- 0:00Hi everyone, welcome to Mini Scroll, the daily Internet
- 0:04culture podcast bringing you the biggest stories from social
- 0:07media, the creator economy and the digital space.
- 0:10Every Monday through Thursday and sometimes Fridays.
- 0:13I'm your host, Lauren Meisner, the founder of the youth digital
- 0:17media brand Centennial World. Welcome back to Mini Scroll,
- 0:21everyone. I realized on Friday, I said
- 0:23like Monday to Thursday and I was literally recording a Mini
- 0:26scroll on Friday. So I'm going to have to update
- 0:28that little intro, but I am excited to let you guys know
- 0:31that this Friday I will have a deep dive.
- 0:33I just recorded it. I think it was like an hour and
- 0:36a half long. It'll get chopped down a little
- 0:38bit with editing, but I just recorded a huge deep dive for
- 0:42you guys on the rise, the origins, the influence on of the
- 0:47manosphere, and I had a very exciting guest with me, so I'll
- 0:51leave it at that. If you follow me on Instagram,
- 0:53then you'd be able to see who I did the episode with.
- 0:56If you're in Australia, then you might know him.
- 0:59But yes, it was a very good episode.
- 1:01I'm excited to bring you guys a deep dive again.
- 1:04I know it's been a few weeks. I have to edit this myself this
- 1:08week because we still don't have a video editor.
- 1:10We're still trying to figure out like what we're going to do
- 1:12about that whole situation. So yeah, I am.
- 1:15I'm going to be under the pump this week doing that.
- 1:18So I'm going to take all of Wednesday to edit it.
- 1:20But again, if you see the deep dive and you're like this
- 1:23editing, she's not quite right. That's because I did it.
- 1:27It's because I'm not a professional video editor, and
- 1:29our video editor got a really sick job at Master Chef, and I'm
- 1:33so proud of her. All right, let's get into the
- 1:35stories for today. So the first way that I have for
- 1:37you guys is that the Try Guys have exposed BuzzFeed.
- 1:42So Keith and Zach from The Try Guys have opened up on their
- 1:45podcast about their experience at BuzzFeed, highlighting why so
- 1:48many creators left the company. The episode was seemingly
- 1:52prompted by this wave of nostalgia that the Internet is
- 1:55currently having for BuzzFeed. And like this kind of OG era of
- 1:59digital media. So they sat down and kind of
- 2:02shared their side of the story and kind of tried to like, I
- 2:05guess set the record straight on why people shouldn't be
- 2:07nostalgic for this era. Also, side note, we actually did
- 2:11a whole episode on like the rise and kind of fall of that OG
- 2:15digital media era where we talked a lot about BuzzFeed and
- 2:18everything that went on there. So go back and listen to that.
- 2:20It's in the infinite Scroll playlist if you guys watch on
- 2:23YouTube. But coming from digital media
- 2:25myself, I wasn't surprised to hear some of the things that
- 2:28they were saying. There were two main takeaways
- 2:31from this that people have been really kind of like pinpointing.
- 2:34The first is that the company tried to own their employees
- 2:37likeness with like sneaky contracts.
- 2:40So they told a story about how they were moving offices at one
- 2:43point, and the company used the move as an opportunity to get
- 2:47employees to sign new image release contracts, basically
- 2:50saying that they would be filming and creating content and
- 2:54whatever in like a new location. So they had to sign new release
- 2:58forms. You know, they were kind of
- 3:00pressuring everyone to sign it, saying like, don't worry about
- 3:02reading it, just sign it. It's just like an image release
- 3:04form. And when they read it, they
- 3:06realized it was a lot more than just an image release form.
- 3:09It also included owning their life story.
- 3:12Keith said that he sent a company wide e-mail after
- 3:15reading it saying nobody should sign this.
- 3:17And that got them into hot water with the company.
- 3:20And then they actually hired their own lawyer.
- 3:22And BuzzFeed said if you're going ahead with like this legal
- 3:24situation, then a storm is coming.
- 3:27That's what they said like word for word they said to them.
- 3:30And then second, they said people would get fired if they
- 3:32worked on anything like freelance work or anything
- 3:36outside of the company. They were told they wouldn't and
- 3:38that they just needed to disclose it.
- 3:40But as soon as they disclosed it, people would get fired.
- 3:43So look, I have experienced both of these things in working in
- 3:48digital media, like working in mainstream publishing before
- 3:51Centennial, I actually went through something very similar
- 3:54with like the likeness situation, not really contracts,
- 3:58but I was doing YouTube and like some of my own paid stuff before
- 4:01and like that was totally fine because I came in like doing
- 4:03that already. I know a lot of my friends who
- 4:06are working in mainstream publishing all across Australia,
- 4:09like across a variety of titles and publishers.
