- 0:00Kara: How was the Ren Faire?
- 0:01Dani: The Ren faire was awesome.
- 0:03Yeah, it was really fucking awesome.
- 0:05I love dressing up.
- 0:07Kara: Didn't they have people sign in there?
- 0:08Dani: Yes.
- 0:09So they had I wish I had talked to them more.
- 0:12But it was the children's area and they sort of siphon it off to the side.
- 0:17So it's like real chill over there.
- 0:20It was like sensory heaven, very calm and quiet.
- 0:23That's nice.
- 0:23But also lots and lots of children and so I didn't wanna like barge my way to the
- 0:28front of the group to talk to the fairies.
- 0:30Kara: I can sign.
- 0:32Dani: But there were some children doing that, which I thought was really sweet.
- 0:36, I was about four meads deep at this point.
- 0:40Delicious.
- 0:41But during the show, we went to the Children's Nighting ceremony.
- 0:45So that Paolo could be knighted.
- 0:47Kara: Of course.
- 0:47Yeah.
- 0:48Dani: And at the show they brought out a fairy to do like
- 0:53a signing portion of the story.
- 0:55They were telling,
- 0:55Kara: what were they saying?
- 0:57Dani: He was like signing the story of like, it was like a loosely based
- 1:00Midsummer Night's dream situation.
- 1:03And there was just a portion of it that he came up and signed and someone was
- 1:07Reading the story along with him signing, but he didn't do the whole story.
- 1:11Interesting.
- 1:11Yeah, I was really intrigued by that.
- 1:13I wonder if I can learn more.
- 1:15There's a lot of New York Renaissance fair lore.
- 1:17Okay.
- 1:18So I feel like it might be accessible to me.
- 1:21Kara: I'm seeing the show at Playwrights Horizon next month.
- 1:24I'm seeing that Jen Tullock show.
- 1:27She was in Severance she plays the sister and she Oh, she's doing a one woman show.
- 1:32I love her.
- 1:33Yeah.
- 1:34Oh, nothing can take you from the hand of God.
- 1:36They had one ASL interpreter performance at Playwrights Horizon for Nothing
- 1:42Can Take you from the Hand of God.
- 1:44Upcoming things.
- 1:45Very exciting.
- 1:46Oh, another thing I wanted to say was, so you know I booked my trip for Ireland.
- 1:51Dani: Yes.
- 1:51Kara: Yeah.
- 1:52So I'm going over the holidays with my wife and we're gonna
- 1:54be staying with loved ones and.
- 1:58There's a Deaf village in Dublin.
- 2:01It's called Deaf Village, and it's like a state of the art community center.
- 2:05It has everything.
- 2:06Whoa.
- 2:07All of Ireland's accessibility and Deaf organizations operate out of the center.
- 2:12It has a pool, it has a bowling team.
- 2:15They got a theater, that fucking rocks.
- 2:19Right.
- 2:20Dani: So how I know British sign language is quite different.
- 2:24Kara: I bet it's gonna be pretty similar Irish sign.
- 2:27It's probably gonna be.
- 2:27Is it gonna be similar to British, right, because of colonization?
- 2:31Well, yeah, I
- 2:32guess I wonder, I don't know.
- 2:34Actually.
- 2:35I did a very quick Google search and it's pretty similar apparently
- 2:38to French sign language and to BSL.
- 2:41Dani: Okay, well you'll have to go and report back.
- 2:44Kara: I will.
- 2:45And apparently also there's a lot of gender differences in the dialect because
- 2:51know it's very Catholic and a lot of the schools was separated by gender.
- 2:56Dani: Oh wow.
- 2:57That's really interesting.
- 2:59Kara: Yeah.
- 2:59You know how like there's Black American Sign Language?
- 3:01Yeah.
- 3:02And that's because, you know, we have segregated schools and it's
- 3:06kind of a similar concept in Ireland.
- 3:07Wow.
- 3:08Okay.
- 3:08I hadn't even thought of that.
- 3:10Me neither.
- 3:11Wow.
- 3:11Oh my God.
- 3:12I'm so excited for you to see that.
- 3:14I know.
- 3:14I'm so excited.
- 3:16Anyways, yeah.
- 3:17Should we get to the show?
- 3:18Dani: We should get to the show.
- 3:32Kara: Welcome back to Dished At Birth.
- 3:35Welcome back.
- 3:35We're doing episode two, season one, episode two, titled American Gothic,
- 3:41which came out June 13th, 2011.
- 3:44Thank you.
- 3:45Mm-hmm.
- 3:45Thank you.
- 3:46I always have the facts.
- 3:47Do you just wanna get right into it?
- 3:48Yeah.
- 3:49I think
- 3:50Dani: to give a one sentence rundown of this episode.
- 3:54I think there's, you know, these two very different families have moved
- 3:59onto the same property and their differences really come to a head.
- 4:05Kara: Yeah.
- 4:05This is all about the family's differences.
- 4:08Political, religious, everything,
- 4:11Dani: But to start, we open on this.
- 4:13Shot of Daphne waking up in the pool house.
- 4:16And I, my first thought was I loved her shabby chic bed frame
- 4:19that they have her sleeping.
- 4:21Kara: I love your attention to detail.
- 4:24'cause I did not notice that.
- 4:25I just noticed her saying like, hell yeah.
- 4:28Yeah.
- 4:29This is the life.
- 4:29Dani: She, she does look ridiculously happy when she wakes up.
- 4:33Kara: Yeah.
- 4:33She just loses all semblance of her life in East Riverside.
- 4:40Like immediately.
- 4:40Immediately.
- 4:41Dani: And then, oh, we get a shot of her looking out at the pool.
- 4:44Stunning pool.
- 4:45Kara: Beautiful.
- 4:46Dani: We're almost never gonna see anybody swim in that pool.
- 4:49Kara: Very happy to just get to look at that pool.
- 4:52It's a beautiful pool.
- 4:53I would be swimming in that all the time.
- 4:55Yeah.
- 4:55And it's pristine.
- 4:56It's so clean.
- 4:57Dani: Well, it's 'cause they're never using it.
- 4:59I get why Daphne's always like grinning ear to ear in this episode in the house.
- 5:05'cause she is just like, she is made it.
- 5:08Kara: I'm a millionaire now.
- 5:09Dani: Literally probably,
- 5:11Kara: so yeah, she goes down to have breakfast with the Kennishes and
- 5:15I guess no one got the memo yet.
- 5:17'cause everyone is talking over each other and no one is looking at her.
- 5:21This is a Deaf person's nightmare.
- 5:23Dani: Yeah.
- 5:24It was stressing me out watching it.
- 5:26It's extremely stressful.
- 5:27Kara: Have you heard this thing called Dinner Table Syndrome?
- 5:30Dani: No.
- 5:30Explain it to me.
- 5:32Kara: There's a thing in Deaf culture where you know, like a Deaf person
- 5:35is sitting at a table and everyone else is hearing and everyone is
- 5:39speaking and you just have no idea what.
- 5:42What anyone is saying.
- 5:44So you kind of like curl up into your shell.
- 5:46Dani: I had
- 5:47not heard of that.
- 5:48Yeah, but that sounds really awful.
- 5:50DTS Dinner Table Syndrome.
- 5:52So this is a classic example of Dinner Table Syndrome right there.
- 5:56Dani: I think she yeah, conveys that really well.
- 5:59I was stressed out for her.
- 6:01Kara: I was also really stressed because she is not saying, Hey guys,
- 6:06please look at me when you speak.
- 6:08She's just, she's also pretending that she can hear all of this, and I get it.
- 6:13She's 15.
- 6:15These are her like brand new parents.
- 6:16She wants to please them and be the perfect daughter, but like there was a
- 6:20part of me that was like, please speak up.
- 6:23Dani: She just wants to make them happy.
- 6:27I know she like is such a pleaser and it makes me so sad.
- 6:32And also like, I don't know, like Toby makes that comment.
- 6:36Obviously she can't hear him but him saying it's like hanging out with grandpa,
- 6:40I wanted to punch him in the face.
- 6:42Fuck you Toby,
- 6:43that's your sister.
- 6:44Yeah.
- 6:45So that was rough.
- 6:47Didn't Regina in the last episode give Kathryn a rundown of
- 6:50like talk slow, look at her.
- 6:53Look at her.
- 6:54Like you don't have to yell, but like she does need to be able to see you.
- 6:59Kara: Yeah, and I guess Kathryn just like completely forgot and threw all
- 7:02that information out the window and also neglected to tell John Bay and Toby.
- 7:08Dani: I did love, Bay being pouty that.
- 7:11Daphne is eating sugar cereal.
- 7:14Like when she comes to invite them for breakfast.
- 7:16Right?
