- 0:00Speaker 1: How many times do people come to us and, you know,
- 0:02Speaker 1: you got all these gospels and they don't all say
- 0:04Speaker 1: the exact same thing and they don't have everything in
- 0:07Speaker 1: the exact same order and da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da. And we go into
- 0:10Speaker 1: all these kind of convulsions. Again, Bad Bodhi just likes that.
- 0:21Speaker 1: I got to like hold him back because he really does.
- 0:25Speaker 1: He says, yeah, you got different gospels because you got
- 0:27Speaker 1: different people writing to different audiences. And when you speak
- 0:30Speaker 1: to different audiences who have different understandings, you communicate different things.
- 0:35Speaker 1: For example, Matthew is communicating to a Jewish audience. And
- 0:39Speaker 1: when Matthew communicates to this Jewish audience, he communicates that
- 0:43Speaker 1: Jesus is faithful Israel. How does he do that? Well,
- 0:48Speaker 1: if you just go backwards and look on the left
- 0:49Speaker 1: side of the book, God creates man and man sins.
- 0:54Speaker 1: And when man sins, God brings judgment, but he also
- 0:57Speaker 1: brings hope. He brings hope in Genesis chapter three and
- 1:00Speaker 1: verse 15. I will put enmity between you and the
- 1:02Speaker 1: woman and between your seed and her seed. He will
- 1:06Speaker 1: bruise your head, you will bruise his heel. So there
- 1:08Speaker 1: is one who is going to come from the woman
- 1:10Speaker 1: who is going to crush the head of the snake.
- 1:12Speaker 1: This is going to be dealt with. That's the thesis
- 1:15Speaker 1: statement of the rest of redemptive history. For the rest
- 1:17Speaker 1: of redemptive history, we are looking for the seed of
- 1:20Speaker 1: the woman who will crush the head of the snake
- 1:22Speaker 1: or the faithful witness. And there are many in that line,
- 1:26Speaker 1: but ultimately they all fall short. We go through that
- 1:31Speaker 1: line and eventually we get to these people who become
- 1:35Speaker 1: Israelites and Abraham and Isaac and Jacob and these 12
- 1:38Speaker 1: tribes who eventually go into Egypt. Interestingly enough, Matthew begins
- 1:47Speaker 1: his gospel with what? Genealogy. Why? Tracing Jesus as the
- 1:56Speaker 1: promised seed. Well, then after you identify him as the
- 2:03Speaker 1: promised seed, what happens? Well, what happened to Israel? Pharaoh
- 2:10Speaker 1: wanted to kill all the male children and they had
- 2:13Speaker 1: to be protected. while they're in Egypt. Herod wants to
- 2:18Speaker 1: kill all the male children and Jesus goes to the
- 2:21Speaker 1: same Egypt to be protected there. Not only is he
- 2:26Speaker 1: the promised seed, but he's the protected seed. Eventually he
- 2:30Speaker 1: comes out and then he goes through baptism. Where? In
- 2:32Speaker 1: the Jordan, same place Israel had to go through before
- 2:35Speaker 1: they came into the land of promise. He goes into
- 2:39Speaker 1: the wilderness, kind of like Israel went into the wilderness.
- 2:44Speaker 1: They were there for 40 years. He's tempted there for
- 2:46Speaker 1: 40 days. Now while he's tempted, he's tempted in three
- 2:51Speaker 1: very specific ways. Lust of the eyes, lust of the flesh,
- 2:54Speaker 1: and the boastful pride of life. The exact same three
- 2:57Speaker 1: things that led the first Adam to eat the fruit.
- 2:59Speaker 1: But the last Adam is the faithful Adam, not like
- 3:03Speaker 1: first Adam. He's the faithful witness. Then he goes up
- 3:06Speaker 1: onto a mountain and starts teaching. Kind of like Moses teaching.
- 3:12Speaker 1: And he says, you have heard it said, but I
- 3:15Speaker 1: say unto you. After he teaches for a few chapters,
- 3:19Speaker 1: he comes down and starts healing and casting out demons.
- 3:26Speaker 1: Kind of like the conquest. Eventually, he goes to the
- 3:32Speaker 1: cross as Isaiah's suffering servant. And then raises from the dead.
- 3:41Speaker 1: In other words... Israel became a people, but they were unfaithful.
- 3:48Speaker 1: They had a law, and the law couldn't save them.
- 3:52Speaker 1: They had judges. Judges couldn't save them. Eventually, they got kings,
- 3:58Speaker 1: and the kings were unfaithful and couldn't save them. Eventually
- 4:01Speaker 1: came prophets, and eventually they were taken away from their land.
- 4:07Speaker 1: Christ comes as the faithful witness, the prophet, priest, and
- 4:11Speaker 1: king who is faithful and where Israel was not faithful.
- 4:17Speaker 1: He is the last Adam. He is the promised seed.
- 4:21Speaker 1: He is faithful Israel. He is the faithful witness. This
- 4:26Speaker 1: is who our Jesus is. He is connected to all
- 4:31Speaker 1: of redemptive history and even going forward. He is the
- 4:36Speaker 1: faithful witness who will vindicate those who die at the
- 4:40Speaker 1: hands of the unholy trinity. Not only is he the
- 4:46Speaker 1: faithful witness, but he's the faithful witness. He's the firstborn
- 4:50Speaker 1: from the dead. I love that. He's the firstborn from
- 4:56Speaker 1: the dead. Doesn't say he was the only one resurrected
- 5:01Speaker 1: from the dead. Says he was the firstborn from the dead,
- 5:04Speaker 1: which means that there are going to be others resurrected
- 5:06Speaker 1: after him. Amen. So Jesus doesn't just conquer death. But
- 5:12Speaker 1: Jesus conquers death on behalf of all of those who
- 5:15Speaker 1: are in him so that we have hope that we
- 5:18Speaker 1: will conquer death as well. This is of great significance.
- 5:24Speaker 1: So again, what does the world want to say? What
- 5:26Speaker 1: does liberalism want to say? Liberalism wants to say the
- 5:29Speaker 1: resurrection may be true, it may not. It really doesn't matter. Why?
- 5:34Speaker 1: Because ultimately we just need Jesus for his moral example. No,
- 5:38Speaker 1: we don't. We need one who can conquer death and
- 5:44Speaker 1: the grave. And that's precisely what Christ has done. Because
- 5:48Speaker 1: death is the last enemy. We will all face this
- 5:51Speaker 1: last enemy. And Christ is the one who has been
- 5:54Speaker 1: victorious over this last enemy.
