• 0:01
[rock music] Here we go, podcast number 36 of Chuy's Lawn Chair.
• 0:45
That's the first time people haven't talked over the introduction. You guys are like fucking professionals. [laughs] Well, you were yelling at us. You were like, "See... For the podcast. Shut up, shut up.
• 0:53
Just everybody shut up." No, it's usually just like, "Is this thing working? Am I doing this right?" [laughs] And that's usually me. "Did I turn this on? Am I fucking recording? I don't know what I'm doing anymore."
• 1:02
So anyway, um, podcast 36. Um, Becca and Barry from, um, professional riders from, uh, uh, Filthy Fifty. [laughs] I don't think, I don't think... Oh, and Clark's here. No talking, Clark. No, you're not allowed to talk.
• 1:17
No, you can't talk. Um, um, they're, they're, they're gon- they w- Filthy Fifty was last weekend. Mm-hmm. 10th anniversary. [dog barks] No. Hold on. No, stop. [laughs] Stop.
• 1:31
[dog barks] You wanna open the door and let him out? Sure. No, I'm like, no. That's... When I start talking on the... Like, he does this when I talk on the phone though, too. I'll stay. Come on, I'll stay.
• 1:41
Okay, he's fine. Now he'll, he'll stay. Now he'll lay down. Okay. Now if we just ignore him. Jesus. [laughs] Kids these days. Anyway, um, they just finished the Filthy Fifty. You both finished, right? Yep. Yeah.
• 1:50
All I saw was pictures of you guys sitting around drinking. [laughs] I saw nothing of you guys on the course. I have no- There's at least one photo of me on a bicycle. Okay, I was just gonna say there's- I...
• 1:58
Look, they cut it out yet again. I still think they, they, they, they want the very svelte, the very thin- [laughs]... active looking bicyclists. They're like, "That guy's not finishing. This is mile five."
• 2:10
[laughs] And f- for the second time, they cut me out. But they got, they got pictures of us drinking and eating, so- Yeah... it's not like [laughs] And pictures of us on the toilet.
• 2:17
Oh, so those pictures weren't you guys took. Those are pictures that they took of you guys? Yeah. Yeah. Oh, interesting. Okay, it is. I get yelled at all the time because I don't do pictures, and I really do suck at...
• 2:28
The, the last ones I just did, I literally almost, um, I- If you put your hand in front of it, it's not gonna work. [laughs] Well, the, the lens is cracked anyway. Look at it.
• 2:36
[laughs] Well, it's just on your face, so you're fine. [laughs] All righty. All right. So, um, yeah. So Filthy Fifty was last weekend. It's a 50-mile gravel road race that starts out of Lanesboro now.
• 2:50
It originally started in Stow, uh, Stewartville, which is a little town south of Rochester. And Lanesboro's like about halfway between here and Decorah. So- Yep... um, a hillier course than the old one.
• 3:01
Yeah, and well, Becca and I got...
• 3:05
W- we did the Pretty Filthy 25 before COVID, and some other Revengence riders had done the 50, 'cause, like, Paul rode the Pretty Filthy 25 this time, but last time when we did the 25, he was doing the 50 on fat bike.
• 3:21
But he, uh, officially DNF'd that. He said he finished, like, five minutes past the clock, so. That doesn't mean you DNF'd. It's, it's a free race. It's a ride. Whatever. So there's no such thing as not finishing- Mm...
• 3:34
unless you, unless you really don't finish, finish. See, that's my thought process too. Like, why would they have a DNF? Because if you make it, you make it. Right.
• 3:40
But I know there is a cutoff time the first few- Well, if-... we did out of Stewartville... if you're racing, if you're racing and you wanna be timed, then, then there's...
• 3:46
'Cause you can't make those guys sit out there all day. Yeah. I mean, we weren't racing. [laughs] I think...
• 3:49
[laughs] Well, but, but the 50s, but the 50's better than the old Le Mans one was 100 miles because the 100-mile one was really tough to- Yeah... sometimes get in before dark. And they did have a 100-miler.
• 4:00
And when, when do they start that? [dog barks] They... I thought they start at 6:30. Yeah. So they, there was a 100-mile leg. I think 78 people finished that one. Oh, I d- yeah, how long... Oh, sorry.
• 4:12
I'm just busy with the dog. How long ago did they do that? No, the 100 mile was the same day. They just did it- Yep, but-... uh, in the morning... they start earlier? Yeah. Yeah, they start earlier. They start at 10:30.
• 4:20
We got passed by every single of the last 100-milers. I looked at the stats, and there were no 100-milers after us. [laughs] They should make them do two laps of the same course. I mean, that would be fun.
• 4:31
That would be just, that would be... [laughs] If I, if- That would be cool. Oh, yeah, I was gonna say, 'cause I've looked at the course a little bit, and that would be just downright mean if you did that.
• 4:37
You- Yeah, it just means- You get your hug. Yeah. No, get back out there and do it again.
• 4:40
[laughs] So what we were trying to discuss earlier on how many of these we've done, I have, I have done the event four times, two times in Stewartville. One time, the first time I finished.
• 4:53
The second time it was snowing. I was riding for an hour without being able to feel one of my feet, and so I, I was riding with a friend. I said, "You know what? We got a cellphone. Let's call for a, a ride."
• 5:05
And so we stopped and called. He said, "Well, I have no idea what road you're on." [laughs] "So, so head in a direction and call me when you get to a tar road."
• 5:13
So we were about seven miles from the finish, and we rode about eight miles to the first tar road so we could get a ride.
• 5:19
[laughs] [laughs] So we could sit in a ditch and wait another half hour for him to give us a r- So it's like, yeah, we should have just finished that.
• 5:26
So technically I didn't finish that one, but I did ride over 50 miles on gravel that day. [laughs] I, I think technically you finished it anyway. So how many did you do when it started out of Stewartville?
• 5:37
I, so I did those two. Okay. And then I did the 25 pre-COVID with Becca. Mm-hmm. And then I did this 50. Okay. So I- And I did one out of Stewartville and then the 25 with you and then this 50. Yeah.
• 5:48
And- So my, my last one must have been your first. Yeah. Okay. The one we- Yeah... you were riding tandem- You were on the tandem... with your wife. Yeah. Yeah.
• 5:54
Yeah, and I was bombing down the hills, and you were like, "That dumb fuck's gonna die." [laughs] [laughs] Well, that, that one we had one goal, and we did it really well because there was-
• 6:05
And, and really funny 'cause we won the tandem part of it, like, the first, uh, the first time we ever went Yeah We rode, we've rode a tandem every time, but the first time they gave us a prize for, "Oh, you're the first tandem."
• 6:15
We might've been the only tandem. Uh-huh. I'm not sure. And then the next year there was a couple other guys that were a little bit faster. I don't... Maybe we won a tandem. Yeah.
• 6:22
I don't remember, but the best part was then we didn't make it for a few years, and then there was this, there was this couple that came in there and, and she was writing on a blog or something about, you know, how they, how they won it.
• 6:34
Well, then that just pissed Sue off, and then we're gonna go for the win then. [laughs] And we did catch them toward the end, and we was, and we were riding,
• 6:41
um, the first time we won it we were riding our, our fat tandem. Yeah. And then this last time we were riding the Powerade Keg. Okay.
