Latest / Boundary Corner Podcast / Fuente Gone and Miami Game Preview
Transcript
- 0:45Welcome back to the boundary Corner podcast, I am Curtis
- 0:49Wilson, I'm Brian siglo buddy. We're on a Wednesday night,
- 0:56something happened a day ago that I guess we're going to talk
- 0:59about a little bit what you think.
- 1:02Yeah. Justin Fuente out as the
- 1:08Virginia Tech. Hokies head coach mutually
- 1:11parted ways we have so much. John LeBron.
- 1:18Yes. It's and just so y'all know
- 1:23we're about 8 or 9 minutes. Late bronze.
- 1:27Get everything ready in his computer crashes.
- 1:30So he has to do a full bore restart.
- 1:35So it completely seized up. I couldn't get a mouse to
- 1:38connect. It was it was wild.
- 1:40So I was like, all right let's let's try that again.
- 1:43We got time, we got this, we got this, we got a 10-minute buffer.
- 1:45We're going to get this in but we have so much download, then
- 1:48that happens. And then Brian tries to send me
- 1:51the rundown email that locks up for a few minutes.
- 1:56So we're like crap and all with what took place yesterday and
- 2:02you already said it. Brian.
- 2:04The mutually agreed to part ways.
- 2:08We knew it was going to happen. Right?
- 2:11We knew it was coming. We didn't know when it was
- 2:13coming. We thought it might be after BC.
- 2:17And apparently there were already talks of it going down
- 2:22after BC. Apparently, as early as last
- 2:26Wednesday the decision was made, the terms were not agreed on
- 2:30until looks like Monday afternoon and that's when the
- 2:33wheels started turning. In terms of talking about
- 2:37interim, head coach talking about Out, when we're going to
- 2:42talk to the team and let them know and all that fun stuff, so
- 2:45that ended up happening at 7:30, team meeting on Tuesday, broke
- 2:49live to the world at about 7:45. It's kind of a weird weird
- 2:56timing of it, but we will take it will take.
- 3:00We're officially out of the the Justin Fuente era.
- 3:05We're waiting to see what the next steps are going to be.
- 3:10It is. And, you know, Brian we heard
- 3:14from with any said last Wednesday, we essentially went
- 3:18into last Wednesday, we were four and five.
- 3:21Now, the question goes, when was with given the approval, right?
- 3:28Wasn't the Monday? Was it a few weeks before,
- 3:32essentially, what was the number?
- 3:36What's the number 84 was the number 9 and 3?
- 3:41You know those that number that it Justin Fuente had hit this
- 3:44year, he would have been retained.
- 3:46That's the one I got a feeling that after pit he had had the
- 3:51thumbs-up from everyone. He needed the thumbs up for
- 3:54that. It's your decision, make it when
- 3:57you can Yeah, and then it's like give it a few games, the cues
- 4:02games happened, then GT, then then the Dreadful Friday night,
- 4:08Primetime performance, at BC, and I think, I think that was
- 4:13probably the Capper. I think if you win BC, you may
- 4:18wait to the end of the season. But once the PC game happened,
- 4:22you kind of, you know, it's over.
- 4:26And when you've exhausted The avenue to get to a respectable,
- 4:31a twin season. I don't even think that was
- 4:34potentially enough to save his job, just the way, some of this
- 4:38other stuff went down in some of the stuff that we're hearing
- 4:41coming out of various. Whoo, buddy purses at this
- 4:45point, a lot of, a lot of stuff to unpack, but at this point we
- 4:52are, you know, Justin Fuente is done here.
- 4:55Virginia Tech. We said, Curtis is early.
- 4:59Last year was not just I don't want him here but I want him
- 5:02fired. The liberty liberty last year.
- 5:07Yep. I made the same call after pit.
- 5:12You made the call exactly one year ago, exactly.
- 5:17One year ago you may actually one year ago Thanksgiving the
- 5:21week and I was at the point it wasn't he can do stuff to save
- 5:25his job. It was at that point, he needs
- 5:27to be fired because he hasn't done.
- 5:28Enough to save his job. He hasn't done anything and he
- 5:31hasn't attempted to do anything to save his job.
- 5:34That's always going to be. I think our bigger issue than
- 5:39just him himself, right? Most people will do things and
- 5:44attempt to save their position. Fire people, make adjustments.
- 5:49It was almost like, well, status quo is good.
- 5:53And it's, like, status quo was, we're right at 500.
- 5:57This is an acceptable for our football program.
- 6:00Our football program is a 10-plus win, win, the ACC
- 6:05compete on a national level, not mediocrity.
- 6:10Yeah, it's not it's not and it was consistently.
- 6:14That was the product we were getting it.
- 6:17Really hasn't been since 2016, where we won, like we should and
- 6:23That was with players that Beamer recruited most of that
- 6:29was with a system that the rest of the ACC hadn't looked at yet
- 6:34very true and with an exceptional quarterback.
- 6:38Yeah. And with the, let's not discount
- 6:41the the talents of Jerrod Evans. Their Jerrod Evans came in and
- 6:45made made some things happen. Don't discount Evans, don't just
- 6:48count forward, Hodges Phillips, don't discount.
- 6:52The Edmunds. Brothers, on defense, other
- 6:55really good players on defense for those first two years.
- 6:59So that was what it was. And, you know, the terms agreed
- 7:03or Monday and I know some people have complained.
- 7:07Why didn't you just wait and, you know, just save that, you
- 7:11know, the know what's the few million 1.25 million, which was
- 7:17has been reported saved on the buyout Brian Me, and you talked
- 7:20about this in three years, 1.5 million, roughly 400,000 dollars
- 7:27that what's that five? Six, seven positions of a
- 7:30recruiting staff or analyst you're bringing in or that put
- 7:34that pays for your million-dollar least one?
- 7:39At least one of your your coordinators.
- 7:41Exactly. It pays for it, that one, your
- 7:44pays extra for coordinator. So to which credit getting in
- 7:48there and And getting that buyout down and into some way.
- 7:54Justin Fuente is Agents credit, who knows?
- 7:56It's over to get your guy back out on the market as quickly as
- 8:00possible. I still a lot of, you know,
- 8:05people are saying food, quit on the team.
- 8:07I'm not going to say that. If you got fired today in your
- 8:11boss asked, you, hey, but I'm going to need you to work.
- 8:14The Friday for me. Is that cool?
- 8:15I'm letting you go on Friday, but can you work the Friday?
- 8:18Would anybody do that? No, nobody would do it.
- 8:23If it was mid season you might consider it just to kind of keep
- 8:27things may be intact. Maybe maybe but I mean this
- 8:33isn't an ID or Durant's. Situation like this is this is
- 8:38true. Bridges have been burned to a
- 8:42point where they weren't going to be mended.
- 8:44No you might as well go ahead and cut your losses and you know
- 8:50you say Fuente quit he definitely said.
- 8:54All right, if you don't want me, I'm done.
- 8:56If you if you say that's quitting on the team that that's
- 8:58fine. I don't necessarily disagree but
- 9:02there are a lot of different ways to look at that angle.
- 9:04I love it but it's but for him, the guys going to get hired in
- 9:10the next month. Yeah, I mean I've no and it's a
- 9:16business, he's looking out for himself and I mean that that is
- 9:19that is what it is. And we're looking out for
- 9:20ourselves by moving on now versus waiting until after UVA
- 9:24or even later until December 15th, when it dropped down to
- 9:267.5. And you know what, it helps us
- 9:29even more get the footing and get the ground.
- 9:32Go get the ball rolling. Yeah, for getting out now we can
- 9:36make an announcement after UVA instead of waiting to know it,
- 9:40rid of the coach until I want my full assumption, depending on,
- 9:44what time that UVA game is whoever our next coaches is
- 9:47likely played that day. If they have played that day or
- 9:50their plane, during that day, it will be dropped.
- 9:54That would be ideal. I think it's I think that's
- 9:56what's going to happen. Yeah, I'm hoping, you know, a
- 10:00week from this Saturday we're talking about the way the UVA
- 10:06game shook out and who the next head coach is going to be the
- 10:09next head coach is speculating, the staff, speculating, who
- 10:13staying? But let's do this.
- 10:18What was very clear and I'm going to say this for on and I
- 10:23set it back in. Of last year with Babcock wanted
- 10:26him gone last year. Something stopped with Babcock.
- 10:30Don't know who something? Or someone stopped him because
- 10:33if you compare that press conference to this press
- 10:36conference night and day, it was clear, which was concise with
- 10:40did look confused. He did not have a bunch of goofy
- 10:43statements in there, right? Where the last wait, last
- 10:48December was trying to sell the unsellable.
- 10:50That was the problem, and he was not even a sold himself.
- 10:54Elf, he wasn't sold on it himself.
- 10:56I mean, and it looked, I mean he looked away his demeanor.
- 10:58I mean, he looked like a man that was up there almost like
- 11:03with a gun to his head. Pretty much.
- 11:05He did not want to be there. No, and this way it looked like
- 11:08he looked confident. He looked like alright we made
- 11:11this decision. Here's what's happening.
- 11:13Here's what's going to happen next you know disclose to
- 11:18whatever degree he could. What those next steps are going
- 11:21to look like and you know, took a Number of questions answered.
- 11:25Some of them didn't answer some others, which I get.
- 11:27I mean, you're not going to answer everything in this type
- 11:29of situation. So but I mean, he made it clear
- 11:33the two things that he thought were lacking the most in this
- 11:36regime consistency and identity and that absolutely hit the nail
- 11:43on the head. That and he'd and I'll say
- 11:47another thing. He took ownership for that press
- 11:50conference last year. Yes, he did.
- 11:52He did take ownership during and, and not and you know, he
- 11:55still stood by the decision he made at the time.
- 11:58But he said, I did not do a good job of communicating that
- 12:01decision. And I there was a bunch of Miss
- 12:05steps and how he, yes, back that up and he took ownership of
- 12:09that. So, you got to respect that but
- 12:11again, consistency and identity and those are the things we've
- 12:13been talking about a lot on here, right?
- 12:15Particularly consistency. Obviously the identity is kind
- 12:18of people see identity as different things and it's hard
- 12:23to really Define it, right? You kind of just know it when
- 12:26you see it. It's easy, right?
- 12:32You just get started 2018 through this year.
- 12:35It was a win-loss win. Lost.
- 12:37We lost. We were, we're right at one game
- 12:40over 500 again. And we talked about it last week
- 12:44with the lose a big game and then go out and have a
- 12:47performance that looks as good as anything you've done in that
- 12:51season. It's just, it's so inconsistent
- 12:54there in the thing. You want to know as a head
- 12:57coach. And as a, you want to be as a
- 12:59head coach and you want to have as an athletic director, you
- 13:02want to have a coach that can get the predictable outcomes
- 13:05taken care of. Right.
- 13:07And we talked about it before the start of the Season.
- 13:09We thought six games on our schedule should be more or less
- 13:12predictable outcomes. Yes, yes.
- 13:16And one of those has already fallen in Syracuse game.
- 13:19Yep. Yep.
- 13:21One of those is already falling. Eva still on the table.
- 13:26Now UVA definitely is a A better team than we anticipate in.
- 13:30Syracuse is at least better than what they were predicted to be.
- 13:36Yeah but it's the whole identity.
- 13:38The identity crisis also at times where Especially on the
- 13:45offensive side of the ball, the defensive had their ups and
- 13:49downs, but the offensive side of the ball.
- 13:51How many times Brian had? We said, certain times in the
- 13:55game looks night and day night. Yeah.
