- 0:05This is a show where we discuss the critical Crossroads, the
- 0:08Shape, SpaceX, Tesla X, The Boring Company, and Neuralink.
- 0:13I'm your host, Will Walden. Today's episode is about
- 0:17Spacex's Starship and Boca Chica's Starbase, Texas.
- 0:20Now, SpaceX is swiftly progressing with its Starship
- 0:24program done at Boca Chica Starbase.
- 0:26And there are preparations for the upcoming third flight test
- 0:31happening right now. Now, this follows A substantial
- 0:35successful orbital test in November.
- 0:37And this is the next step, IFT 3 Now.
- 0:40The gap between Spacex's first and 2nd Starship test flight
- 0:44spanning 8 months was largely due to regulatory and
- 0:47environmental compliance, specifically with the Federal
- 0:50Aviation Administration, the FAA and the Fish and Wildlife
- 0:54Service, the FWS. The delay involved the
- 0:57construction of a new water dilute system, essentially for
- 1:00mitigating the intense thrust of the Rockets. 33 Raptor 2
- 1:03engines. Now the necessity of the water
- 1:06dilute system became evident after the first Test flight in
- 1:09April result in insignificant damage to the launchpad its
- 1:12implementation. Subsequent approval by the FWS
- 1:15paved the way for the successful November test, which achieved
- 1:19critical milestones like engine stability and stage separation
- 1:23despite the loss of both vehicles during that flight.
- 1:26With the water deluge system now operational, SpaceX is well
- 1:29positioned to shorten the lead time for its third test flight
- 1:33and the transportation of the Starship booster and spacecraft
- 1:35to the launch site. And the ongoing evaluation of
- 1:38the second test rocket, including its electrical systems
- 1:41and its fuel tanks, indicate readiness for imminent testing
- 1:45phases in the next few weeks. Now a recent Spin Prime test on
- 1:49the second stage Starship aimed at ensuring fuel and oxidizer
- 1:53delivery to the engines marks a precursor to the more crucial
- 1:56static fire test and success in these tests will be critical for
- 2:00the Rockets readiness for the upcoming launch of IFT 3.
- 2:03Now the movement of the Starship Super Heavy booster to the
- 2:06launch site is another positive indicator for progress.
- 2:09This contrast with the three month delay after the first Test
- 2:12flight, highlighting Spacex's efforts to streamline the
- 2:15testing in the launch processes, especially considering Spacex's
- 2:18Starship role in NASA's Artemis program for lunar exploration.
- 2:23And now the transport and the assembly of Ship 28 and Booster
- 2:2710 at the launch site, coupled with a proposed condensed
- 2:30testing schedule, reflects Spacex's objective for a more
- 2:33efficient test campaign. These developments are very
- 2:36crucial for upcoming missions, including those under NASA's HLS
- 2:40initiatives as the human Landing system for the Artemis program
- 2:45and Spacex's launchpad and infrastructure.
- 2:47They've undergone significant upgrades post the second flight
- 2:50test. CEO Elon Musk's affirmation of
- 2:53the pads minimal damage and the ongoing refurbishments indicate
- 2:57a focus on enhancing the site's resilience and the turn around
- 3:00capabilities of the launches. Now, besides the pad
- 3:04improvements, the orbital tank farm has received major upgrades
- 3:07too, including additional subcoolers, pumps, and
- 3:10horizontal tanks. And these enhancements aimed to
- 3:12significantly reduce propellant loading times, further
- 3:15optimizing launch procedures. Now, looking forward, though,
- 3:20SpaceX has several vehicles lined up for future test
- 3:23flights. Ships 293031 to 32 along with
- 3:26boosters 11/12/13 and 14 are in various stages of preparation.
- 3:31Elon Musk's announcement regarding the transition from
- 3:34version one to version two of Starship hints and improvements
- 3:38in reliability, fuel capacity and reducing dry mass and this
- 3:42will be better for performance inefficiency of Starship going
- 3:46forward. The new High Bay construction at
- 3:48the production site as well it's not just about the Rockets
- 3:51alongside the Star Factory is set to significantly boost the
- 3:54production rate of Starship vehicles.
- 3:56The factory will mirror the layout of the existing Mega Bay
- 4:00One, featuring multiple work stands and turntables for
- 4:04efficient and easier assembly. Now, as SpaceX prepares for the
- 4:08third Starship test flight, the 2nd test success involving a hot
- 4:12staging sequence and lasting over 8 minutes, it's a really
- 4:16high benchmark for I FT3. The upcoming test is expected to
- 4:19follow a similar profile including propellant transfer
- 4:22demonstration which is a critical aspect of the future
- 4:27HLS missions for the Artemis 3 mission and the Artemis four and
- 4:32five etcetera HLS missions for NASA now.
- 4:37The upcoming test will incorporate major updates from
- 4:39Flight 2 though such as electronic thrust vector control
- 4:43or TVC hot staging and an upgraded flight termination
- 4:47system. The FTS and a key focus will be
- 4:49demonstrating propellant transfer in space now.
- 4:53This is going to be the first time this will ever happen in
- 4:56such a large rocket. Pre launch procedures will
- 4:59involve positioning the ship atop the booster called stacking
- 5:03Use the Meccazilla chopstick arms, a unique feature of
- 5:06Spacex's launch infrastructure which is unlike anything else
- 5:10out there. Usually a rocket is taken out to
- 5:13the launchpad horizontal and raised up slowly to the vertical
- 5:19position and ready for launch. Now this system is designed for
- 5:23both assembly and future landings in recovery of the
- 5:27Starship and also the booster. These arms, those mechazilla,
- 5:31will catch the booster and will catch the Starship on its way
- 5:35back down to Earth to land. It's incredible technology if it
- 5:38works and we're not going to see a Mechazilla landing or a catch
- 5:43if you will, probably until either late next year.
- 5:47They may actually be building another launch stand right now
- 5:52that they will be using just for catching of these vehicles so
- 5:57they don't blow up the initial launchpad that they have there
- 6:01right now. It's got to be a wild here for
- 6:03SpaceX at Starbase. Now in preparation for the
- 6:06upcoming launch, SpaceX has implemented several enhancements
- 6:10to the launchpad at stage zero. These include a water cooled
- 6:14steel plate and refurbished hold down points and these will be
- 6:17aimed at protecting the pad from the intense forces and the heat
- 6:20generated during the launch. Now these improvements also
- 6:23coupled with the absence of traditional flame trenches, is a
- 6:27breakthrough in space travel because they can build these
- 6:31things kind of anywhere. Now, SpaceX will be continuing
- 6:35with the IFT 3 flight possibly early next year, according to
- 6:41Cathy leaders, who's the lead of Starbase at Boca Chica, Texas,
