- 0:05Speaker 1: Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the right time. A wave original.
- 0:10Speaker 1: My name is Beaumont Jones. Thanks for listening wherever you
- 0:13Speaker 1: get your podcast. Thanks for watching us on YouTube. Subscribe, like,
- 0:18Speaker 1: rate us, review us, give us five stars. You only
- 0:20Speaker 1: give us four stars. I'm inclined to believe you are
- 0:23Speaker 1: a hater. We're going to talk in a little bit
- 0:25Speaker 1: about the Pittsburgh Steelers and why they look familiar. And
- 0:28Speaker 1: I don't mean that in no good way. But first,
- 0:32Speaker 1: I send a shout out to a Kevontae Turpin of
- 0:36Speaker 1: the Dallas Cowboys, he run back kicks for them. It
- 0:39Speaker 1: is amazing, by the way, Ryan, how famous you can
- 0:41Speaker 1: get by playing for the Dallas Cowboys because it's not
- 0:44Speaker 1: like Turpin isn't good at running back kicks, but I
- 0:47Speaker 1: don't know him for running back kicks if he does
- 0:49Speaker 1: not run back kicks for the Cowboys.
- 0:50Speaker 2: He's not Devin Hester.
- 0:51Speaker 1: Right, and the Cowboys weren't even good, right? But once
- 0:54Speaker 1: you're there and you're in one of those places, it's
- 0:56Speaker 1: kind of like playing basketball for Duke in college too.
- 0:59Speaker 1: I know who more Duke bums are. than any other
- 1:02Speaker 1: school there's ever been because they put those herbs on
- 1:05Speaker 1: television over and over and over and over and over again.
- 1:09Speaker 1: But anyway, Kamonte Turpin got pulled over with some weed
- 1:12Speaker 1: and a gun that apparently he didn't have all the
- 1:15Speaker 1: proper paperwork for. I don't really care about that. I'm
- 1:18Speaker 1: just telling you because I've told you guys many, many times,
- 1:20Speaker 1: this is that time of year where we sit around
- 1:22Speaker 1: waiting on somebody get locked up. I was in California
- 1:26Speaker 1: over the weekend doing a bunch of things. And I
- 1:29Speaker 1: saw people talk about some turpin guy and everything around him.
- 1:32Speaker 1: I couldn't figure it out. And I'm like, damn, what's
- 1:34Speaker 1: going on? Then I'm like, oh, that's right. We scraping
- 1:36Speaker 1: the bowl for content, baby. That's what we got. Like, damn,
- 1:40Speaker 1: too bad we don't care more about tennis. I hear
- 1:42Speaker 1: they have a very important tournament that's going on. But
- 1:45Speaker 1: lucky for us on this program, the New York Knicks
- 1:48Speaker 1: went ahead and finally hired a head coach And they
- 1:51Speaker 1: hired Mike Brown. And I think we have talked some
- 1:55Speaker 1: about Mike Brown on this show before. But this hire
- 1:59Speaker 1: is interesting because this is a very Dickensian best of times,
- 2:05Speaker 1: worst of times job that you could pick up. It
- 2:08Speaker 1: is obviously under the realm of the best of times because, A,
- 2:12Speaker 1: the Knicks are good.
- 2:14Speaker 3: Okay.
- 2:14Speaker 4: Okay.
- 2:14Speaker 1: Good enough that they made it to the conference finals
- 2:17Speaker 1: last year. You could make the argument that they made
- 2:19Speaker 1: the conference finals last year simply because Jason Tatum got injured.
- 2:23Speaker 1: I'm not sure that I would go that far, but
- 2:25Speaker 1: I think it is a fair point. However, Jason Tatum
- 2:28Speaker 1: is still going to be injured. So the circumstances that
- 2:31Speaker 1: created that, boom. They're still there. They lost to the
- 2:35Speaker 1: Indiana Pacers. Tyrese Halliburton, like Jason Tatum, suffered a torn Achilles. Okay, cool.
- 2:40Speaker 1: You can make an argument that on its face, the
- 2:42Speaker 1: Knicks should be the favorites to win the East. Now,
- 2:45Speaker 1: I have been a basketball fan for probably about 40 years.
- 2:50Speaker 1: I have been living in New York for eight years.
- 2:53Speaker 1: I can tell you this next part with utmost certainty, okay?
- 2:59Speaker 1: If you can make an argument that the Knicks are
- 3:04Speaker 1: the best team in the East? People in New York
- 3:09Speaker 1: believe the Knicks are the best team in the world.
- 3:15Speaker 1: All they ever need is an argument, a point, something
- 3:21Speaker 1: one might be able to say in these times. And
- 3:26Speaker 1: I just gave it to you right there, the plausible argument,
- 3:31Speaker 1: that they should be the best team in the East.
- 3:34Speaker 1: And by the way, as I think more about it,
- 3:37Speaker 1: it is not simply a plausible argument. What else you got?
- 3:44Speaker 1: Who else is it supposed to be? Like I'm sitting
- 3:47Speaker 1: here now looking at all the teams in the East. Ryan,
- 3:52Speaker 1: we're going to have a long year living in New
- 3:54Speaker 1: York as people who did not grow up as Knicks fans.
- 3:57Speaker 2: Oh, yeah. Because, I mean, you can talk yourself into,
- 4:01Speaker 2: you know, Celtics having a down year with the Tatum injury.
- 4:04Speaker 2: Pacers having a down year with the Halliburton injury. Who
- 4:07Speaker 2: knows what's going on with Milwaukee.
- 4:10Speaker 1: Right. Right. Another Achilles team, although he don't even play
- 4:14Speaker 1: on the roster no more.
- 4:16Speaker 2: He's not even on the roster. Do you believe in Orlando?
- 4:19Speaker 2: Do you believe in Detroit? And if you get in
- 4:21Speaker 2: the NBA Finals. Well, anything can happen. Uh-oh.
- 4:25Speaker 3: Uh-oh.
- 4:26Speaker 2: Uh-oh.
- 4:27Speaker 3: Uh-oh.
- 4:28Speaker 1: We both sound like Knicks fans right now. Like, we
- 4:31Speaker 1: are there. Good for business. They come to me on
- 4:34Speaker 1: the streets. I don't know. What do you think? What
- 4:36Speaker 1: do you think? That's what they were doing when they
- 4:38Speaker 1: was a 30-win team. I don't know. What do you think?
- 4:42Speaker 4: Right?
- 4:42Speaker 1: So, all I'm saying is, Mike Brown, you're expected to
- 4:46Speaker 1: win the East. And if you're expected to win the East...
- 4:52Speaker 1: you might be kind of sort of expected to win
- 4:54Speaker 1: the whole goddamn thing. I don't know if he knows that,
- 5:00Speaker 1: but that's kind of what you're walking into. And it
- 5:03Speaker 1: isn't really that often that somebody walks into a situation
- 5:06Speaker 1: where they get a head coaching job and people look
- 5:08Speaker 1: at you and expect that sort of thing. Now, the
- 5:11Speaker 1: reason for that is obvious. Normally people don't get fired
- 5:14Speaker 1: after they go to the conference finals, but that is
- 5:16Speaker 1: in fact what happened to the New York Knicks. Now,
- 5:19Speaker 1: Where this is interesting to me, specific to Mike Brown
- 5:21Speaker 1: and a part that I think I've talked about on
- 5:23Speaker 1: this show before, but I think it's something that we
- 5:25Speaker 1: can't talk about nearly enough. I can't think of any
- 5:30Speaker 1: coach who has been fired more times for no good
- 5:36Speaker 1: reason than Mike Brown. OK, I am going to pull
- 5:40Speaker 1: up Mike Brown's coaching record on this year. Wikipedia. OK,
- 5:45Speaker 1: we're not sponsored by those other people anymore, so I
- 5:47Speaker 1: won't use that. Mike Brown won 50 games his first
- 5:52Speaker 1: year with the Cavs, 50 games and went to the
- 5:55Speaker 1: finals the second year. They went 45 in the conference
- 5:58Speaker 1: semifinals and then back-to-back 60-win seasons, okay? The prevailing sentiment
- 6:06Speaker 1: from there had been that in an effort to try
- 6:10Speaker 1: to get LeBron to stay and a belief that LeBron
- 6:14Speaker 1: did not want to play for Mike Brown, The Cavs
- 6:17Speaker 1: let him go at the end of 2010. Another thing
- 6:21Speaker 1: that is worth noting is that Dan Gilbert has never,
- 6:24Speaker 1: if I have not mistaken, signed a head coach to
- 6:28Speaker 1: a contract extension. But anyway, after a combined 125 wins
- 6:36Speaker 1: in two seasons and a playoff series that you lost
- 6:40Speaker 1: in large part because LeBron James quit in game five,
- 6:46Speaker 1: No more Mike Brown. Okay. Come back during the lockout season.
- 6:50Speaker 1: You're getting the last of what Kobe Bryant has to offer.