- 7:16And she's like, yeah, my mom made like popovers and I had never heard of it.
- 7:20And they, Daphne and Regina had a sign for it.
- 7:23They did the sign for cake.
- 7:25Dani: Thank you.
- 7:27I was like, I don't think there's a sign for popover.
- 7:29You would just finger spell that.
- 7:31What people eat popovers.
- 7:33I mean, Daphne says I love popovers so clearly.
- 7:37But part of me was like, maybe she's making this up.
- 7:39Just so she'd be like, absolutely.
- 7:41I do wanna have breakfast with you all.
- 7:42Dani: Yeah, me lying.
- 7:43I love popovers.
- 7:45Oh my God.
- 7:45Yeah.
- 7:45'cause that's
- 7:46Kara: a nice thing you do as a guest,
- 7:48my guess is that's like a scone,
- 7:51Dani: because they did the sign for cake?
- 7:53Kara: We see them in the scene.
- 7:55Mm. They kind of look like kind of like muffins?
- 7:58But like a scone texture.
- 8:01Dani: Okay.
- 8:01I just loved Bay being like, mom made so much food, you get to eat sugar cereal.
- 8:08It's so relatable.
- 8:09I was always really jealous of what my friends could eat at their houses.
- 8:13Kara: Oh no.
- 8:13My parents let me have my sugar cereal, I didn't really eat a lot of it though.
- 8:19I was really into this very niche cereal, which is now discontinued.
- 8:24But it was Kellogg's Product 19, and it was my favorite cereal and my family's
- 8:29favorite cereal in the whole world.
- 8:31And Kellogg, if you read this, I beg of you to bring it back.
- 8:36I beg of you.
- 8:37It was like this cornflake, but it had like a little tang to it.
- 8:40Okay.
- 8:41And I think it was called Product 19, which is not a very fun name,
- 8:44but it had like 19 nutrients, like zinc and potassium and whatever.
- 8:49Dani: Got it.
- 8:49Okay.
- 8:50I did think you were just like, that was the.
- 8:52Like box number, no name.
- 8:54The name of the
- 8:55Kara: cereal is Product 19 and it was a red box and it had
- 8:58giant white, 19 on the box.
- 9:01Well that's why it failed.
- 9:02That's bad marketing.
- 9:04I always had, it was like a health, it was advertised like a healthy cereal
- 9:08and it had like people running kellogg's
- 9:10Dani: bring back product 19.
- 9:12I know.
- 9:12Kara: They discontinued it when I was in high school and my mom bought like
- 9:1720 boxes before we ran out and then I also wrote a letter to Kellogg.
- 9:23Dani: Never heard back.
- 9:24Oh, so this is not your first attempt at reaching out to Kellogg?
- 9:27Kara: Yes.
- 9:28To complain.
- 9:29I reached out when I was like 16.
- 9:30I was like, please.
- 9:32It was my favorite.
- 9:33It was, it had the perfect amount of tang
- 9:35Dani: Kara, 16 is so old to write a letter to Kellogg.
- 9:38I thought you were like eight.
- 9:40Kara: No,
- 9:41Dani: sorry.
- 9:42Kara: It's so good.
- 9:43Oh.
- 9:44Dani: Oh, I love you.
- 9:45Anyway the kids go to school.
- 9:48Emmett arrives to pick up Daphne.
- 9:50I do feel that it is out of character how supportive Regina is of it.
- 9:56Honestly,
- 9:57Kara: I do too.
- 9:59Did Regina do a Google search and realize how dangerous motorcycles
- 10:03Dani: are?
- 10:04Yeah, clearly Regina's like the more like.
- 10:06Quote like, cool mom in this episode.
- 10:09That's like a role she kind of plays in this, but it, I'm so anti motorcycle.
- 10:14And so maybe that's part of it too.
- 10:16Yeah.
- 10:16But it is so dangerous.
- 10:18Like I would never, I would let my kids do a lot of stuff.
- 10:21Like I think I'd be pretty hands off.
- 10:22I would not want them riding on a motorcycle.
- 10:25Kara: No.
- 10:25And I think it'd be very reasonable for Regina not to allow that too.
- 10:29Yeah.
- 10:30You know, if she, she could be fun when she wants to be.
- 10:33Dani: Like John and Kathryn immediately Bayng like, whoa,
- 10:35whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa is a lot.
- 10:38But I do understand.
- 10:39'cause I think I would also freak out,
- 10:41Kara: That Bayng said,
- 10:43Dani: when Bay is like, I drink half a beer and I get grounded for a week
- 10:48and Daphne gets to ride off into the sunset on the motorcycle, I was so
- 10:54pissed off because like Bay you got arrested. Daphne's doing something that
- 10:58I feel is dangerous, but it's legal
- 11:02Kara: that is true.
- 11:03She did not get arrested.
- 11:04She has her mother Regina's full permission to do this.
- 11:09Dani: Bay is drawing comparisons where there are none like.
- 11:14I agree.
- 11:14You were trying to get arrested and you got arrested and now you're mad that
- 11:18your parents grounded you for one week.
- 11:20Kara: I know.
- 11:20Dani: I would've grounded her for so much longer.
- 11:22Kara: I know.
- 11:23Oh, I also wanted to point out where when Emmett picks up Daphne,
- 11:27she introduces Emmett to Bay.
- 11:29And I think this is like when the two of them actually meet.
- 11:31Mm-hmm.
- 11:31And also we see Bay has a name sign now.
- 11:33Dani: Yes.
- 11:35I caught that.
- 11:36John and Kathryn both also already have name signs.
- 11:39Kara: I would love to see a conversation with Daphne and
- 11:42someone about the name signs.
- 11:44'cause usually for name signs you kind of have to convene
- 11:47with more than one Deaf person.
- 11:49And also the name sign is usually tied to a physical
- 11:53attribute or a personality trait.
- 11:55So for the Bay one, it's just the letter B, and then her hair next to the hair,
- 11:59which that's clearly the physical trait.
- 12:01She has beautiful brown hair.
- 12:04But like Toby, it is just the T on the forehead, which, and
- 12:08the forehead sign is just boy.
- 12:10Yeah.
- 12:10So boy, he's a boy.
- 12:12Dani: His hair kind of sticks up, so I was like, is it like
- 12:15the little way his hair flips?
- 12:17Oh, I didn't catch that.
- 12:18Maybe.
- 12:20But then like
- 12:21John's.
- 12:22Is like JK on his Oh yeah.
- 12:25It's jk.
- 12:25On the chest.
- 12:26On the chest.
- 12:27Which made me think of like a badge.
- 12:29Like it's like the sign for cop.
- 12:31Kara: Almost.
- 12:32Well, my, my sign is Kara on the chest and that's 'cause I have a big heart.
- 12:37So usually anything over the chest, it has something to do with like the heart.
- 12:42Got it.
- 12:43Sometimes.
- 12:44That's really
- 12:45Dani: sweet, Kara Just you saying I have a big heart is really sweet.
- 12:50Kara: It sounds crazy to say that about yourself.
- 12:53Dani: Yeah.
- 12:53But it's true and I love
- 12:54Kara: it.
- 12:54Dani: Oh, thank
- 12:55Kara: you.
- 12:55Sarit we gave that to me.
- 12:57I love that.
- 12:58Mm-hmm.
- 12:58Thank you.
- 12:59Sarit.
- 13:00And also the other people who uh, convened and agreed on the name sign.
- 13:04Thank you.
- 13:05Um, shout out to them.
- 13:07What's Kathryn's though?
- 13:08I actually haven't, I think it's just a shaking K. See why?
- 13:13Because I think it's a K.
- 13:14That's it.
- 13:15Dani: That's it.
- 13:15Yeah.
- 13:16They're like, they're so straightforward, I guess.
- 13:17And
- 13:18Kara: Regina is all on the chin.
- 13:21And if you do like an open hand, five on the chin, that just means mom.
- 13:25Yeah.
- 13:26So I think it's just Regina mom.
- 13:28I think
- 13:29Dani: easy is that.
- 13:30Damn.
- 13:31Okay.
- 13:32Kara: To the ASL coach from Switched at Birth, I would love for you
- 13:34guys to explain why you gave the characters name signs they have.
- 13:38Dani: We should reach out.
- 13:39Kara: Yeah,
- 13:40Dani: you will be hearing from us.
- 13:42So I was curious.
- 13:44I used to work as a background doctor in college.
- 13:47But I'm curious if they used all Deaf, uh, background actors
- 13:50for the scenes at Carlton that
- 13:52Kara: question.
- 13:52I do not know.
- 13:54It's entirely possible.
- 13:55I should actually get a, take a closer look at the background actors.
- 14:00They're only on for a second, but
- 14:01Dani: Yeah.
