- 0:00Art is defined by the expression or application of human creative
- 0:05skill and imagination, typically in a visual form such as a
- 0:10painting or sculpture, producing works to be appreciated
- 0:14primarily for their beauty or emotional power.
- 0:18Art takes time and effort, sometimes sweat tears and blood
- 0:24literally. But his art reflects emotional
- 0:27power in whatever branch it decides to express itself.
- 0:31Could it capture with it a piece of the human soul?
- 0:35When a man inherits a strange painting from his grandmother,
- 0:39bizarre happenings begin to manifest within his home.
- 0:43Can he decipher the paranormal mystery surrounding it before
- 0:47it's too late? This is the untold story of the
- 0:50anguished man painting of Cumbria, England.
- 0:54And this particular story, like the painting itself, is an
- 0:59unsettling 1. Cumbria, England, a beautiful
- 1:17place known for breathtaking scenery, has over the years
- 1:21become known as a creative hub for the arts, culture and
- 1:26literature, also being home to many of the artists themselves.
- 1:31But underneath this natural beauty lies something dark and
- 1:36foreboding. As art reflects beauty, it must
- 1:40also reflect the abhorrent. The information of some of the
- 1:46experiences are vague, however. I will try to tell the story as
- 1:51complete as I can, given what I could find.
- 1:55Our story begins in Cumbria, approximately around 2010.
- 2:00A man named Sean Robinson has just inherited a painting from
- 2:05his grandmother, but unlike lots of other works of art, this one
- 2:10is grotesque, almost terrifying, and certainly makes one ponder
- 2:16the sanity of the person who made it, although no one knows
- 2:20for certain how it came into Robinson's grandmother's
- 2:24possession originally. The painting had apparently been
- 2:28within the family for 30 years by this point, but had been in
- 2:32the attic of his grandmother's house for 25 of those years.
- 2:37She had said she had put it there because there was
- 2:40something evil about it. Within the five years the
- 2:44painting was visibly present within her home, numerous
- 2:47bizarre things began to occur. The legend, as it goes, is that
- 2:53the man who painted it had used his own blood within the
- 2:56painting itself, mixing it with the oils drip by drip, allowing
- 3:02his essence to become infused with the canvas.
- 3:07Although the time frame of its production is unknown, the
- 3:10artist behind it apparently would end by his own hand after
- 3:15finishing his masterpiece. Upon possessing this painting,
- 3:19known as the Anguished Man, Robinson's grandmother would
- 3:23soon begin to have experiences that she couldn't explain.
- 3:27She began to see the dark, an ominous figure of a man
- 3:31throughout her house, sometimes out of the corner of her eye and
- 3:36other times directly in front of her.
- 3:39This had to have been absolutely terrifying.
- 3:43I'm not entirely sure of her living arrangement, if her
- 3:46husband was still alive or not, but for speculation's sake,
- 3:51imagine being older and living alone, and then starting to see
- 3:55the spectral man wandering throughout your home, seemingly
- 3:59stalking you from the shadows. It's certainly more than enough
- 4:04to fuel your nightmares. This would prompt her to
- 4:07eventually move the painting into the attic, possibly out of
- 4:11fears to what would happen if she got rid of it.
- 4:15As far as we know, given the information that is available,
- 4:19these apparitions cease to be once the painting was stowed
- 4:22away from the rest of the house, isolated to its own devices
- 4:28within the confines of the attic above.
- 4:32Years later, although he had been forewarned by his
- 4:35grandmother, Robinson wasn't convinced of the supposed evil
- 4:39that inhabited this strange work of art.
- 4:42He himself, being a lifelong horror fan upon receiving it,
- 4:47was intrigued and decided to take it home.
- 4:51After placing it within the walls of his house, he too would
- 4:55soon begin to experience terrifying events that he
- 4:59couldn't explain. The painting would be sat on
- 5:02display in an upstairs bedroom, and upon finding its new home,
- 5:07the painting, known as the Anguished Man, began to invoke
- 5:11something evil. As it often does, the activity
- 5:15started small. The day the painting was placed
- 5:19in the house, creaking in footsteps began to be heard and
- 5:24would only continue from there on out.
- 5:27These creaks and footsteps grew ever louder and more aggressive
- 5:31and were soon coupled with tormented, almost muffled
- 5:35screams that would echo all throughout the house.
- 5:39The Robinson family soon began to see a pitch black figure
- 5:43wandering throughout their home, a murky, dark presence, an ever
- 5:49present set of eyes burning a hole to their very souls.
- 5:54These episodes disturbed Robinson, who had recalled that
- 5:58his grandmother had said that she experienced the very same
- 6:02phenomenon. In the coming months, the family
- 6:05would also begin to experience other hair raising activity as
- 6:09well. Soon banging could be heard all
- 6:12throughout the house at odd hours of the day and night, with
- 6:17the activity seeming to peak between 3:00 and 4:00 AM, with
- 6:22the previously mentioned phenomena.
- 6:25A new and mysterious deep crying noise could also be heard ever
- 6:31more frequently and with no rational origin.
