- 0:11Speaker 1: This is the Patriots Catch twenty two podcasts with Evan
- 0:14Speaker 1: Lazar and Alex Barth. Everybody Nailed It, joined us always
- 0:20Speaker 1: by Alex Barth. Here is Evan Lazar and Alex Barth. So
- 0:28Speaker 1: this is.
- 0:28Speaker 2: A very long email from Robert, very well thought out. Robert. I,
- 0:32Speaker 2: I apologize that I can't read.
- 0:33Speaker 1: The whole email.
- 0:34Speaker 2: So the summarization of this email is about a concept
- 0:38Speaker 2: that you and I have kicked around many times on
- 0:40Speaker 2: the show, about an NFL developmental lead. But we have
- 0:44Speaker 2: this concept nailed, so we're available. We will come in
- 0:48Speaker 2: and we will tell you. We will lay you, lay
- 0:50Speaker 2: it out for you and tell you exactly how this
- 0:53Speaker 2: can be done. We are the sickos that on a
- 0:57Speaker 2: random day in March when the Spring League is going on,
- 1:00Speaker 2: the two of us have this nails like, we know
- 1:02Speaker 2: exactly what needs to be done, we know exactly how
- 1:05Speaker 2: to get there. Maybe we need some suits, some lawyers
- 1:08Speaker 2: to come in and help us, like figure out the
- 1:09Speaker 2: injury settlements and all that good stuff. So we have
- 1:12Speaker 2: this concept nailed, so we're available. Hello, everybody, We're we
- 1:18Speaker 2: are always available always. Evan Lazarre and Alex bart Patriots
- 1:22Speaker 2: Catch twenty two. Here with you for the next couple
- 1:25Speaker 2: of hours. Alex behind the glass as well. It's Alex,
- 1:27Speaker 2: Alex and Evan. Were all too many alex Is around
- 1:31Speaker 2: me right now. I need to have nicknames or something.
- 1:33Speaker 2: But let's get Alex Francs going here. Oh yeah, we
- 1:37Speaker 2: can have an Alex off. Who's the best Alex that
- 1:41Speaker 2: is connected to Patriots dot com? Not all of you know,
- 1:45Speaker 2: all the way for some of us over there, but connected. Anyways,
- 1:50Speaker 2: we are going to get into Patriots OTAs. On Monday,
- 1:53Speaker 2: we were out at OTAs, so we'll discuss Drake may
- 1:57Speaker 2: Stefan Diggs being at Patriots practice. I also want to
- 2:01Speaker 2: touch on after we do the OTA observations, I want
- 2:04Speaker 2: to touch on David Andrews retirement ceremony, which we were
- 2:06Speaker 2: both at, which I thought was just a really awesome event,
- 2:11Speaker 2: awesome forty five minutes or so there celebrating the career
- 2:15Speaker 2: of David Andrews. But I want to start with OTAs,
- 2:17Speaker 2: and I know that's what everybody's really on their minds.
- 2:21Speaker 2: We're going to get the digs and how he looked
- 2:23Speaker 2: at practice yesterday, but the place I want to start
- 2:26Speaker 2: was what I thought was Drake May's best practice of
- 2:29Speaker 2: the spring. And I understand that that kind of sounds crazy,
- 2:33Speaker 2: like we're grading every single practice in spring. Can I
- 2:38Speaker 2: get if you sit here and say, relax, right, it's May,
- 2:43Speaker 2: it's June. How much does this stuff really matter? But
- 2:48Speaker 2: just looking at it through what we saw out there
- 2:51Speaker 2: on Monday, Alex I felt like Drake looked the most
- 2:54Speaker 2: comfortable that he has in the three practices that we've seen,
- 2:58Speaker 2: and we started to see some of those high level
- 3:02Speaker 2: throws that we saw from him last year on a
- 3:05Speaker 2: couple of plays, and then he had a real run
- 3:08Speaker 2: of eight or nine completions in a row at one
- 3:11Speaker 2: point where he looked really sharp throughout team drills. So
- 3:15Speaker 2: we started the show in the last two weeks about
- 3:18Speaker 2: maybe a learning curve or or some developmental things going
- 3:22Speaker 2: on with Drake May in this offense. I thought it
- 3:24Speaker 2: was only fair to start with the fact that he
- 3:26Speaker 2: had a good practice the other day and showed some
- 3:29Speaker 2: signs of progress within the framework of this system.
- 3:32Speaker 1: Yeah, and this is where you know it's tough because
- 3:34Speaker 1: it's not linear. It'll be linear from here on out.
- 3:37Speaker 1: We'll see three mini caamp practices next week and then
- 3:40Speaker 1: it's on a training camp at the end of July,
- 3:41Speaker 1: so they won't practice again without us there to some
- 3:44Speaker 1: extent for the rest of the season. Yeah, but you know,
- 3:47Speaker 1: it's tough to say, yeah, he's making progress, he's building
- 3:50Speaker 1: towards something, just because you know, we didn't see what
- 3:53Speaker 1: happened in between the practices they've had one. They had
- 3:57Speaker 1: one since then. I think again today right as their
- 3:59Speaker 1: last ota. Yeah, they had one yesterday and today. I
- 4:02Speaker 1: might be tomorrow. I don't think they have three days
- 4:03Speaker 1: in a row. Okay, they might be tomorrow then, but
- 4:05Speaker 1: like they'll have one more. So you know, it's it.
- 4:09Speaker 1: You can't say definitively like he's moving training in the
- 4:13Speaker 1: right direction, but in front of us, he's training in
- 4:14Speaker 1: the right direction. Yeah, and that's what you want to
- 4:16Speaker 1: see this time of year. It's just about progress, it's
- 4:18Speaker 1: just about getting better. And again, I can't say for
- 4:21Speaker 1: sure yesterday was his best practice of the spring in total,
- 4:24Speaker 1: because we haven't seen all of them. It'd be hard
- 4:26Speaker 1: to imagine he did better than that. That's exactly what
- 4:29Speaker 1: you wanted to look like in the spring. They were
- 4:30Speaker 1: moving to smooth operation in and out of the huddle,
- 4:33Speaker 1: no wasted time at the line of scrimmage, ball's not
- 4:35Speaker 1: hitting the ground smooth, smooth and comfortable, is the best
- 4:39Speaker 1: way I could put it.
- 4:39Speaker 2: Yeah, I think there's always when with all these practices,
- 4:43Speaker 2: we're watching the practice, but we're not hearing the practice,
- 4:47Speaker 2: and we don't know the practice script. So there's always
- 4:49Speaker 2: questions in my back of my mind that I try
- 4:51Speaker 2: to keep in mind about. We don't know what's being
- 4:56Speaker 2: coached right. We don't know if they're in the middle
- 4:59Speaker 2: of a period where they're doing a lot of you know,
- 5:03Speaker 2: short yardage third down stuff and that's why the ball
- 5:05Speaker 2: is not getting pushed down the field, or they're telling
- 5:08Speaker 2: the defense, hey, let's let's stay off the quarterback here
- 5:11Speaker 2: in terms of the pass rush, and let's tone it
- 5:13Speaker 2: down a bit so that we can get some true
- 5:15Speaker 2: passing in here without the effect of him having to
- 5:20Speaker 2: you know, take a sack or what have you. So
- 5:23Speaker 2: you never know any of those types of context is
- 5:25Speaker 2: but a couple.
- 5:26Speaker 1: The interesting thing yesterday was Josh McDaniels told us they
- 5:29Speaker 1: were going to be running some stuff they hadn't done before,
- 5:31Speaker 1: so we know there was at least and I think
- 5:33Speaker 1: that's a lot of spring practices, so maybe it's not
- 5:35Speaker 1: that big of a deal, but like that element was
- 5:38Speaker 1: in play.
- 5:38Speaker 2: So I made that point yesterday on Unfiltered, and I
- 5:41Speaker 2: think it's it's also another piece of context to this.
- 5:45Speaker 2: When you practice against the same defense over and over again,
- 5:49Speaker 2: and both sides are practicing right now, they're basic installation,
- 5:53Speaker 2: like they're foundation of their offense and defensive schemes and systems.
- 5:58Speaker 2: So when you practice week in and week out and
- 6:01Speaker 2: you're now on practice number six, seven, eight nine of
- 6:05Speaker 2: OTAs and things like that, when you have veteran players
- 6:08Speaker 2: and good players on the defensive side, they start to
- 6:11Speaker 2: recognize plays and they start to kind of cheat plays
- 6:14Speaker 2: a little bit. I thought last week when we were
- 6:16Speaker 2: out at practice that Robert Splaine just was all over
- 6:19Speaker 2: several plays that they were running, and it dawned on
- 6:22Speaker 2: me and I thought, maybe, Okay, he might just he's
- 6:25Speaker 2: a really good processor and a really good play diagnoser,
- 6:29Speaker 2: so maybe he just has seen this play run like
- 6:32Speaker 2: six times already and he's like, all right, you're not
- 6:34Speaker 2: gonna get me this time on this. So the element
- 6:37Speaker 2: of Josh McDaniel's telling us before practice that he was
- 6:41Speaker 2: going to call some plays they haven't run yet in practice.
- 6:44Speaker 2: Was not lost on me because maybe that uncertainty, you know,
- 6:48Speaker 2: kind of put a little bit of doubt in the
- 6:50Speaker 2: defense right where the defense didn't know exactly what was coming,
- 6:53Speaker 2: like they might have been prior practices. So that's a
- 6:55Speaker 2: factor of it too, But just in an individual throw basis,
- 6:58Speaker 2: what I thought was most I guess encouraging about Drake
- 7:03Speaker 2: May was that when Drake May is at his best,
- 7:08Speaker 2: he's just ripping it right. There's not a lot of
- 7:10Speaker 2: thought that's going into his throws. There's not a lot
- 7:13Speaker 2: of hesitation. You know, Greg Bdard talks a lot about
- 7:15Speaker 2: the hitch or you know, the kind of double pump
- 7:17Speaker 2: if you will, Like, you don't see any of that.
- 7:20Speaker 2: You just see him playing free, playing loose and letting
- 7:23Speaker 2: it rip. And then also on top of that, you
- 7:26Speaker 2: see a lot of the extra quarterback stuff like coverage manipulation,
- 7:31Speaker 2: you know, pumping the safety off or moving somebody with
- 7:34Speaker 2: his eyes, or throwing off platform obviously you know, extending
- 7:38Speaker 2: the play, throwing off platform. And I thought a couple
- 7:41Speaker 2: of the throws that were really stand out throws to
- 7:45Speaker 2: me had all of those elements and that's when I
- 7:47Speaker 2: know that Drake May's feeling it like, that's when he's
- 7:49Speaker 2: in the groove. So the whole shot to Kishan Boudi
- 7:53Speaker 2: on the corner route right, that's he eats up cover
- 7:57Speaker 2: two and they play that coverage and you have the
- 7:59Speaker 2: split safeties in the corner underneath. He's gonna pump off
- 8:03Speaker 2: the corner underneath and then he's gonna rip.
- 8:05Speaker 1: The whole shot.
- 8:05Speaker 2: And he did that exact thing to Kishan Boudi on
- 8:08Speaker 2: that play, and I said, you know that that the rhythm,
- 8:11Speaker 2: the timing, even the manipulation, like all that is Drake
- 8:15Speaker 2: May when he's at his best, when he's the most comfortable.
- 8:18Speaker 2: The wheel route to Hermandra Stevenson, little off platform, you move
- 8:22Speaker 2: to the left, drop down the arm, angle a little bit,
- 8:25Speaker 2: and just rip it like that. Those are the types
- 8:27Speaker 2: of plays that you see him make that you you
- 8:30Speaker 2: really are excited about in terms of his future in
- 8:33Speaker 2: this league. So those were the couple that stood out
- 8:36Speaker 2: to me as sort of like the highlight plays of
- 8:38Speaker 2: the day for him. But all those throws again or
- 8:42Speaker 2: getting back to this playmaker mode of Drake May and
- 8:47Speaker 2: what he's able to do from the pocket and manipulating
- 8:51Speaker 2: coverage and moving coverage with his eyes or pump fakes
- 8:54Speaker 2: or body language, and you know, being able to throw
- 8:57Speaker 2: off platform and make plays off platform. That's what the
- 9:01Speaker 2: Patriots have when he is at his best. And so
- 9:05Speaker 2: that was very encouraging to see. And I have another
- 9:07Speaker 2: thought on that, But what were some of the things
- 9:10Speaker 2: that stood out to you just specifically about his day.
- 9:13Speaker 1: Yeah, again, I'll go back to what I said before.
- 9:15Speaker 1: I just think he looked more comfortable. Right. We talked
- 9:18Speaker 1: in the last show about just a little hesitation, you know,
- 9:21Speaker 1: was he totally comfortable with what he was looking at
- 9:24Speaker 1: and all that, And this just felt more picking up
- 9:28Speaker 1: where he left off. It didn't feel that's what was
- 9:31Speaker 1: so surprising about McDaniels. For practicing, they're running some new things,
- 9:34Speaker 1: none of that felt new. Yeah, you know, if McDaniels
- 9:36Speaker 1: hadn't say that said that, I might be sitting here saying, well,
- 9:39Speaker 1: you know, it helped out for Drake May that it
- 9:41Speaker 1: seemed like they were doing a lot of stuff he
- 9:42Speaker 1: was comfortable with because he looked and you know, maybe
- 9:44Speaker 1: he's comfortable with the new stuff, but he looked very
- 9:46Speaker 1: comfortable with all of it. So I just think is
- 9:49Speaker 1: he we know, he's more of a like that that
- 9:54Speaker 1: Josh Allen type. Right, He's just gonna kind of see
- 9:56Speaker 1: and go. He's not somebody that's going to compute all
- 9:58Speaker 1: the different things and it's just sort of read and
- 10:01Speaker 1: react to it. And I think he was more in
- 10:04Speaker 1: that mode in playing more free and was more of
- 10:08Speaker 1: that had more that gunslinger mentality as much you can
- 10:10Speaker 1: have in a spring practice. Granted, I think he was
- 10:13Speaker 1: playing more with that mentality, which he's in his comfort
- 10:16Speaker 1: zone when he's doing that, which is good. This was
- 10:18Speaker 1: part of the worry about Josh McDaniel's offense and people
- 10:21Speaker 1: worrying with the Brady offense, right, are they going to
- 10:23Speaker 1: tailor it too much to that and take away some
- 10:26Speaker 1: of what Drake may does. Well, this was him being
- 10:29Speaker 1: able to do what he wants to do, what he
- 10:31Speaker 1: does best in the context of that offense.
- 10:33Speaker 2: So I think that's an important point of all this.
- 10:35Speaker 2: And there was a lot of talk before practice with
- 10:37Speaker 2: the assistant coaches and then you know that carried into
- 10:40Speaker 2: practice about these new wrinkles that the Patriots are supposedly
- 10:44Speaker 2: adding into this offense. And it should be said that
- 10:48Speaker 2: this is the foundation of this scheme is still the
- 10:51Speaker 2: Josh McDaniels playbook, right, that is the roots of the
- 10:54Speaker 2: of the offense. But they have a lot of they
- 10:57Speaker 2: have a melting pot. They really have a melting pot
- 10:59Speaker 2: of coaches that have been in different systems and have
- 11:01Speaker 2: been in different places that they can pull from and
- 11:04Speaker 2: pull ideas from. I think chief among them being Thomas Brown,
- 11:07Speaker 2: who's got that pass game coordinator title as well as
- 11:10Speaker 2: being the tight ends coach, and he comes from Sean
- 11:13Speaker 2: mcvay's tree. He also coached under Frank Reich as well,
- 11:16Speaker 2: who's West Coast oriented. Different branches of the West Coast offense,
- 11:20Speaker 2: and I was really curious to see as we get
- 11:23Speaker 2: into the season, like which fork did they go down,
- 11:27Speaker 2: Like which path did they go down within the West
- 11:29Speaker 2: Coast tree, Because you have the West Coast offense going
- 11:32Speaker 2: all the way back to like Bill Walsh in the
- 11:34Speaker 2: forty nine ers in the eighties. But then you have
- 11:36Speaker 2: like the traditional West Coast coaches, which is what Alex
- 11:39Speaker 2: van Pelt was part of, you know, Mike Holmgre and
- 11:41Speaker 2: Alex van Pelt, Mike McCarthy, those types of guys. Then
- 11:45Speaker 2: you have the Shanahan tree of the West Coast offense.
- 11:49Speaker 2: You know, Kyle Shanahan, Mike Shanahan of course at the top,
- 11:52Speaker 2: Kyle Shanahan, Sean McVay, Mike McDaniel, all those guys, anybody
- 11:58Speaker 2: I've yelled about life. Yeah, and you have the Andy
- 12:02Speaker 2: Reid iteration of this offense, which has really been called
- 12:06Speaker 2: you know, Michael Lombardi always calls it like West Coast College, Right,
- 12:09Speaker 2: it's really a a more air it's adaptive of the
- 12:12Speaker 2: air raid and in the West Coast offense kind of
- 12:15Speaker 2: coming together to fit the quarterbacks of today. And Frank
- 12:18Speaker 2: Reich is obviously offshot on that Andy Reid tree. So
- 12:22Speaker 2: all these guys are connected in that they speak similar languages,
- 12:26Speaker 2: and they have similar core philosophies of how they want
- 12:29Speaker 2: to move the football. But they all have a little
- 12:32Speaker 2: bit of twist on all of their versions. And you
- 12:34Speaker 2: know there's North Turner two, which is a whole Kevin
- 12:36Speaker 2: O'Connell and whatever.
- 12:38Speaker 1: So like the Kevin O'Connell wan the best.
- 12:40Speaker 2: Yeah, So the Kevin O'Connell one is a similar I
- 12:43Speaker 2: would say to the Shanahan tree. I think there's a
- 12:45Speaker 2: lot of similarities. But what I'm getting at is is
- 12:48Speaker 2: the the West Coast College the West Coast you know,
- 12:52Speaker 2: mash with the air Raid is, in my opinion, where
- 12:56Speaker 2: I would rather see them go with Drake May which
- 12:59Speaker 2: is what you know, Patrick Mahomes is obviously running in
- 13:02Speaker 2: Kansas City. They're running a version of it in Philadelphia
- 13:05Speaker 2: with Jalen Hurts, and that The main reasons are one,
- 13:09Speaker 2: it does a nice job of using the quarterback's mobility
- 13:13Speaker 2: to leverage the defense. So whether it's RPOs you know,
- 13:17Speaker 2: read options in the case of Philadelphia, and just in general,
- 13:21Speaker 2: just using the quarterback as a guy that you have
- 13:24Speaker 2: to account for. The Other reason why I really liked
- 13:26Speaker 2: that part of the tree for Drake specifically is that
- 13:31Speaker 2: it's predominantly shotgun.
- 13:33Speaker 1: And I didn't break down.
- 13:36Speaker 2: His plays on Monday based off of under center verus
- 13:38Speaker 2: shotgun splits. I didn't get that into it, but last
- 13:42Speaker 2: year as a rookie, there is no doubt that there
- 13:44Speaker 2: was a split between shotgun and under center. That makes sense.
- 13:48Speaker 2: He didn't really play much at all under center in college,
- 13:51Speaker 2: and I bet you he didn't do it much in
- 13:53Speaker 2: high school either, because you just don't do it at
- 13:55Speaker 2: the high school and college level as much as they
- 13:57Speaker 2: used to. So what I'm getting at is that Tree
- 14:02Speaker 2: is gonna be like eighty to eighty five percent shotgun.
- 14:06Speaker 2: And I'm talking mostly about neutral situations like fourth quarter,
- 14:10Speaker 2: end of game and you're just trying to run out
- 14:13Speaker 2: the clock. Everybody is gonna probably be under center when
- 14:16Speaker 2: that happens. But when when we're talking about, you know,
- 14:19Speaker 2: in the middle of the game, when the game is
- 14:21Speaker 2: being decided, you know, Philadelphia is like eighty five ninety
- 14:25Speaker 2: percent under center or excuse me, shotgun. And when they
- 14:28Speaker 2: go under center, it's because they're doing the push push,
- 14:30Speaker 2: it's not because they're actually running a you know, a
- 14:33Speaker 2: playbook from under center. Now, when we talk to the
- 14:37Speaker 2: coaches and then some of the reporting that I've seen
- 14:40Speaker 2: from other people on the beat about where they might
- 14:43Speaker 2: be going, it sounds more like they're trying to put
- 14:48Speaker 2: in McVay style stuff. Now McVeigh style stuff would be
- 14:53Speaker 2: under center, wide zone duo runs from under center with
- 14:58Speaker 2: boots and motion of course, you know, motion at the
- 15:02Speaker 2: snap of jet motion, things like that. So if that's
- 15:05Speaker 2: where they end up going with it, and again I'm
- 15:07Speaker 2: not saying that it is or is and it's just
- 15:10Speaker 2: speculating here. If that's the way that they end up
- 15:12Speaker 2: going with it, he's gonna be under center a lot more.
- 15:17Speaker 2: And Josh McDaniels has notoriously been under center a lot more,
- 15:20Speaker 2: just in his career as an offensive coach. So I'm
- 15:24Speaker 2: interested to see where that goes. Like, I'm not concerned
- 15:26Speaker 2: that it's not gonna go well. I just I'm not
- 15:29Speaker 2: certain that it's gonna go well, and so we'll see
- 15:32Speaker 2: what happens.
- 15:33Speaker 1: Now.
- 15:33Speaker 2: I'm encouraged by the fact that maybe you know, Boots,
- 15:36Speaker 2: I think would be good for him. I think that
- 15:38Speaker 2: he's got great athleticism, a great ability to throw on
- 15:42Speaker 2: the run. You get him outside the pocket, which helps
- 15:45Speaker 2: the offensive line. Now you're not traditionally past blocking all
- 15:49Speaker 2: the time too, so that makes it easier in theory
- 15:51Speaker 2: to protect the quarterback if you can sell it, and
- 15:55Speaker 2: he can pick up yards with his legs himself if
- 15:58Speaker 2: there's nothing open down the field, and just eat up
- 16:01Speaker 2: the underneath stuff. So you almost don't even need to
- 16:03Speaker 2: put a guy in the flat because he kind of
- 16:05Speaker 2: is the flat, right, He's going to influence the flat
- 16:07Speaker 2: defender to take him.
- 16:09Speaker 1: It keeps teams honest in the run game too. Yeah,
- 16:11Speaker 1: they're still gonna be running the ball one. Yeah.
- 16:13Speaker 2: So if the plan is wide zone boot and trying
- 16:17Speaker 2: to do that, I look, they've been trying to do
- 16:20Speaker 2: that since twenty twenty two and failed. They've been trying
- 16:23Speaker 2: to run a wide zone boot scheme or incorporate more
- 16:26Speaker 2: of that stuff for eons, like it feels like, but
- 16:30Speaker 2: maybe they can kind of get it done this time
- 16:32Speaker 2: with the coaches that they have on staff, with McDaniels,
- 16:36Speaker 2: and be able to pull it off this time. So
- 16:39Speaker 2: we'll see. But that that's where I think, you know,
- 16:42Speaker 2: everybody's sort of guessing that they're going is more towards
- 16:45Speaker 2: that McVeigh influence and being under center and using motion
- 16:50Speaker 2: to undress the defense and manipulate the defense, and then
- 16:54Speaker 2: you know, having boot legs and half boots and all
- 16:57Speaker 2: that good stuff. But I do kind of hope that
- 17:00Speaker 2: they they don't completely ignore some of the stuff that
- 17:03Speaker 2: Thomas Brown could bring in from the Frank Reich school. Sure,
- 17:08Speaker 2: and you know some of that stuff as well, from
- 17:10Speaker 2: the gun runs and the RPOs and and things of
- 17:13Speaker 2: that good nature. So we'll see, you know, they have
- 17:16Speaker 2: to put it on film first, I think you know,
- 17:18Speaker 2: watching these practices, you can glean some of the things
- 17:21Speaker 2: that they're gonna do schematically, but it never really takes
- 17:24Speaker 2: hold until you can break it down on tape and
- 17:26Speaker 2: see exactly what they're doing. So, right, do you have
- 17:28Speaker 2: any other thoughts on that or should we move on
- 17:30Speaker 2: to the next thing.