- 4:13They really struggle to keep themselves afloat.
- 4:16First of all, because the pay is so low.
- 4:17Like it is so incredibly low in these roles and like, I get it
- 4:20as somebody who runs a digital media company, like there is
- 4:23very little money in this industry.
- 4:25So check on your media friends because they're making like
- 4:27$2.00 an hour. No, but like for real.
- 4:30So they're not making a lot of money, but you know, then their
- 4:33skill set is writing or their skill set is content or whatever
- 4:37it is. And in your employee contracts,
- 4:40like it says like you cannot freelance right, for anyone else
- 4:42or whatever. And it's like, well, that's how
- 4:44they make their living. So I feel like it's so unethical
- 4:47just to pay people such a low wage, especially in comparison
- 4:51to their seniority and in comparison to their workload.
- 4:54Because I'm sure so many of us are going through this and in
- 4:57all different industries. But in media, you know, somebody
- 5:00leaves and they never replace them.
- 5:02And then everybody else's work just becomes more.
- 5:04So it's like all of these people have these roles that are
- 5:07already under paying them, they're overworked, they're told
- 5:10they're not allowed to have any type of like side hustle or side
- 5:13gig as well or they could lose that job.
- 5:16So I know that's very common in this industry.
- 5:20And yeah, when I went to actually like leave one of my
- 5:23jobs in digital media, I I went to quit and my boss said to me,
- 5:28OK, we need to tell everybody right now because sales just
- 5:32went to market with a deck and your face is all over it.
- 5:36And I never signed anything that said like, you know, I could be
- 5:40talent. I never got a pay rise for like
- 5:42my face. Like when I looked at the deck,
- 5:44it was like all my personal Instagram photos, like my
- 5:46personal Instagram content that was put throughout this deck.
- 5:49And they were selling me as like an influencer, like an in house
- 5:53influencer. I wasn't getting compensated for
- 5:55that. I wasn't getting like anything
- 5:57extra for that. I wasn't getting like a title
- 5:58change like any of that. Maybe I would have if I stayed
- 6:01and they had quote, UN quote, sold me into some of these
- 6:05campaigns or whatever they were trying to do.
- 6:07But yes, I can relate on a much smaller scale.
- 6:11But I know that this is like a very big problem across the
- 6:14board everywhere in digital media.
- 6:17And it's only going to get worse, I imagine, as media or
- 6:20digital media continues to kind of fall behind.
- 6:24You know, these mainstream publishers, a lot of them, like,
- 6:26just haven't for some reason been able to figure out, like
- 6:29how to keep up with the changing times.
- 6:32They don't have podcast wings. They don't have all these
- 6:35different things that you realistically need to be
- 6:37creating, like good content, digital content as a publisher
- 6:41in 2025. Like, they are still kind of
- 6:44figuring that out. So I imagine these problems are
- 6:46going to just, you know, keep being a thing and we're going to
- 6:50probably see more titles closing, which is very sad.
- 6:52And that makes me sad for my industry.
- 6:54OK, the next story that I have for you guys actually have two
- 6:57stories today that are kind of like debunking things.
- 7:00So the first one is that Benny Blanco has been accused of
- 7:04cheating on Selena Gomez, kind of.
- 7:07So last week, rumors started circulating online that Benny
- 7:10Blanco was cheating on Selena Gomez, possibly with her best
- 7:13friend, Teresa Marie. Teresa I think used to be
- 7:16Selena's assistant. The rumors claimed that Benny
- 7:19and Teresa were spotted together, which some fans
- 7:22thought was SUS I guess. But then immediately after it
- 7:25was reported that number one, Selena unfollowed Teresa and #2
- 7:30Benny followed Teresa's only fans account.
- 7:32So this obviously seemed questionable.
- 7:34There was no verification that Selena ever followed Teresa.
- 7:38And like, you know how some celebrities, like, won't follow
- 7:40people in their personal lives to, like, protect them?
- 7:42And I feel like Selena gives that energy.
- 7:45So I wouldn't be surprised if she was not following some of
- 7:47the people that she's closest with in her real life.
- 7:50But second of all, I think if Benny and Teresa were going to
- 7:53have an affair, like, they would be able to do it out of the
- 7:55public eye. If Kylie Jenner can hide her
- 7:58entire pregnancy, the amount of paparazzi that was on the
- 8:02Kardashians at that time, I would say is probably more than
- 8:06what's currently on Selena and Benny.
- 8:08But either way, Selena and Benny definitely have like a lot of
- 8:10paparazzi around them right now. I'm sure like they are quite
- 8:12famous right now. They're like in a moment.
- 8:14But yes, I think if Kylie Jenner can hide her pregnancy, I think
- 8:18Benny Blanco and Teresa Marie can hide their alleged affair.
