- 0:00Welcome back to a hamster with a blunt pen knife.
- 0:03The Doctor Who father and son are fear they may stop talking
- 0:08at some point. Commentary Podcast.
- 0:11Hello John. Hello, Eddie.
- 0:13Hello. Evening.
- 0:15Well, you're both smiling, so that's a good start.
- 0:19Yeah, I'm in the other room from him.
- 0:20I can. As usual, we're battling it out
- 0:23tonight because I've started to come to the conclusion that
- 0:26neither one of you gentlemen can agree on anything.
- 0:29Is this true? Well, we can agree on some
- 0:32things like like the the Andrew guitar is a good key to time
- 0:37story, but I don't know if we agree on anything else.
- 0:41Oh. Just that.
- 0:43Wow. There's there's probably more,
- 0:45but I'm just naming one example off the top of my head.
- 0:48Do you both like, say, the Curse of Fenrick?
- 0:51Yeah. John, is it all right?
- 0:53Yeah. Even it's not as good as season
- 0:5525. Season 25 isn't going it's.
- 0:58Because. Obviously great showing, the
- 1:00Galaxy says favorite who story. Oh, yes, it is.
- 1:03Yeah. Actually, we're going to do one
- 1:04on that one with John. I don't.
- 1:07I don't ever hear what your favorite story is, Joe.
- 1:09Me well Turn left is my favorite new who story and I think the
- 1:14war games might be my favorite classic.
- 1:17I love the war games. Good choice, Connoisseurs
- 1:19choice. Well, that's interesting because
- 1:21I I don't think it was even my favorite of the season.
- 1:25I have I have the invasion in the mind Robber above it.
- 1:28Are you putting the boxing gloves on already?
- 1:31Yeah, yeah. Good, good.
- 1:34I'm already I'm already ready to get bash for my comments on the
- 1:37Key to Time for the Pirate Planet.
- 1:39Yeah. Oh, I haven't read them yet.
- 1:41I saw all these comments coming in today and I thought I'll read
- 1:43them before I go to bed. But now you said that I'll read
- 1:46them in the morning because my blood boils before bed.
- 1:49Obviously, as I mentioned, I shaded City of Death.
- 1:52Oh no, I did read that one. Yeah, you're a Gary Russell on
- 1:58nuts. No, I'm no, I'm just not falling
- 2:02for fandoms propaganda. You wait till they're both on
- 2:05the same hat, same strictly, that's going to be.
- 2:08Fair oh season 2 I'm. Still preparing myself mentally
- 2:12now, even though it's not just yet fellas now.
- 2:16Still got two more season. No, no, I know something
- 2:19meteoric occurred between the US discussing the Silurians.
- 2:25You know, not the story, but you know that hideous Matt Smith
- 2:28episode and discussing this. What is that?
- 2:32Are you talking about Hooverville, perchance?
- 2:34That's right. And what happened to
- 2:35Hooverville? A Doctor Who convention,
- 2:39obviously. No, we met.
- 2:41We all met. Oh fabulous.
- 2:44For the first time in one place and you must didn't end, which
- 2:48we thought it might do. And you lot decided to go up to
- 2:52what I believe was the myth and legend sound and say he was a #1
- 2:55fan. Now that's while we're here
- 3:00talking about Hooverville, I know I brought it up.
- 3:02I think we all need to talk to John on your behalf, Eddie,
- 3:04frankly at the moment. And the piffling amount of money
- 3:08that you was allowed to spend in the merchandise hall, I mean
- 3:13what? I mean, you've got to account
- 3:15for inflation, John, £20 or whatever it was is going to get
- 3:18you nothing at all. 25 and he was and he was limiting that for
- 3:23me and my 2 cousins. No, no drink, drink.
- 3:28That was each Yeah, he could have had three pages of the
- 3:33dying days for that. Who could want more?
- 3:35Eddie, how much did he spend? I don't know actually.
- 3:40Oh, OK. You should have totaled that up
- 3:42it. Was all on the obvious books.
- 3:43Down. I thought you were chaperoning
- 3:45for the day. Well.
- 3:49No, not you, Eddie. Obviously I know someone may
- 3:53have spent about 80. Yeah, that was me, yes.
- 3:57On like 5 books. Unbelievably, yes.
- 4:01And a couple of BBVS. But did you have a nice time,
- 4:03Eddie? Yes.
- 4:05Yeah. Did you get to meet anyone?
- 4:07That Joe Martin. Oh wow, So what did you say to
- 4:10her? I mentioned how we were meant to
- 4:13meet her at regenerations in Swansea a couple years ago
- 4:15before she pulled out. You told her off.
- 4:18You told her. Off and she apologized.
- 4:22Of all the people you could tell off the war, the fugitive Dr.,
- 4:26you know, she's got a big gun, you know?
- 4:28You didn't have a big gun on here at the time.
- 4:31That's very true, I. Was quite impressed with
- 4:33obviously Eddie's cousin Evan because he actually went up in
- 4:36his first ever panel and went and asked a question.
- 4:39Steph the Wally is that. What was the question?
- 4:43It was like, what's your favorite TV role you've had?
- 4:46I'm assuming she didn't say that.
- 4:48Dismal episode. Joy to the whales.
- 4:50She did. I think she did say Anita was
- 4:52growing on here, but she mentioned about the stuff as
- 4:54well. Is that sort of growing on her
- 4:56like a fungus? Yeah.
- 4:57Probably Joy to the World is horrendous.
- 5:03Can we do that one one day please?
- 5:05Yeah, that's fine. Well, for the 15th dollar
- 5:07country, you can either do that or I can take you to the robot
- 5:10revolution again. Which one would you rather?
- 5:12Oh, I mean neither, but we'll do one of.
- 5:15Them you'd probably rather go and watch hungry S again.
- 5:19You must realise I just can't say no to you anymore.
- 5:22Whatever you say you want to do, we'll do it all right.
- 5:26As long as we. Yeah, we could be really bitchy
- 5:28about it. Of course.
- 5:29Of. Course we can.
- 5:30And John, does you have a lovely time.
- 5:33I had a fantastic time. There wasn't enough time to see
- 5:36everyone though, there never is in these things and I had to go
- 5:40home before the all the good stuff started in the.
