- 0:34Speaker 3: begin on Let's talk.
- 0:36Speaker 4: Hello, ladies and gentlemen. Missus curly with Let's talk, and
- 0:39Speaker 4: I have in the building. I got Miss Lisa Odie
- 0:43Speaker 4: and mister Hollins Lewis. Hello, Hello, And this has been
- 0:49Speaker 4: this has been a really interesting kind of I guess
- 0:54Speaker 4: week prep, Chinda or weekend. I guess I think for
- 1:01Speaker 4: prepping for the show, there's been a lot, a lot
- 1:03Speaker 4: of crazy, crazy stuff going on and trying to figure
- 1:09Speaker 4: out where and how and what to do and and
- 1:11Speaker 4: and and what makes sense to even discuss.
- 1:14Speaker 2: But one of the one.
- 1:17Speaker 5: Of the issues that I think that we have really
- 1:21Speaker 5: kind of agreed all on quarterbacks.
- 1:26Speaker 6: Especially one in particular.
- 1:27Speaker 4: One in particular and can we can make the case
- 1:31Speaker 4: the oldest Yeah, Grandpapa up and we're talking about Philip
- 1:38Speaker 4: Rivers interesting story. Did you know in his senior year
- 1:42Speaker 4: he graduated two thousand from high school? Did you know
- 1:46Speaker 4: he was almost coming to g W George Washington High School?
- 1:50Speaker 4: He actually was here. His girlfriend, which I think is
- 1:52Speaker 4: his wife, because he's the one. She's the one he
- 1:55Speaker 4: has like the twenty kids with, but his his now
- 2:01Speaker 4: and I think girlfriend at the time, graduated from George
- 2:04Speaker 4: Washington High School and he was actually here on campus.
- 2:08Speaker 4: He was, you know, throwing the ball and with coach.
- 2:11Speaker 4: It was the year after I left. And for whatever,
- 2:14Speaker 4: I don't I didn't get the backstory, but he decided
- 2:17Speaker 4: not to come in.
- 2:17Speaker 6: Oh my goodness.
- 2:19Speaker 5: Yeah I didn't. Yeah, I didn't. I didn't know that.
- 2:22Speaker 5: I didn't know anything about that.
- 2:25Speaker 7: I mean, is this is this the year twenty twenty five,
- 2:27Speaker 7: and we've got like forty year old quarterback. I mean,
- 2:29Speaker 7: we've got Aaron Rodgers who thought he would always be
- 2:31Speaker 7: the oldest quarterback on the field in this in this season.
- 2:35Speaker 6: And oh, man Phillips, hold my grandchild watching.
- 2:41Speaker 4: Oh my grandchild. That is far that's crazy. Oh my grandchild.
- 2:48Speaker 6: Wow.
- 2:51Speaker 4: And and with that, and when you and when you
- 2:55Speaker 4: actually when you actually start to like take the serious
- 2:59Speaker 4: approach to it about playing well, five years, he hasn't
- 3:04Speaker 4: played since twenty twenty. The COVID year was his last year.
- 3:07Speaker 2: Yep. And I think he was with the coach.
- 3:09Speaker 6: Then, yes, yes, yes, at the time he was time.
- 3:15Speaker 7: Okay, So does that explain why the Colts wanted him
- 3:19Speaker 7: in particular rather than some because there's some other available
- 3:22Speaker 7: quarterbacks that may be younger and more agile, but they
- 3:27Speaker 7: chose him. I didn't realize he had that affiliation with
- 3:30Speaker 7: with the Colts earlier, like in twenty twenty.
- 3:33Speaker 4: Well, the playbook, Yeah, so that makes sense.
- 3:36Speaker 5: That would have been my thought process for them because
- 3:40Speaker 5: he would know a lot about.
- 3:43Speaker 4: The playbook and system. And from what I understand, he
- 3:48Speaker 4: was coaching high school football and he was whatever playbook
- 3:51Speaker 4: they're running, he was running quote unquote the high school
- 3:53Speaker 4: version of that. So he was running a similar system
- 3:57Speaker 4: for the last four years because he was, you know,
- 3:59Speaker 4: coaching ball high school level. So I'm gonna ask you
- 4:04Speaker 4: both this question and to get your answer. It's okay,
- 4:10Speaker 4: So he's already done it. Okay, he's already he's already
- 4:14Speaker 4: done it. Do you think it was something worth And
- 4:20Speaker 4: when I say worth doing, because I look at it.
- 4:22Speaker 4: I'm gonna give you my view and then you guys
- 4:25Speaker 4: can give me your views.
- 4:27Speaker 2: I see that as.
- 4:29Speaker 4: Major risk and because when we as we as we
- 4:33Speaker 4: will talk later about the number of injuries and the
- 4:36Speaker 4: depth of some of those injuries. Where football is in
- 4:39Speaker 4: the NFL, where football is in college, where it is
- 4:42Speaker 4: in high school, injury injuries are.
- 4:48Speaker 2: Are the talk. It is the talk.
- 4:50Speaker 5: And now when you start to when you start to
- 4:53Speaker 5: jump back into a uniform that you hadn't been in
- 4:56Speaker 5: in five years and you want to go out and
- 4:58Speaker 5: start like play at that level, I just think it's
- 5:03Speaker 5: like unbelievable and it shouldn't be even allowed.
- 5:09Speaker 2: Well, I think I think here's what I think on that.
- 5:13Speaker 4: Number One, quarterbacks can't necessarily they aren't getting hit like
- 5:17Speaker 4: they used to be, right, So you you really can't
- 5:19Speaker 4: hit a quarterback. And that's whether after they throw the
- 5:22Speaker 4: ball or anything like that. Number Two, he's not a
- 5:24Speaker 4: mobile guy, so he ain't gonna get out here and run.
- 5:27Speaker 4: So if he escapes the pocket, he's just falling for
- 5:30Speaker 4: two or three yards, So he's not gonna get out
- 5:32Speaker 4: here and run. So and with the knowledge that he
- 5:35Speaker 4: has with the offense, his processing speed appeared to be there.
- 5:38Speaker 2: He was.
- 5:39Speaker 4: His stat line was he was eighteen for twenty seven
- 5:42Speaker 4: one hundred and twenty yards. Not great, but really excellent
- 5:45Speaker 4: for not five years. I want to say that you
- 5:47Speaker 4: said when you start talking being out of the league
- 5:49Speaker 4: for five years and jumping back in with that, those
- 5:52Speaker 4: are numbers one touchdown and he had just that pick
- 5:55Speaker 4: late when they were trying to come back and he
- 5:56Speaker 4: had a team in the position to win. So I like,
- 5:59Speaker 4: after I thought about it, because I was thinking the
- 6:01Speaker 4: same thing, like, is there not another dude that they
- 6:04Speaker 4: could get? But with the nature of the quarterback position,
- 6:07Speaker 4: this ain't net selling bad. And I think specifically at
- 6:10Speaker 4: the quarterback position, with how the rules are, we're gonna
- 6:13Speaker 4: see guys playing older and older and older, and those
- 6:15Speaker 4: guys who can process what's going on and those guys
- 6:19Speaker 4: who can sling it. Yeah.
- 6:20Speaker 7: And I also think that the coaches, the Indianapolis Colts
- 6:24Speaker 7: coaches were very conservative in their call, you know, play
- 6:27Speaker 7: calling for him. They ensured that he wouldn't be in
- 6:30Speaker 7: a position they played a lot of running, a lot
- 6:32Speaker 7: of running plays they called those, and very short passes,
- 6:37Speaker 7: things you know that were quick that he could get
- 6:40Speaker 7: off before the line could get to him. So kudos
- 6:43Speaker 7: to the coaching for doing that, you know, the coaching staff.
- 6:47Speaker 7: But also I mean, I'm just amazed. Like when at
- 6:49Speaker 7: first I switched over to the game, of course I
- 6:51Speaker 7: was watching the package as well, and when I switched over,
- 6:54Speaker 7: I was nervous for the guy.
- 6:55Speaker 4: Like I was like.
- 6:56Speaker 7: Sitting there thinking, oh my gosh, are they gonna card
- 6:58Speaker 7: him off on an ambulance like one had yet?
- 7:00Speaker 6: Because there's a reason why these guys go through summer conditioning,
- 7:05Speaker 6: weight training, all these things.
- 7:07Speaker 7: It's because they're going to be facing these these other
- 7:09Speaker 7: big guys. And that was a big concern for me
- 7:11Speaker 7: because we're at the end of the season and you know,
- 7:14Speaker 7: these guys are in their prime right now.
- 7:16Speaker 4: But but do you think it's an advantage because he
- 7:19Speaker 4: hasn't yet been hit, he's you know, his body is
- 7:22Speaker 4: is not beat up at this point. Do you think
- 7:24Speaker 4: it's a little bit advantage in him coming.
