 7: an honor for me to be talking to interviewing you.
- 12:37Speaker 7: And I was a black quarterback here in the valley
- 12:41Speaker 7: in addition to playing for coachallya state. And when I
- 12:45Speaker 7: think about you, I always think about in terms of,
- 12:48Speaker 7: you know, your playing style, has it would translate today?
- 12:53Speaker 7: You know, if you were playing today, you would be
- 12:55Speaker 7: the absolute number one pig, no doubt about it. It
- 12:58Speaker 7: wouldn't even be a question. And you know, and we
- 13:01Speaker 7: know where you would be at. So if you could,
- 13:05Speaker 7: could you just like maybe, because if we have the draft,
- 13:07Speaker 7: come to the NFL Draft coming up, could you take
- 13:09Speaker 7: us back to when you were coming out and you know,
- 13:13Speaker 7: you were and I would say a revolutionary you were.
- 13:16Speaker 7: You were a you know, the first of maybe your
- 13:20Speaker 7: kind and major college football where you were, you know,
- 13:23Speaker 7: not only a great rusher, but you could also pass
- 13:26Speaker 7: equally as well. So when you were coming out going
- 13:28Speaker 7: through your draft process, take us through that process and
- 13:31Speaker 7: kind of what was going on at.
- 13:33Speaker 4: That time, you know. You know, I think that when
- 13:36Speaker 4: I look back on it, I think it was a
- 13:39Speaker 4: system in place to where older coaches probably didn't know
- 13:43Speaker 4: what to do with, you know what I mean, Like
- 13:46Speaker 4: as far as a new type of office, so to speak,
- 13:49Speaker 4: where you got a quarterback like mobile, you know what
- 13:52Speaker 4: I mean. Coach Leeland, that's why I got to take
- 13:54Speaker 4: my hat off Joy because in a sense he said,
- 13:57Speaker 4: well we're gonna try something new, you know what I mean.
- 14:00Speaker 4: But when you get to the NFL level, you know
- 14:02Speaker 4: what I mean, I think a lot of coaches, you know,
- 14:05Speaker 4: they really old school and they don't want to basically
- 14:07Speaker 4: change their ways. You know. I always use an example
- 14:10Speaker 4: of I want to say, the coach war New Orleans
- 14:14Speaker 4: Saints More. Yeah, you know what I mean. He kind
- 14:19Speaker 4: of was setting his ways, but then his son come
- 14:21Speaker 4: along after him and got Michael Vick, you know what
- 14:24Speaker 4: I mean, you know kind of like that, you know,
- 14:27Speaker 4: and I think like the older coaches was kind of
- 14:30Speaker 4: setting their ways. And then right after that, that's when
- 14:34Speaker 4: I thought it was more acceptable for you know what
- 14:36Speaker 4: I mean, I guess a mobile quarterback to play in
- 14:40Speaker 4: the NFL. But during my time, I think it was
- 14:42Speaker 4: a transition period.
- 14:44Speaker 7: That's actually a good way to phrase it. And I
- 14:46Speaker 7: think that's exactly what it was, because I think right
- 14:48Speaker 7: after you had Randall cunnyhand come out. But even going back,
- 14:51Speaker 7: if you look at a guy like Warren Moon, who
- 14:54Speaker 7: to me, I would put him up there as one
- 14:57Speaker 7: of the greatest quarterbacks ever because people forget he's been
- 15:00Speaker 7: six years in Canadian football. I think you won like
- 15:03Speaker 7: five Great Cups and different things of that nature. When
- 15:06Speaker 7: you were coming out, was there any talk about you
- 15:10Speaker 7: possibly going to running back where teams talk were your
- 15:12Speaker 7: agent were they talking to you like that? Or for
- 15:15Speaker 7: you it was just like quarterback, Ryan, I'm not doing
- 15:18Speaker 7: it well.
- 15:19Speaker 4: You know. You know the funny thing when when I
- 15:21Speaker 4: was coming out of high school, they got a game
- 15:23Speaker 4: up here called the Big thirty three, and they were saying, well, well,
- 15:27Speaker 4: you know some of the guys got to play d back.
- 15:31Speaker 4: I put it. You know, we would be out there
- 15:32Speaker 4: practicing and I like, I couldn't tackle, so they couldn't
- 15:38Speaker 4: sque you know what I mean. I'm running in it, guys,
- 15:43Speaker 4: I'm missing tackles and similar, well we have you mouth.
- 15:46Speaker 4: I kind of took it, you know, I kind of
- 15:48Speaker 4: took it like that. But but as far as you know, well,
- 15:53Speaker 4: you know one one guy that don't I'll tell you
- 15:55Speaker 4: one guy that really I guess helped the Gble quarterback
- 16:01Speaker 4: is Don mc speerenson. That's here, Yes, because you know
- 16:05Speaker 4: they they they ran the table the year before us,
- 16:09Speaker 4: so then the next year then we kind of ran
- 16:11Speaker 4: the table. So being that, you know, a lot of
- 16:14Speaker 4: coaches seeing that, they said, oh oh the coach kneeling
- 16:18Speaker 4: and coach McPherson might be onto something. So I think
- 16:21Speaker 4: that kind of helped. But we always knew the brask Oklahoma,
- 16:25Speaker 4: you know, they was doing everything down there. But you know,
- 16:28Speaker 4: when you had two schools like big schools at the time,
- 16:31Speaker 4: you know what I mean, running the table like that,
- 16:33Speaker 4: I think that I think that kind of like opened
- 16:36Speaker 4: a lot of people's ass as far as maybe maybe
- 16:39Speaker 4: this can work.
- 16:40Speaker 5: Yeah, so so major.
- 16:42Speaker 6: I think you you were drafted in nineteen ninety correct,
- 16:45Speaker 6: that was the year they were in the Okay, So
- 16:48Speaker 6: I read some information today that you really never expected
- 16:53Speaker 6: to get drafted, that you really hadn't had any contact
- 16:56Speaker 6: with anyone from the NFL until Raiders coach thin was
- 17:00Speaker 6: Artschell phoned you. So, so how did that play on
- 17:04Speaker 6: your confidence in psyche about being drafted? I mean, was
- 17:06Speaker 6: it a tough I mean you probably just didn't even
- 17:10Speaker 6: think about it since you didn't expect it, or how
- 17:12Speaker 6: did it?
- 17:12Speaker 5: How did that play out?