- 17:31Speaker 1: I think you covered it. Okay, I'll just say this
- 17:34Speaker 1: because we do this every year, we have this conversation
- 17:37Speaker 1: and it's probably not going to go anywhere, but I'll
- 17:39Speaker 1: do my part and say it pistol pistol, Like that's
- 17:42Speaker 1: the happy medium between under center.
- 17:44Speaker 2: And chock gun pistol. So we brought it incorporate some pistol. Sure,
- 17:47Speaker 2: and we've talked about the pistol a lot, and the
- 17:50Speaker 2: coach that one of the coaches you hate. Really what
- 17:55Speaker 2: I think is probably Mike McDaniel's best what's the word
- 18:00Speaker 2: like schematic twist is that he took the Kyle Shanahan
- 18:04Speaker 2: offense and adapted it to fit TUA by running all
- 18:09Speaker 2: of the same concepts that they run in the Shanahan
- 18:11Speaker 2: offense from the pistol.
- 18:14Speaker 1: I've never said Mike McDaniel is not a good offense
- 18:16Speaker 1: coordinator because I think he is. Yeah, I just don't
- 18:18Speaker 1: think he's a good head coach, fair enough, but he
- 18:20Speaker 1: So this goes in the offense coordinator.
- 18:21Speaker 2: Get him because Tua is not as comfortable under center.
- 18:24Speaker 2: He's also a shorter quarterback, so that hurts him from
- 18:26Speaker 2: under center as well. So they run all of the
- 18:29Speaker 2: same actions, wide zone boots things like that, but they
- 18:34Speaker 2: run it from the pistol with the quarterback and then
- 18:36Speaker 2: the running back directly behind the quarterback. And they do
- 18:39Speaker 2: a little sidecar stuff too with the full back right next.
- 18:41Speaker 1: To the Q. Get in like sort full house. Yeah. Yeah,
- 18:45Speaker 1: Which if you're gonna have Spencer Larsen at Spencer Larson, Wow,
- 18:48Speaker 1: that's a throwback.
- 18:49Speaker 2: I don't know where that came from.
- 18:50Speaker 1: When was he the full back like two thousand and six?
- 18:52Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't know. You're talking about Brock Lampy.
- 18:54Speaker 1: Lampy, thank you. Yes, if you're gonna Brock Lampy or
- 18:57Speaker 1: maybe even jaheem Bell and like those guys are gonna
- 18:59Speaker 1: p a role on the offense like that's or even
- 19:03Speaker 1: Land Larrison, who's he's not a full backsize, he's a
- 19:06Speaker 1: bigger running back and can embrace the physicality yeah, you
- 19:09Speaker 1: could have a lot of fun with those pistols, sort
- 19:12Speaker 1: of mini full house.
- 19:14Speaker 2: Yes, yeah, I'm all for the pistol, you know that.
- 19:17Speaker 2: But my whole thing, and I know we've talked about
- 19:19Speaker 2: this at nauseum and people I.
- 19:22Speaker 1: Spencer Larson has not been on the Patriots since twenty twelve.
- 19:25Speaker 1: He hasn't played in the NFL since twenty thirteen. Well
- 19:27Speaker 1: you got Spencer Larson on your mind. I don't apparently,
- 19:29Speaker 1: I don't know where that came from. If anything, I
- 19:31Speaker 1: thought i'd say a long snapper, so I he didn't
- 19:34Speaker 1: even play a game here.
- 19:36Speaker 2: You're just in Madden mode over there, I think is No,
- 19:40Speaker 2: it's not even related. I don't know where that came from.
- 19:43Speaker 2: A million texts about this new Madden thing, Madden thing.
- 19:47Speaker 2: We'll get to that maybe, yeah, in the second hour.
- 19:49Speaker 2: But what was like going must have been a number
- 19:51Speaker 2: forty six thing. The last thing I was gonna say
- 19:53Speaker 2: about the pistol.
- 19:55Speaker 1: We're talking about the full house. So yeah, you know,
- 19:58Speaker 1: with the quarterback.
- 19:59Speaker 2: And I feel like I'm in the minority when it
- 20:02Speaker 2: comes to designing ways for Drake May to run. I
- 20:07Speaker 2: don't think a lot of people want to do that.
- 20:09Speaker 1: I get it.
- 20:09Speaker 2: He got banged up a little bit last year. At times,
- 20:12Speaker 2: he's the franchise. People want to be careful with him.
- 20:16Speaker 2: But the big reason why I continue to be in
- 20:19Speaker 2: the minority on that point is that I don't think
- 20:22Speaker 2: that you're gonna max Drake may out unless you let
- 20:25Speaker 2: him run around a little bit. I truly don't, and
- 20:27Speaker 2: I don't want to turn him into Lamar Jackson.
- 20:29Speaker 1: No. So that's the thing I'm not totally anti. Don't
- 20:33Speaker 1: confuse the people who say he shouldn't run and you
- 20:35Speaker 1: shouldn't have designed runs with You got to be careful
- 20:39Speaker 1: about how much you run him, because those are two
- 20:41Speaker 1: different things. They do need to run him designed a
- 20:44Speaker 1: bit because that's just that's just the game now. And yeah,
- 20:50Speaker 1: you have it's a huge benefit if you have that
- 20:51Speaker 1: quarterback run element in your back. But and then you've
- 20:55Speaker 1: heard me talk about this with Josh Allen all the time,
- 20:57Speaker 1: like there's an equilibrium. Yeah, you don't want to run
- 20:59Speaker 1: him so little that you lose that chess piece in
- 21:04Speaker 1: that factor that has keeped the defense honest. But you
- 21:06Speaker 1: don't want to run him so much that he's getting
- 21:08Speaker 1: banged up and he's becoming less of a player both
- 21:11Speaker 1: as a runner and a passer.
- 21:12Speaker 2: And it's not easy.
- 21:13Speaker 1: There's no like thirty carries boom like, there's no exact
- 21:16Speaker 1: number from game to game, season to season that defines that.
- 21:20Speaker 1: I think it's really one of the harder things for
- 21:22Speaker 1: an offense coordinator and a team to figure out. But
- 21:24Speaker 1: the Patriots, now one of these teams is going to
- 21:26Speaker 1: kind of have to find that equilibrium. And there might
- 21:28Speaker 1: not be one there honestly might not be one, but
- 21:30Speaker 1: they're gonna be one of the teams now with Drake
- 21:32Speaker 1: may just like the Bill's been doing for years with
- 21:34Speaker 1: Josh Allen, that has to find that.
- 21:35Speaker 2: So I'm not advocating for Drake made to be them
- 21:39Speaker 2: designing runs for him a ton in the open field
- 21:42Speaker 2: like between the twenties, as part of like the core
- 21:46Speaker 2: tenants of their offense like a Baltimore and Lamar Jackson,
- 21:49Speaker 2: not even like readoption stuff. I would be okay with
- 21:52Speaker 2: that from the gun, But I'm not saying that I
- 21:55Speaker 2: want him to run the ball like one hundred times
- 21:57Speaker 2: a year, right like Cam Newton did in twenty twenty,
- 22:00Speaker 2: asking for that. But the things that I think are
- 22:02Speaker 2: important for him to incorporate his legs on are short yardage,
- 22:07Speaker 2: high leverage situations, right third down and two third down
- 22:11Speaker 2: and one goal line. You know, those are the types
- 22:14Speaker 2: of things that just having the quarterback account for somebody
- 22:18Speaker 2: or the defense have to account for the quarterback in
- 22:20Speaker 2: some capacity, just as it's such a schematic advantage to
- 22:26Speaker 2: the offense that makes it so difficult to defend you
- 22:29Speaker 2: that I you kind of have to do it if
- 22:31Speaker 2: you have that ability as the quarterback. Like if you
- 22:34Speaker 2: don't have a mobile quarterback, then obviously you're not going
- 22:36Speaker 2: to do it. You know, if you have Kirk Cousins,
- 22:37Speaker 2: you're not going to be running zone reads on the
- 22:39Speaker 2: goal line. But with a guy like Drake May, you
- 22:42Speaker 2: absolutely can. And the only time that he keeps is
- 22:45Speaker 2: when it's like a clear path to the end zone
- 22:47Speaker 2: and ideally he's not even getting hit, right, he's just
- 22:49Speaker 2: waltzing into the end zone like he did in the preseason.
- 22:52Speaker 2: I think that was what Week two of the preseason
- 22:54Speaker 2: last year where he scored that rushing touchdown and he
- 22:56Speaker 2: just kind of waltzed into.
- 22:57Speaker 1: The end zone. He had one of the regular season
- 22:59Speaker 1: two did he was it against Houston? He had one
- 23:03Speaker 1: last year he was in the throwbacks. Okay, I remember that,
- 23:06Speaker 1: I'll pull it up. But so, and that's just what
- 23:08Speaker 1: we're on. The drake may like another thing they can
- 23:10Speaker 1: do and maybe this isn't the setting to do it.
- 23:13Speaker 1: Figure out what his I don't even know what probably
- 23:17Speaker 1: is a technical phrase for it, but like how he's
- 23:19Speaker 1: gonna terminate his runs right and ideally if he's by
- 23:23Speaker 1: the sideline, he gets the sideline, or if he can score,
- 23:26Speaker 1: he scores. But like is gonna because we went through
- 23:29Speaker 1: this last year where like is sliding the best thing
- 23:32Speaker 1: because in the action of the slide, you leave yourself exposed,
- 23:35Speaker 1: even if you're giving yourself up.
- 23:36Speaker 2: And yeah, yeah, it's.
- 23:37Speaker 1: A penalty people like diving for like head first, right
- 23:40Speaker 1: you can talk and cover and like kind of figuring
- 23:42Speaker 1: out how they want him to do that is something
- 23:45Speaker 1: else that should be on the to do list this offseason. Absolutely,
- 23:47Speaker 1: all right, let's move on.
- 23:49Speaker 2: The next thing I wanted to talk about here on
- 23:51Speaker 2: the Old Rundown is Stefan Diggs being out at Patriots
- 23:54Speaker 2: practice on Monday. Our first look at Stefan Diggs out
- 23:58Speaker 2: of Patriot practice, and I gotta say I'm excited I'm excited.
- 24:02Speaker 1: I can't.
- 24:02Speaker 2: How can you not be excited watching a receiver of
- 24:06Speaker 2: that caliber in a Patriot uniform in a Patriot practice,
- 24:10Speaker 2: even though it was against air. Catching passes from Drake
- 24:13Speaker 2: may on routes against air is still something that we
- 24:16Speaker 2: haven't seen yet and I was really excited.
- 24:19Speaker 1: Thing.
- 24:19Speaker 2: The two things that stand out are obviously how far
- 24:22Speaker 2: along he is physically, and you know, we don't have
- 24:26Speaker 2: any inside information on truly what his timeline is or
- 24:29Speaker 2: anything like that, but he based off of what we've
- 24:33Speaker 2: seen from other players, and the one that we a
- 24:36Speaker 2: lot of people have gone back and compared it to
- 24:38Speaker 2: because its recent is Kendrick Bourne's recovery from his ACL
- 24:42Speaker 2: a couple of years ago. And Kendrick Bourne tore his
- 24:45Speaker 2: ACL in October. Stefond Day to his ACL in October,
- 24:50Speaker 2: so it's like kind of the same exact timeline. And
- 24:52Speaker 2: we never saw Kendrick Bourne in a practice until he
- 24:57Speaker 2: was on the field on a game.
- 24:59Speaker 1: Like you.
- 25:00Speaker 2: He was out there in a T shirt and shorts,
- 25:02Speaker 2: just kind of walking around. Yeah, we never saw him
- 25:05Speaker 2: do positional drills. We never saw him do jogg thrus. Obviously,
- 25:10Speaker 2: Stefan Diggs did not do team periods, but this is
- 25:14Speaker 2: already further along than a lot of guys that we've
- 25:17Speaker 2: seen in our experience on the Beat Beat at this point.
- 25:23Speaker 2: And again, I don't want to put necessarily put timelines
- 25:26Speaker 2: on it, but I can't help but feeling like his
- 25:28Speaker 2: goal of being back for week one is not totally
- 25:30Speaker 2: out of sight. Like when you look at him moving,
- 25:33Speaker 2: there might be a little bit still of like his
- 25:35Speaker 2: gait is like maybe a little bit of a limp,
- 25:37Speaker 2: like it's not one hundred percent yet, But he was
- 25:40Speaker 2: looking really good. I mean the routes he was running.
- 25:43Speaker 2: When he was actually running the route, he was looking explosive,
- 25:46Speaker 2: he was looking fast. And the other thing that stood
- 25:49Speaker 2: out to me is just the type of swagger and
- 25:52Speaker 2: confidence that a true superstar receiver like Stefan Diggs brings
- 25:57Speaker 2: to a practice and brings that kind of two at practice.
- 26:01Speaker 2: They haven't had a guy like that in quite some
- 26:03Speaker 2: time that comes on the field and is like all right,
- 26:06Speaker 2: like you know the alpha is here right, like that
- 26:10Speaker 2: sort of thing. And I know he's older, I know
- 26:12Speaker 2: he's coming off the injury, but this was extremely exciting
- 26:16Speaker 2: to me to watch this unfold and the fact that
- 26:20Speaker 2: they're already getting him into some of these walkthroughs. Tells
- 26:22Speaker 2: me that they're thinking that maybe this timeline is going
- 26:26Speaker 2: to be you know, accelerated compared to other ACL recoveries
- 26:31Speaker 2: as well, because other you know, they're trying to get
- 26:33Speaker 2: him in on the plates, right, they want to get
- 26:35Speaker 2: him running and get him in on the places. So
- 26:37Speaker 2: what did you see from Stefan Diggs? I was super
- 26:40Speaker 2: excited about what I saw.
- 26:42Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean you hit on a lot of it,
- 26:43Speaker 1: just the way he was moving. And this was the
- 26:46Speaker 1: big unknown when they signed him, was this is a
- 26:48Speaker 1: guy that's what thirty one years old right coming off
- 26:51Speaker 1: of torn ACL. You don't know if he's gonna look
- 26:54Speaker 1: the same and what's the timeline look like. And he
- 26:57Speaker 1: didn't do any of the competitive team stuff, right, He
- 27:00Speaker 1: did individual positional stuff. He did some of that walk
- 27:03Speaker 1: through stuff that was offensive'us defense and that was it.
- 27:05Speaker 1: And then he was over on that side field with
- 27:07Speaker 1: Jalen Polk was also rehabbing. But like for for what
- 27:10Speaker 1: he did, I don't want to say he was full
- 27:12Speaker 1: go because he didn't do every drill, but when he
- 27:13Speaker 1: was on the field, like it looked like he was
- 27:16Speaker 1: running one hundred percent and planting and cutting one hundred percent.
- 27:19Speaker 1: Like in that sense, he looked good to go. Clearly
- 27:23Speaker 1: there's some other checkpoints he has to hit, which isn't
- 27:26Speaker 1: surprising given the timeline. Like you mentioned to, Mike g
- 27:29Speaker 1: already reported yesterday that he's still not one hundred percent.
- 27:33Speaker 1: He hasn't been fully cleared, which is what we saw.
- 27:36Speaker 1: But if he's doing that now, can he start to
- 27:40Speaker 1: be involved in some of the team stuff in camp. Yeah,
- 27:42Speaker 1: and if he can do that well, now week ones
- 27:45Speaker 1: realistic because he'll be on the same page as Drake
- 27:47Speaker 1: may because that's part of.
- 27:48Speaker 2: With Kendrick Porne too. Last year, remember is it wanted
- 27:51Speaker 2: some lead up time? Yeah, it was game shape, it
- 27:53Speaker 2: was up time, that sort of saying. It wasn't that
- 27:56Speaker 2: he wasn't structurally healthy, He just wasn't.
- 27:59Speaker 1: He wasn't football. It wasn't in football shape. So if
- 28:03Speaker 1: that's something Digs can work out and camp now week
- 28:07Speaker 1: ones on the table.
- 28:08Speaker 2: So look, I don't know what the inside his knee
- 28:09Speaker 2: looks like.
- 28:10Speaker 1: I haven't seen the X ray. I'm not a doctor.
- 28:11Speaker 1: I wouldn't know what to make of it if I did.
- 28:13Speaker 1: But just the way he's moving out there. You usually
- 28:15Speaker 1: don't see guys that recently off in ACL moving like that,
- 28:20Speaker 1: so you have to figure that he's ahead of schedule.
- 28:22Speaker 1: And Kendrick Bourne last year, I think that the talk
- 28:26Speaker 1: and this was externally. We don't know exactly, but it
- 28:28Speaker 1: was kind of like he probably wouldn't have needed to
- 28:31Speaker 1: miss all four games he had a missed by opening
- 28:33Speaker 1: on PUP, but he would have missed a couple so
- 28:37Speaker 1: it just made more sense put him on PUP and
- 28:39Speaker 1: give him the ramp up time and like. And that's
- 28:41Speaker 1: not uncommon for guys coming off with torn ACL. But
- 28:43Speaker 1: let's say realistically, like Bourne could have gone in week
- 28:46Speaker 1: two or three, it looks like Diggs is more than
- 28:49Speaker 1: two or three weeks ahead of where Kendrick Bourne was.
- 28:51Speaker 1: Yeah so. And I don't think Bourne was slow by
- 28:53Speaker 1: any means in his return. That was about what everybody
- 28:56Speaker 1: was expecting. Yeah So's it was definitely encouraging just to
- 29:00Speaker 1: see how well Diggs was moving.
- 29:02Speaker 2: I really feel like Stefan Diggs and assuming that everything
- 29:10Speaker 2: goes well with him, you know, in terms of his
- 29:13Speaker 2: buying and things like that, I really feel like Stefan
- 29:16Speaker 2: Diggs is going to be a huge impact player for
- 29:21Speaker 2: this team based off of what we saw the other day.
- 29:24Speaker 2: I know it's only one practice, but I'm also basing
- 29:26Speaker 2: it off of what he looked like in Houston before
- 29:29Speaker 2: he got hurt last year, what he's looked like in
- 29:31Speaker 2: some of these videos that he's posted on social media
- 29:34Speaker 2: of his work, probably workouts away from the facility that
- 29:37Speaker 2: he's been doing to me, but you know, just off
- 29:40Speaker 2: the eye test, like he looks like Steffan Diggs, Like
- 29:42Speaker 2: he looks like a guy that is moving with purpose,
- 29:46Speaker 2: like explosive cuts in and out of breaks, you know,
- 29:49Speaker 2: changing directions on a dime, running routes, like the technician
- 29:53Speaker 2: that he has been in the past. And when you
- 29:55Speaker 2: start to think about the ways that he can be
- 29:57Speaker 2: used in a Josh McDaniel offense, and how they can
- 30:00Speaker 2: put him different spots in the formation, whether it's out
- 30:03Speaker 2: wide or in the slot, or in a bunch or
- 30:05Speaker 2: in a condensed split, or whatever the case may be,
- 30:08Speaker 2: they can find all these different ways to get him
- 30:11Speaker 2: off the line of scrimmage and into good matchups and
- 30:14Speaker 2: his whole career and even last year in Houston, he
- 30:18Speaker 2: was on pace for another one hundred catch season, he
- 30:20Speaker 2: was gonna have one hundred catches over a thousand yards
- 30:23Speaker 2: for the Texans last year before he got hurt. If
- 30:25Speaker 2: Stefan Diggs is healthy, Stefan Texas catching a hundred balls
- 30:29Speaker 2: like that's just that's the reality, especially in this offense. Yeah,
- 30:32Speaker 2: they're gonna use him the way we think they're gonna
- 30:33Speaker 2: use it. So I don't see any reason to believe
- 30:36Speaker 2: on you know, June fourth, which I get is were
- 30:38Speaker 2: ways away from actually playing games. If he's healthy, I
- 30:42Speaker 2: don't see any reason to believe that he's not going
- 30:44Speaker 2: to be one hundred balls like he is every other
- 30:47Speaker 2: year of his career. So that that's an extremely incouraged.
- 30:50Speaker 1: The bigger question than me, And this goes more to
- 30:53Speaker 1: the structure of his knee because it's it's more yards
- 30:55Speaker 1: after the catch. He Oh yeah, he has caught a
- 30:58Speaker 1: hundred passes every yr going back for year in Buffalo.
- 31:00Speaker 2: Yeah, thousand yards.
- 31:02Speaker 1: Yeah, that's I think what we're because Edelman is still
- 31:05Speaker 1: the Patriots last thousand yard receiver, right, yep.
- 31:07Speaker 2: Yeah, eight hundred would be like Jacobe Myers, Kendrick Bourne.
- 31:10Speaker 2: I think a clip stayed on him like seven hundred
- 31:12Speaker 2: yeast year, right, yeah, last one thousand yard receiver is
- 31:15Speaker 2: Edelman in nineteen I think.
- 31:16Speaker 1: Is he also the last hundred cat allo?
- 31:18Speaker 2: Yeah, I think that's definitely in play. Now I've said
- 31:21Speaker 2: it before with Diggs, I'll say it again. The one
- 31:24Speaker 2: thing that I would, you know, I think fans should
- 31:26Speaker 2: prepare for is that the Stefan Diggs towards the end
- 31:30Speaker 2: in Buffalo and the Stefan Diggs in Houston before he
- 31:32Speaker 2: got hurt last year was a possession receiver. This is
- 31:36Speaker 2: a middle of the field, first and second level possession receiver.
- 31:40Speaker 2: The days of him being like the explosive take the
- 31:43Speaker 2: top off the defense, you know, really take chunks out
- 31:46Speaker 2: of the defense type of guy. I don't know if
- 31:49Speaker 2: that is still his game, like I and that's not
- 31:52Speaker 2: a bad thing. It's just that he's gonna be the
- 31:55Speaker 2: chain mover, the engine, the possession guy in this offense
- 31:59Speaker 2: when he's healthy, and they've got to find and we
- 32:01Speaker 2: can talk about some other guys in that room like
- 32:04Speaker 2: we got. They got to find the explosive place like
- 32:06Speaker 2: they're gonna have to find that I think still someplace else.
- 32:09Speaker 2: Not saying that Diggs isn't gonna have any explosive places,
- 32:12Speaker 2: because I'm sure he'll have some, but that's not where
- 32:15Speaker 2: he was last year with Houston. It's not where he
- 32:17Speaker 2: was in his last season in Buffalo. You know, his
- 32:19Speaker 2: last year in Buffalo and last year in Houston. It's
- 32:22Speaker 2: you know, third and six, We're gonna find Stefon Diggs
- 32:24Speaker 2: over the middle for eight or nine yards like that.
- 32:26Speaker 2: That was his game and that's a ton of value
- 32:29Speaker 2: to have that kind of you know, safety net for
- 32:31Speaker 2: a quarterback. I'm not saying that there's no value in
- 32:33Speaker 2: that by any means, but just that that's the one
- 32:36Speaker 2: thing I would prepare for with Diggs.
