How Nick Mangold’s Humanity and Tragic Passing Can Bring About Kidney Disease Awareness On OneLegUpAlex Adapts 10-28-25 ft. Pags Perspective · OneLegUpAlex Sports

• 0:01
Speaker 1: Here's your host, Alex Garrett.
• 0:06
Speaker 2: Well, I've been meaning to cover the tragic and sad
• 0:09
Speaker 2: passing of Nick Mangold Jets Ring of Honor Jets Center,
• 0:15
Speaker 2: and I didn't realize this all the way up until
• 0:17
Speaker 2: the twenty sixteen season, but his story is starting to
• 0:23
Speaker 2: remind me a bit of Garrig and Als. A couple
• 0:28
Speaker 2: of weeks ago, Mangold wrote, and as you know, he
• 0:31
Speaker 2: passed away from kidney disease, and it was waiting a transplant,
• 0:35
Speaker 2: and I guess the transplanters did not.
• 0:39
Speaker 3: Surface or come about. He also was on dialysis, and
• 0:48
Speaker 3: he wrote this a couple of weeks ago.
• 0:51
Speaker 2: In two thousand and six, I was diagnosed with a
• 0:53
Speaker 2: genetic defect that has led to chronic kidney disease. I'm
• 0:57
Speaker 2: undergoing dialysis as we look for a kidney transplant. I
• 1:00
Speaker 2: always knew this day would come, but I thought I
• 1:02
Speaker 2: would have more time. But in two thousand and six,
• 1:06
Speaker 2: at the same time he was diagnosed with US.
• 1:07
Speaker 3: You know what he did. He took the field as
• 1:10
  Speaker 3: the Jets.
• 1:10
Speaker 2: Center and snapped the ball from six until late twenty
• 1:16
Speaker 2: sixteen season, the Jets right every Jets quarterback until late
• 1:20
Speaker 2: in twenty sixteen. Also, this is why you go to
• 1:23
Speaker 2: Woodbridge events, because he was actually at Woodbridge last year
• 1:27
Speaker 2: for a Jets watch party and I wanted to go.
• 1:30
Speaker 3: It just did not happen. But you know, time is fragile.
• 1:36
Speaker 3: Get to meet these guys.
• 1:38
  Speaker 2: And.
• 1:42
Speaker 3: For me, it's just it's very similar.
• 1:45
Speaker 2: I mean, he had this genetic diagnosis in two thousand
• 1:48
Speaker 2: and six and snapped the ball every time out and
• 1:56
Speaker 2: starting playing every Jets game from six until twenty eleven,
• 1:59
Speaker 2: eight nine games, including seven playoff games until hy And
• 2:02
Speaker 2: goes spraying in twenty eleven against Saxonville Asylum for the
• 2:06
Speaker 2: first time as a pro. He also made a few
• 2:08
Speaker 2: Pro Bowls if I'm not mistaken, right, Ryan, Oh, he did.
• 2:11
Speaker 4: Yeah, absolutely, multiple time Pro bowler and doing all that
• 2:16
Speaker 4: with the condition that he had. I mean, it just
• 2:19
Speaker 4: makes his story even better but also more tragic.
• 2:23
Speaker 3: And also more inspired.
• 2:24
Speaker 2: I mean, he went through all of that, and I
• 2:28
Speaker 2: don't think he was doing Dallas while he played. He
• 2:29
Speaker 2: might have, but he was obviously on DALYs now. But
• 2:33
Speaker 2: to go through and have this kidney issue his whole
• 2:37
Speaker 2: playing career and not really talk about it, you know,
• 2:40
Speaker 2: he didn't make a big deal about it. It wasn't
• 2:42
Speaker 2: really a storyline every time he snapped the ball as
• 2:44
Speaker 2: far as I could tell.