• 6:46
So, I mean, we, actually that's a very good bike for that ride, too, so we did well on that. But, but yeah, once we got ahead of them it was like, "Pedal harder, pedal harder." [laughs] "We're, they are not catching us."
• 6:55
And you could hear her just bitching at her husband, "Get going, get going." [laughs] [laughs] But I think we didn't, we didn't win it. We just beat them. That was the only thing. Yeah.
• 7:04
Because there was, like, a couple young guys on a tandem from the cities, and they probably, I think they were in the top 10 over everybody, you know. Yeah. So they were kicking ass anyway, but...
• 7:12
So to start off, though, like, we were all, this time instead of getting up at the, you know, early in dawn and driving down there, a bunch of us stayed down there.
• 7:21
So there's a bunch of people stay at the old barn, uh, campsite. And I have a friend who was gonna ride it with his girlfriend, and I was looking forward to meeting her 'cause she's a triathlete and I've never met her.
• 7:32
And, and this is a guy I've known for, you know, 30 years, and he's been seeing this girl for two years. And, uh, I haven't met her yet just 'cause we have kids and they don't.
• 7:41
But, uh, so I was gonna stay at their cabin, and Becca was like, "I just want a place to set a tent." Then it was gonna rain,
• 7:49
and then my friend, uh, from the Twin Cities decided he wasn't coming down, but I could still use his cabin.
• 7:56
So Becca and I were gonna go s- sit and roast marshmallows and drink beer at the ca- at the camps- at the cabin. We were gonna have one beer and go. Yeah.
• 8:04
We were gonna stop in St- uh, in, in, uh, Lanesboro, pick up our, our race stuff, have one beer, and head out. But, um, [laughs] Chris- Christie and Jeremy were there, so we ended leaving, uh, Lanesboro about 11:00.
• 8:19
And, uh... Yeah. I woke up sometime at, like, 2:00 in the morning. [laughs] And I sat bolt upright. I'm like, "Where the hell am I?" I was like, "Oh, yeah, you planned this. This is exactly where you're supposed to be."
• 8:30
And, uh, it was great. That cabin was awesome. We made breakfast the next day. Yeah.
• 8:34
Barry made, uh, bacon and eggs, and then he had, he had cooked the entire thing of bacon, you know, 'cause we need to have a good base before- Oh, yeah... going out. Oh, yeah. Without a doubt.
• 8:42
He cooks the entire thing of bacon. He's like, "How many pieces of bacon you want?" When, you know, we're not, we're not piggy-wiggies.
• 8:47
So, uh, we only had, like, two or three pieces, and he's like, "I'm just gonna throw this in the fire." And I was like, "No, you're not."
• 8:53
[laughs] And wrapped it in a, in paper towel and a grocery bag and took it with us on the ride, so we'd have bacon snacks on the ride. You have to have bacon- Yeah... or sausages. Yeah, whatever.
• 9:02
[laughs] So let's back this up just a bit though, Becca, because I think the most interesting thing that happened at the cabin had to do with the, uh, the mysterious locking door and the- Oh, Jesus fucking Christ.
• 9:13
So- [laughs] There's, there's, like, a, there's, like, a... He's got a, he's got, like, a camper Porta Potti in a separate bathroom building that's got a shower. And he said, "Okay, there's a key in the cabin.
• 9:27
You open it up. Just use the deadbolt. It's just the deadbolt." So I'm like, "Okay." I got the key, went, unlocked the deadbolt, grabbed the handle, and it, I grabbed the door handle and it didn't turn.
• 9:38
I was like, "Well, what the fuck? No, it's locked." So I'm like, "Well, we're gonna have to figure this out at some point in time," and I went to bed. [laughs] Becca gets up at 6:00 in the morning.
• 9:49
No, when I woke up at 2:00, and I'm just like, "Barry. Barry. Barry. Barry, where's the bathroom? Barry, where's the bathroom? Barry, where's the bathroom?"
• 9:58
[laughs] And he tries to let me into the bathroom, and we can't fucking get into it.
• 10:01
So, like, 2:00 in the morning it wasn't a problem, but then at 6:00 in the morning when it was like, "Oh, man, it's the cold, clear light of day, and I have to, I have to poop." Whoa.
• 10:12
[laughs] And so I'm just- The pre-race poop... like, going, "Yeah, I can't get into the bathroom. I can't get into, um, anywhere," and there's a Porta John out behind the house.
• 10:23
I'm like, "Thank God there's a Porta John." I open it up, and it's a tool shed. [laughs] [laughs] So it's like, "Oh, my God."
• 10:31
And so I'm just singing this song, "No one's shitting their pants today, no one's shitting their pants today," and going as far away from, uh, the campsite as possible. I'm a true lady, Ron.
• 10:40
I don't know if you know that. [laughs] I mean, no, this cabin is on about thir- This, this is new to me. This is, this cabin is on about 30 acres just on the edge of a field.
• 10:48
So he bought, like, two acres on the edge of the field, so he had some flat area. Okay. And then the rest is in the woods. And so we're, like, we're, like, 300 yards away from the gravel road that you take to get there.
• 10:58
So it, there, this is all completely private. It's not like she's just hanging- Mm-hmm... her cheeks out but next to the road. Well, and besides that, who cares? I would've done that, though.
• 11:06
I mean, no one's shitting their pants in the area anyway. [laughs] But then, so I get up and I'm like, "Wow, I really have to poop."
• 11:10
[laughs] And I go over there, and I, like, grab the handle, and I'm like, out of frustration I just kinda, like, jerk it back and forth, and the door opens. So I was like, "Oh."
• 11:18
Yeah, it didn't, it didn't actually have the mechanism for the second handle. So it was unlocked. You just had to pull it. Pull it hard. Okay. And we weren't, and we weren't smart enough to do that.
• 11:26
[laughs] No, Barry wasn't smart enough to do that. You could've done whatever you wanted to with that door handle. [laughs] So, all right. So that was our morning- So that was the morning... was don't shit your pants.
• 11:36
Um- Make some breakfast. Go to the ride... the rain had quit 'cause we had rain S- Yeah... Friday and Sat... No, Thursday and Friday, right? Yeah, it was kinda misting just a bit- Yeah...
• 11:43
in the morning, but then, uh, by 10:00 it, it had all stopped. So we made it in. We caught up with Christina, and we all... And then, what was it, Will. Will, yeah.
• 11:55
So, uh, our, our, one of our friends couldn't make it, and so he gave his number to, to another friend. And- Jeremy... he met us there. Stop it. [laughs]I don't think it matters.
• 12:06
Again, this is f- you don't pay any races. Oh, you know, here's the thing- Do you pay to ride, ride in this? No. Yeah. Oh, you do. Okay. Yeah, so the first year it was in Lanesboro.
• 12:12
I went down there, and, um, our mutual friend who had ridden with him before had registered and couldn't go. And so I get down there, and it's just like, "I'm gonna be our mutual friend, Matt. Like, I could be Matt.
• 12:23
That's totally fine. I'm a 6'3", like [laughs] open end." [laughs] Yeah. Yeah, yeah. And, uh, and we got there, and my name was still on there from, like, 20- 2018 or 2017. Yeah. Like, just the roles have been different.
• 12:37
Like, it's, it's a different ride than when we did Stewartville, and it's a different ride than- Oh, yeah... than when we did Lanesboro. Not the actual physical ride, but, you know, it's...