- 32:38Speaker 1: All right, die, here is this right, Julian Edelman. So,
- 32:41Speaker 1: Julian Edmind's the only got with one hundred catches since
- 32:43Speaker 1: I went back ten years, Yeah, twenty fourteen. He only
- 32:47Speaker 1: did it once in that span.
- 32:49Speaker 2: I could believe that because you know, the Edelman had
- 32:51Speaker 2: some injury, right, So I went back twenty to fifteen.
- 32:53Speaker 2: He was probably on pace for his best season and
- 32:56Speaker 2: that's when he got hurt.
- 32:57Speaker 1: Right, So I went back to the year, so we
- 33:01Speaker 1: caught one hundred and thirteen. The ninety two sixty one
- 33:05Speaker 1: was fifteen. He got hurt. He had ninety eight in
- 33:08Speaker 1: twenty sixteen, So he was right there. Seventy four caught
- 33:11Speaker 1: one hundred and nineteen, and then he just caught twenty
- 33:13Speaker 1: one that last year. So they've only had one guy
- 33:15Speaker 1: catch one hundred balls in the last decade.
- 33:20Speaker 2: Yeah, that's crazy. But so Diggs maybe did James White
- 33:24Speaker 2: never did it.
- 33:25Speaker 1: No, So James White I think peaked at seventy. Okay,
- 33:29Speaker 1: I have a James White adjacent take if you want
- 33:32Speaker 1: to talk about the running backs, but I want to
- 33:35Speaker 1: find a one thousand yard receivers first.
- 33:37Speaker 2: What's your what's your take? I was the last thousand
- 33:39Speaker 2: yard receiver.
- 33:39Speaker 1: Edelman in nineteen, also Cooks in seventeen, Gronk and seventeen
- 33:42Speaker 1: Man that offense was awesome. Edelman in sixteen, Gronkin fifteen,
- 33:47Speaker 1: Gronkin fourteen.
- 33:48Speaker 2: Not to go on nostalgia and when we have stuff
- 33:51Speaker 2: to talk about, but the fact that we never got
- 33:54Speaker 2: to see Cooks, Gronk and Edelman on the field together
- 33:58Speaker 2: is such a bummer.
- 33:59Speaker 1: They're just going to.
- 33:59Speaker 2: Ruin in my day right now. Well, that's what we're doing.
- 34:02Speaker 2: It's just such a bummer, like that offense. That offense
- 34:06Speaker 2: felt like it had I didn't say, oh, seven potential,
- 34:10Speaker 2: but like had the potential to be one of the
- 34:13Speaker 2: one of the better offenses of the entire twenty.
- 34:16Speaker 1: Eleven potential maybe, Yeah, like sevens off for twenty ten,
- 34:21Speaker 1: that's what I meant. Yeah, twenty ten. Yeah, I that's
- 34:25Speaker 1: that's one of my big second guests of the Dynasty.
- 34:27Speaker 1: And look, they obviously were very successful, but like.
- 34:28Speaker 2: Well, they literally won the Super Bowl the next.
- 34:30Speaker 1: Year with them. I know, I wish they kept Cooks, though.
- 34:32Speaker 1: I also just always really liked him as a player.
- 34:34Speaker 1: That's so I had a hot take at the time
- 34:36Speaker 1: because do you remember why the Saints traded Cooks Because
- 34:39Speaker 1: him and Michael Thomas were both upset and they were
- 34:40Speaker 1: getting the balling off, and they basically had a trade
- 34:43Speaker 1: one to meet the other happy. I said at the time,
- 34:45Speaker 1: they traded the wrong guy. And this was right at
- 34:47Speaker 1: the peak hype of slant Boy. Michael Thomas had just
- 34:51Speaker 1: caught like one hundred and thirty five Fastes or something like,
- 34:53Speaker 1: you're nuts, Brandon Cooks is just fast whatever. Yeah, in retrospect.
- 34:56Speaker 2: No, if Brandon Cooks had a great Brandon.
- 34:58Speaker 1: Cooks had a much better career than Michael Thomas. Did.
- 35:01Speaker 1: Brandon Cooks was a very good player. He's still a
- 35:04Speaker 1: bad play ya, He's still had a bad player. Not
- 35:05Speaker 1: what he was, but he still had a bad player
- 35:07Speaker 1: as enough. Brandon Cook's reminiscing, but I'm always down to
- 35:10Speaker 1: do more if you guys want to call him talk
- 35:11Speaker 1: Brandon Cooks. James White peaked at eighty seven catches in
- 35:15Speaker 1: twenty eighteen seventy two the next year. So my take
- 35:18Speaker 1: on this is, I think a it's going to depend
- 35:21Speaker 1: how they split the snaps right and obviously health, but
- 35:24Speaker 1: looking at how they're using the running backs in the
- 35:27Speaker 1: spring and still early, but looking at how they're using
- 35:29Speaker 1: their running backs in the spring, not just who's out there,
- 35:31Speaker 1: but some of the formational stuff they're doing, the pairings
- 35:34Speaker 1: they're doing with these guys, I think a running back
- 35:38Speaker 1: finishes and I I'm not ready to say who, but
- 35:42Speaker 1: I think a running back finishes top three on the
- 35:44Speaker 1: team in catches this year, maybe even top two if
- 35:47Speaker 1: Diggs is fully healthy, Digs will be one. There's I
- 35:50Speaker 1: think there's a real chance of running back as second
- 35:52Speaker 1: most catches. And again you'll.
- 35:54Speaker 2: Definitely think there's a chance that Trayvon Anderson is.
- 35:56Speaker 1: That Yeah, you look at the last couple of years
- 35:58Speaker 1: of Josh James Flight really kind of took over the
- 36:01Speaker 1: role in twenty sixteen sixty catches, fifty six, eighty seven,
- 36:05Speaker 1: seventy two, and then he was hurt the last two
- 36:08Speaker 1: years forty nine to twelve. But in the peak there's
- 36:10Speaker 1: anywhere from really sixty to seventy catches, and then got
- 36:12Speaker 1: up to eighty seven that one year. So my thing
- 36:15Speaker 1: with Henderson is like, how are they gonna split the carries?
- 36:18Speaker 1: Is gonna be on the field enough if it truly
- 36:19Speaker 1: is just Travion Henderson in the James White role. Yeah,
- 36:23Speaker 1: Travion Henderson's gonna be top three in the team catches
- 36:25Speaker 1: if he stays healthy.
- 36:26Speaker 2: So there's two ways to look at what at this take.
- 36:29Speaker 2: The one way is in a positive that Trayvon Henderson
- 36:33Speaker 2: is a difference maker and they're just trying to find
- 36:34Speaker 2: ways to get him.
- 36:35Speaker 1: Before the balls. I think you're gonna there's two things
- 36:37Speaker 1: behind this take. That's one of them.
- 36:38Speaker 2: The other one is is that we just drafted this
- 36:41Speaker 2: running back in the top of the second round and
- 36:43Speaker 2: we need to get him touches.
- 36:44Speaker 1: Oh no, there's another part of the takedown so that's
- 36:48Speaker 1: because I'm a worry ward Yeah.
- 36:50Speaker 2: If the one thing that I worry about with Trayvon
- 36:53Speaker 2: Henderson and a little bit based off what we've seen
- 36:55Speaker 2: in these practices too, is that like the swing screen
- 36:58Speaker 2: in the flat to Travion Henderson is just gonna be
- 37:01Speaker 2: spammed all season long, whether it's working or not, because
- 37:04Speaker 2: they're trying to make Travon Henderson happen well like and
- 37:07Speaker 2: it brings me back a little bit to like John
- 37:09Speaker 2: and Smith in twenty twenty one.
- 37:10Speaker 1: So but like they've been good about it too, Like
- 37:13Speaker 1: they when Damien Harris, who was not picked his eye
- 37:16Speaker 1: as Travan Henderson was top one hundred pick like, when
- 37:18Speaker 1: it didn't work with him right away, they sat him.
- 37:22Speaker 2: Now they had other options. I'm not worried about it
- 37:24Speaker 2: not working because Henderson can't make it work.
- 37:28Speaker 1: It's just are they just one of them one of
- 37:31Speaker 1: overdoing it?
- 37:31Speaker 2: And like one of the little faults of Josh because
- 37:34Speaker 2: you know, I love McDaniels, but one of the little
- 37:36Speaker 2: faults that he has at times is you know, force
- 37:39Speaker 2: feeding targets and touches on like you know, the same
- 37:45Speaker 2: play screenplay.
- 37:46Speaker 1: Like yeah, ad time, So here's The thing with with
- 37:49Speaker 1: Henderson though, for me, like if you were just gonna
- 37:51Speaker 1: rank as his potential because a lot of these guys
- 37:54Speaker 1: we havent seen him yet. But like if you were
- 37:55Speaker 1: going to rank explosive playmaking ability, big place threat from
- 38:01Speaker 1: their skill position players, he's number one probably. I think
- 38:04Speaker 1: he's number one. I don't think he's number one, He's
- 38:05Speaker 1: up there. I really in terms of a guy that
- 38:08Speaker 1: has skill position, not running back skill position, So the
- 38:10Speaker 1: best skill on the team currently, that has the best
- 38:14Speaker 1: breaking express you know, the ability to tilt, you know,
- 38:17Speaker 1: flip the field right with his speed. Yeah, I would
- 38:19Speaker 1: say probably to be Travon Henderson.
- 38:21Speaker 2: Yeah, I'd put Pop ahead of him, But I mean maybe,
- 38:26Speaker 2: I mean tray Van Henderson hasn't played yet in the NFL.
- 38:28Speaker 1: That's part of it.
- 38:29Speaker 2: If we're just going off of pure game breaking speed
- 38:32Speaker 2: and play in space, like I I.
- 38:34Speaker 1: Popped, you feel strong. So that was part of the
- 38:37Speaker 1: other reason I gave that take is like McDaniel's the volume,
- 38:40Speaker 1: Like he has certain guys that he just wants to
- 38:42Speaker 1: feed the ball. Yeah, I would imagine tray Van Henderson
- 38:46Speaker 1: is gonna be on that short list, Like they don't
- 38:47Speaker 1: have how many volume receivers do they have? Digs can
- 38:51Speaker 1: bait certainly Kyle Williams. Maybe I'm I I still like
- 38:55Speaker 1: to pick. I'm still not entirely sure how they're gonna
- 38:56Speaker 1: use him. I'm interested to see what that's gonna look like.
- 39:00Speaker 1: So he could be depending on his role, but the
- 39:01Speaker 1: X isn't usually a volume role in Josh McDaniel's offense,
- 39:04Speaker 1: and then Hunter Henry, so there's not in Remandre Hermandre
- 39:07Speaker 1: is gonna get his fair share the pass game, though maybe.
- 39:10Speaker 2: Not in the past. I'm saying, like throwing the ball
- 39:12Speaker 2: in general, he's gonna get.
- 39:14Speaker 1: But I just I think Henderson's probably on the short
- 39:17Speaker 1: list of guys that McDaniels is gonna want a volume roll.
- 39:21Speaker 2: Yeah, it's it's probably, you know, maybe closer than from
- 39:25Speaker 2: between him and Pop And I made it sound but
- 39:27Speaker 2: if I had to say, who's the most uh the
- 39:30Speaker 2: most dangerous player on the field on their roster right now,
- 39:34Speaker 2: I think it's probably Travon Henderson already.
- 39:36Speaker 1: I mean the big play guys to me, and this
- 39:38Speaker 1: is not knowing where Diggs is that after the knee
- 39:40Speaker 1: and you said before he's kind of this more possession
- 39:42Speaker 1: receiver now, uh, it's it's it's in whatever order. Travon Henderson,
- 39:48Speaker 1: Pop Douglas, Kyle Williams, and two of those are unpotential
- 39:50Speaker 1: because their rookies. But like those are those are your
- 39:53Speaker 1: big play threats, Hunter Henry really good player, really good player.
- 39:57Speaker 1: They're more of a chain movie, right. I still think
- 40:00Speaker 1: Rmandreis Evens is a good player. Chain mover, maybe not
- 40:03Speaker 1: as much in the past game. You know, Mac Hollins
- 40:07Speaker 1: chain mover, digs at this point, really good chain mover,
- 40:09Speaker 1: chain mover.
- 40:11Speaker 2: Those are your big play guys. Okay, So moving on
- 40:13Speaker 2: to the next item here I had on my list
- 40:16Speaker 2: Jelanie Devai going down with an injury during practice was
- 40:21Speaker 2: always those things are always a tough scene. You know,
- 40:23Speaker 2: players were huddled around him on a knee and things
- 40:26Speaker 2: like that, and it looked worse than luckily at least
- 40:29Speaker 2: what the reporting is. I think Ian Rapaport was first
- 40:32Speaker 2: on it yesterday saying that it's an injury that's significant
- 40:37Speaker 2: enough to knock him out of mini camp or the
- 40:39Speaker 2: rest of the spring. But that's really just mini camp
- 40:41Speaker 2: at this point. But it's not.
- 40:43Speaker 1: Well, it's also it said the report said that he
- 40:46Speaker 1: should be back by he said he's out until training camp. Yeah,
- 40:49Speaker 1: so that means like maybe some individual stuff he was
- 40:52Speaker 1: going to do in the offseason he won't be able
- 40:53Speaker 1: to do. He might be you know, is he a
- 40:55Speaker 1: guy that opens on pup because he's off on that
- 40:58Speaker 1: side field and has to get back into football shape
- 41:00Speaker 1: for the first week or whatever.
- 41:01Speaker 2: Yeah, So based off the reporting, it's a it's a
- 41:03Speaker 2: calf injury for Jelani to Vuy and and when you
- 41:08Speaker 2: when I heard that report, it made sense to me
- 41:11Speaker 2: why the reaction was the reaction because that could be achilles, right,
- 41:15Speaker 2: and so when everybody was looking, you know, worried and
- 41:19Speaker 2: concerned about Jelanie to Vai, we didn't really know what
- 41:22Speaker 2: it was. It looked like a leg injury, but we
- 41:24Speaker 2: were just looking from across the practice field and really
- 41:27Speaker 2: had no idea. So when the calf injury came out
- 41:29Speaker 2: then and then the achilles, uh would make sense. Is
- 41:32Speaker 2: what people were worried about around him. You know, his
- 41:35Speaker 2: teammates were worried about that it was and those calf injuries.
- 41:41Speaker 2: As we've all become experts, I'm sure on achilles tendentis
- 41:45Speaker 2: for other reasons in this region. Uh, the the calf
- 41:49Speaker 2: is obviously sometimes a prerequisite to blowing in achilles, So
- 41:54Speaker 2: you have to be careful that you don't come back
- 41:57Speaker 2: to early. Happened with Kevin Durant, Uh that he came
- 42:01Speaker 2: back too early, came back for the NBA Finals. What
- 42:04Speaker 2: are you doing over there? I didn't do any came
- 42:06Speaker 2: back for the NBA Finals and uh and ruptured his
- 42:09Speaker 2: achilles after trying to play on a calf injury. So
- 42:12Speaker 2: I'm not you know, I don't know a bunch of
- 42:15Speaker 2: Lyne deVie situation.
- 42:16Speaker 1: Just just put it on the ground. I just want
- 42:17Speaker 1: to work.
- 42:19Speaker 2: Yeah, you think the tape gave out breaking stuff. But
- 42:25Speaker 2: I think that the bigger thing with July Diva is
- 42:28Speaker 2: not necessarily you know his timeline and return from injury,
- 42:31Speaker 2: because we're still ways away from playing any games to
- 42:34Speaker 2: help him out over there. He's just comes into our
- 42:37Speaker 2: studio starts breaking things. I am doing it fell uh
- 42:41Speaker 2: and Uh the biggest thing.
- 42:43Speaker 1: Making sure to not break things. I was swinging the
- 42:45Speaker 1: micro earlier to get more or less tension on the court.
- 42:48Speaker 2: I think there's two things that come from the Diva thing. One,
- 42:51Speaker 2: I don't necessarily think that his job security is one
- 42:54Speaker 2: hundred percent safe on this team. Like, I'm still I
- 42:57Speaker 2: think Devi is a perfectly good football player, but I'm
- 43:00Speaker 2: still trying to figure out his role in this defense
- 43:03Speaker 2: and well exactly he fits within the scheme that they're
- 43:06Speaker 2: trying to run currently. And then the second thing is
- 43:09Speaker 2: is Julyant Devis played a lot of snaps for this
- 43:12Speaker 2: team over the last couple of years. If he is
- 43:14Speaker 2: not there, how do we feel about their other options?
- 43:17Speaker 2: Obviously Splain is going to be a big part of
- 43:19Speaker 2: that linebacker mix, but how do we feel about it
- 43:22Speaker 2: being Christian Ellis and Jack Gibbons and maybe my guy Marte.
- 43:27Speaker 1: I wanted to get to that, Like finally three years later,
- 43:30Speaker 1: you're seeing Marte mop who play some linebacker.
- 43:32Speaker 2: How do you feel, well, coaching staff that's willing to
- 43:35Speaker 2: actually pay fast guys and athletic guys at linebacker are
- 43:39Speaker 2: seeing that it's more of a stylistic Yeah, he can
- 43:42Speaker 2: fit there, but we've had a lot of questions about this,
- 43:45Speaker 2: I feel like on on our shows about linebacker depth
- 43:49Speaker 2: and people not being crazy about their options at linebacker,
- 43:52Speaker 2: and if this coaching staff does have a vision of
- 43:54Speaker 2: how to use Tavia if Tavia is now not in
- 43:56Speaker 2: the mix, that really should bring those questions up even
- 44:00Speaker 2: I would think. So first part of the question will
- 44:02Speaker 2: start there, what do you how do you view Julani
- 44:05Speaker 2: Tavai right now in the scope of this roster.
- 44:08Speaker 1: Yeah, he's right there on the bubble. Yeah, and I
- 44:10Speaker 1: think there's a role for him. And we talked about
- 44:12Speaker 1: this the other week. A guy that comes in goal line,
- 44:15Speaker 1: short yardage and still gives you that thumping downhill, big
- 44:20Speaker 1: physical linebacker that you're probably not gonna have on the
- 44:23Speaker 1: field nearly as much as they used to, but twenty
- 44:26Speaker 1: five thirty percent of the time is a guy you
- 44:28Speaker 1: might want to have in your back pocket. And then
- 44:29Speaker 1: you'll play on special teams as well, right to justify
- 44:31Speaker 1: the roster spy, So that could be a role. Is
- 44:35Speaker 1: that a role that they maybe feel like they have
- 44:37Speaker 1: to have, or maybe you sign somebody the practice squad
- 44:39Speaker 1: that you can elevate for certain games, Like I don't
- 44:41Speaker 1: think Devia has to be that guy. I don't think
- 44:43Speaker 1: he's unique in playing that role. So I think he's
- 44:47Speaker 1: on the bubble. And if he's gonna miss time in camp,
- 44:49Speaker 1: that obviously doesn't help. I don't think it's something he
- 44:51Speaker 1: can't overcome if he's just gonna miss the first week,
- 44:54Speaker 1: you know, especially with that role be back when the
- 44:56Speaker 1: pads are on right, we don't need to see in coverage.
- 44:58Speaker 1: So but I I think he's right there on the bubble.
- 45:01Speaker 1: He's one of these kind of situational guys that this
- 45:04Speaker 1: is what the at large roster spots come down to.
- 45:06Speaker 2: Would they rather have that guy.
- 45:08Speaker 1: Versus maybe it's keeping him to stop the run versus Okay,
- 45:12Speaker 1: well we want to keep a third height end and
- 45:13Speaker 1: a full back. They want to keep c. J. Deprie
- 45:16Speaker 1: and brock Lampy, not Spencer Larson brock Lampy. Right, Maybe
- 45:19Speaker 1: it's you know, keeping that sixth wide receiver is the
- 45:22Speaker 1: difference there. Maybe it's a third quarterback. We go on
- 45:25Speaker 1: on fourth running back, right, So I think that's probably
- 45:28Speaker 1: where he's competing. He's going to be in for one
- 45:31Speaker 1: of those at large spots.
- 45:32Speaker 2: So my view on it with Tovay in terms of
- 45:35Speaker 2: his fit in the defense, there is definitely sound reasoning
- 45:40Speaker 2: to think if they put Robert Splaine and now it's
- 45:43Speaker 2: different defenses, but just you know, stay with me, if
- 45:46Speaker 2: they put Robert Splaine in like a Jawan Bentley type
- 45:48Speaker 2: role where that's he's truly the mic and he's truly
- 45:51Speaker 2: like the tackle you know guy that that's playing at
- 45:55Speaker 2: the point of attack and is reading out run trying
- 45:57Speaker 2: to funnel everything to him. Then you and then you
- 45:59Speaker 2: put to Vie back into that hybrid fixer role I
- 46:03Speaker 2: think is what they used to call it in the
- 46:05Speaker 2: old defense. Like if you put him back in that
- 46:08Speaker 2: like weak side hybrid role, that's what he played at
- 46:11Speaker 2: a really high level at a couple.
- 46:13Speaker 1: Of years ago. Yeah, so I could see the.
- 46:15Speaker 2: Vision of well, if Spolaine is going to really be
- 46:18Speaker 2: the Simon sound funneling the ball to him in the
- 46:21Speaker 2: run game, he's gonna plug the a gaps like that's
- 46:24Speaker 2: Splaine's role in the defense. Then to VI's back to
- 46:28Speaker 2: kind of roaming like he was in twenty three and
- 46:30Speaker 2: here with the Patriots. Then yeah, maybe you could go
- 46:33Speaker 2: back to seeing the good version of Jelanie Tavia last
- 46:36Speaker 2: year when he was trying to play the Juwan Bentley role,
- 46:39Speaker 2: he was overmatched. But maybe if you go back to
- 46:42Speaker 2: that role a couple of years ago, you could see it.
- 46:44Speaker 2: But when I watched these practices him and Anthony Jennings
- 46:48Speaker 2: just stand out to me as guys without a home
- 46:50Speaker 2: right now. I just don't really feel they want to
- 46:53Speaker 2: get smaller, they want to get faster at linebacker. If
- 46:56Speaker 2: you're gonna play weak side linebacker in a defense like
- 46:59Speaker 2: that like this, there's two things that you have to
- 47:02Speaker 2: really be able to do. One thing is you got
- 47:04Speaker 2: to be able to chase the ball right, because you're
- 47:05Speaker 2: gonna be doing you know, a lot of fitting and
- 47:08Speaker 2: then spilling right. So you're gonna have the guys at
- 47:10Speaker 2: the point of attack are gonna try to get the
- 47:12Speaker 2: ball to bounce outside the numbers, So you need to
- 47:15Speaker 2: have somebody that can go across the field and make
- 47:18Speaker 2: that tackle when the ball bounces. Is that really Jelani
- 47:21Speaker 2: Devi's game.
- 47:22Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 47:23Speaker 2: Maybe he can lose some weight and get down to
- 47:25Speaker 2: a faster or more sleek version of himself to be
- 47:27Speaker 2: that way. And the other thing is when you roll
- 47:30Speaker 2: into zone coverage, you know, the weak side linebacker has
- 47:33Speaker 2: a lot of a really high stress zone assignments, especially
- 47:37Speaker 2: in cover three defenses when he's playing like the week Cook,
- 47:40Speaker 2: where like you might have to pick up a crossing
- 47:42Speaker 2: route or something like that from the opposite side. So
- 47:45Speaker 2: there's a lot of athleticism that it usually takes to
- 47:49Speaker 2: play that kind of role in this a true even
- 47:53Speaker 2: front mechanic type defense. So we'll see what if that's
- 47:58Speaker 2: to buy Like, it definitely feels like it's a little
- 48:00Speaker 2: bit more Christian Ellis, Jack Gibbons, you know, one of
- 48:03Speaker 2: those types of guys. Maybe it's Marte mop who finally
- 48:06Speaker 2: clicks for him and it's sort of his type of role.
