- 0:10Welcome back to another edition of the be forever.
- 0:12Cool podcast. My name is Rex 45 and I have the
- 0:17pleasure, having Jim. I don't know if you want to give
- 0:19you a last name but not, but that's up to you Carnival
- 0:23mcconville, you know, I want to welcome to the show, you know,
- 0:28I've learned a lot from from from this guy here.
- 0:31I remember I was in Homestead. I think it was Homestead 2020,
- 0:36pandemic year, which thank God for, you know, track people,
- 0:39that opened it Trackers, I think by June, we were able to get
- 0:43back out and get on a track, you know, and we were talking down
- 0:47in Homestead and and, you know, I was just like, man, I want to
- 0:51raise some more. And, and, and, and that's when
- 0:53you chimed in the you started telling me stuff, right?
- 0:55Yeah. It's telling them that, you
- 0:57know, I race all over the all up of the up and down the coast and
- 1:00all these different tracks and it's just a really cool
- 1:02experience. You get two different tracks,
- 1:04you get to meet all cool new people, and it's just a good
- 1:07time and I was skeptical at first, you know, because just
- 1:13thinking about, you know, the logistics parts of it, you know,
- 1:17and getting down to because we're, you know, we're
- 1:20Massachusetts and it's a long ride and, you know, you got me
- 1:27thinking about like the schedule and you were talking about Azure
- 1:30and just azra, you know, detect. I was doing working earlier, so,
- 1:34you know how it is, you know, you know, you had me thinking
- 1:38about the track and he was just like, yeah, man, go ahead.
- 1:40And look at the schedule and and and kind of pick take a closer
- 1:43look because a lot of the races overlap and you made it seem
- 1:47like it wasn't a bad experience and you know, so you know before
- 1:50we get into like scheduling and stuff like that do let's talk
- 1:53about like how long you been racing and and when did you
- 1:57start going? Pretty me, you know, wherever
- 2:00you wanted to go race. So my rookie year was up in New
- 2:03Hampshire in 2011 and I believe in 2012 was my first time with a
- 2:08buddy. We wanted to go to Jersey and
- 2:10Check that out and we had a great time.
- 2:12We want the following year, and at that point, I started fading
- 2:16away from my home track and wanted to venture everywhere
- 2:19else and see, you know, what else I like and what are the
- 2:22tracks there are, and what to learn be a better Rider
- 2:25well-rounded Rider. Instead of learning to ride a
- 2:28one-track. Got you got you.
- 2:30And so we're you when you, when you first started you already
- 2:33knew about all these other tracks.
- 2:34You would you're doing track days and stuff like that.
- 2:37No no, no. I maybe want to want to Two of
- 2:40them before that vir was probably the only one I want to
- 2:43before before that happened. And I just figured I'll check
- 2:47them out. You know.
- 2:48It's it's a good way to learn. Yeah, yeah.
- 2:51It kind of you know I, you know, I was talking with TJ, you know,
- 2:56on earlier shows and talking about like not really doing a
- 2:59track day and and, you know, your chimed in saying well you
- 3:02know, get your license is a track Day weekend, you know.
- 3:06But you know for me I didn't, you know, took me like seven or
- 3:09eight years. To say, okay, let me go
- 3:12somewhere else, and raised, and it seems like you were doing
- 3:14that kind of early on. Yeah.
- 3:17I like I said I went to a couple of the tracks.
- 3:19I want the jersey and Daytona and had a blast and learn some
- 3:23so made some new friends while I was out there.
- 3:25And thought, you know, this isn't as intimidating as I was
- 3:28afraid to because our home track up in New Hampshire, the whole
- 3:30Seasons at this one track and you, you build a family from
- 3:34being there. So you kind of feel like the new
- 3:36kid on the Block when you go somewhere else and I didn't
- 3:39really Get out of my comfort zone, going to these other
- 3:42tracks. So I just kind of wanted to
- 3:43expand and go to more and kind of like what you do.
- 3:46Now you just want to go to a new track almost every year got you.
- 3:49And when did you decide like you know you are going to do like
- 3:54all the regions of ccs and Hazard.
- 3:57It was that right off the rip 2014.
- 4:00That was when I was going after the the as our national
- 4:03championship. And I wanted to do three other
- 4:06regions, so I want full send in 2014.
- 4:10And it kind of been doing it ever since I got burnt out, to
- 4:13be honest that year and then I ran into some injuries from
- 4:17crashes and scale the back a lot and then basically, when covid
- 4:21happened and we couldn't go anywhere.
- 4:23That's like, we said, I looked at the schedule and a lot of a
- 4:27lot of the different regions all kind of blend into each other in
- 4:30the same schedule. So I looked at this set off, I
- 4:33do these couple weekends, I can do all these regions and and I
- 4:36had a blast doing that so I kind of kept doing it since then.
- 4:38Got you got you In the beginning and even now.
- 4:42But it more in the beginning when you when you started
- 4:44camping out and stuff like that and and planning your trips, you
- 4:47know, like what are some of the mistakes, you know, you've made
- 4:50or things you've learned along the way.
- 4:54So I can, at least, say up my my first CCS experience my friend
- 4:59and I rented a tent, it was the display model, that could fit
- 5:03nothing more than a queen mattress in there and we just
- 5:06didn't know it was a two of us sharing a Sharing that small
- 5:10tent and it was like 90 degrees in the middle of the summer and
- 5:12it was brutal. And then the next time we went,
- 5:15we took his air conditioner out of his window and tried to zip
- 5:18it around the tent and then we didn't think about the
- 5:22condensation drip so a dripped in side of the tent and
- 5:25everything got flooded inside there.
- 5:28So you know, we learn along the ways and I've noticed with Chris
- 5:32to is the more he kept going. He kind of kept paying attention
- 5:34to my pet and my trail is set up and things started clicking and
- 5:37making sense and yet. It seemed taking notes like,
- 5:39alright, next weekend, I need, you know, walls for my canopy
- 5:42next time. I need another canopy and now I
- 5:45need a generator, and it just, it's a, you know, a long time of
- 5:48developing list of the things to be prepared.