- 14:00Like, you know, first drive of camera with the Notre Dame game,
- 14:05where we were in some hooks, we Ransom under Center stuff, when
- 14:07we got inside the 10 toward touchdown, The next Drive, same
- 14:13situation doing something completely different.
- 14:16Yep. And it's going to go to
- 14:17somewhere on a talk about a little later on, but, you know,
- 14:22I think whoever comes in here regardless who it is and me, and
- 14:26Brian, are digging and believe it or not, y'all wait till
- 14:29Sunday, the back half of the episodes, Sunday, after the
- 14:32recap, all, we going to have some fun with looking at the
- 14:35candidates. Yeah, we've had a full list
- 14:39lists and we're not talking one point.
- 14:41Tan. Yep, it's growing by the day so
- 14:45we got a couple more days to review it.
- 14:47That's going to be a fun one, but whoever comes in consistent
- 14:52message, right? Yeah, thank you.
- 14:55Ever comes in here. Also should know.
- 14:59Look at Saturday. well, this Saturday Saturday.
- 15:05That was a four and five team on Senior Day likely no shot to
- 15:09win. The ACC scraping for Bowl,
- 15:11eligibility about 57,000, showed up, Which is the East and West
- 15:19stands look very good. The student section was full,
- 15:22the only things that really weren't full was the Duke
- 15:25section and parts of the South End Zone.
- 15:27That's it. So whoever gets this job has to
- 15:32understand, we are engaging fan base, right?
- 15:37And we will reciprocate that if you engage us full-bore, this,
- 15:43you know, we're showing out like this without the level of
- 15:47Engagement that we are accustomed to in the previous 25
- 15:51years. Well, the level engagement plus
- 15:55the winning. Say what you will say, what you
- 15:58will. Brian.
- 16:01If we were eating to going into this weekend, would we give a
- 16:05shit about the engagement of the coach?
- 16:09Much less much less like much. I don't give a shit.
- 16:16I don't care what he does, but when you're not winning, it's
- 16:19those little things but it's those little things to that give
- 16:23you more leeway. And let's flip it Brian to this
- 16:28because the guy right now with him, probably has more leeway
- 16:31than anybody. He's one of the guys that we
- 16:34believe should be retained on the Stafford Barbara to the next
- 16:38head coach is alumni. Hooky Legend, JC price takes
- 16:44over as interim and yeah, absolutely.
- 16:48Perfect choice. There's a lot of reasons for
- 16:51this. Being the perfect choice.
- 16:54Number one, the way he carries himself his demeanor, He
- 16:58commands a room. He commands respect obviously,
- 17:02Virginia Tech grad, Virginia Tech former football player, not
- 17:06only, but the player, but Elite level football, legend legend.
- 17:11Yeah. Got drafted or the Sugar Bowl
- 17:13team yet. Hard Biggie's titles.
- 17:17And the other part, the other parts of it here.
- 17:20So we've already got we've got to be line coach as well.
- 17:22He's helping with d-line still got d-line coach, so you take
- 17:26him off that you're not losing a full position, coach respected
- 17:32for his coaching and is recruiting both by players.
- 17:34And by the staff it also lets the other coordinators focus on
- 17:39their area. The ball one of which I'm not
- 17:42sure that we really give a shit about but it to that very soon.
- 17:46Soon. And you know, they thought they
- 17:49talked about, we're going to talk we're going to see him
- 17:51tomorrow. He apparently on Tuesday was
- 17:55setting up calls with with the recruiting class trying to get
- 17:59those either done yesterday or today.
- 18:03Yeah. So obviously hopefully that all
- 18:05those have happened at this point.
- 18:07I haven't seen any big Rumblings or anything yet other than like,
- 18:12you know, kind of a question face when I think Pernell thrown
- 18:16There. I think some of the recruits are
- 18:19probably getting getting some calls from other schools at this
- 18:22point, which is to be expected. As soon as soon as a coach is
- 18:24gone, everybody else that was in that top three top five is on
- 18:28the horn, man. So, and you got to probably a
- 18:31couple others that, you know, some, some players in pan out
- 18:34all of a sudden. The guy that was really firm is
- 18:36now, you know, potentially loose.
- 18:38Let me try to sneak in there. Last minute.
- 18:41I think Michigan. I think, was it, was it miss?
- 18:45My kids offered. Malachi orlimar law.
- 18:49I think was one of our law was Lamar law.
- 18:51They've already offered it. Yes.
- 18:53Oh okay. That's fine.
- 18:55It's an expectation. Anybody sitting out here who
- 18:58said, are you going to lose the whole class?
- 19:01No, you're not. Could you lose pieces?
- 19:04Yeah, but this is also an important and obviously the top
- 19:07end is going to be the biggest targets because they're going to
- 19:10be the most desirable pieces of the bunch.
- 19:14Lamar's not a topping guy, the Mars actually on the bottom have
- 19:17rain wise now. Not too many, guys, 65 300
- 19:21pounds. It have his, you know,
- 19:23athleticism Lamar law is definitely undervalued in this
- 19:27class. We talked about it when he
- 19:28committed, that's to be expected.
- 19:32But let's go back to j.c. a little bit here.
- 19:35Yeah, talk about the perfect fit because he really is the perfect
- 19:38fit and it gives him an opportunity to really
- 19:43Experience, what it's like to lead the team that he cares so
- 19:46much about. So that's I think it matters
- 19:48more to him too and I think that makes it just as just a special
- 19:52right? It does it does it does matter
- 19:55more than him because regardless what happens the rest of his
- 19:59career he always gets to hold for hopefully three games I'm
- 20:04hoping it's three games, three games.
- 20:08I got to head coach, my alma mater.
- 20:11What? I'm also hoping it does if he
- 20:13can rally The troops like potentially I believe he can.
- 20:20And they come out. Good.
- 20:21The next two weeks I think jhc prices, easily retained, I think
- 20:26he's going to get a DL stickle easily the DL coach.
- 20:29I think he's going to be in a HC because that's exactly what
- 20:33happened when fluent it came in, but had never been an associate
- 20:36or assistant head coach in his life.
- 20:38He got that label. Why?
- 20:40Because like you've already mentioned about JC the locker
- 20:44room, respects him, both sides of the ball.
- 20:46He's respected in the coaching Community.
- 20:48He's respected amongst the administrators.
- 20:50He's a respected him on the alumni.
- 20:52If you're a coach Walker. In, whoever it may be.
- 20:56You just shake his hand and say, welcome to the team say nothing
- 20:59else and figure out. Is he my aah Seekers.
- 21:02Is he going to be the guy where I've got to learn personalities?
- 21:06I've got to learn. I've got to learn the shape of
- 21:09this locker room. He's going to be the guy.
- 21:11I need to talk to. I need him on my right hand.
- 21:14Yeah, JC knows the lay of the land.
- 21:16He commands, like I said, we commands respect.
- 21:18He's a coaches coach. He's a players player.
- 21:21Yeah, and I think that respect carries over and I think that
- 21:27you're going to see him be at the again at the top of the
- 21:30list. Like you said of guys, that
- 21:31could be retaining the staff. I think you put Ryan Smith right
- 21:34up there with him. Yeah, as the two would I know
- 21:38we've said that on previous episodes but we're going to
- 21:40reiterated. Those are the of the of the
- 21:44coaches currently on this staff in terms of probability of them
- 21:48being retained and in terms of what they've done while they've
- 21:51been here those to have shown up.
- 21:54It Shone out, and just based on the positions, they coach,
- 21:59there's a likelihood that there would be a place for them on the
- 22:02staff. The only, the only third one
- 22:05that could potentially Shabbos a because we find out his letter,
- 22:11his letter goes past June of next year with the rest of the
- 22:14coaching staff doesn't him in, and he's one of them will
- 22:19respect to special teams coaches in the country before he hit
- 22:23who, Since he's been here, those.
- 22:26Yeah I mean he's definitely a he's a food guy but he's not a
- 22:29food disciple. Like he's not his wagon is not
- 22:34been hitched to food for his career.
- 22:36So I think that that gives him a little bit less of a connection
- 22:42to the staff versus some of the other guys that are on this
- 22:44staff, especially the offensive guys.
- 22:47Definitely, the offensive guys. All right.
- 22:50Well with also openly talked about his coaching Research,
- 22:54which I have a feeling, he's probably already been dipping,
- 22:57his toes in the water, a little bit figuring out, you know,
- 22:59what's going on sales, like some of that was happening today.
- 23:02There's a bit a whole lot of chatter smoke but not he said
- 23:07it, right? Yeah.
- 23:08You said you're going to hear things which was which is kind
- 23:12of a breath of fresh air from an add, right?
- 23:14We're going to do a search. It like, no, no, you're going to
- 23:17hear stuff. Just to put it out there to let
- 23:20us know but we've already hit it once.
- 23:22Brian, he already put like the first thing he talked about was
- 23:25engaging. Hokie Nation engaging
- 23:28Blacksburg, engaging essentially, the state gauging
- 23:31the region and that's, that's the big thing that especially
- 23:36out the gate that Fuente did not do a very good job of, I think.
- 23:42So, when winter came in here, there was respect for their
- 23:46Traditions but there was Respect for the operations.
- 23:50How the program was run? How the program was operated?
- 23:53Well, I'm gonna take that back. I think he respected.
- 23:57What was operated on the field and in Blacksburg coca, I don't
- 24:01think he understood how things were operated in Virginia, in
- 24:06the Carolinas, in the Mid-Atlantic region.
- 24:09I don't think he has a feel for that.
- 24:13I think he, I think he respected the hell out of what Frank did
- 24:15here in Blacksburg. I don't think he understood the
- 24:19nuances. Well, I don't think, I think he
- 24:22respected what Frank did. I don't think he understood how
- 24:26his actions specifically would fit into that.
- 24:29Yes. Does that make sense?
- 24:31That's a good way to put it? Yeah.
- 24:33So I think he respected. I think he paid homage to what
- 24:38Frank did but I don't think Think he understood that, we
- 24:41expect a lot of those same things from you day in day out.
- 24:45Yeah. And and especially with the
- 24:47engagement piece, frankly, it wasn't Frank.
- 24:49That always been engaging younger or older and it was you
- 24:57know the all Shucks. They had a great relationship
- 25:00with the media. You know, I saw Frank has
- 25:05several hokey events never met him want to hopefully one day.
- 25:08That'll happen. You just see him walking around
- 25:10just Shakin hands and talk and just very relaxed, just heat.
- 25:14You can see he on the room you could see was just so relaxed.
- 25:17It if you somebody wouldn't talk to him, he was very open.
- 25:21If he saw somebody, he recognized, he go.
- 25:23It was just, it was just one of those cool things to see.
- 25:26And the next guy has to be that in some way shape or form when
- 25:32hope they're in July of next year.
- 25:35Brian me, and you had to a hokie Club dinner here in Richmond for
- 25:38kickoff. The new head coach, we see that
- 25:41and whether we get a chance to talk to the guy or just hear him
- 25:44talk for a couple minutes. We hope we see that.
- 25:48But let's talk about style, Braun.
- 25:52I think we saw Justin Fuente is an X's and O's coach, right?
- 25:58He was, he's also buddy. Coach, what do you coach?
- 26:01He liked me, likey. Likey like his buddies, what?
- 26:04But yeah, he was, he was more of a focus on.
- 26:09The process and the X's and O's and not so much on evaluating
- 26:18everything from a top-down approach which, which is a CEO
- 26:22style, which is specifically, what wit mentioned.