- 48:09Speaker 2: Maybe it's you know, dugger in the box right and
- 48:13Speaker 2: he's the one that's really playing that kind of weak
- 48:16Speaker 2: side role. So it'd be interesting to see where that
- 48:18Speaker 2: goes in terms of his fit. Because Jennings stand up edgsetter,
- 48:23Speaker 2: this is a four down defense, Like, that's not really
- 48:26Speaker 2: a role anymore in this defense. To vise, you know,
- 48:29Speaker 2: that big hybrid linebacker, that's not really a role too
- 48:33Speaker 2: much in this defense either. So whenever we watch these practices,
- 48:36Speaker 2: those two guys just look to me like solid football players,
- 48:40Speaker 2: guys that can contribute and certainly can deserve to be
- 48:43Speaker 2: on teams. But where do they fit on this football team?
- 48:46Speaker 2: I'm still not entirely sure. How do we feel about
- 48:49Speaker 2: their debt behind to vide behind Splaine. This is again
- 48:53Speaker 2: a question that we get all the time, you know,
- 48:55Speaker 2: asking questions about that linebacker position.
- 48:58Speaker 1: I wouldn't sleep on Jack Gibbons, you know. I don't
- 49:01Speaker 1: think he's Splaine, but he's somebody that people in Tennessee
- 49:04Speaker 1: were high on, kind of surprised that he was let go,
- 49:07Speaker 1: and I think he's in the opportunities he's gotten. He's
- 49:10Speaker 1: looked good. And Marte Mapu in the picture as well.
- 49:12Speaker 1: It's not their deepest position. I don't know that it's
- 49:15Speaker 1: a spot that I'm super worried about, because again, Tavai
- 49:18Speaker 1: wasn't like if Spalaine goes down right, and if you
- 49:23Speaker 1: or Gibbons right, you're trying to plug somebody into that role.
- 49:26Speaker 1: That's not a role you're plugging to Vay into that
- 49:30Speaker 1: ideal because he plays it the game completely differently. So
- 49:33Speaker 1: could they use another linebacker maybe, Like I wouldn't be
- 49:36Speaker 1: against that, and that might be a guy you can
- 49:38Speaker 1: just get on waivers or something. Yeah, you know, down
- 49:40Speaker 1: the road. But I don't know that I felt any
- 49:44Speaker 1: better or worse like depending on Tavai. He's in a
- 49:46Speaker 1: different category to me.
- 49:48Speaker 2: Yeah, I either way, I feel is not any worse
- 49:52Speaker 2: really about it either, because I don't think that they're
- 49:55Speaker 2: gonna play a lot more than two linebackers at a time.
- 49:57Speaker 2: And then when I say linebackers, I mean like true
- 49:59Speaker 2: off linebackers, like their base defense will have two off
- 50:03Speaker 2: ball linebackers. But I don't envision them playing very many
- 50:07Speaker 2: linebackers to begin with. On third down. I don't know
- 50:10Speaker 2: if they're going to be playing any of those guys. Well, so,
- 50:13Speaker 2: and I mean, you know, I'm sure situationally third and short.
- 50:16Speaker 1: So that's where I think. Well, no, I say third
- 50:18Speaker 1: and long like Christianellis we saw last year after in coverage.
- 50:21Speaker 2: Right, But is Christianelli's gonna play or are they gonna
- 50:24Speaker 2: do like you know, are they going to add another
- 50:26Speaker 2: pass rusher onto the field and still are pure pass.
- 50:28Speaker 1: Well, the other thing I was gonna say is they
- 50:30Speaker 1: can you know, they have safeties that can do some
- 50:32Speaker 1: linebacker type and Peppers and and Doug It.
- 50:35Speaker 2: I just I just wonder if nowadays, when you look
- 50:39Speaker 2: at a third down defense, and I'm talking about like
- 50:43Speaker 2: third and medium to long, you know, third and five plus,
- 50:46Speaker 2: a lot of defenses play like five rushers and then
- 50:50Speaker 2: six defensive backs and there's like really no middle there's
- 50:54Speaker 2: no middle layer to that. If they run the football,
- 50:58Speaker 2: then the safeties are just coming from depth and filling
- 51:01Speaker 2: like their linebackers. They really have done away with the
- 51:06Speaker 2: mid range there of a defense, right, like that doesn't
- 51:09Speaker 2: really exist anymore. It's five guys up up top, you know,
- 51:12Speaker 2: across the line of scrimmage to rush the quarterback, and
- 51:15Speaker 2: then it's the six guys in the back end. And
- 51:17Speaker 2: so at that point, I don't even know if Splain
- 51:19Speaker 2: is gonna necessarily be on the field a ton on
- 51:22Speaker 2: like third and eight, right, Like, I just I don't
- 51:24Speaker 2: know if that's necessarily going to be where he plays.
- 51:27Speaker 1: So I.
- 51:28Speaker 2: In my mind, I'm saying they need like three linebackers.
- 51:32Speaker 2: They need three linebackers for the season that can have
- 51:34Speaker 2: that they feel comfortable playing at a high volume because
- 51:37Speaker 2: someone will get hurt, right Unfortunately, that's just the nature
- 51:40Speaker 2: of the beast. Well, is that Splain, Gibbons and Ellis?
- 51:43Speaker 2: It could be, It could be. I think there's a
- 51:46Speaker 2: really good possibility that it is, or you know, maybe
- 51:49Speaker 2: it's ends up being a spline to vay in Ellis
- 51:53Speaker 2: and then Gibbons is kind of like the fourth guy,
- 51:55Speaker 2: that's an a special teamer slash, you know, depth piece.
- 51:57Speaker 1: But that's more what I think Tavay is. Yeah, because
- 52:00Speaker 1: if you want again, he's not a one for one
- 52:03Speaker 1: swap with Spline or even Ellis where Gibbons is. Yeah.
- 52:07Speaker 2: Fair enough, all right, a couple more items on Ota
- 52:10Speaker 2: s UH here and then we'll open up the phone
- 52:12Speaker 2: lines eight five five Pats five hundred is the phone
- 52:15Speaker 2: number if you want to jump in. We have a
- 52:16Speaker 2: bunch of emails coming into UH that we'll get to
- 52:19Speaker 2: here starting in a second. But I gotta ask you,
- 52:22Speaker 2: Alex June fourth, are we no not yet? Are we
- 52:27Speaker 2: buying or selling our chism stock right now? Are you
- 52:30Speaker 2: buying this efton chism hype?
- 52:32Speaker 1: So I don't think I'm as hyped as most people.
- 52:35Speaker 1: Here's our Matt with eftin chism and this is a
- 52:38Speaker 1: very this is very much not a we have a
- 52:40Speaker 1: show to do today take.
- 52:41Speaker 2: But we talked about this last year.
- 52:43Speaker 1: You're gonna be You're gonna sit on the fence. We've
- 52:45Speaker 1: been before, right, it's not sitting on the fence. It's
- 52:46Speaker 1: not quite sitting on the fence. Okay, I don't think
- 52:49Speaker 1: is a Udfa or is anybody really you can win
- 52:51Speaker 1: a roster spot in June. I just don't think you
- 52:54Speaker 1: can do it. Football's played in pads, are not in pats.
- 52:57Speaker 1: That being said me, and you have seen what it
- 53:00Speaker 1: takes for Udfa, even at that position, to make a
- 53:03Speaker 1: roster push and make the team. We saw that Jacobe
- 53:05Speaker 1: Myers obviously do it. Even other guys who made the
- 53:08Speaker 1: team and maybe didn't have as much of an impact,
- 53:09Speaker 1: a guy like Christian Wilkerson. Right, we've seen what it takes.
- 53:13Speaker 1: And ft and Chisholm right now is laying as good
- 53:17Speaker 1: of a foundation as he could possibly lay to go
- 53:21Speaker 1: into camp with the stage set for him to win
- 53:25Speaker 1: a roster spot. The two things that stand out to
- 53:28Speaker 1: me about e Fton Chishlm Number one, really good hands catcher. Yeah,
- 53:32Speaker 1: And as much as the Patriots have struggled assimilating wide
- 53:36Speaker 1: receivers into Josh McDaniel's offense stortally, not just in the
- 53:39Speaker 1: draft free agents, right, there's not and the ones that
- 53:42Speaker 1: have hit, there's not necessarily a ton of carryover between them.
- 53:45Speaker 1: It's not all one similar guy, but one thing they
- 53:48Speaker 1: all have in common. From Dion Branch to us welcome
- 53:51Speaker 1: to Julian Edelman, even Rob Gronkowski, they're all really good
- 53:55Speaker 1: hands catchers. What that means is you can go outside
- 53:57Speaker 1: your frame and get the football. You don't need to
- 54:00Speaker 1: bring it in, you don't need to cradle it off
- 54:02Speaker 1: your body. It's just two hands. Like remember those old
- 54:05Speaker 1: NFL Fantasy football commercials. I think it's Chris Cooley like
- 54:09Speaker 1: punching through the wall to catch the football, right, Like,
- 54:12Speaker 1: that's what you think of when you think of hands catching.
- 54:14Speaker 1: I once heard a coach say, like, catching the football
- 54:16Speaker 1: is not a passive activity.
- 54:18Speaker 2: It is an active activity.
- 54:19Speaker 1: You attack the football, you go out, you go get
- 54:22Speaker 1: the football. And part of this too, is another layer
- 54:24Speaker 1: to this. And this was a big Randy Moss thing
- 54:26Speaker 1: and Rob Gronkowski thing. Not to put Chisselm in the
- 54:28Speaker 1: same category.
- 54:29Speaker 2: As those guys, That's what I heard.
- 54:33Speaker 1: Late hands right, you don't want as soon as the
- 54:35Speaker 1: ball is thrown, go like this because the cornerback's covering you,
- 54:38Speaker 1: especially in man where he's not looking at the quarterback.
- 54:41Speaker 1: All right, hands are up, balls coming. You watch some
- 54:43Speaker 1: like prime Randy Moss. The last second, it's just just
- 54:46Speaker 1: real quick with the hands, put the ball out and
- 54:48Speaker 1: he's been doing that so one strong hands catcher, which
- 54:51Speaker 1: generally works with Josh McDaniels too. It's been unbelievable the
- 54:54Speaker 1: top of the route, his ability to set up, stack
- 54:56Speaker 1: the defender, break off in an open space, it's consistent,
- 54:58Speaker 1: it's clean every single time. So I love that he's
- 55:01Speaker 1: doing all that. I got to see it in pads
- 55:04Speaker 1: because what happens when the corner and I know, I
- 55:06Speaker 1: legal contact blah blah blah, but there's aways a little
- 55:08Speaker 1: pushing and shoving right at the top of the route.
- 55:10Speaker 1: What happens in the corner can get his hands on
- 55:12Speaker 1: him at the top of the route. What happens when
- 55:14Speaker 1: he's getting off the line of scrimmage? What about how
- 55:16Speaker 1: good are his hands through contact? Right? So I'm not
- 55:19Speaker 1: I've seen people be like Efton Chisholm and Roster Locke territory.
- 55:22Speaker 1: Yet no, he's not. You can't be. Nobody, no Udfa
- 55:27Speaker 1: can be at this point of the year. It's just
- 55:29Speaker 1: not realistic. But he's doing everything he needs to do
- 55:32Speaker 1: at this point that when we get to August and
- 55:35Speaker 1: the pads come on, like, we're not just going to
- 55:38Speaker 1: be learning about He's set the stage. He's built the foundation.
- 55:42Speaker 1: So we always talk.
- 55:43Speaker 2: About Maurus Harris as the number one poster child for this.
- 55:47Speaker 2: I'm gonna give Marius Harris a break here today and
- 55:49Speaker 2: talk about somebody else.
- 55:50Speaker 1: Well, it's a little different because Maurice Harris was more
- 55:53Speaker 1: straight line speed.
- 55:54Speaker 2: And he was also more of a veteran player. But
- 55:57Speaker 2: the guy that I wanted to bring up today was actually,
- 56:00Speaker 2: do you remember, I want to say it was twenty two.
- 56:04Speaker 2: Trade Nixon had a really nice spring. Yes, Trade Nixon
- 56:07Speaker 2: had a really like I had a really nice spring.
- 56:09Speaker 2: Trade Nixon was a seventh round pick by the Patriots.
- 56:11Speaker 2: I don't believe so I think he retired. Actually, oh
- 56:13Speaker 2: that's right. Yeah, he's a seventh round pick by the Patriots.
- 56:16Speaker 2: He was Ernie Adams's pick. It was there his last draft.
- 56:19Speaker 2: He drafted Trade Nixon. Bill gave him the pick, drafted
- 56:25Speaker 2: Trade Nixon, and Trade Nixon was a speedy, shifty UH
- 56:30Speaker 2: receiver inside receiver mostly, and he had that skill set
- 56:35Speaker 2: and for the spring portion, UH he was lighting it
- 56:39Speaker 2: up with Mac Jones. Like him and mac Jones had
- 56:42Speaker 2: a rapport. It looked like that was going places. And
- 56:46Speaker 2: then to your point, the pads came on in August
- 56:48Speaker 2: and we never heard of trade Nixon again.
- 56:50Speaker 1: It just completely dropped off.
- 56:52Speaker 2: He also battled injuries throughout his career, nagging things that
- 56:55Speaker 2: just kept on derailing his development and to that, and
- 57:00Speaker 2: you know, we've just built up scar tissue over time
- 57:03Speaker 2: here with these types of examples with our time on
- 57:06Speaker 2: the beat of knowing when you just can't overreact to
- 57:09Speaker 2: guys this time of year. But I would say you
- 57:12Speaker 2: especially can't overreact to guys this time of year that
- 57:14Speaker 2: are really nifty route runners, like guys that really know
- 57:18Speaker 2: how to separate, because you can't get your hands on people,
- 57:20Speaker 2: you can't be physical. There's no threat of the safety
- 57:24Speaker 2: coming down in clocking. You're not that they do that
- 57:26Speaker 2: in practice necessarily anyways, but there's just not a whole
- 57:29Speaker 2: lot of resistance and physicality to the game right now,
- 57:33Speaker 2: so we have to see it when the pads come on.
- 57:35Speaker 2: That being said, the one thing I am buying with
- 57:37Speaker 2: Defton Chisholm that makes me think that he has a
- 57:40Speaker 2: clear path to making this roster is that he just
- 57:44Speaker 2: fits the mold, like he fits the suit of what
- 57:47Speaker 2: Josh McDaniels looks for in that slot position, and you
- 57:50Speaker 2: mentioned the hands catching and attacking the football. That's a
- 57:53Speaker 2: big part of it. Another big part of it is
- 57:55Speaker 2: you know, finding those pockets of space and being able
- 57:58Speaker 2: to navigate high traffic areas over the middle of the
- 58:00Speaker 2: field and just knowing when to settle, knowing when to
- 58:03Speaker 2: sit against zone, knowing how to break off option routes.
- 58:06Speaker 2: And when you start talking about the slot position and McDaniels'
- 58:10Speaker 2: offense over the years, one of the things that always
- 58:13Speaker 2: is important too is that it's a very high IQ
- 58:16Speaker 2: position because you have a lot of options to your routes.
- 58:19Speaker 2: Every route you run is going to have conversions or
- 58:22Speaker 2: options where if it's zone, you're doing this. If it's man,
- 58:25Speaker 2: you're breaking away. If it's zone, you're sitting here. If
- 58:28Speaker 2: it's too high zone, you're sitting there. If it's one
- 58:30Speaker 2: high zone, you're sitting here. Like there's all sorts of
- 58:33Speaker 2: different intricacies to playing that specific position. We all know
- 58:37Speaker 2: probably about the Juke series with host juke and all
- 58:40Speaker 2: that kind of stuff, where it's different breaks and different
- 58:44Speaker 2: sort of things based off the coverage. It's not a
- 58:48Speaker 2: coincidence that Julian Edelman, former quarterback Kobe Meyer's former quarterback.
- 58:53Speaker 2: Like the guys that we've seen recently succeed at a
- 58:56Speaker 2: high level in that role have all had backgrounds as
- 58:59Speaker 2: for quarterbacks. Now, Efton Chisholm doesn't have that, But when
- 59:03Speaker 2: I watch ft and Chisholm play in here so far
- 59:05Speaker 2: in the spring, he has that high IQ or that
- 59:09Speaker 2: innate ability to just find those areas of the field.
- 59:14Speaker 1: So it's not I'm not so much.
- 59:17Speaker 2: Over the top about e ft and Chislm individually in
- 59:21Speaker 2: a vacuum, but I am seeing, Okay, this is a
- 59:25Speaker 2: Josh McDaniel slot receiver. And we talked about in the
- 59:28Speaker 2: draft whether it was like Xavier or Estreppo or any
- 59:32Speaker 2: of those types of guys. This was just kind of
- 59:34Speaker 2: like small school Xavier restrict. Yeah, like that's what they
- 59:38Speaker 2: kind of did here with Chishm, and that archetype has
- 59:41Speaker 2: a role on this team.
- 59:42Speaker 1: So I again, it's not to say, you know, we're
- 59:45Speaker 1: kind of coming in here and really talking down on
- 59:47Speaker 1: the kid.
- 59:48Speaker 2: It's not to say we don't think he can do it.
- 59:49Speaker 1: Like I still put together, like I'll do a ross
- 59:52Speaker 1: projection after many camp next week, I'm probably gonna have
- 59:54Speaker 1: him one yeah, like I think he's on pace to
- 59:56Speaker 1: do it, and the things we've seen him do he's
- 1:00:00Speaker 1: done well again finding space, creating separation at the top
- 1:00:03Speaker 1: of the route, catching the football.
- 1:00:05Speaker 2: But that's not.
- 1:00:07Speaker 1: There are more things he's going to need to prove
- 1:00:09Speaker 1: he can do in order to make the team. It's
- 1:00:12Speaker 1: not that he's failed at them, they just haven't come
- 1:00:14Speaker 1: up yet, because that's how this process works. So he's
- 1:00:17Speaker 1: just got to check a couple more boxes that he
- 1:00:19Speaker 1: hasn't even gotten to, and he's on track to make
- 1:00:22Speaker 1: the team. But to say he's you know, a roster
- 1:00:24Speaker 1: lock right now or trending in that direction, it's just
- 1:00:27Speaker 1: entirely too early.
- 1:00:28Speaker 2: So if you're I know it's stereotypical to talk about
- 1:00:33Speaker 2: Ethan Chisholm in this way, But there's a reason why
- 1:00:36Speaker 2: every single time a Ryley McCarron or An Austin Carr
- 1:00:41Speaker 2: or any Braxon Barrios, when those guys start came through
- 1:00:44Speaker 2: here in the Dynasty years and the Brady years, there's
- 1:00:47Speaker 2: a reason why everybody latched onto those guys as there's
- 1:00:50Speaker 2: a possibility this player can make the roster. And I
- 1:00:53Speaker 2: say that they you know, I feel the same way
- 1:00:55Speaker 2: about Chisholm, Like, I think that Chisholm just has that
- 1:00:57Speaker 2: mold and has that skill set that just fits the role.
- 1:01:01Speaker 2: And Drake May in college and a lot of people
- 1:01:05Speaker 2: have brought this up with Pop Douglas, and I think
- 1:01:06Speaker 2: it is relevant with Pop as well. His most productive
- 1:01:10Speaker 2: receiver in college was Josh Down Yeah, and that's a smaller,
- 1:01:14Speaker 2: shifty slot receiver. I still think and I talked about
- 1:01:17Speaker 2: this yesterday when I was on with Felger and Maz like,
- 1:01:20Speaker 2: people need to stop putting Pop Douglas and Efton Chism
- 1:01:23Speaker 2: together as if it's one of the other, because it's
- 1:01:25Speaker 2: not there. They play differently. There are different types of
- 1:01:29Speaker 2: and you know.
- 1:01:30Speaker 1: Felger's take yesterday was Chisholm on Pop off, to which
- 1:01:35Speaker 1: I'd say, if Pop's not making the team, and we
- 1:01:39Speaker 1: sort of talked to those fourth the running backs, they
- 1:01:42Speaker 1: can't afford to give up on that speed. Not for
- 1:01:44Speaker 1: guy with that with the ability that he has, it's
- 1:01:47Speaker 1: already not a fast room. And if you move on
- 1:01:49Speaker 1: from Pop Douglas. So I look at it like Chisholm
- 1:01:52Speaker 1: is more than that Edelman Jacobe Myers mold.
- 1:01:55Speaker 2: He's built more like Edelman.
- 1:01:57Speaker 1: I think his skill set is probably closer to Myers,
- 1:02:00Speaker 1: but he's just not as big Pop Douglas. To me,
- 1:02:02Speaker 1: I'll keep going back to this is Danny Amandola. Pop
- 1:02:05Speaker 1: Douglass is built like a slot receiver, but he plays
- 1:02:08Speaker 1: more vertically, and he has more of that straight line
- 1:02:11Speaker 1: speed that allows you to keep a defense honest vertically
- 1:02:15Speaker 1: rather than a guy like Edelman or Myers who stretches
- 1:02:18Speaker 1: you horizontally. They can both be on the roster. Frankly,
- 1:02:21Speaker 1: they can both be on the field at the same time.
- 1:02:22Speaker 1: Not all the time because he can't be that small
- 1:02:25Speaker 1: all the time, but there is absolutely.
- 1:02:27Speaker 2: Room for both of them. I don't think it's in
- 1:02:29Speaker 2: one or the other.
- 1:02:29Speaker 1: I don't really think they're comparable players if it had been,
- 1:02:33Speaker 1: if they had drafted Jalen Noel. He's more comfortable to
- 1:02:36Speaker 1: Pop Douglass to me, because he has more of that
- 1:02:38Speaker 1: game breaking speed. He's faster, he's more a vertical player.
- 1:02:43Speaker 1: I don't think Chisholm and Pop there's some similarities, not
- 1:02:46Speaker 1: entirely different, but I think to say, you know, oh, well,
- 1:02:49Speaker 1: they have these receivers guys like Pop Douglas and Fton Chisholm.
- 1:02:55Speaker 2: Those are two different players.
- 1:02:57Speaker 1: That's like saying, yeah, they have a bunch of running backs,
- 1:03:00Speaker 1: guys like Sony Michelle and James White, both good players.
- 1:03:04Speaker 1: Sony Michelle and James White are not the same, Like
- 1:03:06Speaker 1: they don't do the same thing. Yeah, there's some overlap
- 1:03:09Speaker 1: between pop and chism, but I don't think it's nearly
- 1:03:10Speaker 1: as much as people are making it. I agree, And
- 1:03:13Speaker 1: I don't know about Ammon Doola, Like when I watch
- 1:03:15Speaker 1: pop though, I don't know if he's ever going to
- 1:03:18Speaker 1: get to the volume that Dion Branch got to.
- 1:03:20Speaker 2: Yeah, but but that's sort of the type of I
- 1:03:23Speaker 2: thought Kyle Williams movements. I just feel like, I don't know.