- 17:13Speaker 4: Well? Well, what it happened? You know, it's kind of
- 17:16Speaker 4: funny like when the year that I came out, that
- 17:19Speaker 4: was the first year that they had what you call
- 17:21Speaker 4: the underclassmen Combine, and what it was it was always
- 17:26Speaker 4: all juniors, me Emms Smith, Julius say Out, Andre Ware,
- 17:30Speaker 4: we were all juniors, George, So I think it was
- 17:33Speaker 4: like thirty one of us, we was all up, went
- 17:35Speaker 4: up to Indianapolis. And what had happened was I knew
- 17:39Speaker 4: emmss Smith from being on the Playball All American team.
- 17:45Speaker 4: So once we got up to the Combine, when the
- 17:47Speaker 4: season was over, you know, I kind of knew some
- 17:50Speaker 4: guys because we was all on the you know, all
- 17:51Speaker 4: American team. So we got up to the Combine and
- 17:56Speaker 4: what had happened was we had to take a physical
- 17:59Speaker 4: and I remember talking to Himmett because you know, I
- 18:02Speaker 4: know him either I knew him real well, you know,
- 18:04Speaker 4: compared to a lot of the other guys. I said, well, Emma,
- 18:06Speaker 4: what's going on? What you doing? And man, I'm gonna
- 18:09Speaker 4: go to my room, man, and uh, get ready for
- 18:11Speaker 4: the comeback. So you know what I mean. I go
- 18:14Speaker 4: to my room and you know what I mean, I'm
- 18:16Speaker 4: just getting ready for the combat. So then the next morning,
- 18:19Speaker 4: go down to breakfast and to come up to me, like, man,
- 18:22Speaker 4: what you do? Last night's amazing. I went in my room.
- 18:25Speaker 4: He's uh, you know, was watching TV getting ready. He's all. Man,
- 18:28Speaker 4: last night he said, Man, like about seven or eight
- 18:33Speaker 4: teams took like seven or eight players out to eat.
- 18:36Speaker 4: Make a long story short, I think every player about
- 18:40Speaker 4: the combine teamed up with with different teams and they
- 18:43Speaker 4: took them all off to eat. So as I'm asking, guys, yeah,
- 18:46Speaker 4: I went here, I went here, you know what I mean.
- 18:48Speaker 4: So I knew right then and there that you know,
- 18:51Speaker 4: seeing that. You know what I mean, I didn't go out,
- 18:54Speaker 4: you know what I mean that you know that you
- 18:56Speaker 4: know things wasn't looking you know what I mean looking.
- 18:59Speaker 5: At my Yeah, you weren't. You weren't invited to the table,
- 19:02Speaker 5: so you kind of had a feeling, right.
- 19:04Speaker 4: Yeah, Immocent they had big steaks, so you know I
- 19:07Speaker 4: was mad about it. You know what's funny. I always
- 19:13Speaker 4: tell a story, Immocent man made my steak. Man, Mo,
- 19:17Speaker 4: you know, you gotta you know when you you you know,
- 19:20Speaker 4: I'm not looking at it at Emmitt Smith. Now I'm
- 19:22Speaker 4: looking at a guy and high school college, you know
- 19:24Speaker 4: what I'm saying. Like he was like a maid a maide.
- 19:28Speaker 4: You couldn't man, that steak was so big.
- 19:35Speaker 2: So yeah, so y'all just having fun.
- 19:38Speaker 4: Yeah yeah, definitely.
- 19:39Speaker 8: Ye.
- 19:40Speaker 1: But but when you look back at those when you
- 19:44Speaker 1: look back at those moments and people that you meet
- 19:47Speaker 1: and you say those names, and like when you say
- 19:49Speaker 1: like an image Smith, people like what who you sure
- 19:53Speaker 1: you know? And and for you you know him as
- 19:59Speaker 1: Immitt and he oh you is major and it's and
- 20:02Speaker 1: it's all it's just funny games, y'all just kicking it
- 20:05Speaker 1: wherever you're at and I think athletes have that ability
- 20:09Speaker 1: to draw in to each other without any problem whatsoever. Yeah,
- 20:17Speaker 1: you know, no matter. You know, I'm a Marshall guy,
- 20:20Speaker 1: you know, and hated WVU. Hated him one because they
- 20:24Speaker 1: didn't recruit me and they did and then Robert Alexander
- 20:28Speaker 1: was my idol, and you know, so all that went
- 20:31Speaker 1: that went south on you know for him. Uh So
- 20:35Speaker 1: I had always hated uh WVU, but then all of
- 20:39Speaker 1: a sudden, you know that these guys keep popping up
- 20:43Speaker 1: and I'm like, oh, major hairs.
- 20:46Speaker 2: Oh let me check him out, let.
- 20:47Speaker 1: Me see what he's like, you know, so that you
- 20:49Speaker 1: know they there's always been like just a a major
- 20:54Speaker 1: player some kind of way at WVU. In football, for sure,
- 21:02Speaker 1: all the time. Almost every year there's that there's that
- 21:06Speaker 1: player that's seemingly special. And knowing your year was special,
- 21:14Speaker 1: when you look back, who were some of the guys
- 21:17Speaker 1: that you think that were major impacts for WVU and
- 21:23Speaker 1: that you you respected because of their play, offense, defense, whatever.
- 21:28Speaker 4: Well, you know, we had a lot of great players,
- 21:31Speaker 4: but I think the player that kind of got us
- 21:33Speaker 4: over the hump as far as going from a team
- 21:36Speaker 4: that might be nine and two ten and one to
- 21:38Speaker 4: going undefeated. You know what was Reggie Rembert? You know
- 21:41Speaker 4: he came out of junior come yeah, uh, you know
- 21:45Speaker 4: you got a guy. You know, he was like a
- 21:48Speaker 4: Randy Moss like before Randy. But I think Randy was
- 21:50Speaker 4: more explosives than me, you know what I mean. But
- 21:53Speaker 4: you're talking about guy six six six five runner four
- 21:56Speaker 4: three forty, you know what I mean. That's that's been
- 22:00Speaker 4: because you know from a quarterback point where you know
- 22:04Speaker 4: he ran up the sideline even though he's covered. You
- 22:07Speaker 4: just throw it up there. You know, you take your
- 22:08Speaker 4: job easier, you know what I mean. So I think
- 22:11Speaker 4: Reggie was Canada guy. He could take the top off
- 22:14Speaker 4: of defense and he just made an offense that much
- 22:17Speaker 4: more explosive.