• 12:46
They got, they got cool signs and shit now, so. Did... But, um, I'm, I'm, all of a sudden I'm blanking on his name, still runs it. Um- Yeah. Trent? Trent. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. [clears throat] Yeah, it, it's, um...
• 13:02
I'm w- I, I'm kind of mad I can't get to it. That, um, we were actually, while you guys were doing that, we were in Osage. Yeah. Nice. Doing the mountain bike thing. Yeah.
• 13:09
So, um, and, and not that this isn't fun 'cause we've done it a bunch, but, you know, I did it with Bounzel too, but I'm, I'm kind of over the gravel thing. I would much rather go right in the woods.
• 13:18
Give me, if we have two options, if the options are road and gravel, I'll go ride gravel. If the ri- options are anything in mountain biking, I'm going mountain biking.
• 13:27
Like, taking a poop in the woods, I will go mountain biking first. [laughs] [laughs] So yeah, so but, um, you start in downtown Lanesboro, then. Yep. And which way does it go out of town?
• 13:39
Does it- It heads, heads south and, what is it, s- south and west a little bit, and then it, 'cause it, it snakes out the highway, and then you cut off- Yeah... just outside of town onto the gravel. Oh, yeah.
• 13:53
Okay, on the south side. Yep, make, makes sense. Yeah. Yeah. And then you follow, you follow a river for a bit before you start climbing?
• 13:59
Yeah, we follow the river a bit, and there's, there's actually not that too much climbing. And then all of a sudden it's just that monster drop.
• 14:07
Or, well, I suppose there's some climbing before that, but it doesn't, I don't know. It's pretty gradual, and then- Yeah, it's pretty gradual... the, the drop is big.
• 14:13
And then there's a monster drop which apparently, like, last year somebody got hurt on it. Nobody got hurt this time.
• 14:19
But that's where the, we made our first mistake because we stopped for a beer, like, seven miles in, and, uh, people just cart, kept coming out that we knew. So first it was- [laughs]
• 14:30
Uh, uh, who was f- I forget who was first. It was, like, Bradley and Jeremy- Bradley and-... and, uh, Dustin and that whole crew Yeah. And then- So the people just kept coming out...
• 14:37
and then just about to, we're leave, gonna leave and Paul comes out. And it's like, so we were there, like, 35 minutes before we get going again. [laughs] That was a good stop.
• 14:46
I, I was- There's no such thing as a bad stop. No. I was itching to... I sh- you know what I should have done, I should have just had a second beer and, 'cause I was kind of like itching to go.
• 14:53
No, we, we ate marshmallows. We had bacon. We had beers. It was great. [laughs] It was a good stop. And the weather, and by that time the trail, the roads were probably perfect.
• 15:03
The gravel was tacky but not, and not dusty anyway. Yeah. No, it, I mean, most of the gravel was really nice. Yeah. It was packed.
• 15:11
Uh, sometimes you had a little bit, I mean, I was looking at my bike and, uh, there was very minimal s- uh, spray up. Yeah. But- There was one road that was minimum maintenance road- Yeah...
• 15:21
and that was muddy, but everything else was really good.
• 15:24
I was surprised because I only took about three or four pedal strokes where my tire completely slipped 'cause I was riding, uh, um, oh, what are those, the Vittorio Dry gravel tires.
• 15:35
[laughs] So they just have the scales on the side- Yep. Right. Yeah... and it's, it's slick down the middle. And I was like, oh, minimum, uh, minimum maintenance road.
• 15:42
Great, and then it turns out to these, be these ruddy, muddy ruts. [laughs] And I was like, okay, how are we gonna do this? Just [laughs] I got through it. Didn't fall over, so that was nice. Yeah. That's all right.
• 15:51
There's only one point where I got stuck in the mud. And don't ask me what kind of tires I have, 'cause you know I don't know.
• 15:56
And, uh, someone was behind me, and they couldn't have been more than like 10 yards behind me, and I was just like just swearing up a storm because I couldn't pedal anymore.
• 16:06
And I stepped off the bike, and I hear this guy go, "You've got this." I'm like, "No, I don't," and just moved over.
• 16:12
[laughs] Um, I remember 'cause I was just up the road from you [laughs] just laughing my ass off- Was, was the wind bad?... just going. Uh- Well, there were some times where- There were some times...
• 16:24
you were doing a headwind. Yeah. It's what, it's a fairly sheltered ride if I remember right. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, there's a lot going through, like, the, the valleys- That-...
• 16:32
where the, you're, you're in the trees, and there's hardly n- uh, there's ki- kind of no end. But at the end it kinda opens up, and there was quite a bit of, like, riding
• 16:42
slow up hills for [laughs] seems like two miles with a wind in your face. I would say- Ooh. Ooh... specif- specifically like 20, like 27 to 40 was kind of out in the open. Yeah.
• 16:54
And it was just left turn, right turn, left turn- Yeah... right turn, and just, like, going back and forth, and so that was windy. And then it did get more sheltered, but then it did get more- Yeah... hilly at the end.
• 17:03
Um- So- To put it in perspective how hilly it was, at one point, um, we're right at the, the end-ish. We're, like, three or four miles, and there's this dude walking, and he's not having a great day. Yeah.
• 17:15
And he's walking, and he's keeping pace with us. [laughs] So [laughs] that's how slow he was going. Yeah, he's walking up the hills and then going downhill and, and riding flat. Right.
• 17:25
So us riding uphill- And I was like, "Dude, are you okay? You got everything you wa- uh, need? You need, like, some water or anything?" He's like, "No, I just can't pedal uphill anymore." [laughs] I'm like, "Okay."
• 17:34
But still, I think he was only, like, two minutes behind us in the entire race. [laughs] Yeah. Like, we would look back, and there he'd be just walking up a hill.
• 17:41
There's, there is a reason, there is a reason I ride single-speed. Well, I was- There's no, no shame in walking. [laughs] Yeah.
• 17:46
I was doing r- really well until about, like, I think it was, like, tw- mile 25 when we stopped- Mm... atop the hill. We ta- stopped for our second beer stop, and everything was good.
• 17:57
And I was getting rid of all my extra water out of my trunk bag and putting it into my bottles, and I was like, "Great. Okay. My trunk bag's nearly empty." Uh, everything's good.
• 18:06
We just had some, you know, trail mix and got... I'd, like, lost, like, five pounds of weight off my bike in that stop.
• 18:13
And, uh, we started going, or well, I- So you're saying Becca ate five pounds of food off of your bike? Yeah, I ate five pounds of trail mix. Mm-hmm.
• 18:21
[laughs] But so we started going, and it was downhill, and I didn't really notice any of the thing weird.
• 18:27
And then we started going, and like, uh, s- so it was the four of us together, and, uh, the three of them just distanced me instantly. [laughs] And you can kind of...
• 18:37
I could, like, kind of see them looking back, and, like, I was just like, "What the sh- serious shit is going on here?" And so there's this long road, and I... Uh, long hill. I'm going up it. They're... Peaked it.
• 18:48
I can't even see them anymore. And I'm like, "Oh, fuck, am I gonna have to, like, abandon?" I just... What'd I bonk? And I got off my bike. [laughs] So this is after, like, two, three miles after that stop.