- 7:25Speaker 7: Fresh stilling a forty four year old body.
- 7:29Speaker 6: I'm sorry, I know what I feel like in the morning.
- 7:32Speaker 4: And he's and he's already he's already been beat up. Yeah,
- 7:36Speaker 4: but recovery though he is five years of just not
- 7:39Speaker 4: getting hit. So I don't even know. I don't even
- 7:43Speaker 4: know how many years I've had quo en quote recovery,
- 7:47Speaker 4: but it does not feel like recovery. And to your point, listen,
- 7:50Speaker 4: he got sacked one time and then, like I said,
- 7:53Speaker 4: they threw twenty seven passes, but they had twenty nine
- 7:55Speaker 4: rushes right right right, well thirty rushes actually, so the
- 7:59Speaker 4: coaches were conservad they balanced it out. So I don't know, man,
- 8:03Speaker 4: I think we're going to see this a little bit longer.
- 8:06Speaker 3: Now.
- 8:06Speaker 4: The controversy in this is Cam Newton. Yeah, but he's
- 8:10Speaker 4: not happy.
- 8:11Speaker 2: But Cam, you can't throw the ball, bro, You're not
- 8:15Speaker 2: the football no more.
- 8:17Speaker 4: I mean over so like if you can't, if you're
- 8:22Speaker 4: not an elite passer, then your ability to play into
- 8:26Speaker 4: your forties is not going to be there. See his issue,
- 8:32Speaker 4: to me, his issue is he's not he's he's seeing
- 8:36Speaker 4: him through his own eyes. He's not really seeing where
- 8:40Speaker 4: the game is, what he would actually what he what
- 8:45Speaker 4: his skill set actually could bring or can't bring to
- 8:48Speaker 4: the game now.
- 8:49Speaker 2: But how could you not see that?
- 8:52Speaker 5: But I don't know a player who if you ask me, well, no,
- 8:58Speaker 5: that's not a fair because if I could go out
- 9:01Speaker 5: there and could I cover somebody. I don't even care
- 9:04Speaker 5: if you put me in cover three. I'm gonna tell
- 9:07Speaker 5: you no because I just don't think. I just don't.
- 9:10Speaker 4: I don't see it, and if you do catch it
- 9:12Speaker 4: on me, I ain't trying to tackle you. But I
- 9:15Speaker 4: think with Cam, I think we've seen the example, right,
- 9:17Speaker 4: You've seen athletic quarterback, the athletic quarterback around the cunning
- 9:21Speaker 4: him right. He came back. He had a second stint
- 9:23Speaker 4: with the Minnesota Vikings. He was absolutely brilliant because he
- 9:26Speaker 4: could throw the ball. Michael Vick when he had this
- 9:30Speaker 4: with Philly and he had the stints with the Steelers,
- 9:33Speaker 4: his athletic system went down, but he could slain them
- 9:36Speaker 4: the ball and accurately. Cam can't throw the ball stints
- 9:39Speaker 4: with the Patriots. He just he looked terrible. He literally
- 9:43Speaker 4: doesn't have accuracy. So I don't understand what he's the extra.
- 9:46Speaker 4: He's the extra quote running back in the back of
- 9:51Speaker 4: a phenomenal athlete. Yes he is and good quarterback, but
- 9:54Speaker 4: but there's no way you're gonna convince him to think
- 9:56Speaker 4: he's not one of the greatest quarterbacks playing. I mean,
- 10:00Speaker 4: he was good in his time. But I just you know,
- 10:03Speaker 4: his ability to throw the ball just isn't there. So
- 10:06Speaker 4: nobody's gonna call.
- 10:07Speaker 7: You yeah, And I don't even understand the outrage. Like
- 10:10Speaker 7: I mean, he doesn't have an affiliation with the Colts
- 10:13Speaker 7: like Philip Rivers does. I mean, you know, he knows
- 10:15Speaker 7: the whole system, he knows the playbook. That's part, that's
- 10:18Speaker 7: the biggest part of the reason they bring him because
- 10:21Speaker 7: you know, they're at the edge of they're at the
- 10:23Speaker 7: you know, episcopus of the playoffs. If they can win
- 10:25Speaker 7: a few games and that's all they need, they need
- 10:27Speaker 7: a quarterback in there. They can keep their system going
- 10:30Speaker 7: and you know, hopefully you know, get the running game
- 10:32Speaker 7: taking over some of the plays that he's not able
- 10:35Speaker 7: to achieve in passing.
- 10:37Speaker 4: That's what they need. They need him, and that's true.
- 10:39Speaker 4: Like I said, I wish him the best. I know
- 10:42Speaker 4: those guys on the free agent kiss right now. So,
- 10:45Speaker 4: so you talked about injuries, and we've seen Patrick Mahomes
- 10:50Speaker 4: had the a c L, Michael Parson has the a
- 10:52Speaker 4: c L. There was one of who else somebody else
- 10:55Speaker 4: got it.
- 10:56Speaker 7: DeVante Adams had a groin injury or hamstring but he's
- 11:01Speaker 7: gonna be okay. But but the two most devastating yesterday
- 11:05Speaker 7: we're definitely Patrick Mahomes and and you know, and.
- 11:11Speaker 5: When you start talking about Mahomes and you start talking
- 11:14Speaker 5: about Kansas City, when you start talking about Mahomes out,
- 11:21Speaker 5: I don't I'm trying to figure out, like who is
- 11:24Speaker 5: in it matter?
- 11:27Speaker 6: They're done, They.
- 11:29Speaker 2: Ain't going nowhere, just because I just.
- 11:31Speaker 6: Don't get.
- 11:34Speaker 4: The knocking on there and see and then what and
- 11:37Speaker 4: what and and what bothers me or concerns me is
- 11:42Speaker 4: you know, we had talked earlier.
- 11:44Speaker 5: I think we had mentioned whether we I don't know
- 11:45Speaker 5: if we were on air or off, but but back
- 11:48Speaker 5: somewhere we were talking about Mahomes and even can he
- 11:52Speaker 5: how long can he continue to scramble and get out
- 11:55Speaker 5: of the pocket and do all those kinds of things,
- 11:58Speaker 5: And now you have this is this is this to me,
- 12:04Speaker 5: I think this could be the beginning of or the
- 12:06Speaker 5: change in where he is as far as a pocket guy.
- 12:10Speaker 5: He's either gonna have to become a more of a
- 12:11Speaker 5: pocket guy than he's going to be a running guy.
- 12:14Speaker 2: Because I just don't.
- 12:15Speaker 4: Know what I would say he does that out of necessity,
- 12:18Speaker 4: because they don't think what they're gonna have to do.
- 12:20Speaker 4: They're gonna have to get him a running game, They're
- 12:22Speaker 4: gonna have to continue work the offense line. But I thought,
- 12:24Speaker 4: and again this was prior to the injury, I thought
- 12:27Speaker 4: them not going to the playoffs was actually a good
- 12:29Speaker 4: thing because, I mean, when you come to Patrick Mahomes,
- 12:31Speaker 4: he just plays so much. For over the last five years,
- 12:34Speaker 4: they've literally either won the Super Bowl or been in
- 12:37Speaker 4: the Super Bowl like every single year, and it's a
- 12:40Speaker 4: lot of a lot of Yeah, it's because I thought
- 12:42Speaker 4: them not making the playoffs this year was a good thing.
- 12:45Speaker 4: You could go, you could recruit, you would have a
- 12:47Speaker 4: whole all, you have an entire offseason just to rest
- 12:50Speaker 4: and get your body right. So I think again, this
- 12:54Speaker 4: even with the injury, because he probably won't come back.
- 12:57Speaker 4: You know, acls are different now, so they're back in
- 12:59Speaker 4: six months, but if they're conservative, he might miss a
- 13:02Speaker 4: couple of games going to the season. So I think
- 13:05Speaker 4: this maybe a good time. I think this may be
- 13:07Speaker 4: a good thing for him to rest and reevaluate, and
- 13:09Speaker 4: they're going to have to figure out different ways to
- 13:11Speaker 4: protect him.
- 13:13Speaker 7: Yeah, I just think it's it's so severe though, the
- 13:16Speaker 7: timing of the ACL injuries for both of those players.
- 13:18Speaker 7: And what's wild it was both in their left knee.
- 13:20Speaker 7: Isn't that crazy now? But but Micah's was different. I
- 13:23Speaker 7: actually witnessed that happen and his was non contact.
- 13:26Speaker 2: I mean, he was that's the worst problem.
- 13:29Speaker 6: Yeah, that was that was Yeah, that's not a good sign.