- 22:19Speaker 7: Now now I made you play it in a lot
- 22:20Speaker 7: of different professional leagues from Canada to the Arena League.
- 22:24Speaker 7: And what were some of your best memories? And I'll
- 22:28Speaker 7: just tell you mine, right, I remember you guys playing
- 22:31Speaker 7: for the Lightning and you guys had lately feel packed
- 22:35Speaker 7: like I badly remember that going with my dad. I mean,
- 22:38Speaker 7: if people don't understand, like you know lately, field is
- 22:42Speaker 7: one of those environments.
- 22:43Speaker 2: Where if it's packed.
- 22:45Speaker 7: It's it's a really really, really good environment here in Charleston,
- 22:48Speaker 7: and it's always a memory that I had with myself
- 22:51Speaker 7: and my dad. But from all your different like I said,
- 22:54Speaker 7: playing the Canadian Football League the NFL AFL, what were
- 22:57Speaker 7: some of your best memories professionally.
- 23:00Speaker 4: You know what you know, when I look back on it,
- 23:02Speaker 4: you know, being that I didn't make it to the NFL,
- 23:05Speaker 4: I enjoyed all of it, you know what I mean,
- 23:07Speaker 4: Like when I played at Rena. But just the camaraderie,
- 23:09Speaker 4: hanging with the guys, you know what I mean, even
- 23:12Speaker 4: you know when I you know, that's why I played
- 23:14Speaker 4: a couple of years when I was down at Charleston,
- 23:16Speaker 4: just hanging out, you know what I mean, the bus
- 23:18Speaker 4: rides going to the games, just I mean, just hanging
- 23:21Speaker 4: out with the fellas, you know what I mean. To me,
- 23:23Speaker 4: that was the best part, you know what I mean,
- 23:25Speaker 4: just not you know, it got like once once I
- 23:28Speaker 4: realized I wasn't going to the NFL. So now I'm
- 23:31Speaker 4: not focusing on the NFL. Now, I'm just focused on
- 23:34Speaker 4: just having a good time with you know, you know,
- 23:37Speaker 4: just with other guys, you know, just hanging out after games,
- 23:40Speaker 4: going to practice is you know, having fun. So that's
- 23:43Speaker 4: how I gotta looked at all of it was fun,
- 23:45Speaker 4: you know, I mean, winning was cool. But you know,
- 23:48Speaker 4: once you once you once it's in your mind that
- 23:51Speaker 4: you ain't moving up to the highest level, then you
- 23:54Speaker 4: begin to settle in on just you know what I mean,
- 23:56Speaker 4: this is it for me. Let me just enjoy this moment.
- 23:59Speaker 4: So that's how kind of looked at it.
- 24:01Speaker 6: Oh, so I'm going to go back to the draft again,
- 24:04Speaker 6: your nineteen ninety NFL draft major so and I want
- 24:08Speaker 6: to see if this is you know, maybe we could
- 24:10Speaker 6: clear up some things I read. But at that time,
- 24:13Speaker 6: there was a perception that you and Don Neeland were
- 24:15Speaker 6: kind of at odds. Right before the draft, there were
- 24:18Speaker 6: rumors surfacing about the coach giving NFL scouts some poor
- 24:21Speaker 6: reports on you. How much truth is there to that?
- 24:25Speaker 6: And what is your relationship with don Nielan today?
- 24:28Speaker 4: You know what, I think that's uh, you know, I think,
- 24:31Speaker 4: you know, I think the way the draft went, I
- 24:33Speaker 4: think people assumed that. But now, but we had a
- 24:36Speaker 4: good relationship. But going to that whole situation of how
- 24:39Speaker 4: when you get past a situation to look back on it,
- 24:43Speaker 4: you know, I think I kind of handle it raw.
- 24:46Speaker 4: I'm gonna be hones, you know, I can honestly say,
- 24:49Speaker 4: you know, when I look back on it, when I
- 24:52Speaker 4: when you know, even though you know, played for national championship,
- 24:56Speaker 4: up for the Housman twice, at that point, I figured
- 25:00Speaker 4: I can't do nothing else in college. Most of the
- 25:02Speaker 4: guys that I played with was, you know, was older
- 25:05Speaker 4: with seniors, and everybody was graduating or leaving, you know
- 25:08Speaker 4: what I mean. Redy was gone. So now if I
- 25:11Speaker 4: stay now, I'm gonna be end up playing with guys
- 25:13Speaker 4: that I came in with who really didn't have no experience.
- 25:17Speaker 4: So I just felt that at that time, from a
- 25:20Speaker 4: resume standpoint, it was time for me to go. So
- 25:23Speaker 4: being that I was thinking like that, I guess I
- 25:26Speaker 4: was kind of stubborn, and really, when I look back
- 25:30Speaker 4: on it, I was wrong. I probably should have went
- 25:32Speaker 4: to Coach Kneeling instead. He just said, man, I'm gone,
- 25:34Speaker 4: I'm out of here, you know what I mean. I
- 25:36Speaker 4: probably went to Coach Kneeling just to have that conversation,
- 25:40Speaker 4: you know what I mean, instead of just basically, man,
- 25:43Speaker 4: I'm gone, you know what I mean. So when I
- 25:44Speaker 4: look back on it, I can honestly say that I
- 25:47Speaker 4: handled that situation wrong, you know what I mean. I
- 25:50Speaker 4: think I was in the wrong, to be honest. And
- 25:53Speaker 4: on top of that, you know, from not realizing the
- 25:58Speaker 4: situation with black quarterbacks anyway, you know what I mean.
- 26:01Speaker 4: So I think I was a little bit stubborn to
- 26:05Speaker 4: the point to where I didn't see through the little
- 26:09Speaker 4: like the little things that really, you know what I mean,
- 26:12Speaker 4: that was affecting a lot of quarterbacks after tim which
- 26:15Speaker 4: I'm talking about black quarterback. So I think I handled
- 26:18Speaker 4: it wrong. And you know, I just think I handled
- 26:21Speaker 4: it wrong, to be honest.
- 26:23Speaker 1: I you know what, when I hear you, when I
- 26:26Speaker 1: hear you say that you think you handled it wrong,
- 26:28Speaker 1: you know, I think there's a whole host of players
- 26:31Speaker 1: who would love to have the opportunity to to say
- 26:35Speaker 1: that out loud, because I think we all probably at
- 26:38Speaker 1: some point in time said or done something when we
- 26:41Speaker 1: were when right.