- 5:52Got, you got to have him coming at, you know, you should write a
- 5:54book because there was so much information.
- 5:57I mean, even, you know, getting to the track early and why do we
- 6:01want to get to the track early? That's another lesson.
- 6:04I learned the hard way is when I was limited with vacation time.
- 6:07I would I would do these Trips that are like thousand miles and
- 6:10I would do the whole trip and maybe two days show up exhausted
- 6:14Friday night. Wake up for Tech and morning,
- 6:16practice and then learn a new track and I just didn't get to
- 6:20enjoy because I was always tired and not well rested.
- 6:22So now my game plan is to get there a day early.
- 6:27From what I'm writing whether I'm doing the track day or not
- 6:29until race day, but I'll get there at least a day to recoup
- 6:32relax and set up and be ready to ride.
- 6:36Yeah. And that's very important like
- 6:37you II showed up, you know, late night and try to get up early
- 6:41and and you know by Sunday I'm like I'm not racing today
- 6:45because I'm done and you tried out right?
- 6:47And you're like you know you got you gotta get here soon, I got
- 6:50to get here sooner. And and and now I I follow suit
- 6:53in and trying to get the tracks as early as possible.
- 6:57And even even, you know, when you, when you sign up for races,
- 7:01right? It makes sense to get there
- 7:03early. You make sense to do that early
- 7:04to, you're spending a lot of time and money to commit
- 7:07yourself to do these I want to enjoy it to the full capacity.
- 7:11Yeah, you definitely definitely. Now I noticed you don't
- 7:18necessarily cook but you have a lot of, a lot of stuff.
- 7:23I mean, it seems like you're kind of prepared just about most
- 7:27almost every condition. I did try the cooking a couple
- 7:31times. I would bring a little portable
- 7:32grill and propane, but the problem for me was was keeping
- 7:35the food cold, because if I was taking Two or three days to get
- 7:39to the track. I didn't want to deal with ice
- 7:41packs and keeping everything in cooler.
- 7:43So it was just easier for me to just to go get takeout and not
- 7:47deal with, you know, the condiments, the the paper plates
- 7:50and the forks knives, and all that, it just, it was too much
- 7:53work for me. Especially going by myself,
- 7:55right, right. But you have ice maker, I did
- 7:59get an ice maker and that was that was probably my last my
- 8:03last little Gadget that I bought for the pit set up again, when
- 8:07you're at the racetrack and it's Degrees out and you need to get
- 8:11ice for your cooler and it's five miles down the road and
- 8:15it's six bucks a bag. It's just easy to pull your own
- 8:19from a you know bottle of water and make your own ice at your
- 8:23convenience. Right.
- 8:24Right. And I think that's the biggest
- 8:25thing I learned is like do more things that you can do for
- 8:29yourself. The easier.
- 8:32It is your weekend, you know, whether it's bike, maintenance
- 8:36or picking up food ahead of time, And doing all these things
- 8:40and because if not your weekend is, can be horrible, right?
- 8:45Convenience is key. I mean, like I said you're
- 8:47spending a lot of time and money to be there at the racetrack and
- 8:49you want to enjoy to your fullest so anything you can do
- 8:53to make it more convenient and less stressful.
- 8:55So have your bike prepared, fully and deal with your food or
- 9:00make a buddy system which was big for me is to set up your pit
- 9:03and are somebody that you know, that way you kind of can help
- 9:06each other out. And in a sudden situation, like
- 9:08a Like a rain event or a crash or something like that, right?
- 9:11Right. And even being able to choose,
- 9:15you know, you know, on top of the hill versus in the swamp,
- 9:18just when it rains, right? I had my tent floating in New
- 9:21Jersey, one year. So I learned the low spots on
- 9:24the track there to, you know, it is one mistake, I keep having,
- 9:27which is I've been destroying my canopies.
- 9:32And I think I'm on my fifth canopy.
- 9:35I think I went through two or three this year.
- 9:38So, you know, paying attention to like wind conditions in these
- 9:42things, you know? Again, things I see you do is
- 9:44this. It just like, you know, you
- 9:46know, when it's going to rain, like the night before your like
- 9:49you're lowering your tent, but you can TP because it's going to
- 9:52be windy and these are just from, you know, hard learn
- 9:56mistakes or just, you know, talking to people.
- 10:00I'm just kind of paying attention to what happens in the
- 10:02pad I can seeing you know people that don't flip their canopies.
- 10:05I've seen them get destroyed in the wind or if it's not going to
- 10:09be winning it's raining. I see people setting up, you
- 10:11know, the canopy walls. And I just kind of clicks like
- 10:13oh they're going to keep their stuff in the electronics dry
- 10:16because everything's walled in there.
- 10:17Making a fort nice, nice. Now, get into the track.
- 10:23You know, I you've put me onto a few apps that save some some
- 10:28some Cash. Essentially you seem like you
- 10:33know again you know talk about that a little bit, this it just
- 10:37goes through years of experience and every dollar counts so if
- 10:41you can save some money on gas and it converts into a getting
- 10:44another rear tire for race, even the better so apps like GasBuddy
- 10:48or ones that work with traffic and routing.
- 10:52There's another one that I use for I think truck map I think
- 10:55it's called because you can basically say that I have a
- 10:58trailer so it will avoid Routes like in Connecticut that that
- 11:01don't allow trailers or Parkways.