• 2:46
Speaker 4: Yeah, Like, he didn't make it his entire personality trade
• 2:48
Speaker 4: because really, in the end, what he wanted to focus
• 2:50
Speaker 4: on was just bring the Jets winning football and for
• 2:53
Speaker 4: a good chunk of his career. I mean, that's exactly
• 2:56
Speaker 4: what he did, checking guys like Pennington, far Sanchez and Look.
• 3:00
Speaker 4: I could go on about how bad the Jets QB
• 3:03
Speaker 4: room was, but that really isn't the point of your
• 3:08
  Speaker 4: show today, Alex.
• 3:09
Speaker 1: The point is Mangoled.
• 3:12
Speaker 4: Hell of a football player and even better as a
• 3:15
  Speaker 4: man pulls playing.
• 3:16
Speaker 2: Days, and it's about bringing awareness because kidneys are nothing
• 3:20
Speaker 2: to mess with. And when I found out about that,
• 3:24
Speaker 2: it struck a chord personally because I have one. And
• 3:37
Speaker 2: the fact that Mangold has worked so damn hard up
• 3:41
Speaker 2: until his passing to maintain his kidney function is admirable.
• 3:47
Speaker 3: It is admirable how.
• 3:48
Speaker 2: He continued even after his playing days to maintain and
• 3:53
Speaker 2: fight this fight with the kidney disease through dialysis and
• 3:57
Speaker 2: dialysis is not easy. I know it's painful, and it's
• 4:01
Speaker 2: having won myself, it's very, very fearful.
• 4:03
Speaker 3: To get have to get that.
• 4:05
Speaker 2: So I commend him for all the work he put
• 4:07
Speaker 2: in to keep going with the disease.
• 4:10
Speaker 3: It's a shame the transplant did not happen though.
• 4:13
Speaker 1: Yeah, it really is such a shame.
• 4:15
Speaker 4: But it also just puts in a perspective just how
• 4:17
Speaker 4: hard it is these days.
• 4:19
Speaker 1: To even get a new organ in the first place.
• 4:22
Speaker 4: I mean, all the ads that we've been seeing, especially
• 4:26
Speaker 4: over the past couple of months, you know, become an
• 4:28
Speaker 4: organ donor, become an organ donor, really hammers it home
• 4:31
Speaker 4: that getting a new organ, like a new kidney, it's
• 4:36
Speaker 4: never been tougher than ever to get.
• 4:39
Speaker 1: A new one, especially in this day and age.
• 4:41
Speaker 4: And you know, if somebody like Nick mangled, somebody of
• 4:45
Speaker 4: his stature unfortunately wasn't able to get one, then you know,
• 4:50
Speaker 4: I think at some points should be raised about potentially
• 4:54
Speaker 4: making new organ access a little bit easier, even perhaps
• 4:58
Speaker 4: encouraging man more people to sign up to become organ donors,
• 5:02
Speaker 4: because now I don't know the exact numbers as far
• 5:06
Speaker 4: as right now is concerned, but to my knowledge those
• 5:10
Speaker 4: are pretty low compared to what a lot of people
• 5:13
Speaker 4: are expecting it to be.
• 5:15
Speaker 2: Yeah, and right now, you talk about stats. One in
• 5:19
Speaker 2: seven US adults. That's an estimated three and a half
• 5:22
Speaker 2: million Americans suffer from kidney disease.
• 5:25
  Speaker 3: That's a big number.
• 5:29
Speaker 2: As of the nhl NIH's recent studies. And of course
• 5:33
Speaker 2: the organ donors themselves. It's not an easy process, and
• 5:39
Speaker 2: of course you can register to donate.
• 5:40
Speaker 3: And there's just a lot of red tape.
• 5:43
Speaker 2: I feel like that goes into this whole don you know,
• 5:47
  Speaker 2: organ donor situation.
• 5:48
  Speaker 3: But I digress.
• 5:51
Speaker 2: I think the way everybody's remembering, I mean, he seemed
• 5:54
Speaker 2: like such a beloved figure on and off the field.