- 1:03:28Speaker 2: I I feel like Kyle Williams is more what I
- 1:03:31Speaker 2: am starting to see with him is more Brandon cos
- 1:03:34Speaker 2: that's on Branch. But like that that's the way that
- 1:03:37Speaker 2: I just look at pop just because of the the
- 1:03:40Speaker 2: the quick twitch ability, Like Dion Branch was also very
- 1:03:43Speaker 2: quick and has that like those explosive shifty movements, and
- 1:03:46Speaker 2: that Pop Douglas has. Pop Douglas also, I think, you know,
- 1:03:49Speaker 2: to your point about them being different, Pop Douglas can
- 1:03:52Speaker 2: be a scheme touch guy like Pop Douglas can be
- 1:03:54Speaker 2: a screen merchant. He can be a jet sweep guy.
- 1:03:58Speaker 2: You know, you can get him the ball near the
- 1:04:00Speaker 2: line of scrimmage in some space and he can run
- 1:04:02Speaker 2: with the football. That's not eft Chism's game. Aft Chism
- 1:04:05Speaker 2: does not have juice like that. After the catch, He's
- 1:04:08Speaker 2: going to get caught from behind. He's not going to
- 1:04:10Speaker 2: stretch the field horizontally on a jet sweep.
- 1:04:12Speaker 1: Or something like that.
- 1:04:13Speaker 2: Efton Chishm is going to be that Julian Edelman Wes
- 1:04:17Speaker 2: Welker type of slot receiver that's just going to you know,
- 1:04:20Speaker 2: eat up middle of the field coverage, right Like, that's
- 1:04:22Speaker 2: gonna be at Chism if he succeeds, if he pans out.
- 1:04:25Speaker 2: So they are different in that sense. Pop Douglas is
- 1:04:28Speaker 2: much more explosive than Afton Chism. Is The difference to
- 1:04:31Speaker 2: me though with Pop compared deft and Chishlm is that
- 1:04:34Speaker 2: I think Efton Chisholm has a little bit more of
- 1:04:37Speaker 2: feel an instinct. He's a better out runner of the game, yea,
- 1:04:41Speaker 2: not just the physical technique but the mental size.
- 1:04:44Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:04:44Speaker 2: Like Pop Douglas is a great man to man beater
- 1:04:47Speaker 2: because he's just he's just runs away. Hell yeah, right,
- 1:04:49Speaker 2: and it's just hard to cover him in a phone booth.
- 1:04:52Speaker 2: But he's not necessarily the best at like fueling out
- 1:04:56Speaker 2: coverage and understanding where to sit and understanding where the
- 1:04:58Speaker 2: voids are and finding the space. If he developed that,
- 1:05:02Speaker 2: then I think Pop Douglas could be like in a
- 1:05:04Speaker 2: thousand yard receiver in this offense. I don't know if
- 1:05:06Speaker 2: he's ever going to develop that now that we're going
- 1:05:08Speaker 2: into year three, I don't know if that exists in
- 1:05:10Speaker 2: his We'll see how they use him, we'll see how
- 1:05:13Speaker 2: they work with him.
- 1:05:13Speaker 1: But again I just I don't think him And like
- 1:05:16Speaker 1: the guy Chisholm is really competing with for me is
- 1:05:20Speaker 1: Jaylen Polk, Like that's the similar and again.
- 1:05:23Speaker 2: Paul Kendrick Bourne those types of things.
- 1:05:26Speaker 1: But I think Polk especially because again that's that Polk
- 1:05:29Speaker 1: got all the comps to Myers, right, that's the guy
- 1:05:31Speaker 1: that isn't necessarily fast, but is going to get open
- 1:05:35Speaker 1: at the sticks. And then again what Polk was supposed
- 1:05:38Speaker 1: to be not what he was last year, but we
- 1:05:39Speaker 1: talked about him in the draft. He's gonna get open
- 1:05:41Speaker 1: at the sticks. He's gonna find space in the defense,
- 1:05:44Speaker 1: He's gonna sit down and his own things like that.
- 1:05:46Speaker 1: That's the guy that plays more like Chisholm in theory
- 1:05:49Speaker 1: is Polk. That really, to me is the big competition.
- 1:05:52Speaker 1: Those two guys are more redundant than Chisholm and Pop.
- 1:05:55Speaker 1: Chishm and Pop are just they have similar builds.
- 1:05:58Speaker 2: Yeah, the word that I've heard Joshua Daniel's using the
- 1:06:00Speaker 2: past is like he brings energy, like he puts energy
- 1:06:03Speaker 2: into the offense. Pop Douglas puts energy like. That's what
- 1:06:07Speaker 2: he does now efton Chisholm, I'm not sure if that
- 1:06:10Speaker 2: he's gonna do that right, but he's also I think
- 1:06:12Speaker 2: he's gonna have a little bit more a feel for
- 1:06:15Speaker 2: the the for coverage and for the game in general.
- 1:06:18Speaker 2: All Right, moving on now to another thing that's just
- 1:06:21Speaker 2: really on my radar with his team, and then I'll
- 1:06:23Speaker 2: give you a second to talk about the kickers before.
- 1:06:25Speaker 1: We wrap this up.
- 1:06:26Speaker 2: But this is and I know we've been pretty offense heavy,
- 1:06:29Speaker 2: but this wasn't really a big It wasn't a big
- 1:06:32Speaker 2: defense practice, to be honest with you. But the one
- 1:06:35Speaker 2: thing that's really squarely on the radar for me right
- 1:06:40Speaker 2: now is what's going on at left guard. I really
- 1:06:44Speaker 2: feel like they're searching for a left guard. I'm not
- 1:06:47Speaker 2: saying there is a guy, isn't a guy on the
- 1:06:49Speaker 2: roster that necessarily I'm not saying that they're they're in
- 1:06:52Speaker 2: trouble with that spot yet. But you have a guy
- 1:06:57Speaker 2: like Wes Schweitzer, who we've talked about in the past,
- 1:07:01Speaker 2: kind of like a Michael Jordan from last year, right
- 1:07:03Speaker 2: where it's a veteran guy. He started some games in
- 1:07:06Speaker 2: the league, but he's not necessarily you don't necessarily feel
- 1:07:10Speaker 2: awesome if he's the starter. Let's just put it too
- 1:07:12Speaker 2: that way, you don't necessarily feel awesome. Then you have
- 1:07:15Speaker 2: some younger guys that either haven't lived up to it,
- 1:07:19Speaker 2: like Cole Strange and he was asked point plant the
- 1:07:21Speaker 2: other day frankly, you just haven't lived up to being
- 1:07:23Speaker 2: a first round pick. And he kind of knows it right,
- 1:07:25Speaker 2: you know, he didn't shy away from it. And then
- 1:07:28Speaker 2: you have you know, citysow Leyden Robinson, who we haven't
- 1:07:32Speaker 2: really seen as much of getting those opportunities with the
- 1:07:35Speaker 2: top group. I knew Tyrese Robinson did last week when
- 1:07:37Speaker 2: we were out there, but whatever reason, and I don't
- 1:07:41Speaker 2: know what the reason is, but it doesn't feel like
- 1:07:43Speaker 2: Leyden Robinson is necessarily catching on. Just based off the
- 1:07:48Speaker 2: reps and what we're seeing out at practice, it doesn't
- 1:07:51Speaker 2: seem like he's really the in that mix yet for
- 1:07:55Speaker 2: that spot. If it's Schweitzer, I feel I don't feel
- 1:08:00Speaker 2: great about that in terms of, you know, just overall
- 1:08:04Speaker 2: getting your best five out there and top end talent
- 1:08:07Speaker 2: type of thing. But maybe he could just kind of
- 1:08:10Speaker 2: be at least a steady presence there.
- 1:08:13Speaker 1: For George. We did this a couple of weeks ago,
- 1:08:15Speaker 1: but he's got to be better than Michael Jordan's I
- 1:08:17Speaker 1: know he did, but can he be Teddy Carris but
- 1:08:20Speaker 1: the guy that started with ten games in the last
- 1:08:22Speaker 1: three years. So no, no the answer, But I'm not
- 1:08:25Speaker 1: saying it's right. But I didn't we to have this debate,
- 1:08:28Speaker 1: like a couple.
- 1:08:28Speaker 2: Of weeks ago about him being Michael Jordan.
- 1:08:31Speaker 1: Be in it and don't rule out, don't rule him out.
- 1:08:33Speaker 1: I think it's wide open. I think they're gonna let
- 1:08:35Speaker 1: it be settled when the pads come on. I think
- 1:08:38Speaker 1: that's what it's gonna come down to. And this goes
- 1:08:40Speaker 1: back to us not seeing all the practices. Right, We've
- 1:08:42Speaker 1: seen West Schweitzer, we've seen Cole Strange, We've seen I think,
- 1:08:47Speaker 1: did city still have a left guard day or was
- 1:08:49Speaker 1: here right I saw?
- 1:08:50Speaker 2: I don't think so.
- 1:08:51Speaker 1: We saw somebody else. We saw Robinson as he was.
- 1:08:54Speaker 1: He wasn't there the other day. But like who there's
- 1:08:56Speaker 1: probably a Laydon Robinson day behind closed doors, you know,
- 1:08:59Speaker 1: just clods into a day behind closed doors. So a
- 1:09:01Speaker 1: day behind closed doors, who knows. We'll see a little
- 1:09:04Speaker 1: bit next week because we'll be out there all three days.
- 1:09:06Speaker 1: But like I think it's gonna be when the pads
- 1:09:08Speaker 1: come on, it's wide open. Somebody will have to get
- 1:09:10Speaker 1: the first snap, just because somebody's got to go yeah,
- 1:09:13Speaker 1: and maybe that'll be Schweitzer, just based on what we've seen.
- 1:09:15Speaker 1: But lightly, lightly, lightly penciling that in, I don't think.
- 1:09:20Speaker 1: I think they're far from decided.
- 1:09:22Speaker 2: It's it's something that's worth talking about. We talked about
- 1:09:25Speaker 2: on this show. I know for a fact, signing a
- 1:09:28Speaker 2: veteran left guard that was maybe a little bit more
- 1:09:30Speaker 2: proven and a little bit more stabled in West Schweitzer
- 1:09:34Speaker 2: in free agency or possibly drafting somebody high to play
- 1:09:38Speaker 2: left guard. You know, we talked at nauseum about guys
- 1:09:40Speaker 2: like Wyatt Milam and stuff like that.
- 1:09:42Speaker 1: It sounds like they might have thought about it. It
- 1:09:43Speaker 1: reports he had fallen thirty eight. Yeah, so you know
- 1:09:48Speaker 1: those types of guys. We still haven't seen Jared Wilson
- 1:09:51Speaker 1: participate in full yet, so maybe Jared Wilson eventually gets in.
- 1:09:55Speaker 1: And I think that's the reason why I keep going
- 1:09:59Speaker 1: back to Jared Wilson potentially playing some guard as a
- 1:10:01Speaker 1: rookie is because I just don't feel great about that
- 1:10:04Speaker 1: spot right now, and if he's the best for it,
- 1:10:06Speaker 1: then by all means, let him play. The big concern
- 1:10:11Speaker 1: is not just that it's a potential weak link. It's
- 1:10:13Speaker 1: also the guy that's going to be playing next to
- 1:10:15Speaker 1: Will Campbell. So like Will Campbell is going to be
- 1:10:17Speaker 1: a rookie and he's going to be out there, and
- 1:10:20Speaker 1: if you don't feel great about who's that left guard,
- 1:10:23Speaker 1: you know that that's a weaker side of the line
- 1:10:26Speaker 1: in pass protection, especially that potentially that's a concern. You know,
- 1:10:29Speaker 1: Garrett Bradbury, I'm not sure Garrett brad what Garrett.
- 1:10:33Speaker 2: Bradbury has left yet. You know, is he going to
- 1:10:36Speaker 2: be a high end center like he was a couple
- 1:10:39Speaker 2: of years ago, or is he going to be the
- 1:10:40Speaker 2: guy he was last year in Minnesota, which is a
- 1:10:42Speaker 2: guy that was on the outside looking in for the Vikings.
- 1:10:45Speaker 2: They signed Ryan Kelly to move on from Garrett Bradbury.
- 1:10:48Speaker 2: So I wish I could sit here and say, and look,
- 1:10:52Speaker 2: I'm not trying to be alarmist. Certainly, it's June fourth.
- 1:10:55Speaker 2: We still haven't seen any of these guys in pat
- 1:10:57Speaker 2: so there's a long, long way to go here. But
- 1:11:00Speaker 2: I still feel like the offensive line, the only part
- 1:11:03Speaker 2: of the offensive line I feel one hundred percent good
- 1:11:05Speaker 2: about is the right side, Like and Morgan Moses, I
- 1:11:07Speaker 2: think are going to be a good right side. The
- 1:11:09Speaker 2: rest of it I think is still up in the air.
- 1:11:11Speaker 1: I mean, you have to feel kind of good about
- 1:11:13Speaker 1: Will Campbell. He's an unknown because he's.
- 1:11:15Speaker 2: A Rookieel good about Will Campbell and his future. Yeah,
- 1:11:19Speaker 2: Will camp rookie is going to have some bumps.
- 1:11:21Speaker 1: Now get what you're saying out well, and then it's
- 1:11:23Speaker 1: if Jared Wilson wins the starting job, left cards between
- 1:11:25Speaker 1: two rookies.
- 1:11:26Speaker 2: Right, and then I again, Brad that's fine, but it's
- 1:11:30Speaker 2: not that's a high end center.
- 1:11:31Speaker 1: It's a pressing thing, and it's not one of these
- 1:11:34Speaker 1: like they've had the last few years, some of these
- 1:11:37Speaker 1: and it's not unique to them, just the way these
- 1:11:38Speaker 1: practices work. But like the last few years they've had
- 1:11:41Speaker 1: some of these offensive line battles continue into the season. Yeah,
- 1:11:45Speaker 1: continue in a September. You really don't want to be
- 1:11:48Speaker 1: doing that next to a rookie with the second year quarterback.
- 1:11:50Speaker 2: Yeah, you really don't.
- 1:11:51Speaker 1: You didn't want to be doing with the rookie quarterback
- 1:11:53Speaker 1: last year. By the way, let me be clear, like
- 1:11:55Speaker 1: they screwed up last year too, I shouldn't say too.
- 1:11:57Speaker 1: They haven't screwed up yet this year. I won't punish
- 1:11:59Speaker 1: him for something done. But that's something you got to
- 1:12:02Speaker 1: know when you cut down the rosters, who you're starting
- 1:12:04Speaker 1: left card.
- 1:12:04Speaker 2: Is Yeah, it's definitely on my mind. Okay, uh, here's
- 1:12:08Speaker 2: your kicker minute. It was another good day for Andy
- 1:12:12Speaker 2: burgallis correct? Yeah he's rolling. Yeah, Yeah, he's rolling.
- 1:12:15Speaker 1: It looks good.
- 1:12:16Speaker 2: That's it.
- 1:12:16Speaker 1: I think they're gonna keep Parker Romo love it because
- 1:12:18Speaker 1: I think one they want to keep the pressure on
- 1:12:20Speaker 1: borgas the camp two. I think they're gonna want to
- 1:12:23Speaker 1: keep him on the practice squad as a backup, just
- 1:12:25Speaker 1: in case, more so injury than anything else. But Borgollis
- 1:12:30Speaker 1: is looking like a guy who was drafted, which is good.
- 1:12:32Speaker 2: So they haven't always had that. The last couple of
- 1:12:36Speaker 2: draft picks have not gone well. I won't bring up
- 1:12:37Speaker 2: the first one. A couple of even make the teams
- 1:12:39Speaker 2: all right, No, and then Chad Ryland, of course, you
- 1:12:42Speaker 2: know a couple of yearsly.
- 1:12:43Speaker 1: A good start. Yeah, he went good in camp and
- 1:12:46Speaker 1: then he fell off because he beat out Nick Folk.
- 1:12:48Speaker 2: It's not it's not. My point is it's not a
- 1:12:50Speaker 2: guarantee that it goes well, right.
- 1:12:52Speaker 1: And well, And it's not a guarantee goes well from this,
- 1:12:54Speaker 1: Like kicking so fickle, it's not guaranteed at any point.
- 1:12:56Speaker 1: But like so far, so good from Andy, borgallis not
- 1:12:59Speaker 1: not worried about anything.
- 1:13:00Speaker 2: Love it all right before we open it up, I
- 1:13:02Speaker 2: promise you will hear in a second, I just want
- 1:13:04Speaker 2: to talk a little bit about David Andrews's retirement ceremony.
- 1:13:07Speaker 2: Awesome ceremony on Monday afternoon after the open ota that
- 1:13:13Speaker 2: we've just talked about, and a couple of things. First
- 1:13:17Speaker 2: of all, I think that one of the coolest things
- 1:13:21Speaker 2: that we do is those video montages of all the
- 1:13:25Speaker 2: former teammates that ye come in and give a message
- 1:13:28Speaker 2: to David Andrews on his retirement from Brady Gronk Edelman
- 1:13:33Speaker 2: his offensive line like it hit me in the feels
- 1:13:35Speaker 2: a little bit, just a nostalgia Patriots fan.
- 1:13:37Speaker 1: Well, there are some deep poles in there too. Yeah,
- 1:13:39Speaker 1: we can get to those and explain them a little bit.
- 1:13:42Speaker 2: Nate Solder, Joe Toney, Shaq Mason, and I don't think
- 1:13:48Speaker 2: Sea Bascot in there. Marcus Cannon, So you know that
- 1:13:51Speaker 2: that was the line, right like that, like when they
- 1:13:54Speaker 2: were rolling and they were winning Super Bowls in Andrews'
- 1:13:57Speaker 2: career and you know, sixteen and eighteen, that was that
- 1:14:00Speaker 2: was mostly the group.
- 1:14:01Speaker 1: And really it's because Cannon no offense. Marcus Cannon, he
- 1:14:04Speaker 1: came in earlier.
- 1:14:05Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't know if did him and SeaBASS overlap
- 1:14:07Speaker 2: now I'm thinking about it.
- 1:14:08Speaker 1: I don't think they did.
- 1:14:09Speaker 2: I think Sebastian retired before David Andrews. David Andrews were
- 1:14:13Speaker 2: twenty fifteen, right Volmer, was they overlapped for oh?
- 1:14:18Speaker 1: They overlapped for two years, okay, but it was that
- 1:14:23Speaker 1: that interior of Shaq Mason, Joe Toney, David Andrews. They
- 1:14:28Speaker 1: all came in within like a year of each other,
- 1:14:31Speaker 1: and it was they all kind of went right into
- 1:14:33Speaker 1: starting roles and like that, that three man interior was
- 1:14:38Speaker 1: rock one of the best in football. While they were together,
- 1:14:41Speaker 1: one of the best in football. And all three brought
- 1:14:44Speaker 1: different things. Toney was just a technician and a great
- 1:14:48Speaker 1: athlete and just a high level player at left guard
- 1:14:51Speaker 1: that could do a bunch of different things. Shaq was
- 1:14:53Speaker 1: a bulldozer like he was you know, pulled shack Mason
- 1:14:56Speaker 1: through the hole was a staple play for them, and
- 1:14:58Speaker 1: he he was an absolutely elite run blocker in his prime.
- 1:15:02Speaker 2: David Andrews was a snarl. He was the attitude. Yeah,
- 1:15:05Speaker 2: he was the tone setter. They all brought it. I
- 1:15:09Speaker 2: was gonna say Drake may Tom Brady's shelf was kept
- 1:15:11Speaker 2: clean for for four or five years ago there with
- 1:15:15Speaker 2: that group. Like the it feel like up the middle
- 1:15:17Speaker 2: was never an issue. Even when Aaron Donald in the
- 1:15:20Speaker 2: Super Bowl, they're just you know, keeping him at bay
- 1:15:22Speaker 2: with those.
- 1:15:23Speaker 1: Is that Dante Scarnecki's masterpiece.
- 1:15:25Speaker 2: Probably, yeah, you know, it just was in general that
- 1:15:29Speaker 2: by the way. Yeah, Scar was there, which was very cool.
- 1:15:33Speaker 1: Uh.
- 1:15:33Speaker 2: Not in the red jacket though, which I I you know,
- 1:15:36Speaker 2: I would just walk around with that thing on.
- 1:15:38Speaker 1: He doesn't seem like that of guy.
- 1:15:39Speaker 2: No, that's what I would do. But yeah, like I
- 1:15:41Speaker 2: mentioned a bunch of different players in that video, James
- 1:15:44Speaker 2: White was in it, Doron Harmon, both mccordy's were in it.
- 1:15:47Speaker 2: Some of the deep cuts, so Jared Stidham was in it.
- 1:15:50Speaker 2: David Andrews and Jared Sidham are tight, really tight. Their
- 1:15:54Speaker 2: wives were really close as well when Jared Sidham was here,
- 1:15:58Speaker 2: So that one is playing by relationships. You know, that's
- 1:16:02Speaker 2: a good friend of David Andrews's. Aj Derby similar thing, great, Paul, Yeah,
- 1:16:06Speaker 2: aj Derby, Yeah, so I think to some people were
- 1:16:09Speaker 2: sitting there and like, how did aj Derby and Jared
- 1:16:11Speaker 2: sit him get in this video? So you know that
- 1:16:15Speaker 2: those are really good personal friends of David Andrews.
- 1:16:18Speaker 1: Yeah, and he said he lived with aj Derby. I
- 1:16:21Speaker 1: think their rookie year. Yeah, they were that same class
- 1:16:24Speaker 1: real quick aj Derby minute. Yeah, so he was here
- 1:16:29Speaker 1: the year that Brady was suspended. Jimmy got hurt in
- 1:16:34Speaker 1: that second game, right, and then Jacoby tears his thumb
- 1:16:37Speaker 1: and they have to go into that game. If I'm
- 1:16:40Speaker 1: remembering correctly, maybe it was a different game. They were
- 1:16:42Speaker 1: going into some game where they were super thin on quarterbacks.
- 1:16:45Speaker 1: AJ Derby was a college quarterback. Yeah, he was here
- 1:16:48Speaker 1: for those twenty sixteen Yeah. I was so convinced we're
- 1:16:50Speaker 1: going to see j Derby play quarterback for the poder Man,
- 1:16:52Speaker 1: even if it was just like a wrinkle trick play
- 1:16:55Speaker 1: something Josh drew up because again their quarterback, the one
- 1:16:58Speaker 1: quarterback on the roster. His throwing thumb didn't work. He
- 1:17:02Speaker 1: was a rookie, rookie fourth round pick, like you gotta
- 1:17:05Speaker 1: put a wrinkle in. I really thought we were gonna
- 1:17:07Speaker 1: see a J Derby play place now for the Patriots.
- 1:17:09Speaker 1: He hung around the league for a little bit. I
- 1:17:11Speaker 1: didn't really see Howny around as long as he did
- 1:17:12Speaker 1: good for him. Yeah, cool, cool moment. Always with that.
- 1:17:15Speaker 2: I just love not to get all weird, but I
- 1:17:17Speaker 2: love watching the player watching it like David Andrews like
- 1:17:21Speaker 2: watching it and just like huge smile on his face
- 1:17:24Speaker 2: the entire time, And that that was awesome. I'm sure
- 1:17:28Speaker 2: it feels great to hear that from all your teammates.
- 1:17:31Speaker 2: And then David Andrews just raw emotion from the jump
- 1:17:35Speaker 2: in his speech. The second he got up to the
- 1:17:37Speaker 2: podium and started trying to read the speech, he was
- 1:17:40Speaker 2: starting to break down already, and you just could see
- 1:17:42Speaker 2: and we knew this just being you know, fans following
- 1:17:46Speaker 2: his career from the outside, us being a little bit
- 1:17:48Speaker 2: on the inside and being able to talk to David
- 1:17:50Speaker 2: Andrews over the last handful of years. Football is everything
- 1:17:54Speaker 2: to that guy. You know, he's invested in the sport
- 1:17:58Speaker 2: and you could tell by his speech and just a
- 1:18:01Speaker 2: great a lot of great speech, you know, words in
- 1:18:04Speaker 2: his speech about you know, the sacrifices of not only
- 1:18:08Speaker 2: his family, but also just you know what the game
- 1:18:11Speaker 2: of football meant.