- 13:32Speaker 7: And you know, like you said that, they they they've
- 13:34Speaker 7: come a long way in their treatment of ACL injuries
- 13:37Speaker 7: and how they can but still there's a possibility, depending
- 13:39Speaker 7: on the severity of the injury. You know, they could
- 13:42Speaker 7: miss part of next season as well. I mean, it
- 13:45Speaker 7: just depends on what when they have surgery and what
- 13:46Speaker 7: they get in there and find.
- 13:48Speaker 5: And where does how does that impact you mentally because
- 13:51Speaker 5: you you can't you know, and Hollis you you you're
- 13:54Speaker 5: aware of this. If you have an injury that's keeping
- 13:57Speaker 5: you out and when you come back in and let's
- 13:59Speaker 5: say it's an ankle, let's say it's a knee, let's
- 14:01Speaker 5: say it's an arm. You are a little tender with
- 14:04Speaker 5: that kind of thing, like you, you know, you want
- 14:07Speaker 5: to make sure before you make that first.
- 14:09Speaker 4: I mean, because imagine somebody at some point in time
- 14:12Speaker 4: you got to take the snap stick that leg in
- 14:15Speaker 4: set up to throw the ball.
- 14:17Speaker 2: Man.
- 14:18Speaker 4: These dudes got the best doctors in the world. They
- 14:20Speaker 4: got the best trainers in the world. I think they are.
- 14:25Speaker 2: But I don't know. He'll be fine. I don't know
- 14:27Speaker 2: if the doctor can help me mentally.
- 14:29Speaker 4: I think he'll be like and they got a sports
- 14:31Speaker 4: psychologist for that too, Like literally, they.
- 14:34Speaker 2: Got ever that he will be okay.
- 14:37Speaker 4: And again remember back in the day when you toy
- 14:39Speaker 4: your a C they have to make that big incision,
- 14:40Speaker 4: that big scars. Now it's just like you may not
- 14:43Speaker 4: even see the scar. So like I said, I think
- 14:46Speaker 4: he'll be just fine. And like I said, I think
- 14:48Speaker 4: this would be a good thing at the end of
- 14:50Speaker 4: the day.
- 14:51Speaker 2: So for you, it's it's it's him resting. He needs it.
- 14:54Speaker 4: This is so much football when you're playing again, you
- 14:57Speaker 4: got a seventeen game regular season, then what are you
- 15:00Speaker 4: playing like three, four or five playoff games. You're playing
- 15:03Speaker 4: four playoff games every single year for the last five years.
- 15:07Speaker 4: Not to mention college and what happened there. That's he's
- 15:10Speaker 4: played a lot of football over the last ten years
- 15:12Speaker 4: because he's been successful. And we got to remember the
- 15:15Speaker 4: same thing happened to Brady in the middle of their running. Remember,
- 15:18Speaker 4: he heard his knee. I don't know if he to
- 15:19Speaker 4: a cl but he he had. He had a leg injury,
- 15:22Speaker 4: and then he came back better. He had adjustice his training.
- 15:25Speaker 4: And I think Patrick mahons, because he's such an elite passer,
- 15:29Speaker 4: he'll be able to adjust his game. And I think
- 15:31Speaker 4: you're right, he won't be able to. He's gonna have
- 15:34Speaker 4: to slow down on all the scrambling. They're gonna have
- 15:36Speaker 4: to help. They gotta get pieces around Mahomes. You don't
- 15:40Speaker 4: do that to that level quarterback. You gotta get back
- 15:42Speaker 4: guys around it.
- 15:43Speaker 5: And and and part of that has just been because
- 15:46Speaker 5: as years go by, as as as him playing at
- 15:51Speaker 5: a high level, some of your old linemen are dropping
- 15:56Speaker 5: off and you're kind of holding on.
- 15:58Speaker 2: To that team that's that's taking you there.
- 16:02Speaker 4: But man, hey, that guard might be he may be
- 16:05Speaker 4: too far gone already. You know that tackle may be gone.
- 16:08Speaker 4: I mean, you may have to try to get some
- 16:10Speaker 4: new guys up front if you are going to if
- 16:13Speaker 4: you're going to expect him to be the guy. And
- 16:16Speaker 4: then and didn't.
- 16:17Speaker 7: We say that last year when they lost to the
- 16:19Speaker 7: Eagles that that. You know, he we took some hints
- 16:21Speaker 7: and we said they need to work on that offensive line.
- 16:23Speaker 7: And I think that's still an issue for them, isn't it.
- 16:25Speaker 4: It's in addition to the offensive line, because I'm like,
- 16:29Speaker 4: I think they're they've been adequate, although they've been hurt.
- 16:32Speaker 4: They need a running they need running back, and then
- 16:35Speaker 4: they got to get you right a hand that ball off.
- 16:37Speaker 5: And you know what's funny, no one has really said
- 16:40Speaker 5: that about them because of Mahomes.
- 16:44Speaker 4: Because of Mahomes and because of how he can throw
- 16:46Speaker 4: the ball, how he can scramble and all that. But man,
- 16:48Speaker 4: you gotta have which which also means you have to
- 16:52Speaker 4: have a line that can run block.
- 16:54Speaker 5: But you there's no way you're going to have that
- 16:57Speaker 5: that grade of a quarterback and not have a running back.
- 17:00Speaker 5: I would get that dude full a fullback in running back.
- 17:04Speaker 5: He does he need to bring make fullbacks great again.
- 17:12Speaker 6: Make these little sayings coming up with tonight.
- 17:16Speaker 4: You got to just be able to sometimes just go
- 17:18Speaker 4: down the field and run iceos.
- 17:20Speaker 2: Yeah, people smashes and slams.
- 17:22Speaker 7: Here's the other question then, guys, I mean you mentioned this,
- 17:25Speaker 7: I'll allude to this Hollis seventeen games they play seventeen
- 17:29Speaker 7: before the playoffs you can begin. And there was talk
- 17:32Speaker 7: I think last winter of adding one more game with
- 17:35Speaker 7: these international crew, making the regular season eighteen games before.
- 17:41Speaker 6: The playoffs begin.
- 17:42Speaker 7: So if that's the case, and you know, we know
- 17:45Speaker 7: money drives all of this, and it's a good possibility
- 17:48Speaker 7: they'll do it because of that, do you think these
- 17:50Speaker 7: catastrophic injuries will they'll they'll just increase because the more
- 17:54Speaker 7: games you play, the more likely it is something's going
- 17:57Speaker 7: to happen like this.
- 17:58Speaker 4: Correct, there's no question in your mind, there's no question
- 18:02Speaker 4: that that that's gonna take place.
- 18:03Speaker 5: There's no question that you're gonna get more injuries. And
- 18:06Speaker 5: the problem is with the way the training is.
- 18:10Speaker 4: Now.
- 18:12Speaker 2: You know, the guys.
- 18:13Speaker 5: Are they're stronger, they're faster, they're all of this kind
- 18:16Speaker 5: of stuff.
- 18:17Speaker 4: But the game is harder. The game is faster, the
- 18:20Speaker 4: game is harder. It's all of those kind of things.
- 18:23Speaker 4: And now you're adding games too to these guys who
- 18:29Speaker 4: are I mean, imagine imagine playing in a game today,
- 18:34Speaker 4: like I can't even imagine the speed, the physicality of it,
- 18:39Speaker 4: Like I just I know it's way above where it
- 18:42Speaker 4: used to be right, and now you're and you're gonna
- 18:46Speaker 4: add games on top of that to make them play more.
- 18:50Speaker 6: I mean, think about this, This was week fifteen? Correct?
- 18:53Speaker 6: Was this week fifteen? If I'm not mistaken, I think
- 18:56Speaker 6: it was.
- 18:56Speaker 7: I think we're finishing week fifteen tonight with the Steelers and.
- 19:01Speaker 4: Saying that that out there?
- 19:03Speaker 2: What stillers?
- 19:04Speaker 8: No?
- 19:04Speaker 6: I don't.
- 19:06Speaker 7: And I think they've got two more two more regular
- 19:09Speaker 7: like seventeen games.
- 19:10Speaker 6: They have two more regular season games.
- 19:12Speaker 7: I'm almost certain that's right. Yeah, that blows my mind,
- 19:17Speaker 7: Like the playoffs should start now. It's December, like they've
- 19:21Speaker 7: been playing since August.
- 19:24Speaker 6: That's a long haul.
- 19:26Speaker 5: And you're taking and aren't they backing away from training
- 19:29Speaker 5: camp like that? It's less, it's it's less days, less weeks.
- 19:34Speaker 5: So how does so you're you're you're practicing less and
- 19:39Speaker 5: the game is is bigger, faster, stronger, harder contact and longer.
- 19:46Speaker 4: I just don't come on, But I don't know how
- 19:47Speaker 4: you can with football again. You get her practice too,
- 19:51Speaker 4: i'd I don't know how you supplement the but you're
- 19:55Speaker 4: what you're saying, taking away We're going to take away
- 19:58Speaker 4: practice and on games, which do you think, I mean,
- 20:04Speaker 4: I get hurt. The game is. The game is the
- 20:07Speaker 4: likelihood of where you're really gonna get hurt. There's there's
- 20:09Speaker 4: no question. You can get hurt in practice, no question.