• 5:57
Speaker 3: Rex Ryan was crying on the NFL that morning on ESPN.
• 6:02
Speaker 1: Yeah, Mike Greenberg Show, and.
• 6:05
Speaker 4: Mostly because this wasn't just a player coach relationship, and
• 6:09
Speaker 4: he went in depth about it, even through all the
• 6:11
Speaker 4: tears that he shed that it was more of a
• 6:15
Speaker 4: man to man connection that he felt with Nick.
• 6:18
Speaker 1: And you know what, his.
• 6:20
Speaker 4: Last game as the coach of the Jets, it perfectly encapsulate,
• 6:23
Speaker 4: encapsulates just that Mangold played for Rex Ryan hurt in
• 6:29
Speaker 4: that last game of the regular season, even when he
• 6:31
Speaker 4: had no business of being out on the field whatsoever,
• 6:34
Speaker 4: just because he wanted to play for his.
• 6:35
Speaker 3: Coach, and I think of Mango.
• 6:38
Speaker 2: He also had a lot of fun on the field,
• 6:39
Speaker 2: if I'm not mistaken, I got a lot of fun
• 6:41
Speaker 2: on the field as the Jets center.
• 6:43
Speaker 3: And of course he was.
• 6:44
Speaker 2: Part of the teams that did get to the AFC
• 6:47
Speaker 2: Championship Game back to back appearance.
• 6:50
  Speaker 3: I mean, I remember that.
• 6:51
Speaker 2: I was so hopeful for the Jets of that time too.
• 6:53
Speaker 2: That was just a lot of hope there and they
• 6:56
Speaker 2: got to Pittsburgh and that was it. But he was
• 6:58
Speaker 2: a he was a He was a solid core to
• 7:01
Speaker 2: that team, no doubt about it.
• 7:03
Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, especially when you have to Brickashaw Ferguson
• 7:07
Speaker 4: on that same line, Damian Woody, you know, just to
• 7:10
Speaker 4: name two other Keth Coggs to that Jets old line
• 7:14
Speaker 4: in the very early twenty tens, and it's just been
• 7:19
Speaker 4: tragic to see both of them. But really, all those
• 7:22
Speaker 4: Jets from the early twenty tens just talk about what
• 7:26
Speaker 4: Nick meant to them as a teammate, as a friend,
• 7:31
Speaker 4: a brother, because nobody should really have to go through that,
• 7:37
Speaker 4: especially at such a young age. And my heart just
• 7:41
Speaker 4: goes out to you know, not only Nick's family can't
• 7:44
Speaker 4: imagine what they're going through right now. But you know,
• 7:46
Speaker 4: anybody that got to know Nick, not just as a
• 7:49
Speaker 4: football player, but as a person, life just sure taking.
• 7:54
Speaker 2: Yeah, so short, and it is a reminder though here
• 7:59
Speaker 2: on the adapt side see adaptation and sports blend together.
• 8:04
Speaker 2: And I'm gonna talk with Paralympi and Patrick Holgren play
• 8:07
Speaker 2: that interview with did in the city over the weekend,
• 8:10
Speaker 2: but in another show. But this brings awareness that we
• 8:16
Speaker 2: always have to keep adapting to our circumstances. If you
• 8:19
Speaker 2: feel anything is wrong with your kidney function, get it
• 8:24
Speaker 2: checked out. I think Nick getting it checked out probably
• 8:28
Speaker 2: added ears to his life, to be honest with.
• 8:30
Speaker 3: You, because you have the diagnose NOS six.
• 8:32
Speaker 2: But you think about this, about nineteen years after getting
• 8:36
Speaker 2: the diagnosis, he was still here with us.
• 8:38
Speaker 3: That's to me impressive because I'm always worried about my
• 8:41
Speaker 3: one kidney. He had to deal with it in both
• 8:43
  Speaker 3: of his kidneys.
