- 0:01Hey everybody, welcome back to the Elon Musk Podcast.
- 0:05This is a show where we discuss the critical crossroads that
- 0:08shape SpaceX, Tesla X, The Boring Company, and Neuralink,
- 0:13and I'm your host, Will Walden. SpaceX has announced its
- 0:17intentions to carry out as many as 9 Starship missions in the
- 0:21next year, with spacecrafts expected to land all the way in
- 0:24the Indian Ocean. These operations, which are set
- 0:27to be launched from the Boca Chica Starbase, Texas site, are
- 0:31detailed in an extensive environmental assessment by the
- 0:34Federal Aviation Administration or the FAA.
- 0:36Now the FAA's report, which is 119 pages long, indicates the
- 0:41possibility of up to five total losses of the starships which
- 0:45would occur as they crash into the ocean at the highest speed
- 0:48possible after re entering from orbit while still intact.
- 0:53Of course, now these incidents termed over pressure events in
- 0:57the document would be caused by the impact with water leading
- 1:00the structural compromise and subsequent combustion of the
- 1:04liquid methane and oxygen on board.
- 1:06In addition to these potential explosive landings, SpaceX is
- 1:10also looking into the viability of controlled water landings,
- 1:14wherein the spacecraft would softly approach the water
- 1:16surface before tipping over as described by the FAA document.
- 1:21Now, the FAA report points out that the starship's propellants,
- 1:25liquid methane and oxygen, are not toxic, unlike some other
- 1:28rocket fuels, which is an important consideration for
- 1:31environmental safety. Now, the document also
- 1:34acknowledges the chance the starships might break apart
- 1:37during the RE entry process, adding another potential outcome
- 1:39to these planned missions. Now SpaceX moves forward with
- 1:42these plans and continues to receive the necessary
- 1:45authorizations from the FAA. A large number of starships,
- 1:48either whole or in pieces, will likely end up on the ocean floor
- 1:52in a region between Australia and Madagascar.
- 1:56Now, the FAA's environmental assessment details what could be
- 1:59expected if Starship landings in the Indian Ocean do not go as
- 2:03planned, predicting a field of debris primarily made-up of
- 2:07heavy metals and some composite materials now.
- 2:10The majority of this debris, especially the stainless steel
- 2:13components, is expected to sink quickly due to its heavy nature
- 2:17and material composition. However, some lighter pieces
- 2:20might float or remain suspended before eventually sinking.
- 2:25Now, in case of explosion upon impact, the resulting debris is
- 2:29expected to be contained within a radius of about .5 nautical
- 2:33miles from the point of impact, and the FAA has stated there
- 2:37will be no attempts to retrieve or clean up the Starship
- 2:39remains, whatever their condition after landing in
- 2:43pieces or not. And the report also considers
- 2:45the potential impact of these operations on marine life such
- 2:49as sea turtles, fish, sharks, whales and others in the
- 2:54intended landing zones. Now the FA as assessment
- 2:57suggests that the direct impact on marine life from either
- 3:00impact or breaking apart starships is highly unlikely,
- 3:04thanks to the Ocean's vastness and the relatively small size of
- 3:07the spacecraft components compared to, well, millions of
- 3:11tons of water, and also they have to hit tiny fish, so it's
- 3:16very unlikely. Now it's reasoned that although
- 3:19debris hitting an animal underwater could cause harm or
- 3:22death, the low frequency of Starship operations and the
- 3:26natural underwater behavior of marine life makes such
- 3:29occurrences highly unlikely. And on March 14th, 2024, a large
- 3:35crowd gathered to watch a Starship launch from Spacex's
- 3:38Boca CHIC facility. Marking an important moment for
- 3:41this company, this launch was particularly notable.
- 3:45As well known to be the most powerful rocket in existence, it
- 3:48successfully reached orbit, a significant achievement for
- 3:52SpaceX and everybody in the spaceflight community.
- 3:57Now these developments and the planned future missions show
- 4:00that SpaceX is working towards fully operational and fully
- 4:06reusable large scale massive rockets that can take massive,
- 4:11massive payloads the low Earth orbit to the moon, Mars and