• 19:01
Got off my bike, and I tried to spin my, uh, rear tire, and it was just, like, wouldn't move, 'cause the brake was engaged. And so I don't know what I did to the... So I- Are we gonna talk about your mechanic skills now?
• 19:15
Oh. Oh, no. [laughs] I feel like that's the peak of this. Like- You know what? We should build up to it. [laughs] You know what? I, I loosened the brake up. I got it going. It, it was fine the rest of the race.
• 19:26
Uh, but I don't know what happened, but I, 'cause I... The bike tipped over when we stopped, but, um- That'll do it every time. Yeah. So- I mean, tipped over? Or did we just, like, lay them down?
• 19:37
'Cause, like- So, so you'd rode that far with the brake dragging, you think? Like, three miles. I think you probably- Oh, something... when you put it... Yeah, when you put it down at 25.
• 19:44
Yeah, when I put it down at 25- Yeah... I think so. Because before that, at 25, Becca was, like, uh, behind. I was kind of in th- third position, um, kind of just distancing Becca a little bit, but she was...
• 20:01
We were still kind of pacing, and the other two were, like, outpacing both of us. And then when we l- started going again, like, just all three of them paced me off. I c- I couldn't keep up with them.
• 20:11
So no, it was right there that, that the brake was on. Did, uh- Now, did you want to bring up my mechanic skills? No, no, no, no. Well, d- Oh, yeah. Soon. [laughs] I think first I have to ask this question.
• 20:23
Did you use all of your gears, Becca? Nuh-uh. I went- [laughs] No, I, I did go into the, the large chain ring one time. What about the smallest? Yeah, a lot. A lot. I went into the smallest a lot. Thank God I was here.
• 20:35
Yeah. [laughs] Thank God. Thank you, Ron. Well, now, no, so, no, so now that we... No, do you want, do you want to go from that, we're gonna... and go to the rest... You wanna go back to your brake repair work?
• 20:46
I wanna hear this story. Oh, no. No, it's not a good story. Uh- Well, it w- well, yes, it is a good story... so I will, I will say this. Neither Barry or I are mechanics. We are self-taught.
• 20:53
[laughs] Um, Ron is so good at bikes. [laughs] That's not, that's not the point. I wanna, I wanna know why after all we've talked about is nothing but hills, that you felt the need to disconnect your brakes.
• 21:08
[laughs] Well, okay. So the, um- [laughs] This is just kind of freaking me out a little bit here... no, I, I did not disconnect my brakes. So I should say this happened in my kitchen today.
• 21:18
This is not something that I did on the ride. Oh, I thought it was on the ride. No. No, no, no. No, I'm not- Oh. Man, never mind... saying- That, that was a better story the other way. Now this is just- Cool...
• 21:25
you fucking up your bike and getting- No, this is just me-... that's not a big deal... being dumb. Yeah.
• 21:28
And, uh, around, um, around m- mile, like, 40, I started noticing, like, a honking in my brakes, and I just figured, "Oh, it's just some dust and crap," and, you know, we'd been laying our bikes down.
• 21:40
And after Barry had had the my bike is stopping me from actually going and just trying to, like, hold me in, in Fillmore County this entire time, I was like, "Well, I should just clean this.
• 21:51
I'm gonna take it off," and I kind of wiped it out.
• 21:54
And then it still wasn't working, and I was like, "Well, I'm just gonna use the adjusters," and then I adjusted so hard that I disengaged, um, the actual brake components, and I screwed it up, and the only way out was through.
• 22:05
And so I started taking the whole thing apart, and I got the entire thing apart just using a manual, no YouTube. Fantastic. Wow. Yes. And then putting it back together, I failed.
• 22:16
[laughs] And so it's sitting in a Parmesan cheese container, and it's coming over here sometime this weekend. [laughs] Wait, is the cheese still in there? No. [laughs] Well, new lube. [laughs] She said, "What grease?"
• 22:30
Yeah. Parmesan cheese. That works. No. Okay, so- So back to the ride. Those, this, this, this didn't go where I thought it was gonna go because- No...
• 22:36
I made, I made her not tell the story until we got on air because I wanted to... If she took her brakes apart a- on the... I just thought- No, I did that in my kitchen today...
• 22:42
holy shit, we've got all these giant hills out there, and you're going, "I don't want brakes anymore, just twist, twist" type of thing. No. No, that- Well, by the way-...
• 22:47
that's a RAGBRAI a couple years ago is me taking my brakes apart, but we're not gonna talk about that. Mm, you can... I think you can survive RAGBRAI without...
• 22:54
With that just one brake, for sure, without either brake, you could probably survive. But- Oh, yeah... but, uh, but, but a gravel road race around Lanesville, I don't know how you could. No. No.
• 23:03
Well, I'll tell you what, my rear brake was less effective after I stopped. [laughs] Was your, was your wheel just incorrect? By design. No. Uh, I... Well, I don't know. I haven't taken it apart.
• 23:13
I was tired and, like, so today she was like, "Uh, hey, are we riding o- I'm riding over... " Or my, "I took a- apart my brake, so I can't ride the Surly. Let's ride single speed."
• 23:23
And I was like, "I'm already there," 'cause I don't know what's going on with my Surly right now. So I, I rode the State single speed. You rode the State. Oh, you- Oh, did we both screw up our Surlys? No.
• 23:33
That's so sweet. [laughs] Well, I- And they're both riding States. Yeah. We're both riding States. But you- You're just, you guys are just a fucking commercial right here. I'd be so proud. I know.
• 23:41
[laughs] We are sponsored. Yeah. Give us money. Yeah.
• 23:43
My, my wife and I needed an oil change today, so I, I threw the State in the back of the Pilot, rode to, uh, drove to, uh, Tom Cadillac Honda, and then rode my bike, uh, five miles north to my office, worked for half a day, went, rode back, got the car, and then, uh,
• 24:01
a- a- over lunch and, uh, so- Did, did they give you weird looks? What? No. One guy said, "Hey, that's a really cool bike." And I'm like, "Yeah, it's because of the bar end brakes." Well, that is cool and it's all...
• 24:11
But I, I always just, I've always found it funny that when I take a car in for an oil change or whatever, when, when I was still working, I would drop it off and, and then they'd say, "Do you need a ride?"
• 24:19
I'd go, "No," and they kinda look at you weird. "Oh, you have a ride?" "Yeah," and just pull my bike out of the back end and jump on my bike, and they always gave me the weirdest looks. Yeah.
• 24:27
Like, like, you know, I suppose because they're a car and you're on a bicycle, it's like you're the enemy or something. [laughs] Yeah. I don't know, it's so weird. No, that's the thing.
• 24:33
Going back, I got weird looks by people who were, like, cruising the lot looking for cars. Like, "Why are you biking here?"
• 24:40
And I'm like, I'm- Did you ever have the urge just to do a wheelie and get up on top and ride across the hoods? [laughs] Jesus. [laughs] All the new cars. No. That's- But that's more geared to bike than Lynnstone.
• 24:49
I'm just, I'm just, I'm just starting to drink, so I'm just [laughs] the, the stuff is hitting me now. [laughs] Um, so what were your times? Oh, um, okay. So we were 5, like 5:38, and then, like, seconds apart. Um- No.