• 8:45
Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, to deal with it in both is just.
• 8:48
Speaker 4: Not at all easy. And you know, not that I
• 8:52
Speaker 4: can really understand where you're coming from, at least in
• 8:54
Speaker 4: your situation, Alex, but you don't. It's just tough to
• 8:58
Speaker 4: even imagine. I imagine him went through having it in
• 9:02
Speaker 4: both kidneys, you know, not just having it in Won,
• 9:06
  Speaker 4: but both.
• 9:08
Speaker 2: And I mean, wow, I'm wondering if he had the
• 9:13
Speaker 2: same fear that I do, which is like, oh my god,
• 9:14
Speaker 2: this kidney's gonna just let out one day, you know,
• 9:17
Speaker 2: because you have that fear, uh, and you gotta work
• 9:20
Speaker 2: to maintain it every damn day. And clearly since diagnosis
• 9:24
Speaker 2: for nineteen years, he did that to the best of
• 9:27
Speaker 2: his reality. So we got to take his story much
• 9:29
Speaker 2: like Terry Worden, who actually was honored by his family.
• 9:33
Speaker 2: Of course, he had a stovagio cancer, but he took care,
• 9:38
Speaker 2: he worked to take care of himself through that. All
• 9:41
Speaker 2: these people and their stories are just a reminder, and
• 9:46
Speaker 2: they're really short how life was cut short for them.
• 9:50
Speaker 2: Both are a reminder to keep working as hard as
• 9:55
Speaker 2: them on their health but also in their memory, like
• 9:59
Speaker 2: we gotta now keep working harder on ourselves, because that's
• 10:02
Speaker 2: what Nick would want. That's what Nick did for those
• 10:05
Speaker 2: nineteen years, even as a player.
• 10:07
Speaker 4: Yeah, that's what he did, and it's what any football fan,
• 10:12
Speaker 4: anybody who has followed his career, any Jets span out there,
• 10:16
  Speaker 4: that's exactly.
• 10:17
Speaker 1: What Nick would want them to do.
• 10:19
Speaker 4: And you know, I can just only hope and pray
• 10:22
Speaker 4: that the Johnson's can honor him and the only way
• 10:26
  Speaker 4: they could.
• 10:27
Speaker 1: I mean, they got their first win of the season
• 10:29
Speaker 1: this Sunday against him.
• 10:30
Speaker 3: That was a dramatic way to win for him too,
• 10:32
  Speaker 3: by the way.
• 10:32
Speaker 4: No absolutely, I mean Mason Taylor, son of his former
• 10:37
Speaker 4: teammate Jason getting the touchdown. Nick Folk is former teammate
• 10:41
Speaker 4: kicking all those field goals in the game too.
• 10:44
Speaker 1: And not only that.
• 10:45
Speaker 4: But you know what a way for Aaron Glenn to
• 10:47
Speaker 4: get his first win as the Jets head coach. Granted
• 10:50
Speaker 4: they weren't teammates or anything like that, but you know,
• 10:54
Speaker 4: you know, Nick definitely knew a thing or two about
• 10:57
Speaker 4: what it was like to be in that locker room
• 10:59
Speaker 4: for head coaches first win at the NFL level. I
• 11:04
Speaker 4: mean you just look at Eric Mangini, you look at
• 11:06
Speaker 4: Rex Ryan, yeah, all those other Jets head coaches.
• 11:09
Speaker 1: I mean, he knew what it was like to be there.
• 11:11
Speaker 4: And something else I'll bring up as well, Alex, because
• 11:14
Speaker 4: I've seen this around Jets Twitter the past couple of days,
• 11:17
Speaker 4: a lot of fans suggesting that the Jets re release
• 11:23
Speaker 4: Nick Mangle's Jersey circa. The twenty tens re release it
• 11:28
Speaker 4: for sale in their Team store, but with all the
• 11:32
Speaker 4: profits one hundred percent of the profits going towards Nick's family.
