Transcript
- 0:04Speaker 1: Good morning, ruminators, and welcome to the second hour. Already Yeah,
- 0:07Speaker 1: on the Morning Show with Preston Scott. He's Jose. I'm Preston.
- 0:11Speaker 1: It's Friday, April tenth, show fifty five eighty and it's
- 0:17Speaker 1: good to be with you. As always, we thank you
- 0:19Speaker 1: for sharing time with us, and I'm pleased to share
- 0:21Speaker 1: time with our next guest. He has been on the
- 0:25Speaker 1: show a few times over the years. First heard him
- 0:28Speaker 1: when he was Speaker of the House for the Florida Legislature.
- 0:31Speaker 1: Now he's running for Governor Paul Renner.
- 0:33Speaker 2: Good morning, sir, how are you, Preston, Good morning?
- 0:37Speaker 1: Tell me tell me about kind of how's the campaign going.
- 0:43Speaker 2: It's going very very well. You know, there's been now
- 0:46Speaker 2: three and only three straw polls released in three different
- 0:50Speaker 2: grassroots groups. We've won all three of them, overwhelmingly by
- 0:54Speaker 2: more than two to one over Byron Donald's and so
- 0:59Speaker 2: we are convinced that when people get a fair comparison,
- 1:02Speaker 2: we're going to win this race.
- 1:03Speaker 1: You know, it doesn't matter who I have on the show,
- 1:05Speaker 1: if they're Florida based, Florida centric, whether it's doctor Bob
- 1:09Speaker 1: McClure with the James Madison Institute who I know you
- 1:12Speaker 1: know well, even those that are kind of analysts of
- 1:16Speaker 1: the session and what hasn't hasn't gotten done. The one
- 1:20Speaker 1: word that is common to all of those people is
- 1:22Speaker 1: the word affordability. And I know that you're focused on
- 1:24Speaker 1: it as well.
- 1:26Speaker 2: Absolutely, And you know, when it comes to property taxes,
- 1:30Speaker 2: a government should never grow faster than our incomes. But
- 1:32Speaker 2: that's exactly what's happened by a significant amount. And so
- 1:36Speaker 2: we'll be rolling out a substantial property tax proposal here
- 1:41Speaker 2: in the coming days. We're going around the state listening
- 1:45Speaker 2: to people to decide and help tweak that and what
- 1:48Speaker 2: they would want to see in that proposal, because at
- 1:51Speaker 2: the end of the day, we've all got to wind
- 1:53Speaker 2: up better off if we're going to undertake that than
- 1:55Speaker 2: we did when we started. People have to be happier
- 1:57Speaker 2: and most importantly, be able to afford the cost of
- 2:01Speaker 2: having a home. It's the most important thing to me
- 2:03Speaker 2: from an American dream standpoint, that first time home buyers
- 2:06Speaker 2: can afford to get a home, that people on fixed
- 2:08Speaker 2: income can afford to keep their home. Neither of those
- 2:11Speaker 2: things are happening throughout Florida today, and that's going to
- 2:14Speaker 2: change when I'm governor.
- 2:15Speaker 1: You know, I applauded Governor to Santas for the bold idea,
- 2:19Speaker 1: But quite candidly, I've been proposing that for the twenty
- 2:22Speaker 1: five years I've been doing this radio program that people
- 2:26Speaker 1: should own their own home when they pay it off.
- 2:28Speaker 1: When they pay it off, they should own it. They
- 2:30Speaker 1: should own the property that it sits on. So what
- 2:32Speaker 1: are the key tenants? I know you're going to go
- 2:34Speaker 1: around the state and listen, but what are the key
- 2:37Speaker 1: things that you think have to be included in a
- 2:40Speaker 1: property tax proposal?
- 2:43Speaker 2: Well, I think first to point to home ownership is
- 2:47Speaker 2: that homestead owners those that have a principal residence is
- 2:50Speaker 2: the place you live, will and most all cases, pay
- 2:54Speaker 2: no property taxes, which means every everyday person like you
- 2:58Speaker 2: and me will pay no property taxes, not just when
- 3:02Speaker 2: they pay off their home, but before then. And we'd
- 3:04Speaker 2: like to have that relief to be as immediate as possible.
