- 0:03This is Living Waters of Grace, the teaching ministry of Clark
- 0:08Wofford, senior pastor of Calvary Chapel of Westmoreland,
- 0:12County of Greensburg, PA. Now here's Pastor Clark as he
- 0:16continues teaching through God's Word.
- 0:37Jesus said I am the way, I am the truth.
- 0:40I'm the life. No man cometh to the Father but
- 0:43through me. It's not through any church
- 0:46system, it's not through any Sacramento rights, it's not
- 0:52through any kind of works of righteousness, which we have
- 0:55done, but it's according to His mercy.
- 0:58He has saved us and these are serious issues.
- 1:01We might take it for granted because we are in a Bible church
- 1:05and there's many churches still like this out there.
- 1:07Thank God for that. We usually find ourselves
- 1:11crafting our own set of rules. Some might believe that just
- 1:14showing up at church or racking up good deeds is the ticket to
- 1:18heaven. But spiritual maturity is all
- 1:21about realizing that the key to eternal life begins with
- 1:25receiving Jesus into your heart. Today, Pastor Clark shares
- 1:30insights on how Jesus is the only way to heaven.
- 1:34He hung on that cross bearing the weight of your sins.
- 1:39Without him, there's no chance for your sins to be wiped clean
- 1:43and heaven will be out of reach. Now here's Pastor Clark in Acts
- 1:47chapter 15 as he continues his message, the gospel of grace.
- 1:53So there's this problem in the church.
- 1:54Some people are saying, well, what do we do?
- 1:56What's the truth? There's a problem here.
- 1:59So Peter and Barnabas are getting them calmed down,
- 2:03reinforcing the truth of the gospel, and they're going to go
- 2:07up to Jerusalem and present this issue, this problem that's
- 2:11arisen in the New Testament church at the time of this idea
- 2:15of circumcision being part of what saves someone from their
- 2:19sin. Now at this time, there was this
- 2:24growth of the New Testament church.
- 2:26Church is being planted everywhere.
- 2:28Headquarters was sort of Jerusalem, but there really was
- 2:31never any headquarters in the church on earth.
- 2:35The headquarters of the church is in heaven, and that's God the
- 2:39Father, God the Son, God the Holy Spirit.
- 2:41They are the ones that lead and run the church.
- 2:45We don't need a hierarchy to keep things under control.
- 2:50We don't need a a place in Rome to tell us what's right or
- 2:55what's wrong. We don't need a place in Costa
- 2:58Mesa where Calvary Chapel started that tells us what's
- 3:01right or wrong. We know this word tells us
- 3:05what's right and wrong right. And so we are accountable to
- 3:09what the Bible teaches. And soon as something is being
- 3:12taught contrary to the Bible, then it all goes S very, very
- 3:16quickly. James was the half brother of
- 3:20Jesus and he was sort of the main guy in the church in
- 3:23Jerusalem, the first among equals if you may.
- 3:27And so he would sort of preside over this council that they were
- 3:31going to have regarding this issue of circumcision.
- 3:35This is a big deal because it's going to wreck the church if it
- 3:38isn't straightened out. Just like if a heresy came in
- 3:40here and someone started teaching something that wasn't
- 3:43biblical, it would wreck the church and scatter the sheep.
- 3:47So being sent on their way by the church, they were sent up by
- 3:51this church in Antioch. They passed through Phoenicia
- 3:53and Samaria, describing the conversion of the Gentiles and
- 3:57how they caused great joy to all the brethren.
- 4:00So it was so wonderful how all these people were getting saved
- 4:04miraculously in these church plants that the Paul and
- 4:06Barnabas were establishing. It was like a revival.
- 4:11It was just amazing how this, the preaching of the simple
- 4:14gospel, was convicting people and bringing them to faith in
- 4:19Jesus Christ. There was no rituals, there was
- 4:21no ceremonies. There was no hierarchy of people
- 4:26telling them, yeah, you put your faith in Christ, but then you
- 4:29got to do these three things or four things in order to make
- 4:32sure you're really saved. That wasn't happening.