• 11:36
Speaker 4: I've seen a couple of people also suggested going to
• 11:39
  Speaker 4: oh a.
• 11:39
Speaker 2: Foundation if he doesn't, If he doesn't know, how would
• 11:41
Speaker 2: you feel about that?
• 11:42
Speaker 3: If he doesn't have it already?
• 11:43
Speaker 2: I think a foundation will be formed in Nick's honor, because,
• 11:47
Speaker 2: as I say, one in seven thirty million people have
• 11:51
Speaker 2: a kidney disease. That's a lot of people, and you
• 11:55
Speaker 2: don't think about it every day that you're rolling around,
• 11:58
Speaker 2: but it does happen. And I know a friend or
• 12:01
Speaker 2: two that have had dialysis, so they've gone through it.
• 12:05
Speaker 2: It's painful. But yeah, I would say that would be smart.
• 12:09
Speaker 2: And what foundations have you founded in your.
• 12:11
Speaker 4: Yeah, So to circle back to that, Nick Mangold, he
• 12:13
Speaker 4: doesn't have a foundation yet, and I'm sure there probably
• 12:18
Speaker 4: will be one that's created, whether it's by his wife
• 12:21
Speaker 4: or somebody else in his family. I mean that, you know,
• 12:26
Speaker 4: not that I want to put it this way, but
• 12:28
Speaker 4: it does seem like a foregone conclusion. But the National
• 12:32
Speaker 4: Kidney Foundation, American Kidney Fund, they're both promoting Oregon donation
• 12:37
Speaker 4: awareness in his memory.
• 12:39
Speaker 1: So it's something important to note.
• 12:40
Speaker 4: As well if any of your listeners perhaps want.
• 12:44
Speaker 1: To raise hard yourself. Yeah, I'm awareness for those foundations.
• 12:49
Speaker 2: I'll post a link on that because we always are
• 12:52
Speaker 2: trying to bring awareness.
• 12:53
Speaker 4: Here, and even the Leary Firefighters Foundation as well, because
• 12:57
Speaker 4: not that it's kidney related, but.
• 12:59
Speaker 2: Nick was a big support and you think about it,
• 13:01
Speaker 2: he waited till two weeks before his passing basically to
• 13:08
Speaker 2: share this, which means he tried his hardest not to
• 13:11
Speaker 2: let it out in the public. He wanted to work
• 13:13
Speaker 2: through it in private. And I actually give him a
• 13:17
Speaker 2: lot of credit for coming public about this because then
• 13:22
Speaker 2: maybe people who have this chronic inn disease won't feel
• 13:25
Speaker 2: as alone. Well I haven't been, now Nick Mingo's telling
• 13:28
Speaker 2: us he has. I mean that's a big deal in
• 13:30
Speaker 2: an athlete share such a human side to them, Yeah.
• 13:33
Speaker 4: Because it's not often that you really get to see
• 13:36
Speaker 4: that side of these athletes. I mean we put them
• 13:39
Speaker 4: on a pedestal all the time and think that, you know,
• 13:42
Speaker 4: they're soul above us, but in the end of the day,
• 13:45
Speaker 4: they're human too, And even with.
• 13:48
Speaker 1: The crazy, crazy world that sports has become, especially.
• 13:52
Speaker 4: In this day and age with all the gambling scandals
• 13:55
Speaker 4: in the NBA controversies as well with the NFL in
• 13:59
Speaker 4: regard to to gambling, we forget that these people are
• 14:03
Speaker 4: human too in the end, and we should be really
• 14:06
Speaker 4: seeing them for who they are as fellow humans, not
• 14:10
  Speaker 4: just athletes.
• 14:11
  Speaker 3: Yeah.
• 14:12
Speaker 2: Well, I am I am touched that he went public
• 14:16
Speaker 2: about it because I now feel less alone as well.
