- 0:27Hey everybody, good morning from the chicken coop.
- 0:31Today we are talking about being a non judgmental observer.
- 0:36Wow, doesn't that like sounds so great in theory Anyway, being a
- 0:42non judgmental observer, of all the things that I may ask you to
- 0:46do over the time we spend together here, this may be the
- 0:51most difficult one. Being the non judgmental
- 0:54observer, probably the hardest thing I've ever had to work on
- 0:59in my life. Don't say I never will come out
- 1:01and say that I've got it conquered because I don't.
- 1:04Because I do have those moments where I lose my cool and it is
- 1:09always the me jumping to an emotional conclusion and making
- 1:15a judgement and then of course having a reaction to it.
- 1:19I can tell you right now if you and my husband will listen to
- 1:21this later and we will laugh about it.
- 1:23But it's true. The stove is one of my places
- 1:27where I have a very hard time being a non judgmental observer
- 1:31or love when my husband cooks. But watching him flip eggs and
- 1:36add spices, he is like a French chef in the kitchen and there's
- 1:40always stuff flying. And for me, the obsessively
- 1:43clean girl, it is like, Oh no, the stove.
- 1:47And I instantaneously have a reaction.
- 1:50And to this day I have to work on it.
- 1:52And I laugh about it because I think it's like it's just God's
- 1:54joke with me about how it reminds me that this is all work
- 1:58we have to do constantly. If I had it mastered and it
- 2:02didn't bother me, then clearly I would not remember that I was
- 2:05human and I might get a little full of myself.
- 2:08But he reminds me every day and I love that.
- 2:12So non judgmental observers, what does this mean?
- 2:14Means you can see something happen and you can instead of
- 2:18coming to a conclusion instantaneously, you can pause
- 2:21and you can pull yourself out of it and just say, this is
- 2:24interesting. Let me stop.
- 2:27Let me think about this now. I'm excellent at this with my
- 2:30clients. My clients can call and they can
- 2:33tell me anything. And believe me, they tell me
- 2:35some very interesting things, but I can't judge it.
- 2:38I have to just meet them where they are and I have to hear them
- 2:42out so that I can help them. Because if I decide to go
- 2:45emotional, I'm not going to get them anywhere.
- 2:48I'm going to end up messing things up because in my emotion,
- 2:51I'm not going to think clearly. Because when remember, I will
- 2:53say this, often when emotions go up, intelligence goes down.
- 2:57Yes, hear that When emotions go up, intelligence goes down.
- 3:01And that works positively and negatively.
- 3:04So it's important to remember being the non non judgmental
- 3:08observer is critically important to your success in anything.
- 3:13Because if you are not in a state of already coming to a
- 3:17conclusion, you can actually formulate a much better vision
- 3:23of the entire situation. You get a clearer picture of the
- 3:27situation before you can give ideas or have a way to solve it.
- 3:31So you have to think of this in terms of the value is in you
- 3:36being able to 1, not get your buttons pushed, but two, just
- 3:40telling yourself I'm a non judgmental observer right now,
- 3:44adding an extra seat on your bus, so to speak, in our
- 3:48emotional bus when we have that, I have my non judgmental
- 3:51observer and she's just doesn't have opinions clearly.
- 3:56She's just there to see what it's all about.
- 3:59Take it all in, think it through.
- 4:02I once remember General Schwarzkopf, for those of you
- 4:05who remember who he was, had a comment during the speaking
- 4:09engagement and he said the smartest person in the room is
- 4:13often the person who speaks last.
- 4:15And I always thought about that because he was such a powerful
- 4:19person in so many realms of the world, but he was also someone
- 4:23that so many people liked. And, you know, again, that's
- 4:28because he would observe everybody else and then he would
- 4:31come to conclusions again, back to that non judgmental observer
- 4:35mode. And I think that when we go to
- 4:37that place and we say, OK, I'm going to formulate my opinions,
- 4:42yes, I will have an opinion. But if I do it from the place of
- 4:45already having the opinion going into it, I'm at a disadvantage.
- 4:50If I pause myself, if I pull myself out, if I can get into
- 4:54that place of neutral, non judgmental observation, then I
- 4:57can come to a conclusion that is much more likely to serve me
- 5:01because I can see all the avenues around it.
- 5:04I can't stress to you guys enough how important this aspect
- 5:08is because one of the things that it does for you is it gives
- 5:11you the ability to see around you what's really happening
- 5:16instead of just from your point of view.
- 5:18You know, let's go back to my kitchen example.
- 5:21My husband loves to cook for us, for the family.
- 5:24I mean, that's one of his things that he actually gets so much
- 5:27joy out of his cooking. And so when he's doing it, he's
- 5:30not thinking about the mess he's making.
- 5:33I think about the mess. He thinks about the fact that
- 5:36he's lucky he's able to cook for his family.
- 5:39He loves doing that. He loves to have people try the
- 5:42food and say, wow, this is amazing.
- 5:44So he's pouring love into this and I'm looking at it from a
- 5:47different point of view Now, when I am not managing my state,
- 5:50when I'm not managing my insane cleaning girl and she's sitting
- 5:56at the front of the bus freaking out, that's what I see.
- 5:58But when I am in my non judgmental observer, I can see
- 6:02how much fun he's having and I don't want to rob him of the
- 6:05fun. So I'm going to tell you today,
- 6:07I want you guys to go out and try to cultivate your non
- 6:10judgmental observers and see how that takes you, see where that
- 6:14takes you, and I hope you have a very, very blessed day.