- 20:12Speaker 5: But on the other side of that, you're putting me
- 20:17Speaker 5: through these practices and I'm and I'm sure that there's
- 20:21Speaker 5: some somewhere in the week. There's contact, there's there's goal line,
- 20:27Speaker 5: there's short yardage, there's all that kind of stuff. They
- 20:29Speaker 5: gotta have that kind of stuff that's lied a little bit.
- 20:31Speaker 4: Yeah, you gotta have a little bit of it, and
- 20:33Speaker 4: then you're gonna come right back and now you gotta
- 20:35Speaker 4: go that full.
- 20:37Speaker 2: Game week after week after week after week.
- 20:42Speaker 6: How many buyers do they get just one or two?
- 20:45Speaker 4: I think it's too Yeah, but all that all that
- 20:49Speaker 4: does because well, you you're gonna get me two weeks off.
- 20:53Speaker 2: But in my practicing, yes.
- 20:56Speaker 7: Yeah, maybe not not with the intensity. What it depends
- 20:59Speaker 7: on your end, right, people.
- 21:03Speaker 2: We might start seeing low management in football.
- 21:08Speaker 5: I just I just think somewhere somewhere we I think
- 21:11Speaker 5: we have to we have to stop and say, okay,
- 21:15Speaker 5: let's truly look out for the athlete. Because we're talking
- 21:19Speaker 5: about injuries, we're talking, you know, the league itself. They're
- 21:24Speaker 5: talking about all this, you know, safety, we need to
- 21:30Speaker 5: do this, but come on, we gotta, we gotta.
- 21:34Speaker 4: Actually, safety is not playing, it's not doing something. You
- 21:40Speaker 4: gotta give. You gotta give these guys sometime off.
- 21:44Speaker 5: You say, oh, well, they're off all after the football season,
- 21:49Speaker 5: it's not.
- 21:50Speaker 6: And they're going to train during that time, you know,
- 21:53Speaker 6: to keep in shape.
- 21:54Speaker 4: A lot of guys are staying in the city that
- 21:56Speaker 4: they play in and going to the facility working out every.
- 21:59Speaker 6: Day, and they don't get much of a break.
- 22:01Speaker 2: Now they don't.
- 22:02Speaker 7: I mean you think about the Super Bowls played in February.
- 22:05Speaker 7: I mean then they turn around and they're in summer
- 22:07Speaker 7: practice in what June?
- 22:08Speaker 3: June.
- 22:08Speaker 7: Yes, So I mean that's that's not that long of
- 22:10Speaker 7: a break, especially for a game as physical as football.
- 22:14Speaker 7: I mean it's just I mean the hits that they
- 22:17Speaker 7: have to take weekend, week out, the athleticism it requires,
- 22:22Speaker 7: all of it. I mean, it's just a it's a
- 22:24Speaker 7: very physical game and it's hard on your body.
- 22:27Speaker 6: I would think, and then know that.
- 22:29Speaker 4: Yes, and let's and let's think about it this way.
- 22:32Speaker 4: For all of the things that have changed for the better, Okay,
- 22:37Speaker 4: for all of the things that they're implementing to change
- 22:40Speaker 4: for the better for the player. Here we are still
- 22:45Speaker 4: looking at week after week, injury after injury.
- 22:50Speaker 6: So it's crazy.
- 22:53Speaker 5: Is it effective whatever that is that they're doing, whatever
- 22:56Speaker 5: they're trying to do to make the game safe, are
- 23:01Speaker 5: they doing it well?
- 23:02Speaker 2: Have they have they?
- 23:04Speaker 4: Does it look like, oh, you know what this might work?
- 23:07Speaker 4: You know, is there something out there that might work?
- 23:10Speaker 2: See? To me, I don't see.
- 23:12Speaker 6: I do like I do like the fact that they
- 23:14Speaker 6: have the helmets.
- 23:15Speaker 7: Now it's not required, but I mean, you can wear
- 23:17Speaker 7: the helmets that are protective of concussions.
- 23:20Speaker 2: Why wouldn't you make that well mandatory, wouldn't make that To.
- 23:24Speaker 7: Me, I would think that would be mandatory. But I mean,
- 23:26Speaker 7: I guess the players complain about vision and you know
- 23:29Speaker 7: that they are large.
- 23:31Speaker 6: I've seen, you've seen.
- 23:32Speaker 2: But it can be those can be fixed.
- 23:35Speaker 6: I would think so.
- 23:36Speaker 7: I mean, and if it's something that reduces the number
- 23:38Speaker 7: of concussions, you know, in a season, they probably need
- 23:41Speaker 7: to look at that. I mean, the players that choose
- 23:43Speaker 7: to go that route. See if there's a comparison, you know,
- 23:47Speaker 7: between the numbers of people that don't wear the helmets
- 23:49Speaker 7: versus the people that do.
- 23:51Speaker 6: I mean, there's got to be a way they can
- 23:52Speaker 6: figure that out.
- 23:53Speaker 7: But I mean other than that, well, in the quarterback,
- 23:57Speaker 7: they've kind of put things in place so that the
- 23:59Speaker 7: quarter can't get blind, like you know, Hollis said earlier,
- 24:03Speaker 7: they can't be hit as frequently or as intensely as
- 24:08Speaker 7: they were in the past with the rules and penalties
- 24:10Speaker 7: that they've implemented. But other than that, I don't know
- 24:14Speaker 7: how you do it without changing the foundations of the game.
- 24:18Speaker 6: Well, the game is hitting.
- 24:19Speaker 4: Yes, the game is hitting, and and and to the
- 24:22Speaker 4: to any rule about hitting doesn't impact or doesn't change
- 24:29Speaker 4: the reality of.
- 24:31Speaker 2: A knee injury. A knee injury. You could plant the wrong.
- 24:35Speaker 6: Way, yeah, and that's what happened to my Parsons.
- 24:37Speaker 5: Yes, you can plant the wrong way and unfortunately you
- 24:41Speaker 5: you now you you torn your knee. Yeah, you could
- 24:47Speaker 5: get hit, but once you once we once the concept
- 24:53Speaker 5: of the injury and the amount of time it's going
- 24:56Speaker 5: to take to get back the amount of money you
- 24:59Speaker 5: have vested in that player.
- 25:02Speaker 2: Is it is it? Is it really worth?
- 25:06Speaker 8: Like?
- 25:07Speaker 2: Is it worth? I don't even know how to say it.
- 25:12Speaker 2: I don't like to me.
- 25:13Speaker 4: Like, I don't.
- 25:14Speaker 5: I don't see it being okay that we're not doing
- 25:19Speaker 5: every potential thing possible. Why are these Why are your
- 25:23Speaker 5: cliques sticking yeah into the turf?
- 25:26Speaker 4: Why are we not looking at the shoes? Are we
- 25:28Speaker 4: not looking at you know, whatever, the equipment, everything. You know,
- 25:34Speaker 4: if you're doing this and you're putting this extra piece
- 25:36Speaker 4: on your helmet to keep yourself from getting a concussion,
- 25:40Speaker 4: which is for sure, I would say that the deadliest
- 25:43Speaker 4: piece of it. Why is that you if you think
- 25:47Speaker 4: it helped a little bit? Why is everybody? Why's that
- 25:50Speaker 4: not mandatory?
- 25:51Speaker 7: Like again, I'll go back, Yeah, And you also have
- 25:53Speaker 7: to remember this is a business, and businesses are about money,
- 25:57Speaker 7: and if players complain that they can't compete to peak
- 26:00Speaker 7: performance wearing certain things during the game, it's gonna make
- 26:05Speaker 7: it less entertaining. I mean, I think you know the
- 26:09Speaker 7: part about the helmets. They're allowed, they're they're not mandatory.
- 26:14Speaker 7: They are you know that it's your choice whether to
- 26:16Speaker 7: wear them, and most players choose not to, So there
- 26:20Speaker 7: must be something to that that affects their plays. The
- 26:23Speaker 7: only thing I could figure out, because why would you
- 26:26Speaker 7: not want to wear something that protects you from potential
- 26:29Speaker 7: head injury.
- 26:30Speaker 5: Nobody. It's going to be very difficult for a player
- 26:34Speaker 5: to step forward to.
- 26:35Speaker 2: Do something quote for safety.
- 26:41Speaker 5: As much as I would want to wear wear that,
- 26:44Speaker 5: I would not wear it until somebody else made it
- 26:48Speaker 5: okay to wear.
- 26:51Speaker 2: I don't think.
- 26:52Speaker 6: So do you feel like the coaches, I think have
- 26:54Speaker 6: a problem.