• 25:04
No. Yeah. 6:30. 6:30. Sorry. Did you guys race at the end? 6:38. No. No. No, we did not. Oh. Okay. So that man who was walking.
• 25:11
[laughs] That man who was walking, who was having a bad day, um, you should know that there is a toilet on the course. Like, a just a, an un- Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah... a port-a-potty.
• 25:20
The, just sitting there for photo ops, right? Yeah. Yep, yep. Photo op toilet. And so the walker, who we had kinda been... 'Cause going up the hills was pretty slow.
• 25:28
Um- Did you guys take, oh, did you guys take a picture? We did. Yeah. Yeah. That's right. Okay, you have to email me that so we can post it on the podcast. Yeah. Okay.
• 25:34
Um, so, so the walker was kind of in a bad mood, and we were just chit-chatting about, like, what is, what is DNF? Like, what is the cutoff?
• 25:41
'Cause when we rode it in Stewartville, there was a cutoff, because there was DFL. Like, hey, you gotta get in before this. And there were people, like, anti-racing to get DFL, and that's a whole different thing.
• 25:53
Well- Yeah... the DFL's falling apart because of that, 'cause people actually... It used to just be if you're out fucking around, but you still kinda get in a decent time.
• 26:00
And then it became a thing 'cause they were giving away trophies- Yeah... and now people are, like, doing stupid shit like watching each other and hiding in the woods, make sure those guys pass- Yeah...
• 26:08
and sneaking back out. And not- Right... not that I've ever done anything like that. [laughs] But, but, you know. [laughs] Um, here's the thing. I am here for it. I am here for nonsense.
• 26:15
I am here for competing for the last place. I think it's hilarious. Well, I do too, but at some, at some point you gotta get done so the people that are- Sure...
• 26:22
busting their ass out there for the day need to get- Mm-hmm... to the bar. But that's why there should be a, a cutoff for time. Sure. You know? Yeah. And, and it's not to say...
• 26:29
I don't know how you would do it, because, like, obviously you complete it. But this guy was in a bad mood, and we were taking a photo and we're like, "Hey."
• 26:36
We asked the, the guy taking the photos, who's associated with the race, um, "What's the time for DNF?" He goes, "Oh, I don't really know."
• 26:44
And that, and the guy who's kinda upset because he's had a bad fucking day- [laughs]... is just like, "Well, it's marathon rules, so you guys haven't made it." And it was like, "Uh-uh." What the fuck is marathon rules?
• 26:56
[laughs] No. I wanna, I- Well, six hours... I wanna- Yeah, he said, well, six hours is j- was, like, two minutes ago, so.
• 27:00
Is he, is he the dip fuck that's putting in, uh, nasty letters to the Park Board to get rid of the tr- the trails that you're talking about in Northwest? I don't know. It's sounds like the same type of person.
• 27:09
He was, he was having a, he was having a day. No. And, like, I get it. Yeah. No. Like, there are times- I've had those days too...
• 27:13
well, the problem is, like, if you're out there and you're by yourself and you're having the day he's having, y- yeah, of course.
• 27:20
'Cause, like, it was tough sometimes, but then, you know, we get back together and it's like, okay, we ra- we all rallied and we finished.
• 27:27
Like, 'cause I, I walked up about 300 feet of this one hill, 'cause there's a [laughs] there's a valley. It's flat, and then all of a sudden the hill just hits you like a wall, and I just [laughs] lost momentum.
• 27:37
It was like, "Oh, fuck." [laughs] That's that same hill that we had to walk up two years ago. Yeah. Yeah. Or, I guess, 2019. I don't know how time works. Has the course always stayed the same?
• 27:45
I, it seems to be the same through- Cannot speak for the years we didn't do it. He's, he's always been pretty good about keeping the same course every year. Yeah. Yeah.
• 27:50
The, the, the part we rode before, 'cause last time we rode the 25, so we, we didn't ride the 50, but I think it was pretty much the same. We did see...
• 28:01
I di- I don't know what ever happened, 'cause I haven't heard, but we did see an ambulance on the course, so I don't know what happened with that guy. Yeah. They're just following us. Like, it's like vultures.
• 28:09
[laughs] Well, I thought it was funny, 'cause, like, so we- Maybe it was a hearse. [laughs] We were behind the ambulance, and we were...
• 28:16
This was, like, when we were interspersed with the 100-milers, and so we're going through this narrow, winding, you know, not even gravel road. Mm-hmm.
• 28:24
And c- I, I always think it's funny 'cause people are like, "Oh, country got them dirt roads." It's like, no, they're gravel roads. This was a dirt road. You know, this was, like, literally, like, soil and some rocks.
• 28:35
There were some big ruts in there. And- Yeah... and this ambulance is going, you know, slowly, as to not topple into the fucking gorge they were just next to.
• 28:45
And th- you got these 100-milers going, "Hey, hey," and slapping the side of the ambulance going, "Can we pass you? Can we pass you?" [laughs] It's like, oh, you guys are assholes.
• 28:55
[laughs] You just tell them, "This is a mountain bike race, and if I'm on my bike, I have my own course." [laughs] I've done that a couple times just to piss people off. Oh, I do that. Yeah. Yeah.
• 29:03
So- So, so the question was, like, what were our times? Um, so we came in. We were, we're in the last 10, definitely. Yeah. There were five people after us. I guess we were in the last nine. Yeah.
• 29:13
'Cause there were four of us. There were five people after us. Um, I am proud to say, I'm actually really proud [laughs] of this, I was the last female to cross the finish line. Yes. I'm super excited. There you go.
• 29:23
Well, I mean, so your, your times were, your time was just a little bit slower than 10 miles an hour. Yeah. And if you throw all of your stops that you guys did in there. Yeah. Especially [laughs] that 35-minute one.
• 29:34
I mean- I mean, we... Okay, so we stopped- Well, that's what I'm saying. I mean, you, you've, you've taken it from, I don't know what the... I don't, I don't do math. No, math is hard. Yeah.
• 29:41
Um, so we did a 35-minute stop, and then we did another, like, 15-minute stop, and then there was, um, like, an Amish farm where they were giving away pie and there was- That was-... someone doing guitar...
• 29:52
creepy as fuck. Awesome. No, it's not. How was that creepy? No, it was creepy. I'll tell you why. Because- Where's the toilet? The toilets. [laughs] Were creepy as shit. 'Cause I had to go use the toilet.
• 30:01
You have a thing with toilets, don't you? Man, I had- I used the toilet. I thought it was whimsical. I, I- A little side-by-side toilet. [laughs] Well, thankfully it wasn't side- You guys didn't poop next to each other?
• 30:10
What the hell? [laughs] No. Thankfully the men's wasn't side by side, 'cause I, I really had to shit, and I went in there and- They're one in front of the other. That's usually where you shit. Yeah.
• 30:19
[laughs] I took the one in front. They're tandem shitters. [laughs] Honestly, I, I would have taken, like, a Boundary Water style, uh, toilet over that-... creepy Were they, what, so what was creepy about it?
• 30:31
So- It- Well, it was like, it was like, this was like a church or something made out of like an old barn, so it was all like just, uh, like rock, fieldstone- Okay... cemented together for the walls. Sure.
• 30:43
And then you'd kinda see where, like, there used to be the old shit troughs for a milking barn or something. Yeah. And it was just, like, I don't know, just it just gave me creepy vibes from my grandpa's farm.