- 4:35Verse 4. And when they had come to
- 4:36Jerusalem, they were received by the church and the apostles and
- 4:40the elders, and they reported all the things that God had done
- 4:43with them. But some of the sect of the
- 4:45Pharisees, and this is the false cult of the Pharisees, the
- 4:49Judaizers who believe rose up saying it is necessary to
- 4:53circumcise them and to command them to keep the law of Moses.
- 4:59Paul tells us in Galatians and in this book of Galatians was
- 5:03written to communicate these issues and problems that we're
- 5:07continuing in the early stages of the church.
- 5:10And he's very emphatic and what he says here in Galatians
- 5:13chapter one, verse 6 through 9, this ties right into this.
- 5:18Paul says, I marvel that you were turning away so soon from
- 5:22him who called you in the grace of Christ to a different gospel,
- 5:27which is not another. But there are some who trouble
- 5:30you and want to pervert the gospel of Christ.
- 5:33But even if we are an Angel from heaven, preach any other gospel
- 5:37to you than what we have preached you.
- 5:39Let him be accursed, as we have said before.
- 5:43So now I say again, if anyone preaches any other gospel to you
- 5:47than what you have received, let him be accursed.
- 5:51That's pretty deep and pretty powerful, what he said there.
- 5:58And so I run into people, you run into people.
- 6:01Unfortunately, the body of Christ on the earth is so
- 6:04fragmented between so many different denominations and so
- 6:08many different opinions and so many different liturgies and
- 6:12rituals and ways of doing things and way of not doing things.
- 6:16But anytime a ritual supersedes the gospel, it's a heresy.
- 6:22Nothing wrong with the ritual. Some people use candles and
- 6:25incense. Some people use drums and
- 6:27guitars to worship God. There's nothing inherently wrong
- 6:30in any of that. But if we lift any of the ritual
- 6:33above the truth of the Word of God, we've become false
- 6:37teachers. So you have different groups
- 6:40that say you cannot be saved unless you confess your sins to
- 6:47a priest maybe? Or you can't be saved unless you
- 6:51speak in tongues. Or you can't be saved unless
- 6:56you've received the second blessing and called the holiness
- 7:00doctrine. And these people teach that you
- 7:02have this experience, you'll never sin again.
- 7:05I mean, it's craziness, you know.
- 7:06And so you have all these people with these different agendas
- 7:09and, and different ways of adding things to what the
- 7:12Scriptures say. And so as a result, the
- 7:16simplicity of the gospel is corrupted by the gospel being
- 7:21Jesus plus something else. And the gospel is that Christ
- 7:27died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that he was
- 7:30buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the
- 7:34Scriptures. Jesus said I am the way, I am
- 7:39the truth, I'm the life. No man cometh to the Father but
- 7:43through me. It's not through any church
- 7:46system, it's not through any Sacramento rights, it's not
- 7:51through any kind of works of righteousness, which we have
- 7:54done, but it's according to His mercy.
- 7:57He has saved us. And these are serious issues.
- 8:00We might take it for granted because we are in a Bible church
- 8:04and there's many churches still like this out there.
- 8:07Thank God for that. Bible churches that teach the
- 8:10Bible, not man's ideas of what the Bible says, are teaching
- 8:15things that aren't in the Bible. I'm amazed at how many people
- 8:20look at tradition, and I don't care what the tradition could
- 8:22be. It could be the tradition of
- 8:24Catholicism or Eastern Orthodoxy or Reformation theology.
- 8:29As soon as you make something more superior, a system to the
- 8:33truth of the simplicity of the gospel, which Paul was worried
- 8:37about, the thing that bothered in the most is that our minds
- 8:40would be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ
- 8:44Jesus. It is enough that Jesus died and
- 8:50that he died for me. That's enough.
- 8:54But all these other things, they make people religious, they make
- 8:58them proud, they make them self-righteous.