- 14:02Kara: You know, if they're like really bad signers, they could
- 14:04be doing like baseball, water melon, pineapple over and over.
- 14:07Dani: Yeah.
- 14:09When you're a background actor, you sometimes you're on set all day.
- 14:12Mm-hmm.
- 14:12And
- 14:13usually you're doing just one scene for that
- 14:15whole day.
- 14:15You have to like fake conversations all day.
- 14:18Kara: Right.
- 14:19Dani: So I guess I'm just curious, like Yeah, I'd love to see what was going
- 14:22on with the background actors on set.
- 14:23I hope they were Deaf people.
- 14:25Like I hope they were hiring Deaf people for that job.
- 14:28Kara: I bet they did.
- 14:29There's so many Deaf people in la
- 14:31Dani: Especially like the sign language coordinator I'm sure could be like
- 14:35Yeah, I have background actors like on Hand Deaf West is out there.
- 14:38Yeah.
- 14:39There's so many Deaf actors in la
- 14:40Kara: Yeah.
- 14:41And also like high schoolers from um California.
- 14:44School for the Deaf and Riverside?
- 14:46Dani: Yes.
- 14:46Oh my God.
- 14:47Shout out to Glee.
- 14:49Kara: Shout out to Glee.
- 14:50Dani: I'm rewatching Glee right now, guys.
- 14:51And I just watched the episode where they're competing against
- 14:56the school for the Deaf, so they bring the kids in to perform.
- 14:59Imagine.
- 15:00And I was immediately panicked 'cause I wanted to make sure that they were
- 15:05actually using Deaf actors and they were, they had brought in the choir from
- 15:09california School for the Deaf Riverside.
- 15:12Kara: True bad.
- 15:13They make many jokes about Deaf people in that show.
- 15:15Dani: They do.
- 15:16I do remember them putting out something, Bayng like, this is Glee.
- 15:20And we make fun of every, literally every single person on the show.
- 15:24That is fair.
- 15:24And it would be like unfair to not make some cracks at whoever,
- 15:28but Yeah, it's a little bit rough.
- 15:31Yeah.
- 15:32But that Imagine scene is beautiful.
- 15:34So that's cool.
- 15:36Kara: Oh God.
- 15:36People love that Imagine scene.
- 15:37Okay.
- 15:38To be fair, I did like it when I saw it.
- 15:42Dani: Anyway
- 15:42Kara: back to Switched at Birth.
- 15:44Dani: Yeah.
- 15:44Back to Switched at Birth,
- 15:45Kara: we're a carton school for the Deaf.
- 15:47And Liam shows up.
- 15:49I don't know why he's not in class and how he can just get on this campus.
- 15:53No security.
- 15:54Dani: My school was outside mostly.
- 15:57Kara: That's So California of you I
- 15:58Dani: know.
- 15:59I'm sorry.
- 16:00And I am trying to think like people probably could have wandered onto campus.
- 16:04We did have security guards, but definitely not as many security
- 16:07guards as there were like sections for people to wander in.
- 16:11It was a different time.
- 16:12Kara: Liam goes to see Daphne because he just broke up with Bay
- 16:16and then fresh out the slammer.
- 16:18He said, let me hit my girl up.
- 16:20He said, no.
- 16:21What Bay drama.
- 16:21Anyways, I got another girl on my mind, immediately goes to carlton
- 16:26Dani: 'Cause Bay did not tell him about the whole Bayng Switched at Birth thing.
- 16:29Kara: No, she did not say the family lore.
- 16:31Dani: Yeah.
- 16:32When they break up, she's like, I just have a lot going on right now.
- 16:35And he's like, literally, what do you have going on?
- 16:38Nothing.
- 16:39And she doesn't say anything, which is kind of surprising to me.
- 16:43I feel like I would throw that back in my boyfriend's face if I was 16 and he
- 16:47was like, you have nothing going on.
- 16:50Kara: I'd be like, well actually
- 16:51Dani: yeah.
- 16:52But Emmett knows that something's wrong immediately
- 16:54he says, fuck this hearing guy.
- 16:56Kara: He's playing bodyguard.
- 16:58Liam says, do you speak English?
- 17:00And Emmett's like, do you think I am an idiot?
- 17:03God I love him.
- 17:04And Liam just go and he's like, oh, right.
- 17:06Deaf.
- 17:07I'm at a Deaf school.
- 17:07And then he signs the name sign for Daphne, which is happy on the chest.
- 17:11And then Emmett's like, Ugh,
- 17:12Dani: Poor Emmett.
- 17:14This must happen to him so often.
- 17:16Like it feel like Daphne is not surprised when Liam follows her to her school.
- 17:21Kara: No, she is a stunning girl.
- 17:23She's gorgeous.
- 17:24I get it.
- 17:25He does just show up outta nowhere.
- 17:26Dani: He fully shows up outta nowhere.
- 17:28I love, he also approaches and as like, I'm not a stalker, I just like, thought
- 17:32that I'd be seeing you around school.
- 17:33And when I didn't, like
- 17:35Kara: how did he know?
- 17:35Issue one, I guess issue Deaf.
- 17:37There's only one Deaf
- 17:38Dani: school.
- 17:39He literally says it.
- 17:39He goes no offense, but like there's only one Deaf school in the area.
- 17:44Kara: Yeah.
- 17:44Poor Emmett is brooding so mad.
- 17:47Staring at the fountain angrily, staring at them angrily.
- 17:50Dani: Also Emmett's like, she says like.
- 17:53Not all hearing guys are assholes.
- 17:55And he's like, okay, rich ones that are on the football team at Buckner
- 17:58that show up in their Letterman jacket, probably an asshole.
- 18:02Kara: And you know what?
- 18:02He's gonna be right.
- 18:03Anyways, yeah, we are back at home now at the Kennish Mansion.
- 18:07Dani: Yeah.
- 18:08And Bay is complaining about her grounding again.
- 18:12Kara: And she goes to Regina I guess with some moral support.
- 18:15Dani: No, I think she's trying to like get Regina to unground her.
- 18:20But Regina really lays down the law.
- 18:22Kara: Now she is like, so let me get this clear.
- 18:25You are stuck at home in your mansion with a swimming pool, tennis courts, your art
- 18:30studio, you computer, and nothing to do.
- 18:33Dani: She also says.
- 18:34If it were me, I would've grounded you for a month.
- 18:37Which is way more fair, I think.
- 18:39If my kid got arrested.
- 18:40Got arrested for something so stupid that she was kind of doing on purpose
- 18:46to get arrested for attention.
- 18:48Yeah.
- 18:48I would be, yeah, I'd be furious.
- 18:51Don't fuck around with like cops in the court system.
- 18:54That'll ruin your life.
- 18:55Kara: That is true.
- 18:56Dani: But it won't ruin Bay's life 'cause she's super rich, so it doesn't matter.
- 19:00Kara: Yeah.
- 19:01It's gonna be expunged from her record.
- 19:02Dani: But then Regina is like, okay, come help me paint the guest house.
- 19:07Kara: And they, the two of them actually bond.
- 19:09Dani: Yeah, they bond.
- 19:10Thank God, Regina's finally reaching out.
- 19:12That's what she should have been doing from the start.
- 19:14And then Daphne ventures into the house to go through the kitchen.
- 19:20She's like looking for cooking supplies.
- 19:22She's going through the kitchen and then she picks up like a meat cleaver.
- 19:26Kara: And then Toby catches her.
- 19:28Dani: Toby catches her.
- 19:29Sneaks up behind her.
- 19:30Sneaks up behind her.
- 19:31Kara: Disclaimer, don't do this to a Deaf person.
- 19:34Do not sneak up behind them.
- 19:35Especially when they have a very sharp object in their hand.
- 19:38You can flick their lights or you can bang really loud so
- 19:43they can feel the vibrations.
- 19:44Do not sneak up behind them.
- 19:46'cause what could have happened and thankfully didn't, is that she could have
- 19:49dropped that meat cleaver on her foot.
- 19:51Or stabbed him.
- 19:52Or stabbed him and thought it was an intruder.
- 19:55Dani: And instead Toby says the weirdest thing to her.
- 19:58What does he say?
- 19:59Okay.
- 19:59He
- 20:00is like, she says, I'm so sorry.
- 20:03I think she says don't tell anybody, which like, girl, you weren't robbing the house.
- 20:08You're just like coming in for spices.
- 20:10But he's like, don't worry, unless you have some like weird meat cleaver fetish.
- 20:16Like if I had a new sibling, the last thing I would do is
- 20:20introduce the word fetish.
- 20:22Fetish into a conversation.
- 20:24Kara: Never.
- 20:25Dani: Never.