- 26:42Speaker 2: At the peak of.
- 26:44Speaker 1: Our success or wanting to have success, and and now
- 26:49Speaker 1: have the opportunity to look back at it.
- 26:53Speaker 2: And and and actually be able to own it, you know.
- 26:56Speaker 1: And so I'll get my hats off, that's off to
- 27:00Speaker 1: you to to be able to do that. But I'll
- 27:06Speaker 1: say this, I think as a and and again, I
- 27:12Speaker 1: can't even throw the ball, so I can't even assume quarterback.
- 27:15Speaker 1: But I can't imagine being a quarterback being black and
- 27:21Speaker 1: and and some of the challenges that you guys faced
- 27:27Speaker 1: simply because you were those two things.
- 27:31Speaker 2: You know, you were a quarterback and you were black.
- 27:33Speaker 2: It didn't really matter the skill set. I think I could.
- 27:37Speaker 1: I can see me being so frustrated behind that and
- 27:42Speaker 1: with that constantly every time somebody said something, so my
- 27:47Speaker 1: my hats off to you know, and even to Hollis
- 27:50Speaker 1: is is trying to trying to manage that, trying to
- 27:54Speaker 1: play a position that that the only thing that's in
- 27:57Speaker 1: your way is your color.
- 28:00Speaker 4: That's crazy, No, I know what you you know what's wild.
- 28:04Speaker 4: The older I get, and you know, even with basketball,
- 28:07Speaker 4: I noticed a lot of guys that played ball, like say,
- 28:11Speaker 4: they didn't make it. They don't even watch football no more.
- 28:14Speaker 4: I loved it. I still watch football, but I can
- 28:16Speaker 4: see the bitterness, you know what I mean, And a
- 28:20Speaker 4: lot of guys that actually played that really didn't make
- 28:23Speaker 4: it to that next level, you know what I mean?
- 28:25Speaker 4: And I see it every day. I mean guys. Oh, man,
- 28:28Speaker 4: I don't even watch football no more. Guys, I don't
- 28:31Speaker 4: even watch basketball, you know what I mean, because I
- 28:34Speaker 4: guess them not making it, you know what I mean,
- 28:37Speaker 4: It's almost like they broken hearted, you know what I mean.
- 28:41Speaker 4: I kind of looked at it. Well, you know, given opportunity,
- 28:44Speaker 4: I did the best I can do. Is just it
- 28:46Speaker 4: was out of my hands. That's how I kind of
- 28:48Speaker 4: looked at it. So I really don't feel bitter or anything.
- 28:51Speaker 4: And like I said, you know, the whole thing, I
- 28:54Speaker 4: think that the position that I was in, I think
- 28:57Speaker 4: I handled it wrong. You know. It was almost I
- 29:00Speaker 4: was trying to force force force my hand, so to speak,
- 29:04Speaker 4: you know what I mean. When really, but I'm young,
- 29:06Speaker 4: you know what I mean. You're young, you really you
- 29:08Speaker 4: know I'm looking at it, man, I'm up for the hasman,
- 29:10Speaker 4: I'm all a you know what I mean, I'm not
- 29:12Speaker 4: looking at it, you know what I mean. Now that
- 29:14Speaker 4: I'm older to look back more mature, you know, it's
- 29:17Speaker 4: just like the whole thing, I kind of look at
- 29:20Speaker 4: it like, you know, like the whole thing with Jackie Robinson,
- 29:22Speaker 4: it was a big thing. Well, Jackie Robinson wasn't the
- 29:25Speaker 4: best player to go to the majors. But he you
- 29:29Speaker 4: know what I mean, he was the right for that moment,
- 29:31Speaker 4: you know what I mean, Big Wall League players, you
- 29:34Speaker 4: know what I mean. They said that probably was better,
- 29:36Speaker 4: but it's just the mindset wasn't right, you know what
- 29:39Speaker 4: I mean. So when I look back on it, I
- 29:41Speaker 4: just think that I went about that whole situation wrong.
- 29:46Speaker 4: Now I will add on to I remember going up
- 29:49Speaker 4: to the combat, going back to the combat thing, and
- 29:51Speaker 4: it was wild because when I got up there, like
- 29:53Speaker 4: I said, and you know, they took all the players
- 29:55Speaker 4: out to eat. I'll never forget the GM for New Orleans.
- 30:00Speaker 4: He came up to me because really, you know, and
- 30:02Speaker 4: it's funny because we all up the combat. I remember
- 30:06Speaker 4: Don Shulany. You know, this was like legends, you know
- 30:08Speaker 4: what I mean. And I never forget. The only guy
- 30:11Speaker 4: that really had a conversation with me as far as
- 30:16Speaker 4: what's going on in the future was the New Orleans
- 30:19Speaker 4: Saints GM. I remember he came up to me and
- 30:21Speaker 4: he told me said, man, my brother, he's a he's
- 30:26Speaker 4: of Canada. He wants you bad, you know what I mean.
- 30:29Speaker 4: So you know, I can see where I'm being steered
- 30:31Speaker 4: to go up Canada. He said, man made keep My
- 30:33Speaker 4: brother wants you bad, you know what I mean. And
- 30:35Speaker 4: I'm like, this is New Orleans him. So when it happened,
- 30:40Speaker 4: you know, I kind of forget about it because his
- 30:43Speaker 4: brother was the head coach of of the of the
- 30:49Speaker 4: BC lines. But what it happened was Toronto organized had
- 30:54Speaker 4: my rights, and I remember, you know, what's funny, it's
- 30:57Speaker 4: a small world. When I went up to Toronto, my
- 31:01Speaker 4: host was what's his name? He played that. I'm gonna
- 31:04Speaker 4: say he played that. He played at State what's the deed?
- 31:07Speaker 4: As a wide receiver? What's his name? He was real good?
- 31:11Speaker 4: Daryl was it Daryl oh Man? But he played that state.
- 31:16Speaker 4: He was one of the top receivers up in Canada.
- 31:18Speaker 4: I can't think of his name right now.
- 31:20Speaker 1: I'm thinking I should remember that one, but I don't.