- 11:04So there's stuff like that, that just makes things less stressful
- 11:08for your trip. I got on Spring Hill Parkway
- 11:11route, my trailer with this trailer and I got to the point
- 11:15where it said, like, you know, like 8 point something height
- 11:19and I was able to get off fairly and it was like a tight, tight
- 11:23tight. I'm surprised I didn't hit the
- 11:25car or hit the jersey barrier. It is it's very important to
- 11:28have apps. And that avoid, you know, low
- 11:31bridges and Roads that, you know, you're not supposed to be
- 11:34on because she have a trailer. That'd be a very expensive
- 11:36mistake. I've had a few of those
- 11:42definitely had a few of those. Now you can like talk about like
- 11:46you know, your trailer maintenance and just your car
- 11:48maintenance because you like it seems like you have a log of,
- 11:51you know, just about every mechanical part that can go
- 11:56wrong. You know, changing fluids and
- 11:58certain time I mean, right? So like I've explained to Crest
- 12:02like you're traveling 1,000 miles and you giving up vacation
- 12:05time and spending money to do all this.
- 12:08You really don't want to miss out on that weekend or your
- 12:11plans because of a mechanical failure whether it's your bike,
- 12:14your tow rig or even your car. So I'm very on top of making
- 12:18sure my trailer bearings are repacked at least once a year
- 12:21and making sure the Transmission in the gear flowing in my
- 12:24vehicle is is always clean and checked and topped off and make
- 12:28sure the bike is ready to go. That way.
- 12:30When I'm at the pits, I don't have to think about this.
- 12:32I can just throw a leg over and ride, right?
- 12:34Right? Yeah.
- 12:35I will say, you're one of the few people that have car issues
- 12:39or bike issues, but you also do a lot of that your work
- 12:43yourself. And now do you, you must use a
- 12:48friends and and and the web for a lot of information to help you
- 12:52along the way. I've just been kind of learning
- 12:55as I go. I one of my good friends that
- 12:57actually got me into this. And doing, this started taught
- 13:01me in the beginning on how to do these things and we worked on
- 13:03other people's bikes. And then I just kind of went
- 13:06from there on my own and just fortunately or unfortunately
- 13:10I've been racing the same bike for ten years.
- 13:11So, you know, once you kind of learn the ins and outs out of
- 13:14it, once you can do it blindfolded, right?
- 13:17That is true. I don't know if I can have a
- 13:19bike one bike for ten years. I'm working on it now so now
- 13:29what's planned for this year and you know, what do you have your
- 13:33sights set on? So for me I've always had an
- 13:39interest in trying where a just because they go to different
- 13:41tracks that I've never been to and I always at least want to go
- 13:45to one track new track to meet year and one that's been high on
- 13:51my list as Barber Motorsports Park.
- 13:53Okay. Okay.
- 13:53I went there a year or two ago to help pit crew for a buddy
- 13:57that was doing mode America and I saw the place and did a track
- 14:00walk and I'm like, I need to ride here.
- 14:03So at the end of the CCS season last year, I started looking at
- 14:07where and said, you know, I'm going to try these guys, they go
- 14:09to some tracks that I've been wanting to go to you, not you.
- 14:12Yeah. Hopefully do the same this year.
- 14:15I thought definitely want to try to get to Barber or maybe
- 14:17Talladega this year. Have you been out to?
- 14:22I know you did. Blackhawk have you done like
- 14:24Mid-Ohio or any of those tracks? Not Mid-Ohio but I've done as
- 14:30far as the Midwest goes, I've done Road America couple times
- 14:33which is an amazing facility. Amazing track.
- 14:36I want to Audubon a few times I did there North and South course
- 14:39has a couple times and I've been to Blackhawk a few times which
- 14:43I'm really a big fan of that place.
- 14:44Even though the track may not be very agreeable to most Riders.
- 14:48Yeah. Very tight.
- 14:49Very very small. I like it.
- 14:51I and I'm hoping to go Oh, back this year, I'm probably going to
- 14:55try to run back the as our Series this year I do like it
- 14:59because it really showed me how much space I have on these other
- 15:02tracks. When you, when you start going
- 15:06to the nicer tracks that are freshly paved you get very
- 15:08spoiled and then when you go to an old attract that's got the
- 15:11history and quite bumpy you kind of forget and it trees, can't
- 15:15forget those trees. The curbs, right?
- 15:19Don't look at the trees. Look at the track, weird.
- 15:23No, Black Hawk was it was a fun time.
- 15:26Looking forward to going back there.
- 15:29Now what do you think about, you know, Loudon and the Neymar
- 15:34series and the classic? And you know the big 250,000
- 15:38dollar purse. It was that that's bringing a
- 15:41lot of attention lately. A lot of attention, they just
- 15:44released the the current list of the entries for the classic
- 15:47today. Yep.
- 15:48And there's some big names on there man.
- 15:50I'm I'm really rooting for some of these Is these guys and I
- 15:53hope the locals can can really dice it up with with the top
- 15:56Pros that are going and it's going to be a fun race and it's
- 15:59nice that they're adding a couple extra laps to it to ya,
- 16:03for sure. I think it's 2525 and I assume
- 16:07some of these guys are going to have to come to Loudon before.
- 16:10So I've heard from a few people that some of the big names have
- 16:14already committed a few months ago, when the person money was
- 16:18being discussed, that they were going to go to a couple, the
- 16:20rounds obviously weather. You know, depending right just
- 16:24to get some extra see time because a track day is not going
- 16:26to be good enough for these guys to be competitive at that level,
- 16:30with some of the locals that have been racing at the same
- 16:32track for 15, 40 years. Well fixed.
- 16:37And through the the new track layout, right.
- 16:39I guess whenever that was yeah, who do you have your?
- 16:45You have a, you have a favorite yet or who do you think is
- 16:47gonna? So I actually just had this
- 16:49discussion before I came here with one of my friends who's a
- 16:53long-term loud and Rider, my top pick is going to be Josh Hayes,
- 16:58okay? And I think s going to be Shane
- 17:01because that's, that's his home track and he's the king of loud
- 17:03at this point, okay? Third, I'm thinking, it's either
- 17:07going to be Stefano or Tyler Scott.
- 17:10Okay. And I haven't done all the five,
- 17:14but I think it fifth place was going to be I forget the list
- 17:21now. I forget the other guy out that
- 17:22Scott green, what I think is going to be, probably fifth.