- 20:26Kara: I would never say that word in front of my brother.
- 20:28Dani: No, I wouldn't wanna say it in front of anyone I'm blood related to.
- 20:33No, that's Toby Gross.
- 20:35Do you have a meat cleaver fetish?
- 20:37Yeah.
- 20:37Why are you bringing that up?
- 20:38Obviously she just picked up the knife.
- 20:40Maybe she was borrowing it.
- 20:42I don't know.
- 20:42Relax.
- 20:43I
- 20:43Kara: think she was just admiring all the tools in the kitchen.
- 20:46Yeah, she was.
- 20:46She's fancy.
- 20:47Yeah.
- 20:47Because then
- 20:48Dani: she goes on to say it's her dream kitchen.
- 20:50It is.
- 20:51And she's baking something.
- 20:53That's right.
- 20:53She brings a bowl in because then Toby sticks his finger in
- 20:56the bowl to taste the batter.
- 20:58She's making brownies for the barbecue tonight.
- 21:01Brownies.
- 21:02Because Katherine asked her to Yes.
- 21:04And just like Daphne, We missed that part.
- 21:07We missed that part.
- 21:08'cause remember, Katherine had to be like so brownies.
- 21:10You'll make them after yapping at her.
- 21:12'cause Daphne couldn't, wasn't fucking hearing her at the table.
- 21:16'cause she was behind her.
- 21:17Yeah.
- 21:18Okay.
- 21:18Mystery solved guys.
- 21:20Whew.
- 21:21Kara: She's making brownies.
- 21:22She just need, I don't know, some nutmeg.
- 21:24Dani: Yeah, something random enough that she could sneak into the kitchen.
- 21:28John comes in
- 21:28they're like playing around.
- 21:29Yeah.
- 21:30And John goes, is he bothering you?
- 21:32Yeah.
- 21:32And Daphne says, yeah.
- 21:34And he goes, good.
- 21:36He's got years to make up for.
- 21:37Which is really sweet.
- 21:39Kara: Yeah.
- 21:39It was a cute reaction.
- 21:40Dani: Shows that he was not present for the moment.
- 21:42Toby said the word fetish, but like whatever.
- 21:45Kara: Yeah.
- 21:46Dani: Regina and Bay are still in, in the guest house.
- 21:48They're painting, they're talking about alcoholism
- 21:51And Frida Kahlo.
- 21:52They're connecting.
- 21:53They're saying we both had Mexican folk art phases.
- 21:56Ah.
- 21:56And then they both quote Frida at the same time.
- 21:59Kara: Yes.
- 22:00Talking about Diego.
- 22:02Yes.
- 22:03About me and Diego.
- 22:04Yeah.
- 22:05What mistake he was, which is true.
- 22:07We learned that Regina is an alcoholic and she's been sober for years.
- 22:12Dani: I get her Bayng like, that's why I would've come down on you so hard
- 22:15about the beer because I'm an alcoholic.
- 22:17You're an underage kid, you shouldn't be drinking.
- 22:20But then for her to be like, and you are gonna be an alcoholic too if you don't
- 22:25watch out, is kind of how she says it.
- 22:28I, that's a lot to put on your brand new teen, biological daughter, don't you
- 22:33Kara: think?
- 22:34I do think it's a lot to put on the kid.
- 22:36Considering this is the two of thems first conversation together Yeah.
- 22:41Between just the two of them.
- 22:43Yeah, that is intense.
- 22:45Dani: She says, you and I don't have the luxury of just
- 22:48having a couple of beers that
- 22:50Kara: Sure.
- 22:51Dani: Because pretty quickly those few beers are gonna turn into a six pack.
- 22:54But I think it's kind of fucked up to be like, yeah, you, you don't have, you
- 22:58can't have just like a couple of beers to relax because like, we don't know yet.
- 23:03She's 16.
- 23:04But also the earlier you start, I think that makes it worse.
- 23:08That's a good point.
- 23:09I just am like, it's so clear to me that they did was not trying to get drunk.
- 23:13She was trying to get arrested,
- 23:15Kara: but Regina doesn't know that.
- 23:17I think.
- 23:17Dani: It just felt a little heavy to me.
- 23:19Like Daphne gets a pool.
- 23:21And her dream kitchen and Bay gets a lecture.
- 23:25A lecture about alcoholism and the understanding that she can't be a casual
- 23:30drinker according to her biological
- 23:32mother.
- 23:33But anyway, then Ty comes in and interrupts with the mail.
- 23:38Two,
- 23:39pieces of junk
- 23:39Kara: mail,
- 23:40Dani: I love Ty.
- 23:41I think he's so cute.
- 23:43I really like Bay and Ty's little relationship.
- 23:46I think they have really good chemistry.
- 23:47They, have silly little banter.
- 23:49Kara: I was blushing.
- 23:50Ty is sexy.
- 23:52Sure.
- 23:52And Regina knows this 'cause she steps out.
- 23:55Dani: Yeah.
- 23:55I really respected Regina Bayng like, I'm gonna give you some space.
- 23:58Yeah.
- 23:59That was very cool.
- 24:00Mom of her.
- 24:00I don't think Very
- 24:01Kara: cool mom.
- 24:02Dani: I don't think Katherine Kennish would've done that.
- 24:04Kara: No.
- 24:04She would've been like, who are
- 24:06Dani: you?
- 24:06Kara: Get out of my house.
- 24:07Dani: Yeah.
- 24:08And then it's nighttime and John is teaching Daphne how to grill ahead of
- 24:13the big barbecue that they're having.
- 24:15But he, once again,
- 24:16Kara: is not looking at her
- 24:17Dani: while he speaks, not looking at her.
- 24:20And honestly, I'm really glad that Daphne didn't fully have to read his lips saying.
- 24:25Oh, I know you're a vegetarian, but just in case you're ever cooking for a guy,
- 24:30Kara: I didn't even pay attention to what he was saying.
- 24:32Dani: That pissed me off so much just because as someone who was a vegetarian
- 24:36and now still does not eat red meat,
- 24:38I would not cook any meat that I don't eat for anyone else personally.
- 24:44And I feel like Daphne also doesn't eat meat because she likes animals.
- 24:49Kara: Right.
- 24:49So
- 24:49Dani: she also probably would not do that.
- 24:51It was very Republican dad coded, he said, just in case
- 24:54you're ever cooking for a man,
- 24:56Kara: just in case, um, you're in the kitchen and your husband's off working.
- 24:59Dani: Yeah.
- 24:59Just in case you're in the kitchen, you know where you belong and your husband's
- 25:02at work and yeah, you need to have dinner on the table when he gets home.
- 25:05This whole barbecue scene is a straight mess.
- 25:08Such a mess.
- 25:09And
- 25:09it starts with Katherine Bayng like, okay, let's bring up the
- 25:13motorcycle thing now to get it out of the way before dinner to Regina.
- 25:16Crazy.
- 25:17Why would you do that?
- 25:19That's a very big conversation.
- 25:20So they basically ambush Regina as she's like leaving the guest house love the
- 25:25way Katherine fakes it to be like, oh, I actually, I have time in the mornings.
- 25:29I would love to drop Daphne off at school on my way Pilates, and
- 25:32Regina says she rides with Emmett.
- 25:35Which everyone knows.
- 25:36Everyone saw him pull up this morning, it was already a big to-do.
- 25:39And then they get into this whole spat and Is it Katherine that's like, he's Deaf.
- 25:45He's Deaf, and then Regina's like, and which is so frustrating.
- 25:50I understand why they're saying it, like it makes sense for their characters.
- 25:54I would've led with he's a 16-year-old boy.
- 25:57He's a 16-year-old boy.
- 25:59Kara: What Katherine really should have done is pull up like a bar graph of like,
- 26:03motorcycle casualties and fatalities and
- 26:06Dani: maybe categorize it by age,
- 26:08But instead they do totally be like, he's Deaf.
- 26:12What if something happens again?
- 26:15Just take out the he's
- 26:16Kara: Deaf part.
- 26:16What if something happens?
- 26:18What if something happened to our daughter who we just met and we love so
- 26:22much and we are so afraid of losing her.
- 26:25Dani: But they really blow it by making it about him Bayng Deaf.
- 26:28Kara: Yeah.
- 26:29But they get interrupted
- 26:30Dani: because it's dinner time.
- 26:31Daphne, like from mid fight, from across the barbecue announces it's dinner time.
- 26:37Kara: I think she saw their body language.
- 26:39I was gonna say she did not hear what they were saying.
- 26:42No.
- 26:42She saw their body language and the angry faces and was like, time to stop this.
- 26:48Dani: That's also how I felt.
- 26:49The way she said it, i'm like, girl, there's no way you
- 26:52weren't catching those vibes.