- 26:25And that's a style that we've talked about is, is what most
- 26:29power, five schools need to operate under.
- 26:33Yep. It's if you might get away with
- 26:36it at some other schools, but I feel like in the CEO has to do
- 26:40several things, right? So it's not just managing the
- 26:44staff and the roster that that's a big part of it, but it's also
- 26:48managing donors. It's also making sure that
- 26:52you're engaging the community, you're the face of the
- 26:55organization. You're the it all it has to do
- 27:00with closing deals to right. You.
- 27:02Damn right. He's got to be a a CEO has to be
- 27:06able to close with the best Personnel that in the country.
- 27:13And we don't have that right now.
- 27:15We're looking for someone that can do that type of role.
- 27:19Absolutely. And the CEO also is going to be
- 27:22a person. It's always looking high level
- 27:25right? Yeah.
- 27:26High-level big picture. I level big picture.
- 27:29So when they're looking at specific Parts, they're not
- 27:32going to be trying to get into the nuts and bolts.
- 27:35It's essentially going to be Example.
- 27:38The Run game is crap. We're getting blown off the
- 27:41ball. Every time offensive line coach.
- 27:43Coach. This is your day to come.
- 27:45Talk to me that. Look at the film.
- 27:48Tell me what's happening. What are you going to do to
- 27:50change it? Hey, go about your way CL.
- 27:55Also is something that we mentioned that it goes
- 27:59hand-in-hand, right? The ability to hire a
- 28:01competitive staff, In a CEO type world.
- 28:04You're not hiring buddies, you might have a few confidants like
- 28:07one guy like one person you want on that staff because you trust
- 28:12them, they're your sounding board, right?
- 28:16It one. Why For the longest time you
- 28:22have your coaching beard but she also have.
- 28:24You also have your other guys on there, you know, we're going
- 28:28here with a little Ted lasso reference.
- 28:29You got to have your coach beard there but you're going to have
- 28:32some other coaches on the staff that you know you got to have
- 28:36your other guys that just fit the team.
- 28:40Are a good fit for the team you have.
- 28:42Yeah, they aren't your buddies. They aren't just guys that
- 28:45you've always done it with. And you you just can't have that
- 28:49many buddies on a team. I mean again I said it a second
- 28:53ago, Billy Hite was here when Frank got here and Billy Hite
- 28:57became The concierge for Frank from numerous years and Frank
- 29:03had turnover in Franklin. People going people, left and
- 29:06yada yada, and back and forth. And as the later years, we saw
- 29:11all right, when he became not as quick to let people go or move
- 29:15people along, that's when we headed to the wrong direction.
- 29:19With the Wente unfortunately. Like that's why I don't think
- 29:24he's ever get another job. Because like you can't play this
- 29:29like you can have one person. You can't have six or seven.
- 29:34Yeah, you never sounding board but you know I think what we're
- 29:39hearing especially with mentioning going from 8th to
- 29:42Fourth and revenues, we reviewed it last week and if we really
- 29:45went up that much Brian. You know, we're probably going
- 29:52to be right at the cusp of a million for each ordinator,
- 29:54we're probably paying 100,000 is going to probably be minimum.
- 30:00Yeah. And like, like we've said before
- 30:01eight fifty plus is kind of the starting point you want for a
- 30:05high-quality coordinator and usually if you're starting
- 30:09price, tag is 850 then. And you're willing to go up to
- 30:12as much as you know, 12 1.2 at the very top end that then you
- 30:19can really get pretty much anybody that you want.
- 30:23Yeah, but the billion is kind of the is kind of the the nice
- 30:29butter zone, right? It's the Zone where you more or
- 30:32less can get your choice because anybody make you much more than
- 30:35that, is already been locked down.
- 30:37Pretty much. The one other thing that I think
- 30:41went, hopefully, we'll learn from this, you know, ten year is
- 30:47I think with no needs to know, if you see something, you feel
- 30:51like is not performing. You need to go put the screws to
- 30:54the coach. If there is an element of this
- 30:56team that you feel is underperforming, not looking
- 30:59good. Have a talk and I think you'll
- 31:02see that. I think I think over the next
- 31:05five years If there is a specific unit underperforming
- 31:09for more than two, I think we're going to see turnover.
- 31:13I don't think we're going to see.
- 31:15We'll just we'll just try to get there.
- 31:17No it's no longer about trying to get there.
- 31:18It's trying to get back where we were because the way college
- 31:22football is shaping up where we were Is a chance to win national
- 31:28titles again, dip where we were and where I say where we were as
- 31:32which is being a top 15 team. The way everything's looking for
- 31:36Collegiate football. If your top 15 team, you have
- 31:38chances to win national titles again, and that's what we want.
- 31:42Yep. You at least have the chance to
- 31:44play some games to get there. Damn, right.
- 31:48All right, buddy, who so what time was it?
- 31:53Did you text me this afternoon? And you were like, holy crap.
- 31:56Crap, did you see the bleep on corn?
- 31:59It was about what 2:30 3:00. Yeah.
- 32:01I think a little after 3:00 because I was I had to run a few
- 32:04errands after I got off work. And I was like, no I didn't but
- 32:08then I read it and you got the article up, right?
- 32:12Let's start with a few coats. Shout out, Mike knows Olek
- 32:15helluva work. First of all, we're not ignoring
- 32:18the other pieces of the article, but a lot of the other pieces
- 32:21people knew about, right? We either knew about or it was
- 32:26Heavily speculated it was more of a you might have a differing
- 32:31opinion of how things went down, but it was common knowledge.
- 32:34That this is what it was. The closest thing that was
- 32:38coming to this was dried Evans on Don talking about, there were
- 32:43some plays where it was. I had one read.
- 32:46If it was not open Iran. That was the play.
- 32:49Yep. Okay this goes that was just
- 32:53like scratching the surface. I mean it pretty much took what
- 32:58Gerard said in like blew it up. Big picture and I'll just read
- 33:02it straight from the horse's mouth here.
- 33:04They're getting credit Mike, mrs.
- 33:06Olech Roanoke Times you have you've got, okay, this is a
- 33:12quote from a source here. You've got to let your
- 33:14quarterback, be your quarterback.
- 33:17There wasn't autonomy to read the defense on a run option.
- 33:21He would tell the quarterback, whether he should hand it off or
- 33:23run. You can't manage that.
- 33:25We piece of it. It goes on to say core Nelson
- 33:28would also dictate where his quarterbacks needed to throw on
- 33:32passing plays before the snap. And this is the bitch of it.
- 33:36Criticize them for passing elsewhere.
- 33:38Even if the intended target was covered a source ran through
- 33:41multiple instances for the Roanoke Times of when Burmeister
- 33:45was ripped this fall, for making a positive play, only because
- 33:49the ball went to a different receiver than core Nelson,
- 33:51wanted. It's frustrating because there's
- 33:54tremendous football team. Are a source set and this this
- 33:59got me lit. I know got you lit.
- 34:02What? This got me lit.
- 34:03How many times the first four weeks of the Season?
- 34:05Brian. Did you say?
- 34:07I don't think there's a reading this.
- 34:09I think it's a, it's a damn hand off when it should be a read
- 34:13that ends crashing. Fractions.
- 34:15Got 40 down the sideline. You were hot about that crap.
- 34:18You know, we talked about it. We said like almost 90, 90 to
- 34:22100 percent of the time. It was either design.
- 34:25Keep or design give and most of the time in the early season, it
- 34:28was designed give and we also talked about in the passing game
- 34:34Braxton keying on one. Receiver a lot, a whole lot D.
- 34:39See ya, in play the tabi on when Caleb Smith is running that
- 34:4410-yard in and he's wide open. Yeah, it is, there was a bunch
- 34:50two instances that we talked about and we've talked about it
- 34:53in Pre talked about, at the end of last year, even some with
- 34:57with Hendon. But we saw it a lot more, a lot
- 35:00more this year with in terms of the, the Run game, and yeah.
- 35:03Okay. So I'll say this, you're going
- 35:05to have plays where after the check with me, you're going to
- 35:09say we're giving it 100%, but there's reasons for that, right?
- 35:14So if I get a base look, With a, with an icy to high safety.
- 35:21Yeah. I'm probably going to give it to
- 35:22the running back because there's probably going to be space in
- 35:25between the tackles for him to make a big run.
- 35:29Right. Yeah, that makes sense, right?
- 35:33All right, so that that's when something like that makes sense
- 35:36and you're going to have a check for that and you might have a
- 35:39check if you've seen the defensive end crashing down
- 35:42every damn time, you hand the ball off.
- 35:44Hey, we're keeping it this time. There's going to be instances
- 35:47like that. What there isn't is taking the
- 35:50entire read element out of those plays 100% Stock and Barrel.
- 35:57Can I say it? It sounds like to me.
- 36:00You got a mini apollyon up in the booth who wants to dictate
- 36:04and have control over, absolutely everything.
- 36:09Micromanaging, the quarterback and I said it, I said it earlier
- 36:12it's it was damned if you do damned if you don't, because we
- 36:16talked about Hendon last year and he talked about Braxton this
- 36:19year and I think the I think the difference is that Hendon was
- 36:23willing to go off script. Yeah.
- 36:26And I think that that ultimately got him in the dog house which
- 36:30That damn shame because it's just a kid making a play.
- 36:34But in this situation you're damned if you do damned if you
- 36:36don't. If you're getting ripped by
- 36:39cornelison, if you throw a ball where he wants it and that guys
- 36:43covered and then it ends up in a turnover.
- 36:45If you'd if you throw it to the guy, that's opencore Nelson is
- 36:48rapping. If you throw it and it ends up
- 36:50in a turnover or a bad play 110, Foose rapid your ass.
- 36:54So you getting your ass ripped either way.
- 36:57You might as well go out there and make the right play and that
- 37:00and that's probably what hooker did most of the time.
- 37:01Can I ask this in? Let's go back to 2019.
- 37:06How much of it do you think? At that point in time this was
- 37:10going on in white Hendon, didn't get the start to beginning of
- 37:13the Season. Think about everything we heard
- 37:16about keeping running dictating every single term where the
- 37:22reports were well, sometimes he doesn't look good in practice,
- 37:25was it? Because in practice, he was
- 37:26told, well, this guy who you're on a 10 yard out he gets up
- 37:30there and he sees well they're running covered to he's going to
- 37:32be right underneath my fast lane but we're running, we're
- 37:36running. You know, Dalton's coming up and
- 37:39run in a 10-yard hitch, I can squeeze it right between these
- 37:42two, linebackers back to a pic over here, and maybe that's
- 37:46what. Brad didn't like told you throw
- 37:47it over here, go to this guy. What this says to me can in you
- 37:54made a tweet earlier about a high school somewhere in the
- 37:58midwest this sounds exactly what like a high school Offensive
- 38:01Coordinator would do know it. Sounds worse, Middle School,
- 38:05I've coached eyes. School, coaches at high school,
- 38:08give players with a lot, less ability, way more responsibility
- 38:14in these types of offenses. It's sad.
- 38:19It is sad. You can't micromanage that much
- 38:24and you, I mean, he'll we, when I was coaching, we ran a damn
- 38:28flexbone and our quarterback had more autonomy in the passing
- 38:31game. Then they're given Braxton
- 38:33Burmeister And now, you branch has been getting ripped left and
- 38:41right. Right.
- 38:42And while you sit here and say shit maybe Braxton is not as,
- 38:47you know, in the past game, maybe he's not as bad as we
- 38:49thought or he's. He's thinking so damn much
- 38:52because he's got someone micromanaging his game.