- 31:24Speaker 4: Yeh yeah, matter of fact, he Daryl oh Man. I can't,
- 31:30Speaker 4: you know, but he was my host when I went up,
- 31:32Speaker 4: when I went to Canada, and it was funny. Now
- 31:35Speaker 4: I kind of forget about what the New Orleans Jim
- 31:38Speaker 4: said to me about his brothers. So I go up. Now,
- 31:40Speaker 4: Vancouver got my right, So I'm up there. They showing
- 31:42Speaker 4: me around. And what was funny is after I got
- 31:45Speaker 4: up there on when I was leaving, I get on
- 31:48Speaker 4: the plane, they said, you hear what happened? I said,
- 31:50Speaker 4: what you got traded to the BC Lions. So it
- 31:55Speaker 4: all goes back to what with the GM of New
- 31:59Speaker 4: Orleans and say said, he said, my brother wants you bad.
- 32:03Speaker 4: You know what I mean. So it was like they
- 32:05Speaker 4: you know what I mean, kind of new and they
- 32:07Speaker 4: traded for me and I ended up going out there
- 32:09Speaker 4: with his brother. Then they end up signing Dug Flutie,
- 32:11Speaker 4: so I ended up backing up Dug Flutie. But it's wild.
- 32:15Speaker 4: It was the guy. Oh no, hold on, he might
- 32:17Speaker 4: have went to Central State. He might have went to
- 32:19Speaker 4: Central State. Okay, but yeah, he might have went to Yeah,
- 32:23Speaker 4: he might have went to Central State. And I remember
- 32:26Speaker 4: he was telling me because I guess he was staying
- 32:29Speaker 4: in Charleston. He was saying that his wife was a cheerleader.
- 32:33Speaker 4: They said a CBA team or something down there in Charleston.
- 32:38Speaker 4: I think his wife was. He was telling me. I
- 32:41Speaker 4: think I might have got a confused. He might have
- 32:42Speaker 4: went to Central State. But his wife was a cheerleader
- 32:45Speaker 4: and lived in Charleston. Okay, I think that might be it,
- 32:48Speaker 4: but yeah, yeah, I never forget that the gym of
- 32:52Speaker 4: New Orleans, you know what I mean. He told me
- 32:55Speaker 4: that his brother wanted me, and I ended up up there,
- 32:57Speaker 4: so you know what I mean, So I know they'd
- 32:59Speaker 4: be talking behind him, you know. Yeah.
- 33:05Speaker 7: No, I was just saying, in addition to your plan,
- 33:07Speaker 7: you've had some obviously from training, some coaching stops, and
- 33:11Speaker 7: there was a report that you you you are going
- 33:13Speaker 7: to be coaching a new minor not minor lely, but
- 33:16Speaker 7: a new arena league team that's going to be emerging
- 33:20Speaker 7: up north. Is it is any validity to that?
- 33:23Speaker 4: Well, you know, it's you know what's happening with with
- 33:26Speaker 4: a lot of these like leagues. You know, they trying
- 33:28Speaker 4: to I guess, get players to kind of bring publicity,
- 33:32Speaker 4: to generate money. But a lot of times them leagues
- 33:35Speaker 4: don't go like as far as with that league. It's
- 33:37Speaker 4: like a fourteen league, and I don't you know, I
- 33:40Speaker 4: think they're gonna probably have to hold off or even
- 33:43Speaker 4: if it do go, really the money, you know what
- 33:45Speaker 4: I mean, they basically trying to generate some money. So no,
- 33:48Speaker 4: I'm not I'm not even going here. But yeah, but
- 33:51Speaker 4: I did get some calls about it. But no, I'm not,
- 33:53Speaker 4: I'm not I'm I'm not the coach.
- 33:55Speaker 1: Okay, so major, what do you? What are you doing now?
- 34:01Speaker 2: Like? What are you into hanging out? What are you?
- 34:05Speaker 1: You know, is there anything specific your round sports or
- 34:08Speaker 1: round quarterbacks?
- 34:10Speaker 2: You know, teaching them? What do you what's happening with
- 34:12Speaker 2: you now?
- 34:13Speaker 4: You know? You know, it's funny I think back when
- 34:15Speaker 4: I did. I'm still golfing, you know, I know, sehn
- 34:19Speaker 4: I remember, Yeah, I was a sneaker on the course.
- 34:22Speaker 4: You know that, you know what I mean. That's that's
- 34:25Speaker 4: a long time man, you know, so I'm still I'm
- 34:29Speaker 4: still golfing. I really feel that I'm matured to now
- 34:34Speaker 4: understand what I'm doing when I'm swinging. Now before I
- 34:37Speaker 4: was just swinging. But I do that, you know. And
- 34:40Speaker 4: another thing other than coaching, I think a good thing
- 34:43Speaker 4: I be like refereeing and stuff like that. Really yeah, yeah,
- 34:47Speaker 4: I've been doing a lot of referee in you know,
- 34:49Speaker 4: basketball and football. So yeah, that's that's my new little hobby.
- 34:53Speaker 4: I do that. You know, referee.
- 34:55Speaker 2: What level do you what? What level do you do?
- 34:58Speaker 4: Well, I'm high school you know, I do half who
- 35:00Speaker 4: AAU you know what I mean. So matter of fact,
- 35:02Speaker 4: they just had up here. They just said the AAU
- 35:04Speaker 4: tournament up here. So I was up here. You know,
- 35:07Speaker 4: you see some of the like some of the top players,
- 35:10Speaker 4: you know what I mean, you know, you know as
- 35:12Speaker 4: far as basketball like that. So yeah, I do that,
- 35:15Speaker 4: But I'm still that golf, you know what I mean.
- 35:18Speaker 1: Still, I mean, bro, it's it's I'm gonna tell you now,
- 35:23Speaker 1: it's that golf ball is probably the worst ball that
- 35:29Speaker 1: you're gonna want to chase ever, Yeah, because you can't
- 35:34Speaker 1: get like it's like it's too small, you're too big
- 35:39Speaker 1: to not be able to hit that ball far enough.
- 35:42Speaker 1: And we and we just can't accept the reality that
- 35:44Speaker 1: that ball's winning.
- 35:47Speaker 4: You know what's funny. It was funny is you know,
- 35:50Speaker 4: playing the sport where you stripped and then you out there.
- 35:57Speaker 1: And look even if you hit it far in the
- 36:00Speaker 1: woods somewhere.
- 36:03Speaker 5: Well that's according to YouTube playing golf, right.
- 36:05Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, man, we'll have to hook up to try
- 36:08Speaker 2: to play some make sure we got enough balls.
- 36:11Speaker 4: Though, I said, I remember, you know, it's only like yesterday, man,
- 36:17Speaker 4: I remember down there and you'll used to come on
- 36:20Speaker 4: to you.