- 6:54Speaker 1: They lost in the conference semifinals, not because of coaching,
- 6:57Speaker 1: but because Kobe shot him out of the end of
- 6:58Speaker 1: those games. Five games into the next season, Mike Brown
- 7:02Speaker 1: gets fired. Okay. He goes and coaches the Cavs, a
- 7:07Speaker 1: Cavs team that was bad, 33 and 49. Okay. By
- 7:12Speaker 1: the way, the only actual losing season Mike Brown has
- 7:14Speaker 1: ever had. Remember when I said that thing about LeBron before?
- 7:19Speaker 3: Okay.
- 7:20Speaker 1: Well, LeBron was coming back. Mike Brown gets fired. Sacramento
- 7:25Speaker 1: has their two best seasons with Mike Brown that they
- 7:28Speaker 1: had had in God knows how long. Yes, God does
- 7:32Speaker 1: know this. I personally do not. Halfway through year three,
- 7:37Speaker 1: not even halfway through year three, 13 and 18, he's
- 7:40Speaker 1: got to go have a talk with De'Aaron Fox. We
- 7:42Speaker 1: all see it on camera. Then he gets fired. OK,
- 7:46Speaker 1: all I'm saying is I don't think that you can
- 7:48Speaker 1: make an argument at any point that Mike Brown has
- 7:50Speaker 1: been fired for performance. He's been fired because he didn't
- 7:53Speaker 1: get along with the best player. He's been fired because
- 7:56Speaker 1: of the Hail Mary to try to keep a best player.
- 7:58Speaker 1: He's been fired because Jerry Buss was dying and they
- 8:01Speaker 1: were panicking and trying to win a championship before it
- 8:03Speaker 1: was all over. He has never been fired for poor performance.
- 8:07Speaker 1: He has been a part of four championships as an assistant.
- 8:11Speaker 1: He has worked under Greg Popovich. He has worked under
- 8:14Speaker 1: Steve Kerr. All of these things to me sound incredibly positive.
- 8:20Speaker 1: Now you are coming to coach the first Knicks team
- 8:24Speaker 1: that I can remember having expectations.
- 8:29Speaker 2: What could possibly go wrong?
- 8:31Speaker 1: Well, hold on, hold on, hold on, Ryan. Not just expectation, okay?
- 8:35Speaker 1: I am assuming that he will still have Rick Brunson
- 8:39Speaker 1: as assistant coach.
- 8:40Speaker 2: As of now, that is what's being reported.
- 8:42Speaker 1: Okay. Whatever they have amongst themselves as a roster, he's
- 8:46Speaker 1: still got to deal with. Whatever it is that you
- 8:49Speaker 1: have to figure out about Carl Anthony Towns, because I
- 8:52Speaker 1: feel like this. Year one for Towns went very well
- 8:54Speaker 1: on the court. Year two is when the scrutiny and
- 8:57Speaker 1: everything else starts, right? For everybody that's involved in this team.
- 9:01Speaker 1: By the way, the locals were mad enough to fire
- 9:04Speaker 1: Tom Thibodeau, right? They were generally on board with that. Now,
- 9:08Speaker 1: a point that I have made, right? You know, we
- 9:10Speaker 1: haven't been doing this this long. I don't know if
- 9:11Speaker 1: you ever heard me talk about this, but I have to,
- 9:13Speaker 1: you know, bring these up for you, for everybody else.
- 9:16Speaker 1: You never know who's watching you play for the first time, right?
- 9:18Speaker 1: Joe DiMaggio out here. I can make an argument for
- 9:21Speaker 1: firing anybody.
- 9:22Speaker 3: Right.
- 9:23Speaker 5: Right.
- 9:23Speaker 1: 30 teams in the NBA, 25 of them. I guarantee
- 9:28Speaker 1: you I could make an argument for firing them if
- 9:31Speaker 1: I want to fire them. The reason you get fired
- 9:34Speaker 1: is somebody wants to fire you. OK, but this wasn't
- 9:40Speaker 1: like they fired Thibodeau and then everybody that watched the
- 9:42Speaker 1: Knicks is like, oh, this is insane. No, they thought
- 9:45Speaker 1: that team should have been better. I don't know if
- 9:48Speaker 1: I thought that team should have been better, but they
- 9:51Speaker 1: thought that team should have been better. Okay. It's going
- 9:59Speaker 1: to be the same way for Carl. Honestly, at some point,
- 10:04Speaker 1: the clock's going to run out on Jalen Brunson. I
- 10:06Speaker 1: don't care what kind of discount they getting on him, right?
- 10:09Speaker 1: Mikael Bridges, who clearly doesn't want anybody to ever touch
- 10:13Speaker 1: him when he puts up a shot. All that's going
- 10:16Speaker 1: to start coming down on him. Josh Hart being a
- 10:19Speaker 1: power forward, but not really a power forward because look
- 10:21Speaker 1: at him. The clock's going to start running on that.
- 10:25Speaker 1: This is going to be a team that is under
- 10:27Speaker 1: an unreal amount of pressure, right? That's what Mike Brown
- 10:32Speaker 1: is walking into. I was talking to somebody and went
- 10:35Speaker 1: and I went to over the weekend and we were
- 10:38Speaker 1: talking about Carolina basketball, right? And I was talking specifically
- 10:42Speaker 1: about the years that they won championships in 05 and 09.
- 10:45Speaker 1: You could even say this about 2017. I was on
- 10:49Speaker 1: campus in 05. I was working in media in 09.
- 10:52Speaker 1: And it was amazing how the lead up to those
- 10:56Speaker 1: teams were fairly joyless. The championships and the wins, you
- 10:59Speaker 1: saw the excitement, but the lead ups were joyless. And
- 11:01Speaker 1: the reason was very simple. They were supposed to win.
- 11:05Speaker 1: It was as clearly championship robust as I have ever
- 11:09Speaker 1: seen for any set of teams. And that's a weird feeling,
- 11:13Speaker 1: especially with college players, right? Like it's win or bust.
- 11:17Speaker 1: You have players that had gone through a lot on
- 11:19Speaker 1: the way there, but it was really just like either
- 11:20Speaker 1: you win or you don't. That was it. There was
- 11:24Speaker 1: no other alternative. That's not fun, right? But it wasn't
- 11:28Speaker 1: terribly unreasonable. With the Knicks, I don't even think that
- 11:33Speaker 1: that's a totally reasonable way to look at the season,
- 11:37Speaker 1: but this is what it's going to be. And that
- 11:40Speaker 1: is what Mike Brown is walking into. Now, I have
- 11:43Speaker 1: seen the argument where people are like, well, Mike has
- 11:45Speaker 1: never coached under the kind of pressure that comes from
- 11:47Speaker 1: coaching in New York. I disagree with that. He's coached
- 11:51Speaker 1: LeBron James, again, getting fired after winning 60 games two
- 11:54Speaker 1: years in a row. That sounds like pressure to me, right?
- 11:56Speaker 1: He's coached LeBron James and he has coached the Lakers.
- 12:00Speaker 1: I think he's dealt.
- 12:00Speaker 2: With the Lakers with Kobe Bryant, Dwight Howard. Pau Gasol,
- 12:06Speaker 2: Steve Nash.
- 12:06Speaker 3: Yes.
- 12:07Speaker 2: It didn't last very long, but still.
- 12:09Speaker 1: He did that for a couple of weeks. He only
- 12:12Speaker 1: did that for a couple of weeks. But it was
- 12:14Speaker 1: still Kobe and Pau Gasol and succeeding Phil Jackson. Yeah.
- 12:20Speaker 4: Right?
- 12:20Speaker 1: It was still those things. All of that has been there.
- 12:24Speaker 1: I think by and large that he will be able
- 12:26Speaker 1: to manage it, but I also acknowledge the possibility that
- 12:29Speaker 1: there's a level to where this can go for that
- 12:32Speaker 1: team in terms of what we see. that we haven't
- 12:35Speaker 1: seen before, right? All of that is possible. Yo, this
- 12:43Speaker 1: is going to be such a wild NBA season because
- 12:46Speaker 1: everything I'm saying there about the Knicks, in my mind,
- 12:50Speaker 1: I don't think anybody else really right now off the
- 12:52Speaker 1: top of my head, except for maybe the Cavs, has
- 12:56Speaker 1: a better argument for why they should win the East.
- 13:00Speaker 1: I don't have anybody else that's there. Like, Ryan, you
- 13:03Speaker 1: mentioned the Magic. And I guess they got Desmond Bain.
- 13:06Speaker 1: I'm not there yet. No. Can't get there.
- 13:09Speaker 3: Not there.
- 13:11Speaker 2: I was still very young.
- 13:13Speaker 1: I hate their new jerseys. Can we talk about that
- 13:15Speaker 1: for a second? Have you seen their new jerseys?
- 13:17Speaker 2: Which ones do you hate?