- 38:56Come look here gets under Center sees.
- 38:59They're going to run a zero Blitz.
- 39:02The worst corners on my second best receiver.
- 39:05Well, I'm not going to trade who's getting pressed.
- 39:08They're playing off on teh and he's running a slant.
- 39:11What why do you want to throw the tray?
- 39:13Well, that is. Why does he want to throw to the
- 39:15wrong guy? Yeah, I mean branches arm is
- 39:17going to always be Braxton's arm but everything else.
- 39:20I mean that goes back to Cornell so either directly or indirectly
- 39:23either he's not doing a good job of teaching.
- 39:26Teaching his quarterback or he's making his quarterback place so
- 39:29tight that he's not getting it done.
- 39:32Probably both. Alright Braun well let's move
- 39:35on. We're going to get off the
- 39:36subject tonight maybe in the future next few months here
- 39:43we'll talk a little bit more about the Justin Fuente era and
- 39:46other things, I'm sure things will be coming out will be
- 39:48discussing but might have some things for you all in the
- 39:52future. You definitely want to tune
- 39:53into, but let's talk about a couple good things.
- 39:56Bryan Adams Monster Day on Saturday.
- 40:01Rahim Blackshear, he jccc running back of the week.
- 40:06Well deserved. Yep, it finally happened.
- 40:10Ladies and gentlemen, he had a big day.
- 40:13I was happy. I was, I was Big Happy.
- 40:17I've been, I've been on this kids, I've been on his name for
- 40:23two years now. I knew he had this type of game
- 40:26and him. I'm glad to see it coming to
- 40:28fruition. Hopefully, we'll see some more
- 40:30of that these last two weeks where he finishes out, strong
- 40:34here. Yep.
- 40:37But hopefully great job. I mean great performance and the
- 40:40running game. Good job in the passing game.
- 40:43He really put all of his abilities together in one game,
- 40:47and I think that's really the thing that he's been missing is
- 40:50he's had a game or two where he hit 80 yards, rushing, but
- 40:54didn't it was all focused on the Run.
- 40:56He didn't get a lot of touches in the passing game.
- 40:59He's had big big games where he caught the ball but didn't
- 41:02really get a lot of look in the running game or wasn't
- 41:04effective. He was effective in both Parts
- 41:07of that game this week and that was big for him.
- 41:10Exactly. So good on him.
- 41:13Regardless what happens? I know he did the senior day
- 41:15ceremony in you know obviously we're seeing a little more and
- 41:20more guys we know are going to be gone.
- 41:21Now we start seeing guys that are accepting Senior Bowl invite
- 41:27so many know what something really stinks but you know it is
- 41:31what it is. We'll discuss more on them at
- 41:35later dates as we get Closer, a try to watch those games.
- 41:39Hopefully, those guys have great weeks in Berlin.
- 41:43Did you watch them hope these hoops since like I did?
- 41:46I did impressive win over Navy. Yeah.
- 41:50When will the Annapolis and kind of dominated that game from the
- 41:54opening tip? Yes, start to finish and they
- 41:58really shut down their best shooter and had a pretty good
- 42:02shooting night themselves, a couple flashy plays and then we
- 42:06had the The Radford win, which first half was a, was a slog
- 42:11offensively. They still play very well
- 42:13defensively but was kind of a slog on the, on the offensive
- 42:17end, but picked it up a lot in the second half.
- 42:20Finish strong, good wind, they have the storm Murphy to Justin
- 42:25mutts nutmeg alley-oop. The nutmeg aleut SportsCenter.
- 42:30Wasn't that the one play of the top top play-by-play man.
- 42:35Also with that game though because of how the slog was in
- 42:39the first thing. You just said it how they play
- 42:41defense. I think it tells a lot about
- 42:44Mike young in about the team overall that this team believe
- 42:49that if they don't have the best night shooting or best, start
- 42:52shooting play hard defense, keep us in the game, dip the Piston,
- 42:57the shots will fall don't Don't let don't let a loss on the
- 43:01offensive end, beat you on the defense event.
- 43:04The Hokies are 3 and 0 and ranked 26th in the country.
- 43:09I'm trying to figure that out especially with quite a few
- 43:12teams losing and you know you know we're at that time of year
- 43:17where it's a lot of out of conference stuff so you know the
- 43:21next game is going to be tomorrow things tomorrow night.
- 43:24Get it up here. Yep.
- 43:26Tomorrow night 8:00, get st. Francis so Of Pennsylvania.
- 43:32And then let's take a look here. Oh, the next one.
- 43:35That's the Memphis. That's the big one.
- 43:38There's three because there's Merrimack Sunday.
- 43:40Everybody going to go up to that game.
- 43:42Four o'clock tip and then Wednesday night as we press
- 43:46record for hate week, part to the Memphis game tip, so that
- 43:52will probably be firmly right here for me to watch.
- 43:56And I'm sure it'll be right there for you to watch so and
- 44:02then it's Maryland after that. So really you kind of have to
- 44:06easy ones with a couple back-to-back hard ones in the
- 44:08same week, you know, basically a week apart, so definitely
- 44:13exciting time. Times.
- 44:15Yeah, we'll know a whole lot about this team.
- 44:17I think by, you know, Thursday morning next week because that
- 44:22Memphis game is going to be a big measuring stick in terms of
- 44:28where they are right now, right? Oh absolutely and obviously
- 44:32playing nollie, right? Yep.
- 44:36Alrighty. All right, before we get into,
- 44:39hey, tweek part 1 with no the enemy in Miami, we are going to
- 44:45Take a quick pause for a message from our digital partners.

- 45:10Dash report. Now back to the episode before
- 45:15we get to Know The Enemy, by the way, kind of a For the cookie
- 45:21basketball Maryland's. On the first 810, perennial
- 45:26solid team. Dayton on the 12th. 8:10
- 45:30defending Champion. Steve Bonnie on the 17th and you
- 45:35can Carolina to close out the month of December.
- 45:38Both on the road. So we will.
- 45:41When Jen, when the New Year rolls around, we will denote
- 45:44everything. We need to know about the
- 45:45hoagies basketball team. But Brian, let's talk a little
- 45:48more about the Hokies football team.
- 45:50Know The Enemy? Let's talk about the Miami
- 45:52Hurricanes before we get into the players.
- 45:55Brian, let's give just a quick oversight.
- 45:57What kind of Defense are we looking at here?
- 46:00Yeah, this is a four to five pressure defense, the main EDS
- 46:04special. They want to create the the so
- 46:07call Havoc stats with their pressure packages.
- 46:11They want that turnover chain out early and often but they're
- 46:17still very undisciplined, especially on the defensive side
- 46:21of the ball. Yeah, Manny Diaz.
- 46:23Definitely the architect of it to various Robinson the
- 46:27coordinator there, and let's start Brian.
- 46:29Let's start on the outside. Let's look at the corners.
- 46:31We're also getting a corner to Corey couch, 510, 170 lb corner
- 46:38so far this year, twenty six tackles no pics, but a good
- 46:42number five pass deflections. He was a composite for star and
- 46:46a Hollywood Florida. When he came out, what is the
- 46:49tape telling us on to Corey? They use three corners but he's
- 46:54probably the most balanced of the three.
- 46:56He's good in zone. Good in man.
- 47:00Good against the run. Good at pretty good at setting
- 47:03the edge when he's asked for that responsibility.
- 47:06He's not really a lead in any one of those areas he will give
- 47:09up some catches but he's really the guy that they lean on to
- 47:14match up against some of the better receivers on the other
- 47:17side of the ball. All right.
- 47:21Do you think he'll be entree or do you think it's going to be?
- 47:26Or is it going to be a mishmash of where L we are on the field?
- 47:32They usually go kind of left and right.
- 47:35So depending on where he's where, he's come in at because
- 47:39again, they do rate, rotate three.
- 47:41He'll usually stay on the same side of the ball obviously
- 47:44depending on what the coverage is and then he sort of motion.
- 47:47There might be some switches there.
- 47:49But okay, Gandhi. Tell he tends to stay on the
- 47:51same side of the ball. Got it, got it.
- 47:53Alright, let's look on the defensive line now.
- 47:56On Jafari Harvey at a Vero Beach, High School in Fort
- 48:00Pierce. Florida, six foot four 252
- 48:03pounds, defensive end, he was a four-star when he came out, he
- 48:06was a top-10 defensive, a weekend defensive end so far
- 48:11this season 21, tackles two and a half sacks four-and-a-half.
- 48:17Tackles for loss. So, total seven tackles for
- 48:19loss, he also had a interception return for a touchdown.
- 48:23Looks like that prototypical build.
- 48:25What are we seeing? Take from him.
- 48:28And how much, how much, how much emphasis is the offensive line
- 48:33going to have to pay attention to him?
- 48:36The only to give him some notice, he's a guy that kind of
- 48:38flew up the depth chart. With those three, Big D ends
- 48:42that left the program last year for the draft.
- 48:46He's their primary Russian. They're not Elite at that
- 48:49position group this year, like they've been in the last two to
- 48:53three years but he's the best of the bunch, he's good at setting
- 48:56the edge in the Run above average, pursuit in the Run game
- 49:01but he's primarily going to be the pass rush specialist he's
- 49:04not out there. Again, getting a bunch of sacks
- 49:08like Phillips, or Roche were last year or Russo as well.
- 49:13You know, the year before, but he is a guy that is very solid
- 49:20in his past Russian steady, and has got a chance to get get in
- 49:24the backfield there and cause some Havoc, I got you now,
- 49:27Brian, are we going to see him on Luke to new decide or parker?
- 49:31Come inside clouds, Dandy stutters.
- 49:34He a mixed bag Kind of a mixed bag but more or less.
- 49:38He's going to stay on the the right hand side of the defense.
- 49:43So he's going to be going against Luke then.
- 49:46So we know someone Luke's issues.
- 49:49Does he have that in his tool bag or is?
- 49:52It is tool bag? It's just not an effective tool.
- 49:56Like I said, it's kind of, it's above average.
- 49:58I mean, he's got a good speed rush.
- 49:59He's got a couple moves again. Nothing is Elite.
- 50:02Nothing jumps off the tape. Like you're not you're not
- 50:05looking at a jail on Phillips or like a Quincy rachet or anybody
- 50:11like that. I mean he's probably The a step
- 50:13below where Roche was at this point last year, okay?
- 50:16Good to know. Good to know again.
- 50:19The more, you know, out there. All right, Brian.
- 50:21Well, let's take a look at another guy in the secondary
- 50:25Cameron kitchens out of Northwest High School in Miami,
- 50:27Florida, a 5-11 202 pounds safety.
- 50:31He is a true freshman. Starting a three-star 34,
- 50:36tackles only one for loss for pass deflections and a forced
- 50:41fumble. And obviously, he's got Really
- 50:43big shoes to fill in his position.
- 50:46Yeah he's been the primary starter at free safety.
- 50:49Since bubble bold and went down a few weeks back.
- 50:52He's done a pretty good job. He was getting some reps before
- 50:55that. He's not quite as a versatile
- 50:58player. As bubble was, he's not asked to
- 51:01do quite as much because of the way Bubba played.