- 36:20Speaker 1: Know what I mean? Yes, man, I hadn't. I hadn't
- 36:26Speaker 1: had a chance to hit a ball like probably in
- 36:27Speaker 1: about three years.
- 36:29Speaker 2: Oh and and so I and I keep.
- 36:32Speaker 1: Saying I want to get get back at it, but
- 36:35Speaker 1: I haven't. I haven't gotten there yet because I already
- 36:37Speaker 1: know what it's gonna look like. And I've already I've
- 36:41Speaker 1: been to that place already before, and I hate to
- 36:43Speaker 1: have to go back and start all over again. But
- 36:48Speaker 1: and I know least it has another question. But I'm
- 36:50Speaker 1: gonna throw this one now. They say quarterbacks usually are
- 36:55Speaker 1: extremely good golfers. The ones who play golf are usually
- 37:00Speaker 1: really good golfers.
- 37:01Speaker 2: So now are you are you? Are you trying to
- 37:03Speaker 2: trick me in to day? You you okay? And then
- 37:07Speaker 2: we go playing? Did you show me up? Is that
- 37:09Speaker 2: what was happening here?
- 37:10Speaker 4: Well? You know what, I definitely from my days now,
- 37:13Speaker 4: you know, living in Chruggle on to Shawnee all the time,
- 37:15Speaker 4: I definitely got a lot better. Ain't gonna you know,
- 37:18Speaker 4: I definitely get But you know, I think it would
- 37:21Speaker 4: happen a lot of times. Like they say, kickers and
- 37:23Speaker 4: punters are good, because in practice, we really don't get hit.
- 37:27Speaker 2: So you know what I mean.
- 37:28Speaker 4: You know, running back, you know, it's hard to be
- 37:31Speaker 4: a great golfer. You're running back and practice getting pounded.
- 37:34Speaker 4: Then you you know, you swore you're going out there
- 37:37Speaker 4: hitting golf balls. So a quarterback kickers and punters, I think,
- 37:41Speaker 4: you know what I mean.
- 37:42Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, but you but you, but you, but you're
- 37:47Speaker 1: a quarterback too. That one at Lisa.
- 37:55Speaker 5: Now, I was just going to say major.
- 37:57Speaker 6: We have an ESPN on here in the studio as
- 37:59Speaker 6: well while we are recording the podcast, and they've they've
- 38:02Speaker 6: got the logo about the NFL Draft being in Pittsburgh
- 38:05Speaker 6: this year. So that's your hometown, correct.
- 38:09Speaker 4: Yeah right, yeah, yeah, yeah right here now.
- 38:12Speaker 5: Yeah yeah, So what are your feelings about that?
- 38:14Speaker 6: What's the vibe in Pittsburgh for for this big, big event.
- 38:18Speaker 4: Well, you know, it's like a countdown, but today is
- 38:21Speaker 4: the first time that, you know, with some people coming
- 38:24Speaker 4: to town. Yeah, we're here for the draft, you know
- 38:26Speaker 4: what I mean. One of one of my buddies, he's
- 38:29Speaker 4: been out like calling golf courses, trying to rent a
- 38:32Speaker 4: golf court, you know, wrap people around, you know what
- 38:34Speaker 4: I mean. So everybody up here is trying to find
- 38:37Speaker 4: a way, you know what I mean, the capitalize on
- 38:40Speaker 4: what's going on. So yeah, so yeah, it's it's big
- 38:43Speaker 4: and it's wild because as you drive across the one bridge,
- 38:47Speaker 4: you can see them setting up the stage, you know
- 38:49Speaker 4: what I mean, where the players gonna come out at.
- 38:51Speaker 4: I just got my pass where you know, I'm gonna
- 38:54Speaker 4: try to go to, uh, you know a lot of
- 38:57Speaker 4: the events, you know what I mean that's going on,
- 38:59Speaker 4: and you know, I kind of look at it like,
- 39:01Speaker 4: you know, it's a once in a lifestame thing. So
- 39:03Speaker 4: I'm gonna try to get down there, you know, for
- 39:05Speaker 4: the first pick to film that, you know what I mean,
- 39:07Speaker 4: because how many times you think be at the at
- 39:11Speaker 4: the site where you know, the number one draft draft
- 39:14Speaker 4: and get picked and he come out on stage and
- 39:16Speaker 4: stuff like that. So you know, it's like a once
- 39:18Speaker 4: in a lifestyme here. So you know, I'm gonna definitely
- 39:21Speaker 4: try to take advantage of it.
- 39:22Speaker 2: See I went, I went to one.
- 39:25Speaker 1: Well I've been to a couple, but I but I
- 39:27Speaker 1: but I went my first one. It was it was
- 39:33Speaker 1: challenging for me because it was because it's you know,
- 39:36Speaker 1: but this is this again is back in the day
- 39:38Speaker 1: when they when they didn't break it up, so like
- 39:40Speaker 1: you can go and catch catch the first round, and
- 39:43Speaker 1: then tomorrow the next day you can get you get
- 39:46Speaker 1: a couple more rounds, and and and so on and
- 39:48Speaker 1: so forth.
- 39:49Speaker 2: But I was there. My first draft that I went
- 39:52Speaker 2: to was like.
- 39:52Speaker 1: One that was I don't remember the year, but it
- 39:54Speaker 1: was like like that. It was the full twelve rounds,
- 39:59Speaker 1: thirteen rounds, whatever it was. And man, I was not
- 40:04Speaker 1: like I couldn't sit like I couldn't. I couldn't Like
- 40:07Speaker 1: I was just like, I gotta go somewhere else.
- 40:10Speaker 5: Man, Like I.
- 40:12Speaker 1: Can't sit here and wait on them to call all
- 40:14Speaker 1: these names. I mean, I appreciate the guys going in,
- 40:17Speaker 1: but man.
- 40:17Speaker 2: I can't. I can't sit with a problem. Yeah, I'll
- 40:21Speaker 2: give you that. I just couldn't do it, you know.
- 40:25Speaker 1: But you know, I think though, I think when I
- 40:29Speaker 1: when I personally look back at the draft, and I
- 40:31Speaker 1: think about the moment that you that you get it's
- 40:36Speaker 1: so short and it's and it's only the it's it's
- 40:41Speaker 1: only that moment and it's and there's no next guarantee,
- 40:46Speaker 1: you know, And and I think most of the time
- 40:48Speaker 1: when you think that you're getting drafted. No matter what
- 40:51Speaker 1: round it is, you got a shot. But but it's
- 40:55Speaker 1: you know, I just don't know if that's always the case.