- 26:55Speaker 4: I think it's I think it's a player thing, like
- 26:57Speaker 4: a peer pressure pressure thing, like I'm not gonna wear
- 27:01Speaker 4: that because am I really playing the game if I
- 27:04Speaker 4: got to wear that hat?
- 27:05Speaker 8: You know?
- 27:06Speaker 2: And what am I scared of?
- 27:08Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 27:09Speaker 7: Your future absolutely, and to walk and talk in the future.
- 27:14Speaker 7: I mean, you know that we know what the ramifications
- 27:17Speaker 7: are of too many concussions?
- 27:18Speaker 6: Is CTE?
- 27:19Speaker 2: Yes?
- 27:19Speaker 5: And to me, I would I don't even I can't
- 27:22Speaker 5: even understand why why I do understand why they won't
- 27:26Speaker 5: allow former players to come in and have these conversations
- 27:32Speaker 5: about let's just say a player who is has been
- 27:36Speaker 5: impacted by CTE but it's still you know, still manageable.
- 27:41Speaker 5: Him saying why he believes that that extra piece of
- 27:46Speaker 5: equipment for the helmet would be safe, would be worth
- 27:50Speaker 5: it before you get to so you don't get to
- 27:54Speaker 5: my situation.
- 27:55Speaker 4: I think that makes sense. That would make sense to
- 27:59Speaker 4: the player, right because if they.
- 28:01Speaker 7: See, why wouldn't that happen? I mean, well, I mean
- 28:06Speaker 7: there's got to be a reason. There's always a reason
- 28:08Speaker 7: for everything the NFL does, usually monetary.
- 28:12Speaker 4: We know that there's no reason. I don't think so
- 28:16Speaker 4: they're not they're not. It's not like it's going to
- 28:18Speaker 4: break the budget.
- 28:20Speaker 5: The budget, yeah you know, but why wouldn't you practice
- 28:24Speaker 5: in them? Oh for sure, if nothing else that ought
- 28:27Speaker 5: to be mandatory for practice.
- 28:28Speaker 7: The only thing I can think of, Carl, is just
- 28:31Speaker 7: looking at them that you know that they're they're.
- 28:33Speaker 6: Very big, and they look heavy.
- 28:36Speaker 4: I don't probably not they're not heavy.
- 28:37Speaker 6: They're not heavy. They're heavy, But.
- 28:40Speaker 4: Again, it's the it's the first it's the first look,
- 28:44Speaker 4: the first making of them. So you know how that
- 28:48Speaker 4: you know by the time we could gettline, you know,
- 28:51Speaker 4: they'll get streamlined. But still, if it's going to help me,
- 28:57Speaker 4: if it's going to protect me and going to keep
- 29:01Speaker 4: me from getting to a situation, you know that I feel,
- 29:05Speaker 4: going where I'm heading, I'm all for it.
- 29:09Speaker 7: Yeah, I mean I think they I mean, just from
- 29:13Speaker 7: a fan standpoint, I know what they do, but I
- 29:15Speaker 7: also know what they look like, and I know the
- 29:17Speaker 7: memes that I see on on social media, and they
- 29:19Speaker 7: do the little alien memes, you know with the one
- 29:21Speaker 7: with the big head and Aaron Dobbs I think from
- 29:24Speaker 7: Green Bay wears one here. He wears it every every
- 29:27Speaker 7: single game that that they play.
- 29:30Speaker 5: And he's smart and he's probably one of the smartest
- 29:32Speaker 5: players because he is.
- 29:34Speaker 7: Yeah, I mean, I'm I'm sure of that. I mean,
- 29:35Speaker 7: he plays. It doesn't affect his play, it doesn't seem
- 29:38Speaker 7: to anyway. But I think it's probably something they have
- 29:40Speaker 7: to get used to. I mean, I'm sure that the
- 29:42Speaker 7: whole vision thing, the way that it's it's designed, I'm
- 29:46Speaker 7: sure that it affects, you know, the field vision and the.
- 29:50Speaker 5: Way you It doesn't, but it really doesn't come down
- 29:53Speaker 5: over the over over the face mask.
- 29:56Speaker 6: Have you worn one before?
- 29:57Speaker 4: No, but I've seen him and they come they come
- 30:01Speaker 4: to the top of.
- 30:02Speaker 6: The I'm just curious if you ever tried one on, Like.
- 30:05Speaker 4: No, I haven't tried one on, if you ever.
- 30:07Speaker 6: Get an opportunity to do it, because I want to.
- 30:08Speaker 4: Know, I probably I can probably try to see it
- 30:12Speaker 4: about the high school they have. I'm sure somebody has one,
- 30:17Speaker 4: and so if nothing else, seeing how it fits on
- 30:19Speaker 4: them and where and where the protection actually is.
- 30:24Speaker 2: But it's from what I have seen though, it is
- 30:26Speaker 2: the top of the helmet.
- 30:28Speaker 7: Yeah, I've seen that, but I just because they look
- 30:31Speaker 7: they look awkward. I'm just I'm just gonna most fans
- 30:34Speaker 7: would say.
- 30:34Speaker 2: That, I would think like they would come off.
- 30:39Speaker 6: Yes, maybe, but I've.
- 30:41Speaker 4: Never seen one or heard of anyone coming off, So
- 30:44Speaker 4: I don't know how they I don't know what the
- 30:46Speaker 4: actual what keeps it on.
- 30:50Speaker 2: But I've never seen anybody have a problem with it.
- 30:54Speaker 6: That's something we need to explore.
- 30:55Speaker 7: I mean, yeah, I think I need we need to
- 30:57Speaker 7: look a little deeper into that because I'm like you think,
- 31:00Speaker 7: I think most players, I mean, if if it keeps
- 31:02Speaker 7: your brain safe, I don't I don't know where it's
- 31:06Speaker 7: an it's you know, there's no question about whether to wear.
- 31:09Speaker 5: It or not because what we know, what we know
- 31:13Speaker 5: for a fact is the helmet is not The helmet
- 31:16Speaker 5: is not protecting you by itself. That's that's There's no
- 31:20Speaker 5: there's no if ans and buts about that. The helmet
- 31:23Speaker 5: is not going to protect you from anything. But something
- 31:28Speaker 5: current like a you know, you get knocked out, get
- 31:31Speaker 5: dizzy or whatever, which is it is a start to
- 31:36Speaker 5: a future?
- 31:37Speaker 7: Yeah, sure, I mean that if you want to you
- 31:39Speaker 7: want to protect your players, absolutely, this is something that
- 31:42Speaker 7: you probably need to require. I'm just curious why players
- 31:45Speaker 7: don't wear it. I mean, other than you know that,
- 31:48Speaker 7: there's got to be some reason why you would change.
- 31:50Speaker 2: I think it's not cool, Okay, that really I think.
- 31:54Speaker 7: I mean, Aaron Dobbs does not look cool in that helmet.
- 31:56Speaker 7: I mean, I love him to death.
- 31:59Speaker 6: He's a right player, but he stands out and I'm trying.
- 32:03Speaker 4: That does it come down past the logo?
- 32:07Speaker 2: Yeah? But does it come down past the logo?
- 32:10Speaker 6: I'm to get an image, but I mean I can't remember.
- 32:14Speaker 6: It's just an awkward look.
- 32:16Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 32:16Speaker 6: And again, you're right, you can't be cool in it.
- 32:19Speaker 2: No, there's no.
- 32:21Speaker 4: You can put the towel wherever you want it and
- 32:23Speaker 4: all that kind of stuff.
- 32:24Speaker 2: You got that on your helmet. You're not. Yeah, you're not.
- 32:27Speaker 2: You're you're You're not going to help you.

- 34:00Speaker 3: conversation begin on let's talk.
- 34:02Speaker 4: All right, ladies and gentlemen, we are back, and uh,
- 34:06Speaker 4: at least I think we're gonna we're gonna change top three.
- 34:09Speaker 6: Let's change directions.
- 34:10Speaker 4: Let's do it.
- 34:11Speaker 6: Let's do it.
- 34:12Speaker 7: So let's talk a little bit about the Heisman that
- 34:14Speaker 7: happened over the weekend. So Carl, and I know you
- 34:17Speaker 7: have some strong feelings you you've kind of voiced to
- 34:20Speaker 7: me about the type of players that are usually in
- 34:24Speaker 7: the in the final group, uh to be chosen.
- 34:26Speaker 6: But we'll get to that in a minute.
- 34:29Speaker 7: But right now, I'm holding you back right now because
- 34:32Speaker 7: this is this is a story that kind of developed
- 34:36Speaker 7: during the Heisman and after the Heisman.
- 34:38Speaker 6: Of course, we all know.
- 34:38Speaker 7: That Indiana's Fernando Mendoza he was chosen as the winner,
- 34:44Speaker 7: and rightly, I think most.