- 17:25Okay, but I'm missing like a fourth position.
- 17:27I haven't figured that out yet. Eric wood.
- 17:30I don't know if he can, if he can do that, many laps for that
- 17:33long though. That's that's true.
- 17:35Now, they were on a podcast the other day and they they're all
- 17:41they sound like they're training for it.
- 17:43I'm looking forward to seeing what would I think?
- 17:47Sweeney and Haren are going to be battling back and forth a
- 17:49lot. I think that they're writing
- 17:50style. And I think they'll be pretty
- 17:52close with the elapsed to it. I think that'll be pretty
- 17:54exciting to. Okay, I can't wait and I think
- 17:58it's going to spectate. Yeah.
- 18:00The right it. No, no I'm not.
- 18:01I mean I'm probably gonna race that day but not in that for
- 18:05sure. But yeah, no, I'm looking
- 18:08forward to it because, you know, the classic in general is always
- 18:11been the biggest weekend and it's 100 Runyan runneth, it's
- 18:14the oldest racing series in the country, so motorcycle racing.
- 18:21So it's a big deal. So I can't I gotta send Spike
- 18:27week two and it's the largest person in Sports history in the
- 18:31u.s. I believe to.
- 18:33So that's why it's bringing so much attention to for people to
- 18:35go. So I'm just hoping they bring
- 18:37additional bleaches because there's going to be a lot of
- 18:39people that watch a lot of X Racers are going to be going.
- 18:42Yeah I think so. I think so.
- 18:44You think they'll just kind of opened up the regular section.
- 18:48So folks the to check out the NASCAR seating.
- 18:52Yeah they always have them open but there's only usually few
- 18:55people out there, right? I'm looking for more bleachers,
- 18:58like intern six or Turn 3 like world.
- 19:00A lot of the passing action happens, I think you're good at,
- 19:02you're going to have to just be on your bike and just go to
- 19:04different places it just to see how it is.
- 19:06I guess the practices are going to be pretty cool to watch to
- 19:08though. Everything it's going to be
- 19:10exciting. Yeah, yeah.
- 19:11I mean from so and they probably going to have a they probably
- 19:14going to have at least maybe two days the last year didn't have
- 19:17to practices. They usually have to practice
- 19:19days on on that weekend so they might even bring that back so
- 19:22these guys get more time to dial their bikes and and yeah it's
- 19:27going to be people have their eyes on the top Pros but That's
- 19:30a real tough track to learn and it's going to take a lot of seat
- 19:33time. So yeah, that's why I still
- 19:36think the locals are going to are going to be up there in the
- 19:38top five top ten because they've got 10 15 years experience at
- 19:42this track. They know every bump in crevice
- 19:44of that place and what to avoid and the fast guys with the
- 19:48talent. They're just going to show up
- 19:50with this super fast bikes and, you know, have a struggle to
- 19:54learn. Yeah, I can, I can see that they
- 19:56used to perfect tracks Loudon is Is perfect in some way, right?
- 20:03It's funny. We've heard people, you know,
- 20:05that either race that Loudon and or heard of it, like, you know,
- 20:09I remember they would talk about adding around to the Atlantic
- 20:14region of ccs and somebody was just like, oh loudness a death
- 20:18trap. Yeah, yeah.
- 20:21And the the one year that they did that they mixed up a allowed
- 20:25an event, it Jersey and then a CCS event went to Loudoun,
- 20:28right? The Riders were Very worried or
- 20:32concerned at first but then some of the guys that I talk to that,
- 20:36I knew it CCS Races, they the more they got there, the more
- 20:39they felt comfortable and they actually enjoyed and said, I
- 20:42would come back here and actually, for the, for the
- 20:44Loudoun classic, there is a CCS Rider that did exactly that.
- 20:48And he's now going to enter in the classic for this year.
- 20:50Nice nice, man. It's gonna, it's gonna be fun.
- 20:54I can't wait, even I guess even going up because there's only
- 20:57two rounds before it. I think it's the third round.
- 21:00And how do you do have your top predictions?
- 21:04No, I mean, I guess I like Brandon Posh, but who knows what
- 21:09he's going to do on that seven six.
- 21:10Five to seven. Yeah, seven six.
- 21:12Five is a good bike to run around at Loudon.
- 21:15We see from Ian on his seven six five or six 75 depend on which
- 21:20bike is running. So I'm a fan of his local, you
- 21:27know, ya can't bet against Greenwood right?
- 21:32And Shane is, is I would probably say is there?
- 21:37Eric wood is He hasn't, he's riding, he's riding his 848.
- 21:44Oh, he's got 848. Bill like what?
- 21:46He raised back. I think it was Ama or before I
- 21:49got too loud and he may have a V2.
- 21:52So it'll be interesting because he's familiar with that bike.
- 21:55So you know, so I can't forget, Eli, he was doing that, right?
- 22:02He was doing that race for a while, on a single syllables.
- 22:04Imagine what he's going to do with three more cylinders?
- 22:06Yeah, I was going to say Eli as well because he did a 112.
- 22:09Probably for his second time or third third weekend on our six,
- 22:14right? Like, I think there's like to
- 22:16rub two rounds at so, you know, you know, I think it's 25 laps
- 22:23and it's going to be the cooler heads that finished yet to
- 22:27finish, right? So, I think, I think the people
- 22:30that can, you know, I think the pros and Greenwood and and and
- 22:34Eric, I think those guys, you know, their patient and so, you
- 22:41know, I'll bet my money on the older Riders because allowed me,
- 22:45I think you have to be patient to especially for 25 laps.
- 22:48And I've most I've done at Loudon is like, 17, laps in a
- 22:51race. And and so it's 24, too many
- 22:54laps for me, Not, you know, it's not bad.
