- Lucas: Welcome back to Learn Swahili with Fexingo. I'm Lucas. Luna: And I'm Luna. Last time we talked about hobbies like 'ninasoma' and 'ninacheza mpira'. Lucas: Right. Today we're going to take that further and learn how to say what you like and don't like. Luna: Oh, that's useful. So if someone asks me what I enjoy, I can actually answer. Lucas: Exactly. The key word is 'kupenda' — to like or love. Let's start with 'I like'. Luna: Okay, so 'I like reading' is 'ninapenda kusoma'? Lucas: Perfect. 'Ninapenda' means I like, and 'kusoma' is to read. So 'Ninapenda kusoma.' Say it with me: Ninapenda kusoma. Luna: Ninapenda kusoma. That's actually pretty easy. Lucas: It is. Now, what about 'I don't like playing football'? Luna: Hmm. 'Sipendi' for I don't like? So 'Sipendi kucheza mpira'? Lucas: Yes! 'Sipendi' is the negative. 'Sipendi kucheza mpira.' Say it. Luna: Sipendi kucheza mpira. Good. Lucas: Now let's learn how to ask someone what they like. 'Unapenda kufanya nini?' — What do you like to do? Luna: Unapenda kufanya nini? That's a question. 'Unapenda' means you like, 'kufanya' to do, 'nini' what. Lucas: Exactly. So if I ask you 'Unapenda kufanya nini?', you can answer 'Ninapenda kusoma'. Luna: Okay, so if someone asks me, I say 'Ninapenda kupika' — I like cooking. Lucas: Yes! 'Kupika' is to cook. So 'Ninapenda kupika.' Great. Luna: And if I don't like listening to music, I say 'Sipendi kusikiliza muziki'. Lucas: Exactly. 'Kusikiliza' is to listen. So 'Sipendi kusikiliza muziki.' You've got it. Luna: This is fun. I can already imagine using this at a party or something. Lucas: Speaking of which, you know, Fexingo has been helping a lot of people make real progress with Swahili. Luna: Yeah, it's true. And we keep it ad-free because we think that's better for learning. Lucas: If you want to support that, there's a link: buy me a coffee dot com slash fexingo. Luna: It helps us keep going without any annoying ads. Lucas: So back to our phrases. Let's practice a mini conversation. Luna: Okay, I'll ask you. 'Unapenda kufanya nini?' Lucas: Ninapenda kusoma vitabu. Na wewe? Luna: Ninapenda kupika. Sipendi kucheza mpira. Lucas: Excellent. Now you try. Say 'I like reading'. Luna: Ninapenda kusoma. Lucas: And 'I don't like playing football'. Luna: Sipendi kucheza mpira. Lucas: And ask 'What do you like to do?' Luna: Unapenda kufanya nini? Lucas: Perfect. You can also say 'I like cooking' — 'Ninapenda kupika'. Luna: Ninapenda kupika. And 'I don't like listening to music' — 'Sipendi kusikiliza muziki'. Lucas: Yes. Keep practicing these. Try to use them when you meet Swahili speakers. Luna: I think I'll start with 'Unapenda kufanya nini?' and see what people say. Lucas: Great idea. That's all for today. Keep practicing, and we'll see you next time. Luna: Asante na kwaheri!