- 9:01So this brother said to me, you know, how could they tell me,
- 9:05you know, what's the basis of me losing my salvation?
- 9:09What sin is it that I could lose my salvation?
- 9:14David committed the worst of sins, adultery and murder, and
- 9:21yet because he was a man after God's own heart, the Spirit
- 9:25convicted him, and he repented of his sin, and God still
- 9:29declared him even after his sin, that he was a man after God's
- 9:33own heart. Aren't you glad?
- 9:35Psalm 50 ones in the Bible, restore unto me the joy of my
- 9:39salvation. Create in me a clean heart, O
- 9:43God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.
- 9:47A broken and a contrite heart God will not despise.
- 9:52There's no sin once you've become a believer in Jesus
- 9:55Christ that would prevent you from entering into the Kingdom
- 9:59of heaven. Now I don't recommend you sin
- 10:05because you have this security in Christ.
- 10:08If you love Christ, you don't want a sin.
- 10:11If you love Christ, you'll send less.
- 10:15If someone says they're a believer and they decide they no
- 10:18longer want to follow Christ, you pray for them and pray that
- 10:22the Holy Spirit will convict them.
- 10:25God inscribes us in the palm of our hands.
- 10:29He promises He will never leave us or forsake us.
- 10:33He doesn't make us a son or a daughter and then disown us.
- 10:39So these teachings are really very, very dangerous out there.
- 10:44You cannot lose your salvation. If you could lose it, you never
- 10:48had it. And so this is a big issue at
- 10:54this time. And this sect is evil and
- 11:00they're trying to cause problems.
- 11:02In verse 6 now the apostles and elders came together to consider
- 11:05this matter and when they had had been much dispute, Peter
- 11:10rose up and said to them, and it must have been a chaotic
- 11:12environment. The Judaizers yelling, the true
- 11:16believers arguing it wasn't probably a real calm room and
- 11:20meeting. I mean people really pretty
- 11:22uptight about this because they were both passionate on both
- 11:25sides. Peter rose up and said to them,
- 11:28of course we know Peter was a Jew.
- 11:29He had that vision of on the rooftop of don't call something,
- 11:33it's clean, unclean. I mean, he had this revelation
- 11:36all the sudden that there is no difference between Jew and
- 11:39Gentile. There is no preference from God
- 11:42between those who are kosher and those who aren't.
- 11:45Thank the Lord for that vision. Men and brethren, you know that
- 11:48a good while ago God chose among us that by my mouth the Gentile
- 11:52should hear the word of the gospel and believe.
- 11:55So God, who knows the heart, acknowledged them by giving them
- 11:58the Holy Spirit, just as He did to us, and made no distinction
- 12:02between us and them. In other words, again, there is
- 12:05no distinction between the Jew and the Gentile purifying their
- 12:10hearts by faith. Now therefore, why do you test
- 12:14God by putting a yoke on the neck of the disciples, which
- 12:17neither our fathers nor we were able to bear, but we believe
- 12:21that through the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ we shall be
- 12:24saved in the same manner as they.
- 12:27Then all the multitude kept silent, and listened to Barnabas
- 12:31and Paul, declaring how many miracles and wonders God had
- 12:34worked through them among the Gentiles, and after they had
- 12:37become silent, James. And of course this is the half
- 12:41brother of Jesus, the one who wrote the book of James as well
- 12:44answered, saying, Men and brethren, listen to me.
- 12:48Simon had declared how God at first visited the Gentiles to
- 12:52take out of them a people for his name.
- 12:55And with this the words of the prophets agree, just as it is
- 12:58written. And this is from the book of
- 13:00Amos. After this I will return and
- 13:03will rebuild the Tabernacle of David, which has fallen down.
- 13:07I will rebuild its ruins. I will set it up so that the
- 13:10rest of mankind may seek the Lord.