- 22:59It's you know, it's what I do. It's what I like I started on so
- 23:04I, you know, I like it and I still want to reset it and plan
- 23:10to until until, you know, it doesn't make sense.
- 23:13But you know, from a from I've crashed and turned 32 times.
- 23:19So you know it's it's what it is.
- 23:21You just if you haven't crashed in turn three, we even allowed
- 23:24racer. I split my A bike in half one
- 23:27down there. Yeah, I heard stories about
- 23:32that. So and I think that's the
- 23:35biggest part is probably turned three, but it's also the slowest
- 23:38turn. So, you know, it is what it is,
- 23:42but, you know, definitely will be fun to watch.
- 23:43So people, you know, definitely come out and I do you think it's
- 23:48are the entries is already full. No, there's still going to be
- 23:53some some gaps for people, and I'm sure people will try to do
- 23:56some last-minute entries. Once they see the purse money,
- 23:59right, right. Yeah.
- 24:00I could even heard they maybe even that, I don't know if it's
- 24:03a Superbike world champion. Well, well yeah, I saw in the
- 24:07superbike because if you went in the US while you're not world
- 24:10champion, right? You just Richie Escalante's on
- 24:13the list and I'm actually surprised PJ, didn't because
- 24:15he's somewhat of a local and he he learned on that track when he
- 24:19was starting his racing career. Yeah, so you know it is some big
- 24:23names and some big Riders. So I mean last year the classic
- 24:27was fun to watch so and you know and as I can only imagine this
- 24:32year it's going to be wild. I'm looking forward to sitting
- 24:35in the bleachers with a drink and watching the happen and not
- 24:38being on the track. Doing that for 25 laps mom.
- 24:41S, 25 laps is nothing you can do 25 laps, you know, not
- 24:46consecutively fact you can do back-to-back races.
- 24:51This is at least 16. Well, I guess it depends on
- 24:54which track here at, you know, that, you know, I like the GT
- 24:58use and and stuff, I didn't do many last year, but the first
- 25:01year when I was going up and down which also helped me learn
- 25:04that the tracks doing the gtu. So I kind of got used to it.
- 25:09So, speaking of the classes, when you started reaching out to
- 25:12me a couple of years ago and said how do you pick your
- 25:15schedule? How do you know what you're
- 25:16doing? Like, how did you figure out
- 25:19your schedule now and your regions?
- 25:21I was calling you. I like what does this mean?
- 25:26What does that mean? Not it's you know I stress in
- 25:31early episodes like real to read real books rule book because
- 25:36yeah, that was the hardest part is trying to figure out.
- 25:38Do I want to do, you know middleweight Superbike
- 25:40middleweight Supersport? It was doing formula 40 that I
- 25:44want to do the Grand Prix. You know, was my bike legal
- 25:48pissed off? Yeah, my bike legal for this
- 25:50one, you know. Oh, that, that type of thing.
- 25:53And, you know, I think for me, I had to try a bunch of different
- 25:58classes and that's kind of what I did before, kind of settled in
- 26:03by like, halfway through the season, I kind of settled into
- 26:06what, which ones I liked that type of thing, but I think you
- 26:09really just depending on, you know, if you're middleweight
- 26:12bike, you just do all the middleweight races and see which
- 26:14one you like. And then that's kind of how I
- 26:18kind of figured out. But also, I was also playing
- 26:20with Because I don't really have a, you know, I think I did 20
- 26:25rounds in 2021, between ccs and Loudon to lat.
- 26:29And and so, I was also a picking races, just based on when I can
- 26:33leave to drive back, you know, and so I had to figure out like
- 26:36I got to say to the last race because that's what it is and
- 26:40that's kind of when you start chasing like, you know,
- 26:42championships, right? When you be like, okay, well
- 26:45it's jumping around is great to learn tracks, and learn to
- 26:48stuff. But if you try, if you want to
- 26:50try to get a A championship. You kind of have to pick the
- 26:53same races right all the time. And, and, and you, you had to
- 26:57tell me that, like, at least three or four times.
- 26:59That's the thing, is, when I started CCS, I was picking based
- 27:02on schedule. Like, I don't want to be there
- 27:03to the end of the day. Sunday, I've got a seven,
- 27:05eight-hour drive home. So I'm going to pick the races
- 27:07early Sunday pack up and leave, right.
- 27:09But once you start getting familiar with the different
- 27:13classes and what which ones you like with your competitive and
- 27:16your competitive classes and who you're riding with, then you say
- 27:19OK. Well now, Might want to do a
- 27:21championship. So I'm going to commit to the
- 27:23specific races and I'm going to follow the schedule and do and
- 27:26do the whole region. Right?
- 27:27Exactly. That's where we're at now.
- 27:29Yeah. And and so, you know, for me
- 27:33Nick 2023, I'm doing the 300 / moto3 class because I'm racing
- 27:38the KTM and coming out of the middleweight class and I had to
- 27:42for even looking at where and looking at a HRM, a looking at
- 27:46the schedule because you know I'm hoping to raise Laguna, so
- 27:49Luna sake. Probably next year.
- 27:52So, you know, just looking at the schedules and stuff like
- 27:55that. Now, it's just like, okay, I
- 27:56have a better understanding of what classes my bike fit in now,
- 28:00but when I first started, you know, I was completely clueless.
- 28:05Yeah, it's that. There is no easy way to learn
- 28:08it. See, and that's what I said.
- 28:09You just try different stuff and see what you like, because it's
- 28:12not going to be the same for you.
- 28:13You might like the middleweight raises.
- 28:14You might like the formula races or the GTS and you might like
- 28:18the lightweight stuff for the middleweight stuff, because you
- 28:20have different bikes. Give it a shot you first year or
- 28:23two and then you kind of figure out a plan in your head on what
- 28:26you want to commit to going forward.
- 28:27Yeah and I would say last year I did two bikes to clap to to
- 28:33light, ultra light weight, or 300 class and the middleweight
- 28:35class. And I had a lot of back-to-back
- 28:37races if. So if you're doing two different
- 28:40bike classes, you might yes. Yeah, I'm not.