- 13:20Speaker 1: I hate the idea of all of them. And the
- 13:21Speaker 1: reason I hate it is they're so uncreative. Is everybody
- 13:25Speaker 1: out of ideas? Every idea has to be an old idea. Right.
- 13:30Speaker 1: And so all they did was take old ideas and
- 13:33Speaker 1: try to hit them with a little razzle dazzle. Just
- 13:35Speaker 1: flip it up. Like, you know, it felt like our
- 13:37Speaker 1: buns have no seeds. Like every jersey looks like the
- 13:42Speaker 1: Big Mick. Every jersey that every jersey they broke out. Oh, man,
- 13:46Speaker 1: I love it. They look they all look like something else.
- 13:49Speaker 1: If you don't look like something else, just be something else.
- 13:51Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 13:51Speaker 2: Right.
- 13:52Speaker 1: But even then, I'm like, yo, we ain't got no
- 13:53Speaker 1: new ideas. But anyway, no, I'm with you. They are
- 13:57Speaker 1: very young. And I don't. I don't feel like they
- 14:00Speaker 1: have enough size.
- 14:03Speaker 2: I feel like you don't go from being the worst
- 14:05Speaker 2: offense in the NBA to competing for an NBA championship.
- 14:10Speaker 2: I don't think that's a one-season progression.
- 14:12Speaker 1: Don't see it. Don't see it. I do not see it.
- 14:15Speaker 1: But it's enough that everybody thinks they got a chance.
- 14:17Speaker 1: We also, by the way, have the Philadelphia situation where
- 14:21Speaker 1: a lot of how bad they were last year had
- 14:23Speaker 1: to do with injuries. There's no excuse for them being
- 14:25Speaker 1: that bad. Daryl Morey, All y'all all y'all go need
- 14:29Speaker 1: to get to it, I guess is the point. But
- 14:32Speaker 1: with nobody that has truly emerged. It's your time, New
- 14:37Speaker 1: York Knicks. It is your time, Mike Brown. And I
- 14:40Speaker 1: think he has a great temperament for handling all of this.
- 14:43Speaker 1: And I want to say again, I think he's a
- 14:46Speaker 1: good coach. I don't think that you can look and
- 14:49Speaker 1: make any arguments about Mike Brown as being bad coach.
- 14:53Speaker 1: Maybe you could say he is not great coach, but
- 14:55Speaker 1: I think he is a good coach. And something that
- 14:57Speaker 1: I think is very ironic is a big part of
- 15:00Speaker 1: the reason that Thibodeau is losing, lost that gig was offense.
- 15:05Speaker 1: The criticism that we had for a very long time
- 15:08Speaker 1: of Mike Brown was that he was a defensive guy
- 15:11Speaker 1: who couldn't really put it together for you on offense.
- 15:13Speaker 1: In fact, that five games that got him fired with
- 15:16Speaker 1: the Lakers, the big change they made that year is
- 15:18Speaker 1: he went and hired Eddie Jordan and brought in a
- 15:20Speaker 1: Princeton offense because he had to get somebody to run
- 15:22Speaker 1: the offense for Mike Brown. Then Mike went and spent
- 15:24Speaker 1: all that time working with the Warriors, and he figured
- 15:28Speaker 1: some stuff out at points. Sacramento had some all-time great offense.
- 15:32Speaker 1: They got as good a coach as you could expect
- 15:36Speaker 1: in a situation truly unlike anything that I can remember.
- 15:42Speaker 1: Maybe it's going to be fun living in New York.
- 15:45Speaker 1: It'll be a lot more fun if they win a
- 15:47Speaker 1: lot of games. It'll be a lot more crazy if
- 15:49Speaker 1: they don't. All right, Ryan, as we were scraping the
- 15:58Speaker 1: bowl for content to try to prepare this show for
- 16:01Speaker 1: these wonderful people, I was about to say this is
- 16:05Speaker 1: our first July show, which it kind of actually is.
- 16:08Speaker 1: But this is our first real July show.
- 16:11Speaker 2: Some days we show up, some days we have to work. Right, right.
- 16:13Speaker 1: Like, this is our first Monday, July show where it's
- 16:16Speaker 1: just me and you that's making it happen. If I'm
- 16:19Speaker 1: not mistaken, was Monday a week ago? Was that us?
- 16:23Speaker 1: We were still working with the finals, right? Like, we
- 16:25Speaker 1: were coming off of that?
- 16:27Speaker 2: That was two weeks ago.
- 16:28Speaker 1: Got it.
- 16:29Speaker 2: Yeah, it was two weeks ago.
- 16:31Speaker 1: But we had stuff, right?
- 16:32Speaker 2: But the week before was... NBA free agency and all
- 16:36Speaker 2: that stuff.
- 16:36Speaker 1: And Malik Beasley.
- 16:37Speaker 2: And Malik Beasley.
- 16:38Speaker 1: Which, by the way, you guys can't get enough of
- 16:41Speaker 1: that story. Ryan, I learned and did not know that
- 16:44Speaker 1: apparently Cairo Cuts, the barbershop in Milwaukee, is like, shall
- 16:48Speaker 1: we say, super cuts?
- 16:51Speaker 2: I did not know that either.
- 16:53Speaker 1: Like great clips?
- 16:54Speaker 2: Yeah, we're learning something new every day.
- 16:56Speaker 1: Yeah, that's what's... No, okay. Okay. Okay. It's like great clips.
- 17:03Speaker 1: but they got a dude named Lonnie and a woman
- 17:08Speaker 1: named Vero that seem to be like maybe the ones
- 17:12Speaker 1: who cut Malik Beasley's hair. They also got a dude
- 17:15Speaker 1: named Omar who perhaps can cut Malik Beasley's hair, but
- 17:19Speaker 1: does not look like It ain't the same. You feel me?
- 17:23Speaker 1: Got it. You get where I'm coming from? Yes.
- 17:26Speaker 4: Wow.
- 17:26Speaker 1: They got the, it's a Benetton ad at Cairo Cuts.
- 17:29Speaker 1: They got Mahdi, M-A-H-D-I. They got Nando. They got Juanita.
- 17:35Speaker 1: And they got Rick and Mike. They got Abril. They
- 17:38Speaker 1: got Tony. Oh, okay. Anyway, neither here nor there. We
- 17:43Speaker 1: are now going to have to be like a lot
- 17:45Speaker 1: of other people about whom we often offer a measure
- 17:49Speaker 1: of judgment. And what do I mean by that? What
- 17:51Speaker 1: I mean is very simple. Now we're just going to
- 17:56Speaker 1: have to find whatever football topic we can get to
- 17:58Speaker 1: get us through the day. I just don't want to
- 18:01Speaker 1: be that person, right? It may be better for business
- 18:05Speaker 1: to be that person, but I'm not that person.
- 18:07Speaker 2: It was either this or the Epstein list, so we
- 18:09Speaker 2: might as well talk about the Steelers.
- 18:11Speaker 1: The Epstein list that doesn't exist.
- 18:13Speaker 2: Correct. Or the lack of Epstein list.
- 18:15Speaker 1: Is Aaron Rodgers on McAfee this week?
- 18:18Speaker 2: We'll find out.
- 18:21Speaker 1: That's your number one source for such activity. But anyway.
- 18:25Speaker 1: TJ Watt is holding out from the Pittsburgh Steelers, which
- 18:28Speaker 1: is not what I think anybody expected to be the
- 18:31Speaker 1: words coming out of my mouth on this Monday. But
- 18:35Speaker 1: we go get whatever we can out of this bowl.
- 18:39Speaker 1: I actually think I have something interesting to discuss when
- 18:42Speaker 1: it comes to this. But TJ Watt is holding out.
- 18:44Speaker 1: And I actually find this to be funny because I'm
- 18:46Speaker 1: not funny necessarily. But I think that for a lot
- 18:48Speaker 1: of us, we look at this as a like, Very
- 18:53Speaker 1: simple thing. TJ Watt, defensive player of the year type candidate,
- 18:57Speaker 1: perhaps a future Hall of Famer, all of those things.
- 18:59Speaker 1: It's time to give him his money. You give him
- 19:02Speaker 1: his money, right? Except he's, what, 30? There have been injuries.
- 19:10Speaker 1: And this is the time where football discussions typically get
- 19:15Speaker 1: to be a little awkward, right? Guys want money for
- 19:18Speaker 1: what they did before. Teams are like, brother, that's not
- 19:21Speaker 1: how it works. And then we go from there.
- 19:24Speaker 2: Also, the deal he wants was given by the Browns.
- 19:30Speaker 1: Oh, he wants the Miles Garrett deal.
- 19:32Speaker 2: And that number is $ 40 million a year.
- 19:35Speaker 1: Okay, so just so we're clear, he wants the deal
- 19:38Speaker 1: that was given to somebody better than him.
- 19:41Speaker 3: Yes.
- 19:42Speaker 1: Okay. Now, hey, hey, hey. Miles Garrett is better than
- 19:45Speaker 1: just about all of them.