- 5:42Evening, obviously, because he had to drive us all home and not
- 5:44get drunk. Yeah.
- 5:47Shocking. What?
- 5:48Don't get that drunk. Wait.
- 5:50Yes, you do. You stay up till like 6:00 AM at
- 5:51every convention you go to. I always get the truth, you
- 5:54know, on these ones where you're here.
- 5:56I don't know what bullshit he's telling me when you're not here
- 5:58and whether it's true or not, but I always get the truth when
- 6:01you're ready. Thank you.
- 6:03I'm John. Am I correct?
- 6:04Did you sit on my knee at one point?
- 6:06And have a I. I believe we have photographic
- 6:09evidence. And then Luke Malloy jumped on
- 6:11mine as well. Yeah, I know, Gordon.
- 6:13What a tart. Basically a gangbang.
- 6:15I mean, I don't know what was going on there in that cafe.
- 6:17It was a dream come true. It was wonderful to meet both of
- 6:24you in the flesh. It was so nice and I hope we.
- 6:26Can do it against what? He met both of us in the rebel
- 6:28flesh. Oh, Eddie, why do you keep
- 6:31bringing up dreadful stories? God awful he's.
- 6:36Bring me out in hives in a minute.
- 6:38Well, Eddie, why don't you tell everybody just what we're here
- 6:40to talk about today? We're here to talk about the
- 6:45people with Lego hands that. So we're here to watch him.
- 6:48Lego Movie, obviously. No, I mean the Ice Warriors.
- 6:51That's right. Now who's chosen this one for
- 6:54us? Eddie's got his hand up now.
- 7:00That may be a slight indication of where feelings are around
- 7:03this, but I'm going to ask you both your initial thoughts on
- 7:06the Ice Warriors before we explore it together, Eddie.
- 7:11Well, so basically this doesn't just go for the Ice Warriors,
- 7:15but as a whole, Season 5 is one of my favorite classic seasons
- 7:18for I think I think it's my in my top five somewhere.
- 7:23Oh gosh, why it? I think it's really consistent
- 7:26run of stories. It's like even the ones I
- 7:28consider not as good as still like pretty decent.
- 7:31It's like run through two more Cybermen.
- 7:33That one's decent. Abominable Snowman I really
- 7:37like, but unfortunately Rob Valentine stole that one.
- 7:40Ice Warriors, we'll get around to it, don't worry.
- 7:41We'll get around to. It Ice Warriors.
- 7:43We're here right now. Then enemy, the world's OK.
- 7:47Banger, Yeah. Then Weather fee is pretty good
- 7:50but I prefer abominable snowmen honestly.
- 7:53Then Fury from the deep that's pretty good too.
- 7:56And then Wheel in Space is 1 I don't usually think much of, but
- 7:59I quite liked it when I watched it last time.
- 8:02I like Gemma Corwin in The Wheel in Space I.
- 8:04Almost thought you said you'd like Jenna Coleman.
- 8:07Oh, no. Bless you.
- 8:08Well, you misheard that, I'm afraid.
- 8:11And John, your initial thoughts on the Ice Warriors, please.
- 8:15I was. Going to say, you know what the
- 8:19best thing about Wheel in Space is?
- 8:20There's no Victoria in it. There's no.
- 8:24That is true. That is.
- 8:26True, I'm starting, I'm starting to think we should have had
- 8:28Fraser on this so we could have another Victoria defender.
- 8:30Look, you've got 6 bloody comments from Fraser to read
- 8:33out, all right? Six essays that you've written
- 8:35for us. Yeah, at least it's not 50. 100
- 8:39reasons to love the episode. No, if I'd have asked for 55,
- 8:43Eddie would have given us 55, You know that.
- 8:47So you asked him for all these? No, I said to him, I said, look,
- 8:50I know you wanted he wanted to do an Ice Warriors commentary
- 8:52and I said, well, I'm doing this one, so I won't do it again for
- 8:55some time, a couple of years at least.
- 8:57So if you want some input. And then I thought he maybe just
- 9:00leave me, you know, two line comments.
- 9:03Oh God no, the messages started coming in.
- 9:05When did Fraser ever keep himself to two lines?
- 9:09No, and wait, wait till he reads them out because he's trying to
- 9:12be witty and each one of them walks.
- 9:15I was actually showing them to my father earlier when when we
- 9:18just got back in and he. Was looking much of them.
- 9:22Yeah, he was like, oh God, how much is this?
- 9:27And this is me. I'm not known for being short.
- 9:29That's your that's your challenge at the end of Episode
- 9:321, then to read out the first one.
- 9:33All right. I'm sorry, John, you didn't
- 9:35actually get to say what you thought of this.
- 9:37Oh, God, it's, I mean, you know, when I was came into Bandam,
- 9:41it's we had, when was it the 20th?
- 9:44Yeah, it was the Radio Times 20th anniversary special
- 9:47celebration. You were told that this season
- 9:49was the Acme of Doctor Who. And I think it could well be
- 9:53when you're a kid because a lot of it is in that repetitive base
- 9:57under siege formats. But I've just kind of fallen out
- 10:03of love with that base under siege format completely over the
- 10:06years. It's my least favorite kind of
- 10:08type of whom. Well, yes, that's that's because
- 10:10you're just wrong and a body, you stupid bastard.
- 10:13Well ohh, he's coming in, firing this time but you not remember
- 10:19now. He is a child, isn't he?
- 10:21Like he is a young man and you're an old man Sex.
- 10:24Off 18. Eddie, I feel you may fall out
- 10:27of love with the base under siege format as you get older.
- 10:30Well, well, look at it this way. Pyramids Mars is my favorite
- 10:33story and that's basically basically Then the impossible
- 10:36Planet is my second favorite and that's base under siege so.
- 10:40Terror of the Vervoids obviously is a banger that's base under
- 10:43siege. You should have heard my mum's
- 10:45reaction when I when it's it says on my marathon sometimes I
- 10:49fell asleep during episodes and funnily enough I think on
- 10:52vervoids because I was tired, I fell asleep during all the
- 10:55vervoy stuff. Like I woke up right as the
- 10:57final part ended of the trial and vervoids in Yeah.