- 51:06They could really do a lot with their secondary with their
- 51:10coverages and mixing things up. They're not Able to do quite as
- 51:14much as that he is. More of a prototypical, free
- 51:16safety than Bubba. Whereas Bubba more than likely
- 51:19he's going to be playing some sort of strong safety or hybrid
- 51:22in at the NFL level, but he is a very good tackler and he does do
- 51:26a good job of breaking on balls both in deep coverage and then
- 51:31breaking breaking towards the ball when the ball is thrown in
- 51:34front of him. So still very good at that but
- 51:37again not quite as versatile as above us so they can't do as
- 51:40much in the back end. So I'm guessing probably
- 51:44whatever where you saw bold and move up down round occasionally
- 51:48cover a guy. Whatever he is, is going to
- 51:52probably dictate a lot of what coverage they're running for
- 51:54that specific play. They're doing a lot less of man
- 51:59at the line with him. It's either he's going to be
- 52:03deep guy, he's going to be dropping into into the box and
- 52:07some sort of inverted cover to. There's there's a couple things
- 52:11they do with them but they Play him at the line of scrimmage
- 52:13like they would bubble on occasion.
- 52:15Okay, makes sense. All right, well, let's look at
- 52:19one other guy for get into a little bit more stats here.
- 52:21Corey flag jr. He's me the 5-11 230-pound
- 52:27linebacker, kind of steady season going so far, forty five,
- 52:31tackles three sacks, two additional tackles for loss of
- 52:34five. Total a pick a Houston Texas -
- 52:38out of North Shore. High School was just A myth 3
- 52:42story came out and believe it or not is want to Bow Davidson's
- 52:46drops. He did have an offer from VT,
- 52:50yeah, this is there. Mike linebacker and he does a
- 52:55good job, he's a good athlete. He runs pretty well.
- 52:58Sideline to sideline, where he excels though and we talked
- 53:01about those pressure packages. Those Manny Diaz pressure
- 53:04packages. He is very good when blitzing,
- 53:07whether it's delay, Blitz. Whether it's just firing the a
- 53:10gap. He comes in there really fast
- 53:14and hard is able to get to the quarterback.
- 53:16Several times puts pressure on the quarterback to get rid of
- 53:20the ball before, he's ready have to scramble early and the down.
- 53:24So he does a lot really well with that but he can get
- 53:27influence into mistakes. He will occasionally get out of
- 53:31his out of his, his Gap. He will occasionally lose
- 53:36leverage when he's got some sort of outside contained
- 53:39responsibility. So there's there's areas there.
- 53:42We can take advantage of him there but he does a good job for
- 53:45a young kid called the defense from The Mike linebacker
- 53:48position. All right, real quick question I
- 53:50don't know if you noticed it on tape 7 and Steed.
- 53:54I saw he was a linebacker to is he more their weak side or like
- 53:57their back or type guy? Yeah, he's there backer.
- 54:00He handles that responsibility. So yeah and he's not I'd say not
- 54:07quite as high of a ceiling as as flag has Okay, if he's kind of
- 54:13more of it, more of a steady Eddie.
- 54:15Okay. Sometimes guys, we can't go
- 54:18through every play, we have to pick and choose and we look at I
- 54:22look at the statistical data. Look at where they are coming
- 54:26out. Brian looks to tape sometimes.
- 54:27He'll ring me and say, give me more info on this guy because
- 54:33this guy stats are good, but he's the cleaner.
- 54:36Yellow flag is also on the field.
- 54:39Every much, every snap whereas Steve is rotating Heavily.
- 54:42Okay. Okay, well good on me to go flag
- 54:46over Steve. Here are a couple things to
- 54:49testicle e. We got to know about my only
- 54:51defense, this is not a good defense.
- 54:53We should score points on this defense.
- 54:56They literally undisciplined lots of flags.
- 54:59Lots of Bloom coverage, has lots of being out of position in the
- 55:03Run game, there will be opportunities.
- 55:05Now when they are clicking, they've got athlete's so it
- 55:10looks really good but when they are off you can do a lot of
- 55:14things against them and you can't and people have done
- 55:16things all year against them. They are the worst red zone
- 55:20defense in the country. They are 130 of one actually.
- 55:25There t 129 because Arizona is just as bad in Arizona is an
- 55:29absolutely shit, show out in out in the Pac-12 right now.
- 55:35But basically if you get inside the 20, You score, ninety-seven
- 55:39percent of the time? 97 percent of time.
- 55:44They're pasty is 115 in the country.
- 55:47They're given up a ton of pass yards.
- 55:49There. Run defense is better but it's
- 55:51still middle of the packets not Elite at all.
- 55:56And lastly, they're giving up almost 30 points, a game, which
- 56:01is again in the bottom half. So this isn't a good defense.
- 56:09Nope, if hate to say this, I don't know, buddy.
- 56:13I don't know the autonomy. The JC price has if we don't get
- 56:16to like 30 plus on this team, he should fire cornelison.
- 56:21He should just move. Yeah.
- 56:24If I'm j.c. price, what what degree can I fire?
- 56:27People, I'm fully on pulling pulling the Dwight card
- 56:32assistant to the regional manager.
- 56:33Can I fire people do? I have that Authority?
- 56:38That's all. All right, Brian.
- 56:40Well, let's, um, let's flip and take a look at their offense,
- 56:43you know, retinol, Ashlee Steele, the o.c. right dip.
- 56:47Did you get fired? All right, so what are we seeing
- 56:50from the lashley's offense? Yes, so they primarily come out
- 56:54in 11 personnel, even in to tight end packages.
- 56:58One of those tight ends is usually flexed.
- 56:59So they're essentially subbing in a tight end for their slot or
- 57:05one of their other outside receivers.
- 57:07It's kind of that RPO a little bit of are a Concepts.
- 57:11The big, the big player. We're looking at out of the gate
- 57:15that we really need to shut down.
- 57:17If because, while they have three very talented Layers in
- 57:23the passing game. If they are able to run the
- 57:26ball, consistently that passing game opens up significantly.
- 57:29So Jaylen night running back. He's not a home run hitter but
- 57:35he is a guy that consistently gets positive yards in the
- 57:39running game and when they're able to do that and stay ahead
- 57:43of the sticks that that's when that are eight is really able to
- 57:46shine, like I said, more of a grind, it out, type back, and he
- 57:52will be used. The screen game occasionally but
- 57:54it's not his specialty. They'll swing it out to him and
- 57:57out of the backfield as well, but he's more or less kind of
- 58:01between the tackles will get outside but he's a guy that's
- 58:06going to get them some good yardage on first and second
- 58:09down, set them up really good where they can let those skilled
- 58:13receivers make plays when they've got the whole field of
- 58:17work with. Yeah, you know, night and took
- 58:20over for Cameron Harris. As you know, damanhur there's
- 58:24obviously was having a really good season, you know, almost
- 58:27averaging six yards, a carry before he got banged up but 90,
- 58:31no slouch. I mean, 510 190.
- 58:33He was a top 154 star when he came out of Deerfield Beach,
- 58:36Florida. You know Brian's already talked
- 58:39about, he's not that home run hitter and it shows in the
- 58:42statistics he's only averaging four point two per carry.
- 58:45So, he's in that four to five range, 493 yards. 55 see me five
- 58:50touchdowns Brian mentioned he does have some past game
- 58:54capabilities, he does and it kind of shows Brian when you
- 58:59talk about more than the screen game, he's only got 15.
- 59:01Receptions 230 yards though. So when he gets those he can
- 59:07turn them into significantly. Profession are significantly
- 59:12product 'full catches three TVs there.
- 59:16So definitely a guy we've got to contain Because, you know, the
- 59:23425 is we always say five. If it's four to five, I think
- 59:30you highlighted run. He's getting seven, he's getting
- 59:34eight, he's getting three. He's not getting 18, he's not
- 59:37getting 17. So, really key there because
- 59:43when you have a Young quarterback, who we talk about
- 59:45next, Tyler Van Dyke, you've got to have some semblance of a
- 59:49running game and in Van Dyke, don't get me wrong talented, kid
- 59:53composite for star was the top player in Connecticut when he
- 59:56came out. Out 64, 220 for good-sized solid
- 1:00:02step so far for his first year. 61 percent completion.
- 1:00:07Nine and a half per tempt. I really like that number 21, 93
- 1:00:12yards, 19, touchdown, six interceptions.
- 1:00:16The one thing I noticed did not have much rushing stats crime
- 1:00:19is, is he got a little wiggle or see more of a statue back there?
- 1:00:25Not so much a statue but there. Our offense is designed to get
- 1:00:28the ball out of his hands quick. He will occasionally try to
- 1:00:33scramble to get some yards if something isn't there but he is
- 1:00:36definitely trying to sling the ball down the field.
- 1:00:39Okay. And I mean he's pretty accurate
- 1:00:42with the football so that's that's the big thing.
- 1:00:44We're going to start off with. He's got good accuracy, he
- 1:00:48doesn't have a super strong arm but he can make all the throws
- 1:00:51at the offense requires of him. But the biggest thing that I
- 1:00:55noticed that he's very much a rhythm quarterback.
- 1:00:59So when he's hitting he's very hard to stop.
- 1:01:03If you get him off his game, it can affect the next play.
- 1:01:07It can affect the easy throws. All of that.
- 1:01:10So I think that's the thing we need to think about as we're
- 1:01:14approaching him from a defense perspective is, how can we keep
- 1:01:17him out of rhythm? What can we do to make him Miss
- 1:01:21and then that Miss caused him to make a mess?
- 1:01:25Okay, those unforced errors. So that that's the big thing we
- 1:01:28need to focus on because if when he gets in Rhythm he's very good
- 1:01:31but when he's out of rhythm, it's very hit-or-miss and he is
- 1:01:35prone to some under throws if he can't step in.
- 1:01:37So getting pressure in his face. Is going to be important to
- 1:01:40hopefully make him make some mistakes with the football and
- 1:01:44he will occasionally take some Chances with the football.
- 1:01:46He takes some calculated risk with the football.
- 1:01:48So there will be opportunities to get an interception.
- 1:01:50He doesn't throw a ton, but he did have a couple big ones
- 1:01:55against FS you last week. All right.
- 1:02:01Let's flip over Brawn. Let's talk about the offensive
- 1:02:03line. Let's do a quick review of them
- 1:02:07just a couple season just a couple things you know the team
- 1:02:12itself is 94th in rushing not really a good Russian teen.
- 1:02:17Even with the numbers hairs just pulling up earlier in the season
- 1:02:20they're giving up sex. Even when you talk about what
- 1:02:24you'd probably worried Miami fans more than us and make us
- 1:02:28kind of know. Open our eyes and dies, get big,
- 1:02:33you're talking about this, RPO quick.
- 1:02:36Throat are a type offense. Usually, that's done to prevent
- 1:02:40sacks Troy right? Prevent sex.
- 1:02:44There are 113 in the nation in sacks allowed, they've given up
- 1:02:5030, they're averaging 30 game you know close to 200 yards, 183
- 1:02:55yards, given up in those sacks. What did you see on tape?
- 1:03:01Because the the staff say they've got some, got some
- 1:03:06struggles. Yeah, I mean, I'd say their
- 1:03:09password was actually a little bit better than average but
- 1:03:14because they run the RPO and because they were accustomed to
- 1:03:21Quarterback like dear King that while he much preferred to throw
- 1:03:25the ball from the pocket. If things weren't there, he had
- 1:03:29the athletic ability to escape get some first downs, at least
- 1:03:34avoid the sacks, things like that.
- 1:03:36So with Van Dyke back there, that's a different story.
- 1:03:42So they're giving a more Sykes sex.
- 1:03:45As a result of you don't have a guy that can kind of put a
- 1:03:50Band-Aid on some of those blemishes in the passing game.