- 19:46Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 19:46Speaker 1: Right? So I don't want to say that like it
- 19:49Speaker 1: is an insult.
- 19:50Speaker 2: Of T.J.
- 19:50Speaker 5: Watt.
- 19:51Speaker 3: Correct.
- 19:51Speaker 1: However, I don't think T.J. Watt agrees with what I
- 19:55Speaker 1: just said.
- 19:57Speaker 2: And that's why we're in the situation we are now. Right.
- 20:01Speaker 1: And so as I understand it from reading it, the
- 20:05Speaker 1: difficulties come down to typical football stuff. The length of
- 20:08Speaker 1: the deal, the amount of guaranteed money, all of this.
- 20:12Speaker 1: And T.J. Watt knows that, like, I think I said
- 20:15Speaker 1: this about Giannis, where I was like, if I'm keeping
- 20:17Speaker 1: it real and if I'm the Bucs, I'm looking at
- 20:21Speaker 1: Giannis like, man, you gonna come and you gonna play.
- 20:23Speaker 1: Come on now, you a hard worker. You know what
- 20:26Speaker 1: I'm saying? They ain't really got no reason to be
- 20:28Speaker 1: out here worried about you.
- 20:29Speaker 2: No one's going to be worried about J.J. Watt's little
- 20:31Speaker 2: brother not showing.
- 20:32Speaker 1: Up to practice. Yeah, yeah, yeah. What is he going to.
- 20:35Speaker 2: Do, work out somewhere else?
- 20:36Speaker 1: Right, that's probably how the Steelers are looking at it, right?
- 20:40Speaker 1: Like when Yann is on that one, they're like, brother,
- 20:42Speaker 1: you ain't trying to go back to Athens selling hats.
- 20:45Speaker 1: You're going to bring your ass in here and you're going.
- 20:47Speaker 2: To be– What are you going to push the sled
- 20:49Speaker 2: in your own backyard?
- 20:51Speaker 1: You are going to continue exercising that work ethic that
- 20:54Speaker 1: got you to where you are today. That is what
- 20:57Speaker 1: the Pittsburgh Steelers are saying in their minds. Right. And
- 21:00Speaker 1: the worst is I bet on one level, TJ Watt
- 21:04Speaker 1: knows that's how they feel. And he resists the fact
- 21:06Speaker 1: that that's how they feel. And on the other hand,
- 21:09Speaker 1: a little part of him knows that they are right.
- 21:12Speaker 1: You know what I'm saying? Like him and his brother
- 21:14Speaker 1: been talking that super white man shit for so long, right? Like, no,
- 21:18Speaker 1: I'm going to pick myself up on my bootstraps and
- 21:20Speaker 1: get it done. It's all about the hard work, right?
- 21:24Speaker 1: And now he mad at himself. I've been that person.
- 21:28Speaker 1: When you're the person that's like, I do this because
- 21:31Speaker 1: this is what's right. I'm going to show up and
- 21:33Speaker 1: I'm going to do my job because I do my
- 21:35Speaker 1: job for me, right? I don't worry about them. I
- 21:38Speaker 1: do that. Man, they know when you act like that.
- 21:41Speaker 1: They know it and they don't respect it. They exploit it.
- 21:44Speaker 1: And so now you get caught within yourself. If I do,
- 21:46Speaker 1: I lower myself to the standard and raise less to
- 21:49Speaker 1: these lazy people. All right. So I know he's going
- 21:52Speaker 1: to be at the crib if you don't go to
- 21:54Speaker 1: training camp. Just mad. Just doing just just doing pushups
- 21:57Speaker 1: and chopping wood. Just being mad.
- 22:01Speaker 2: He's in Rocky Ford running up the hill in the snow.
- 22:04Speaker 1: Right. Like this. No, no idea what to do. His wife.
- 22:07Speaker 1: So sick of him. His wife being like. OK, ready, set, put. Right.
- 22:14Speaker 1: He out here doing swim moves in front of her.
- 22:16Speaker 1: And she's like, you better not hit me in the face.
- 22:18Speaker 1: I won't hit you in the face again. I promise.
- 22:21Speaker 4: Right.
- 22:21Speaker 1: Like these these are all the things that they are
- 22:23Speaker 1: going through. It has to be miserable for all parties involved.
- 22:27Speaker 1: I have this question about the Pittsburgh Steelers. Actually, before
- 22:35Speaker 1: we get to that question, right, I want to bring
- 22:36Speaker 1: up a conversation that I had at this wedding I
- 22:39Speaker 1: went to over the weekend, right? I was talking to
- 22:42Speaker 1: my buddy, John Gervais, and I always, you know me,
- 22:45Speaker 1: I like to give credit when somebody else comes up
- 22:47Speaker 1: with something. And so I forget exactly. Oh, we were
- 22:50Speaker 1: talking about in the NBA. And I think there's something
- 22:54Speaker 1: that cats don't get enough credit for in the NBA, okay?
- 22:57Speaker 1: If a dude signs a guaranteed contract for however much money,
- 23:02Speaker 1: It doesn't play well after that contract or mails it
- 23:05Speaker 1: in after that contract. We attack that person for doing that.
- 23:09Speaker 2: Were you guys talking about Bradley Beal?
- 23:13Speaker 1: It was not him, I don't think. I think we
- 23:15Speaker 1: were talking more hypothetically. But fair question you asked.
- 23:19Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 23:20Speaker 1: This is what Donald does when we were there. Sheriff
- 23:22Speaker 1: was like, yo, man. People got audacity, man. And the
- 23:26Speaker 1: reason we say they got audacity is we watch people
- 23:28Speaker 1: mail in jobs all the time. In fact, I have
- 23:33Speaker 1: worked jobs with people who mailed it in and people
- 23:35Speaker 1: were mad at me for being mad at him for
- 23:38Speaker 1: mailing it in.
- 23:40Speaker 3: Right.
- 23:40Speaker 1: Like like like not only is a certain measure of
- 23:43Speaker 1: laziness understood, it is expected as part of the human condition. Right.
- 23:48Speaker 2: And respected at some point. Right, right, right.
- 23:51Speaker 1: Like you're maximizing your ROI, your ROI, right? Like it's
- 23:55Speaker 1: coming back. We need to actually start giving people more
- 24:00Speaker 1: credit for still bringing it after this guaranteed money. Like
- 24:05Speaker 1: the NBA is full of guys with guaranteed money who
- 24:08Speaker 1: play hard all the time. And I don't think we
- 24:11Speaker 1: give them nearly as much respect as they deserve for
- 24:15Speaker 1: doing that because you, yes, You would never do such
- 24:21Speaker 1: a thing. You would get that guaranteed check and bail
- 24:25Speaker 1: it in. The only thing that keeps you grinding, the
- 24:30Speaker 1: only thing is the landlord. That's it. If you didn't
- 24:34Speaker 1: think that one day you could show up and then
- 24:37Speaker 1: you got to come home and explain to the old
- 24:39Speaker 1: lady why it is that y'all got to go get
- 24:41Speaker 1: them great value snacks from the grocery store. Right. Ain't
- 24:45Speaker 1: no more Whole Foods. No, no, no. That's the only
- 24:48Speaker 1: reason you show up to work and put in half
- 24:50Speaker 1: a goddamn effort. It's the only reason. That's it. Right.
- 24:54Speaker 1: Everybody that shows up to play after getting guaranteed money.
- 24:58Speaker 1: Good for you, because deep down inside, that is not
- 25:01Speaker 1: very smart. And I say this as somebody who engages
- 25:04Speaker 1: in such not smart behavior. Anyway, back to the Pittsburgh Steelers.
- 25:08Speaker 1: They are beginning to remind me a bit of the
- 25:13Speaker 1: Dream Team. No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.
- 25:18Speaker 1: Not that Dream Team. That Dream Team. That's right. The
- 25:25Speaker 1: Dream Team that got Andy Reid fired. That dream team.
- 25:31Speaker 1: For those of you who do not remember this, in
- 25:36Speaker 1: the year of our Lord, 2012, the Eagles went out
- 25:42Speaker 1: and made a lot of free agent signings, right? They
- 25:48Speaker 1: went and got, this shouldn't be the first one to
- 25:50Speaker 1: come to my mind, but excuse me, my fault. It
- 25:53Speaker 1: was the year 2011, not 2012. Okay.
- 25:54Speaker 3: Okay.
- 25:57Speaker 1: The first one that comes to my mind is Vince Young.
- 26:00Speaker 1: And it was a washed up Vince Young. So I
- 26:01Speaker 1: don't feel like calling him the dream team guy is
- 26:05Speaker 1: really the best way to go about putting that. Right.
- 26:09Speaker 1: But they went and got a. They got Nnamdi Asamoah.
- 26:12Speaker 1: I remember that. They got him. They got Jason Babin.
- 26:15Speaker 1: They got they would decide Ronnie Brown. Wow. Looking at
- 26:18Speaker 1: the list now, they would decide a bunch of guys
- 26:21Speaker 1: that I had forgotten about. But they made all these
- 26:24Speaker 1: all these moves and got these old, fairly washed up dudes.