- 11:00So when I told her I was going to re watch all of Part 2 to 4
- 11:03she was like oh God no. Do I have to watch it all again?
- 11:07Bonnie Langford bouncing around in gym gear.
- 11:11Who Who would win in a scream, Bonnie Langford or Deborah
- 11:13Watling? Oh, probably Bonnie, I reckon.
- 11:17Oh, every time. Why don't I actually say
- 11:20Victoria in the Ice Warriors when she's in the ice cage?
- 11:22I mean, she brings down the whole mountain with us.
- 11:24What I mean, what about in Fury from the Deep?
- 11:26Well yes, yeah, but think about male in that bubble in time and
- 11:30Iran is she screamed for about 10 years didn't she they.
- 11:32Tried to give her Victoria stuff to act in fusion on the deeper
- 11:37Jesus. No, don't go there.
- 11:40So sorry everyone, my father doesn't have taste, but we will
- 11:43hopefully rectify this by the end of the episode.
- 11:48I don't think Brian Hales is great as a wrong to you, the
- 11:51doctor. Don't tell that to Gary.
- 11:52I'll kill you. Yeah, I know he will.
- 11:55Well, I mean, Terrence basically rewrote the seeds of Death,
- 11:57didn't he? And then did a.
- 11:58Yeah, back after his old Terra peloton.
- 12:00As well. But yeah, it's like the only
- 12:02Brian Hill story. I'm not particularly only Brian
- 12:05Hills. I'm not particularly fond of his
- 12:06Curse of Peloton. Oh wow, that's 'cause you're bad
- 12:09and wrong. Yeah.
- 12:11And then obviously, would it be, would it be right to state that
- 12:14the monster of Peloton's my favorite?
- 12:17Oh, Joe, I've grown quite fond of those years.
- 12:20You're insane, Davros. It gave us Ettis and Gebbic the
- 12:24miners, didn't it? The Haze.
- 12:26The Haze, Great in monsters and funnily.
- 12:28Enough it also it also has these amazing monsters in this story
- 12:31we're about to watch called the Ice Warriors.
- 12:33Well, that is true. Thank you for keeping us on
- 12:35topic there. I'm glad you're chaperoning this
- 12:37call. Yeah, well, for my part of the
- 12:40Ice Warriors, I really like it. I find this is more I feel like
- 12:45this is a historical story set in the future because unusually
- 12:50for the Trout and era, it's a character piece and there are
- 12:54some great characters in this and.
- 12:57What is it being Vic? Well, the dialogue in the future
- 13:00stories in the Trout and era, it's just really quite bad at
- 13:05times. Whereas I think this has got
- 13:07some really thoughtful characterisation, really
- 13:09thoughtful dialogue. I think Derek Martins direction
- 13:14is pretty great in this as well. Well to be fair, he is quite a
- 13:18good director anyway, because I believe he also did to be ahead
- 13:21from space as well. Also dude, the war machines And
- 13:25what's the other one? Planet.
- 13:27And the 10th planet. And frankly, I would say that
- 13:32out of all of those, the Ice Warriors, probably the weakest
- 13:35kissler. Oh wait, I got it wrong.
- 13:38He didn't do the war machines, did he?
- 13:39Ask Michael Ferguson. No.
- 13:40Among Fergusons, Yeah, Yeah. He did evil of the Daleks.
- 13:45Oh. Boy, OK, I might say either of
- 13:47the Darks are slightly weaker than the Ice Warriors, but
- 13:50that's. Certainly an opinion.
- 13:53Other than that, all bangers. Yeah, I I just want to say for
- 13:57season, but whenever we do the strictly Toby, he's mad.
- 14:00Listen to him. No, Toby said.
- 14:03He was the next generation recently when he read out a
- 14:05comment for us strictly and said listen to him, he knows what
- 14:07he's talking about. Well, yeah, but then did you see
- 14:09his face when I said hungry? I think cold bloods.
- 14:12Good. Well, yes, if looks could kill
- 14:14you would be a splat on the wall.
- 14:16Yeah. Now.
- 14:18Yeah. But I do.
- 14:20I think he's got an impossible task.
- 14:21He has literally got to realise a an Arctic location in a studio
- 14:27and I think with a mixture of stock footage, some great sets
- 14:30and some really clever direction, he pulls it off
- 14:33really well. You've got a great Dudley
- 14:34Simpson score as well going. I think we're going to sing that
- 14:37as we go. It's brilliant.
- 14:39I'm well, I'm not because I'm because I am more Yes, you are
- 14:43these two. You don't want to sing, Eddie.
- 14:46Come on. It's the most joyful things you
- 14:47can do. If I'm singing a long twenty
- 14:54thing, it'll be on my walk to culture and I've actually got
- 14:56music on. It's so weird.
- 14:59That's chase sequence with Victoria in episode 4.
- 15:01I mean, Dudley just goes mad, doesn't he?
- 15:03It's like. Hilarious and.
- 15:05The woman's sort of going. I prefer that.
- 15:12I prefer that to the Sea Devil score any day.
- 15:15That's not really a score though, is it?
- 15:17That's somebody abusing a machine.
- 15:20Magnificent. Yeah, unfortunately I have to
- 15:23hear my father's ear. I have to hear my father's ear
- 15:26bleeding noises every time he. Mentions it.
- 15:30You don't play that album, Eddie.
- 15:34Well, sympathies. I can't imagine anyone listening
- 15:37to that for fun. My years have hit already from
- 15:40him. Well, look, we've got 6 episodes
- 15:44to talk through. We're doing 3 today.
- 15:46Should we get going and see what this remarkable story has to
- 15:50offer? Sorry I've got I've got my iPad
- 15:53has auto lock on because of an incident with my phone recently
- 15:56so I just had to turn it back on.
- 15:57What happened with your phone or am I?
- 15:59Basically, well basically it's like I I forgot to have screen
- 16:03lock on my phone. So like images are burning into
- 16:05the screen now if I leave them on too long.
- 16:08Oh no. It's like, I think earlier when
- 16:11I was doing something else when I was chatting to you, I think
- 16:14that burnt in. If I was just on, like if I was
- 16:18just on another app like YouTube or something, I would just see
- 16:20Joe Ford in the top. Oh.