- 1:03:52Now, they are below average in run blocking and it shows on the
- 1:03:59tape. They do an okay job of getting a
- 1:04:03decent push where they can get some yardage but they don't get
- 1:04:07to the second level very well. So a lot of these gains you
- 1:04:11know, we talked about it with The with the average per carry,
- 1:04:14they're not getting past the linebackers.
- 1:04:18When they go up the middle they're not getting past the
- 1:04:20guys controlling The Spill area when it gets spilled outside.
- 1:04:24So I'm actually a question. Yep, just looking at the tape
- 1:04:28that you look at the last few days.
- 1:04:30Is this, just is this limitation athletically or is this just
- 1:04:33terrible technique? It's a little bit of both, I'd
- 1:04:39say more more technique. I think, you know, we're talking
- 1:04:43about Miami and this, this isn't a knock-on necessarily Manny
- 1:04:47Diaz but it really goes back several several Cycles.
- 1:04:52Just Miami overall being an undisciplined team on both sides
- 1:04:55of the football, and I don't know if it's just attention to
- 1:04:59detail or whatever it is, but they have ability but they're
- 1:05:03not always consistent with it. They're not consistent with
- 1:05:05their Technique and this is part of what's going on with their
- 1:05:08offensive line is that they'll have those really good snaps and
- 1:05:12then they have bad snaps but as an offensive line that's a
- 1:05:15bigger fucking issue because you got to have five guys working.
- 1:05:17Together makes sense, right? Yep.
- 1:05:24All right, bro. One thing they one thing they do
- 1:05:26when they throw some of those bubble screens, they do full cut
- 1:05:30like five guys, cutting lineman's knees.
- 1:05:34So that's one thing to look for. It's going to frustrate the shit
- 1:05:38out of some defensive linemen, so hopefully we don't get any
- 1:05:43stupid personal fouls because of that shit.
- 1:05:45But you know, it is what it is but more than likely they'll
- 1:05:49return, the favor on the personal foul side.
- 1:05:51So there's, you know, it might be Offsetting penalties and all
- 1:05:56these will offset replay the down.
- 1:05:58All right, Brian. Let's take a look quick at three
- 1:06:00targets for Van Dyke here. I want to start with the
- 1:06:03Oklahoma transfer Carlton. Rambo is a composite forced our
- 1:06:08top 30 wide receiver. When he came out he was at
- 1:06:11Oklahoma, for three seasons had decent numbers little over 1,100
- 1:06:14yards, 9 touchdowns obviously transferred out of there because
- 1:06:17they're always Rolling In You wideouts.
- 1:06:20Really tearing it up this year really showing out 64.
- 1:06:24Receptions, 950 44 yards, almost averaging, 15 yards, perceptions
- 1:06:30and five touchdowns 61 185. What did you see on tape from a
- 1:06:36really cool name? Yeah, he's got a cool name,
- 1:06:40right? Rambo as I mean, all that, it's
- 1:06:43kind of hard to kind of kind of hard to beat that.
- 1:06:45Yeah, he is their best outside receiver.
- 1:06:47Yeah, best outside receiver, he's Our primary deep threat,
- 1:06:51he's our primary big-play weapon.
- 1:06:53If they need plays down the field, that's who they're
- 1:06:55targeting. He's got great hands and does a
- 1:06:57good job of high point of the ball, if it's thrown up in
- 1:07:01one-on-one situations but he can be taken out of the game with
- 1:07:04some bracket coverage. We saw FSU employed that a lot,
- 1:07:09especially in the first half, they figured out how to kind of
- 1:07:13work around that in the second half last week, but they were
- 1:07:17able to kind of slow him down for the majority of the first
- 1:07:20half. F with that bracket coverage,
- 1:07:22keeping a safety over the top. So that might be something that
- 1:07:25we look at doing as well, but if we're not able to do that, he
- 1:07:31will eat, can throw some big plays on the board in the, in
- 1:07:34the passing game. Alright, you anticipate wall,
- 1:07:38we're on him. Yeah, as much as possible.
- 1:07:43All right, all right. Let's take a look next at Mike,
- 1:07:46Harley a five foot eleven hundred 82 pounds wide receiver
- 1:07:52382 for the year yard watch 41, receptions for touchdowns a
- 1:07:57four-star out of st. Thomas Aquinas, one of the big
- 1:08:00high schools down in the State of Florida.
- 1:08:02I'm just looking based on size. Is he the slot guy or she played
- 1:08:06some other positions to he is the slot guy.
- 1:08:08Yes, sir. You are correct.
- 1:08:10They like him on quick, Slant six, bubbles digs outs, shallow
- 1:08:15crossers. The Usual Suspects in that air
- 1:08:19raid. And they'll occasionally send
- 1:08:21him on a non deep like a seam or something like that, but they
- 1:08:24really liked his underneath quickness.
- 1:08:26It gives them a good Target to get the ball out of Van Dyke's
- 1:08:29hands quickly. So he's that guy.
- 1:08:31That is the either the primary right route for Van Dyke or the
- 1:08:36primary check down in most of those route Concepts.
- 1:08:42Well, you talked about them being a too tight end set.
- 1:08:45Is it just the way the formation set up that he regardless of
- 1:08:48whether they're in a to tight end set or not?
- 1:08:50He's In some sort of slight variation?
- 1:08:53Yes, a lot of times when they'll Flex there, they'll bring on an
- 1:08:57extra tight end, but that sometimes they'll take off Smith
- 1:08:59who was the other primary outside wide receiver for that
- 1:09:03second tight end and still keep Harley on the field sometimes,
- 1:09:07Harley comes off but they're primarily they're primarily in
- 1:09:1011 personnel, most the game unless they're going into some
- 1:09:14sort of short yardage package, that's really the only time.
- 1:09:18They actually bring two tight ends in line.
- 1:09:21Goal line, situations, short short, yardage situations.
- 1:09:25Got it. Alright Bronn, tell me if you've
- 1:09:28heard this one 65 to 45 tight end.
- 1:09:31Yeah, I've heard that one before me every week, I swear to God,
- 1:09:36we had one of those when the season started we did and
- 1:09:41looking like, probably probably not coming back, which is let me
- 1:09:44say it. But will Mallory 65 to 45 tight
- 1:09:47end solid seasons and so forth. 24.
- 1:09:50Ian's 206 yards three touchdowns about 11:9 her reception from
- 1:09:55Jacksonville. Florida composite four-star, his
- 1:09:58dad has some lineage here, Dad was an NFL player back in the
- 1:10:02day, what are we seeing from Mallory?
- 1:10:05Is he the guy flexing or see the guy staying in live?
- 1:10:07Most of the time he will flex but he also is the number one in
- 1:10:13line guys. Well usually when they bring the
- 1:10:15other guy in he's more of a true.
- 1:10:17True blocker zelflex him out. To be a little more versatile
- 1:10:22but he's good with the stick, movers the Slants, the ends, the
- 1:10:25hitches, the drags, but they will send him on some some more
- 1:10:29unique routes seems and wheels to stretch the field.
- 1:10:33He caught a big wheel route up the sideline against Florida,
- 1:10:36state had some good run after the catch on that as well.
- 1:10:40So he's got some athleticism, he's not just a run, the route,
- 1:10:45catch it and go down type guy, he will get you some some yards
- 1:10:48after the catch. So he's somebody got a Watch for
- 1:10:51and he does pretty good in the red zone as well.
- 1:10:55All right, so there is sort of Know The Enemy, some players and
- 1:11:00things to look for from these players.
- 1:11:02As we do every week, we take a look at the version of the
- 1:11:05Hokies and we've gotten down to the lamba.
- 1:11:07We just keep redoing it. Redoing it, redoing it, some
- 1:11:11things, stay the same right, Brian?
- 1:11:13What's the one thing? Say the same.
- 1:11:15What stays the same options every week every week for a
- 1:11:19while now, continue the commitment to the running game
- 1:11:22Run and it's, it's Port in this week.
- 1:11:27We can talk a little bit more about that.
- 1:11:29You want to go into some details here.
- 1:11:32Why is it important? All right, so if you remember
- 1:11:35how we attacked this Miami team last year, we didn't run the
- 1:11:40ball. We took shots, we empty the
- 1:11:42backfield who didn't keep a lot of help in to help on Roche and
- 1:11:48Phillips. And we got our asses 8.
- 1:11:51We did even though they had lead in the fourth quarter.
- 1:11:54Yeah, which is what we were getting beat up.
- 1:11:56We were getting beat up. Any got pop several times that
- 1:11:58day I can remember. Yep.
- 1:12:00So that's how you lose to Miami. How you win against.
- 1:12:04Miami is establish the Run game. Keep them off balance.
- 1:12:08Don't let them tee off. And we should be able to be in a
- 1:12:14good position where we can still use the majority of our passing
- 1:12:17attack because we've been able to establish the Run.
- 1:12:20Well we got to I mean they're terrible against the pass.
- 1:12:23So I mean I have a feeling I know what you're going to say.
- 1:12:27What do we need to do this week? Passing attack needs to be
- 1:12:32similar to what we saw against do, using all parts of the field
- 1:12:36but take calculated shots because they will give up those
- 1:12:40big plays. Well, and they're going to
- 1:12:42challenge us at the line of scrimmage because of the way
- 1:12:44they play and like to attack and bring pressure.
- 1:12:47So we're going to have to hit some some shots, downfield when
- 1:12:50those opportunities are presented, but we also have to
- 1:12:53use the whole feel, especially the intermediate area to kind
- 1:12:58of, keep them off balance. So they're not expecting
- 1:13:01everything that every time we drop back that we're, you know,
- 1:13:04chucking it Chuck, it'll fade down the sideline.
- 1:13:09All right. If Brad's got anything left,
- 1:13:16he's got to right? Yeah, yeah.
- 1:13:18Brad, Carl Nelson. Better be emptying the damn
- 1:13:20clip. And that's for our sake, and
- 1:13:23that's for his sake because as I said, if he doesn't do something
- 1:13:28big, these next two weeks, he's going to be coaching at Nathan
- 1:13:30Hale High School in Tulsa. There you go.
- 1:13:37Empty the clip corn. Anything you got.
- 1:13:39Do it. If not Jase, he's going to fire
- 1:13:41you and leave you on the tarmac to other big things Brown.
- 1:13:46We've been talking about already talked about with the red zone
- 1:13:48defense, they're bad touchdowns touchdowns overfilled Gold's in
- 1:13:54the way it looks, you know, they're giving up touchdowns to
- 1:13:57feel gold. I don't like a two to one ratio,
- 1:14:00so you get down there. You have a better chance of
- 1:14:02scoring a touchdown in a Real gold, but we've got to push it
- 1:14:06in. We've got to put the pressure on
- 1:14:08them because of a not having an explosive running game.
- 1:14:14If we do it we did like we did against, you get a couple scores
- 1:14:17ahead. It's going to force Van Dyke to
- 1:14:20take the risk. It's going to force him to push
- 1:14:21the ball down which With not a really good offensive line that
- 1:14:26has some issues and only really one deep threat.
- 1:14:31It's going to get them uncomfortable quick.
- 1:14:32Right? Yeah.
- 1:14:34And you know, talk about touchdowns versus field goals,
- 1:14:38the only reason that the FSU Miami game was closed because in
- 1:14:42the first half FSU had a couple drives where they did did well
- 1:14:47and then got off the field and a couple drives where they had to
- 1:14:49settle for three. You know, that could have easily
- 1:14:54the way that that first half went that could have easily been
- 1:14:57a 28-nothing, Thirty One, nothing game at half but it
- 1:15:04wasn't 31-7. You know, whatever it maybe it
- 1:15:07could have been a big, big gap for them to clear it.