• 30:54
[laughs] [laughs] Sure. Do you need- And then you're sitting on this pink insulation. Do, do you, wait, do you do, tell stories about your grandpa's farm? No.
• 31:00
Do you need, do you need, do you need, [laughs] do you need a coach for you? [laughs] No. I, I'm s- I, I got the- We can lean, we can lean on the dryer... I got the hairdryer. I'm good. Put our dryers back. Okay. Um.
• 31:07
[laughs] Yeah, well, you know what you really need, though, in here is one of those sinks. We can lean back so we can get our hair washed. Oh, there used to be a cow trough right behind you, so probably could. I know.
• 31:16
[laughs] But no, the, so there's the, the pink hard insulation- Yeah... with holes cut in it over the, the, you know, dry toilet.
• 31:26
[laughs] Ser- did they just put that in for the winter when it's a little bit chillier out, so you don't- I don't know. Well, you know, you gotta go a little bit then.
• 31:30
I'll just say this, that I could've, I could have had another three inches front to back because it was hard positioning to get everything in- Oh, he's bragging... aimed it into... Yeah, right, no.
• 31:40
Barry, was it creepy or was it just inconvenient for you? It was uncomfortable. Oh, I think, I think, I think he's uncomfortable about the pink. Oh, maybe. I was, I don't care about the pink.
• 31:48
The- [laughs] You know what would've been nice? If, if the, if the seating s- uh, situation was not wet. That would've been great- Well-... um, to start... yeah.
• 31:57
But I, I was like, "Okay, it's either go here or go in the woods 'cause you gotta go," so. I blame the 100-milers. Yeah. They peed all over it. I think so. And the, and the women's was fine, was yours the same way?
• 32:07
No, mine was great. Mine was great. It was two [laughs] it was two holes side by side. And they had flowers and- In case... No, it had the same- Potpourri... pink foam insulation.
• 32:14
[laughs] And it was, you know, just over a trough, so you could see down into, like, where they had dug their toilet and- But did your bathroom have two, like, 10-year-old Amish girls selling pies?
• 32:24
[laughs] 'Cause that was the creepiest thing about the bathroom. That was outside of the bathroom. [laughs] Not as far as you were concerned.
• 32:31
Um, I will say this, when we did, the other times that I did, um, Filthy 50, there was nothing on the course. There was no water. Like, one church- Yeah... was open outside of Stewartville to get water. Yep.
• 32:43
But there was actually stuff this time.
• 32:46
There were people that, like, kinda opened up their farms, like, like very much RAGBRAI style, you know, like open up the farm- Yeah, because, because w- because last one I did, I never did, I have never been able to do one of the Lanesboro ones.
• 32:55
Mm-hmm. But Stewartville, the, the church in Fillmore was the only thing open then. Yeah. And they were swamped because everybody needed water by that time. Right. Yeah.
• 33:03
So they had, um, we saw at least two, possibly three stops, um, that were there. Yeah, 'cause there was, like, some people with...
• 33:11
I mean, we were, we had taken our time, so, uh, there was, there was a place with a f- Mm-hmm... with a fire still going- Three stops...
• 33:17
and, like, a, a big pile of, of full water bottles, you know, like Dasani water bottles. Oh, yeah. Where it's just like, and there's a sign. It's like, "Fire, water." [laughs] And they were just like, "Yeah, we're done.
• 33:26
We're watching TV." [laughs] Yeah. The Amish farm stop was, I think that was a bike company that supported it because they had par- purchased, um...
• 33:35
And these two Amish women who, who were there kinda, like, manning the pie station, they had purchased all of those. Oh. So it was like- Um... oh, wait, what, do we pay for this?
• 33:42
Um, they had purchased a whole bunch of stuff, and we're just taking like little, you know, four and a half inch- Was it, was, was it Penn?... pies. I don't think it was Penn. No. I wish I knew.
• 33:52
Who, who's the one that used to do the whiskey stop? Well, they were there, too, and they did that. Yeah, because they're, they're buddies- Um-... they're buddies with those guys. I can't think of who that is.
• 33:58
Wait, it's not, not Crank Brothers. Uh, they do the bags. Banjo Brothers. Banjo Brothers. That's it. Yeah, that's who it was. Yeah, yeah, that's who it was. That's right. So Banjo Brothers did one. Yeah.
• 34:05
And then, um, there was another bike company, and whoever did the, oh, I was so sad. We had this stop, and it was at a turn, and the turn was seriously, it was a hairpin turn that I would've missed.
• 34:18
[laughs] It was after, um, a minimum maintenance road, and so I was just tired.
• 34:22
And I was looking at my cue cards, but I would've missed this turn 'cause the sign was just faded out and you couldn't read it, and so they had set up- On the cue cards it said, "Faded sign." I, yeah.
• 34:31
Well, I wouldn't have been looking for the faded sign, but, uh- [laughs] Because it, yeah- But-... 'cause it, it was noted as faded sign. So- So you definitely wouldn't have looked for a faded sign.
• 34:38
Well, I will say this, the other one that said faded sign was not a faded sign, so there. Hmm. So, uh, they had set up, and they had, um, they had what looked like lefse out, and I was like, "Oh my God, lefse.
• 34:49
Heck yeah." And there was tortilla sandwiches and stuff. I was like, "Thank you. Thank you so much for this." That's impressive. That is so nice.
• 34:56
I was just like, it was so funny 'cause they, I was like, I was like, at that point I was like, "I need sugar, I need caffeine. Where's the Coke?" Yes. C- and, uh- Mm-hmm...
• 35:04
uh, and, uh, they were like, "Here," and there was like 36 half-full Dixie cups of Coke. And I'm like, "We're the last fucking people. [laughs] Just give me a can of Coke." But no, I had three cups of that, so. Perfect.
• 35:19
That Amish stop had little cans of Coke and whiskey. Yeah, they did. I, I, I just- That's way more support than they ever used to have. It was so much support. Yeah. Yeah. So we saw, there were at least three stops.
• 35:28
One was a farmhouse. One was, uh, what we, we, we think is Banjo Brothers- Yeah... with the Amish pies. No, it, it was Ban- Yeah. One of them was Banjo Brothers, I remember, 'cause they had a tent. Yeah.
• 35:36
And it seemed like the other one, uh, 'cause it seemed like there was also a beer stop, and it seemed like that was a bike shop, and I don't remember which one. Oh my gosh, there was a fantastic stop.
• 35:44
Uh, they had put these signs up, and it was, uh, they put these signs up along the way with, like, Hams stickers. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. Whoa. And then we stopped at a farmhouse. Oh, I was wondering- It was great...
• 35:55
'cause there was, like, Hams everywhere. Like, I didn't know if that was Trent had bought a bunch and distributed it to people. Yeah. Oh yeah, um, before we get any farther, um, I'm ready for another one.
• 36:04
Um, so not that I don't like being our, our other friends that do podcasts with us, but we are sponsored by a beer tonight. We're sponsored by, uh, Waconia Brewing. I have the Kolsch. Uh, Barry, you have the Oktoberfest?
• 36:17
Yes, sir, the Marzen style. And you have the, and Becky, you have the IPA? 90K IPA. And it's really good beer. And, and, um, our friend, uh, Amy Ratzlaff is, uh, one of the brewers there.