- 16:23The horror. Oh well, look, somebody, well,
- 16:29somebody please count us in. I think my father would rather
- 16:33count himself out. Well, tough.
- 16:35He's got to do it. You drag me in.
- 16:37That's right. But come on, let's all do the
- 16:40music. I'd start it only it's only in
- 16:42the first episode. It's.
- 16:43All right, I've already disinherited you for the cold.
- 16:46Yeah, it's a couple of the 100 beers.
- 16:49You remember, though, you're on two?
- 16:50No, you remember, Eddie, I did insist that if we were going to
- 16:53do this one next time we've got to do one that your father
- 16:56likes. Oh yes, we have.
- 16:58We have picked one that he what are.
- 16:59We doing next? Let's do that now quickly.
- 17:01I'm sorry or no? Unfortunately, it will be a
- 17:04chore for us. It will be heaven sent.
- 17:07Christ. Oh, both Muppets power.
- 17:12Come on. I can deal with Hell Band, but
- 17:15haven't you? Will be like us.
- 17:19Watch. I would rather watch a paint
- 17:22wall dry for about 3 days straight and eat an island of
- 17:25garbage with my teeth manually. Even watch hasn't sent to.
- 17:28Me too, Eddie. I'll tell you what.
- 17:30Because you do it soon. How about your dad does the
- 17:33commentary? Yeah.
- 17:34And you and me will do your own work or something while it's
- 17:37home. Something about that.
- 17:39Interesting. OK.
- 17:41So yeah, we're currently. Doing Doctor Who in in college
- 17:44as well for his work. So yeah, you're on.
- 17:46I did make the promise. I did make the promise, so we
- 17:49will endure that, but you have to endure this first deal.
- 17:54I'll I'll live with it. I don't think he will.
- 17:58Can someone count us in in block capitals like we get on the
- 18:02titles please? OK.
- 18:09Go. That's very dramatic, Eddie, and
- 18:12may I say. I love this title sequence as
- 18:15well. Well, it's very it's quite
- 18:18exotic, isn't it? I can't quite figure out what
- 18:20it's supposed. It's supposed to be the Time
- 18:21Vortex? Probably because that's what we
- 18:23see in nursing. Child, I think they all they're
- 18:25all meant to be in Time Vortex aren't.
- 18:27They well aside. Aside, obviously, the Davidson
- 18:30one. It's very disturbing the way
- 18:32Patrick Troughton's fights. Here we are.
- 18:41I'm sorry everyone, I accidentally brought two more
- 18:43children on the podcast. Oh my God, hang on, is that a
- 18:49stalagmite or a stalagmite? Or is it just an icicle?
- 18:52It's just an. Icicle.
- 18:54It's a piece of ice. Now come on though, come on,
- 18:56John. Admit it's quite fun.
- 18:58They're doing something different with the titles.
- 19:00Oh. God yeah, I love it when they
- 19:02met. Series 7 War.
- 19:04Games there's a There's a mark of a lack of quality straight
- 19:08away. Brian Hales.
- 19:11Terroristics said he was the loveliest man.
- 19:13He's probably, he's a lovely man, but it doesn't mean he's
- 19:16any good one. It's not even part, it's not
- 19:19episode, it's just one. It doesn't need a part, it
- 19:22doesn't need an episode. It's just that good one because
- 19:26you know why it considers itself the only Doctor Who story.
- 19:29Alarm. Blaze It has too much
- 19:32confidence. Now listen, can't just say the
- 19:34music here with the piano going, it's just great.
- 19:40Hard to remember this without sound.
- 19:44See. This is the one thing I do like
- 19:46about. It's that that it's got a
- 19:48contrast about scientific stuff and then it's got a basic view
- 19:51of that and the house wood panel in the Vic.
- 19:53Absolutely perfect Doctor Who, a mixture of the old and the new.
- 19:58And there's something here that none of us have stated yet that
- 20:00we've got Wallace from Wallace and Gromit here.
- 20:03Oh yes? What's his name?
- 20:04Peter Salas. Peter Salas.
- 20:07Yeah. Now it'll save the day.
- 20:09It'll save the day with some Bensley Dale cheese.
- 20:11What year is this setting? Does anyone know?
- 20:143000 was it. I think it's 3000.
- 20:17Top of my head, a 1967 studio. I was going to sing Busted then
- 20:23I've been to the year 3000. Everybody's wearing ridiculous
- 20:29clothes. I mean, I'm very Doctor Who.
- 20:32Oh, I'm pleased we're not living in free fascinative.
- 20:34We've got to wear those ridiculous wackaday costumes.
- 20:38Frank Well, frankly, if anything, if sexy here is
- 20:41anything to go off, I'm glad. I'm glad I'm not wearing
- 20:43anything from the house. Can anyone do an accurate
- 20:47impression of the computer? It's got a very great voice.
- 20:53Isn't it the? Isn't it Roy Skelton voicing
- 20:55this? I don't know.
- 20:58No, I can't do it. Are finally been beaten by
- 21:02something. Oh, unlucky.
- 21:05I don't know now what do you think then of this whole, you
- 21:09know, all of humanity is slaves to the great computer?
- 21:13It's basically the Internet now, isn't?
- 21:16It it's like they want to choose the war machines again as well.
- 21:20Yeah, but in the war machines he's trying to take over here in
- 21:23the future, that machine is governing everything.
- 21:27I think it's just wolf hands. Oh, you think this is what Wotan
- 21:30got up to after the war machines?
- 21:32Yeah, I thought they could have tied it in.
- 21:35Fine, thanks. He has basically flashed, but
- 21:36he's a moving mountain of ice. Come on, that's a great line.
- 21:40Yeah, but it's not. But the best line of the ice
- 21:43wars is in the book, and the next year's spring never came.
- 21:48That approximation, that's poetry, that that was the ice
- 21:53war is that I prefer to be honest, because you don't have
- 21:55to face with them taking half an hour to say every frigging line.
- 21:59So it's the whole of the Earth, like like, like I see now, the
- 22:04whole of the Earth. It's like an Ice Age again,
- 22:06probably. This is the barriers and they're
- 22:09holding it back here, so I don't know about Europe.