• 14:20
Speaker 3: I mean, one kidney.
• 14:21
Speaker 2: They never could find the other one when I was born,
• 14:24
Speaker 2: which is just the craziest thing. It's just we assume
• 14:27
Speaker 2: I have one and it's been going for thirty four
• 14:30
Speaker 2: years now. But when something like this pops up, it
• 14:34
Speaker 2: just also brings an internal awareness. Okay, if Nick Mangold
• 14:40
Speaker 2: a big ass center like he was big, he's a
• 14:43
  Speaker 2: big dude.
• 14:44
  Speaker 1: Oh yeah.
• 14:44
Speaker 4: Even when I saw him at the Stadium Series press
• 14:47
Speaker 4: conference at MetLife November twenty twenty three, he was over
• 14:51
Speaker 4: there along with all those representatives from the Aisles, Flyers, Rangers,
• 14:55
  Speaker 4: and Devils.
• 14:56
Speaker 1: He was there as one of the ambassadors as well.
• 14:58
  Speaker 1: I believe he.
• 14:59
Speaker 4: Was there with Leonard Marshall too. I need a fact
• 15:01
Speaker 4: check myself on that one, but it was still pretty big,
• 15:05
Speaker 4: especially in his post playing days.
• 15:09
Speaker 2: But if if, if he can, and I hate the
• 15:13
Speaker 2: word inflict inflicted, but if he can have an affliction
• 15:17
Speaker 2: like that, And by the way, to be a center
• 15:20
Speaker 2: of the NFL, you have to take great care of yourself.
• 15:21
Speaker 2: I know he probably did. I mean, the guy was
• 15:24
Speaker 2: a hall Is he a Hall of Famer yet.
• 15:27
Speaker 4: Not yet, but he will definitely get a busting cannon.
• 15:31
Speaker 2: And by the way, looking about the shoes he had
• 15:33
Speaker 2: to fill Becausekevin Mawai was an unbelievable center back in
• 15:35
Speaker 2: the day, and so Mango comes in there and does
• 15:38
Speaker 2: an incredible job for those seasons. But my point is, Uh,
• 15:44
Speaker 2: this prolific athlete comes out in public and says this
• 15:49
  Speaker 2: and shares.
• 15:49
Speaker 3: With them I need help. I wish more athletes had that.
• 15:54
Speaker 2: Kind of human side of them, that they would be admitting, Hey, yes,
• 15:57
Speaker 2: I need some help with something here. You know, I
• 15:59
Speaker 2: don't know it just it would add a lot more
• 16:01
Speaker 2: humanity to sports rather than the arresting side of things
• 16:04
Speaker 2: that we're seeing in the gambling scandal, as.
• 16:06
Speaker 4: It really would, and it would just help oh so
• 16:09
Speaker 4: much to just make us see the good side of
• 16:11
Speaker 4: sports for once in any age. That is just filled
• 16:13
Speaker 4: with so much negativity.
• 16:17
Speaker 2: So to anybody out there with these kidney issues, just know,
• 16:23
Speaker 2: if Nick Mango can take care of himself for nineteen years,
• 16:27
Speaker 2: that's longevity. Take care of yourself and be able to
• 16:29
Speaker 2: be around for nineteen years and you think, I mean,
• 16:33
Speaker 2: you get pretty beat up on a football field, so
• 16:35
Speaker 2: we had to overcome that too and taking care of
• 16:37
Speaker 2: this chronic kidney. And I'm wondering what the disorder was,
• 16:41
Speaker 2: the genetic was, because I'm not going to research this.
• 16:46
Speaker 3: And report more on it because we should.
• 16:48
Speaker 2: We should, we should build an awareness campaign on this
• 16:52
Speaker 2: because I'm sure whatever he had people have it too.
• 16:55
Speaker 3: They just don't talk about it.