- 13:13Even all the Gentiles who are called by my name, says the
- 13:16Lord, who does all these things known to God from eternity are
- 13:22all his works. Therefore, I judge that we
- 13:25should not trouble those from among the Gentiles who are
- 13:28turning to God, but that we write to them, they're going to
- 13:31give them direction. Now, these are the things that
- 13:34are important to to understand once you're born again and
- 13:38you're saved and you got this group of Jews and Gentiles
- 13:42learning how to worship together, realizing that to
- 13:46Jewish people growing up in Judaism, being kosher was
- 13:50important. Being gentile.
- 13:53We'd eat pigs, we'd eat whatever, you know, we didn't
- 13:55care about that didn't make us any better or less holy or
- 14:00didn't make them any more holy. But it was a tradition of their
- 14:03upbringing. And so the wisdom of the
- 14:05apostles and James and all those who got together was they gave
- 14:08them some direction here. Abstain from things polluted by
- 14:13idols. In other words, don't
- 14:16necessarily intentionally eat in the presence of your Jewish
- 14:21brothers and sisters who are in Christ things of food that would
- 14:24have been offered the idols. And Paul gets into that later in
- 14:27the book of Corinthians. We'll get to that again.
- 14:29It's a sensitivity of conscience that you don't want to stumble
- 14:34people unnecessarily about what you do or what you like Or
- 14:42they're called mores. What is right and wrong for the
- 14:45child of God according to the word of God?
- 14:48Some of you in here probably don't go to movies anymore.
- 14:51You probably haven't stepped your feet into a theater in
- 14:55probably years. And that's a big issue for you
- 14:59because of how you perceive, you know, Hollywood and graphic
- 15:03violence or immorality that's depicted in most movies.
- 15:06But everybody has a conscience. Some people can watch a movie,
- 15:12and it's not that they condone those kind of things, but
- 15:16they're looking at the storyline and, you know, they're focusing
- 15:19on, you know, the good parts of the movie, whatever.
- 15:22So but someone maybe would see you going to a movie theater and
- 15:26say, well, you can't be a Christian if you're going to
- 15:28movies. Some people act that way or
- 15:32playing cards. What are you doing tonight?
- 15:34I'm I'm going to play 5 stud poker, 5 card poker with my my
- 15:39neighbor. What don't you know that's
- 15:42gambling or you know you you shouldn't be playing.
- 15:44We were in Bible cards. They taught us we could play
- 15:47cards, but we only could play Rook or Melbourne.
- 15:50We couldn't play face cards because face cards were sinful
- 15:55crazy. We were told that we couldn't
- 15:58listen to any music other than Christian hymn music.
- 16:04You couldn't listen to country, you couldn't listen to rock, you
- 16:07couldn't listen to jazz, you couldn't listen to classical.
- 16:09I mean, it's crazy Legalism, and legalism is a horrible thing to
- 16:15be under bondage to now. When I was in Bible college, I
- 16:21liked rock. I still like some of it now, but
- 16:24in order to listen to it without stumbling someone, I hadn't
- 16:27remember those old stereo headphones you put on.
- 16:29You put this big plug in, you know you.
- 16:32So I was listening to bread, you know, that was far from rock.
- 16:35It don't matter to me. Remember that this calm music,
- 16:38but the Bible call you just thought that was evil music.
- 16:42I could see Metallica or maybe some of that stuff would be out
- 16:44there. But, you know, there's nothing
- 16:46wrong with bread, you know, or America or some of these
- 16:49different calm bands. But anyway, if you were caught
- 16:54listening to that kind of music, people would question your
- 16:57salvation. Or you're in a restaurant and
- 17:02you're looking around. Well, I don't see anybody here
- 17:04that knows me. I guess I could have a, a Miller
- 17:06Lite or I could have a Cabernet or I could have a Merlot.
- 17:10And, you know, I'm just going to have one And, and that should be
- 17:12OK. But someone comes in all of a
- 17:14sudden. Did you see such and such?
- 17:17They had a beer on their table. I mean, come on.
