- 0:01Now of the things which we have spoken, this is the sum we have
- 0:05such an high priest who is set on the right hand of the throne,
- 0:09of the majesty in the heavens, a minister of the sanctuary and of
- 0:13the true Tabernacle which the Lord pitched and not man.
- 0:18Hey listeners, this is Nick from Scripture Central, and today's
- 0:21podcast addresses the question, How does the Epistle to the
- 0:25Hebrews reflect the Israelite Temple?
- 0:30The Epistle to the Hebrews emphasizes many themes regarding
- 0:34the ancient temple that would have been intimately familiar to
- 0:37his audience. As noted by Richard D Draper and
- 0:40Michael D Rhodes, The focus on the temple highlights that the
- 0:44Temple's sacrificial system was something of a moving concern
- 0:47for the audience of Hebrews, and that this audience still
- 0:51retained a great deal of respect for the Old Covenant and the Old
- 0:54Law. Chapters 8 through 10 especially
- 0:57discuss how the sacrificial system employed in the Israelite
- 1:01temple is fulfilled by Jesus Christ's atonement.
- 1:05In doing so, Hebrews depicts Jesus as an High priest who was
- 1:09set on the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the
- 1:12heavens, a minister of the sanctuary, and of the true
- 1:16Tabernacle which the Lord pitched and not man.
- 1:20Jesus, our Great High Priest, then offered himself as an
- 1:22infinite and eternal sacrifice that would allow us to enter the
- 1:26presence of God by stating that Jesus had entered the true
- 1:31Tabernacle. The author of Hebrews is not
- 1:33saying that anything about the Mosaic Tabernacle was false,
- 1:36especially since it was Jehovah who commanded its building and
- 1:40revealed its ordinances. It means, rather, that the
- 1:43Tabernacle was but a pattern or a type of the true or real
- 1:48eternal heavenly realm. In fact, the author of Hebrews
- 1:52will show that there is much good to be had in understanding
- 1:56the earthly shadows of heavenly things as observed by Draper and
- 2:00Rhodes. Just as an outline or blueprint
- 2:03of an original source reveals much about it, so too do the
- 2:07Tabernacle. And the rituals performed
- 2:09therein, along with those who perform them, reveal much about
- 2:13the Lord and His ministry. This can be seen as the author
- 2:17of Hebrews compares Jesus with the Levitical High priest who
- 2:21oversaw the functions of the Israelite temple.
- 2:24This is especially manifest on the Day of Atonement, which was
- 2:27the one day a year that the Israelite high priest would
- 2:30enter the Holy of Holies not without blood, which he offered
- 2:34for himself and for the errors of the people.
- 2:38Having entered the Holy of Holies, the High Priest was then
- 2:41responsible for reconciling all of the House of Israel, himself
- 2:45included to the Lord. As this order of sacrifice on
- 2:50the Day of Atonement was modeled on patterns of things in the
- 2:53heavens, naturally the Heavenly Atonement would constitute a
- 2:56better sacrifice than anything the Israelites could do on
- 3:00earth. Similarly, while the High Priest
- 3:03symbolically and ritually entered God's presence by going
- 3:07into the Holy of Holies, Christ had actually entered heaven.
- 3:12Christ is not entered into the holy places made with hands
- 3:15which are the figures of the true, but into heaven itself.
- 3:19Now to appear in the presence of God.
- 3:21For us, Jesus was also without sin and could therefore perform
- 3:26this infinite and eternal sacrifice.
- 3:29By contrast, for all His Holiness, the High Priest
- 3:33himself was not without sin and therefore in need of expiation.
- 3:38Jesus's sacrifice also differed from the High Priest's sacrifice
- 3:42in another significant way. While the High Priest would have
- 3:45to perform the same sacrifice every year with the blood of
- 3:49others, Jesus was able to put away sin by the sacrifice of
- 3:54himself and it was done only once because Jesus, after he had
- 4:00offered one sacrifice for sins forever sat down on the right
- 4:04hand of God. He is greater than the Levitical
- 4:07high priests. They after all could not perform
- 4:11any sacrifice of the same caliber as Jesus had performed.
- 4:15Through his sacrifice, Jesus opened a way into heaven for all
- 4:19God's children, whereas only the Israelite High Priest could
- 4:22enter the Holy of Holies in the Israelite temple.
- 4:25It is possible for all who repent and keep their covenants
- 4:29to have boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of
- 4:33Jesus, by a new and living way which he hath consecrated for us
- 4:38through the veil, that is to say, his flesh.
- 4:42In other words, Jesus's atonement consecrates us to
- 4:45enter the holy of holies of the heavenly temple, thereby
- 4:49allowing us to enter the presence of God once more and
- 4:52serve in the same heavenly temple.
- 4:56These verses also make a comparison between the veil of
- 4:59the temple and the flesh of Jesus Christ.
- 5:02This symbolism is especially clear when we understand that
- 5:04the veil is the entrance to the presence of God, and because it
- 5:08is only through Jesus's atonement we are saved, His
- 5:12flesh would be a fitting description for the veil.
- 5:16Only through His suffering and death can we be saved and enter
- 5:20the presence of the Lord, allowing His mercy, grace, and
- 5:24power to flow into the lives of all those who would follow Him,
- 5:28bringing to them forgiveness and the ability to live acceptably
- 5:31before the Father. The temple, both ancient and
- 5:35modern, is focused on Jesus Christ.
- 5:37Everything that happens within those sacred walls is centered
- 5:41on Jesus Christ and His Atonement, providing a type and
- 5:44shadow for us to refer to as we come closer to Him.
- 5:49Similarly, the covenants we make in the temple help us learn how
- 5:52to become more like Jesus as we strive to keep them throughout
- 5:56our lives. As our great High Priest, Jesus
- 6:00is able to mediate for us before God.
- 6:03He declared I am the Way, the Truth, and the life.
- 6:06No man cometh unto the Father, but by me He is the way into the
- 6:11Holy of Holies of the heavenly temple, and it is only through
- 6:15His Atonement that we can enter the presence of the Father to
- 6:19gain eternal life. Jesus stands ever willing and
- 6:23ready to help all God's children enter His presence, and He will
- 6:27always be an advocate for those who come to Him, keep His
- 6:31commandments, and earnestly desire to become like Him.