- 22:15So it wants to. It literally wants to consume
- 22:18the whole continent. Yes, and.
- 22:20There's a planetary threat, yeah.
- 22:22And. And that's the.
- 22:24Idea. Oh, they found something.
- 22:26It it is quite a clever kind of thing to come play into the
- 22:30climate change thing, because this is the very.
- 22:32The one they found here. Before the green green kind of
- 22:35movement took out good. Grief.
- 22:38That looks like a fake green movie.
- 22:39Ice. Yeah.
- 22:41You know, it might almost be like this warrior in there might
- 22:44be an ice warrior. Now, I don't care what you say,
- 22:47John, All this stuff on film in the ice caves is gorgeous.
- 22:52I just think it looks beauty. I genuinely believe they're out
- 22:56on a mountain there. Yeah, particularly for the 60s
- 23:01studios because let's face it, they don't have a great track
- 23:04record of being convincing to modernize.
- 23:06You know, it obviously played better back in the day when all
- 23:10TV was like this essentially. Or a backdrop when ITC.
- 23:15What occurred then? The Ice Warriors came down in
- 23:18their spaceship and then came out and then got frozen.
- 23:22Yeah, because they couldn't. Yes, I.
- 23:24Think it's because they couldn't go over to Lego and get their
- 23:27commissions for them to be Lego figures.
- 23:30They would make great Lego figures, wouldn't they?
- 23:33Imagine if you could have like an Ice Warrior set for Lego.
- 23:37Unfortunately we had to get Amy Pond in multiple sets so.
- 23:41No. Well, paint a green, Eddie.
- 23:43Paint a green and put a helmet on her head and then just say
- 23:46she's an ice warrior. Well, maybe she'll look more
- 23:48beautiful than according to you. Well, absolutely.
- 23:51Oh Eddie, this bit of business now when the TARDIS arrives on
- 23:54the side, you must love all this.
- 23:56Oh yeah, when it lands like wrong way up in the snow.
- 23:59It slides down the mountain. It's so funny.
- 24:03Here we go. You're struggling to hate this
- 24:10at the moment, John, aren't you? Yes, but it's all right.
- 24:14In a minute I'll be up there. He'll be fine because look who's
- 24:18coming to play. Now.
- 24:22Patrick dragon great he see this is he's the redeeming feature of
- 24:27this. He's making so much out of so
- 24:30little with these kind of mid these middle source.
- 24:33I love him as a doctor, but I just can't love this season.
- 24:37Did they dig a hole there? Because it really felt as if he
- 24:39fell. Here she is quite.
- 24:42Oh, there she, now it. Looks like a baby in this part.
- 24:45I just want to say outright, right, Because I.
- 24:47Really. Dislike Victoria but and it's a
- 24:52big butt, but I think the chemistry between Trout and
- 24:56Watling and Heinz is really good.
- 24:58So I think when they're all together there's great
- 25:01chemistry. It's just when she's on her own
- 25:04and sniveling and screaming and getting tripped over and all.
- 25:08Oh please, that's my issue. But then then, you know, you get
- 25:12Wendy Perry next year and the chemistry goes up and ups to my
- 25:15mind as well. No, it doesn't.
- 25:16Because she can. She can actually act.
- 25:20Oh, I would like a coat like that.
- 25:21You know that Yeti coat. I want the coat too.
- 25:24Yeah. I saw a figure of this at
- 25:26Hooverville but it was like £60. Should we get fabulous Yeti fur
- 25:30coats? I do, and then the next
- 25:32convention will sort of swish about the place as yetis.
- 25:35Oh yeah. OK, we'll do it frankly.
- 25:36I'm still loving Yeti cosmos, unfortunately it's too expensive
- 25:40it. Looks so.
- 25:41And the winter's coming, you know.
- 25:42So have you got a nice fur coat like that for the winter?
- 25:45Well, now what is that? I would like a coat like that.
- 25:51Is that backdrop supposed to be the front of the house?
- 25:53I think it is, yeah. It's terrible, isn't it?
- 25:57Even by Peter Salas There are. Oh yes, Wallace, it's.
- 26:04Probably going off to find grommet or something.
- 26:06What's the best Wallace and Gromit story?
- 26:08Well the only on, well the owner I remember watching is the one
- 26:11at Christmas because obviously all the other ones came out in
- 26:142008 and before so. It's the wrong trousers.
- 26:19The wrong trousers. Yes, that's wonderful.
- 26:22I. Love that.
- 26:23Sorry, the Penguin with the rubber glove on its head.
- 26:25The greatest building you'll ever see in anything.
- 26:27Oh there he is. Wasn't that evil Penguin back
- 26:30though at Christmas? Yeah, fellas, McGraw.
- 26:33He is the most evil character, never mind Doctor Who villains.
- 26:36That Penguin is the most evil character in all of television.
- 26:39The look in those. Eyes.
- 26:41It's terrifying. Doesn't that toy scare you?
- 26:44Ready that Penguin? Oh yes, it does, every day,
- 26:48because it sounds conveniently like my father a lot of the
- 26:51time. Whilst you're taking it around
- 26:53with you now it's plotting the destruction of the Earth.
- 26:56It probably. Is.
- 26:58All Penguins do, yeah. Now, Peter Butterworth.
- 27:02Butterworth. Is that right?
- 27:04Yeah. That was Madly Monk.
- 27:06No Barkworth, is it? Barkworth.
- 27:09Yes, yeah, Peter Barkworth, I think that is an extraordinary
- 27:12performance he gives in this. I absolutely believe in that
- 27:16game. It has to be, because it's that
- 27:18base commander role is generally just repested and terrible and
- 27:23the same damn thing over and over again.
- 27:25Unfortunately my father has no taste to everyone, so you may
- 27:28need to bear with whilst we convince him.
- 27:30Well, I'll start then because because I think he's.
- 27:33Way up above Robson in theory. Oh, for sure.
- 27:36But like he does, he literally plays on the fact that he's,
- 27:40he's disabled, doesn't he? So he's hobbling about the place
- 27:43and fainting, you know, but he's also a bit anxious, a bit
- 27:47petulant and, and snappy. And I don't know, I just, I, I
- 27:50really believe he's a base commander under pressure.