- 1:15:12I mean, ultimately Miami lost the game, but it came down to
- 1:15:16the damn wire where, you know, they could have stepped on their
- 1:15:18throats in the first half, they were able to finish a couple
- 1:15:21Extra drives. There we go.
- 1:15:24All right, last piece we've talked about Brian and now, it's
- 1:15:27even after what was revealed today even more important, got
- 1:15:32to keep racking up, right? We already know this, we don't
- 1:15:36have really the backups that can compete even less.
- 1:15:39So against although they have their Miss lapses, but an
- 1:15:43athletic, man, any defense against a backup quarterback,
- 1:15:46just spells disaster. Yeah, you want to make sure that
- 1:15:51if your quarterback is taking hits, it's because he's taking
- 1:15:54hits in the read option game making choices taking hits
- 1:15:58because he had wide open. Real Estate to take off and run.
- 1:16:02You don't want him taking big shots, standing in the pocket in
- 1:16:07the back field, that's what you don't want.
- 1:16:09You don't want him taking this unnecessary sacks, you don't
- 1:16:13want to give up sex. You want to limit the number of
- 1:16:16sacks limit, the number of hits on your quarterback.
- 1:16:19And make sure when he is getting hit, it's because of choices.
- 1:16:22He's made within the framework of the call.
- 1:16:25All right, let's flip over to defense front.
- 1:16:29I know something you love seeing last week was how the Gap
- 1:16:32Integrity, especially up in the front seven stage much better.
- 1:16:37He said, looked as good as it looks since you and see.
- 1:16:41And even though they don't have the best run line, Usage.
- 1:16:47Lee just told me like we we can't we can't slip.
- 1:16:51We can't give a team that doesn't do this.
- 1:16:54Well in opportunity to actually have some positives from this.
- 1:17:00Yeah, we want to keep them at or below their their average
- 1:17:05somewhere below that 4.5 range per carry.
- 1:17:09We want to make this as hard for them as possible.
- 1:17:12We want to make sure that they don't get chunk yardage or Good
- 1:17:15yardage on first downs. Consistently.
- 1:17:18And that's what FSU was able to do early in that game.
- 1:17:20And I know FSU has a pretty Elite defensive line but I think
- 1:17:24we should be able to do something similar with our
- 1:17:26defensive line and linebacker combination there.
- 1:17:29So I'm hoping that we're able to come out there.
- 1:17:31Maintain our gaps, keep make them earn every yard in the
- 1:17:35running game and then Force Van Dyke to have to go out there and
- 1:17:38make plays. Yep.
- 1:17:40And then you talk, you've kind of said this a couple times
- 1:17:44already Making plays and limited the big plays right horse them
- 1:17:49Drive. Yeah, we can't get beat by
- 1:17:52those. Those big plays to Rambo.
- 1:17:56You know, I'd much rather see us give up a bad third down.
- 1:18:03To Chris Harley, not Chris Harley not Crystal my Carly, I'm
- 1:18:09like barley. Yeah, yeah, I'd much rather give
- 1:18:14have them give up a first down of my Carly, doing something
- 1:18:17underneath and then hit a big play, because our defense has
- 1:18:20shown that if they give a first down, they'll come back and play
- 1:18:23the next three pretty damn hard. And sometimes that'll get us off
- 1:18:27the field. So, I'd much rather us you give
- 1:18:32up the 10 to 15 yards Order and Live to play another series of
- 1:18:35downs, then give up the big play, and all of a sudden
- 1:18:38they're in there in scoring range in one play.
- 1:18:41Yeah, the next thing we discussed was keeping Van Dyke
- 1:18:46behind the sticks. Obviously, with a Young
- 1:18:48quarterback, anything between to me.
- 1:18:53I what I tell you earlier, Brown, third and five third and
- 1:18:55six That's where I'll get them at every employee, third and six
- 1:19:00or more would be ideal every time or bears.
- 1:19:02Most, every time I was World, think when you get 24, it's just
- 1:19:06too many potential options. We talked about our run defense
- 1:19:09Brian's been focusing on Gap, Integrity, but your third and
- 1:19:13four and you're lining up in your Miami.
- 1:19:17And even though you don't have the best offensive line, well,
- 1:19:19they have their own issues. We have our own issues with are
- 1:19:22rushing defense. We know that third and fourth,
- 1:19:25listen, just just take a shot. We might we might they might
- 1:19:29miss the tackle and instead of they called us at to we got the
- 1:19:34four and a half and we got a first down so keep it on behind
- 1:19:37the sticks because they are just an average third down conversion
- 1:19:42team. Only about 40% about 60 63 in
- 1:19:46the nation. They're literally right smack
- 1:19:47dab in the middle. So it's something that they
- 1:19:50don't excel at but they aren't absolutely Dreadful at.
- 1:19:54So if we can keep that if we can keep them at their average to
- 1:20:00below average again more swings in our favor.
- 1:20:04Absolutely. If we put them in situations,
- 1:20:07where they also are really buying the six and those third
- 1:20:11and long situations. You know that takes some of Of
- 1:20:15Harley and Mallory's routes out of the out of the game, right?
- 1:20:20All of a sudden you can't run those shallow hitches.
- 1:20:22You can't run those shallow ins. You can't run the drags or if
- 1:20:26you do you're throwing it for in front of the sticks and hoping
- 1:20:29they make play the more we can do that the better the more they
- 1:20:33have to force the ball to Rambo in bad coverage areas the
- 1:20:38better. So that's what I think is big
- 1:20:43and the other the last thing Is going to be make them settle for
- 1:20:47three points. If they do get into the scoring
- 1:20:51area, get off the damn field, make them kick the field goal
- 1:20:56and settle for three points. Yep, and last week, we did that
- 1:21:02a couple times we got scored, you know, in a couple of times
- 1:21:07but we also they kicked a field goal and they missed a field
- 1:21:12goal. Yep.
- 1:21:13So some improvements on the red zone defense but we know it's a
- 1:21:17struggle. But getting down there and
- 1:21:20again, it's holding, right? Just bend, don't you?
- 1:21:23You don't break with this team. We're going to have a fight and
- 1:21:25shot. Exactly.
- 1:21:29So it's been one hellacious you know roughly what 2436 hours
- 1:21:37about 36. Yeah.
- 1:21:39Six hours over 36 hours and we got to sit here and make a
- 1:21:43prediction on this game, you know, what days gone.
- 1:21:49But there are still pieces here that we know that could
- 1:21:52debilitate this team from winning.
- 1:21:55So Braun, what do you say to the score of this game?
- 1:22:00I think JC price gets this team up, has them playing with
- 1:22:04confidence has been playing with some fire with some juice and
- 1:22:09probably playing a little bit more loose than they're used to
- 1:22:12playing. I like them to get the W down
- 1:22:17there. I thought I've got it 34-31.
- 1:22:21I think that we do a good job of moving the football somewhat
- 1:22:26consistently against this defense.
- 1:22:28I think we get some extra situations there because this
- 1:22:33team will give you first downs. They will give you free first
- 1:22:36downs. They will give you free five
- 1:22:38yards. They were heavily heavily
- 1:22:40penalized against FSU in. Are heavily heavily, penalized
- 1:22:45all season. So, I don't expect that to
- 1:22:48change against us. We just got to be able to
- 1:22:51capitalize on that on those opportunities.
- 1:22:54Yeah. And I'm actually really not that
- 1:22:57far behind you. Just a few here and there.
- 1:22:59I'm at 3127 Okies. I think he goes back as I think
- 1:23:04we score more times in the Red Zone.
- 1:23:06The native I think we push it in a couple more times where our
- 1:23:10defense holds because as you get closer and takes the threat of
- 1:23:14Rambo away and and you talked about penalties brine, I think
- 1:23:21let me see if I have it up here. Yes, 14 for 105 yards versus
- 1:23:27FSU. I think that literally there's
- 1:23:31going to be a drive where they're going to have be on the
- 1:23:33doorstep of stopping us. They're going to do something
- 1:23:35stupid and we're going to go down to where touchdown and
- 1:23:38Going to be the game. So we're both going Hokies this
- 1:23:41week into your point JC's, going to have this team up and I think
- 1:23:46JC might be scaring the life out of a few people.
- 1:23:48If they start doing dumb things and you know who I'm talking
- 1:23:50about, all right, Ron, let's flip it over.
- 1:23:53Now, Saturday, pick them's crime, 5952.
- 1:23:58And one, I'm 64 44 and one. We're going to start with the
- 1:24:01ACC Juke Louisville. Louisville land, 20 brine.
- 1:24:07That 20 is a big number but after seeing do Clive and then
- 1:24:13even though Louisville just had the game of their life against
- 1:24:16Syracuse, I can't see the do defense slowing down Syracuse.
- 1:24:22They didn't slow us down. They haven't Sloan anybody down
- 1:24:25all year. 42 actually go higher 4920, Louisville wins.
- 1:24:35Yeah I'm actually right there with you.
- 1:24:37I think Louisville's got just got too much offense.
- 1:24:39This is just a bad matchup for Duke.
- 1:24:43This is a worst matchup for them, in my, in my opinion, then
- 1:24:46it was us so you will hear. Alright, next game, Run the real
- 1:24:53big one. down in Death Valley, the number 10 Wake Forest, Demon
- 1:25:00Deacons Travel down to Clemson. Clemson is a four and a half
- 1:25:05Point favorite. What do you say on this game?
- 1:25:11I'm taking wait because this is coming down to a field goal,
- 1:25:13either way. So I'm going to go wake here,
- 1:25:19I'm actually going to take wake out, right?
- 1:25:20But I think it's going to come down to our last blast Drive
- 1:25:24field goal. That's going to win it for one
- 1:25:26team or the other. Yeah, I think it's comes down to
- 1:25:29wakes defense and I think wakes defense is going to stop pumps
- 1:25:33in a few times. The Clemson defense is going to
- 1:25:37stop. Wake up you times as well but at
- 1:25:40least you feel with the Wake defense they make adjustments,
- 1:25:44they try different things. They, you know, they're going to
- 1:25:47try something. And the Clemson offense is just
- 1:25:53looked bad, maybe a field goal, but if I like wake outright to.
- 1:25:59So, if I'm getting points with it, you know, give me that.
- 1:26:03All right, Brian, I'm still trying to figure out this line
- 1:26:07right here, Florida State, BC, somehow.
- 1:26:13Someway BC is only favored by two points.
- 1:26:19You made the point earlier FS, you should have had the doors
- 1:26:22blown off of them last weekend, right?
- 1:26:27Again smile FSU FSU is was about to blow the doors off Miami and
- 1:26:31then they okay, yeah, okay, I misunderstood that.
- 1:26:37I did not watch all that game. I watch the end and saw our pick
- 1:26:40go down in flames, but that is 0.
- 1:26:42The first half, the first half Florida, State should have been
- 1:26:45up. Like I said, 2831 27.
- 1:26:50All right, like Miami just kept shooting themselves in the foot
- 1:26:52the whole first half, got it. Well regardless here and there I
- 1:26:57think be seized a better Coach team.
- 1:26:59I think BC with jerk of its slowly getting back.
- 1:27:02It's going to continue to be better and only lay into points
- 1:27:06against FSU. I think they win easily by 7 or
- 1:27:0910. Give me BC.