- 28:44I'm only doing one bike this year, especially when the
- 28:47weather keeps raining and drying because you don't know what to
- 28:49do in between. I still haven't got no van.
- 28:51SE bike. Nice nice.
- 28:56So, so this year, new tracks couple of new tracks for you
- 29:00this year, still staying with the same bike and you're not
- 29:05going to get RS 60 or Yamaha R9, R 7.
- 29:11I mean, I am very comfortable with the Suzuki and I like the
- 29:13Suzuki's and I'm at the point that I know them, you know,
- 29:17mechanically inside and out. So it's easy for me because a
- 29:20big thing that I've always told people at the track when the
- 29:23talking about racing is, Don't be the different guy in the
- 29:27track. Don't get the rare bike.
- 29:29That no one has parts or knowledge for get what everyone
- 29:32has because there's a reason get the get the ninja, get the R6 or
- 29:36the Suzuki because if you crash or a part breaks like a
- 29:39rectifier or you know, radiator radiator, case in point, you can
- 29:45go around the paddock and generally find someone that will
- 29:47have a spare part and get you back on the track.
- 29:49Because once again, you spent all that time and money to get
- 29:52there, it would really suck if you have to Pack them and go
- 29:54home because of something like that.
- 29:56Yeah definitely definitely. Now this is something I got into
- 30:01last year because of you and you know and you know you started
- 30:06getting sponsorship and kind let's talk about you know what
- 30:08made you do it and you know you know your thoughts on it and is
- 30:13it a good thing? She'll everybody try to do it.
- 30:16Is it easy, you know? Or you know I mean that's kind
- 30:21of a loaded question because it all depends on what you're
- 30:24trying to. To get out of it or if you're
- 30:26just trying to get a discount on some stuff that you buy, you
- 30:29know, it might work if you are expecting or looking for a free
- 30:33product and you're willing to put in that kind of work, then
- 30:36that's fine as well. But you really have to know, you
- 30:39know, what you're committing to and what your expectations are
- 30:42from them, all right? So it's easier to get a discount
- 30:47than it is to say, get free stuff.
- 30:50Right in. And when it comes down to and I
- 30:52believe it was Eric wood from Woodcraft that was explaining.
- 30:55This is, you know, when you reach out to us for sponsorships
- 30:59we know what you want. You want free or discounted
- 31:01parts. But our question is, what are
- 31:03you going to do for us? Because slapping a sticker on a
- 31:06bike and putting our name in your results sheet or tagging Us
- 31:09in social media once in a while. It doesn't really do anything.
- 31:12You know, everyone's got the same stickers and all that no
- 31:15one's going to call. Look at a picture of Chris's
- 31:18bike on and go. Go always.
- 31:19Go to Woodcraft sticker. I'm going to call Woodcraft and
- 31:22say, I want whatever he has, you know, you have to put the the
- 31:25interactions in the face-to-face stuff with the Riders and
- 31:28explain and show why their parts are worth purchasing and to
- 31:33bring in business for them, got you and now and so it has more.
- 31:38And what about the free stuff is that like I mean, when you say
- 31:40put in work because you get some free stuff is fair to say and
- 31:45you get some discounts as well and you know, you you've been
- 31:49able To cultivate seems like a beautiful relationship with some
- 31:52vendors that give you some, some love, it wasn't easy, and the
- 31:58expectation when people do sponsorships is well I'm a fast
- 32:02rider. Okay, well, a lot of those guys
- 32:04don't really last more than two or three years.
- 32:06So sponsors kind of look into that because they want to they
- 32:09want a longer commitment. They want someone that's going
- 32:11to be at the track and speed and it doesn't necessarily mean
- 32:14dollars. Like I said not, everyone is
- 32:16going to go and say I want what Chris has Has, he won that race?
- 32:20All right, they're going to go to and call them and say, I want
- 32:24what Chris has because I talked with him, he explained the
- 32:26parts. He was showing how they're
- 32:28useful in the replace, how to replace them in this.
- 32:31I want to try your stuff so going back to the whole
- 32:36commitment thing if for free products.
- 32:37For example, I send out newsletters every month to my
- 32:41sponsors with race results Championship status, changes to
- 32:45the bike. What the next event is including
- 32:49Target photos that I buy from from all the various
- 32:52photographers at the track, right?
- 32:54I will send out periodically emails with.
- 32:57Hey, do you have any products you need me to push or hashtags
- 33:00or what do you need me to promote for you?
- 33:03What do you, what are you looking to get out of me as well
- 33:06as at the end of the year, I'll send out social media stats
- 33:09which shows the age. The gender, the geographical
- 33:14ocean location. That way I can say I'm targeting
- 33:16your audience that you want. I'm getting this Angel.
- 33:19This Age rate. I'm getting this part of the
- 33:21country and these are the, you know, the males between 18, to
- 33:2635, or your targeted customer for racing and track products.
- 33:31Wow, not to get too much into it.
- 33:33But what do we want to? I mean, because a lot of you
- 33:36know some people may just think it's easy or some people may
- 33:39think it's not worth it, you know for a while I you know, I
- 33:42didn't even I didn't even think about I was trying to just fix
- 33:45my ride in and ride better ride better and not thinking like, oh
- 33:48maybe I should get this. It's and stuff and cut maybe
- 33:51work, try to to get some some some not necessary free stuff
- 33:54because you got to work for it as you just mentioned but it in
- 33:59after being able to do it for a couple years now.
- 34:01It's like yeah everything helps and I mean unless you're
- 34:05financially stable and you don't care about discounts or you
- 34:07don't want to put stickers on your bike and you just want your
- 34:10own decals and logos in there. Then that's fine.
- 34:14But the big thing that I have that I stress for likes new true
- 34:17writers because they'll apply for everything.
- 34:19And you don't want to be a rolling billboard, right?