- 27:55Yeah, yeah. I mean, to me, the one thing
- 27:58while I'm not particularly enjoying this one, it's so well
- 28:01cast. Yeah, in his slowest wanted, I
- 28:04think the role in the plane makers.
- 28:06This is where we meet Toby just as this kind this encyclopedia.
- 28:10But yeah, these these are really good kind of 60s character
- 28:14actors. It's exactly you should be
- 28:16casting Doctor Who do. You know, there's an incredibly
- 28:19racist moment in a minute where they say, oh, you'll be sent to
- 28:23the labour camps in Africa or something, and Victoria goes, Oh
- 28:26no, not Africa, Like it's the worst place in the world.
- 28:32She's racist as well. To be fair, she was from the
- 28:351860s when that was still accepted.
- 28:38She ain't from the 60s, she's from the Victorian times 18.
- 28:42Sorry, sorry. I mean back then off now.
- 28:45Back then the government didn't even like the working class, so
- 28:48it's like, what were they going to do if they like people of
- 28:51colour? Yeah, that's true.
- 28:54I just don't like hearing it really, because you know, things
- 28:56are dodgy right now. I mean currently, currently I'm
- 29:00doing a course in history on 1890 to 1990.
- 29:03So learning all this here, it's like, oh they don't care for all
- 29:08the damn working class. I'm sure you're learning about
- 29:13some horrors within that period. We get to learn about
- 29:16entertainment as well. So what may come up in the 60s?
- 29:20OK, such as visions of the future like this.
- 29:24Yes. I mean, come on, look at trout
- 29:28on here running around the room, turning the dials, saving the
- 29:31day right in the episode one this.
- 29:36I think this. He has energy to everything.
- 29:38Unfortunately we get moves where he can't add energy later on.
- 29:45I think him adding energy is probably one of the reasons he's
- 29:47my favorite doctor. Why is he your favorite dog
- 29:50apart from that though? Because I feel like I see a lot
- 29:53of my own personality traits in him as well.
- 29:57And what? Fiercely intelligent Eddie
- 30:00always outwitting the other side.
- 30:03Well, I'm always outwitting my father.
- 30:04I know you are, yeah. And then and then obviously at
- 30:08times it, he's obviously very silly, just like myself.
- 30:12That's right. Well, he's your Jamie, of
- 30:14course. So what you're saying he's a
- 30:16cheeky short ass just. Like you.
- 30:18Oh, no, that makes me Victoria. Oh, no.
- 30:23Oh please, I can't do this anymore.
- 30:25Don't, don't, don't say that my father would be Jamie.
- 30:28That would be an insult to phrase her.
- 30:32Why don't do that? No, John, don't do that.
- 30:38Turns it to David Tennant for a second there.
- 30:41I, I love Troutham because I like that switch between the
- 30:46comic and the Sinner stuff that he does so well and just how
- 30:50everyone always underestimates him.
- 30:53And yeah, he's, he's the cleverest man in the room, but
- 30:56he comes across like he's the most foolish man in the room.
- 31:00It's such a great turn, I think, as the Doctor.
- 31:02Yeah, I mean, when I was what's it?
- 31:04I saw him the croutons on Five Faces season and he was my
- 31:09favorite doctor from that alone. Back in your back in the days of
- 31:13old. Back when.
- 31:15We had jokes. All we had was.
- 31:18Yes, back in my day, young man. Not Joe was still a baby by that
- 31:23point as well. So you being.
- 31:25Conscious he might not even be born.
- 31:27No, eight years. In. 1981.
- 31:30I believe. I was 1 then just born.
- 31:35But my father, my father was about like 7 or so, so he was
- 31:41conscious enough to remember it. Now, what do you think of this
- 31:44synergy that this man here, this sort of tubby man that he's
- 31:47talking to, he coined the name Ice Warrior.
- 31:51He goes. There's a paper Ice Warrior,
- 31:53isn't he? Then then all of a sudden they
- 31:57just call themselves Ice Warriors later on.
- 31:59Well, and stuff like Waters of Mars, like yeah, the Ice Warrior
- 32:03culture and all of this, why don't make no sense.
- 32:06Yeah, despite the fact that this is set like 1000 years ahead of
- 32:09it. Yeah.
- 32:11Continuity is. And it's and it's a bunch who
- 32:13have no contact with the rest of their race after this.
- 32:17Oh, I love this bloke. Angus, Lenny, anything he's in,
- 32:20I just love. Glorious.
- 32:22And it's like he's. Crossroads fella, isn't he Angus
- 32:25And he's in Yes, I. Can can I just say I don't I
- 32:30think even see to death is set after the water Mars because
- 32:32it's at like 100 years in the future from 60s.
- 32:35Well, yeah, because they've got the team at things then, haven't
- 32:38they? They could have just popped to
- 32:39Miles in no time. So the Ice Warriors hadn't even
- 32:41reappeared in the modern show yet, and all of a sudden they
- 32:43just know on human databases. Yeah, now you're not one of
- 32:49those fans, are you? That's got all the continuities
- 32:51got to add up. No, I'm not.
- 32:53I'm not one who debates the unit dated controversy.
- 32:56You do me a. Favor.
- 32:57Yes, he's Lancey. Yes, he's Lance Parkin, Junior
- 32:59what can. I say you do me a favour then
- 33:03please and talk to my other half.
- 33:04He's obsessed with everything fitting into a big jigsaw
- 33:06puzzle. It's just so strange.
- 33:09I said just enjoy it, enjoy the stories.
- 33:11Yeah, that's what I do. Oh my God, look at this.
- 33:15A fucking mountain's about to fall on him.
- 33:17If if only Karen Gill have been there.
- 33:20Oh, no. Oh, please.
- 33:21You're talking about language. I mean, look at that.
- 33:24That's a fine bit of polystyrene that they've thrown all over
- 33:26that man, wouldn't you say it is.
- 33:28Glorious dust. Yeah, all that.
- 33:31See, this is actually really well done.
- 33:33I don't despite. That you know, I only noticed
- 33:36you saying kind things so far. You know, maybe we might have.
- 33:40Convinced it starts off fine. It is.
- 33:42The first episode of every Doctor Who story is probably the
- 33:45best one because you get the idea.