• 36:27
And, uh, [laughs] her and her mother and father bought our house down in, down in, uh, Decorah.
• 36:32
They, they were Luther's, they were Luther grads, and there was their, her class reunion, so they were down there for homecoming and that, and they stayed at the house, and she always politely leaves me a case of beer.
• 36:41
[laughs] The first, the first year her husband and, uh, um, Justin and her stayed there they left me, like-... two growlers, I don't know how many four-packs of beer, a couple of, couple of growlers.
• 36:52
It was like the whole fridge down in Decorah was filled with beer. It's like, awesome. Really? Now she's, we have to like back off a little bit so, but they stayed down there and the beer was fantastic.
• 36:59
Every- I've never had a bad beer from that company. You know, when I stay at your house in Decorah, I just leave you dog hair, so they're much nicer than I am.
• 37:06
[laughs] I, I don't think you have to leave dog hair down there anymore. I think it just grows because [laughs] and here's the worst part. So I went down on, I went down on Monday to do some trail maintenance.
• 37:13
I walked in the house after they've left, and it's way cleaner than I've ever cleaned it. [laughs] I'm just like, I feel so horrible.
• 37:21
I'm like, I walked in the door and I'm like, "Ah, fuck," 'cause I know, uh, we'd got back from Osage and I dropped her, I dropped, we stopped by the house and they were still there, so I didn't go in.
• 37:31
Um, so I, and then Amy texts me and said that her mom and dad were cleaning up and they were leaving, so I, I, I just kind of went back later on.
• 37:39
But I, I stopped in on Monday and it's like, God, this place is, maybe it's, uh, that clean when Sue does it, but knowing I clean the place, it's definitely not that clean. [laughs] Right? 'Cause dog hair.
• 37:46
So did you guys see my newest thing down there? Oh, you haven't been down there. No, I haven't been down since last October. I have an or- I have a, I have an organ down there now. A pump- Like a Hammond?
• 37:54
Yeah, no, [laughs] like a pump one from like the 1890s. Oh, Jesus Christ. [laughs] There's, there's a guy down in Fulton that was giving it away. I'm like, "Well, okay. It'll look cool in the house."
• 38:03
So I took it and installed it down there. I'll show you a picture of it later. I, I would love to see that.
• 38:06
It is, uh, you know, the keyed instruments, like pianos and organs, they are a curse because then you have to like move them, and then they're never in tune, and you have to get re- you have to repair them, and you're just like, you're stuck with them.
• 38:18
They're an albatross. Oh, well, no, they- They're never in tune... that's why they gave it away. Yeah. I mean, even though, even though it was like, the best I figured out, like 1800s, early 1900s, that's when it's from.
• 38:27
Yeah. It's a parlor one. I know that. It came out of Chappell. I know a little bit of the history behind it, and I don't care if it fucking works or not 'cause I don't know how to play, but this looks really cool.
• 38:33
It's really sharp looking. And then as we get drunk, well, the first thing we do is we sit down and tries to play this stupid thing. Yeah, you pump and you, you know, nobody...
• 38:41
And nobody I know knows how to play a keyed instrument, so it just- Right... doesn't do anything at all. It's hilarious.
• 38:45
[laughs] I got both my kids playing piano now, so I wanna get a Hammond organ because- Have I got a deal for you. Jeez. [laughs] I, I- I might even, I might even deliver it for you...
• 38:57
probably- But not until I'm done with it...
• 38:58
probably three months, three months ago, one of my friends had s- sent, it wasn't a B3, but it was, it was a newer, like from the '70s, Hammond organ from a church, and they were just like, "Still works. Please take it.
• 39:11
We, we don't use it." [laughs] We, uh, no, it's, it's, um, so that's where the beers from. So yeah, WaKeOnya Brewery, um, um, the beer is fantastic. I w- let's, let's flip. We're on the same. I got the Kolsch.
• 39:24
That was good. Um, I'll do an Oktoberfest this time, if you don't mind. Yeah, I'll take a Kolsch if there's another one in there. Yeah.
• 39:29
They're kind of stacked around there differently 'cause I, for once, the fridge is full again. All right. Oktoberfest? Thank you. Kolsch? Mm-hmm. I don't want the same one. I wanna try a different one. No.
• 39:43
You should- Or do you want me to have the IPA? You can have the Kolsch. No, I'm gonna have the Oktoberfest. There we go. Perfect. Um, yeah. You did it. So, um, I know. We're getting close to being done.
• 39:51
I don't know if you break for sponsor breaks. [laughs] Well, we kind of did right there. That's it. [laughs] Yeah. That's as close as we've ever had to a sponsor, too. No, yeah, that was about it.
• 39:59
I mean, we, finishing as late as we did- So you did, you finished in the daylight, though. Yeah, we did. Yeah. Yep, and, uh, and Trent gave everybody a hug at the finish. Yep, that's a deal.
• 40:07
And then we got- I was not expecting that. Oh, really? [laughs] It was Thursday. Oh. Had never gotten a hug. You shouldn't have pulled your taser out, but I'm just saying.
• 40:13
[laughs] But then we got, we got a little wooden chip, and we could take it down to the brewery, and we got a glass that, it was a, a, a, uh, 10th, uh, anniversary, or not anniversary, but 10th annual, uh, Filthy50 glass from Sylvan Brewing and a free beer.
• 40:30
How was the beer there? It's pretty good. I, I had it in the park. I haven't, I haven't gone to the brewery yet. Well, the night before we were there 'cause, and Clay Fulton was playing a solo set. Okay.
• 40:38
And so we had a couple beers there that night. Uh, no, it's a, it's a, it's a good brewery. And, and it's a nice looking one. They only had a couple of their beers that we went down for Art in the Park. Yeah.
• 40:48
And they only had a couple beers out there then, so I- I think the biggest thing is there's, you know,
• 40:53
it's Lanesboro, so if you go there on a really nice day on a Saturday, it's just gonna be full of douchebags, so you know, it's hard.
• 41:01
I feel like- No, I, no, and I know, you know, and I don't know wh- what five people listen to this podcast, but, um, Lanesboro is a cool little town. Mm-hmm. It is a cool little town.
• 41:11
But- And it's, it's a bit, um, eclectic, is that, you wanna call it? I don't know. No, the problem- Snobby.
• 41:16
No- You know, you know what it is, 'cause it's snobby fucking Minneapolis people that move down there to take over the town. Right. And what, what I'm saying is- Seriously...
• 41:22
people come down there to see the little town, and, and they s- and that's how Lanesboro's supported. Yeah. Yeah. So it's good for them.
• 41:29
It's just that, like, I know on a nice day in the s- in the summer, the, the brewery will be just packed. Sure. So it's hard to get service. Yeah.
• 41:37
And everybody's like, "Well, I, well, notes of fig and" [laughs] It's like, "Just give me a beer." [laughs] So y- you know. No, I, I, I agree 100%.
• 41:46
I, um, a buddy of mine, I know he's a buddy of mine, um, we used to go to Brothers on Wednesday mornings early for breakfast, and a guy that's, [sighs]
• 41:55
I think he teaches in Rushford, but he lives in Rochester, but he also does, um, has his own smoker and does pork. Fucking sandwiches are fantastic. Nice. Yeah, and I, I think that's gonna be his new gig.