• 16:57
Speaker 2: And I feel like the more you open up about
• 16:58
Speaker 2: this stuff, the more clear your head's going to be,
• 17:02
Speaker 2: the more you'll feel at peace with it. Maybe that's
• 17:04
Speaker 2: what maybe he also felt with that piece. While I
• 17:06
Speaker 2: needed help, he was at the point where he was
• 17:08
  Speaker 2: at peace.
• 17:09
Speaker 3: With what he was having. You know, I think that
• 17:10
Speaker 3: could have been it too. So I am.
• 17:16
Speaker 2: I needed to get this out there and just talk
• 17:18
Speaker 2: about it because it just wraps me up to keep
• 17:24
Speaker 2: holding on strong with my own stuff. But I mean,
• 17:29
Speaker 2: I Gemini literally wrote that I have one kidney. I
• 17:34
Speaker 2: don't remember talking about that on the year, but I
• 17:36
  Speaker 2: guess I did.
• 17:36
Speaker 3: At one point. So it's just this connectivity I have.
• 17:41
Speaker 3: And that's the other thing.
• 17:42
Speaker 2: When these players talk about it, you start to feel
• 17:44
Speaker 2: a connection with them instantly, like, oh my god, I
• 17:47
Speaker 2: have what he has or he has, you know what
• 17:49
Speaker 2: I mean. It's just there, there's an instant connection, and
• 17:51
  Speaker 2: I I don't know if i'd feel tied to him
• 17:55
Speaker 2: in that way, but I definitely feel like I can
• 17:57
Speaker 2: relate to what he was.
• 17:58
Speaker 4: Going you know exactly what you said that tide. It's
• 18:02
Speaker 4: not necessarily the best word, so to speak, but you know,
• 18:06
Speaker 4: you're kind of in the same boat there, so like
• 18:08
Speaker 4: you both have a.
• 18:09
Speaker 2: Mutual And I can fucking respect what he went through
• 18:12
Speaker 2: because I'm sure that kidney issue got worse as he
• 18:15
Speaker 2: got older. I mean, that's just part of life, so
• 18:18
Speaker 2: to need dialysis that he got, So I can respect
• 18:22
Speaker 2: the way he was able to carry himself.
• 18:23
Speaker 1: And yeah, agree after all those years of hard nos
• 18:27
  Speaker 1: football too.
• 18:28
Speaker 3: Yeah, and that's beyond before the NFL.
• 18:31
Speaker 2: He probably did college stuff too, high school in high school.
• 18:35
Speaker 2: So Nick will be missed, But I want to just
• 18:39
Speaker 2: say thank you to Nick Mingle for sharing his story,
• 18:42
Speaker 2: even though it was weeks before he passed, the fact
• 18:45
Speaker 2: that it's out there now and written about could give
• 18:48
Speaker 2: all of us with some kind of kidney issue some
• 18:52
Speaker 2: solace that we're not alone and maybe we all connect
• 18:55
Speaker 2: more through this, Like maybe this things people with kidney
• 19:01
Speaker 2: issues together instead of feeling isolated.
• 19:04
Speaker 3: That could be another result of all of his unfortunate passing.
• 19:08
Speaker 2: So but we will miss him. I know he was
• 19:11
Speaker 2: I think he was still going to football to Jet games,
• 19:13
Speaker 2: I'm sure over the years as well. And of course
• 19:15
Speaker 2: there was a big Ranger fan, which I didn't really
• 19:17
Speaker 2: know until I saw that video of him heckling Penguin's bench,
• 19:21
  Speaker 2: but oh we.
• 19:21
Speaker 1: Else would you see him at the Stadium Series press
• 19:24
Speaker 1: conference then, that's especially when the Rangers being involved.
• 19:27
Speaker 4: And I was the heck of a Stadium Series game
• 19:29
Speaker 4: too that he helped him be an ambassador for, even
• 19:32
Speaker 4: though it even though my team was on the business
• 19:37
  Speaker 4: end of that.