- 40:58Speaker 1: I mean, there's gonna be or there's gonna be more
- 41:01Speaker 1: let go, then there's gonna be that are gonna be taken,
- 41:04Speaker 1: you know for sure. And I think and I think
- 41:06Speaker 1: that's you know, I think that's a tough situation too,
- 41:09Speaker 1: for for a whole host of guys who have spent
- 41:11Speaker 1: their entire life trying to get there.
- 41:14Speaker 4: Yeah, you know what, Yeah, you know what's wild, dude.
- 41:16Speaker 4: I agree with everything you're saying. I think guys going
- 41:19Speaker 4: into the draft is in better positions now with this
- 41:22Speaker 4: whole n I l you know what I mean. So
- 41:24Speaker 4: you know, you know what's coming out, You know what
- 41:27Speaker 4: I mean. It's like man livered, you know what I mean?
- 41:31Speaker 4: Like this this is life changing. Now. You know, some
- 41:34Speaker 4: of these guys they're gonna be sitting in there, but
- 41:36Speaker 4: you know they got money in their pocket. You know.
- 41:40Speaker 1: That's a that's a valid point, man, Because if I'm
- 41:44Speaker 1: at Marshall and I'm I'm making some men il money,
- 41:48Speaker 1: I'm probably in my time, I'm better off at Marshall.
- 41:52Speaker 1: I know for a fact, I'm gonna be better off
- 41:54Speaker 1: at Marshall getting money than I am as a as
- 41:56Speaker 1: a as a seventh as an ultimately seventh round pick
- 42:00Speaker 1: in Minnesota.
- 42:01Speaker 2: And I know that for a fact.
- 42:07Speaker 4: I make you think about it. Some of these guys,
- 42:10Speaker 4: you know, some of these quarterbacks, they might go four four,
- 42:13Speaker 4: fifth round, but they already didn't say for a million dollars,
- 42:16Speaker 4: you know what I mean. You know it's you know,
- 42:19Speaker 4: it's it's a big difference. It's it's definitely a big difference,
- 42:22Speaker 4: you know. But I know what you're saying, Like it's
- 42:26Speaker 4: so it's even though it's pressure, but I think it's
- 42:28Speaker 4: less pressure because some guys, man, they like, like you said, Caul,
- 42:32Speaker 4: they like, man, why come out, I'm staying.
- 42:37Speaker 1: There when you're making that kind of money in college?
- 42:41Speaker 1: Why why why rush it?
- 42:44Speaker 7: Yeah?
- 42:44Speaker 1: Because you because everybody knows that no matter how good
- 42:47Speaker 1: you are in college, that there's not a guarantee that
- 42:50Speaker 1: you're gonna you're gonna go to the league and make
- 42:52Speaker 1: that transition. It's just it's a different kind of structure
- 42:56Speaker 1: and you may not make it. So if you have
- 42:58Speaker 1: an opportunity to make money in college, you better stay
- 43:02Speaker 1: as long as you can and get it because because
- 43:05Speaker 1: because the NFL is not is not for sure, that's that.
- 43:09Speaker 1: That's a fine.
- 43:13Speaker 2: Y'all got anything?
- 43:14Speaker 1: Hey man, we appreciate you coming on, and we gotta
- 43:19Speaker 1: get together and we gotta knock some balls out of
- 43:21Speaker 1: the out into the water and in the sand and
- 43:23Speaker 1: do all that kind of stuff. So I'll shoot you.
- 43:25Speaker 1: I'm gonna shoot your text, man, and let's try to
- 43:27Speaker 1: get together.
- 43:28Speaker 4: Okay, definitely, thank you many.
- 43:31Speaker 5: Enjoy the draft this weekend.
- 43:36Speaker 4: Matter of fact, y'all, what I'm gonna do, I'm gonna
- 43:37Speaker 4: take some pictures call and I'm gonna shoot them to
- 43:39Speaker 4: your phone, you know, after the draft, so y'all can
- 43:43Speaker 4: see them.
- 43:43Speaker 2: Okay, thank you, thank you. All right, my brother, you
- 43:48Speaker 2: take care.
- 43:48Speaker 5: Now, thank you.
- 43:50Speaker 4: Yep.
- 43:52Speaker 1: All right, ladies, we're gonna well, we're gont's take a
- 43:54Speaker 1: quick break and then we'll come right back.

- 45:18Speaker 9: Now back to the conversation.
- 45:21Speaker 1: All right, Hey, so my mind and I've I've talked
- 45:25Speaker 1: to him before, I've seen him before, and we've been
- 45:27Speaker 1: around each other before, but like this, in this scenario,
- 45:32Speaker 1: he just feels so comfortable. It's like he comes across
- 45:35Speaker 1: so easy. And you know, I think there was some
- 45:39Speaker 1: questions that we put out there that he could have
- 45:41Speaker 1: easily kind of shuffled away from.
- 45:43Speaker 2: Yeah, and he didn't.
- 45:45Speaker 6: He Actually he's very he's very humble. I mean, he
- 45:49Speaker 6: just you know, he could admit, you know, when he
- 45:52Speaker 6: was younger, that there were things that he would change
- 45:54Speaker 6: now if he could go back and do it. I mean,
- 45:56Speaker 6: he didn't act like, you know, he was always perfect
- 45:59Speaker 6: all the time. So I liked that about a humility.
- 46:02Speaker 7: Yeah, very gracious, and I think he's a prime example
- 46:05Speaker 7: of what can happen if you stay those years at
- 46:09Speaker 7: one place, if you are a legend, you know, you know,
- 46:13Speaker 7: West Virginia is always going to treat Major Harrison, always
- 46:16Speaker 7: take care of Major Harrison, whatever capacity that they need
- 46:20Speaker 7: that he needs to be taken care of. So it's
- 46:22Speaker 7: one of those things where I think it's you know,
- 46:24Speaker 7: even though he didn't probably make it as far as
- 46:26Speaker 7: he wanted to make it within his professional career, him
- 46:29Speaker 7: being a legend here has has value. And I also think, like,
- 46:32Speaker 7: you know, it's just an example of somebody that was
- 46:35Speaker 7: ahead of the system, because even outside of you know,
- 46:38Speaker 7: just being a you know, black quarterback, he was just
- 46:41Speaker 7: simply head of the system.