- 34:22There's a couple riders that their whole bike is just full of
- 34:25sponsorship stickers or brands that they've purchased.
- 34:28The problem is is when you look at a photo, you can identify one
- 34:31brand because they're just plastered with all these
- 34:34different stickers. That's not attractive to
- 34:36sponsors because they want, they want to get the attention in the
- 34:39photos. Or when you see them on the
- 34:40track, that's you, you don't want to look like a mural.
- 34:44I got to take some stickers off my bike.
- 34:48But you understand what I'm saying?
- 34:50II do it's marketing and and these folks, these companies
- 34:55they want to get the value from what put a given you.
- 34:59And you know 30% 40% on a discount is is great, especially
- 35:04if you crash a lot or, you know, your camera fall off the
- 35:07straight away. Like my GoPro did down at NC
- 35:10bike because I didn't, you know, safety wire it to my bike.
- 35:14Well, it's not just crashing to its maintenance.
- 35:17You do a lot of riding you're going to burn through a lot of
- 35:19oil. You're going to burn through a
- 35:20lot of tires. You just going to use a lot of
- 35:22parts. Shout out to motul and Magellan
- 35:25and Michelin. Yeah, of course.
- 35:27Good, good. Good.
- 35:27People's use Michelin tires to I use Mitchell and ties for sure
- 35:33then motel or the well. So but that is the thing, you
- 35:37know, Finding Brands you like. And if you do like these
- 35:41products then you know, look to see if they have sponsor
- 35:43programs and it pretty much apply, right?
- 35:47and another thing of advice that I personally have given out to
- 35:50Riders is Don't pick the sponsorship just because they're
- 35:55giving you an offer. If it's not something that you
- 35:57like or would want to use, don't waste your time right.
- 36:00So I've seen in its more common with influencers that they'll
- 36:04whatever gets thrown at them. And you know, let's just say a
- 36:07suit or a jacket. They got for free because
- 36:09they're an influencer and if they crashed and the suit tort
- 36:12tears apart they end up message me going, man, I really wish I
- 36:16didn't take the suit and I would have read a by one of a better
- 36:19quality or any sort of Brands like that.
- 36:22Got ya. Fisher.
- 36:23You definitely don't want free stuff just to be free.
- 36:26You kind of have to like it. I mean I think I heard the
- 36:28Shaquille O'Neal says but it's anything anybody in general?
- 36:31Like, why would you, you know, invest, or spend time in
- 36:36something? You don't really like, I mean, I
- 36:37guess if you just want to check right?
- 36:40I mean I will only do sponsorships with brands that I
- 36:44would or have bought if I had to pay full retail, I just I've had
- 36:49offers with other helmets and all that and it's like, I
- 36:51appreciate that but I'll only way awry.
- 36:54So if I can't get a deal with her I'm still going to buy them
- 36:57but I turned down other other brands got you?
- 37:00Got you now the brands that like talking to the track and talk
- 37:05about you know brands at the track that you deal with and and
- 37:08and you know because your Mitchell in now you and you just
- 37:11traveling up and down how do you find, you know, working with
- 37:16that organization and and you know, dealing with different
- 37:19type of, guys up, for lack, of a better word at the tracks.
- 37:23It's good. I mean, you build a
- 37:24relationship, the more you ride with them, the more you work
- 37:27with them and sometimes you go like in the South, for example,
- 37:31there's often not a Michelin vendor, so I usually will bring
- 37:35tires with me and have a different, vendor install them.
- 37:39And if I have questions regarding the tire, where the
- 37:42vendors that I do work with normally, in the season, they
- 37:44great. I can send them photos and ask
- 37:46questions and they respond. Nice, nice.
- 37:50Have you tried other brands besides the Mitchell in OU kind
- 37:52of was Like always mentioning. So the other thing that I highly
- 37:56recommend for track-day riders or even Racers, when they're
- 37:59starting is to try everything, you don't know what you're going
- 38:03to. Like unless you try same thing
- 38:05with going to different racetracks.
- 38:06So I've written on every Tire with the exception of
- 38:10Bridgestone but I have used Bridgestone rains.
- 38:13You got you. Yeah.
- 38:14I think we're just all trained. I think I've tried every one
- 38:18except for Dunlop. That's the only one I haven't
- 38:22tried. But other than that and you
- 38:25know, it's funny. I wrote Mitchell ends and then,
- 38:28you know, switch to Bridgestone for a quick second and and I'm
- 38:32back to my children and I thought about going up early for
- 38:35a little bit but I think I'm going to run this year on a
- 38:37Mitchell ins because I have honestly no complaints about
- 38:40him. I actually started my race My
- 38:42Race season when I started as a rookie on Continental.
- 38:45Huh there's a few people that run.
- 38:47Continental and bam. Yeah.
- 38:52Maybe cars that might have had some Continentals as that's
- 38:56about it. Now let's talk about like, you
- 38:58know, show you the maintenance, you do on your bike you pretty
- 39:01much do all of it but you know like you do tear down your
- 39:05engine as well. You tear down your suspension.
- 39:07Do you send those things out and kind of like what do you do in
- 39:10the offseason because you know until until you go racing again
- 39:14we're at this year's an anomaly because like the last few years
- 39:16there was like no offseason you around town for two to three
- 39:20years. So it maintenance is a big thing
- 39:23because you if your ex You need to have a consistent performing
- 39:29vehicle vehicle or motorcycle. And if you don't keep up with
- 39:32the maintenance, then the, the bike won't perform consistently
- 39:37in. It's going to impact your
- 39:39performance and you won't feel confident in the bike to ride it
- 39:42at your potential. So to answer your question, I
- 39:47don't work on motor or suspension internals okay.
- 39:50Those are I take them off and I hand him to the professionals
- 39:53and say, work your magic. Anything else is mine?
- 39:57So right after Daytona, I swap the frames because I had a crack
- 40:01in one of them from from an old wreck.