• 19:37
Speaker 1: Yeah, I was still a heck of a game.
• 19:39
Speaker 4: Then the last end with that, in hindsight, it just
• 19:44
Speaker 4: makes it even more special.
• 19:47
Speaker 3: Well, maybe this will be the spark the Jets needed.
• 19:49
  Speaker 3: I don't know.
• 19:50
Speaker 2: I mean there they seem to be really fired up
• 19:55
Speaker 2: to win for Nick on on Sunday, and that's that.
• 20:00
Speaker 2: But again I'm just saying the airwaves here at the
• 20:03
Speaker 2: One Leg Up Network to say thank you Nick man
• 20:05
Speaker 2: Gold for not only your contribution as a jet and
• 20:08
Speaker 2: the excitement you brought on the field, but now to
• 20:11
Speaker 2: add this human side, just because weeks before I think
• 20:15
Speaker 2: you might have known you were going to pass, it
• 20:18
Speaker 2: opens the door to more conversation about this which we need,
• 20:22
Speaker 2: which we definitely need. Thirty million people should not be
• 20:26
Speaker 2: suffering with kidney disease alone.
• 20:29
Speaker 3: And that's what I'm gonna end with here on the
• 20:31
Speaker 3: One Leg Up Network.
• 20:33
Speaker 2: And maybe this will breed a champion for people with
• 20:38
Speaker 2: kidney diseases that they can speak up more and take
• 20:41
Speaker 2: the mantle that I think Nick was trying to set
• 20:44
  Speaker 2: before he passed.
• 20:45
Speaker 3: I mean, he didn't say it for no reason.
• 20:47
Speaker 2: He obviouset it for awareness purposes, I would think, in
• 20:50
Speaker 2: addition to asking for help.
• 20:51
Speaker 3: So we'll have to see.
• 20:53
Speaker 2: I'm Alex Garett, One Leg Up Alex, and if you
• 20:58
Speaker 2: have kidney issue, use do consult. It's very weird the
• 21:03
Speaker 2: timing of this because you don't know this, Ryan, but
• 21:05
Speaker 2: all we go is on my doctor's office literally getting
• 21:08
Speaker 2: a renal test. Okay, so it's very weird timing Dad
• 21:12
Speaker 2: get that and then this happens.
• 21:14
Speaker 3: So that's why I'm really it's affecting me a little bit.
• 21:17
Speaker 2: So just just got to show we gotta keep on
• 21:20
Speaker 2: pushing and keeping taking care of ourselves.
• 21:23
Speaker 3: And now Nick sort of blaze that path. And had
• 21:28
Speaker 3: we known about it while he played, how interesting would
• 21:31
  Speaker 3: that have been?
• 21:33
Speaker 2: But see, he didn't want us to know about it
• 21:34
Speaker 2: while he played. He didn't want that to be the attention.
• 21:36
Speaker 2: So that's it for now. I'm gonna get Ryan's links
• 21:40
Speaker 2: to all those foundations, and we need to collaborate.
• 21:43
Speaker 3: We need to explore this more because kenney disease is
• 21:47
  Speaker 3: no joke.
• 21:48
Speaker 2: Having one kidney and worrying if it's going to fail
• 21:51
Speaker 2: on you any minute is no joke. And I can't
• 21:55
Speaker 2: imagine what Nick was going through the last few months.
• 21:59
Speaker 2: But we miss you now, and we'll have you in
• 22:02
Speaker 2: our thoughts and prayers always, and maybe, just maybe we'll
• 22:07
Speaker 2: take the mantel from here and really bring awareness that
• 22:10
  Speaker 2: you tried to.
• 22:11
Speaker 3: Bring two weeks ago.
• 22:14
Speaker 2: God rests the soul of Nick Mangold at the very
• 22:17
Speaker 2: very young age of forty one,