- 46:43Speaker 2: They didn't know.
- 46:44Speaker 7: There was no system, there was no no code for
- 46:47Speaker 7: what to do with that sort of talent. Like I
- 46:51Speaker 7: said today, he's a he's a number one draft pick.
- 46:55Speaker 7: It's not even a question. He's just you know, how
- 46:57Speaker 7: much money he's going to sign for it. That's the
- 46:59Speaker 7: only thing that we would be, you know, debating. And
- 47:01Speaker 7: his athleticism was so beyond it's time. And I would say, like,
- 47:08Speaker 7: and the thing is even like a McPherson, even like
- 47:11Speaker 7: a Tommy Fraser, even like those guys. He wasn't a
- 47:15Speaker 7: just a pure option quarterback. And I think that's what
- 47:18Speaker 7: separated him. He was a scrambler, which was different, which
- 47:23Speaker 7: is way different, was different than a running quarterback. And
- 47:25Speaker 7: I wish I would have said that because again, he
- 47:28Speaker 7: wasn't necessarily just a running quarterback. He was a scrambler.
- 47:31Speaker 7: So he was somebody that could take the seventh step
- 47:33Speaker 7: drop in that Verara offense, look around by himself time
- 47:37Speaker 7: and throw it downfield or make something happen with his feet.
- 47:40Speaker 7: So he was a different quarterback than what they were
- 47:43Speaker 7: used to. He was something. He was, you know, a
- 47:45Speaker 7: unicorn out there at that time, right.
- 47:47Speaker 1: And to your point, when you when you start talking
- 47:50Speaker 1: about running the beer and wishbone type of stuff where
- 47:54Speaker 1: a quarterback has an opportunity to run, that's he wasn't.
- 47:57Speaker 2: That kind of guy. Yeah, he was that.
- 48:01Speaker 1: He was that drop back, Random Cunningham and that type
- 48:05Speaker 1: of Michael Vick.
- 48:06Speaker 2: Michael Vick.
- 48:07Speaker 1: He was that type of quarterback who had all the
- 48:10Speaker 1: quarterbacks essentials but could also run and avoid contact.
- 48:16Speaker 7: And when you think about the legacy of WVU quarterbacks,
- 48:19Speaker 7: I mean when you go from like I said, Major Harris,
- 48:23Speaker 7: who was kind of the proto type, you know, and
- 48:25Speaker 7: then you go from him to a Pat White. Yeah,
- 48:28Speaker 7: you know, it's really amazing that we've just you know,
- 48:32Speaker 7: state of West Virginia have had that level quarterback and
- 48:34Speaker 7: talking about Mark Burger or Javid Hosteler, Geno Smith. When
- 48:38Speaker 7: you talk about just the quarterbacks Brian Leftwig, Chad Pennington
- 48:43Speaker 7: that have come through you know, Western.
- 48:45Speaker 5: Years, you know what I mean, it's pretty impressed.
- 48:47Speaker 7: It's very, very impressive, even you know, the kid that
- 48:51Speaker 7: playing for the Bears now Tyson. So it's just you know,
- 48:55Speaker 7: and like I said, him just being gracious in him
- 48:57Speaker 7: just not being bitter. And I think he has a
- 49:00Speaker 7: pretty good grasp on his place in history.
- 49:03Speaker 5: Well he also wasn't he.
- 49:06Speaker 6: Admitted into inducted, I should say, into the College Football
- 49:10Speaker 6: Hall of Fame in two thousand and nine. So I
- 49:12Speaker 6: mean he has his own accolades. Just didn't go to
- 49:15Speaker 6: the to the furthest level of the NFL. But he
- 49:18Speaker 6: really he set some some wonderful records at that collegiate level.
- 49:22Speaker 2: And I'll make the case.
- 49:23Speaker 1: I don't know if there's maybe there's not a lot
- 49:26Speaker 1: of people who understand that. You know that he made
- 49:29Speaker 1: the College Hall of Fame and the College Hall of
- 49:33Speaker 1: Fame there are major I mean, that's where major players go, right,
- 49:39Speaker 1: you know, and he's there.
- 49:42Speaker 7: And I think to even be considered, don't you have
- 49:44Speaker 7: to be like a first team all Americans had?
- 49:46Speaker 5: I think he was.
- 49:47Speaker 2: He was. He was the first team, the second team
- 49:48Speaker 2: that was.
- 49:50Speaker 1: I don't know what I didn't make it, so I
- 49:52Speaker 1: don't know what the requirements are.
- 49:55Speaker 7: But before we close out, I wanted to ask you
- 49:57Speaker 7: guys about again. You probably didn't watch it WrestleMania. Okay,
- 50:02Speaker 7: I know you didn't watch it. I watched it a
- 50:05Speaker 7: little bit, but I got it.
- 50:06Speaker 2: We got one minute. But look, look, who.
- 50:11Speaker 7: Is your favorite wrestler of all time? Did you have
- 50:13Speaker 7: a favorite wrestler going? I mean, I.
- 50:15Speaker 6: Guess, well no, but I will say because I hear
- 50:18Speaker 6: his name is HAULK Coke.
- 50:20Speaker 7: Yes, that's what I would have said, that you didn't
- 50:21Speaker 7: watch wrestling like in the seventies and like growing up
- 50:24Speaker 7: now for real either.
- 50:26Speaker 2: I think everybody watched wrestling at a time. No, you
- 50:29Speaker 2: think can you please? Can you please tell me why
- 50:35Speaker 2: you asked that question? Because you know it's WrestleMania is
- 50:38Speaker 2: a big event. ESPN was covering it.
- 50:41Speaker 7: It's like the first time that I seen like it
- 50:43Speaker 7: get like sports coverage, like they were on ESPN radio,
- 50:47Speaker 7: like it was all over the place. You normally it's
- 50:49Speaker 7: like one of those friends things that you just had
- 50:50Speaker 7: to buy pay per view. But you know, I think, well,
- 50:53Speaker 7: it's more into like.
- 50:54Speaker 6: The I think they're trying to get the name out there.
- 50:57Speaker 6: They probably signed a pretty call contract with ESPN to
- 51:02Speaker 6: get all that coverage.
- 51:03Speaker 1: You know so well, Lisa, just so you know you're
- 51:06Speaker 1: not getting fired this week.
- 51:11Speaker 7: Fire shout out to brock Lesser and he had his
- 51:13Speaker 7: last match, so it was good man boy.
- 51:18Speaker 4: All right.