- 6:36As time would pass, the haunting force would continue to only
- 6:40grow stronger. The manifestation of the Shadow
- 6:44Man would continue to be seen and along with being seen, but
- 6:49also be observed crying and whispering, although despite
- 6:54hearing the whispers, the family could never decipher what he or
- 6:59it was trying to say. Alongside these bizarre and
- 7:03creepy happenings, A horrific visual would soon be seen by
- 7:08Sean Robinson's very own eyes. He would find himself suddenly
- 7:13awake between the hours of three and 4:00 AM, when activity would
- 7:18typically reach a fever pitch. Only this night was different as
- 7:23his eyes adjusted. He sees, standing at the foot of
- 7:27his bed, a dark figure whose face appears to be red, and upon
- 7:33a closer look Shawn is frozen with fear.
- 7:36What he was seeing before his very eyes, totally lucid, was
- 7:40the very same figure from the painting.
- 7:44But before Shawn could allow himself to scream, the figure
- 7:49simply vanished. Not only would this have been
- 7:52absolutely bone chilling to experience, but with the
- 7:56activity continuing to escalate, Sean wondered what could be
- 8:00next. Was the apparition perhaps an
- 8:03omen of things to come, whether it was the paranormal force or
- 8:08entity that inhabited the painting or something else
- 8:12within the Robinson home? Although the home was not
- 8:15reported to have been haunted whatsoever prior to Sean
- 8:19receiving the anguished man, the entity persisted.
- 8:24One night as the moon hung overhead.
- 8:27Sean Robinson found himself awake early in the morning as he
- 8:32went down the stairs and into the kitchen, presumably to get
- 8:36himself a drink or a snack to wake up, as most people often
- 8:41do, he would be suddenly startled by a bloodcurdling
- 8:45scream coming from his upstairs master bedroom.
- 8:49He recognized the scream. It was his wife.
- 8:53Robinson's wife would be woken up out of the sound sleep by
- 8:57having her hair played with and tugged on upon feeling for the
- 9:01origin in the darkness and rolling over.
- 9:05She was met face to face with a man that she described as being
- 9:11massive, having a sunken in mouth and eyes, and his
- 9:16breathing was absolutely horrific.
- 9:20This experience must have shocked and terrified the poor
- 9:23woman. Perhaps she was thinking it was
- 9:25her husband laying next to her, except instead of experiencing A
- 9:29reassuring face staring back at hers when looking over after
- 9:34regaining consciousness, she sees something straight out of a
- 9:37horror movie looking at her instead.
- 9:41This morning certainly must have been a hectic 1, because how
- 9:44does 1 console their wife after an experience like that?
- 9:48How does one fight something that shouldn't exist, coexisting
- 9:54with the paranormal force that now inhabited their home?
- 9:57The Robinson family did their best to try and live normal
- 10:00lives, but the activity only ever seemed to get worse.
- 10:05However, one day when Robinson's son Keenan was pushed down the
- 10:10stairs by something that he couldn't see, Sean had had
- 10:14enough, unsure of what would happen if he did away with the
- 10:17painting by discarding it. Who remembered how his
- 10:21grandmother had dealt with it with her own unique situation
- 10:24surrounding the painting, and decided to, at least for the
- 10:27time being, place it in the cellar of his home, away from
- 10:32his family. The activity itself, although
- 10:35still somewhat present, certainly seemed to calm down
- 10:39quite a bit. Following this move in the years
- 10:42to come, Sean Robinson would begin to document the haunting
- 10:46surrounding the anguished man. This documentation began within
- 10:50several months of receiving the painting, after he and his
- 10:53family went from skeptics to believers after experiencing A
- 10:58plethora of strangeness ever since the anguished man arrived
- 11:03in their lives. As of right now, there are about
- 11:0616 videos documenting various supernatural occurrences within
- 11:10the Robinson home surrounding the object.
- 11:14These manifestations include apparitions, flashing lights and
- 11:19eerie fogs enveloping the room the painting sits in, doors
- 11:23opening and closing by themselves and various objects
- 11:28including the painting itself moving on their own.
- 11:32More recently, it seems like a UK based paranormal group has
- 11:36assisted Robinson with investigating what could be
- 11:39taking place at his home. Seems like they have also
- 11:42captured several Evp's or Electronic Voice Phenomena as
- 11:47part of those investigation sessions.
- 11:50I will be linking Sean Robinson's YouTube channel below
- 11:53so you can go see for yourself if you wish to do so.
- 11:57And before we conclude this odd story, first let us speculate as
- 12:01to what could be happening starting from the beginning.
- 12:05Sean's grandmother came into possession of the painting, but
- 12:09how did she receive it? Did she purchase it or was it a
- 12:13gift? And if so, from who?
- 12:17With these questions, we are only left with more.
- 12:20Just how could she or anyone have become aware of the
- 12:23supposed back story of how the painting came to be?
- 12:27If the artist is unknown? Perhaps the person who sold it
- 12:31or gifted it to her knew them but kept them unnamed.