- 26:54Because yeah, John in that argument was really triggering me.
- 26:58Well first he's so dismissive.
- 27:01He's so like, that's not what we're saying.
- 27:03Whoa, whoa, whoa.
- 27:04Everybody just calmed down.
- 27:06Kara: Oh my God.
- 27:06I was
- 27:06Dani: getting riled up.
- 27:08I know.
- 27:08Kara: They infuriate me in this episode.
- 27:11Anyways, this dinner time and apparently the Kennishes are Christian, yeah.
- 27:16Dani: It was like a jump scare when they were like, and now we'll say Grace.
- 27:19I was like, you're never gonna do this again.
- 27:21Kara: You never, ever say Grace again.
- 27:22Dani: Regina Bayng like, we're atheists and Daphne Bayng like, whoa, whoa, whoa.
- 27:27I'm agnostic.
- 27:28So funny.
- 27:30Kara: She said, I can speak for myself mom.
- 27:32Dani: She really does not like Regina using a royal wee in any situation.
- 27:37Kara: And I think that's fair.
- 27:38But also maybe she is actually atheist and she's trying to people please
- 27:41and be like God could be there.
- 27:44Maybe I'll say Grace.
- 27:45Dani: Her asking them to lead the grace.
- 27:49It's very pick me daughter.
- 27:50She's very like, I have to be perfect.
- 27:53Kara: But one thing that really made me mad was Regina says, we don't
- 27:57thank God for a salmon and asparagus.
- 28:00This family invited you for a dinner.
- 28:03Dani: Yeah.
- 28:04It's, she's Bayng kind of a dick.
- 28:06Kara: That was mean.
- 28:07Dani: It was mean.
- 28:08Kara: You can be atheist, but be nice about it.
- 28:11Dani: I'm an atheist.
- 28:12I have politely held hands.
- 28:14Yeah.
- 28:14And silently let the people around me say grace, when it's not my house
- 28:19and it's not my dinner plenty times.
- 28:21'cause
- 28:21Kara: I am a guest in their house and they cooked for me.
- 28:24And if that's what they wanna do is say Grace for five seconds.
- 28:29By all means.
- 28:30It's a very nice thing to do.
- 28:31Dani: Daphne's Little Grace is very cute.
- 28:33It's very giving.
- 28:34Like me at Thanksgiving, like I'm thankful for my family,
- 28:38Kara: my family, my parents and my food or something.
- 28:40Dani: Yeah.
- 28:40It's basically that, but it's sweet.
- 28:43Kara: Okay.
- 28:43Yeah.
- 28:44Grace is done.
- 28:44and
- 28:44Dani: Then all hell breaks loose
- 28:47Kara: because Katherine fully ignoring Regina's request and wishes is like, what
- 28:54if I drove you to school every morning?
- 28:56Dani: Yeah.
- 28:56It's really awkward.
- 28:57It's also shitty.
- 28:58Like it's so guilt trippy.
- 29:00It is.
- 29:02And Regina says, no, no, no.
- 29:04None of that fake cool mom shit.
- 29:06Kara: Right?
- 29:06I am the
- 29:07Dani: cool mom in this house.
- 29:08Kara: You're doing this because you hate Deaf people basically.
- 29:11Dani: And then, yeah, Regina has a meltdown that just like, it explodes.
- 29:16And
- 29:16Kara: Adriana Grandma is at the table.
- 29:18Poor Adriana.
- 29:19She was invisible again.
- 29:20But Adriana and Daphne are begging her to stop.
- 29:23Dani: I like that they don't caption Daphne's signs to Regina and Daphne
- 29:28keeps going please stop this.
- 29:29They don't caption it, which I thought was an interesting choice.
- 29:32Kara: Yeah, I did notice that.
- 29:34'cause Daphne is signing to Regina, but there's no captions.
- 29:37It's basically like, please stop.
- 29:39And then.
- 29:40I guess it's to, to frame the perspective from like Bay and the other Kennishes,
- 29:44'cause they're like, what's going on?
- 29:46What are they saying?
- 29:47Are they Yeah.
- 29:48Dani: Regina starts signing back at Daphne, right?
- 29:50And Katherine goes, what?
- 29:52What is she saying?
- 29:53to Daphne.
- 29:54Which feels fucked up.
- 29:56To have it out in front of the kids is putting the kids
- 29:59in such an awkward position.
- 30:00Kara: Yeah.
- 30:00I'm mad at all the parents.
- 30:02Dani: Everyone sucks in this situation.
- 30:04Kara: I don't remember how this came up, but she was like, I'm letting
- 30:07her ride a motorcycle to school.
- 30:09I'm not handing her a gun.
- 30:11Dani: And John says, well, that would be a lot safer.
- 30:14What?
- 30:16Kara: I don't know about the statistics.
- 30:17I think both are very not safe.
- 30:19Dani: I think both are very, not safe, maybe for different reasons, but to
- 30:23be like a gun would be safer than her riding on his motorcycle to school
- 30:28Kara: and he doesn't care about the motorcycle.
- 30:30He cares that Emmett is Deaf, I think.
- 30:32Dani: Do you?
- 30:33I think they really just like don't know where to direct their anxiety.
- 30:38Kara: Yeah.
- 30:38I think this is their way of coping with trying to catch up for 15
- 30:44years of missing raising Daphne.
- 30:46Dani: And then Regina says, don't tell me there's guns in this house.
- 30:49Kara: Yeah.
- 30:50They're Republican.
- 30:50They have guns in the house, and he invokes the Second Amendment
- 30:54and he says, yep, that is my right under the second amendment.
- 30:58Dani: Regina basically flees the scene at that point.
- 31:02Very Bay coded of her.
- 31:04Yeah.
- 31:04And Daphne comes upstairs and they have it out in Simcom.
- 31:08In Simcom.
- 31:10They're both really angry.
- 31:11Pick one language.
- 31:13It's so hard to do.
- 31:14Two,
- 31:15Kara: it's so much work to do.
- 31:17Simcom.
- 31:17Plus you're prioritizing English when you do simcom.
- 31:20It drives me crazy, but Daphne is like Mom, what is your problem?
- 31:25This is a hard situation for everyone.
- 31:27Why can't you make the best of it?
- 31:29Dani: Yeah, I feel like it's fucked up for Regina to be like they told me they
- 31:33don't think Deaf people should drive.
- 31:35Kara: That is not her thing to tell.
- 31:37It also isn't what they said.
- 31:38That is not what they said at all.
- 31:40Dani: That's not what they fucking said.
- 31:42And Daphne doesn't believe her
- 31:43and she's right not to believe her.
- 31:45She's clearly just trying to hurt Daphne.
- 31:47Kara: It's so mean.
- 31:48Even if John and Katherine did say like, oh, Deaf people can't drive.
- 31:52I think it's Regina's job as the mom to then educate them and, and go,
- 31:57in fact, many Deaf people can drive.
- 32:01Not like throw this insult onto her daughter.
- 32:05Dani: Man.
- 32:06If the kenne are that worried about Deaf people driving,
- 32:09they would hate the future.
- 32:11'cause my Uber drivers are fully watching YouTube videos, headphones
- 32:15on in the car, scrolling ears.
- 32:18Not on the road, nor eyes on the road.
- 32:21I know.
- 32:22So like.
- 32:23I don't know, man.
- 32:24Daphne flees.
- 32:25And then Bay is having a similar fight with her mother.
- 32:30Bay flees too.
- 32:31Everyone's fleeing.
- 32:32Everyone has fled the scene of the big barbecue fight.
- 32:36Kara: Yeah.
- 32:37Where does Stephanie go?
- 32:38She goes on a date.
- 32:39I guess she had a date after this dinner.
- 32:40Dani: It's also a Thursday, so like date on a school night?
- 32:43Ooh, LA la
- 32:45Kara: Regina's a cool mom.
- 32:46Dani: Regina is a cool mom
- 32:48so she said, yeah, my whole reunion with my bio family is only
- 32:52really gonna last until like nine.
- 32:54Kara: No, I bet.
- 32:55dinner started earlier let's say six.
- 32:57Six to eight.
- 32:58But also I think dinner ended early
- 33:00Dani: if dinner started
- 33:00at six, dinner was over at 6 0 5.
- 33:026
- 33:02Kara: 6, 6 0 5.
- 33:04Dani: Nobody is eating that food.
- 33:06Kara: Definitely is on their date with Liam.
- 33:08Dani: Yeah.
- 33:08Kara: They are at the record store this is a cute little scene because
- 33:13they're talking about, um, music taste and Liam mention Neon Trees very of the
- 33:18time, very 2011 to mention Neon Trees.
- 33:21I, and she goes, you want my knees on cheese?