- 1:27:12Not so fast buddy. FSU is going to win this one
- 1:27:14out, right? I think they are trending in the
- 1:27:18right direction. I don't Think that they are a
- 1:27:20good football team yet but they are playing better football.
- 1:27:26And I think they are able to do just enough to scrape out a win
- 1:27:31against BC, so I'll take FS you. All right?
- 1:27:34So they'll be going into the game versus Florida trying to
- 1:27:39get Bowl eligibility, which, if Florida wins this weekend in
- 1:27:43Florida is playing Missouri. Who's pretty much, probably the
- 1:27:48worst team in the SEC. That wouldn't that be nice or or
- 1:27:53Florida losses to Missouri. The battle is For Florida,
- 1:27:57Florida State who can become Bowl eligible.
- 1:28:00Who saw that coming? Well I'd say Florida fans in.
- 1:28:03See that coming Florida State probably did but all right Brian
- 1:28:08next one, Georgia Tech Notre Dame Notre Dame land 17 and a
- 1:28:13half. Yes, you get to pick this one
- 1:28:17first. Yeah but I'm taking the Irish
- 1:28:20I'm taking the Irish all the way.
- 1:28:23I still don't trust Georgia Tech.
- 1:28:25Heck, they fucked me a lot but I still do not trust them.
- 1:28:29I think the Irish are going to be able to run the ball against
- 1:28:31them. I think they're going to be able
- 1:28:32to throw the ball, against them better than they have most of
- 1:28:36the year. I think they'll see some success
- 1:28:39there as well. So and I don't think Georgia
- 1:28:41Tech has any answer for that. Marcus Freeman defense.
- 1:28:44So maybe the average, yeah, I'm with you on that.
- 1:28:48I'm taking the Irish too. And it's Georgia Tech's Dreadful
- 1:28:55offensively Notre Dame. Looks like the last few weeks
- 1:28:58they finally kind of found exactly what they want to do
- 1:29:01offensive ly. They they could have probably
- 1:29:06beat UVA by 14 to 21 more but they just kind of, you know,
- 1:29:15it's like that it's like the boxing match where the guy
- 1:29:19knocks the other guy down the first five.
- 1:29:22Grounds knocks him down once we got keep and it's just like, I'm
- 1:29:25just going to jab you. We just met.
- 1:29:27Yeah, I think they'll turn a little bit more against Georgia
- 1:29:31Tech. They know.
- 1:29:32Now, they are clearly in the playoff picture, if since he
- 1:29:34drops. So I'm with you.
- 1:29:37On the Irish are a Braun, we discussed taking this one off
- 1:29:42the board. So I'm going to say this if
- 1:29:48Brandon Armstrong plays this gets pulled off the board for
- 1:29:52both of us, pit UVA pit Lane 14 and a half.
- 1:29:57If Brandon Armstrong doesn't play, pit is going to beat them
- 1:30:02by 40 points. What news?
- 1:30:05He's a jerk. If he plays it might cover this.
- 1:30:12But it probably would be it would make me I would have to do
- 1:30:16a lot more research and a lot more digging but no Brandon
- 1:30:20Armstrong taking pit laying 14 happens.
- 1:30:24Yeah. If no Brandon Armstrong I'm
- 1:30:26taking pit as well. If he plays I'll take UVA and if
- 1:30:31you want to we can throw the Marshal UNCC game on here, just
- 1:30:37as a buffer game in case that one gets thrown out.
- 1:30:40Yeah, you don't do it. It up there.
- 1:30:42What's let me find the line real quick.
- 1:30:45You put it on the rundown. Marshall why we're doing
- 1:30:50Marshall UNCC will Healey Charles, huh?
- 1:30:56Two guys, we have been looking at significantly.
- 1:31:01Let me get this up here to my betting site.
- 1:31:06We're kind of, I want to say it was fourteen and a half.
- 1:31:10As well. 15 Marshall is a road favorite Lane 15.
- 1:31:19Brian, give me a sec. One thing.
- 1:31:28Give me Marshall. Give me Marshall.
- 1:31:34All right I'm gonna take Marshals well.
- 1:31:37Okay Huff's Huff's my dude Huff's my dude.
- 1:31:43Sorry, I'm not gonna bury the lead but yeah I'm sorry guys I
- 1:31:47like no reasons. Then let's flip the next Braun.
- 1:31:52Lets go to Syracuse NC State. NC State is lame, eleven and a
- 1:32:01half. NC State off a tough loss
- 1:32:04against Wake Forest. Yeah, we saber on.
- 1:32:11You know what? I think Sean Tucker is going to
- 1:32:18be pleased with his performance, but disappointed in the outcome,
- 1:32:24So I think that that's enough for me to go cues.
- 1:32:27They're going to lose, but they'll keep it close.
- 1:32:32I think they lose, I don't think they keep it close best defense.
- 1:32:36They've seen all year, they just played one of the worst EU
- 1:32:38tenses, and they couldn't get anything going.
- 1:32:43The biggest thing about this game is location, I forgot where
- 1:32:49it is. It's at NC State.
- 1:32:53Yeah, I'm gonna I'm gonna lay it.
- 1:32:54I think NC State was just came by 14 points.
- 1:32:57All right, let's take a look at three very crucial games through
- 1:33:01the playoffs for on. Let's go a little Pac-12, it
- 1:33:05will not be packed full of after dark.
- 1:33:06It's actually going to be a 730. Kick organ is Pac-12 Primetime.
- 1:33:11East Coast. Hey Morgan going into Utah Rice
- 1:33:16Eccles. Utah, ranked 24th Utah, the
- 1:33:19three-point It, I've got to take organ, as hard as it is to play
- 1:33:30Down tricycles. Even mean I'm just had an
- 1:33:36epiphany, Brian. But yeah, you think two years
- 1:33:41ago? Where were we going?
- 1:33:44Oregon. Had a road game against Arizona
- 1:33:46State. So we riding we're heading.
- 1:33:50We were heading to Blacksburg. Yep, we were heading back that
- 1:33:55night. In organ.
- 1:33:57Remember, they have one loss. They were, they were going to be
- 1:33:59in the playoffs. I'm changing this pick Utah and
- 1:34:04zorgons chances, because I've seen this story Road out once
- 1:34:07before driving down 81 and Justin Herbert, who is
- 1:34:12significantly better player than Anthony Brown down at Arizona
- 1:34:15State and easier place to play than rice equals.
- 1:34:18Could not get it done. Organ chokes.
- 1:34:20It I'm going to have to go against here.
- 1:34:25I think Oregon takes care of business.
- 1:34:27I think they know that they've got a chance here and I think
- 1:34:29they lock it up. I don't think it's going to be
- 1:34:33like that moment when we were looking for a Chipotle after a a
- 1:34:38big a big win against Pitt on bud, Foster's last home game.
- 1:34:42So I will take Oregon here. A big win against Pitt tops
- 1:34:49rails. Sharkey's Wings, hanging out
- 1:34:52with friends, seeing folks, tailgating Lot 10 good times.
- 1:34:58Oh, great times. All right.
- 1:35:00Brian you get to lead this one. Alabama's land 20 against
- 1:35:04Arkansas. Alabama locks up the West with
- 1:35:07this wind. What do you think?
- 1:35:09Alabama's focused. They are locked in.
- 1:35:12They take care of business. They they ruin the the show
- 1:35:15there in Arkansas, so give me Bama here.
- 1:35:19Okay, I'm gonna go slightly against you.
- 1:35:21On this one. Alabama's defense is still
- 1:35:26having some problems if not. It will will machine as usually,
- 1:35:34Nick Saban's defenses are, you know, they are coming off
- 1:35:39against a game against New Mexico state, which I hope New
- 1:35:43Mexico. State got a million dollars out
- 1:35:44of that game. I really do, but Arkansas has
- 1:35:48given up points. Or excuse me, Alabama's been
- 1:35:52given up points. I hate going with this one
- 1:35:56because in my head is either I'm seeing 1721 and that 20 numbers.
- 1:36:01So ugly if I had like 23 I love it but I think Arkansas keeps it
- 1:36:06a little bit closer. Me experts think I still think
- 1:36:09Bama gets to 40. I think Arkansas.
- 1:36:11Just gets to like 20 for like a couple teams have gone against
- 1:36:16Alabama this year. All right Brian couple other
- 1:36:20names Sonny Dykes and SMU against Luke fickle and
- 1:36:25Cincinnati big game because SM you probably should be ranked or
- 1:36:31not but playoff committee going to playoff committee.
- 1:36:35Cincinnati laying 11 and a half points.
- 1:36:39I think fickle knows. He needs this one to be big.
- 1:36:45I think he knows. It's got to make sense in this
- 1:36:48one. I'm taking since he I think
- 1:36:49since he's going to come out focus and I think they're going
- 1:36:52to steamroll us them. You if you out the over-under,
- 1:36:56whatever that is take the over because I think SM you still can
- 1:36:59score some points but I think since he's going to come out and
- 1:37:02pop them in the face a few times early get up big and cruise to a
- 1:37:0820-point victory when they play teams, they need to beat.
- 1:37:13They are focused and play very well.
- 1:37:15Well, I think since he takes care of business, I think this
- 1:37:19is about a 14 to 17 point win. It's not a, not a blowout, but I
- 1:37:23think it easily covers that eleven and a half, all right.
- 1:37:30And next week at East Carolina, be an interesting game to go to.
- 1:37:33All right, last game really big game is essentially an
- 1:37:37elimination game in the Big Ten, whoever loses this game will not
- 1:37:40make the playoffs. No, if ands or buts about it.
- 1:37:44Michigan State. Ohio State Ohio State Lane 19
- 1:37:50points. That's too rich for my blood.
- 1:37:55Give me Mel Tucker and Michigan State.
- 1:37:56That if that was like ten and a half, I might be tempted.
- 1:38:02But 19 is too damn much 19 way too much and I'm with you the
- 1:38:11million 100 million dollar man, Mel Tucker.
- 1:38:15I don't get that contract. I know he's had a good season.
- 1:38:18That is a lot of money to pay for someone with one just One
- 1:38:22season, but I'm with you. Is this isn't?
- 1:38:27That is, I think that's probably what it is.
- 1:38:33Ohio State is not exactly. They're really good offensively.
- 1:38:38They're like Alabama, they have holes defensively.
- 1:38:43And 4228 4230, I think Ohio State wins, but I don't think
- 1:38:52it's by the 19 that people are sick.
- 1:38:54People to see a do produce Defense Forces.
- 1:38:57A Mel Tucker defense, completely different animals.
- 1:39:00Yeah, and I think this one's again.
- 1:39:02I think the lines about a touchdown too heavy for me.
- 1:39:05Yes, it's all going with the how good they looked against Purdue,
- 1:39:09right? Yeah.
- 1:39:12To me should be like between 10 and 12 1919 at all.
- 1:39:17Brian anything breaking over the last hour and 40 minutes.
- 1:39:23Nothing's popped up on my and buddy.
- 1:39:26All right, hour and 40 minutes doesn't shot me.
- 1:39:28We spend a few extra minutes talking about obvious things
- 1:39:32again. Justin Fuente fired or mutually
- 1:39:35agreed to part ways. Hokies are in the search, keep
- 1:39:40you to the grindstone look for the Annals believe everything.
- 1:39:45You read believe nothing. You read.
- 1:39:47Yep. Because there's gonna be a lot
- 1:39:49of smoke and some of its going to be smoke signals and some of
- 1:39:53its going to have some fire attached to it
- 1:39:55abso-freakin'-lutely. So that is going to wrap up this