- 40:04And I do this every year to I will re grease and repack the
- 40:08chassis bearings or replace them and that's including the
- 40:11linkage. The steering head bearings, the
- 40:14the swing arm bearings, even the wheel bearings to write because
- 40:18as soon as those things start to go the bikes, just not going to
- 40:21feel right? Yeah, absolutely, right.
- 40:24And yet a first person The that I heard and it could you tell me
- 40:29that you're doing all these things?
- 40:30And I was like, I didn't even think of all that and, you know,
- 40:35breaks Yasin. I clean.
- 40:37I clean my brake Pistons every other race weekend.
- 40:40Wow. Just to keep that performance.
- 40:43Just to keep the dust from building up up there and causing
- 40:45brake failures. Because when it comes down to
- 40:48it, it's my life, you know, not only do I going to endanger my
- 40:52own life but my fellow Racers around me and You know, I I just
- 40:57don't know. How would, you know, go on,
- 41:00right? Right.
- 41:01If I cause somebody to get severely hurt or worse because I
- 41:04was being lazy with my maintenance.
- 41:06Yeah. Okay.
- 41:06You maintenance done, folks, get them done because it's very
- 41:10important. I think I slacked off last year
- 41:13a little bit because I definitely had, like issues at
- 41:17the beginning, the year that I could have avoided.
- 41:19If I was, if I just looked my bike over.
- 41:21Well, listen to me. Yeah, exactly.
- 41:23Well, isn't it to Jim? Some do and I do a lot more and
- 41:28it's helped me out a lot going up and down the east coast and
- 41:31you know it's made my life easier because I act you know,
- 41:35going to these places by yourself and just being
- 41:37completely green. Sure.
- 41:38The track is most people are friendly and and somebody will
- 41:42point in the right direction, but sometimes you don't, you
- 41:44know, you don't want to overstep your welcome or whatever, the
- 41:46case may order, that's how I kind of feel about it.
- 41:48So it was easy that you know how we connected and and then just
- 41:51going down going down all these different tracks and me last few
- 41:55years. It's been A pretty cool trick.
- 41:57You like two years to Fort before we started changing a
- 42:00gearing for racetracks. I took about like six months.
- 42:03But like I said, we got to date owner and in October I was
- 42:09changing my giri the first year. That's right.
- 42:14Because that's that's when I really started talking to you, a
- 42:17lot is when we had the garage and you were frustrated because
- 42:20you brought your bike to a shop to have them, do the Daytona
- 42:23gearing and they messed the gearing up.
- 42:24They did the wrong. Ratio in the wrong size chain
- 42:28and you couldn't even get your tire warmer on.
- 42:29Yeah. And you ready to pack up and go
- 42:31home when Mike? What are you out of your mind?
- 42:33How much did you spend to get down here and do all this?
- 42:36And I was like, screw that. I'm like oh go to the vendor go.
- 42:38By another chain will get, we're going to fix this.
- 42:40You're going to get him into the next practice.
- 42:42Yep. And that that's how it worked
- 42:44out and you know, I did fairly well that that weekend and, you
- 42:49know it but it's pretty wild because it's like You know, if
- 42:54you don't know certain things, you kind of just get stuck, so
- 42:58it's always good to just have somebody that you that kind of
- 43:02help you out especially in the beginning and, and make it easy.
- 43:06So, everybody should have a gym when I go around water first.
- 43:09That's the problem with uzuki's because I've been racing so long
- 43:12in the same bike. Everyone's like, oh, you have a
- 43:13problem with the Jacks. Are you looking for a part of
- 43:15the guy over there with with the multiple canopies?
- 43:17He's probably got the tool, the part or know how to get it or
- 43:21get one for right and As other thing, right?
- 43:23You like the amount of tools that you have, it is like legit.
- 43:26Like you have it, you have a tool.
- 43:27You have it. You have to have everything you
- 43:29need. It's not always easy start.
- 43:31Now, which we talked about on some other episodes but, you
- 43:34know, like your to your, you know, your toolbox, got
- 43:38everything. And so I actually just went
- 43:40through it in October and started taking out duplicates
- 43:43and things that I don't need. But my toolbox is essentially
- 43:46set up for me to disassemble the bike all the way down to a frame
- 43:50and then built it back up. In that event because I did it
- 43:53at a friend's garage after Daytona.
- 43:55Nice. So I've got all the special
- 43:57sockets and everything there. And everything's all organized
- 44:00for quick and easy access. Nice, nice.
- 44:02That way. You know, when we have a quick
- 44:04rain, you know, when it starts to rain and you got to change
- 44:06your tires really quick, I can go.
- 44:07Hey, Chris, go into that second drawer.
- 44:08On the left hand side, get me, the 10 millimeter socket.
- 44:12Yeah. And that and if that exactly how
- 44:14it sounds and I'm like and I still be like, oh you talking
- 44:16about, I've gotten better, I've gotten better, you know.
- 44:22My toolbox game is is coming up. I was actually thinking about
- 44:26you know pulling out some tools that I may not need.
- 44:28But now that you said all that them, they're going back in well
- 44:34and he won. You want to shout out or
- 44:37responses you want to talk about you know, and thank you for
- 44:40coming on. It's been a wealth of knowledge
- 44:43and I can't wait to think April. All your Kong Racing next month.
- 44:47I wish I was You still can still have the opportunity, but
- 44:52fingers crossed like Chris mentioned.
- 44:55I'm, I'm big on multiple. I've been partnered with them
- 44:59since I think 2013 2014 about now.
- 45:04You know, they've always been really great to me, and I'm very
- 45:07fortunate to now have a partnership with Michelin as
- 45:10well, and looking forward to their their new power
- 45:12Performance Tire that just came out.
- 45:14So I'm going to be using that this year.
- 45:16Nice, I just got on motul. I'm not a partner.
- 45:18Yeah, but I get discount. Well, thanks for coming down.
- 45:21Is to be forever. Cool podcast, my name is Rex 45.