- 33:24Dani: He asked her if she ever eavesdrops on people.
- 33:27Kara: Oh, and what'd she
- 33:28Dani: say?
- 33:29She's like, you're really not getting it, are you?
- 33:32And then takes him upstairs and puts the headphones on him and does
- 33:37Kara: a little
- 33:37Dani: lip reading game,
- 33:38Kara: which I go All correct.
- 33:40Dani: But here's the thing is he asks like, do you ever like
- 33:42spy on people with this skill?
- 33:45Which I feel like is a fair question.
- 33:47Kara: And she says, you're not really getting it.
- 33:49Why would he?
- 33:50Dani: But she also doesn't answer him.
- 33:52I'm like, I don't know.
- 33:53Kara, do you ever spy
- 33:54Kara: on people in public it?
- 33:55Okay, so my answer is it depends on the person.
- 33:57Sure.
- 33:58Some people enunciate really well and some people don't.
- 34:01And for some people the more I get to know them, the better I will be lip reading.
- 34:07So like my wife when I first met her, she's not American, so she
- 34:10was really hard to lip read at first when my implants were off.
- 34:15But now since we have been together for a bit then I'm very good with
- 34:19reading her and it just takes some time and getting used to, um,
- 34:22Dani: which is kind of exactly what Daphne says to Liam.
- 34:26Yeah.
- 34:26She says, when we hang out more I'll get to know your lips.
- 34:31Kara: Which
- 34:31Dani: is really hot.
- 34:33Kara: That is kind of hot.
- 34:33That's
- 34:34Dani: hot.
- 34:34Kara: Okay.
- 34:35Daphne.
- 34:36Yeah, some people can really do it.
- 34:38I can do it decently.
- 34:39Well, it really depends on the person.
- 34:42Dani: Yeah.
- 34:43Kara: It'd be really interesting to see when I go to Ireland,
- 34:46'cause they speak English.
- 34:48Certainly differently,
- 34:49Dani: dude.
- 34:49I can hear and I have a hard time, so I had to watch Derry
- 34:54Girls with the captions on.
- 34:56I love
- 34:56Kara: Derry Girls.
- 34:57Okay, so see, maybe you'll be fine.
- 34:59No, I cannot understand them,
- 35:01oh.
- 35:01Yeah.
- 35:01We're still on the day with Daphne and Liam and um, Liam's friends show
- 35:05up and they notice Daphne's hearing aids and they go, what are those?!
- 35:08And then they start mocking Deaf people and it's a really painful, awful scene.
- 35:14It's really bad to watch.
- 35:15Yeah, I don't wanna get super into like what they say, but they're
- 35:18mocking Deaf people and they're not being nice about it and they're.
- 35:21Not being funny and Liam is not sticking up for Daphne at all.
- 35:26Dani: He's doing that boy thing where he's like, guys cut it out.
- 35:29Not cool, but like punch one of them in the face, shove them.
- 35:33Yeah.
- 35:34I want you to get a little violent in this moment.
- 35:37Kara: Daphne also doesn't say anything.
- 35:39Dani: No, but she does get her own revenge when they say what's
- 35:43the sign for doing the nasty?
- 35:45So I can get it on with a Deaf girl too?
- 35:47And she teaches them I'm a douche bag.
- 35:49What is that actually?
- 35:51Kara: Okay.
- 35:51I have been Googling.
- 35:53I do not know what that sign is.
- 35:54Okay.
- 35:55I have never seen the sign for douche bag.
- 35:57And whenever it's been mentioned in sign, they finger spell it.
- 36:00I don't know what that sign is.
- 36:02The captions say I am a douche bag.
- 36:04But usually when you say I am, you point to yourself and she doesn't sign that.
- 36:09I think my gripe with that particular scene is that so many hearing
- 36:13people wanna know dirty signs, and I think Switched at Birth kind of
- 36:18displayed that out there for everyone.
- 36:20So I remember in middle school, everyone was signing that the
- 36:23douche bag sign because they were like, oh my God, that's a silly,
- 36:26funny, dirty word I learned in sign.
- 36:28And no one else knows what it means.
- 36:31Yeah.
- 36:32And I don't know, I think if it were me, I would've been like,
- 36:35I'm not gonna teach you a sign.
- 36:37Dani: Yeah fuck Liam's friends.
- 36:39It also reminded me when they were like, you do that like something
- 36:43shit, like they, they don't call it sign, but they like wave their hands.
- 36:46They're the
- 36:46Kara: weird thing with your hands.
- 36:48Dani: It reminded me of when we were at the Samia show and I was trying to get
- 36:51the bouncer to guide us through the crowd.
- 36:55To the accessible area for the interpreter.
- 36:57Mm-hmm.
- 36:58And I was like the ASL interpreter, nothing.
- 37:01What's ASL?
- 37:02The sign language interpreter.
- 37:05Nothing.
- 37:06And I was like, my friend is Deaf and we need to go to the accessible area.
- 37:11And he goes, oh.
- 37:12And starts like waving his hands around like that.
- 37:15Kara: And you say, right, the thing you do with your hands Yeah.
- 37:17That Deaf people do.
- 37:18Dani: And then he went, yeah, it's over there.
- 37:20And did not escort us, so fuck that.
- 37:23Bouncer.
- 37:23Fuck Liam's friends.
- 37:25Kara: Yeah.
- 37:25That bouncer at Brooklyn Steel.
- 37:27Yeah.
- 37:27Not very helpful.
- 37:28Sorry to that guy.
- 37:29Dani: No, I'm not sorry.
- 37:31He was really rude.
- 37:32Kara: The thing is also, this is a very realistic thing that can
- 37:35and does happen to Deaf people.
- 37:37It's not something out of the ordinary.
- 37:40Dani: No.
- 37:40And like even, I remember at my birthday party when we were signing, one of
- 37:46my friends came up and was like, oh my God, are you guys talking in code?
- 37:51And I was like, girl.
- 37:52One of my very lovely friends just didn't know, just like
- 37:55people not really be saying shit.
- 37:57Kara: I know they really do, sorry to your friend.
- 38:00I was not happy with her.
- 38:01Dani: But then if you asked her at a different time, she'd probably be
- 38:03like, I'd love to learn sign language.
- 38:05Kara: I've always wanted learn.
- 38:06Dani: Yeah.
- 38:07I've always wanted, wanted to learn sign language.
- 38:09Everyone has always wanted to learn.
- 38:11Every, every
- 38:11Kara: single person has always wanted to learn.
- 38:14Dani: Yeah.
- 38:14That's a fun fact about sign language.
- 38:17Kara: I've always wanted to learn.
- 38:18Always.
- 38:19Have I signed up?
- 38:19No.
- 38:19But I've always wanted alone.
- 38:20No.
- 38:21Have I downloaded an app?
- 38:22No.
- 38:22No.
- 38:23Always wanted to learn.
- 38:24Dani: Yeah.
- 38:25Um, YouTube is free if you're willing to watch ads, by the way.
- 38:29Yeah.
- 38:30So just, it's a good resource.
- 38:33By Deaf people.
- 38:34By Deaf people.
- 38:35Kara: Deaf people.
- 38:37Dani: Yeah.
- 38:37Deaf YouTubers.
- 38:38Bay is also out on her own kind of date,
- 38:41Kara: yeah.
- 38:41She goes to throw another ax girl on the wall.
- 38:45Dani: Yeah.
- 38:45She wants to do a piece.
- 38:48Kara: What if it's Axe throwing that?
- 38:50It's just a really bad pun.
- 38:51She's axe throwing.
- 38:53Dani: Just like me at the ren fair yesterday.
- 38:54She's throwing ax is what we were saying a lot.
- 38:57And she enlists Ty to help her.
- 39:00Kara: And she talks a little bit about, um, how to be a graffiti artist.
- 39:06Dani: Yeah.
- 39:07Which was another culture I didn't know anything about.
- 39:10So that was cool.
- 39:11The stuff with like the answering each other's pieces.
- 39:14Kara: I oddly know this 'cause I took AP or history in high school.
- 39:18Oh, okay.
- 39:19Go off.
- 39:20And we did a curriculum or like a course on the history of hip hop
- 39:26and rap music and also graffiti art.
- 39:29So I was like, oh, I already know this Bay.
- 39:31And then Ty goes axe girl on that wall why is she mad?
- 39:36And then be goes, let's do some family lore.
- 39:39Is family lore time.
- 39:40She
- 39:40Dani: said,
- 39:41Kara: I'm gonna trauma dump time to trauma dump.
- 39:44And he handles it very well.
- 39:46We don't see them share the actual story.
- 39:48No.
- 39:48Think they cut you it after.
- 39:49Dani: But then spoiler alert, they make out.