- 26:28Speaker 1: And Vince Young famously when they signed him was like, man,
- 26:31Speaker 1: I feel like I'm signing up to play for Dream Team.
- 26:35Speaker 1: And Dream Team went eight and eight. They went 8-8,
- 26:39Speaker 1: and then the year after that, Andy Reid got fired. Now,
- 26:43Speaker 1: I want to be clear. That was also the year
- 26:45Speaker 1: that Andy Reid got the bright idea to make the
- 26:47Speaker 1: offensive line coach the defensive coordinator. So I don't think
- 26:52Speaker 1: it's fair to blame– I forgot about that. You forgot
- 26:55Speaker 1: about that.
- 26:56Speaker 2: Yes. I didn't realize that was like the 10 years
- 27:01Speaker 2: before Belichick was doing stuff like that.
- 27:04Speaker 1: Yes, yes, yes.
- 27:06Speaker 2: And that is also the season– They got Howie Roseman
- 27:09Speaker 2: essentially demoted, and then they went– is that when they
- 27:12Speaker 2: went and got Chip?
- 27:14Speaker 3: No.
- 27:15Speaker 1: Chip demoted Howie Roseman.
- 27:16Speaker 2: Oh, Chip demoted Howie.
- 27:17Speaker 1: Chip demoted Howie Roseman, yeah. So Chip– 2013 was Chip's
- 27:21Speaker 1: first year. So 2012, in the middle of that year,
- 27:24Speaker 1: I want to say, was Andy Reid who got fired
- 27:25Speaker 1: during that year or at the end of that year.
- 27:27Speaker 1: But they made all these moves. Look, this is not a–
- 27:31Speaker 1: This is not a league where getting a bunch of
- 27:36Speaker 1: other people's scraps, regardless if it's scraps of sirloin, if
- 27:41Speaker 1: it's scraps of filet, this isn't a league where getting
- 27:43Speaker 1: other people's scraps is what gets the job done. It's
- 27:46Speaker 1: just right.
- 27:47Speaker 2: Right.
- 27:47Speaker 1: Right. And that's what they've done. And that's not to
- 27:49Speaker 1: say that they can't ultimately win because I feel like
- 27:52Speaker 1: I can go pick up 11 dudes from in front
- 27:54Speaker 1: of the Home Depot and Mike Tomlin to win nine
- 27:56Speaker 1: games with.
- 27:57Speaker 4: Right.
- 27:57Speaker 1: Like, I think that that's a fair point that you
- 27:59Speaker 1: ultimately make. But moves like they've made, including signing old
- 28:03Speaker 1: ass Aaron Rodgers and everything else. It's all iffy, and
- 28:07Speaker 1: it all feels like the.
- 28:08Speaker 5: Sort of thing.
- 28:09Speaker 2: Trading for old Jalen Ramsey, which we didn't really cover
- 28:11Speaker 2: last week. That is correct.
- 28:13Speaker 1: I can't remember them all.
- 28:15Speaker 2: Sneaky old Jalen Ramsey turning 31 this year.
- 28:18Speaker 1: At corner.
- 28:19Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 28:19Speaker 1: This is normally the time where people start asking you
- 28:21Speaker 1: about moving a little bit farther off the ball, right?
- 28:25Speaker 1: DK Metcalf is not old, but he's somebody else's. Like,
- 28:29Speaker 1: I mean, there's there's there's a lot going on there.
- 28:32Speaker 1: And then you add on to it that T.J. Watt
- 28:35Speaker 1: is not there as of yet. But again, good, hard working,
- 28:40Speaker 1: red blooded American man like him. He'll be ready. Right.
- 28:44Speaker 1: But what happens if like it feels like the wheels
- 28:47Speaker 1: are coming off on this team? Because, Ryan, you and
- 28:49Speaker 1: I have talked about this in the the point of
- 28:51Speaker 1: comparison that you use that I love is the Steelers
- 28:54Speaker 1: have had three coaches since when?
- 28:56Speaker 2: The moon landing.
- 28:57Speaker 1: The literal moon landing. Chuck Knowles' first game was after
- 29:02Speaker 1: the moon landing. A month and a half after.
- 29:06Speaker 2: Yeah, a month or two, yeah.
- 29:07Speaker 1: But nonetheless, they've had three coaches since then, okay? How
- 29:11Speaker 1: bad would this have to, like, spiral and roll and
- 29:14Speaker 1: everything else for us to be like, hey, I don't
- 29:16Speaker 1: know about this Mike Tomlin thing?
- 29:20Speaker 2: It's wild because... You mentioned 11 dudes out of Home Depot.
- 29:26Speaker 2: I mean, he's never had a losing season in, what,
- 29:28Speaker 2: 17 years at this point? 16, 17 years. They also
- 29:32Speaker 2: have not won a playoff game since 2016, I believe.
- 29:35Speaker 1: Yes.
- 29:37Speaker 2: And GM just got extended. Mike Tomlin would probably be
- 29:44Speaker 2: the first hire for about 10 teams if there was
- 29:47Speaker 2: an opening and about three television networks.
- 29:50Speaker 4: Yep.
- 29:51Speaker 2: But been a long time.
- 29:54Speaker 1: Kind of like Andy Reid. Yep. It feels very Very,
- 30:01Speaker 1: very similar. It feels very similar.
- 30:04Speaker 2: I feel like Mike Tomlin doesn't have the glaring weakness.
- 30:08Speaker 2: Because Andy Reid's issues were so obvious with the clock.
- 30:13Speaker 1: Yes. I don't think we'll talk about any of that anymore. No.
- 30:16Speaker 1: Go ahead.
- 30:18Speaker 2: No, it was so obvious. Even before we got so
- 30:21Speaker 2: sophisticated with that sort of conversations, it was so obvious.
- 30:24Speaker 2: And he looked. His stare was so light. Mike Tomlin
- 30:27Speaker 2: always radiates confidence in people. He feels like a football
- 30:31Speaker 2: coach in a strange way. But people will– him tying
- 30:36Speaker 2: himself to old Aaron Rodgers is going to be definitely–
- 30:40Speaker 2: I think they're the most interesting team going into the
- 30:42Speaker 2: season by far.
- 30:43Speaker 1: And this is also in a– a division I would
- 30:47Speaker 1: say is very interesting. I think we'd agree that Baltimore
- 30:49Speaker 1: is definitely the best team in that division. Correct. We
- 30:51Speaker 1: would agree that Cleveland is definitely the worst team in
- 30:53Speaker 1: that division. And Cincinnati is going to score a lot
- 30:56Speaker 1: of points. Yeah. Right. That's what we know. The thing
- 31:00Speaker 1: for me with Tomlin is this and where it gets
- 31:01Speaker 1: interesting is that Tomlin. We agree that Tomlin is great
- 31:05Speaker 1: culture guy. Strategy guy.
- 31:09Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah.
- 31:13Speaker 1: Look, all I'm saying is this. Bill Belichick would cook
- 31:17Speaker 1: him year after year after year after year after year.
- 31:22Speaker 1: He would pull Mike Tomlin's pants down every year. I
- 31:25Speaker 1: think Tomlin won the last time they played against each other,
- 31:27Speaker 1: but just would flat out cook him every time. It's
- 31:30Speaker 1: not that's not how he's getting it done, I guess,
- 31:33Speaker 1: is the point that I'm making. And maybe that'll be
- 31:35Speaker 1: part of what they need. The margins being what they are.
- 31:37Speaker 1: I'm not sure. I think if they make the playoffs,
- 31:40Speaker 1: we're not having any discussion, win a game or not,
- 31:42Speaker 1: because they haven't had a quarterback worth discussing. And God
- 31:44Speaker 1: knows how long either. And I don't know how much
- 31:46Speaker 1: of that is his fault. I don't know exactly what
- 31:48Speaker 1: the power dynamics are or whatever.
- 31:49Speaker 2: But if you keep and if you keep winning and
- 31:51Speaker 2: you're kind of damned, if you do, damned, if you don't,
- 31:53Speaker 2: you win nine games, you can never get. you know,
- 31:57Speaker 2: the Patrick Mahomes, the Josh Owens, you're never drafting high
- 32:00Speaker 2: enough to go get the next big man.
- 32:03Speaker 1: It is very rare that we look at the Pittsburgh
- 32:05Speaker 1: Steelers as something uncertain. That is what we look at
- 32:08Speaker 1: them as being this year, right? I, for one, am intrigued.
- 32:20Speaker 1: Let me tell you about Z-Biotics pre-alcohol probiotic. Z-Biotics pre-alcohol
- 32:26Speaker 1: probiotic drink is the world's first genetically engineered probiotic. It
- 32:30Speaker 1: was invented by PhD scientists to tackle rough mornings after drinking.