- 33:50There are exceptions to every rule.
- 33:53Don't you worry, because when later in the story, when you get
- 33:56desperate for nice things to say, I have bought my ukulele,
- 33:59which I have bought on Saturday. Planning on singing you Ice
- 34:04Warrior songs all right. Was that the one you posted?
- 34:08Photo I'm glad you bought that to play, not the bloody well
- 34:10mannered war. Victoria, why are you such an
- 34:15annoying cow? You know, stuff like that.
- 34:19Singing my song. Come on there.
- 34:23We. Go you should, you should get,
- 34:25you should get back with whoever makes the hamster intro and just
- 34:27make that in the studio. You don't want me singing Jesus
- 34:31Christ. You've heard some of it today.
- 34:35Oh, this is the bit, isn't it? Where they talk about the
- 34:38glaciers coming and the base holding them back.
- 34:42And they just mentioned to bet as well.
- 34:44Reference to the last story, The amazing Abominable Snowman.
- 34:48I mean some surprise you like this really, given this comes
- 34:51after your favorite. Yeah, and as well, so I I was
- 34:57also recently looking up the day since the Yeti last had their
- 35:00own individual stories. Obviously they appear in the
- 35:02Five Doctors which makes no sense, but their last full story
- 35:07recently just hit 21,000 days ago.
- 35:10Really. Oh.
- 35:14My word. That's a very specific figure,
- 35:17you know. Yeah, I, I was looking it up as
- 35:20well. So it's a bit more than that
- 35:22now. It's about I think probably a
- 35:25week on since it was the 6th September that it turned 21,000
- 35:29days. Since you're quite good at this
- 35:31sort of thing, how many days has it been since I last talked?
- 35:34Since on Hampstead with blunt pen knife?
- 35:36Oh. Well, actually.
- 35:41Was first absolutely good. What?
- 35:43Actually no. When you all voted Empress of
- 35:46Mars 3 on 10B, that's when you were talking sense.
- 35:49Oh yeah. Oh, Ice Warriors, of course.
- 35:53And then when you all voted the demons through, that was talking
- 35:56sentence. So Eddie, if I was to add Ice
- 35:59Warriors to Midnight, would you then deem it a classic?
- 36:03What? Well, it depends, because I
- 36:08like, I like basically every Ice Warrior story.
- 36:11Sort of like Chris Peldon. I'm not as big but I like every
- 36:14Ice Warrior story and that includes cold walk is my iPad
- 36:18and computer background is a shot of the ice warrior from
- 36:20Cold War like in the blue lighting?
- 36:23Oh, and they nearly drown Clara as well, which is quite
- 36:25marvelous. Well, I mean, one nearly kills
- 36:28it so. Yeah, Oh, wonderful.
- 36:31And This is why you love the Ice Warriors.
- 36:35If only I've been Karen Gillan there.
- 36:37I've got an unusually serious question for you, Eddie, OK?
- 36:41You and. Sirius that's right.
- 36:43I'm going to bring down my voice to a serious level now.
- 36:47No, this is 6 episodes long. Yeah, it's not a fast moving
- 36:53story. It is dialogue heavy and you are
- 36:58a young man that's been brought up on modern television, which
- 37:02moves very fast, is much more cinematic.
- 37:05So what is it about this? Like, Like you really like this
- 37:09and I'm assuming you don't mind the pace?
- 37:12I have been brought up on losing modern television, but at the
- 37:15same time it's like I've been in, I've been in the room enough
- 37:18when they've been playing sort of classic stuff and I've what
- 37:21obviously watched all the classic coup.
- 37:22So by the by the time I was at the ice.
- 37:25So sorry. By the time I was at the Ice
- 37:28Warriors, I done the darts master plan.
- 37:29I think I could handle anything. So the pace doesn't bother you
- 37:32at all, no. No, Pace doesn't usually bother.
- 37:36Yeah, it's like, sadly, I have to sit in the room every week
- 37:38when he's playing like old Top of the Pops and whatnot.
- 37:41Oh yeah. But I've just been introduced to
- 37:43that by my other half. But so.
- 37:45So what is it here then? Is it because you like the
- 37:48monsters? You like the characters?
- 37:50I do really like the monsters. So yes you do know for his
- 37:56back-to-back it's like 2 banger monsters I think.
- 38:00I think one point I did a list of my five favorite multi
- 38:03designs and they were up there. The only other one I can
- 38:08Remember Remember off the top of my head being in there is the
- 38:11Marshman. Oh I love the Marshman.
- 38:14Got that silhouette shot when they come out of the water.
- 38:17In Part 1. When that happened, I knew I was
- 38:20hooked on the story. And at what point did you know
- 38:24you was hooked on Doctor Who? Basically from the second I was
- 38:28born. Yeah, you didn't have a hope
- 38:31really, did you? Well, no.
- 38:33I was in. I was in the presence of my
- 38:35mother and father. I had no chance.
- 38:37Yeah. It's like I can't be asked how
- 38:39did I discover Doctor whoever, because my answer would be I was
- 38:42born in. I was born to Carolyn and John
- 38:44Arnold. Wow, that's a good answer.
- 38:48Yeah, let's. Talk about any of this.
- 38:50Story yet? Yeah.
- 38:55So eventually I'm going to be after giving all this stuff to
- 38:57sigh on live even possible things as.
- 38:58Well, well, yes, I mean you said about it was going to get in
- 39:01touch, you know. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 39:04I don't know how I'm going to say.
- 39:05I was saying she's Doctor Who. Oh, I was born into a family of
- 39:08Doctor Who lovers. And you could start it
- 39:10traumatized by two Doctor Who fans, something like that, you
- 39:14know, and. I and I instantly wanted to get.
- 39:16I instantly wanted to. You know, when he was, you know,
- 39:19few months old, he got see, you know, season series 4.
- 39:25What more do you want? Come on, Tennant Tate.
- 39:29OK. Cribbins.
- 39:31Peak Doctor Who cribbins. What a great time to be alive
- 39:35that was. Unfortunately, I don't remember
- 39:37any of it. Not well, no, but you can
- 39:40rewatch it. You've seen it enough since.
- 39:42You know, I'm going to make a suggestion.