- 8:22After all of this, like speculation and questions and
- 8:24people being like, is this true? Is this not true?
- 8:26Whatever. There were like news reports
- 8:28about it. It was revealed that the
- 8:30original source of the rumors allegedly came from a pop
- 8:34culture parody news account, and I say allegedly because I
- 8:39couldn't trace it back to this myself, but this was reported by
- 8:41Yahoo. The original source was
- 8:43apparently Drop Pop net, which is a sarcastic pop page where
- 8:47every NEWS UPDATE they post is fake rage bait content basically
- 8:52posted for fun. If this is not a lesson to all
- 8:57of us, but like especially people consuming Internet rumors
- 9:01like this news and also writers who are looking for content.
- 9:05And I get it. I get the pressure of needing to
- 9:08be like, Oh my God, I saw this tip.
- 9:10I saw this thing on Twitter and I can be the first one to
- 9:12publish it and I will get all the traffic.
- 9:15Like I totally get the high of that.
- 9:16I also understand the need for that when you're a writer trying
- 9:19to cut your teeth and you know you're working in digital media
- 9:22entertainment journalism is like really savage.
- 9:25I totally get it. Like IA 100% get it.
- 9:27But the fact that it has now been reported that the original
- 9:30source was like a Sark has like a satire page.
- 9:34We are not. Well, this should be a lesson to
- 9:36all of us. OK, Speaking of lessons to all
- 9:38of us, the next word that I have for you guys is that Tia Zucker
- 9:42has gone viral for her controversial caveman skin
- 9:45routine. And it turns out she is not a
- 9:50liar. So over the past few weeks, a
- 9:52creator named Tia has gone fairly viral on TikTok for
- 9:54documenting her experience with the caveman skin routine to heal
- 9:58her skin barrier. Basically, the caveman skin
- 10:01routine is doing nothing to your face quote.
- 10:05It's where you do nothing to your skin, including avoidance
- 10:07of washing, moisturizing, sunscreen, anything at all,
- 10:11dermatologist doctor Rachel Nazarian tells People magazine.
- 10:15Tia started doing this technique in March after years of skin
- 10:18picking and wanting to heal her acne scars.
- 10:22So OK, her skin looks very unique.
- 10:25It looks very unusual and interesting.
- 10:29And because of that, so many people have claimed that she's
- 10:33lying for clout. It's kind of similar to the
- 10:35accusations that were going around about scar girl a few
- 10:38years ago. Everyone's like, this has to be
- 10:40fake. Tia has insisted that her skin
- 10:42is real and that she's actually doing this regime.
- 10:45But a lot of people either like, don't believe her, think she's
- 10:48totally faking it, or some people think maybe she has some
- 10:51type of, like, infection and she's just, like, in denial
- 10:54about it. The number one belief around the
- 10:57conspiracy theory is that she's using some type of like,
- 11:00Amazonian clay mask with setting powder over top of it to give it
- 11:04that, like, really textured, almost like greenish look.
- 11:08So this was part of the discourse for about a week, but
- 11:12now it seems that one Internet sleuth has confirmed through her
- 11:16own research that Tia is not lying.
- 11:18Creator that mummy over there made a video last week
- 11:22explaining that she put a screenshot of Tia into ChatGPT
- 11:26asking what the skin condition could be.
- 11:28Then she put that result into Google and in her Google search
- 11:32she found a Reddit post. OK are you following from last
- 11:36year in which a woman who looks very very similar to Tia, like
- 11:40it definitely was her and her eyes were just like blurred out
- 11:43looks similar to Tia was posting about the skin condition asking
- 11:47for advice. This is some insane level
- 11:50Internet flu thing and I love how the woman was like I clearly
- 11:52have like no life. Tia commented on this video and
- 11:55confirmed that it was her and that she tried doing the caveman
- 11:59technique at that time and she didn't follow through because of
- 12:03like how annoying her skin was and like how it looked and
- 12:06everything. She just like couldn't keep
- 12:07going. So she's trying it again now.
- 12:10So the condition that she has is called retention hyperkeratosis
- 12:14and it's where the skin, it doesn't properly shed its old
- 12:17skin cells. But if you just keep going, I
- 12:19guess apparently it will get to the point where it will start
- 12:23kind of acting like a normal skin barrier again and start
- 12:25shedding those skin cells. So Tia has confirmed to people
- 12:28that she has a friend who is a dermatologist that she is seeing
- 12:31and they have diagnosed her with this and she does not have a
- 12:34fungal infection. So again, a lesson to all of us.
- 12:38I understand like it's hard because when you see stuff
- 12:41online, it's like we don't want to be those people.
- 12:42That's like always believing everything that we see and like
- 12:45that's a huge problem that we see with like AI generated
- 12:47content, for example, right? It's like you do always have to
- 12:50come into everything with like a healthy level of skepticism.