- 3:09Speaker 2: But I also think we don't want to pick winners
- 3:10Speaker 2: and losers. We don't want, certainly don't want the local
- 3:13Speaker 2: governments to turn around and just say, okay, we'll just
- 3:15Speaker 2: tax mom and pop businesses, will tax people who rent
- 3:18Speaker 2: their homes are rent their apartment, for example, to make
- 3:21Speaker 2: up the difference, and I want to protect those folks
- 3:24Speaker 2: as well. So there's going to be broad relief for
- 3:26Speaker 2: everyone in the state of Florida. We do that to
- 3:30Speaker 2: begin with through savings, because that's what good conservatives should do.
- 3:33Speaker 2: Before you raise a dollar of any kind of replacement tax,
- 3:36Speaker 2: you should try to squeeze out every dollar that is wasted,
- 3:40Speaker 2: every dollar that is engaged in fraud or being spent
- 3:43Speaker 2: through fraudulent means. Look for efficiencies and how we do procurement,
- 3:48Speaker 2: look for other efficiencies through technology to squeeze down government
- 3:53Speaker 2: even leaner than it is today. I guarantee you we
- 3:56Speaker 2: can do that even as lean as we are in
- 3:58Speaker 2: the state. I think cheapest is not the next cheapest
- 4:01Speaker 2: behind New Hampshire. We can squeeze some dollars out of
- 4:04Speaker 2: the state government. I'm confident of that, and do that
- 4:07Speaker 2: across every place where taxpayer money touches, whether that's universities
- 4:11Speaker 2: or anything, anything that has taxpayer money. We need to
- 4:13Speaker 2: squeeze that down. So I've talked about, you know, permanent
- 4:16Speaker 2: dose rather than rather than just I know the CFO
- 4:19Speaker 2: has done a good job and keep him on board,
- 4:22Speaker 2: going one hundred miles an hour in every corner of
- 4:24Speaker 2: the state, saving us some money. That's the first place
- 4:27Speaker 2: to start.
- 4:32Speaker 1: Go to his website Vote Renner r E n n
- 4:35Speaker 1: e er dot com learn more about the campaign for
- 4:38Speaker 1: governor for Paul Renner served in the United States Navy. Again,
- 4:42Speaker 1: as always, thank you for your service, Paul to our country.
- 4:46Speaker 1: What would you say is the big issue behind property
- 4:51Speaker 1: tax reform that needs to be addressed here in Florida.
- 4:55Speaker 2: Well, I think it's just that people can't enjoy Florida
- 4:58Speaker 2: and afford to live here anymore. People that are working
- 5:02Speaker 2: to have to live an hour hour and a half
- 5:03Speaker 2: away to go to their job, and they're not making
- 5:05Speaker 2: a lot of money to start with. And so we've
- 5:07Speaker 2: been a victim of our success. Let me say that upfront.
- 5:10Speaker 2: I was part of that as an architect of the
- 5:12Speaker 2: Free State of Florida with Governor de Santas in building
- 5:15Speaker 2: what is a magnet for people from out of state.
- 5:17Speaker 2: But let's shift a little bit of the burden to
- 5:20Speaker 2: those people that are coming in from out of state
- 5:22Speaker 2: tourists of the other people, and make sure that people
- 5:25Speaker 2: that make their living here, that work here, that have
- 5:28Speaker 2: their home here get the benefit of this reform. And
- 5:32Speaker 2: that is where I'm aiming. That is the core principle
- 5:35Speaker 2: that I'm aiming to hit to make it a little
- 5:37Speaker 2: bit more affordable to live here in the great state
- 5:39Speaker 2: of Florida.
- 5:40Speaker 1: What's the line, what's the line between what the private
- 5:43Speaker 1: sector needs to do through capitalism and what the government
- 5:46Speaker 1: needs to do through good policy.
- 5:49Speaker 2: Well, the private sector creates all wealth. Government creates nothing
- 5:53Speaker 2: when it comes to wealth. But government should tighten its belt,
- 5:56Speaker 2: and again it should not have a windfall when we're
- 5:58Speaker 2: all struggling to pay our bills and so on the
- 6:00Speaker 2: property tax front, that's a clear lever to pull where
- 6:04Speaker 2: we can tighten up the belt both at the state
- 6:06Speaker 2: level too and the local level to free up some
- 6:09Speaker 2: dollars to make this tax reform work. And then in
- 6:13Speaker 2: other areas. You know, to your point is the private sector,
- 6:16Speaker 2: by providing better, higher wage jobs, can help us out
- 6:19Speaker 2: of the supportability situation. And so we've got to be
- 6:22Speaker 2: investing in our K twelve. Our university is making sure
- 6:24Speaker 2: they're nimble, they're effective, they're excellent, so that kids who
- 6:28Speaker 2: graduate from a school here have something meaningful and can
- 6:31Speaker 2: get a great job, Paul.
