- 0:23chickens. Hey everybody.
- 0:29Good morning from the chicken coop.
- 0:30Today, we are talking about listening skills for me as a
- 0:34coach. One of the most important things
- 0:36in the whole world is to be able to listen and hear what people
- 0:38are telling me. And really like, there's a
- 0:42difference between hearing. Yes, my ears can hear, but work
- 0:47can get me to the end result. However, listening involves so
- 0:52much more and listening skills are really not taught in school
- 0:56when we're a little, believe me. I know I was never Listening
- 1:01skills, and I had to really learn them when I got into
- 1:04coaching and had to go into these in depth trainings, where
- 1:08you were forced to learn through listening and hearing things
- 1:11that were not necessarily even being said.
- 1:15And so the listening part of life, I think is a very missing
- 1:20communication skill that we all suffer from.
- 1:23You know, you can be in a crowded place and someone will
- 1:27hear something, and they'll say, did you hear that?
- 1:29You're like, no. Or you can be in the dead quiet.
- 1:32Like, my husband has ears that are tuned for listening for
- 1:37creatures. Like, like, I've never seen it
- 1:39in my life. When we move to South Carolina,
- 1:42he started listening for everything and he took classes
- 1:46and he got his master naturalist certification.
- 1:49During that class, he was taught to hear like just pay attention
- 1:55with different ears and he can pick things out, he can identify
- 1:59frogs by the sounds. Toads by the sounds they make.
- 2:02Which to me is fascinating, I can say, oh, it's a frog or oh,
- 2:05it's a toad. But I can't tell you what kind
- 2:07it is and he can. And that's just a different
- 2:11level of listening. What?
- 2:13I am really good at is picking up on the tonalities in which
- 2:18people are saying things. Even though the words are saying
- 2:21one thing, the sounds are saying another, the energy it comes
- 2:25with the feeling the emotion and that took time and Effort and
- 2:31real practice to an end, dwarf that into asking questions about
- 2:37it. And why is this important in
- 2:39your life? One because you have to listen
- 2:41to yourself, you really have to be able to listen to that, slow
- 2:46low, inner dialogue. That's going off in your head.
- 2:48That's trying to communicate things to you.
- 2:51That we are not in tune to listening to we're in tune to
- 2:54shutting it down. We're into saying, ah, it's
- 2:57nothing just move on, carry on, but you What you have to listen
- 3:01to it because it is giving you information.
- 3:04It's giving you Vital Information in the more, you
- 3:06don't listen to it. The more that information will
- 3:08keep pecking at you and the pun was intended since I'm in the
- 3:11chicken coop. It'll just keep going at you.
- 3:15So it's imperative like, really imperative to be smart.
- 3:19And say, you know what, this, I'm going to pay attention to
- 3:23this. I'm going to listen to our or
- 3:25why is that? Just keep repetitively showing
- 3:28up. It's not funny.
- 3:30I don't like that. So that's a piece of it, just
- 3:34for yourself. The second level of it is those
- 3:37around you. The things that people are
- 3:39communicating to you, but you're not necessarily taking in
- 3:43because you're so stuck in your own head, in your own dialogue,
- 3:47that you're not hearing them. Now, whether that's your kids,
- 3:49your family, spouses Partners business, it doesn't matter,
- 3:54everyone's communicating and if we pause and we actually listen
- 4:00to what Dad. It's it gives us a superpower to
- 4:04be able to help them as well as help ourselves.
- 4:06Because if they're on our team and they're saying things, we
- 4:09need to know what that unsaid messages, because that's the
- 4:14trick in life, understanding that most people do have unsaid
- 4:17messages, they do communicate that way.
- 4:20And when you expect them to just be like, hey, I'm telling you
- 4:23everything went, where doesn't work that way.
- 4:26People just don't typically come out and do that.
- 4:30They will. Come out and tell their stories,
- 4:32they will make their stories be their identity.
- 4:35They will do those things. But there are nuances that are
- 4:39missing. And those nuances are the things
- 4:41that help you identify about yourself and about them and
- 4:46shift. And most people still to this
- 4:50day, communicate what they want you to know.
- 4:54But that's in those verb big verbal Communications.
- 4:57That's not the subtleties that are really their drivers.
- 5:00So if you're trying to lead a group, if you're trying to lead
- 5:03yourself, if you're trying to lead in your family, you have to
- 5:06understand those Noah nuances. And those leadership skills come
- 5:10in again or it's like, huh, instead of being reactive.
- 5:14I have to be proactive and I have to really listen and I have
- 5:17to ask questions in ways that people can answer them based on
- 5:21what I am hearing. So do yourself a favor, uplevel
- 5:25your listening skills, just practice with simple things like
- 5:28go out in the world today and just Listen to identifying
- 5:32things that are barely being heard.
- 5:34Like, here I am in the chicken coop this morning and you can
- 5:37hear the chickens. You can hear all that, but if
- 5:39you really listen, you can hear all the little bugs going off in
- 5:43the background, you can hear all the different types of birds
- 5:46because they're all flying in for breakfast at the feeders.
- 5:48You can hear crows off in the distance.
- 5:51You can hear. Oh that was right on cue.
- 5:54Look how funny that is. You can hear the peacock way off
- 5:58in the distance this morning. So, So many different sounds and
- 6:03it's quote, unquote, quiet, people, come on, say all this.
- 6:06Now quiet it is, but listen to all those little rooster way off
- 6:09in the distance, not mine, but you can hear it all and that's
- 6:13part of building the skills, listening for what's not being
- 6:16heard. Okay, I hope you guys have a
- 6:18very blessed day. I hope that this was helpful and
- 6:21I will see you all tomorrow. Bye.