- 12:36Perhaps they painted under a pen name and upon their death their
- 12:40true identity was lost. It's hard to say upon her
- 12:44initial experiences of seeing the apparition of a large man
- 12:48wandering throughout her home and crying out.
- 12:52I'm curious if she saw any sort of religious or paranormal help.
- 12:57I'm also curious if she lived alone at the time, her with her
- 13:00husband, but regardless of her living situation.
- 13:05Those would be terrifying things to see and deal with, but in my
- 13:09opinion they would be made so much worse if you were alone,
- 13:13let alone by yourself and elderly.
- 13:16And it seems like paranormal forces such as these, the ones
- 13:19that are perceived to be evil, tend to feed off of human fear
- 13:24like an energy source. These manifestations would lead
- 13:28her to Vanquish the painting into her attic after having it
- 13:32on display for five years for the next 25 years.
- 13:36I wonder why she didn't get rid of it though.
- 13:39Did she fear it would come back, or that the activity would
- 13:43somehow be worse? And with the painting being in
- 13:46the attic, I wonder if anyone went up there and experienced
- 13:50anything, or if she ever heard any noises coming from the attic
- 13:53itself. Because as far as we know, the
- 13:56activity ceased once it was placed there.
- 13:59But that's only a conclusion drawn with very limited
- 14:02information. Once Sean had received the
- 14:05anguished man and placed it on display within his home, he too
- 14:09began to experience the same exact things that his
- 14:13grandmother had, and more. But from the sounds of it, at a
- 14:18minimum he and his wife and children experienced the bizarre
- 14:22phenomena. But I'm also curious if any
- 14:25guests who visited, if they experienced anything that
- 14:28perhaps we just haven't had the chance to hear about.
- 14:32And yet another question just why would someone want to
- 14:35display something so hideous in their house?
- 14:38I mean, the mere side of this painting gives me an eerie vibe.
- 14:42It's dark, soulless eyes and muted screams of terror upon its
- 14:47red face are more than enough for me.
- 14:50I can almost imagine this thing stalking me from the shadows and
- 14:54sneaking up on me with a horrific sound emanating from
- 14:58its face as it smothers me or something.
- 15:02But besides provoking the imagination in a positive or
- 15:05negative manner, if I woke up and saw the anguished man in the
- 15:09flesh from the painting, that would be it for me.
- 15:13I would absolutely seek some kind of assistance and or burned
- 15:16the thing. It's hard to say exactly what
- 15:19one should or would do given the situation until they find
- 15:23themselves experiencing it. But I have to say the Robinson
- 15:27family's experiences sound absolutely terror inducing.
- 15:32There are many theories as to what the entity could be or what
- 15:36the activity could be caused by. It seems like the majority of
- 15:40researchers of this case, myself now included, believe the
- 15:44haunting to be an intelligent one, meaning that an entity can
- 15:48communicate with the living and even physically attack.
- 15:52But others seem to think that the entity isn't stowed away
- 15:55within the painting, but rather that the painting is a conduit
- 15:59itself, Something that opens a portal between our realm or
- 16:03dimension to another. One that allows in this strange
- 16:08and menacing presence. Could perhaps the insanity,
- 16:12blood infusion and ultimate sacrifice of the artist that
- 16:16allegedly painted it upon achieving its final form have
- 16:20something to do with this? Was it an intentional decision
- 16:24or goal on behalf of the artist? It's hard to say, and as many
- 16:30people have, I do also have to ask, is the case genuine?
- 16:34Although Sean Robinson seems like he enjoys a good horror
- 16:37movie, as most of us do, I would say he doesn't give me vibes of
- 16:41a charlatan or anything of the sort.
- 16:44Personally. Some people have accused him of
- 16:47making the entire thing up, but I'd have to follow up with the
- 16:50question of why. I highly doubt he's profited
- 16:54very much from the story anyways, especially judging from
- 16:57his YouTube numbers, and that is in no way, shape or form a dig
- 17:00of any kind. If anything, to me it just backs
- 17:04up the validity of his intentions.
- 17:07He seems more pressed on sharing he and his family's experiences
- 17:11in order to seek other people's opinions as to what could be
- 17:14taking place surrounding the painting.
- 17:17More recently, as previously mentioned, it seems like he's
- 17:20perhaps now had some paranormal assistance from a professional
- 17:24group who can maybe give him some more insight as to what
- 17:27could be happening. But what do you think?
- 17:30Answer one of my many post questions below in the comments
- 17:34or feel free to share your own thoughts.
- 17:36I'd love to read them. As for the Robinson family as a
- 17:40whole, I hope that they eventually find answers
- 17:42surrounding the mysterious oddity known as the Anguished
- 17:46Man. And the rest of us better pray
- 17:49that we don't come into possession of such an item.
- 17:52Because if we did, perhaps the sunken and face of the creature
- 17:56on the canvas will be stalking you and flesh and bone a
- 18:01manifestation of your fear, watching and waiting to take you
- 18:07back home with it wherever that home may be in the darkness.