- 12:53But I also really feel for her. She's documenting this
- 12:56experience, asking for advice and like the entire Internet on
- 12:59TikTok is like you're a liar, you're using a clay mask for
- 13:03clout or like you have an infection on your face.
- 13:06And she's like, no, I don't. This is real for me.
- 13:08I suppose the take away and like the line that I'm going to draw
- 13:11is if anybody's talking about a medical condition or anything
- 13:15very sensitive like that, I'm going to choose to believe them.
- 13:20And I do think that's where we should draw the line because
- 13:21then I think it becomes a slippery slope.
- 13:23Like we see a lot of those videos where people are talking
- 13:26about how they have, let's say like an invisible disability.
- 13:28They go into an accessible parking spot and they get yelled
- 13:32at because they don't have, you know, a visible physical
- 13:35disability. And I think moments like this
- 13:38where the entire Internet is rallying against someone
- 13:42claiming that they are lying about their medical issue,
- 13:44people feel more emboldened to look at everyone, even in their
- 13:50real lives and think like, are you lying about that?
- 13:53Like, it adds to that kind of like skepticism and like
- 13:55conspiracy theory mindset. It leads to that intolerance
- 13:59and, you know, that kind of belief that everybody is just
- 14:02like lying to us so that they can get something out of it.
- 14:05So I do think when we have these viral moments, that's what we
- 14:08should take away from it. We just need to believe people
- 14:11until proven otherwise. OK.
- 14:13And the last story that I have for you guys, obviously, I need
- 14:17to talk about the gorilla versus 100 men meme.
- 14:20So the latest online meme that has turned into a debate could
- 14:24100 unarmed men take on one gorilla.
- 14:29This meme slash debate was started on Twitter by a man
- 14:31named Michael Cheryls who posted on April 25th that he thinks 100
- 14:36men could take on one gorilla, but they would have to be very
- 14:39dedicated to the cause. This tweet went viral and like
- 14:42actually viral. Like has almost 300 million
- 14:46views at the time of recording and it was discussed all over
- 14:49Facebook, Reddit, TikTok all weekend.
- 14:52All these different podcasts have been talking about it, and
- 14:55now even Mr. Beast has chimed in.
- 14:57He made a fake thumbnail for a video about the topic and asked
- 15:01if there were 100 men who could help him make this video.
- 15:04So Michael Cheryl's told NBC News, quote, the thing people
- 15:07love the most is things that probably won't ever happen
- 15:11because, you know, you can debate about it.
- 15:13It's like tasting a dream, you know what I'm saying?
- 15:15And I think people love to feel it out.
- 15:17OK, So then Rolling Stone took this very seriously.
- 15:21They interviewed primologist, primatologist, I guess that
- 15:26these are people that study monkeys, primatologist.
- 15:28I think about this debate to get a solid answer.
- 15:32So Ron McGill, who is the communications director of the
- 15:35Zoo Miami, told Rolling Stone that quote.
- 15:37As a wildlife conservationist, I would never want to see this
- 15:41come to fruition. Gorillas are in fact gentle
- 15:44giants and would avoid this conflict whenever possible. 100
- 15:48men in their 20s and excellent physical condition could
- 15:51ultimately defeat a gorilla if they are committed and go in
- 15:55united. That doesn't mean it would be
- 15:56pretty. The human assault force would
- 15:58quote have to expect severe collateral damage that could
- 16:02easily include death from broken necks, severe arterial bite
- 16:07wounds. Massive can suck massive
- 16:10concussions leading to fatal brain bleeds and asphyxiation
- 16:14from other men piling on top of each other.
- 16:16I'm sorry, what the fuck? McGill says quote.
- 16:18It could be a kamikaze mission for the men closest to the
- 16:22gorilla. What?
- 16:25I can't I. I don't know if this man just
- 16:29took this interview opportunity like so seriously or if he is
- 16:33like playing along with the joke, but this is crazy.
- 16:39Anyways, the memes are going insane, so you guys just have to
- 16:43look it up. It's really, really funny.
- 16:45And it's just one of those moments kind of as the creator
- 16:47said, as Michael said, like it's just fun.
- 16:51It's light hearted. It's never going to happen.
- 16:55So it's like interesting to think about.
- 16:57And it's one of those things that's just like uniting the
- 17:00Internet in a very neutral way for a very short period of time.
- 17:06Anyways, guys, that is it for Mini Scroll today.
- 17:09Thank you so much for listening. I love you guys.
- 17:12Please remember to rate, review and subscribe.
- 17:14We're trying to get to 10,000 YouTube subscribers.
- 17:17I love you guys and I will talk to you tomorrow.
- 17:19Bye.