- 17:20You know, the Bible teaches moderation, but it doesn't teach
- 17:26abstinence. So all these things are all part
- 17:29of this thing of adding something to what it is that
- 17:35makes us acceptable to God. At the end of the day, I don't
- 17:38care how perfect a life you live and how holy you think you are,
- 17:43if God still shows you what's in you, you would scream.
- 17:47We are depraved people, as soon as we don't understand it, we
- 17:51still have a sinful nature and we are totally unholy compared
- 17:55to the holiness of God. No matter how good we work and
- 17:58how hard we try, at the end of the day, we are still falling
- 18:02creatures. Amen.
- 18:03And I mean defend you if you think you're perfect in here
- 18:08today. And I have to tell you, you're
- 18:10seriously disillusioned, you know?
- 18:12So what makes you acceptable to God is Jesus Christ.
- 18:18He's your holiness. He's your righteousness.
- 18:21He's your redemption. It's because we are in Christ
- 18:25that we've been made acceptable to God.
- 18:27But we forget, well, I'm going to really try to be a good
- 18:31Christian and we should want to be faithful to God and not
- 18:34dishonor him. But if at the end of the day,
- 18:36you think of all the stuff you've done and you lay your
- 18:39head down the pillow, well, God, I did a pretty good job today.
- 18:41I didn't swear, I didn't lust, I didn't think this, I didn't
- 18:44judge, you know, and, and, and the Lord's just up there
- 18:47smiling. Well, let's see how tomorrow
- 18:48goes, because eventually you're going to break.
- 18:52You're just human. You're going to break.
- 18:55So churches that teach these kind of things, and in this
- 18:58instance we got this issue of circumcision, but it's anything
- 19:02that tries to make you feel righteous by something you've
- 19:05done versus what he's done. Ephesians 289 says for by grace
- 19:11you've been saved through faith. And this is not yourselves.
- 19:16It's a gift of God, not a works. So no one compose, no one
- 19:21compose, and then he says, for we are his workmanship created
- 19:25in Christ Jesus unto good works which got us before ordained
- 19:28that we should walk in it. So the Holy Spirit's job is to
- 19:31transform us and to make us more into the likeness of Jesus
- 19:34Christ. And he does that through the
- 19:36teaching of the Word. Our minds are renewed.
- 19:39We begin to think more like God thinks.
- 19:41You got a new believer that doesn't know much about the word
- 19:43yet. They're going to make a lot of
- 19:45mistakes and do a lot of stupid things, just like we did in our
- 19:48early stages of our development in Christ.
- 19:51You got to be patient. They're going judging them and
- 19:54condemning them and giving them a list of do's and don'ts.
- 19:57The Holy Spirit will be faithful to convict them.
- 19:59And they might come up and say, you know, I'm really having a
- 20:01problem with this area in my life.
- 20:03And you can say, yeah, I used to too.
- 20:04And this is what I discovered is the Lord worked in my life and
- 20:07set me free from this besetting sin and gave me grace to become.
- 20:12A little bit more like Jesus every day.
- 20:14And, you know, I don't even think about that.
- 20:16I don't even want that anymore. I don't like it anymore.
- 20:18And so, you know, the apostles here are telling the people,
- 20:22this is the ruling here. Don't eat foods offered to
- 20:25idols. Abstain from sexual immorality
- 20:28and from things strangled and from blood.
- 20:31So the Jewish people would not eat anything that had any kind
- 20:36of trace of blood in because it would be seen as unclean.
- 20:40And so they had agape lunches. I like medium rare steak.
- 20:45You guys, every meter. You don't want to sit down with
- 20:47a kosher Jew and have a dinner and they're eating, I don't
- 20:51know, whatever they're eating a kosher and your steaks bleeding
- 20:54all over the plate. There's nothing wrong with them
- 20:56or medium rare meat, but that stumbles.
- 20:58So they would have these meals and they would try to like, OK,
- 21:02how can we have some degree of compromise on mores?