- 1:18:12Speaker 1: I loved that he thanked the game of football. Yeah,
- 1:18:15Speaker 1: I thought that was so cool. And you know, he
- 1:18:19Speaker 1: opened up talking about he wanted to express gratitude and
- 1:18:21Speaker 1: I think gratitude and reverence, yeah, for the game itself.
- 1:18:25Speaker 1: And I and this come for me, like I don't.
- 1:18:31Speaker 1: I wish I love football half as much as David
- 1:18:33Speaker 1: Andrews does. Like that football guy through and through. That's
- 1:18:38Speaker 1: it was awesome. It was awesome just to see and
- 1:18:41Speaker 1: it was great for him to get to thank so
- 1:18:42Speaker 1: many people that his whole family is everything. His parents
- 1:18:44Speaker 1: are there right, his wife's kids. Just thinking the sport itself.
- 1:18:50Speaker 1: I thought it was so cool.
- 1:18:51Speaker 2: Yeah, it was really cool. And his sons were there,
- 1:18:54Speaker 2: two young sons, And I think David Andrews would be
- 1:18:58Speaker 2: a great coach if he wanted to into coaching. He
- 1:19:01Speaker 2: could definitely coach an offensive line room someday if he
- 1:19:04Speaker 2: wanted to do that.
- 1:19:05Speaker 1: Now.
- 1:19:06Speaker 2: His son Ford and Worth are both like three under three.
- 1:19:11Speaker 2: The Worth is a baby, so I can totally understand
- 1:19:15Speaker 2: if he wants to live life with them for a
- 1:19:18Speaker 2: little while and not. He said he said that, Yeah,
- 1:19:20Speaker 2: he said he wasn't looking to get a coaching Yeah,
- 1:19:22Speaker 2: because coaching is an eighty ninety hour a week maybe
- 1:19:25Speaker 2: more during the season type of job, and and that
- 1:19:29Speaker 2: you know, takes you away from your family even more
- 1:19:31Speaker 2: than playing does in a lot of ways. So I
- 1:19:34Speaker 2: don't know if that's necessarily on in his future because
- 1:19:37Speaker 2: of that, but I would venture to say that just
- 1:19:40Speaker 2: based off of what he said the other day and
- 1:19:42Speaker 2: also what he said in the past when it's been
- 1:19:45Speaker 2: kind of clear that retirement might be in the thought
- 1:19:47Speaker 2: process towards the ends of some of these recent seasons.
- 1:19:50Speaker 2: He loves the game too much not be around. He's
- 1:19:53Speaker 2: gonna be around the game somehow.
- 1:19:55Speaker 1: He's doing the podcast, maybe around media wise, but David
- 1:19:59Speaker 1: Andrews at some point wouldn't surprise me.
- 1:20:01Speaker 2: A local media presence, not too different from our friend
- 1:20:07Speaker 2: Zolac or something like that, is not out of the question,
- 1:20:10Speaker 2: I don't think for him.
- 1:20:11Speaker 1: So, you know, him being around in that he was good.
- 1:20:13Speaker 1: So he right after he was like two weeks I
- 1:20:16Speaker 1: think after he was cut, he did an hour with
- 1:20:19Speaker 1: that with Zolac and Purtrade. He was good. He was good.
- 1:20:23Speaker 2: Yeah, I could definitely see that for him. And that's
- 1:20:25Speaker 2: obviously way less time consuming than coaching, So you know,
- 1:20:28Speaker 2: he could definitely do something like that. But a really
- 1:20:31Speaker 2: cool moment. It's one of the players and that we
- 1:20:33Speaker 2: actually got to spend a lot of time covering. Yeah,
- 1:20:37Speaker 2: some of these guys we weren't around for as long.
- 1:20:39Speaker 2: But David Andrews started in fifteen, I started in eighteen,
- 1:20:44Speaker 2: seventeen eighteen.
- 1:20:45Speaker 1: Him and Cardona where we start in eighteen, Him and
- 1:20:48Speaker 1: Cardona were the last two guys that we like didn't cover. Yeah, right,
- 1:20:54Speaker 1: Like I watched David Andrews the last game. I so
- 1:21:00Speaker 1: I like tangentially covered the team when celing As was
- 1:21:03Speaker 1: starting up in twenty seventeen, Like yeah, I would, you know,
- 1:21:06Speaker 1: write about the games and did podcasts and stuff, but
- 1:21:09Speaker 1: I was doing it from home. It was a side thing.
- 1:21:11Speaker 1: Like I wasn't credentially, I wasn't down here whatever. The
- 1:21:13Speaker 1: last game, like I watched not covering the game is
- 1:21:15Speaker 1: twenty eight three. Yeah, so the only two guys in
- 1:21:17Speaker 1: that game, or the last two guys in that game
- 1:21:19Speaker 1: that we're still here, we're Andrews in Cardona. So we've
- 1:21:22Speaker 1: now seen since we've been you know, down here every day,
- 1:21:25Speaker 1: we've now seen the entire locker room turn over. I
- 1:21:27Speaker 1: don't know if that's a good thing, are bad. It
- 1:21:29Speaker 1: makes me uncomfortable, it makes me feel old. Well, I
- 1:21:32Speaker 1: don't hate I don't love that. I'm like because we
- 1:21:35Speaker 1: start I was twenty four year, twenty five our first year.
- 1:21:37Speaker 1: So like guys are getting drafted and we're like, you know,
- 1:21:40Speaker 1: they're same age as us, Like there's some relatability and
- 1:21:44Speaker 1: we're older than what seventy eighty percent of the roster
- 1:21:47Speaker 1: now at least especially now they got they're getting so
- 1:21:50Speaker 1: much younger here, yeah these last couple of years. Yeah,
- 1:21:52Speaker 1: so you're still getting older for some reason.
- 1:21:55Speaker 2: I would put David Andrews on a personal in terms
- 1:21:59Speaker 2: of guys that I just enjoyed covering the most, not
- 1:22:02Speaker 2: necessarily like my Matt Rushmore are best players or but
- 1:22:06Speaker 2: the guys that I deserved that I really liked covering
- 1:22:10Speaker 2: the most. I put David Andrews on my personal Mount
- 1:22:13Speaker 2: rush More up there with Devin mccordy, with Matthew Slater.
- 1:22:17Speaker 2: I think those you know, I know, Matt rushfires four,
- 1:22:19Speaker 2: but I think that those three kind of stand alone
- 1:22:22Speaker 2: for me as just perfect Patriots, Like just perfect on
- 1:22:26Speaker 2: and off the field.
- 1:22:27Speaker 1: I'll throw in there too. And this was one of
- 1:22:29Speaker 1: the first guys we ever talked to was Dante high Tower.
- 1:22:32Speaker 2: Yeah, he was great too.
- 1:22:33Speaker 1: Do you remember so we he had that corner locker
- 1:22:36Speaker 1: right all the way in the back drif the locker,
- 1:22:40Speaker 1: you know, big imposing guy, and you wanted to ask
- 1:22:43Speaker 1: him something. Is when I had the camera and we
- 1:22:44Speaker 1: go back and he like he's he definitely knew how
- 1:22:49Speaker 1: how much we didn't know what we were doing. Yeah,
- 1:22:51Speaker 1: he was like, you get one question, yeah, something like that.
- 1:22:54Speaker 1: He's like, you can talk to me once a week
- 1:22:55Speaker 1: or something. Yeah, it was like it was funny. He
- 1:22:57Speaker 1: was always really good to us. It's just kind of funny.
- 1:22:59Speaker 2: Was that's a good you know, yeah, given us a
- 1:23:01Speaker 2: little rookie moment. Yeah, he would do that, and he
- 1:23:03Speaker 2: was he was kidding, but he's also not kidding.
- 1:23:06Speaker 1: But like we didn't know because we never So he
- 1:23:08Speaker 1: tell me.
- 1:23:08Speaker 2: That I could ask him one question once a week
- 1:23:11Speaker 2: and it had to be good and it has to
- 1:23:12Speaker 2: be good, and I wouldn't answer. I remember one time
- 1:23:15Speaker 2: I tried to ask him another question a couple of
- 1:23:17Speaker 2: days later, and he remembered. He said, You've already asked
- 1:23:20Speaker 2: me your question this week. I'm not answering. He was kidding,
- 1:23:23Speaker 2: but yeah, he's he's definitely was. Yeah, he's definitely on
- 1:23:27Speaker 2: that list as well. So really cool moments for David Andrews.
- 1:23:30Speaker 2: The last thing I wanted to say about that, there's
- 1:23:33Speaker 2: a big lockjam. It's probably you know, he needs to
- 1:23:36Speaker 2: wait four years as it is, but it's probably gonna
- 1:23:38Speaker 2: take even longer. He's gonna wear a red jacket.
- 1:23:40Speaker 1: At some point, Skark can wear the red jacket when
- 1:23:43Speaker 1: he gives David Andrews.
- 1:23:44Speaker 2: Yeah, I have a really good feeling that that's going
- 1:23:47Speaker 2: to happen.
- 1:23:48Speaker 1: You know, Edward been going in this year.
- 1:23:50Speaker 2: Gotta get Gronkowski in, Gotta get Vinetarian.
- 1:23:54Speaker 1: Uh.
- 1:23:54Speaker 2: You know, then there obviously will be other guys like
- 1:23:56Speaker 2: Devin mccordy and Slater and uh, players like that from
- 1:23:59Speaker 2: this sideration. High Tower himself definitely needs to get in. Yeah,
- 1:24:03Speaker 2: those types of guys, so might it might not be.
- 1:24:05Speaker 1: We've done this before, We've done a year. High on
- 1:24:09Speaker 1: Welk or I'm high on Moss, Yeah, the guy who
- 1:24:11Speaker 1: was here a little bit longer. You put Steph Gilmore in, No,
- 1:24:15Speaker 1: I wouldn't if you're not going to put Randy Moss in.
- 1:24:17Speaker 1: I don't think you can say that Randy should be in.
- 1:24:20Speaker 2: Yeah, but I don't think so.
- 1:24:22Speaker 1: I mean, I I.
- 1:24:23Speaker 2: Think there's an argument more so than like Revis. I've
- 1:24:25Speaker 2: definitely yeah, I mean, Gilmore had the pass break up
- 1:24:29Speaker 2: in seventeen in the KFC Championship Game. He had the
- 1:24:33Speaker 2: interception of the seal of Super Bowl in eighteen and
- 1:24:35Speaker 2: had great year in eighteen and then defensive, so that
- 1:24:39Speaker 2: I mean, that's a good resume. It just was short lived,
- 1:24:41Speaker 2: you know, but yeah, but he packed a lot in there. Yeah,
- 1:24:44Speaker 2: it's a good resume. And maybe at some point if
- 1:24:47Speaker 2: we're a decade, yeah, maybe down the road right to
- 1:24:50Speaker 2: run out of guys a little bit.
- 1:24:51Speaker 1: Whose next corner you're putting in?
- 1:24:54Speaker 2: Next corner I'm putting in? Yeah, it's a good question,
- 1:24:57Speaker 2: cause they've had a lot of good corners.
- 1:24:58Speaker 1: But oddly enough, like you're probably not putting a key
- 1:25:01Speaker 1: to Leeban and I love the key to when he
- 1:25:04Speaker 1: was I think we all did. Yeah. Uh, Malcolm Butler
- 1:25:06Speaker 1: is an interesting one. Yeah, he does have arguably what
- 1:25:09Speaker 1: one of the five biggest plays in franchise history.
- 1:25:11Speaker 2: Maybe the biggest play in franchise history.
- 1:25:13Speaker 1: I still think some of those Vanitary kicks.
- 1:25:15Speaker 2: I mean, you could definitely make the case.
- 1:25:17Speaker 1: You can make the case. I almost said biggest. It's
- 1:25:19Speaker 1: like he was here for a couple and he was good.
- 1:25:20Speaker 1: Besides that, Vanitary's.
- 1:25:22Speaker 2: Kick in thirty six is probably the biggest. Is the
- 1:25:25Speaker 2: first Super Bowl? I think it's the Snowball. Well, the
- 1:25:27Speaker 2: snow Bowl is the harder kick.
- 1:25:28Speaker 1: All right, just for the iconic moment, but like Butler's
- 1:25:31Speaker 1: right there on the fence, Gilmore, I don't think Reeves
- 1:25:34Speaker 1: is getting in. That was just one lay. That is
- 1:25:37Speaker 1: too short. But like you think about some of the
- 1:25:39Speaker 1: great corners they've had, and like none of these guys.
- 1:25:44Speaker 1: Maybe it's maybe it's Christian Zaliz.
- 1:25:46Speaker 2: Yeah, maybe hopefully. So you know, Edelman's going in this year,
- 1:25:51Speaker 2: Gronk obviously has to go in, probably Gronk, Edelman, Vanity.
- 1:25:57Speaker 2: Then you have James White, Yeah, Matthew Slater or Devin mccordy,
- 1:26:02Speaker 2: then Matthew.
- 1:26:03Speaker 1: So that that'll be the It's almost like groups of threes,
- 1:26:05Speaker 1: right because Edelman, Gronk, Invententario retired around as well, and
- 1:26:09Speaker 1: territired from the NFL around the same time. Yeah, Slater, White,
- 1:26:13Speaker 1: mccordy all retired around the same time. Yeah, and then
- 1:26:17Speaker 1: you'll get into like David Andrews.
- 1:26:21Speaker 2: Yeah, and then you start I mean, then you start
- 1:26:23Speaker 2: to get into the territory and maybe we're just forgetting
- 1:26:26Speaker 2: somebody off the top.
- 1:26:27Speaker 1: Well there's Bill, but Bill will be his own thing.
- 1:26:29Speaker 1: I'll pause it for your like, and then but then
- 1:26:32Speaker 1: you're getting into the territory of it. Fitting out maybe
- 1:26:35Speaker 1: a little bit, and you either going back to the
- 1:26:39Speaker 1: Dynasty years and like somebody that was overlooked, like a
- 1:26:41Speaker 1: Wes Welker maybe or something like that.
- 1:26:43Speaker 2: You have to put Gostowski in.
- 1:26:45Speaker 1: He is the franchises all time leading score, he won
- 1:26:49Speaker 1: multiple Super Bowls. He was here for a long time,
- 1:26:52Speaker 1: not before Venitarian, not for some of those other guys.
- 1:26:54Speaker 1: Doesn't have the clutch ness his his He had some
- 1:27:00Speaker 1: big kicks early in his career at the end, I'm
- 1:27:02Speaker 1: not in. Also, the video of him being in the
- 1:27:05Speaker 1: stands drinking spiked hot chocolate in a snow dog legendary. Yeah,
- 1:27:09Speaker 1: I'm not trying to crap on the guy, like cool
- 1:27:11Speaker 1: guy and and good patriot. I just I don't know
- 1:27:16Speaker 1: you're gonna down blame because he special teams. He put
- 1:27:17Speaker 1: Joe cardonaan No, of course not. You're gonna put Joe
- 1:27:21Speaker 1: Cardona in the patriotsoll soon.
- 1:27:23Speaker 2: But what do you mean, what are we doing Gustavski?
- 1:27:27Speaker 1: He's the franchises all time leading If that doesn't mean something.
- 1:27:30Speaker 2: Stick to the Goskowski take that.
- 1:27:32Speaker 1: That doesn't mean yeah, I know, I was just yeah,
- 1:27:34Speaker 1: if being a franchise all time score doesn't mean something.
- 1:27:37Speaker 1: I don't know what we're doing.
- 1:27:38Speaker 2: So like if we you know, and I just you know,
- 1:27:41Speaker 2: we're in the second hour here in June, so just
- 1:27:44Speaker 2: what we do.
- 1:27:44Speaker 1: I think people like this stuff, if the chat likes it.
- 1:27:46Speaker 1: Somebody asked me to put a Sante Samuel.
- 1:27:48Speaker 2: In No so the guy that I was thinking about
- 1:27:50Speaker 2: because I'm trying to think of guys, Oh, I know.
- 1:27:52Speaker 1: Who the next corner is, Okay, I was only thinking
- 1:27:55Speaker 1: boundary corners is Jonathan Jones.
- 1:27:56Speaker 2: Oh yeah, he could be in there, Jonathan Jones. So
- 1:27:58Speaker 2: I'm trying to think of guys that maybe came in
- 1:28:00Speaker 2: like Dynasty one point zero. Yeah, that we're overlooking because
- 1:28:03Speaker 2: they just it's a log jam and there's a lot
- 1:28:05Speaker 2: of guys and what it starts thin out Antoine Smith,
- 1:28:08Speaker 2: I think Corey Dillon has has a case Corey Dillon.
- 1:28:11Speaker 2: So Corey Dillon would be a good one. It was
- 1:28:13Speaker 2: like two or three years, but like he has doesn't
- 1:28:16Speaker 2: he have the single season rushing record for the franchise.
- 1:28:18Speaker 1: I want to say those guys from the sixties has it.
- 1:28:20Speaker 1: He might have it.
- 1:28:20Speaker 2: I'll pull it up, like oh, three or four, he
- 1:28:22Speaker 2: had like sixteen hundred yards didn't.
- 1:28:24Speaker 1: He Yeah, you're right, he does. It's it's him, Curtis Martin,
- 1:28:28Speaker 1: Jim Nance, Steven Ridley is fourth.
- 1:28:31Speaker 2: So that again, this is what you know ten years
- 1:28:35Speaker 2: from now when it starts to thin out. Yeah, but
- 1:28:37Speaker 2: once it starts to thin out and you start to
- 1:28:38Speaker 2: talk about some of these guys that you wouldn't consider
- 1:28:41Speaker 2: over Julian Edelman or Adam vine Terio or Rob Gronkowski,
- 1:28:45Speaker 2: but you might consider on a weaker valid I feel
- 1:28:48Speaker 2: like a guy like Corey Dillon just because of the peak,
- 1:28:50Speaker 2: so of how good it was. Well that that's kind
- 1:28:53Speaker 2: of my argument with Gilmour or Moss.
- 1:28:55Speaker 1: Yeah, well those guys and guys. The thing that's interesting
- 1:28:57Speaker 1: with Dylan, we know that they use this as an
- 1:29:02Speaker 1: opportunity to kind improp guys up for Canton. Yeah, and
- 1:29:05Speaker 1: I don't know how many ballots Dylan has left, so
- 1:29:08Speaker 1: maybe the.
- 1:29:08Speaker 2: Timeline doesn't work out.
- 1:29:10Speaker 1: But if you look at the comparable numbers he statistically
- 1:29:16Speaker 1: him there's actually three former Patriots enter on this list.
- 1:29:20Speaker 1: Oddly enough, him, Steven Jackson and Fred Jackson are like
- 1:29:24Speaker 1: the three most productive running backs in NFL history that
- 1:29:27Speaker 1: are not in And look, somebody has to be the
- 1:29:30Speaker 1: best player that's not in the Hall of Fame. I
- 1:29:31Speaker 1: think it was Jim Plunkett, right for years, was like
- 1:29:34Speaker 1: the best player that wasn't in, So somebody asked to
- 1:29:36Speaker 1: wear that distinction.
- 1:29:37Speaker 2: Corey Dillon is right there on.
- 1:29:39Speaker 1: The short list of the best running backs who are
- 1:29:41Speaker 1: not in, who are eligible, right whatever. But like you know,
- 1:29:45Speaker 1: if they ever really wanted to make that push, that
- 1:29:48Speaker 1: would be a way to do it. Yeah, there is
- 1:29:50Speaker 1: another player from that era that should be maybe not
- 1:29:52Speaker 1: the Patriots Hall, but Larry Centers should be a hall.
- 1:29:57Speaker 1: Ridiculous Larry Centers is not in Pro Football Hall of Fame.
- 1:29:59Speaker 2: Insane, ridiculous that Stanley Morgan is not in the pit.
- 1:30:02Speaker 1: Stanley Morgan is a good Stanley Morgan's the Patriots off
- 1:30:05Speaker 1: not in ProFootball, He's in the Patriots.
- 1:30:07Speaker 2: Yeah yeah, so yeah, no, that that.
- 1:30:10Speaker 1: I think, like, I think it's minimum five hundred catches.
- 1:30:13Speaker 1: I think he's like the all time leader in yards perception.
- 1:30:15Speaker 1: I believe that five hundred. That's true.
- 1:30:18Speaker 2: It's a it's an interesting conversation. Not it's an interesting
- 1:30:21Speaker 2: conversation to begin with the Patriots All Fame, but it's
- 1:30:23Speaker 2: also really interesting more interesting to me when we start
- 1:30:27Speaker 2: talking about, Okay, ten years from now, post Dynasty's obviously
- 1:30:31Speaker 2: been a little bit of a lull here, So going
- 1:30:34Speaker 2: back and maybe revisiting Mary Dillon, revisiting a Logan Mankins,
- 1:30:40Speaker 2: Logan Mankins, I should definitely be in at some point,
- 1:30:43Speaker 2: like those guys are all also, you know, Logan you're
- 1:30:46Speaker 2: gonna have We just talked about that interior. Are you
- 1:30:49Speaker 2: putting Joe Tune in? Maybe you're put in Jack Mason.
- 1:30:55Speaker 2: I'm an offensive line guy, so I'm the wrong way.
- 1:30:58Speaker 2: I was gonna go Nate Solder next.
- 1:31:00Speaker 1: I don't think so.
- 1:31:01Speaker 2: But maybe Tony two needs at least a h and
- 1:31:06Speaker 2: I don't mean any disrespectful to those other two, but
- 1:31:08Speaker 2: like too needs at least a good enough player.
- 1:31:10Speaker 1: Well, so here's justifying.
- 1:31:11Speaker 2: I just don't know if he has like the Patriot accolades.
- 1:31:14Speaker 1: But he's gonna be in the Profoleball of Fame. He's
- 1:31:15Speaker 1: probably gonna be first ballot Pro Football. I don't know
- 1:31:17Speaker 1: about that. It's really hard to get in as offensive line,
- 1:31:20Speaker 1: especially Joe Toney. It is wrong if Joe Toney is
- 1:31:23Speaker 1: not a first ballot Pro Football of Fame. I think
- 1:31:25Speaker 1: he'll get into the pro football game. I don't second ballot.
- 1:31:28Speaker 1: He's a top two guard of his errate. It's him
- 1:31:29Speaker 1: and Quentin Nelson. Is anybody else on that list? Brandon Sheriff,
- 1:31:34Speaker 1: Zach Martin, aren't those guys like kind of the era before?
- 1:31:37Speaker 1: Aren't a little older?
- 1:31:38Speaker 2: Maybe Zach Martin is the best offensive lineman I've ever seen. Okay, well,
- 1:31:42Speaker 2: Joe Toney should be first ballot, all of him.
- 1:31:44Speaker 1: I'll say that a guy you drafted that when multiple
- 1:31:47Speaker 1: Super Bowls here that is in the Pro Football Hall
- 1:31:50Speaker 1: of Fame should probably be in your team hall of Fame.
- 1:31:54Speaker 1: I compared to like Haynes, Like Mike Haynes is probably
- 1:31:57Speaker 1: and I don't know entirely like is Mike Haynes. I
- 1:31:59Speaker 1: think is a lot of more is a raider than patriot, right,
- 1:32:01Speaker 1: but he's great patriot. He's a great patriot and he
- 1:32:04Speaker 1: and I think he is in the Patriots Hall of Fame.