- 32:34Speaker 1: Here's how it works. When you drink, the alcohol gets
- 32:37Speaker 1: converted into a toxic byproduct in the gut. It's a
- 32:40Speaker 1: buildup of this byproduct, not dehydration, that's to blame for
- 32:44Speaker 1: rough days after drinking. Pre-alcohol produces an enzyme to break
- 32:49Speaker 1: this byproduct down. Just remember to make pre-alcohol your first
- 32:53Speaker 1: drink of the night, drink responsibly, and you'll feel your
- 32:56Speaker 1: best tomorrow. Summer is here, which means more opportunities to
- 33:00Speaker 1: celebrate the warm weather. Before that backyard barbecue brew, glass
- 33:04Speaker 1: of pinot watching the sunset at the beach, or cocktail
- 33:07Speaker 1: by the campfire, don't forget your Z-Biotics pre-alcohol. Drink one
- 33:11Speaker 1: before drinking and wake up feeling great and ready to
- 33:14Speaker 1: take on the next day in all that summer has
- 33:16Speaker 1: to offer. Go to zbiotics.com slash Bomani to learn more

- 35:05Speaker 1: Now, if you haven't heard.
- 35:08Speaker 2: All right, Bo, this first story is about work.
- 35:12Speaker 7: Hi, I'm Isabel Fatal, and I'm a senior editor at
- 35:15Speaker 7: The Atlantic.
- 35:16Speaker 5: I recently wrote about a strange philosophy that shows up
- 35:19Speaker 5: in some corners of American culture.
- 35:22Speaker 7: The less you sleep, the more impressive you are.
- 35:25Speaker 5: Tech CEOs and influencers love to tout their morning routines
- 35:28Speaker 5: that begin at 5 a.m.
- 35:30Speaker 7: Or 4 a.m. or even 3 a.m.
- 35:33Speaker 5: But Americans have been ascribing moral value to a lack
- 35:35Speaker 5: of sleep for centuries. In 1861, an Atlantic writer railed
- 35:40Speaker 5: against newspaper articles in which all persons are exhorted to
- 35:44Speaker 5: early rising and to resolute abridgment of the hours of sleep.
- 35:49Speaker 5: America was built on Protestant work ethic, and the idea
- 35:52Speaker 5: that hard work is an inherent good has never quite
- 35:54Speaker 5: left us. The Christian ideals that dominated early American culture
- 35:59Speaker 5: helped schedule leisure into the week in the form of
- 36:01Speaker 5: the Sunday Sabbath.
- 36:03Speaker 7: Eventually, the 40-hour workweek was created. and workers were granted
- 36:06Speaker 7: both Saturdays and Sundays as days off.
- 36:09Speaker 5: But even as leisure became part of America's legal structure,
- 36:12Speaker 5: the obsession with hard work only grew. In the 19th
- 36:16Speaker 5: and early 20th centuries, pundits predicted that automation would lead
- 36:20Speaker 5: to more time for fun and leisure. But another ideology
- 36:23Speaker 5: took hold instead, one that the Atlantic contributor Derek Thompson
- 36:27Speaker 5: calls workism. College-educated Americans in particular have come to see
- 36:31Speaker 5: work as a way to build identity and seek fulfillment.
- 36:35Speaker 7: In other words, work is a quasi-religion. In recent years,
- 36:39Speaker 7: a majority.
- 36:40Speaker 5: Of Americans have acknowledged that they'd feel better with more rest.
- 36:44Speaker 5: But the mindset that sleep equals laziness is hard to shake.
- 36:48Speaker 5: Perhaps one day the new brag will be to say,
- 36:50Speaker 5: I sleep so much. But American society is not quite
- 36:54Speaker 5: there yet.
- 36:56Speaker 1: So what is interesting about that to me? As someone
- 36:59Speaker 1: who is a sleeper, I sleep very regularly. In fact,
- 37:03Speaker 1: I was a little disappointed in myself today because I
- 37:06Speaker 1: overslept getting ready to do this show. But I was
- 37:08Speaker 1: disappointed because I sleep so well. And I mean, well,
- 37:11Speaker 1: like efficiently. You know what I'm saying? Like I get
- 37:14Speaker 1: to sleep when I'm supposed to. I get the right
- 37:15Speaker 1: length of time. I couldn't believe I allowed myself to
- 37:17Speaker 1: oversleep because that meant I did something wrong on the
- 37:19Speaker 1: front end. You get what I'm saying? I always feel
- 37:24Speaker 1: like I earn that sleep. I do what I'm supposed
- 37:28Speaker 1: to do. I get my work done during the day.
- 37:30Speaker 1: I earn that sleep. I feel like if you sleepy
- 37:33Speaker 1: at the end of the day, that's how you know
- 37:35Speaker 1: you did your job. When I'm at the get the
- 37:40Speaker 1: least sleep point, it's when I'm doing the least stuff.
- 37:43Speaker 2: I think the most interesting point she brought up was
- 37:47Speaker 2: the American ideal of work. We all know that sleeping
- 37:53Speaker 2: more is better. All the science has pointed to sleeping
- 37:57Speaker 2: more is better for physical and mental health but however
- 38:01Speaker 2: the american american ideal says you need we need you
- 38:04Speaker 2: up early to get this work done as soon as
- 38:06Speaker 2: possible yeah get your work done before your work starts.
- 38:10Speaker 1: Yeah so no no it's fine so when i hear
- 38:13Speaker 1: that i guess this is my thought about it is
- 38:15Speaker 1: that the ideal that i think for the american is
- 38:20Speaker 1: to work as hard as you can right And if
- 38:23Speaker 1: you still need to go to sleep, make sure you
- 38:26Speaker 1: get the work done. That's the way that I think
- 38:29Speaker 1: about it, which I think is typically a result of
- 38:31Speaker 1: poor planning. You've not budgeted out your time or whatever
- 38:34Speaker 1: to do it right. Because if you do that, you stray.
- 38:39Speaker 1: But I have never looked down on anybody because they slept.
- 38:45Speaker 1: I have looked down upon them because they didn't get
- 38:47Speaker 1: their work done. That's all it is about for me.
- 38:52Speaker 1: Did you get your work done? I don't give a
- 38:53Speaker 1: damn when you went to sleep if you did your job.
- 38:57Speaker 1: Am I the only person that sees the world that way?
- 39:01Speaker 2: I like the idea. I'm going to start using I
- 39:03Speaker 2: earned that sleep.
- 39:05Speaker 1: Earned that sleep. Hell yeah, earned. If I didn't earn it,
- 39:07Speaker 1: why am I so sleepy? Like, look, that's just me.
- 39:11Speaker 1: If you sleepy, you need to go to sleep. That's
- 39:14Speaker 1: just it. Maybe you don't need to sleep for 10 hours,
- 39:16Speaker 1: 12 hours, whatever it is. But if you sleepy, it's
- 39:18Speaker 1: clearly because you need to go to sleep.
- 39:20Speaker 2: Oh, I have no problems with my sleep routine because
- 39:24Speaker 2: I am chasing around a one-year-old.
- 39:26Speaker 1: That's what I was about to say. I am amazed
- 39:28Speaker 1: at your ability to be there when I need you.
- 39:30Speaker 1: need you.
- 39:31Speaker 2: Oh, look, you know, you got to get this work.
- 39:35Speaker 2: All right. So our next article is also from The Atlantic.
- 39:39Speaker 2: It's titled, Why Do Billionaires Go So Crazy? You know,
- 39:43Speaker 2: talking about, you know, all of our overlords these days,
- 39:48Speaker 2: you know, having this ideal of kind of, you know,
- 39:51Speaker 2: losing their psychosis. And the main thought point, the thesis
- 39:55Speaker 2: of the article is about it all starts and ends
- 39:58Speaker 2: with the private plane. I think you'll appreciate a quote here.
- 40:06Speaker 2: These experiences sort of change your life. And you think
- 40:08Speaker 2: there is no one that I wouldn't bribe, betray, sweep
- 40:12Speaker 2: with to be freed from the armpit of man, mass transit.
- 40:18Speaker 5: Oh, okay.
- 40:19Speaker 1: So it's funny that it was why billionaires go so
- 40:23Speaker 1: crazy because I was talking to a friend of mine
- 40:27Speaker 1: who works with a billionaire. And he was talking about
- 40:32Speaker 1: something that someone told him around that world, which was
- 40:38Speaker 1: the billionaires, they're okay. It's the guys in between 100
- 40:45Speaker 1: million and a billion that are the jerks. I would
- 40:50Speaker 1: like to take note of how crazy it is to
- 40:52Speaker 1: make a distinction between those people because my life would
- 40:55Speaker 1: be exactly the same if I had either of those.
- 40:58Speaker 1: Like if I was anywhere in that continuum, I just
- 41:01Speaker 1: don't see how my life would be that much different.
- 41:03Speaker 1: But it was like, yeah, between 100 mil and a bill.