- 34:45Speaker 6: People expected that. Did you expect it, Carl? Not really?
- 34:49Speaker 2: Not really? Not really? Okay, well, quarter quarterback.
- 34:54Speaker 7: Well, yeah, he is a quarterback, and he led his
- 34:57Speaker 7: school to the Big ten, uh, you know, champmpionship and
- 35:01Speaker 7: conference game or the championship conference game. He also won
- 35:04Speaker 7: the he said, you know, in the national Championship playoffs.
- 35:07Speaker 7: So I think that's deservedly so. But mister and let
- 35:12Speaker 7: me find his name here, Diego Pavilla.
- 35:18Speaker 6: I think I said it wrong, right, I don't know
- 35:20Speaker 6: if I said it right or wrong.
- 35:21Speaker 2: I've got no chance to help you, all right, uh.
- 35:24Speaker 7: He he didn't seem to think that he was deserving
- 35:26Speaker 7: of it.
- 35:27Speaker 6: The award.
- 35:28Speaker 7: Actually, during the actual ceremony, a lot of people called
- 35:32Speaker 7: his behavior classless. They said he sat there with headphones
- 35:36Speaker 7: on during the whole the whole thing, and he was,
- 35:41Speaker 7: you know, generally exhibiting, they said, arrogant behavior. And then
- 35:46Speaker 7: here's the kicker. After he was so upset. After he
- 35:49Speaker 7: was so upset that I guess because he didn't win
- 35:51Speaker 7: in Fernando won, he decided to take to Instagram and
- 35:56Speaker 7: he he went on this rant and basically said, he
- 36:00Speaker 7: hosted and I'll do the G version for all of
- 36:03Speaker 7: our audience in you f all the voters emoji thumbdown,
- 36:08Speaker 7: thumbs down. That was his message to social media. So
- 36:12Speaker 7: of course people are talking about that. But the part
- 36:15Speaker 7: that I thought you would really like, uh was the
- 36:18Speaker 7: voter ballot oddity. And that was That was when there
- 36:22Speaker 7: was a sports writer who took it upon himself.
- 36:25Speaker 6: His name's Mike Wilson.
- 36:26Speaker 7: Instead of going with the finalists and voting them in
- 36:29Speaker 7: order the way that he saw fit, he did like
- 36:32Speaker 7: a write in and he wrote in Ohio state safety
- 36:36Speaker 7: Caleb Downs as his pick.
- 36:39Speaker 6: Now, I thought you'd like that because it was a safety, Okay.
- 36:41Speaker 7: Because I know what you So, what are your what
- 36:44Speaker 7: are your thoughts about the Heisman every year?
- 36:47Speaker 2: I am so tired of quarterbacks.
- 36:50Speaker 6: I knew it.
- 36:52Speaker 2: I am so tired of quarterbacks winning the Heisman.
- 36:55Speaker 4: M hm.
- 36:58Speaker 2: They have either a receiver that they're throwing it to.
- 37:02Speaker 5: They have they have a line that is blocking for them.
- 37:07Speaker 5: They have a running back who is getting the ball,
- 37:10Speaker 5: you know, or gets the balls every so often often.
- 37:16Speaker 2: That it's it's it's to me.
- 37:20Speaker 5: The hosman should be the quarterback award, sure and leave
- 37:24Speaker 5: it there.
- 37:25Speaker 2: And if you're going to do that, you need to
- 37:27Speaker 2: create an award for.
- 37:31Speaker 4: Every for D line, O line, receivers, d backs, kicker.
- 37:37Speaker 2: Everybody has a quota hosman by position.
- 37:42Speaker 4: Ye, not not the whole line, but a lineman, a receiver,
- 37:47Speaker 4: a running back, a quarterback.
- 37:51Speaker 7: And I understand completely what you're saying. But here, here,
- 37:55Speaker 7: here's here's where we are. Okay, this is this is
- 37:58Speaker 7: college athletics, and this is history, this is tradition. We
- 38:04Speaker 7: all know right now in college football, we're we're grabbing
- 38:06Speaker 7: on to anything in tradition that we can with with
- 38:09Speaker 7: the way the Nils taking over, we we we want
- 38:13Speaker 7: to keep some pageantry and they're not going to do that.
- 38:16Speaker 7: That the heisman is always going to be the houseman,
- 38:18Speaker 7: and more than likely it's going to be a quarterback.
- 38:21Speaker 6: But I understand where you're coming from.
- 38:23Speaker 5: So Okay, here's my here's here's my concern with with
- 38:29Speaker 5: the with the quarterback and it being the quarterback only.
- 38:35Speaker 4: He's protected by five guys right to be able to
- 38:40Speaker 4: throw the ball. Absolutely, he has receivers who are catching
- 38:45Speaker 4: passes and catching touchdowns that go to him as credit.
- 38:54Speaker 2: And because of all of everything that.
- 38:57Speaker 6: He does, yeah, he he.
- 39:00Speaker 2: Has someone on the other end being part of that.
- 39:05Speaker 4: So why can't I be the receiver and he's thrown
- 39:11Speaker 4: me the most balls and I have the most touchdowns
- 39:15Speaker 4: of the team in the conference right in college? Why
- 39:21Speaker 4: am I not part of the selection committee? Like, why
- 39:26Speaker 4: wouldn't my name not be there, but his name's there.
- 39:29Speaker 6: Well.
- 39:29Speaker 7: I mean, I think Ohio State wide receiver Jeremiah Smith
- 39:32Speaker 7: would agree with you, because the quarterback from Ohio State
- 39:35Speaker 7: was actually a finalist than he wasn't and he was
- 39:37Speaker 7: catching the ball for him. So I mean, do you
- 39:39Speaker 7: have a legitimate gripe? Okay, but here's the other side
- 39:42Speaker 7: of it. I do think it's a possibility. And when
- 39:45Speaker 7: we saw Randy Moss, he was a receiver at Marshall,
- 39:48Speaker 7: a small school.
- 39:50Speaker 6: But the problem is the receiver has to work.
- 39:52Speaker 7: Way, way, way, way harder inflated numbers. They have to
- 39:57Speaker 7: really really go above and beyond to be he nominated
- 40:00Speaker 7: compared to a quarterback. Yes, I mean, I think the
- 40:02Speaker 7: quarterback has to work hard, don't get me wrong, But
- 40:05Speaker 7: he's notable. He already has his name out there right
- 40:09Speaker 7: because of who he is. Yes, and you know when
- 40:11Speaker 7: you see the highlights of the college football games, it's
- 40:13Speaker 7: going to be focused on the quarterback. He's the leader
- 40:16Speaker 7: of the offense, you know, the whole offense. But a
- 40:19Speaker 7: receiver really has to do phenomenal things in order to
- 40:24Speaker 7: have a seat on that stage Heisman Night, in my opinion,
- 40:27Speaker 7: because their name's not out there is frequently right.
- 40:30Speaker 5: The change of the game has taken the running back
- 40:33Speaker 5: has taken the tailback out.
- 40:34Speaker 2: Of the game.
- 40:34Speaker 6: Yeh, that's true.
- 40:35Speaker 4: Because now that everybody throws the ball more so than
- 40:40Speaker 4: they run it, the running back guy that's back there
- 40:44Speaker 4: now is never going to have a shot to win
- 40:47Speaker 4: a Heisman.
- 40:49Speaker 2: He can be the best back in the in the country.
- 40:51Speaker 6: Who was the last running back to ever win a Heinsman?
- 40:54Speaker 6: Was there one?
- 40:54Speaker 7: I mean, I'm sure there was somewhere along the line,
- 40:56Speaker 7: but I don't know, I don't remember who.
- 40:58Speaker 4: How does a lineman win that's out?
- 41:01Speaker 2: How does a d lineman has to? Okay, so, yes,
- 41:04Speaker 2: it's always offense.
- 41:06Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 41:06Speaker 4: So the the defensive lineman who has the most sacks
- 41:13Speaker 4: in college football is a first round draft pick, or
- 41:16Speaker 4: it's going to be a first round draft pick. Why
- 41:19Speaker 4: would he not be Why would he not be consideration?
- 41:23Speaker 4: He's he's beat everybody's line and he's leading the country
- 41:29Speaker 4: in sacks. He's going to be a first round pick? Yeah?
- 41:34Speaker 4: Why is he not even in the Why is he
- 41:36Speaker 4: not even in the conversation?
- 41:38Speaker 6: I mean, I'm not I'm not disagreeing with you at all.
- 41:40Speaker 7: I just I just think it's part of the tradition
- 41:43Speaker 7: of the heisman that they focus mostly on quarterbacks. Occasionally
- 41:49Speaker 7: an outstanding running back or an outstanding receiver, but.
- 41:53Speaker 6: Not as frequently as quarterbacks.