- 6:33Speaker 1: I'll let you go here to whatever extent you want to.
- 6:36Speaker 1: I have spoken pretty loudly and clearly about the fact
- 6:41Speaker 1: that Islam as a religion, as a faith, is incompatible
- 6:45Speaker 1: with our constitution. Anyone who is a practicing Islamist and
- 6:49Speaker 1: believes in the writings of the Qur'an, which I studied
- 6:52Speaker 1: for many years, knows and understands that you cannot be
- 6:57Speaker 1: a practicing Islamist and be supportive of the United States Constitution.
- 7:03Speaker 1: I don't think they should be allowed to run for
- 7:04Speaker 1: office if you're in Islamist. I don't believe they should
- 7:08Speaker 1: be allowed to run for any elected office anywhere in
- 7:10Speaker 1: the country, let alone in the state of Florida. How
- 7:13Speaker 1: do we protect Florida from what we're seeing happen in
- 7:16Speaker 1: New York and Michigan and in other parts of the country.
- 7:21Speaker 2: Well, the words you use are exactly the words I
- 7:23Speaker 2: use just a few weeks ago, and there's not any
- 7:26Speaker 2: people running for office that I'm aware of that have
- 7:28Speaker 2: been that clear cut. People talk about Shria law, I'm
- 7:30Speaker 2: not sure they even understand what that means. But I
- 7:33Speaker 2: agree with you, and it's not a statement of animosity,
- 7:35Speaker 2: And I know it's not for you. It's a statement
- 7:36Speaker 2: of fact. Is that as a system, it is incompatible
- 7:40Speaker 2: with the American constitutional order and the American way of life.
- 7:43Speaker 2: And the example I use is if one out of
- 7:46Speaker 2: a thousand Muslims that come into this country are Islamist
- 7:50Speaker 2: and follow those tenants and cause the death of innocent American,
- 7:55Speaker 2: isn't that one too many? Are you willing to allow
- 7:58Speaker 2: another thousand, another ten thousand, other one hundred thousand, a
- 8:00Speaker 2: million into this country? We have five hundred thousand and
- 8:03Speaker 2: a half a million Muslims in the state of Florida.
- 8:05Speaker 2: Today they're calling Dearborn Tampa the new Dearborn, which of
- 8:09Speaker 2: course is a majority Muslim community in Michigan. And we
- 8:12Speaker 2: know that they create enclaves. There are no go zones
- 8:16Speaker 2: in Europe. We don't have to speculate. We can look
- 8:17Speaker 2: at the nations of Europe and what's happening there where
- 8:19Speaker 2: women can be attacked and their attacker is never investigated
- 8:25Speaker 2: in these no go zones in an area they grew
- 8:27Speaker 2: up in. And so fundamentally I agree with you. I've
- 8:30Speaker 2: been saying it loudly. People have opened up to this threat,
- 8:33Speaker 2: and so as Governor I will restrict and prevent any
- 8:36Speaker 2: of these go zones. We'll do everything we can legally,
- 8:40Speaker 2: will challenge existing precedents. I love the bill that the
- 8:44Speaker 2: governor just signed. We need to cut off HB one.
- 8:47Speaker 2: You know I was a champion for school choice funding.
- 8:48Speaker 2: We're not going to give that to people that are
- 8:50Speaker 2: teaching these radical concepts. We're going to shut down any
- 8:53Speaker 2: slaughterhouses that don't meet our standards. We're going to make
- 8:56Speaker 2: sure there are not enclaves in our state. We're going
- 8:58Speaker 2: to make sure that CARE and Muslim Brotherhood are not
- 9:01Speaker 2: only designated terrorist organizations, but we're going to put the
- 9:04Speaker 2: full force of government behind preventing them from setting up shop.
- 9:09Speaker 2: And because we know they have terrorist ties and having
- 9:12Speaker 2: those activities here in our state, I will do everything
- 9:15Speaker 2: possible to protect our citizens. And again, I'm not willing
- 9:19Speaker 2: to let another thousand in the state if that means
- 9:22Speaker 2: that one of them, just one, and I think it's
- 9:23Speaker 2: more than that, but if just one would harm a
- 9:26Speaker 2: single innocent Floridian.
- 9:28Speaker 1: Paul, thanks very much for the time this morning. Look
- 9:30Speaker 1: forward to having you back in the future. Thank you, sir,
- 9:33Speaker 1: Paul Renner, and again the website vote renner dot com.