- 39:51So clearly he handles it well.
- 39:53Kara: He does handle it well.
- 39:54Then he's kind of like, I don't know man.
- 39:56You got three parents who love you and, and apparently he has no parents.
- 40:00Dani: He's a little bit older too.
- 40:02Kara: It's not really, it's, we don't know how old he is.
- 40:05He's not
- 40:05Dani: in high school anymore.
- 40:06I, let's say think he's gonna be like 19.
- 40:08So let's say he
- 40:08Kara: is 18 or 19 and Bay is 15.
- 40:11So Bay is 15
- 40:12Dani: right now
- 40:13Kara: and he is 19.
- 40:14Dani: Actually don't love that age gap, but let's set that aside.
- 40:17'cause I do love Ty and I think his intentions are pretty pure of heart.
- 40:22I think so.
- 40:23Then they put the poster up and they make out.
- 40:27Yeah.
- 40:28But I love when they're done.
- 40:29They both have like perfectly splattered paint on their faces.
- 40:33Kara: Yeah.
- 40:34Dani: Which how did that get there?
- 40:36That doesn't just happen.
- 40:38Kara: They got into a little pain fight.
- 40:39Dani: Maybe I would've loved to see that scene.
- 40:42Kara: That's true.
- 40:42Dani: And then Bay is like, wow, you really listened to me.
- 40:45And Ty's like, yeah, I like listening to you.
- 40:47And then they make out
- 40:48Kara: and thank God.
- 40:49' Dani: cause Bay does need someone to just listen to her.
- 40:51Kara: And I don't know if Liam would listen to her.
- 40:54Dani: Well, she didn't wanna talk to him, is the thing.
- 40:56And
- 40:56Kara: there must have been a reason why she didn't want to.
- 40:58Dani: Yeah, it's 'cause he is a corn ball.
- 41:00He is cheesy as hell.
- 41:02Yeah.
- 41:02I don't like him.
- 41:03But Ty is smooth.
- 41:04Ty, Ty has good vibes.
- 41:07I like Ty.
- 41:07I like Ty a lot.
- 41:08But yeah, Daphne back on her fail of a date, calls Emmett.
- 41:13She's like on the curb.
- 41:14Oh, poor Daphne.
- 41:15She's like sitting on a curb.
- 41:17Emmett pulls up on his motorcycle
- 41:20Kara: and then he goes, I
- 41:21Dani: told you so she says, you can say, I told you so.
- 41:24First in his defense.
- 41:27And then Bay and Daphne both get home around the same time and they link up.
- 41:32In the driveway slash basketball court area.
- 41:36Right.
- 41:36Which I just wanna say on the HBO Girls rewatch pod, they talk about how many
- 41:42scripts must be set like interior bathtub.
- 41:47'cause there's so many bathtub scenes in girls.
- 41:50And I feel that the equivalent for this show is exterior driveway.
- 41:55Exterior driveway.
- 41:56They love an emotional driveway scene.
- 41:58Kara: They do?
- 41:59Exterior driveway.
- 42:01Bay sneaks home also.
- 42:03'cause remember she's still Yeah, she's grounded.
- 42:05She sees Daphne,
- 42:05Dani: whatever.
- 42:06Kara: And then she turns to sneak into the living
- 42:08Dani: room, but John catches her
- 42:10Kara: Yeah.
- 42:11Climbing
- 42:11Dani: through the window.
- 42:12I kind of love that.
- 42:13She's just like, well, the front door beeps and I thought you'd be asleep.
- 42:17Kara: Yeah.
- 42:17Dani: She said, you got me.
- 42:18I don't.
- 42:19What gonna you lie?
- 42:20She does lie though.
- 42:21Well, I actually, I wasn't sure.
- 42:23She says to John, I wasn't doing anything dangerous or illegal.
- 42:27I don't wanna call graffiti dangerous.
- 42:29And I don't know, it's not illegal everywhere, but I think
- 42:32in Kansas City, I'm pretty sure in Kansas City it's illegal.
- 42:35It's illegal.
- 42:36And also dangerous in the sense that you just got arrested and you could
- 42:39get arrested immediately again.
- 42:41Kara: So, yeah, I guess it is dangerous and illegal.
- 42:43Dani: So in that sense it is both dangerous and illegal.
- 42:46But John doesn't know that.
- 42:47And he says, I
- 42:49Kara: love you.
- 42:50Dani: And he's very nice to Bay.
- 42:52Kara: He is very nice to her.
- 42:53I think after the shit show, dinner they had, he's like, no more fighting.
- 42:57I love you.
- 42:58I'm just glad you're home.
- 42:59Dani: Yeah.
- 42:59He feels bad.
- 43:00And then Daphne comes home and Regina apologizes to her.
- 43:05They have a nice moment where Daphne says, did the Kennshes really say they
- 43:08don't think Deaf people should drive?
- 43:10And Regina says, look, honey, before I knew about Deaf people,
- 43:14I might've said the same thing.
- 43:16Yeah.
- 43:16'Cause I didn't know.
- 43:18And you need to advocate for yourself.
- 43:20Yeah.
- 43:20She does say, and it's your job to teach them.
- 43:23It's not, I feel that it's maybe more so Regina's job to teach them.
- 43:28Kara: Yeah.
- 43:28I think it's more so Regina's job because Daphne's still a child.
- 43:32She is a child.
- 43:33And also, I don't think the ownus should be on the Deaf person to teach.
- 43:37Dani: Yeah.
- 43:37I think that, there's a lot of heavy lifting Regina could do for Daphne.
- 43:42Kara: She's not really doing the heavy lifting.
- 43:44Dani: No.
- 43:44Regina doesn't like to, she doesn't like to do that.
- 43:47Kara: John and Katherine end up talking Katherine wonders, if she was in the wrong
- 43:51about trying to have a say about Daphne.
- 43:54Dani: Yeah.
- 43:54They have a moment where they come to their senses a little and Katherine's
- 43:58like, what are our rights really?
- 44:01Like Yeah, we're her blood, she also says Regina did a good job.
- 44:05Kara: Yes.
- 44:05We love her so much.
- 44:06'cause she's a great person because Regina raised her to be such a great person.
- 44:09Dani: So it is a little silly of them to be like worried suddenly.
- 44:13But is Regina such a great person?
- 44:16Because then the next day the Kennishes are like, and hey Regina.
- 44:21What about this lawsuit?
- 44:22Do you wanna join?
- 44:23'cause the Kenneshes are building a lawsuit to sue the hospital.
- 44:28Yes.
- 44:28For switching the babies.
- 44:29Kara: And Regina's like, I'm good.
- 44:31Dani: Hmm.
- 44:31I've given it some thought and I don't want that.
- 44:34Would you sue the hospital if this happened to you?
- 44:36Yes, I would.
- 44:37Me too.
- 44:37I also, I believe you should absolutely hold corporations and like
- 44:42large conglomerates to account and just because it's a I don't think
- 44:46it's like a little Podunk hospital.
- 44:48I think it's probably like a venture capitalist owned hospital
- 44:52A giant hospital in Kansas City.
- 44:54And I don't like that Regina says.
- 44:57I'm not the kind of person that sues every time I spill hot coffee on myself.
- 45:01Kara: She's directly referencing the McDonald's hot coffee case, which
- 45:04also was not a frivolous lawsuit.
- 45:06Not a frivolous lawsuit.
- 45:07Thank you.
- 45:08She had third degree burns on her thighs.
- 45:10Dani: And the coffee was like way too hot.
- 45:12It was like they had reheated the coffee or something.
- 45:15Kara: Justice for that woman.
- 45:16Dani: Justice for that woman that it makes me so mad that people reference that
- 45:20because also even if it had been that if you wanna sue McDonald's, get your bag.
- 45:27It's McDonald's.
- 45:28It's McDonald's.
- 45:28Fuck McDonald's.
- 45:29They have enough money.
- 45:31Just like the hospital definitely has liability insurance that will pay out.
- 45:35Kara: Also they should know because this was an extremely awful thing
- 45:38that happened to two families.
- 45:40Dani: Yeah.
- 45:41Yeah.
- 45:41They should.
- 45:42That's what, and Katherine says, we wanna make sure this
- 45:44doesn't happen to anyone else.
- 45:45Yeah.
- 45:46And Regina doesn't believe her it was really weird and it raised some flags
- 45:51for me and it raised some flags for the Kennishes who say she needs that money.
- 45:56Like she's literally living in the guest house because she
- 46:00was having trouble with rent.
- 46:01Kara: Why didn't she wanna get millions of dollars?
- 46:03Yeah.
- 46:03Dani: Obviously something's up.
- 46:05Kara: Yeah.
- 46:06So, dot dot dot on Regina Yeah.