- 41:06Speaker 1: That's where that's where they're a little insecure of themselves
- 41:08Speaker 1: because they don't really have a title. There's a lot
- 41:11Speaker 1: of space between millionaire and billionaire. The title of millionaire
- 41:14Speaker 1: doesn't really mean anything. And then it goes from there.
- 41:18Speaker 2: It's people showing up with the smallest private plane and
- 41:20Speaker 2: they feel insecure about it.
- 41:21Speaker 1: That is correct. That is correct. So I have not
- 41:24Speaker 1: told you this. I don't know if I've talked about
- 41:26Speaker 1: this on air, but whatever. I know there are some
- 41:28Speaker 1: people who talk about how I tell stories over and
- 41:30Speaker 1: over again. That's because we're friends. Yeah.
- 41:33Speaker 2: That's what I'm talking about.
- 41:35Speaker 1: That's how it works. But you don't have a spouse, right?
- 41:38Speaker 4: Or whatever.
- 41:39Speaker 1: Like this is how it goes. But when I lived
- 41:42Speaker 1: in Miami, I used to live on Collins, right? In
- 41:44Speaker 1: the millionaire road drag. And I could look out my
- 41:47Speaker 1: window across the intercoastal waterway. And there was this house
- 41:50Speaker 1: and it had this beautiful boat in front of it, right?
- 41:52Speaker 1: Beautiful boat. And I thought about every day what it
- 41:54Speaker 1: was like to be the person that owned that house
- 41:56Speaker 1: and to get in the window and look out there.
- 41:57Speaker 1: And what did you see out that window? Not your
- 42:01Speaker 1: beautiful boat. But the dude's boat next door in his
- 42:03Speaker 1: boat is shitting all over your boat.
- 42:06Speaker 3: All over.
- 42:07Speaker 1: There's always somebody that got more.
- 42:08Speaker 4: Right.
- 42:09Speaker 1: Like you think you made it. It's always somebody who
- 42:12Speaker 1: got more always. And so that gets people into the trouble.
- 42:16Speaker 1: My argument for why billionaires are crazy people is very simple.
- 42:20Speaker 1: Nobody ever made a billion dollars by being a good person.
- 42:24Speaker 1: Like there's nothing sane or rational about trying to make
- 42:28Speaker 1: that much money. Like that being your goal, like the
- 42:31Speaker 1: idea that you get that much money and don't stop.
- 42:33Speaker 1: It's crazy.
- 42:35Speaker 2: I'm trying to think of counters. George Lucas. And that's me.
- 42:41Speaker 2: Like maybe that's it.
- 42:43Speaker 1: Maybe, right?
- 42:44Speaker 2: But someone who like sold, like built their art, sold
- 42:48Speaker 2: their art.
- 42:49Speaker 1: They're the closest ones, right? That's the closest that you
- 42:52Speaker 1: can get to it. Or the dude that invented Viagra.
- 42:56Speaker 1: You know what I'm saying? That's about what you got.
- 42:59Speaker 1: But otherwise, no, you're probably going to be a little
- 43:01Speaker 1: cuckoo for Cocoa Plus because wanting to have a billion
- 43:04Speaker 1: dollars is crazy.
- 43:06Speaker 2: And like you said, like getting to $ 100 million and deciding–
- 43:10Speaker 2: I need 10x more of this.
- 43:12Speaker 1: Job's not finished. Job's not done. Job's not done.
- 43:16Speaker 3: All right.
- 43:16Speaker 2: This is a bit of a turn. This is our
- 43:17Speaker 2: last one. It's an article from The New Yorker about
- 43:20Speaker 2: are young people having enough sex? Throughout many years, people
- 43:26Speaker 2: were always concerned about young people having too much sex
- 43:31Speaker 2: in the free love 60s and 70s. But now it seems–
- 43:35Speaker 2: This article discusses the Zoomer sex recession and some of
- 43:39Speaker 2: the articles, you know, some of the reasons for that.
- 43:43Speaker 2: One of the main reasons is almost too much exposure to,
- 43:48Speaker 2: you know, some of the more lewd things on the Internet.
- 43:52Speaker 2: And the thought being, you know, there's almost too much
- 43:57Speaker 2: available and that has– limited the uh actual uh physical
- 44:04Speaker 2: act with younger people.
- 44:06Speaker 1: Yo and so that's interesting because like a lot of
- 44:12Speaker 1: the for younger people and i'm going to use that
- 44:16Speaker 1: term somewhat broadly right not entirely teenagers but still there's
- 44:19Speaker 1: still a measure of curiosity that like is behind the
- 44:24Speaker 1: activity in a lot of ways. And so read this
- 44:27Speaker 1: book by Neil Postman, rest in peace, called The Disappearance
- 44:30Speaker 1: of Childhood. And the point is that the point that
- 44:33Speaker 1: he makes in that book is a that the notion
- 44:35Speaker 1: of childhood is actually very new and that the idea
- 44:38Speaker 1: of childhood children were just little adults for a very
- 44:41Speaker 1: long time. Think about we used to send them to
- 44:43Speaker 1: factories and coal mines. Right. So kids like kids were
- 44:46Speaker 1: actually not kids. They were just little bitty adults and
- 44:49Speaker 1: treated like adults for a very long time. And he
- 44:51Speaker 1: says that the idea and the advent of the concept
- 44:54Speaker 1: of childhood was a result of widespread literacy. And that
- 44:58Speaker 1: once you had widespread literacy, you were able to kind
- 45:01Speaker 1: of keep some societal secrets and that the progression of
- 45:06Speaker 1: becoming an adult and what is it is not reasonable
- 45:09Speaker 1: for adults was about what you could what you were
- 45:13Speaker 1: able to comprehend and understand through literacy.
- 45:18Speaker 2: So are you talking about kids figuring out Santa Claus
- 45:21Speaker 2: doesn't exist and things like that?
- 45:24Speaker 1: That is a very simple example, but yes. So that
- 45:27Speaker 1: is a secret that you keep. Spoilers.
- 45:29Speaker 2: Sorry to ruin it for everybody.
- 45:31Speaker 1: Right. But then eventually you let the kids in on it.
- 45:33Speaker 1: And so everything becomes, you become aware of things once
- 45:36Speaker 1: you are capable of reading about those things and then
- 45:39Speaker 1: understanding those things. And his argument was that we lost
- 45:44Speaker 1: the ability to keep secrets with television. Because television then
- 45:48Speaker 1: broadcasts all of these adult activities and ideas. And that's
- 45:52Speaker 1: how you get to your mom telling you to close
- 45:54Speaker 1: your eyes at certain parts and everything else, right? And
- 45:58Speaker 1: so if you take that idea that there are no
- 46:02Speaker 1: secrets in the age of television, which wasn't entirely true,
- 46:05Speaker 1: but wasn't entirely false. But if you go with that idea,
- 46:08Speaker 1: there are no secrets in the era of television because
- 46:10Speaker 1: television tells everything, then what in the world does the
- 46:12Speaker 1: internet do, right? So if you are then bombarded with
- 46:16Speaker 1: sexual imagery, for example, at this very young age, not
- 46:20Speaker 1: only is it no longer a secret, when you're a
- 46:23Speaker 1: little bit too young to get on board with it,
- 46:25Speaker 1: it's a little gross and scary perhaps, right? And perhaps
- 46:28Speaker 1: that then leads to this place where you get now
- 46:30Speaker 1: to where you have these young people who are not
- 46:32Speaker 1: having sex. Now, of course, then you add to that
- 46:34Speaker 1: the computer and the fact that you have this limited
- 46:37Speaker 1: amount of interaction.
- 46:39Speaker 2: Yeah, in order to have sex, you have to leave
- 46:41Speaker 2: your house and meet up with someone in real life.
- 46:43Speaker 1: The computer still ain't fixed that. They still have not
- 46:47Speaker 1: figured that one out. So, yeah, you add all of
- 46:50Speaker 1: that together. And I think that's where you get to
- 46:52Speaker 1: this place that we end up with. Because there's a
- 46:54Speaker 1: lot of people, you know, there's reason for the society
- 46:57Speaker 1: to feel like in one in the sense that, wow,
- 46:59Speaker 1: there's a lot less teen pregnancy, for example. But not
- 47:02Speaker 1: for the not for the goodest reason. You feel me? Like, yeah,
- 47:09Speaker 1: it's not because they're being more responsible because they.
- 47:12Speaker 2: Are doing a better job of educating them.
- 47:15Speaker 1: Yeah, they just skirt. That's all.
- 47:22Speaker 2: Oldie but a goodie voicemail topic. Craziest thing you ever
- 47:25Speaker 2: saw someone do when they owed someone some money. Great
- 47:28Speaker 2: submissions as always. Here's our first one. Hey, Bomani.