- 1:32:05Speaker 1: Right he should be, I would assume, so I would
- 1:32:08Speaker 1: kind of put him. And this is meet Mi Canes
- 1:32:10Speaker 1: played before was alive. So maybe I'm a little bit
- 1:32:12Speaker 1: off here, but that's just my thought.
- 1:32:15Speaker 2: So I didn't u last thing. I will take some
- 1:32:18Speaker 2: of these phone calls. Yesterday I got to meet Steve
- 1:32:20Speaker 2: Nelson for the first time, which which was really cool.
- 1:32:23Speaker 2: It was kind of like a fan boy moment. And
- 1:32:25Speaker 2: I know, I you know, I'm young, and I didn't
- 1:32:27Speaker 2: Mines isn't the Patriots. I didn't get to see him play. Yeah,
- 1:32:30Speaker 2: you know, we weren't born yet and stuff. But it's
- 1:32:32Speaker 2: still kind of cool to meet one of those guys.
- 1:32:34Speaker 2: And Duce is working on something on the eighty five
- 1:32:37Speaker 2: Patriots team and that's gonna be a lot of fun.
- 1:32:41Speaker 2: And you know, I thought about this and I was
- 1:32:43Speaker 2: glad Duce was already kind of working on this project
- 1:32:46Speaker 2: and kind of beat me to it. But you know,
- 1:32:48Speaker 2: I got into Celtics City, as I'm sure a lot
- 1:32:50Speaker 2: of Celtics fans did. The Patriots don't have the success
- 1:32:54Speaker 2: in their history like the Celtics too, obviously with all
- 1:32:57Speaker 2: the championships that the Celtics have won. But to me,
- 1:33:01Speaker 2: there's not enough. And I and I hope people uh,
- 1:33:03Speaker 2: you know, watching or listen, I think, listen to to
- 1:33:06Speaker 2: Douce his things so that we can keep doing it.
- 1:33:08Speaker 2: And you know, the proof is in the in the
- 1:33:10Speaker 2: putting with the numbers, right to back it up, because
- 1:33:13Speaker 2: there were some intermittently really good pockets of Patriots history.
- 1:33:17Speaker 2: I mean that's seventy six team, seventy six, eighty five,
- 1:33:20Speaker 2: obviously the ninety six team.
- 1:33:21Speaker 1: Basically like every prior to the dynasty, like once every
- 1:33:24Speaker 1: ten years, they would have a really good team.
- 1:33:26Speaker 2: Yeah, and and a really good group of players. You know,
- 1:33:28Speaker 2: we're talking to Stanley mork and Mike Haynes, John Hannah,
- 1:33:32Speaker 2: Steve Nelson. You know, those guys could play man like.
- 1:33:35Speaker 2: Those are really good football players. And you know, obviously
- 1:33:39Speaker 2: Tip you know as well. So hopefully I think it
- 1:33:42Speaker 2: would be serving the fan base in a lot of
- 1:33:45Speaker 2: ways on that team too, right, Yeah, serving the fan
- 1:33:48Speaker 2: base in a lot of ways, to educate a lot
- 1:33:51Speaker 2: of the younger fans about those teams, because in a
- 1:33:54Speaker 2: lot of you know, a lot of the time you
- 1:33:56Speaker 2: hear about the Patriots history and it's looked down upon,
- 1:33:59Speaker 2: like all they were like the laughing stock of the
- 1:34:00Speaker 2: league or something like, you know, exaggerated like that. But
- 1:34:03Speaker 2: they had some really good individual players. They had some
- 1:34:06Speaker 2: really good pockets and really good promising teams that now
- 1:34:11Speaker 2: that we're out of the dynasty and we see how
- 1:34:13Speaker 2: hard it is to win, and we see how hard
- 1:34:15Speaker 2: it is to make a super Bowl and put together
- 1:34:18Speaker 2: teams that are winning playoff caliber teams. My guess is
- 1:34:21Speaker 2: that a lot of younger Patriots fans or fans that
- 1:34:24Speaker 2: latched on when the dynasty started will start to appreciate
- 1:34:28Speaker 2: that more because of how hard it's been the last
- 1:34:31Speaker 2: couple of years to watch this team. So a lot
- 1:34:33Speaker 2: of those guys like, we would definitely take an Andre
- 1:34:36Speaker 2: Tippett right about now, but also like we would love
- 1:34:39Speaker 2: to an eighty five season. Yeah, they got killed in
- 1:34:42Speaker 2: the Super Bowl by the Bears, but they made it
- 1:34:44Speaker 2: to a super Bowl Like that was a great accomplishment
- 1:34:47Speaker 2: and it should be celebrated. So I'm glad that Duce
- 1:34:49Speaker 2: is doing that. Was cool to meet Steve Nelson yesterday.
- 1:34:52Speaker 2: I totally forgot to do any read So I'm gonna
- 1:34:54Speaker 2: jump on that now. Based right here in New England,
- 1:34:58Speaker 2: brunt workwere makes work boots in apparel that are built
- 1:35:03Speaker 2: for the job site. Their gear is comfortable, durable and

- 1:35:14Speaker 2: you send it back save ten dollars on your first

- 1:35:21Speaker 2: or with coupon code p.
- 1:35:23Speaker 1: A T S.
- 1:35:25Speaker 2: Were you the one that told me that the workers
- 1:35:28Speaker 2: working on the practice facility or fans of the show, Yeah,
- 1:35:31Speaker 2: shout out to them.
- 1:35:31Speaker 1: So they're they're listeners. Ad A couple of them said
- 1:35:35Speaker 1: they enjoyed the show.
- 1:35:36Speaker 2: They're probably unfiltered listeners as well, so maybe we can
- 1:35:39Speaker 2: get them some some work boots from from front Workwear.
- 1:35:42Speaker 2: There you go, All right, let's get to the phones.
- 1:35:43Speaker 2: All right, I'm looking forward to this call because this
- 1:35:46Speaker 2: call yesterday got got uh some fireworks going on Patriots
- 1:35:50Speaker 2: on filters. So Christians in La, what's up?
- 1:35:52Speaker 3: Christian Evan Evan Evan see I owe you and Mia call.
- 1:36:00Speaker 4: And I'm mad enough to stand up in front of
- 1:36:03Speaker 4: Patriots World and say it. I got triggered when I
- 1:36:07Speaker 4: heard Kendrick Bourne's name and it's not you, it's got
- 1:36:10Speaker 4: Solac who I'm I'm I'm mad at so I had
- 1:36:15Speaker 4: a whole bunch of other stuff to talk about. I
- 1:36:16Speaker 4: just got so triggered by it that I went hard
- 1:36:18Speaker 4: at you, and I'm mad enough to apologize and say,
- 1:36:21Speaker 4: even though you are a Kendrick born homer, you're not
- 1:36:23Speaker 4: the main homer.
- 1:36:25Speaker 2: That's okay, Christian, you don't have to apologize, But I
- 1:36:28Speaker 2: do want to ask you, like, sincerely, you know, what
- 1:36:31Speaker 2: what do you like, what do you have against Kendrick Bourne?
- 1:36:35Speaker 1: Man?
- 1:36:35Speaker 2: Like, what's what's the problem here?
- 1:36:38Speaker 4: Yeah? Seriously, as a person, I don't know.
- 1:36:39Speaker 1: You know, no, no, I know it's not personal.
- 1:36:42Speaker 2: I just mean in terms of the football, yeah, And
- 1:36:45Speaker 2: in terms.
- 1:36:45Speaker 4: Of football, I get set up with players who have
- 1:36:49Speaker 4: this potential thing right that like, oh this guy, yeah,
- 1:36:52Speaker 4: he did this one time and he's got potential, and
- 1:36:55Speaker 4: we got to hang on to him because you know,
- 1:36:57Speaker 4: once his knee gets right or once he gets to
- 1:36:59Speaker 4: the right coaching. Lots of teams do that. I get it.
- 1:37:03Speaker 4: Kendrick Boyne is the guy on our team now that
- 1:37:05Speaker 4: we've been doing that with, and I think he does
- 1:37:08Speaker 4: have some value and we should use that value now
- 1:37:12Speaker 4: just you know, get rid of him, maybe get a
- 1:37:14Speaker 4: seventh round pick the next year or something. But I
- 1:37:16Speaker 4: don't think we should keep this thing of like, Okay, yeah,
- 1:37:19Speaker 4: he's got the potential. We need somebody, so let's just
- 1:37:21Speaker 4: keep this guy who's clearly overpaid and just hasn't really
- 1:37:25Speaker 4: done anything. Does that make sense?
- 1:37:27Speaker 2: Sure? Yeah? Absolutely, yeah. I think where we all stand
- 1:37:30Speaker 2: with Kendrick Bourne, you know, and I don't want to
- 1:37:32Speaker 2: be for Alex, but for me personally, I don't think
- 1:37:35Speaker 2: that Kendrick Bourne is a number one receiver by any means.
- 1:37:38Speaker 2: You know, we're talking about a guy that we just
- 1:37:40Speaker 2: think can be productive in that like number three receiver
- 1:37:43Speaker 2: role or number two receiver role. Potentially, you know, maybe
- 1:37:46Speaker 2: a little bit too high at number two, but maybe
- 1:37:48Speaker 2: he's a solid, complimentary receiver.
- 1:37:50Speaker 1: He's paid like it.
- 1:37:51Speaker 2: I think his base salaries like five million dollars this
- 1:37:53Speaker 2: year or.
- 1:37:53Speaker 1: Something like that. And look, I'm the first one ever,
- 1:37:57Speaker 1: you know this. I'm the first one to get annoyed
- 1:38:00Speaker 1: when people talk up a player on potential when we
- 1:38:02Speaker 1: did this this one time and blah blah. But there
- 1:38:04Speaker 1: are there is a reason that people look for that,
- 1:38:06Speaker 1: because it does happen. I think Kendrick Bourne is an
- 1:38:08Speaker 1: example where you know, there is a realistic line between
- 1:38:12Speaker 1: he had that great season and twenty one. Okay, then
- 1:38:14Speaker 1: he goes in the doghouse with Patrician twenty two, which
- 1:38:17Speaker 1: we know, maybe isn't the most dis qualifying thing based
- 1:38:19Speaker 1: on other team was run. That year comes out as
- 1:38:21Speaker 1: a great start to twenty three. Tears the ACL the
- 1:38:24Speaker 1: long history of guys maybe not being as good the
- 1:38:27Speaker 1: year after torna a SILS, two years removed, and here
- 1:38:29Speaker 1: we already's back with the coordinator.
- 1:38:31Speaker 2: He had the great season within twenty one.
- 1:38:32Speaker 1: I don't think it's exactly grasping of straws to say
- 1:38:34Speaker 1: there's more to Kendrick Bourne than we've seen the last
- 1:38:36Speaker 1: few years.
- 1:38:37Speaker 2: Is he going to be the number one receiver?
- 1:38:38Speaker 1: No? Probably not. They need complimentary guys too, because that
- 1:38:41Speaker 1: room's not very deep, and he's a guy that's proven
- 1:38:44Speaker 1: he can do it in this league to some extent,
- 1:38:45Speaker 1: and they don't have a lot of guys that can
- 1:38:47Speaker 1: that have done that.
- 1:38:48Speaker 4: Right, Yeah, yeah, we have, we have we have no
- 1:38:51Speaker 4: one that we can really count on. He's a five
- 1:38:53Speaker 4: million dollar possibly number three. Just say that to yourself
- 1:38:56Speaker 4: out loud. A five million dollars a year, possibly three? Ye,
- 1:39:00Speaker 4: number four.
- 1:39:01Speaker 2: Rather, it's about right, it's the going rate for it
- 1:39:04Speaker 2: at least.
- 1:39:04Speaker 1: Now what else do you got?
- 1:39:05Speaker 2: Christian?
- 1:39:07Speaker 4: That's that's really I just want to apologize you can
- 1:39:10Speaker 4: get back and right standings with my guys and go,
- 1:39:13Speaker 4: you know, have a good week and you guys love it, love.
- 1:39:16Speaker 1: The path you two.
- 1:39:17Speaker 2: Christian, no problem, You don't have to apologize. I love
- 1:39:19Speaker 2: the fire. I love it when people call in and
- 1:39:22Speaker 2: bring some passion to the phones. Not that anybody doesn't
- 1:39:25Speaker 2: do that, but I I liked the call yesterday, Christian,
- 1:39:28Speaker 2: no problem.
- 1:39:28Speaker 1: Max is in Vermont. What's up? Max?
- 1:39:32Speaker 3: Hey, guys, in question about the wide receiver room. It
- 1:39:37Speaker 3: seems like Diggs will probably play a lot of slot
- 1:39:40Speaker 3: reps and eleven personnel you know. To me, that means
- 1:39:43Speaker 3: Pop Douglas might feature, you know, more of the true
- 1:39:46Speaker 3: role player than an every down guy, you know, like
- 1:39:48Speaker 3: a wide receiver four type on third and ten. I'm
- 1:39:52Speaker 3: curious what you will see as the best version of
- 1:39:54Speaker 3: Pop's role on this team and if he projects more
- 1:39:58Speaker 3: as like a receiver for lost snapped out guy, you know,
- 1:40:02Speaker 3: could he be a trade candidate rather than guys like
- 1:40:05Speaker 3: Boody or Born you know who may be more likely
- 1:40:09Speaker 3: to see the field in love and personnel.
- 1:40:12Speaker 2: Yeah, thanks for the call.
- 1:40:13Speaker 1: Mass.
- 1:40:13Speaker 2: I think this is you know, it's a question that
- 1:40:15Speaker 2: seems to get picking up some steam with Pop Douglas.
- 1:40:18Speaker 2: I feel like that, you know, maybe he's not one
- 1:40:20Speaker 2: hundred percent secure here in terms of maybe it's trade
- 1:40:24Speaker 2: or whatever. I still am with you on this with Pop.
- 1:40:28Speaker 2: I mean, look, we I like Pop. We saw him
- 1:40:30Speaker 2: at the Shrine Bowl right before, yeah, before his draft.
- 1:40:33Speaker 2: I kind of felt like I was early on him then,
- 1:40:36Speaker 2: So he's kind of one of my guys. I was
- 1:40:38Speaker 2: really excited when they drafted him. I still think there's
- 1:40:40Speaker 2: a role for him. I don't know if he's ever
- 1:40:43Speaker 2: going to be a true high volume like this guy's
- 1:40:46Speaker 2: gonna catch eighty plus passes in a season consistently type
- 1:40:49Speaker 2: of player, but the way that he moves is different.
- 1:40:52Speaker 1: I still believe that.
- 1:40:53Speaker 2: I still think he's the most one of the more
- 1:40:55Speaker 2: explosive players they have on the team. I still think
- 1:40:57Speaker 2: that he's got that ability, like I said earlier, touches,
- 1:41:00Speaker 2: jet sweeps, motions, screens, things like that that he can
- 1:41:04Speaker 2: be impactful on. But maybe you know, to use a
- 1:41:06Speaker 2: comparison that from another team somewhat recently, I remember when
- 1:41:11Speaker 2: the Chiefs had Tyreek Kill and me Cole Harmon, and
- 1:41:14Speaker 2: tyreek Kill was the guy and me Cole Harmon was
- 1:41:16Speaker 2: kind of in the same mole, but sort of the
- 1:41:18Speaker 2: secondary guy right to that mix, Like maybe that's Pop
- 1:41:22Speaker 2: Douglas's future is like Kyle Williams is sort of not
- 1:41:25Speaker 2: necessarily Tyreek kill good, but like Kyle Williams or Stefan
- 1:41:29Speaker 2: Diggs or someone like that is truly the number one
- 1:41:32Speaker 2: option in the offense. And then Pop Douglas is just
- 1:41:35Speaker 2: a kind of energizer bunny. That's a secondary guy within
- 1:41:39Speaker 2: the framework that might be where he's best, like a
- 1:41:43Speaker 2: super sub receiver. I just might be his bet.
- 1:41:45Speaker 1: I don't think they can afford to part ways with speed,
- 1:41:48Speaker 1: not that position out right now.
- 1:41:50Speaker 2: I just don't think they can fair enough. All right,
- 1:41:52Speaker 2: let's get to some of these emails. This one is
- 1:41:55Speaker 2: from Jordan Patriots Nation is his thing, and that gave me.
- 1:42:01Speaker 2: I was like, oh, okay, I don't know what that is,
- 1:42:02Speaker 2: but it sounds interesting. Jordan from Ohio. He asks, uh,
- 1:42:06Speaker 2: give me your breakout player on offense and defense for
- 1:42:10Speaker 2: the Patriots. So offense first, you have a breakout player
- 1:42:13Speaker 2: for this season.
- 1:42:14Speaker 1: I mean, I think it has to be Drake made
- 1:42:15Speaker 1: by default, right, you need that year two jump for
- 1:42:17Speaker 1: them to take the leap. You know what, screw, I'll
- 1:42:20Speaker 1: just go with theme to day Pop Douglass. I think
- 1:42:22Speaker 1: it's gonna be a good fit in Josh McDaniels offense,
- 1:42:24Speaker 1: and uh I think we you know he improves on
- 1:42:27Speaker 1: last year.
- 1:42:28Speaker 2: Yeah, I hope it's Drake May. Like, if this is
- 1:42:30Speaker 2: headed in the right direction, it should be Drake May.
- 1:42:33Speaker 2: It's kind of not unfair, but just like, I don't
- 1:42:36Speaker 2: know if rookies really qualify for this sort of thing.
- 1:42:38Speaker 2: I think they do, so I think if I didn't
- 1:42:40Speaker 2: say Drake May, I'd have to say one of the
- 1:42:42Speaker 2: skilled players Henderson Henderson or or Kyle Williams. Yeah, what
- 1:42:46Speaker 2: about on defense?
- 1:42:48Speaker 1: A breakout player on defense? I'm gonna go with. I mean,
- 1:42:54Speaker 1: Pop does can't waite, that's litterally who I said last year?
- 1:42:57Speaker 1: You know what, I'm gonna go with Robert Splain. I
- 1:42:59Speaker 1: just think that signing kind of went under the radar
- 1:43:02Speaker 1: because they signed Milton Williams a few.
- 1:43:04Speaker 2: Hours later and all that. But I think people are
- 1:43:07Speaker 2: gonna be really impressed with Robert Splain.
- 1:43:08Speaker 1: Yeah, I agree.
- 1:43:09Speaker 2: I think the splaying is gonna be a hair on
- 1:43:11Speaker 2: fire type of guy that people are really gonna like.
- 1:43:13Speaker 2: Can I say, Keon White, like as Kean White already
- 1:43:15Speaker 2: broken out.
- 1:43:20Speaker 1: He's another level he can get to.
- 1:43:22Speaker 2: I wonder if there's another level that he can get
- 1:43:24Speaker 2: to as well. And I'm excited to see him in
- 1:43:27Speaker 2: this defense because I think this defense is going to
- 1:43:30Speaker 2: uh correct for his aggressiveness. Like it's not gonna be
- 1:43:33Speaker 2: aggressive without outside the scheme. It's gonna be aggressive inside
- 1:43:37Speaker 2: the scheme because they're gonna want him to be inherently aggressive,
- 1:43:40Speaker 2: and then other people are gonna be assigned to make
- 1:43:43Speaker 2: him right when he is over aggressive and he does
- 1:43:45Speaker 2: shoot a gap or he does come out of a
- 1:43:47Speaker 2: rush lane or something like that. So I I I
- 1:43:50Speaker 2: want to I think Keon White will have another level
- 1:43:53Speaker 2: because I think he's a better scheme fit within what
- 1:43:55Speaker 2: they're gonna do.
- 1:43:56Speaker 1: Now.
- 1:43:57Speaker 2: Uh, this question is from Emmer and he said, Evan,
- 1:44:01Speaker 2: were you the reporter who asked McDaniels yesterday about putting
- 1:44:04Speaker 2: more on Drake's plate at the line of scrimmage. I
- 1:44:07Speaker 2: was the reporter that asked him that question, actually, And
- 1:44:10Speaker 2: then he said, I know that has been a concern
- 1:44:12Speaker 2: of yours, and I'm curious to get your take on
- 1:44:14Speaker 2: McDaniel's saying it was overblown.
- 1:44:16Speaker 1: Yeah, he did say that.
- 1:44:18Speaker 2: In response to that question, I asked him, what is
- 1:44:21Speaker 2: the approach not necessarily about it being right around, but
- 1:44:24Speaker 2: what is the approach in terms of building up to it?
- 1:44:28Speaker 1: Right?
- 1:44:28Speaker 2: Like, you don't want to all of a sudden go
- 1:44:30Speaker 2: into a practice and think Drake May is going to
- 1:44:32Speaker 2: be Tom Brady and you're sixteen and like put everything
- 1:44:35Speaker 2: on his plate? What to build up to? You know,
- 1:44:37Speaker 2: what's the build up to it. The two things that
- 1:44:40Speaker 2: McDaniels said that stood out in his answer. One, Yeah,
- 1:44:43Speaker 2: he did say that he thought it was kind of
- 1:44:44Speaker 2: an overblown talking point about his offense and about this offense,
- 1:44:49Speaker 2: I've said that someone would have to do it, whether
- 1:44:52Speaker 2: it was the center or it was the quarterback. It's
- 1:44:55Speaker 2: going to be on somebody's plate to make the calls, right,
- 1:44:57Speaker 2: So they're gonna have to teach somebody how to do it. Now,
- 1:45:00Speaker 2: I would counter with center, it's probably a little bit easier. Uh,
- 1:45:04Speaker 2: there's maybe a little bit less on your plate than
- 1:45:06Speaker 2: that court of not maybe there is a lot less
- 1:45:08Speaker 2: on your plate than that quarterback, but not here nor there.
- 1:45:11Speaker 2: The other thing that he said that I thought was
- 1:45:13Speaker 2: interesting was that he feels like Drake May has kind
- 1:45:16Speaker 2: of already got it, like he's grasped it quickly and
- 1:45:19Speaker 2: is learning it quickly, and he feels pretty comfortable with
- 1:45:22Speaker 2: where he's at with that. So that was me though.
- 1:45:25Speaker 2: I asked that question, how do how do you feel
- 1:45:27Speaker 2: about that whole thing? Am I making too much out
- 1:45:29Speaker 2: of it? I mean, it's factor, It's a fact. I
- 1:45:32Speaker 2: think it's still early.
- 1:45:33Speaker 1: Yeah, but it's a factor. Yeah, I agree. I actually fine.
- 1:45:37Speaker 1: I asked Ashton Grant's same question.
- 1:45:39Speaker 2: What did he say?
- 1:45:40Speaker 1: Uh, pretty much same thing. McDaniel said, Yeah, overblown. Well
- 1:45:44Speaker 1: the second part about it, he's picking it up and
- 1:45:46Speaker 1: it's not getting the wraps and blah blah blah. Yeah, okay,
- 1:45:48Speaker 1: all right. Uh.
- 1:45:49Speaker 2: Logistical question here from Connor from Saint Paul, Minnesota, and
- 1:45:53Speaker 2: he was wondering if the joint practices in the Twin
- 1:45:57Speaker 2: Cities will be open to the public. And the answer,
- 1:46:00Speaker 2: as far as I know, and this is not I'm
- 1:46:02Speaker 2: not saying that I know for a fact by any means,
- 1:46:04Speaker 2: but just based off experience, I would think, yes, those
- 1:46:08Speaker 2: practices have always in my experience, those have always been
- 1:46:12Speaker 2: open to the public.