- 39:43You know that if you find the bloody great creature in the ice
- 39:48in it sort of Viking helmet, you're carrying a gun.
- 39:52Don't take cut out the ice and bring it into the base.
- 39:58This is it. And then set it to four.
- 40:00I mean, no, it's great for the drama because then there's a
- 40:02great monster going about the place.
- 40:04Wonderful. But like, logically it doesn't
- 40:07make a lot of sense. No, This is why I don't like
- 40:09Bradley held his storage and Peter Brian doing the script.
- 40:12I think he isn't the best script.
- 40:15He's as bad good as script address.
- 40:16He's a director. It's just you can see why Brian
- 40:20Hales only kind of shines under under Terrance.
- 40:23He's got somebody who's got the structure and he.
- 40:26Needs are you? Are you implying he's not
- 40:27shining here and he didn't shine with Celestial Toy Maker?
- 40:31Well, I think it's less your toy maker.
- 40:33Just a bit if he's not seen the animation the.
- 40:36Animation is amazing. It's wonderful, but it is
- 40:39propping up a pretty lousy script.
- 40:42Yeah. Well you I will say you can't
- 40:46handle the. AdWords you.
- 40:47Should see the the background scene of you know how they came
- 40:51to do that is really nice and done here because it allows
- 40:53Trenton to do it to give a load of energy to it.
- 40:56This is. So funny look they bring down a
- 40:59screen so they can't see the ice warrior while he's melting.
- 41:02I would keep a good eye on that bloody thing while he's melting.
- 41:08More ice melting. Oh, listen to Jamie's rampant
- 41:11sexism now. Oh, Victoria.
- 41:12Yeah, do you fancy wearing one of those skirts that the girls
- 41:15are wearing? He's no.
- 41:17Actress not thinking about it? Well, no.
- 41:19And they say Moffett brought sex into Doctor.
- 41:22Yeah. If actor said that to Teiger,
- 41:24did he? He'd get a slap around the face.
- 41:26I said no, I think, I think Tegan wouldn't even do that.
- 41:29I think Tegan would. I think Tegan would.
- 41:31Didn't see take him back to the Fraser.
- 41:33I think you're. Probably.
- 41:34Why would she need a slap? Or she just stay into it.
- 41:38Lick your hands. Amazing design.
- 41:41Look at this yeah part. Look at how hairy his face is.
- 41:45And then it ends. They literally changed the
- 41:47design between episode 1 and episode 2, don't they?
- 41:51Yeah, and his mouth is more visible here too.
- 41:54I mean, I don't know why they gave him so much hair around his
- 41:57mouth. It's very old.
- 41:59To be honest, I was enjoying that so much I didn't even
- 42:00realize it was already the end. I think that's a superb episode
- 42:041. It sets up the scenario
- 42:06dramatically. It's beautifully realized, the
- 42:09regulars are fun. It's got a Ruddy great monster
- 42:12in it that's come alive at the end.
- 42:14What is there to complain about there, John?
- 42:17There is much a complaint in the first episode, but you see,
- 42:20we've already got. Over it.
- 42:21If we just keep it up like this for the rest of the story,
- 42:24you'll get them to love it. Yeah, don't worry, we'll wear
- 42:27him down eventually. Anyway.
- 42:30You know what might help Eddie? Is it the comment from Fraser?
- 42:33Yeah. That might help actually.
- 42:35Hold on, let me just get rid of autoplay a second.
- 42:39So now first comment from Fraser Gregory himself.
- 42:44The 2nd Doctor has written really well.
- 42:46Well, I'm a genius, he proclaims in the inferior remake Clash
- 42:50sequel to this the following year.
- 42:51But here he gets to prove it, solving the problem with the
- 42:54ionizer from a few readouts and deducting a climate catastrophe
- 42:57in 45 seconds. But he never loses that impish
- 43:00charm, doing his thumbs on the floor and picking a pricking the
- 43:04pomposity of the machines to get a glass of water.
- 43:06It's an exceptionally good showing.
- 43:10I mean, I don't think we can argue with that, right?
- 43:12So one of Fraser's points is Patrick Trout, and as the
- 43:14Doctor, and we've all extolled the virtues of this man in this
- 43:18episode. You know, I think if I ever need
- 43:20a lawyer in court, I'll be calling up Fraser because he'll
- 43:22be able to give an argument so long that all the rest will fall
- 43:24asleep. They'll say by the end they'll
- 43:27go, yeah, you're not guilty. Yes, just shut him up.
- 43:31Just and and. Then he'll start on them with
- 43:37his list of the 60 greatest stories.
- 43:39I mean, I really enjoyed that first episode.
- 43:42Eddie, did you? Oh yeah.
- 43:44John. He was tolerable.
- 43:47Tolerable. Good grief.
- 43:49I think we're doing all right, Eddie, so far.
- 43:51Yeah, there's, there's not much Ice Warriors.
- 43:55It's not much of Varga the Ice Warrior.
- 43:58What Varga plant the ice Warrior?
- 44:01Excuse me, Lucy's got a name. Very often these villains don't
- 44:04have names at all. Oh well, maybe you get along
- 44:07with the Varga plants. Oh, I love the Varg plants.
- 44:11They're made out of cold wall, didn't they?
- 44:15Well. Of course he'd love them because
- 44:17they're long, tall things. I beg your pardon.
- 44:20Good growth. I've heard enough commentary
- 44:23from you to know what you're into, yeah.
- 44:26Excuse me, I don't usually get things of this nature from
- 44:34children. OK, No, you're right.
- 44:37You are right, John. What have you done to this
- 44:40child? I'd let him listen to.
- 44:47This is all your fault. Social services rain tomorrow.
- 44:51I've only listened to two commentaries anyway.
- 44:53No, to be fair, I think if social services are coming
- 44:56around there might have been the episode where I'll suggest we
- 44:58gas all the children from the Moffit era.
- 45:02I mentioned about the crack. Yeah, you did.
- 45:06Oh boy, oh boy. Well, let's see what other
- 45:09delights we can find in the Ice Warriors.
- 45:12Should we jump in and watch episode 2?
- 45:15Yes, for the dramatic cliffhanger, I suppose.
- 45:20I'll allow it there.