- 47:32Speaker 3: This is Mike. I've been a journalist for years. And
- 47:37Speaker 3: you asked... what's the craziest thing you ever saw to
- 47:42Speaker 3: see somebody get their money back? This isn't necessarily related
- 47:46Speaker 3: to cash, but when I first started, I was working
- 47:52Speaker 3: in a small town where I grew up. So I
- 47:55Speaker 3: knew everybody in the small town and the pastor of
- 47:58Speaker 3: the biggest church was arrested for grand larceny, but the
- 48:03Speaker 3: police wouldn't give me any information. But of course I
- 48:06Speaker 3: started digging and, And I saw that the only police
- 48:10Speaker 3: report in that period of time came from a woman
- 48:14Speaker 3: who I know all my life. She lived right down
- 48:17Speaker 3: the street from me. We used to call her Mother.
- 48:20Speaker 3: So I go and ask Mother if that pastor being charged,
- 48:26Speaker 3: her pastor, was related to her house being robbed. And
- 48:29Speaker 3: she said, yeah. So it turned out Mother's son was.
- 48:34Speaker 3: was on an illicit substance. It was the 90s, so
- 48:39Speaker 3: you can guess which one. But she came home one
- 48:42Speaker 3: day and her house.
- 48:43Speaker 4: Had been robbed.
- 48:44Speaker 3: Everything had been stolen. She later found out that her
- 48:48Speaker 3: pastor owed a dealer of that illicit substance some money.
- 48:52Speaker 3: He came and just took his money back, stole everything. Well,
- 48:58Speaker 3: mother goes to church a few weeks later. And she
- 49:03Speaker 3: sees her pastor announce that he is engaged. The pastor
- 49:07Speaker 3: was old, but he had gotten engaged to one of
- 49:11Speaker 3: the prettiest women in this little tiny town. So mother
- 49:16Speaker 3: went to the pastor and told him, Pastor. I don't
- 49:21Speaker 3: mean to harm, but I saw your wife's wedding ring
- 49:25Speaker 3: and that's my wedding ring that was stolen from my house.
- 49:33Speaker 3: And if you just give it back, you know, I
- 49:35Speaker 3: won't have to report it to the police. And the
- 49:39Speaker 3: pastor said, according to mother, looked at her and thought
- 49:43Speaker 3: about that pretty young woman that he was engaged to,
- 49:46Speaker 3: that he was going to have to ask for that
- 49:48Speaker 3: ring back. And he told mother, ma'am, you just going
- 49:52Speaker 3: to have to do what you got to do. And
- 49:55Speaker 3: that's how the pastor got arrested. Thanks for listening to
- 49:59Speaker 3: my story. Love what you do. Keep doing what you
- 50:01Speaker 3: do for money.
- 50:02Speaker 2: And I'll talk to you later.
- 50:04Speaker 1: You just going to have to do what you got. Boy,
- 50:07Speaker 1: that love.
- 50:08Speaker 5: Woo!
- 50:10Speaker 1: Them young thangs, boy, they be making them dudes.
- 50:13Speaker 2: Damn. Anytime you have pastor and grand of arsony in
- 50:18Speaker 2: the same sentence.
- 50:19Speaker 1: And crack, even if it wasn't said explicitly. And crack.
- 50:25Speaker 2: All right, here's our next one.
- 50:27Speaker 4: What's up, Beaumonti? Big fan. You asked a question about
- 50:31Speaker 4: a time when somebody had to show up and get
- 50:34Speaker 4: their money. See, my daddy was a cattleman. No, that's right.
- 50:38Speaker 4: He didn't like being called a cowboy. He'd always say
- 50:41Speaker 4: he was a cattle man. And one time this farmer
- 50:44Speaker 4: owed him, you know, $ 10, 000, $ 15, 000, which wasn't really uncommon
- 50:49Speaker 4: in that business. You know, deals would get made, payments
- 50:52Speaker 4: would be deferred and whatnot. Well, you know, months went by.
- 50:56Speaker 4: It was time to collect. My dad said, hey, we're
- 51:00Speaker 4: going to ride down the road and we're going to
- 51:03Speaker 4: get our money. I said, what do you mean? He said,
- 51:05Speaker 4: we're going to take our truck, we're going to take
- 51:07Speaker 4: our trailer, and we're going to pull in there, and
- 51:09Speaker 4: we're going to load up enough cows out of this
- 51:12Speaker 4: guy's barn until I feel like we've got our money's worth.
- 51:15Speaker 4: I said, all right. We pull up to the farm.
- 51:19Speaker 4: I'm expecting, you know, maybe a little bit of hostility,
- 51:22Speaker 4: maybe some words, maybe some punches, maybe even more than
- 51:25Speaker 4: that if you catch my drift. But nope, we pulled up.
- 51:30Speaker 4: The guy went back, said hello, nice to see you.
- 51:34Speaker 4: My dad told him what he was going to do,
- 51:35Speaker 4: and that's exactly what he did. We went, we got
- 51:37Speaker 4: us a trailer full of his cows, and we pulled off.
- 51:41Speaker 4: And I said, well, I'll never forget it. I said, pops,
- 51:44Speaker 4: how did you know it was going to go that way?
- 51:46Speaker 4: He said, because right is right and wrong is wrong,
- 51:50Speaker 4: and that man knew he was wrong. So we left
- 51:53Speaker 4: with a trailer full of cows, and my pops got
- 51:55Speaker 4: his money back. I got a whole bunch of stories
- 51:58Speaker 4: like that where things could have went sideways, but they didn't.
- 52:03Speaker 4: Not quite Yellowstone worthy, but, you know, things went a
- 52:07Speaker 4: little bit different down in the south in the Cal game. Anyways,
- 52:11Speaker 4: keep it up.
- 52:11Speaker 2: Appreciate y'all.
- 52:13Speaker 1: What I love about that is the phrase, until we
- 52:18Speaker 1: feel like we got our money's worth. There was no
- 52:22Speaker 1: specific quantity.
- 52:23Speaker 2: There was no actuarial tables pulled up. Right, right.
- 52:27Speaker 1: There was no, we are going to get exactly this
- 52:30Speaker 1: many cows. No, until I, I'm eating until I'm full.
- 52:36Speaker 2: Well, you don't go from the cowboy to the cattle man.
- 52:40Speaker 1: No.
- 52:40Speaker 2: Without a Yellowstonian idea of justice.
- 52:45Speaker 1: And I will just say this point again, part of
- 52:47Speaker 1: what I loved about that story. And for people who
- 52:50Speaker 1: don't know and don't understand about the way this show works,
- 52:53Speaker 1: I hear these stories the first time everybody else does.
- 52:55Speaker 1: We do this on purpose.
- 52:56Speaker 3: Right.
- 52:56Speaker 1: So we'll get the natural reaction. I love these stories
- 52:59Speaker 1: where there are activities and things that people stereotypically associate
- 53:03Speaker 1: with black people.
- 53:04Speaker 3: No, sir.
- 53:05Speaker 1: No, sir, it's everybody when it's time to get that money.
- 53:09Speaker 1: Everybody when it's time to get that money.
- 53:12Speaker 2: All right, here's our last one. So my name is Trey.
- 53:15Speaker 3: I'm from South Florida. And I was calling about.
- 53:18Speaker 4: That time that somebody owed me money.
- 53:21Speaker 1: When I was in college, I played football.
- 53:23Speaker 3: I was living with.
- 53:24Speaker 1: Three of my roommates.
- 53:26Speaker 3: So whenever we got the refund checks back, we'd all
- 53:30Speaker 3: pay our rent. at the beginning of the year.
- 53:33Speaker 1: So at the beginning of the year, we paid our rent.
- 53:36Speaker 3: And, you know, halfway through the year, we started getting
- 53:39Speaker 3: these messages from the landlord.
- 53:42Speaker 2: And so we realized that.
- 53:45Speaker 3: One of our boys from New York just hadn't been
- 53:47Speaker 3: paying his rent.
- 53:49Speaker 2: So one day we're.
- 53:51Speaker 3: Sitting there, we're.
- 53:53Speaker 4: Sitting there drinking, and my man brought his, he.
- 53:56Speaker 3: Had his girl over, and he hadn't brought her a drink.
- 53:59Speaker 3: So I'm trying not to swear, but so I grabbed
- 54:02Speaker 3: him and I hang him over the balcony. And the
- 54:06Speaker 3: next day he sold his car. But yeah, that's my
- 54:08Speaker 3: story about that time that somebody owed me money.
- 54:13Speaker 1: I feel like I'd like to know more.
- 54:18Speaker 2: Look, he sold his car so he wasn't dropped.
- 54:23Speaker 1: He went crazy. straight to the point on that story
- 54:28Speaker 1: like i i i wasn't expecting us to get straight
- 54:31Speaker 1: to anyway i wish you ignite on him and he
- 54:37Speaker 1: sold his i do whatever you need like like my
- 54:40Speaker 1: mess i need a picture of the man who called.
- 54:43Speaker 2: I need i want to know the car he sold
- 54:46Speaker 2: yeah like how much money we talking yeah and what
- 54:53Speaker 2: is it he said a year's rent like they pay
- 54:56Speaker 2: the rent for the year so.