- 1:46:13Speaker 1: I would assume it's However, the Vikings, I don't know
- 1:46:14Speaker 1: how the Vikings do training camp. I would assume it'start
- 1:46:16Speaker 1: with the Vikings user do training camp for the fans
- 1:46:18Speaker 1: my because I know some plate like here it's free, right,
- 1:46:21Speaker 1: some places you have to actually get a ticket or whatever.
- 1:46:23Speaker 2: Oh yeah, we're entered like a lottery in Buffalo or whatever.
- 1:46:26Speaker 2: I again, I have no idea the defenditive answer to
- 1:46:29Speaker 2: that question. But I've been told in the past that
- 1:46:33Speaker 2: joint practices are considered training camp and because of that,
- 1:46:37Speaker 2: it's always open to the public. So usually that that's
- 1:46:41Speaker 2: been the case. We had a great was it last
- 1:46:44Speaker 2: year we were it was two years ago.
- 1:46:45Speaker 1: We were in green Bay.
- 1:46:46Speaker 2: Those joint practices in Green Bay were awesome because they
- 1:46:49Speaker 2: have a great facility right across the street from lambeau Field,
- 1:46:53Speaker 2: and it's like it's almost like a high school stadium,
- 1:46:57Speaker 2: Like there's there's bleachers and everything, and there's a field
- 1:47:00Speaker 2: in the middle. It's literally like a high school football stadium.
- 1:47:03Speaker 2: And so it was like a raucous crowd, like it
- 1:47:06Speaker 2: was like hostile. You could feel that there was like
- 1:47:09Speaker 2: some hostility towards the Patriots, and uh, it is pretty cool.
- 1:47:14Speaker 1: So that that was very cool. All right.
- 1:47:16Speaker 2: Uh, here's an email from Jeremiah, who I think is
- 1:47:19Speaker 2: on your side on the Gazkowski debate. H Alex so
- 1:47:23Speaker 2: Satan Kaszkowski shouldn't be in the Patriots all fame, dude
- 1:47:26Speaker 2: to not have memory kicks like Vinetaria. Understand, but statistically
- 1:47:29Speaker 2: Gazkowski was the best kicker for the Patriots. Yeah, that's true.
- 1:47:32Speaker 2: He has the stats.
- 1:47:33Speaker 1: Now.
- 1:47:34Speaker 2: Uh, this is not anything against the early two thousands
- 1:47:38Speaker 2: Patriots teams who were obviously wagons, but they were scoring
- 1:47:41Speaker 2: at a much different clip once Kezkowski became the kicker,
- 1:47:45Speaker 2: like Gaszkowski has baked in there like the two thousand
- 1:47:47Speaker 2: and seven Patriots team. Yeah, still hit the kicks, he says,
- 1:47:50Speaker 2: twenty ten to twenty. Yeah, but how many of those
- 1:47:52Speaker 2: were extra points?
- 1:47:53Speaker 1: Still hit them?
- 1:47:54Speaker 2: This is oh okay, So we hit the old extra
- 1:47:56Speaker 2: point nod.
- 1:47:57Speaker 1: When do they move back it?
- 1:47:59Speaker 2: Maybe later in his career. And I actually think when
- 1:48:01Speaker 2: they moved it back it was kind of a problem
- 1:48:03Speaker 2: for him, wasn't it. It was like a mental move.
- 1:48:04Speaker 1: The extra point twenty fifteen. I thought it was much
- 1:48:07Speaker 1: longer than that. Yeah, that sounds right.
- 1:48:11Speaker 2: So that that's my biggest thing with like counting stats
- 1:48:14Speaker 2: for kickers, like points and you know that sort of thing,
- 1:48:18Speaker 2: is that a lot of that is predicated on the
- 1:48:21Speaker 2: offenses that you're playing.
- 1:48:22Speaker 1: Still have to hit the kicks. You more opportunities to.
- 1:48:25Speaker 2: Mard extra point like like he's making a thousand of
- 1:48:28Speaker 2: those than not you're the leading scorer. Also, how they
- 1:48:31Speaker 2: calculate it is is just it's all. It's always going
- 1:48:34Speaker 2: to be a kicker. Does any team in the NFL's
- 1:48:36Speaker 2: leading scorer not a kicker?
- 1:48:39Speaker 1: I have no idea. Maybe maybe maybe either Ravens or
- 1:48:42Speaker 1: the Bills. Who are the Ravens are the Bills? Like quarterback?
- 1:48:47Speaker 1: Well quarterback? They don't count past Yeah no, maybe not.
- 1:48:50Speaker 1: I know Tominson led the Chargers. That one insane here,
- 1:48:52Speaker 1: But you still to hit the kicks. I don't know.
- 1:48:55Speaker 1: You still did the kicks, You da have many more
- 1:48:56Speaker 1: opportunities to miss your under that much more scrutiny. I
- 1:48:59Speaker 1: think it matters. I think it matters. I think there's
- 1:49:02Speaker 1: something to be said at that even at that position
- 1:49:04Speaker 1: for volume and longevity.
- 1:49:06Speaker 2: I agree with longevity on any in any sport, at
- 1:49:09Speaker 2: any position. Longevity is impressive to me. But I just
- 1:49:14Speaker 2: I don't think. I think the answer to my own
- 1:49:15Speaker 2: question is all thirty two teams leading scorer in franchise
- 1:49:20Speaker 2: history has got to be a kicker, just the way
- 1:49:22Speaker 2: they calculate well, because kickers also play longer, right, But
- 1:49:24Speaker 2: it's just rushing touchdowns, receiving touchdowns and then kick it
- 1:49:27Speaker 2: like those are the only way that you score points
- 1:49:29Speaker 2: because they don't count passing touchdowns the same. So I
- 1:49:31Speaker 2: don't defensive scores, okay, but you're not gonna get enough
- 1:49:35Speaker 2: defensive scores to be the leading games. Oh my god,
- 1:49:39Speaker 2: stop it, all right, I want to play an over
- 1:49:41Speaker 2: under game while you look that up.
- 1:49:42Speaker 1: Yeah, let's do it, all right.
- 1:49:44Speaker 2: So here's a little over under for Patriots, you know,
- 1:49:48Speaker 2: over unders and individual players. Milton Williams five and a
- 1:49:52Speaker 2: half sacks over under.
- 1:49:55Speaker 1: Under because I think he's going to be more the
- 1:49:57Speaker 1: pressure pressure guy than the cleanup guy. Like I He's
- 1:50:00Speaker 1: gonna be impactful. That's the way they're gonna play defense.
- 1:50:02Speaker 1: That's a high number for that position. I'm gonna go
- 1:50:05Speaker 1: over because I'm gonna say he's gonna have six, So
- 1:50:07Speaker 1: I'm like it's a good number. It's like, right there,
- 1:50:09Speaker 1: six is a good night I think you're gonna see
- 1:50:11Speaker 1: more like calebon Chase on Cleaning Up the with Milton
- 1:50:15Speaker 1: Williams and Christian Barmore. Cause, yeah, give me, give me
- 1:50:19Speaker 1: like a pressure number for you for him, that's more
- 1:50:21Speaker 1: how I'm looking at. Yeah, fair enough, give me give
- 1:50:23Speaker 1: me a pressure number for him. Sixty.
- 1:50:25Speaker 2: I think sixty is a good number. Ke White had
- 1:50:27Speaker 2: forty five last Yeah.
- 1:50:29Speaker 1: Okay, so yeah, like I think, I yeah, in that conversation,
- 1:50:33Speaker 1: it's not gonna if you're just reading a regular box course,
- 1:50:34Speaker 1: it's not gonna look sexy. I think he makes an impact,
- 1:50:36Speaker 1: but I don't think the stack number is gonna be
- 1:50:38Speaker 1: very high. Christian Gonzales one and a half picks. I'm
- 1:50:40Speaker 1: gonna pick sixes, sixes, sorry, you know over two? Pick
- 1:50:45Speaker 1: six is over.
- 1:50:47Speaker 2: I'd say he had one last year, right, and then
- 1:50:49Speaker 2: he had to fumble recovery touchdown. Carlton Davis is going
- 1:50:52Speaker 2: to help him. I don't know if he was at
- 1:50:53Speaker 2: a fumbler recovery touchdown and a pick six, it might
- 1:50:55Speaker 2: have just beenumber. Christian Gonzales might have just been a
- 1:50:58Speaker 2: fubbler recovery touchdown last year touch against Miami.
- 1:51:02Speaker 1: But I'm.
- 1:51:04Speaker 2: I'll say over. I think I think Carlton Thing's.
- 1:51:07Speaker 1: Gonna help him.
- 1:51:08Speaker 2: Agreed, I'm gonna say over as well because the same
- 1:51:10Speaker 2: reason we talked about this, Carlon Davis hasn't been out
- 1:51:13Speaker 2: at practice the last couple of practices we've been at,
- 1:51:16Speaker 2: but he talked about this when he was out there
- 1:51:18Speaker 2: on that first one. Like having a guy like Carlton
- 1:51:20Speaker 2: Davis that in some games can just shadow an opponent's
- 1:51:24Speaker 2: top receiver that allows Christian Gonzalez to make more plays
- 1:51:27Speaker 2: on the ball kind of be more of like a
- 1:51:29Speaker 2: almost playing like free safety, but playing it as a
- 1:51:32Speaker 2: corner and seeing the ball more and making more plays
- 1:51:35Speaker 2: on it. I think is in play based off of
- 1:51:38Speaker 2: having Carlton Davis, and I think that would help him
- 1:51:40Speaker 2: make some more impact plays. There's obviously a ton of
- 1:51:43Speaker 2: value in him shadowing and taking guys out of the
- 1:51:45Speaker 2: game completely, but maybe a next step for Christian Gonzalez
- 1:51:49Speaker 2: is making those like splash plays on football and maybe
- 1:51:52Speaker 2: Carlton Davis allows him to do that. Roberts Blaine one
- 1:51:56Speaker 2: hundred and five tackles, so he had over this I believe,
- 1:51:59Speaker 2: like I mean had one fifteen right, yeah, well high
- 1:52:03Speaker 2: like an over one on five hours in that role
- 1:52:05Speaker 2: last year.
- 1:52:05Speaker 1: I'll say over.
- 1:52:06Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm gonna say over as well. Defense points per
- 1:52:08Speaker 2: game allowed twenty one and a half, so this would
- 1:52:11Speaker 2: be like a top fifteen ish defense in the league.
- 1:52:14Speaker 1: Yeah, I think they're like right at I So I
- 1:52:16Speaker 1: did a show in the Sports have recently r I
- 1:52:18Speaker 1: had them at twenty one, So I guess I have
- 1:52:21Speaker 1: to say under. But like, I also think they're gonna
- 1:52:23Speaker 1: play relatively up tempo. I think they might play some
- 1:52:26Speaker 1: games that did. Are you know they're they're not gonna
- 1:52:29Speaker 1: do much short in the game.
- 1:52:30Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm gonna sit well over under.
- 1:52:32Speaker 1: I think they allowed more than twenty one and a half
- 1:52:34Speaker 1: points per game, but it's like just barely.
- 1:52:36Speaker 2: Yeah, I would say again, that's a good number. Twenty
- 1:52:38Speaker 2: two ishes mayly where I'm at with them, So I
- 1:52:40Speaker 2: go over Stefan Diggs eleven and a half games played,
- 1:52:44Speaker 2: I'm going over over.
- 1:52:45Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:52:45Speaker 2: I think he's gonna play more. Remondre Stevenson seven hundred
- 1:52:48Speaker 2: and fifty rushing yards.
- 1:52:50Speaker 1: I'm gonna say it all depends, like if they don't
- 1:52:55Speaker 1: have leads, then it's not He's not gonna go over that, right.
- 1:52:57Speaker 1: What was it seven to fifty first Stevenson. Yeah, I'm
- 1:53:01Speaker 1: gonna say under under too much Henderson. Josh is too
- 1:53:05Speaker 1: good about balancing the workloads. I'm gonna say.
- 1:53:07Speaker 2: Under Henderson five hundred, five hundred fifty five receptions. Well,
- 1:53:12Speaker 2: I had that take earlier.
- 1:53:13Speaker 1: That running back is going to be top three on
- 1:53:15Speaker 1: the team and he's probably got to do it, so
- 1:53:17Speaker 1: I think I have to say over. I'm gonna say
- 1:53:18Speaker 1: over as well.
- 1:53:19Speaker 2: But that's another really good number.
- 1:53:21Speaker 1: I think I think he's like fifty five sixty five
- 1:53:23Speaker 1: somewhere now range. That's another good number.
- 1:53:24Speaker 2: A couple of Drake may One's here to wrap it. Uh,
- 1:53:27Speaker 2: thirty five hundred passing yards?
- 1:53:31Speaker 1: What do you have last year?
- 1:53:32Speaker 2: Probably right around three thousand, but you'll play it. Didn't
- 1:53:35Speaker 2: play every game.
- 1:53:35Speaker 1: I'll go over.
- 1:53:36Speaker 2: I hope it's over. I'm gonna say.
- 1:53:39Speaker 1: I'll say over. If that's a good tell me totally yards.
- 1:53:41Speaker 1: I'll definitely say over. That's a good number.
- 1:53:43Speaker 2: Three thirty five hundreds, like right where the sweet spot,
- 1:53:46Speaker 2: I'm gonna say over. I'll be optimistic today. Four and
- 1:53:49Speaker 2: a half touch rushing touchdown rushing coalshounds over on that.
- 1:53:54Speaker 2: I hope it's over. I hope that that's in their.
- 1:53:56Speaker 1: Back pocket going into a passing touchdowns didn't have passes,
- 1:53:59Speaker 1: Gonnas did not. I think they're gonna be running the
- 1:54:02Speaker 1: ball in from the five a lot. I don't think
- 1:54:05Speaker 1: he's gonna throw a lot of red zone touchdowns. I
- 1:54:07Speaker 1: think that's gonna be his touchdown pass are gonna be
- 1:54:10Speaker 1: the long ones when they get inside the ten. And
- 1:54:11Speaker 1: I know the red zones are twenty, but when they
- 1:54:13Speaker 1: get inside the ten, it's gonna be Romandre Stevenson behind
- 1:54:15Speaker 1: a full back and maybe Drake May behind a full back. Like,
- 1:54:18Speaker 1: I don't think they're throwing the ball a lot down there.
- 1:54:20Speaker 2: Yeah, this is a good question from Jeff. We only
- 1:54:22Speaker 2: have a couple of minutes, but we probably could unpack
- 1:54:24Speaker 2: this even more. Yeah, but he you know, we were
- 1:54:26Speaker 2: talking earlier about buying some you know, West Coast influence
- 1:54:30Speaker 2: in this offense, and he was asking me about building, uh,
- 1:54:35Speaker 2: the scheme and like building plays off of each other,
- 1:54:37Speaker 2: sequencing plays off of each other, which has been a
- 1:54:39Speaker 2: criticism of mine at their offenses for a couple of
- 1:54:41Speaker 2: years now. And he makes a good point. You know,
- 1:54:43Speaker 2: if they're gonna run West Coast run schemes, duo outside
- 1:54:47Speaker 2: zone things like that. You know, those don't marry to
- 1:54:50Speaker 2: the gap play action plays, right, Those are different types
- 1:54:52Speaker 2: of play action plays.
- 1:54:53Speaker 1: Right. It's a good point.
- 1:54:55Speaker 2: I wonder if that type of stuff, you know, is
- 1:54:58Speaker 2: always gonna be game playing, game plan, game plan with McDaniels.
- 1:55:01Speaker 2: So maybe one week it's it's more West Coast flavor
- 1:55:04Speaker 2: than another week where they feel like their biggest advantages
- 1:55:07Speaker 2: running right out of team and getting downhill. It might
- 1:55:10Speaker 2: be more that infused, but it will definitely be on
- 1:55:14Speaker 2: my radar end season when I'm watching tape of their offense,
- 1:55:18Speaker 2: you know, are they marrying gap runs with gap play
- 1:55:23Speaker 2: action and outside zone runs or zone runs with zone
- 1:55:26Speaker 2: play action, or how do they go about that that
- 1:55:29Speaker 2: That's a good question. They're in something that I definitely
- 1:55:33Speaker 2: look for, you know, on tape when I when I
- 1:55:35Speaker 2: watch offenses, I think the best offenses in the league
- 1:55:38Speaker 2: are the ones that run the same play for like
- 1:55:42Speaker 2: seventy five percent of the play and then all of
- 1:55:45Speaker 2: a sudden. The NFL it's something different though. That's what
- 1:55:48Speaker 2: the best play callers sequence together, That's what the best
- 1:55:52Speaker 2: play designers sequence together as well. That's where That's what
- 1:55:56Speaker 2: makes me always fall in love with the Shanahan offenses.
- 1:55:59Speaker 2: That's what they do best. Kyle Shanahan, Sean McVay, Matt Leaflora,
- 1:56:04Speaker 2: and Green Bay, Like, those guys are absolute wizards at
- 1:56:08Speaker 2: this looks like it's outside its own looks like it
- 1:56:11Speaker 2: looks like it looks like it Oh, it's action. Yeah,
- 1:56:14Speaker 2: that's that's why that works. That's that's really how the
- 1:56:18Speaker 2: the crux of how that works. Question about from Barton Poland,
- 1:56:22Speaker 2: this one is a good question that I'm excited about
- 1:56:25Speaker 2: for our our show's purposes. Is Uh, you're talking a
- 1:56:28Speaker 2: little bit about the Vikings and you mentioned Kevin O'Connell earlier,
- 1:56:31Speaker 2: and he said do the Vikings have the best supporting
- 1:56:34Speaker 2: cast in the NFL? And his question then also follows
- 1:56:38Speaker 2: with JJ McCarthy and does he succeed in Minnesota?
- 1:56:43Speaker 1: Uh.
- 1:56:44Speaker 2: JJ McCarthy's success or failure, especially relative, you know, comparing
- 1:56:48Speaker 2: and contrasting to Drake May this show is that, you know,
- 1:56:51Speaker 2: our credibility is kind of on the line exactly.
- 1:56:53Speaker 1: We need JJ.
- 1:56:54Speaker 2: I don't wish anything bad on JJ McCarthy, but we
- 1:56:58Speaker 2: kind of need JJ McCarthy to be bad. Say if
- 1:57:00Speaker 2: you're gonna draft J. J.
- 1:57:01Speaker 1: McCarthy, you need to be someone with a good offensive coach,
- 1:57:04Speaker 1: strong surrounding cast and sit him for a year. They
- 1:57:07Speaker 1: were kind of forced into that third thing, kind of
- 1:57:10Speaker 1: exactly what they said, we said they needed to do
- 1:57:12Speaker 1: with him. So he's he got the best landing spot
- 1:57:15Speaker 1: of any of the rookie quarterbacks last year. He obviously
- 1:57:17Speaker 1: got hurt, but he should make the most of that opportunity. Yeah,
- 1:57:21Speaker 1: I I but he doesn't. It's Daniel Jones competing with him, right,
- 1:57:25Speaker 1: Like they brought in some comp They're not so Dan
- 1:57:27Speaker 1: Joe's an Indianapoa.
- 1:57:28Speaker 2: Know who did they They brought in somebody like semi
- 1:57:30Speaker 2: legit to compete with.
- 1:57:31Speaker 1: Yeah, I don't know who.
- 1:57:32Speaker 2: Daniel Jones competing with Anthony richards That's what it was.
- 1:57:35Speaker 2: Anthony Richardson is his career might be as a starter
- 1:57:38Speaker 2: Samians Uh No, JJ McCarthy is gonna start in Minnesota.
- 1:57:42Speaker 2: And after watching what he, uh you know O'Connell did
- 1:57:46Speaker 2: with with Sam Darnold, like it's hard to imagine that
- 1:57:48Speaker 2: he's gonna stink, but.
- 1:57:49Speaker 1: It's gonna be. I'm gonna garoppolo in San Francisco all
- 1:57:52Speaker 1: over again.
- 1:57:53Speaker 2: Yeah, that's not a bad comparison. It was my comp
- 1:57:56Speaker 2: for he's got a little bit more than Jimmy mccaroppolo.
- 1:57:59Speaker 2: Jim garoppolo had the quick release and like the the
- 1:58:02Speaker 2: pillowy throws and stuff like that down, but I think
- 1:58:05Speaker 2: JJ McCarthy's got a little bit more of a cam.
- 1:58:07Speaker 1: It's gonna be Jimmy g and so that that would
- 1:58:10Speaker 1: make Max Brosmer Brock perty, which would be very fun.
- 1:58:13Speaker 2: You and h guy, Well, I I'm I'm just looking forward.
- 1:58:16Speaker 2: You know, he didn't get to see him last year
- 1:58:18Speaker 2: because he got hurt. It's a it's a great litmus
- 1:58:21Speaker 2: test for us as people that try to evaluate the
- 1:58:25Speaker 2: draft every year, and like, was I right or wrong
- 1:58:27Speaker 2: about JJ McCarty.
- 1:58:28Speaker 1: So we've got a factor in he's throwing to Justin Jefferson, Yeah,
- 1:58:33Speaker 1: and Jordan Addison and they've got t. J. Hawkinson a
- 1:58:37Speaker 1: tight end with what's his name and left tackle Christian Darius.
- 1:58:43Speaker 1: Not exactly the same group Drake May was working with
- 1:58:47Speaker 1: as a rookie, No, no, no.
- 1:58:49Speaker 2: To answer the best supporting cast question really quick, I
- 1:58:52Speaker 2: think it's Philadelphia and it's not even particularly close. I
- 1:58:55Speaker 2: I I miss so it's got a good one. You know,
- 1:58:57Speaker 2: Jefferson's are arguably the best player in the league. You're
- 1:59:00Speaker 2: best receiver in the league, I should say, But Aj Brown,
- 1:59:04Speaker 2: DeVante Smith, Dallas Goddard, Saquon Barkley, mad with the best
- 1:59:10Speaker 2: offensive line in football, that's the best. Yeah, by fun,
- 1:59:14Speaker 2: that's yeah, all right, that's gonna do it for today's show.
- 1:59:17Speaker 2: Perfect timing there with that anything right there, so that
- 1:59:19Speaker 2: that's a pro timing right there. So we'll be back
- 1:59:22Speaker 2: next week. Uh, there is mini camp practice scheduled for
- 1:59:26Speaker 2: Wednesday of next week, so we might be later in
- 1:59:28Speaker 2: the afternoon like we were a couple of weeks ago
- 1:59:31Speaker 2: when there was an OTA, So make sure to follow
- 1:59:34Speaker 2: both of us or follow Patriots dot COM's Twitter handle
- 1:59:37Speaker 2: as well. We'll have you updated on times and all
- 1:59:40Speaker 2: that good stuff because we might have to move it
- 1:59:42Speaker 2: around a little bit to accommodate Mini caamp. But the
- 1:59:44Speaker 2: cool part about that is is that we'll have a
- 1:59:46Speaker 2: ton of talk about because we'll have hopefully three days
- 1:59:48Speaker 2: in mini camp to digest on the show, so that
- 1:59:51Speaker 2: that could be a two hour That could be.
- 1:59:53Speaker 1: A meaty show.
- 1:59:54Speaker 2: Yeah, that could be a full two hours of all football,
- 1:59:56Speaker 2: so we're looking forward to that. Until then, have a
- 1:59:59Speaker 2: great week, the rest of your week, great weekend, and
- 2:00:01Speaker 2: we'll see you guys then.
- 2:00:02Speaker 1: Bye. Hey, this is Alex.