- 41:55Speaker 7: Just like I said, it's because their names are out
- 41:57Speaker 7: there and the receiver and the running back have to
- 42:00Speaker 7: work twice as hard as a quarterback to even get
- 42:02Speaker 7: considered for a Housman nomination, and he.
- 42:07Speaker 2: Makes the court and they make the quarterback.
- 42:09Speaker 7: Right, Yeah, absolutely, if you don't have a receiver that
- 42:12Speaker 7: that can catch the ball, you're right.
- 42:14Speaker 6: I mean, they're not putting up the numbers and.
- 42:17Speaker 4: See and then are we agreeing? I think we are.
- 42:21Speaker 6: Write it down here.
- 42:23Speaker 7: I may not get a pink slept tonight.
- 42:28Speaker 2: Oh my gosh, maybe it's over Christmas.
- 42:31Speaker 6: Christmas, it's Christmas spirit.
- 42:34Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 42:34Speaker 4: I just I think you either you either have to
- 42:39Speaker 4: create a a.
- 42:43Speaker 2: An award I don't care whose names.
- 42:46Speaker 5: On it for linemen and an offensive lineman defensive lineman.
- 42:50Speaker 7: I think they do, don't They some type of award,
- 42:53Speaker 7: but it's not literally as.
- 42:55Speaker 4: You have to publicize it as a heisman.
- 42:58Speaker 6: The same type of ceremony and care if.
- 43:00Speaker 4: You say it is it is a hosman who wants
- 43:03Speaker 4: that falls under that umbrella.
- 43:06Speaker 2: Okay, and to me that's only fair, But then it.
- 43:09Speaker 7: Kind of diminishes the actual heisman, and they're not do that.
- 43:13Speaker 4: I don't think that you being the best you be
- 43:16Speaker 4: in the best quarterback doesn't to me. You being the
- 43:19Speaker 4: best quarterback in the league. How does that make you
- 43:25Speaker 4: any better than the best d.
- 43:27Speaker 7: N I say, Okay, I like what you're saying. I
- 43:30Speaker 7: totally agree. But maybe they could take how many there's
- 43:32Speaker 7: like five candidates right for the Heusman that go that
- 43:35Speaker 7: sit on the stage, and they pick from those five,
- 43:37Speaker 7: maybe they make it a point that there can only
- 43:40Speaker 7: be one quarterback, there can only be one wide receiver,
- 43:43Speaker 7: there can only be you know, one running back, one
- 43:46Speaker 7: defensive lineman, whatever, so that you cover most of the
- 43:49Speaker 7: positions that are playing.
- 43:52Speaker 4: I would be I would be fine with that because
- 43:54Speaker 4: that you'd be surprised of the number of people who
- 43:57Speaker 4: might vote for that defensive line miex or both for
- 44:01Speaker 4: that running back or that receiver, so we're offensive linemen.
- 44:04Speaker 7: Instead of having a bunch of awards, which to me
- 44:06Speaker 7: would diminish it, just just make sure that the categories
- 44:11Speaker 7: that you you have to hit all of the different
- 44:14Speaker 7: offensive and defensive positions to award the Heisman to. But
- 44:18Speaker 7: you could look at those quarterbacks, like, let's just like
- 44:21Speaker 7: the other night with Indiana's Fernando Mendoza. They knew he
- 44:25Speaker 7: was going to win over the other quarterbacks, so why
- 44:27Speaker 7: not just nominate him and then nominate four other positions
- 44:31Speaker 7: and pick from from all five. Just kind of like
- 44:33Speaker 7: what that writer did writing in his own person.
- 44:36Speaker 5: Yeah, I would, I would again, I would be okay
- 44:40Speaker 5: with that because to me, you can't okay, And I'm
- 44:45Speaker 5: just gonna go back and I don't even know who
- 44:47Speaker 5: all came out into that in that same era. I'm
- 44:50Speaker 5: gonna make the case Reggie White in college. Yeah, somebody's
- 44:56Speaker 5: gonna tell me that there was a better person to
- 44:59Speaker 5: get the Heisman than him. Now you can make the case,
- 45:03Speaker 5: oh he was better in at the professional level. I
- 45:07Speaker 5: don't know. He was a he was a number one pick.
- 45:09Speaker 5: So I mean you start looking at those those type of.
- 45:13Speaker 4: Guys who came out first round players, who are NFL
- 45:18Speaker 4: Hall of Fame guys who were crazy good in college,
- 45:24Speaker 4: but they can't get that. They can't there's no chance
- 45:27Speaker 4: for them to get the Heisman. Because it's stuck on
- 45:31Speaker 4: the offensive side of the balls of the time.
- 45:34Speaker 6: It is, and that quarterback it's flawed.
- 45:36Speaker 2: It is, it's totally I mean.
- 45:37Speaker 6: But it's tradition and people don't want to give that up.
- 45:40Speaker 7: Like I said, we've given up so much with college
- 45:43Speaker 7: football as far as like the pageantry that the tradition,
- 45:46Speaker 7: you know, with with all of the landscape.
- 45:50Speaker 6: And the wild wild west of.
- 45:51Speaker 7: The ni l and and and the transfer portal, that
- 45:54Speaker 7: people want to hold on to something that has existed
- 45:58Speaker 7: and hasn't changed.
- 45:59Speaker 6: In my opinion, that that's that's part of it.
- 46:01Speaker 4: I see.
- 46:01Speaker 2: But I don't think that.
- 46:03Speaker 5: I don't think that we're changing I don't know if
- 46:05Speaker 5: we're changing the heisman. And again I understand the the
- 46:12Speaker 5: the positional type which is probably too much, but offense
- 46:17Speaker 5: and defense, you know, and again.
- 46:22Speaker 2: You still can't.
- 46:23Speaker 6: You still can't the position of the idea that I
- 46:26Speaker 6: had too much.
- 46:27Speaker 2: No, No, I'm just I'm just saying that they won't go.
- 46:31Speaker 6: That for that, But well, baby steps, maybe that you do.
- 46:34Speaker 4: Well.
- 46:34Speaker 5: I was going to say that's what I was, That's
- 46:36Speaker 5: where I was going to go. I was gonna say, Okay,
- 46:38Speaker 5: so you.
- 46:38Speaker 6: They don't want to go to that they're not going to.
- 46:42Speaker 6: There's only the one. I can only be Yeah, anyway, I.
- 46:45Speaker 5: Can only be so good at corner Okay, yeah, compared
- 46:49Speaker 5: to quarterback, right, like I can I can only knock
- 46:52Speaker 5: down so many molls.
- 46:54Speaker 6: Is you can't?
- 46:55Speaker 2: It is, It's just it's impossible.
- 46:58Speaker 4: There's no position that is more standout than the quarterback position.
- 47:06Speaker 6: Yeah, and that they talk about on Sports Center all
- 47:09Speaker 6: the time.
- 47:09Speaker 7: I mean when when they focus on college game day,
- 47:12Speaker 7: you know that they focus on the quarterbacks.
- 47:14Speaker 2: As soon as they say the school, they go to
- 47:16Speaker 2: the quarterback.
- 47:17Speaker 6: Sure, I mean that's just the way it is. But
- 47:18Speaker 6: that's the way it's always been.
- 47:20Speaker 2: But we know what I mean.
- 47:21Speaker 7: But you're just a better defensive players over there. You
- 47:25Speaker 7: just wish you'd have been nominated for the Heisman when
- 47:27Speaker 7: you were at Marshall.
- 47:28Speaker 6: Well, it's all coming out now.
- 47:30Speaker 2: I am Yes, I am a bitterer. I'm a bitter.
- 47:33Speaker 4: I'm a bitter defensive player. I no, no, but I
- 47:37Speaker 4: am a bitterer. I am a bitter defensive player. Not
- 47:41Speaker 4: not because I feel like I missed anything, but I
- 47:44Speaker 4: think that that defensive.
- 47:47Speaker 6: Players they don't get credit.
- 47:48Speaker 2: They don't get credit.
- 47:49Speaker 6: Agree.
- 47:50Speaker 2: We talked about them.
- 47:51Speaker 5: We talk about them all the way through the game, right,
- 47:54Speaker 5: and then all of a sudden, as soon as the
- 47:56Speaker 5: awards starts showing up, they're lost down. Yeah, yeah, because
- 48:01Speaker 5: it's all because everybody wants a bunch of points. Everybody
- 48:05Speaker 5: wants to dow passes, throw touchdown passes and all those
- 48:10Speaker 5: kinds of things.
- 48:10Speaker 7: That's what people that's what viewers want to see. Yes,
- 48:13Speaker 7: they want the exciting offense. I mean that that's that's
- 48:16Speaker 7: kind of why they watch football. They're defensive games, and
- 48:19Speaker 7: they are to me. I love defensive games. I think
- 48:21Speaker 7: they're fun to watch. But a lot of people, you
- 48:23Speaker 7: know that don't really fundamentally understand it. I think it's
- 48:27Speaker 7: you know, they think it's pooring.