- 46:08Know what her deal is.
- 46:09And then also in that scene, Regina much more calm her before
- 46:15they talk about the lawsuit.
- 46:16Yes.
- 46:16It's like, oh, by the way.
- 46:18I do let Daphne ride with him, but because I trust him and I follow them for a bit.
- 46:23Dani: Yeah.
- 46:23She said, Daphne begged for months to get on the bike.
- 46:27And then even after I said yes, I secretly followed them in my car to make
- 46:31sure he's like actually a good driver,
- 46:33Kara: which I think was sweet.
- 46:34I think that is sweet, and I probably would do that again.
- 46:37He's a 16-year-old boy.
- 46:38Dani: Yeah, I would totally do that.
- 46:40See if he's speeding or,
- 46:41yeah.
- 46:42To see if he's speeding.
- 46:43To see if he's, I don't think you could even text while on
- 46:47a motorcycle, but like, Nope.
- 46:48Not just to make sure.
- 46:50Kara: Yeah.
- 46:51Also in the wrap up scene, Daphne finally speaks up for herself.
- 46:54Dani: Yes.
- 46:55Daphne comes in and says,
- 46:57Kara: she says, Hey.
- 46:58John Katherine I know I speak really well, so hearing people tend to forget
- 47:02that I am Deaf, but I need you to speak slow and look at me and be patient.
- 47:07And then she teaches them their very first sign, which is squirrel.
- 47:11Squirrel because Katherine loves squirrels.
- 47:13Dani: Yeah.
- 47:14' Kara: cause of Toby, I guess.
- 47:16Yeah.
- 47:16His hair looked like a squirrel or something when he was a baby.
- 47:19It's cute.
- 47:20And everyone signs squirrel and they're all happy.
- 47:23And then Emmett comes to pick her up.
- 47:25Daphne goes off and Katherine's still like, wait,
- 47:28Dani: yeah.
- 47:28Katherine cannot let this damn motorcycle thing go.
- 47:32She, after Regina's like he's a really good driver, he pulls up and.
- 47:38Daphne goes, everyone's okay with this.
- 47:40Right?
- 47:41And Bay goes, don't ask, just go.
- 47:43Which, I'm on Bay's side.
- 47:44Yeah.
- 47:44Daphne, why are you bringing it up?
- 47:46And Katherine goes, no, I'm not okay with it.
- 47:49he's
- 47:49Kara: already here.
- 47:50Dani: I'm really trying to be okay with it.
- 47:52But I'm not like,
- 47:53Kara: all that progress we just made, gone.
- 47:56You're not helping anything.
- 47:57Dani: Then Regina lays down the law.
- 47:59She says It doesn't matter 'cause you're not her parent.
- 48:01And we moved in not to co-parent, just to get to know each other, which is true.
- 48:07Thank God she said something.
- 48:08And Katherine's like, okay.
- 48:10And John's like, okay.
- 48:12And I think that's the end of that.
- 48:13That's the end of that.
- 48:14, And then Regina's like, and also, I'm not gonna join your lawsuit.
- 48:18Yeah.
- 48:19So that's a mess.
- 48:22Kara: That's the end of the episode, I
- 48:23Dani: think.
- 48:23Yeah.
- 48:23That's where the episode ends.
- 48:25Kara: We've really learned about the differences between the and
- 48:28the parenting styles for sure.
- 48:30Dani: I know Regina at one point comments at the dinner when she's
- 48:33melting down, she says, I don't get a say in any of the parenting stuff.
- 48:38Kara: Like Bay being grounded for a week when she got arrested.
- 48:41Dani: These kids have so many toys.
- 48:43That's true.
- 48:43They have so much stuff.
- 48:45So true.
- 48:46One point she brings up when they're like, Emmett's 16, she's like,
- 48:51you bought your son a $30,000 car.
- 48:55Great point.
- 48:56I always agree with what she's saying, but I never agree with How is she saying it?
- 49:01Or the way she goes about, she's like throwing it in their faces
- 49:05Kara: it's not helpful to anyone.
- 49:07Dani: No.
- 49:07And she's just not doing herself any favors.
- 49:09Earlier in the episode, Katherine comes in to probably, I don't know,
- 49:14complain about the motorcycle more and walks in and Regina is fully scraping
- 49:19the wallpaper off of the walls.
- 49:22And then later on when she asked Bay to paint, they are painting the walls black.
- 49:27It's purple.
- 49:28Is it purple?
- 49:29It looks blacky.
- 49:29It's eggplant purple.
- 49:31Okay.
- 49:31You are right because then Ty makes that joke and calls her an eggplant.
- 49:35Kara: Yeah.
- 49:35Dani: Somethings up with your tv.
- 49:37I guess I'm more Katherine Kennish style of decor, so I don't wanna, you know, I'm
- 49:42biased, but like the guest house is cute.
- 49:46Sure.
- 49:46There are a lot of squirrels that maybe you wanna get rid of also.
- 49:49Couldn't you have asked?
- 49:51Yeah I think Katherine Offhandedly says something when they're
- 49:54moving in, like, make yourself at home, do whatever you want.
- 49:57But it feels insane to me on day one of living in a beautiful guest house
- 50:03rent free to be like, I'm going to scrape the nice wallpaper
- 50:09right
- 50:09off the walls and then paint the exposed walls underneath like a dark,
- 50:15a really dark, heavy, bold color.
- 50:17I don't know, like, it feels intentional.
- 50:19Kara: Kind of like.
- 50:20Poking the bear.
- 50:22Yeah.
- 50:23Also, did they ever talk about how long the Regina was gonna be there?
- 50:26Dani: No.
- 50:27There's like no.
- 50:28Yeah, nothing.
- 50:29They just say, make yourself at home.
- 50:31I have lived in this apartment three years and I have not painted the walls.
- 50:36Because I would want to ask my landlord so that I don't get sued.
- 50:41But also because it's a lot of work.
- 50:43I know she's an artist, so she wants to make her space her own, but it
- 50:47feels really insane to day one be there with a wallpaper scraper.
- 50:51Kara: I know you could have done that without scraping the wallpaper off.
- 50:54Yeah.
- 50:54Which I thought was kind of cute.
- 50:55And, kind of country chic.
- 50:57Dani: Yeah.
- 50:57Cottage core.
- 50:58The whole, the whole guest house is like shabby chic cottage.
- 51:02Kara: Yeah.
- 51:03Dani: And Regina's like, let me.
- 51:05Get some eggplant on these walls.
- 51:07Fuck these squirrels.
- 51:08Yeah.
- 51:09Fuck the squirrels.
- 51:09She hates the squirrels.
- 51:11Yeah.
- 51:12I'm not on anyone's, none of the parents are behaving well this episode.
- 51:16I
- 51:16Kara: know.
- 51:18Dani: And I think Katherine probably will get worse and Regina maybe gets a little
- 51:21bit better, but right now, I don't know.
- 51:26Kara: And everyone's being so awful about Deaf people, but
- 51:29that also will get better.
- 51:31Dani: Yeah.
- 51:31I can't wait for Toby to stop being shitty.
- 51:34I feel like he's been really shitty in the first two episodes.
- 51:37Kara: He's just a really annoying brother right now.
- 51:39Yeah.
- 51:39Dani: He doesn't have a lot to work with except for being fucking
- 51:42mean to Daphne calling her grandpa.
- 51:44Kara: Yeah.
- 51:44And talk about
- 51:45Dani: the, uh, meat cleaver fetish.
- 51:47Bringing up fetishes, whatever.
- 51:50Kara: This episode was called American Gothic.
- 51:52Why do you think it was called that?
- 51:54Is that the one with the people holding the pitchfork?
- 51:56Dani: It is.
- 51:57I
- 51:57mean, I think it's like supposed to be sort of a portrait
- 52:03of a family in that time.
- 52:06And there's a lot of commentary on how they look miserable.
- 52:10So I think they're probably poking at that.
- 52:12This is a portrait of a family that is also clearly going through things.
- 52:16Kara: That is exactly what I was thinking.
- 52:18I don't know what the writers were thinking super intently about
- 52:20why they named these paintings, see these, these paintings.
- 52:23But it goes for like the entire show.
- 52:26Dani: I mean, it's intentional.
- 52:27I can't wait to see how closely they're able to tie it.
- 52:31Do we think they were starting to run out of paintings as
- 52:33we get into further seasons?
- 52:35I think they will, because this is, it is a lot of episodes per season.
- 52:39Kara: There is,
- 52:39Dani: I think that's it.
- 52:41Thanks for listening.
- 52:42And we'll
- 52:42Kara: be back whenever next week,
- 52:45Dani: Sure.
- 52:46Let's say next week maybe.
