- 0:28Hey everybody, good morning from the chicken coop.
- 0:31So often we hear people tell us, put your phone down, be present
- 0:35with me and it's great advice. I mean, I think I can tell you
- 0:41my phone is with me all the time because of my job.
- 0:43What I do, I record the podcast from the phone.
- 0:46It's a tool for me. But when someone says to you,
- 0:50you know, hey, put your phone down and be present with me.
- 0:53What are they really saying to you?
- 0:55They're they're asking for your attention.
- 0:57It's not just about putting the phone down, It's about giving
- 1:00them your attention and really looking at what do I need to do
- 1:03in order to give this person my attention?
- 1:07So best advice that I can give you on this is that everybody is
- 1:12different. Everybody has different rules
- 1:14for how they feel like they're being made.
- 1:18Special and and that's really what they're asking for.
- 1:20They're saying, hey, you need to pay attention to me so that I
- 1:24feel special. I want to feel valued.
- 1:26I want to feel as though you know as I am here in your life.
- 1:30You are looking at me and you're saying I matter.
- 1:34The one thing that I know for sure is that people want to
- 1:36know. They matter.
- 1:38They want to know that what they're doing in your life
- 1:42matters. They want to know that they have
- 1:44a a certain. Huge part of your life and
- 1:52importance in your life. It is 1000% about getting that
- 1:57piece and it's not about the phone.
- 2:01It's about knowing it could be a book.
- 2:03When I was a kid, my mother used to tell me constantly get your
- 2:07nose out of that book because I was always reading and I was
- 2:10reading because I love to read. But she took that.
- 2:13As you know, I'm not paying attention because I'm reading or
- 2:17I I'm working on. You know, I would sit there and
- 2:21painting doing something else and she'd be like talking to me
- 2:24and you're not paying attention to me.
- 2:25It wasn't the IT wasn't the phone.
- 2:27The phone, yes. Is has an addictive personality
- 2:30to it, but the reality. Was I wasn't making her feel
- 2:33valued. And when you can kind of pull
- 2:36yourself back from the offense of someone calling you out on
- 2:40something and you can actually look at it and say okay one
- 2:43second here. The problem is, this person
- 2:46doesn't think I am giving them attention or I'm not being
- 2:51attentive to their needs, or I'm not making them feel as though
- 2:57what they're talking about has any interest to me.
- 3:00It it all comes back to, you know, am I seen?
- 3:03Am I heard? Am I noticed?
- 3:05And if there's one thing that I know for sure, it's that we all
- 3:09want to be seen, we all want to be heard, we all want to be
- 3:12noticed. And we all want to know we
- 3:15matter. And if we don't feel that we
- 3:17matter, we will do things that are.
- 3:21Not necessarily. Things that we're proud of to
- 3:24get that attention. And we might act out and we
- 3:27might say things and we might do hurtful things because we just
- 3:30feel completely and totally overwhelmed by the fact that I
- 3:33don't know how to get your attention.
- 3:35I don't know what else to do. I feel like crap and I just want
- 3:37someone to pay attention to me. And that might be you and it
- 3:40might be someone in your office and it might be a family member,
- 3:43I mean. You know, even right down to the
- 3:45dog, I one of my dogs has this very my big dog as a matter of
- 3:49fact, has this habit of taking his his paw.
- 3:53And he will actually hit me with it over and over if he thinks
- 3:55I'm not paying attention to him because he wants attention and
- 3:59he wants to know he has my attention.
- 4:01So he'll start and he'll start tapping me, tapping me, tapping
- 4:04me, tapping me. And it's annoying.
- 4:06But guess what he gets, He gets me to break my pattern and he
- 4:10shows me I'm not giving him the proper attention.
- 4:13So today. This is all about understanding.
- 4:16Short, sweet, right? To the point of knowing what
- 4:20does this person need from me? It's not about the phone.
- 4:24I don't need to lament this and keep going on.
- 4:26But that's what you need to ask yourself.
- 4:28So go do it. Remember, it's not about the
- 4:31phone. It's about am I giving them what
- 4:32they need? I hope you guys have a blessed
- 4:35day and I will see you all tomorrow.
- 4:38Bye.