- 48:28Speaker 5: Do you think do you think if there was if
- 48:30Speaker 5: there was a defensive and and and I'm sure there's
- 48:33Speaker 5: like a defensive Player of the Year.
- 48:35Speaker 2: I'm sure there's.
- 48:36Speaker 6: Yeah, there's there's some kind of the same.
- 48:38Speaker 7: There's an award, yeah for sure, but I don't know
- 48:41Speaker 7: what it's, what it's called and.
- 48:42Speaker 4: And and unfortunately everybody knows the Heisman, So why wouldn't
- 48:46Speaker 4: we know a defensive award? Right? You know, it's just it's.
- 48:51Speaker 2: Just not the same.
- 48:53Speaker 4: Because if you're a Heisman winner, you're the best player
- 48:56Speaker 4: in college football, and you could be the best quarter.
- 49:01Speaker 4: But I could take.
- 49:02Speaker 6: A lot of other players that are good at their craft.
- 49:05Speaker 4: I could be I could be the best corner and
- 49:07Speaker 4: and and I might not just be the best corner.
- 49:10Speaker 4: I might be the best corner by a lot. I
- 49:12Speaker 4: might be the best d lineman by a lot. I
- 49:15Speaker 4: might be the best old line.
- 49:17Speaker 2: By a lot. And it's like nobody else.
- 49:21Speaker 5: I have to assume in Reggie White's year coming out
- 49:23Speaker 5: of college, he had to be the most outstanding player
- 49:27Speaker 5: as a defensive lineman ever.
- 49:30Speaker 4: You know, And how does you know?
- 49:34Speaker 6: Wasn't he called the Minister of Defense?
- 49:36Speaker 3: Yes?
- 49:36Speaker 4: Yeah? And how do you know?
- 49:40Speaker 2: How do you not?
- 49:41Speaker 4: How do you not get those kind of guys? How
- 49:44Speaker 4: do those guys not get national awards? Where are the
- 49:50Speaker 4: national awards for? But for the for for college football?
- 49:55Speaker 4: That I think, Yeah, I don't think you can do one.
- 50:00Speaker 4: You can't really do one. And if you do do
- 50:02Speaker 4: some other ones they're not notable.
- 50:05Speaker 6: Well, I think if.
- 50:06Speaker 7: Enough people like this, this this college football writer, like
- 50:10Speaker 7: I spoke of earlier, Mike Wilson kind.
- 50:12Speaker 6: Of shows his.
- 50:14Speaker 7: Dislike of it and kind of writes in his own people,
- 50:18Speaker 7: you know, on the ballots. You know, maybe things will change,
- 50:22Speaker 7: people will look at it and pay attention. You know,
- 50:24Speaker 7: he did put down a safety so that that's in
- 50:27Speaker 7: your favor, yes, you know.
- 50:28Speaker 6: I mean that's a defensive player.
- 50:29Speaker 7: And maybe that was his way of saying, hey, we
- 50:31Speaker 7: need to give these defensive guys a look just as
- 50:33Speaker 7: much as we do the offense.
- 50:35Speaker 6: Absolutely, and it's only fair. It's only fair.
- 50:37Speaker 4: Yeah, it's and because you as soon as you start
- 50:41Speaker 4: the season, who are we talking about all the quarterbacks?
- 50:44Speaker 6: Well, and they've already kind of got the person.
- 50:47Speaker 7: Like really and truthfully, if the Heisman committee had had
- 50:50Speaker 7: what they wanted, you know who, they would have had
- 50:53Speaker 7: the manning, Yes, boy, and that that was the one.
- 50:56Speaker 6: What's his first name?
- 50:57Speaker 4: It slipped my mind.
- 50:58Speaker 6: I should know it.
- 51:00Speaker 7: It'll come to me in a minute. But that's really
- 51:02Speaker 7: who they had. That was the chosen one, and it
- 51:05Speaker 7: didn't happen the way. He didn't follow the script, wasn't
- 51:09Speaker 7: followed the way.
- 51:09Speaker 6: It should have been.
- 51:11Speaker 2: And what how many years does he have left?
- 51:15Speaker 6: I don't know?
- 51:18Speaker 4: Two?
- 51:20Speaker 5: Okay, Well, do you think he will go through college
- 51:24Speaker 5: football without without the possibility of getting that award.
- 51:30Speaker 7: I mean, I think his dad would probably be more
- 51:33Speaker 7: disappointed than he would be. You know, he's he's being
- 51:37Speaker 7: paid well, and I don't think he's I don't think
- 51:40Speaker 7: he's hurting for attention put it that way.
- 51:43Speaker 5: No, but I think that I do think the heisman, Oh,
- 51:47Speaker 5: it's it's it's something that I think if I'm a
- 51:51Speaker 5: quarterback that I'm I'm thinking that I'm out there to
- 51:54Speaker 5: get you know, I'm trying to go get this.
- 51:56Speaker 6: Arch arch Manny. How did I not remember that? Okay,
- 51:59Speaker 6: so he.
- 52:00Speaker 2: Is I played with Archie. I guess the grand dad,
- 52:05Speaker 2: I guess yeah, yeah.
- 52:06Speaker 6: Yeah, yeah. Let's see, he's not going to the NFL.
- 52:10Speaker 7: He's returning to the University of Texas for the twenty
- 52:12Speaker 7: twenty six season.
- 52:14Speaker 6: I think, so maybe next.
- 52:16Speaker 7: Year, if he has a better year, he'll get it,
- 52:18Speaker 7: you know, but he's expected to be a top prospect
- 52:20Speaker 7: for the twenty twenty seven draft, so he still has
- 52:24Speaker 7: another year of eligibility and he's gonna play it out,
- 52:27Speaker 7: which he should.
- 52:28Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 52:28Speaker 7: I mean yeah, Now, if he'd ha had a better
- 52:30Speaker 7: year this year, that might have been a different story
- 52:32Speaker 7: whether he stays and.
- 52:33Speaker 5: I'm not I'm not you know, I'm not one hundred
- 52:36Speaker 5: percent sure that he is he he's going to be
- 52:41Speaker 5: as good as the Mannings have been.
- 52:45Speaker 7: I mean, toward the end of the season, his game
- 52:47Speaker 7: got it improved. It definitely improved with Tom. But I'm
- 52:51Speaker 7: not sure. I'm like you, I'm not sure if he's
- 52:53Speaker 7: at that level that the other Mannings have achieved.
- 52:57Speaker 4: They've been, you know, I mean, yeah, they have been great.
- 53:01Speaker 5: And and if if he if he is that, then
- 53:07Speaker 5: that is a that is an amazing family tree.
- 53:10Speaker 4: Oh my gosh of quarterbacks.
- 53:12Speaker 7: Yeah, I mean, do you ever watch the Man and
- 53:16Speaker 7: Brothers when they do their broadcast, like on I think
- 53:18Speaker 7: it's Monday night, maybe Monday Night Football. Fact that they'll
- 53:21Speaker 7: probably be on tonight. They're hilarious. You should check it
- 53:24Speaker 7: out if you get tired of the game, if the
- 53:26Speaker 7: game gets out of hand.
- 53:27Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 53:28Speaker 2: Well, the funny thing is, like Archie was the dad.
- 53:33Speaker 4: He he played a year with US in Minnesota. He
- 53:37Speaker 4: was always like he was like never like like I.
- 53:42Speaker 2: Would say serious, like, he was always like is.
- 53:45Speaker 6: That where they get their sense of h Yeah, I
- 53:47Speaker 6: guess because he.
- 53:48Speaker 5: Was always kind of like just just cool, just laughing,
- 53:52Speaker 5: smiling and no pressure, like like he didn't carry any
- 53:58Speaker 5: pressure because I think we quarterbacks got hurt.
- 54:02Speaker 2: He got into the game and like he like he
- 54:04Speaker 2: went in like.
- 54:05Speaker 5: It was just just okay, yeah, this is my time,
- 54:09Speaker 5: I'll do what I gotta do and for all into
- 54:12Speaker 5: the purposes.
- 54:12Speaker 2: He did a great job for what.
- 54:16Speaker 4: His role was.
- 54:17Speaker 2: Yeah, and again that's just a crazy family.
- 54:22Speaker 4: That's like I don't even know how that talent.
- 54:25Speaker 7: Is just Yeah, and and they're just they're just so
- 54:29Speaker 7: witty and are just you know, they're they're just they're
- 54:33Speaker 7: funny to watch.
- 54:34Speaker 4: Well, I think we've covered every I think we got
- 54:37Speaker 4: about everything out.
- 54:40Speaker 2: Well, I'm not sure.