- 21:06What's right and wrong for the child of God according to the
- 21:09word of God? So the Jews, you know, they were
- 21:11brought up kosher. Like, I have this one account in
- 21:13Pittsburgh. He's a great guy.
- 21:16And I said, hey, you know, we want to try to get more business
- 21:19and we'll take you to the Capital Grill.
- 21:21He says, Clark, I can't go there.
- 21:23I'm not kosher. I said, OK, well, then you tell
- 21:25us where you want to go, and then we'll go where you want to
- 21:28go. So you want to be sensitive, You
- 21:30don't want to be judging, OK, that kind of stuff.
- 21:33So anyway, it says for Moses has throughout many generations,
- 21:38those who preach him in every city being read in the synagogue
- 21:41every Sabbath. So the the wisdom of these
- 21:46leaders at the time came down to the path that there needed to be
- 21:52this understanding that there was no need for circumcision to
- 21:56be saved. That's clarified.
- 21:58Then it please the apostles and elders with the whole church to
- 22:02send chosen men of their own company, Verse 22, to Antioch
- 22:06with Paul and Barnabas, namely Judas, who also named Barsabbas
- 22:10and Silas, leading men among the brethren.
- 22:13They wrote letter by them, the apostles, the elders and the
- 22:16brethren. This letter went out to the
- 22:17brethren who are the Gentiles and Antioch, Syria and Cilicia.
- 22:21Greetings. Since we have heard that some
- 22:24who went out from us have troubled you with words
- 22:26unsettling your souls, saying you must be circumcised and keep
- 22:31the law, to whom we gave no such commandment.
- 22:34It seemed good to us, being assembled with 1 accord, to send
- 22:38chosen men to you with our beloved Barnabas and Paul, men
- 22:43who have risked their lives through the name of our Lord
- 22:46Jesus Christ. We have therefore sent Judas and
- 22:48Silas, who will also report the same things by word of mouth.
- 22:53For it seemed good to the Holy Spirit and to us to lay upon you
- 22:56no greater burden than these necessary things, that you
- 22:59abstain from things offered to idols, from blood, from things
- 23:03strangled, and from sexual immorality.
- 23:06If you keep yourselves from these, you will do well.
- 23:09Farewell. Nothing added, nothing
- 23:12subtracted from the simplicity of the centrality of Christ and
- 23:16the gospel. So when they were sent off, they
- 23:18came to Antioch, and when they had gathered the multitude
- 23:21together, they delivered the letter, and when they had read
- 23:23it, they rejoiced over its encouragement.
- 23:26What a relief it had to be for these people now to not be
- 23:29worried about needing to get circumcised now.
- 23:33Judas and Silas themselves being prophets also exhorted and
- 23:36strengthened the brethren with many words, and after they had
- 23:39stayed there for a time, they were sent back with greetings
- 23:43from the brethren to the apostles.
- 23:45However, it seemed good to Silas to remain there.
- 23:48Paul and Barnabas also remained in Antioch teaching and
- 23:51preaching the word of the Lord with many others also.
- 23:57Thanks for joining us on today's edition of Living Waters of
- 24:00Grace, a ministry of Calvary Chapel, Westmoreland.
- 24:04Today, Pastor Clark is teaching about the book of Acts.
- 24:07And as we learn more about Acts, it becomes clear that the early
- 24:10church didn't miss a single opportunity to share the gospel.
- 24:15In nearly every chapter, you see apostles like Peter and Paul
- 24:18stepping into conversations, crowds, and crises with
- 24:22boldness, ready to proclaim the name of Jesus.
- 24:26Their example challenges us to consider how we might step into
- 24:30gospel moments in our own lives. What doors might God open this
- 24:35week for you to speak truth, offer hope, or live out your
- 24:38faith in a way that points others to Him?
- 24:41The story of Acts reminds us we are part of the same mission.
- 24:44Today, let's live with eyes open and hearts ready to respond.
- 24:49We hope you are challenged by today's message.
