- 0:01Midrash Rubber on Parachute by Yigash sheer #4 Let's continue
- 0:05to make sense of the opening phrase by Yigash, A Love you
- 0:08Hooda. We've seen so far two different
- 0:10interpretations, one that he they physically came close to
- 0:13each other. We also saw an interpretation
- 0:16that it wasn't about physical space, but about understanding
- 0:19and how language can be used to cut through the misunderstanding
- 0:24and to present levels of depth in in words that perhaps aren't
- 0:28there on the outside but are they're contained in the inside.
- 0:30And here we have a further interpretation of Vaiyigash.
- 0:34So the Madrid says Vaiyigash is doesn't mean that he approached
- 0:38him, but rather he roused himself in preparation for
- 0:43something. Let's have a look.
- 0:45Rabbi Yehuda and Rabbi Nehemiah and the rabbis discuss the
- 0:49phrase Vaiyigash, a love Yehuda. Rabbi Yehuda says Hagashallah
- 0:53milkhammer. This word viagash, approaching
- 0:56was for war. Why?
- 0:58Because the root nun gimmel Shin is used in the context of
- 1:03warfare, as we still have in the puzzle in the book of Shmuel
- 1:07Vayigash Yohavaham. I share you more.
- 1:10They they drew near, they approached la milkhammer, says
- 1:14Rabbi Yehuda. That's what Judah Yehuda was
- 1:17doing in our text. He was approaching yourself for
- 1:21war or being a hemia says no complete opposite.
- 1:26Hagash shall appease. No he wasn't.
- 1:28This word is found in relation to appeasement.
- 1:34Nagash is used with respect to persuasion as it's written in
- 1:38the book of Joshua. The children of Judah approached
- 1:42by Yik Shu. They approached Joshua and that
- 1:46that moving closer to him was to persuade him to do what they
- 1:51wanted. So we've got is it war or is it
- 1:55to try and persuade the Rabbana army.
- 1:57What do the rabbis tell us, Hagasha completely different
- 2:00Litfila. This is about prayer.
- 2:02Nothing to do with war. Nothing to do.
- 2:05We're trying to have a discussion.
- 2:06This was deafening Vagigash Eli Yahuenavi and Elijah the prophet
- 2:11came approached by Omar Hashem. OK.
- 2:14And then the verse continues. We have again the same word.
- 2:18The same root is found in three completely different context.
- 2:24Now here we've got already an interesting debate.
- 2:27How do we understand war? Was it literally?
- 2:29I mean, did the did the brothers or you heard them really think
- 2:33that they could take on the Egyptian empire?
- 2:35That seems a little for a lot far fetched.
- 2:37Not really not even a little far fetched that he thinks he could
- 2:40try and take him down. So perhaps war could be no could
- 2:44mean literal. He's going to try and kill
- 2:45Joseph and Pharaoh and destroy Egypt.
- 2:48Or perhaps he came to fight him in a dispute.
- 2:52But that would work because that's completely opposite of
- 2:55the word Pius, which is to pacify, to persuade, to calm
- 3:00things down. Definitely not a physical
- 3:03altercation. And then we have the concept
- 3:06also of tufila. The term fila is a request that
- 3:12someone in his kindness should grant him something to which,
- 3:16based on justice, he has no claim.
- 3:18You heard the statement to yourself that he should let
- 3:21Binyamin return home because Yaakov would otherwise die falls
- 3:25into this category. So was he really there was some
- 3:28level of I can persuade him, was it really desperate or was was
- 3:32he really quite bold in his assertion?
- 3:38And along comes Robbie El Azahi says Pishat Lahan Judah stated
- 3:43all these intentions explicitly to to Joseph emblem Milkhammer
- 3:48Anibar. If it's for battle that I must
- 3:50prepare myself, I'm coming, Emily Pius Anibar.
- 3:54If it's for persuasion, I, I'm preparing myself to do that.
- 3:57I'm coming. And Emily, it's fila Anibar.
- 4:01If you want, I'm if a prayer, I'm going to prepare myself for
- 4:04that as well. Sin, what's the point?
- 4:06Why is he trying to link them all together?
- 4:09Because strictly speaking, that word, vai yikash has
- 4:12connotations of each of those three very different meanings
- 4:17and therefore each could be applied equally to our verse.
- 4:21So says Rabi El Azar, you must understand its usage here to
- 4:25suggest he prepared himself in each of these three ways.
- 4:28Very interesting. Doesn't that suggest that he was
- 4:32behaving just like his dad? When his dad prepared to meet
- 4:36his uncle Asaf, he also prepared for milk Hammam.
- 4:40The gifts you could say was to persuade him and also fought
- 4:43Fila. So they seem to have an
- 4:45understanding in the family when things go wrong.
- 4:48You got to take a multi layered approach.
- 4:51Have the most wonderful full day.
