- 0:22SPEAKER_00: People write for many reasons.
- 0:24SPEAKER_00: Some do it for money, others do it for fame, and still others do it to teach or inspire.
- 0:30SPEAKER_00: No matter why you write, there's a common element that ties all writers together.
- 0:35SPEAKER_00: We're all on a journey of discovery.
- 0:37SPEAKER_00: We don't just write to express what we think, we also write in order to discover what we think.
- 0:43SPEAKER_00: For many writers, it goes even deeper than that.
- 0:46SPEAKER_00: It's an itch that they keep on having to scratch, but the itch never quite seems to go away.
- 0:52SPEAKER_00: This itch is what we call a life theme.
- 0:55SPEAKER_00: It's a vision, a statement, or an idea that ties your body of work together.
- 1:00SPEAKER_00: Now, this isn't true for all writers, but I think for most writers it is.
- 1:04SPEAKER_00: We write because there's a singular theme that resonates from our soul.
- 1:09SPEAKER_00: You might call it a golden thread that ties everything together.
- 1:13SPEAKER_00: This was true of Maya Angelou.
- 1:15SPEAKER_00: She said, In all my work, what I try to say is that as human beings, we are more alike than we are unalike.
- 1:24SPEAKER_00: That was her golden thread.
- 1:26SPEAKER_00: Is there a theme or an idea that you keep coming back to?
- 1:30SPEAKER_00: Maybe it's something you're trying to say, but you never quite feel that you get it right?
- 1:34SPEAKER_00: That feeling of not quite getting it right is not an indication that you're inadequate.
- 1:39SPEAKER_00: It's a sign that you still have more to say.
- 1:42SPEAKER_00: So don't be afraid of your golden thread.
- 1:45SPEAKER_00: In fact, lean into it.
- 1:47SPEAKER_00: The more you do, the more your writing will resonate with people because it represents the truth of who you are and how you see the world.
- 1:55SPEAKER_00: And if you've been true to your golden thread, someday you'll be able to look back on your body of work and see how that golden thread has been woven into a stunning tapestry.
- 2:06SPEAKER_00: Thanks for listening, and I'll see you tomorrow.