• 42:06
I wonder if he's done school teaching 'cause he's, I would, we'd always run into him, especially when there was a snow day. He's down there eating breakfast and drinking right away 'cause he's like- Oh, right...
• 42:13
"Yes, I don't have to go drive all the way to Rushford today." [laughs] I'm, I, I'm gonna say this and it's, uh, nothing about bikes. It's about teaching and snow days.
• 42:21
Uh, pre-COVID, pre-online learning, snow days were great.
• 42:25
You just went and you, you camped out at like a Hy-Vee and just like had Hy-Vee breakfast and just like hung out with your other teacher friends and just stayed there all day or just hung out. It was great.
• 42:35
And now the expectation is, "All right, we gotta post some stuff online. You gotta talk to these kids online-" [laughs] "... because, because they're obviously just aching to get to school today."
• 42:45
And you're like- Yeah... "Mm-hmm." Well, d- you do, you do know the hockey rinks are, are forced to be closed on s- on snow days, though. No way.
• 42:51
Yes, because the school system's embarrassed that the kids drive by the schools to get to the hockey rinks. [laughs] Oh my goodness. I'm dead fucking serious because, and, and this...
• 43:01
And d- don't get me wrong, this has been going on since my kids played hockey because Tammy used to drive Casey. He, they would drive from our house here- Yeah... and they would go by Mayo High School.
• 43:10
They would go by Willow Creek and Mayo High School, the schools they go to [laughs] to get to the hockey rink, and then they'd spend all day on that.
• 43:15
And, and, and, and to be honest with you, it was, if it was a snow day, they would go do the outdoor rinks before all the rinks were at grand because they would just, your job now is to shovel the snow off the rink, and then you can play.
• 43:25
Yeah. And we would just take turns driving over there and bringing them pizzas- Well-... to the warming house, and they'd just spend the whole day down there...
• 43:30
well, the thing is, it's like snow days have gotten so ridiculous because it's all based on, you know, can we get every student to school? Well, no, you can't because
• 43:41
the buses, and they don't expect every student to have snows, boots, and things like that. But then you have a, a bunch of those high schoolers who, you know, have the old, you know, 4x4 Jimmies that they've
• 43:55
resurrected or whatever and they still get around. Every kid's got a four-wheel drive for Christ's sake. I know. You got a Subaru or whatever, and you're just getting around.
• 44:01
And yeah, everything's closed, so all the kids are out at the restaurants. Oh, yeah. I mean, snow days, if I do go into the office, I mean, 'cause I can work remotely now too, but like snow days, if you c- [laughs]
• 44:12
you never- My sister did say she wished you'd do it a little more often too, by the way. [laughs] You know, you're a liar- [laughs]... because Deb finds me enchanting. [laughs] Dude. Enchanting? Yeah.
• 44:24
Well, I used to beat her up when she was a little kid, so I can understand that.
• 44:27
[laughs] Um, but so my, my little story from last year was we were on our way to Hibbing for a trip, and we, and, and they called a snow day. Hmm.
• 44:36
And we're like, we are already at Grand Marina loading a bus, and, uh, and Robin, our, our, our secretary from the athletic office says, "That bus does not fucking move until you get the okay from the superintendent."
• 44:49
And he was like watching us, "Okay, you guys can leave at noon," 'cause that's when it was supposed to be over with. And like we had all the kids on the bus. I'm going, "They gave us a time. Let's get going."
• 44:56
And I get a text from Robin, "Don't you move that fucking bus until I tell you you can go." [laughs] So, so a- and those are her exact words, by the way. [laughs] So I'm like, "Fine."
• 45:05
So we're sitting there, and then she, she texts me, "Five, four, three, two, one. You can go." And then I text her back, "Can't. Sammy's taking a shit." [laughs] [laughs] It all comes back to poop. It, it does.
• 45:19
It's just like [laughs] that's why I had to tell it 'cause it's, we're back to poop. Anyway. So anyway, you guys had fun. We had a good time. Yeah, it was a great time. It was a great, it was a great ride.
• 45:25
You know, here's the thing. I n- I, um, the, the morning of, I really thought like, "Why the hell am I doing this?" 'Cause I know I can do 50 miles, 'cause I know I can do 100 miles.
• 45:33
Like I, I, I've done 100 miles on the road. It's can I do all the hills, and can I do the fact that I'm just gonna be crawling up the hill and then I'm gonna be tired?
• 45:43
And yeah, you can, 'cause the hills are never as bad as you think they are. Like, if you have to walk, you have to walk. That's not a big deal. No. I mean, and, and I, and I agree.
• 45:52
I do have an itch to go do it again since it's down there and I've never done that one. Mm-hmm. And I, and I, I have that- It's gorgeous. It's super gorgeous...
• 46:00
I had that, well, right, I had that feeling about gravel though. Yeah. I've done it. I've done a 50. I've done 100. I've done 150 on gravel, and gravel is no fun to me. Gravel- I'll tell you what though...
• 46:10
gravel's, gravel's just like a little more d- These, these gravel roads around Lanesboro, uh, there's way more windy roads through valleys and through forest- Mm... than there used to be over by Stewartville.
• 46:22
'Cause Stewartville- Yeah... you felt like you were dri- other than like six miles of it, you feel like you're just riding the, the, the, the township grid lines, you know? You're just like, oh- Yeah... straight.
• 46:33
And, and it's, and it's- But- As soon as you're up on top, you're in farmland, so you're just driving... right.
• 46:37
But I mean, you do have the farmland, you know, kind of at the end, but most of it, man, there's a, there's just a lot of scenery that you, you don't expect, and you kind of feel like, "God, we feel like we're miles away from any city down here," 'cause we're- Yeah, then you look at the map and you're [laughs] like, "We're not that far away."
• 46:54
Like, oh, two miles there's a highway, but yeah, we'd had, we didn't see it. No, that's awesome. That's great. So yeah. So it's always the same weekend. It's always the third weekend in October. Is that sound right? Oh.
• 47:05
Second weekend? Second weekend. Second weekend in October. Yeah. Yeah. Um, it's called Filthy 50 if anybody's interested in doing it. It's, it is a lot of fun. I- Yep... we did it for years.
• 47:12
And if you're, if you're looking for it on the internet, do Filthy 50 gravel bike race, because there's a bunch of other Filthy 50 workout stuff that- But you spend more time watching that than the- No, it's- You liar...
• 47:23
there's like, no, there's a- His computer doesn't work anymore. Yeah. It's just like dead static, so. [laughs] It just shut down. [laughs] The Filthy 50, there's like some Filthy 50, uh,
• 47:32
what are, what's the weird workouts where they're flipping tires and whipping ropes around? I don't know. Oh, like the CrossFit stuff? Yeah, CrossFit. Okay.
• 47:40
There's like a Filthy 50 CrossFit thing, and that's big, but Filthy 50 gravel bike race. Just look for that in Lanesboro and you can find it.
• 47:47
But no, I, after finishing it, I, I felt really good, and I was like, "I'm, I'm kind of excited 'cause I'm doing my, um, RAGBRAI for the first time next year," so, uh- Oh, yeah. This is perfect training for RAGBRAI.
• 48:00
No, I'm- Months and months and months away. I'm, no, I'm not saying it was perfect training. It was just, it kind of got me feeling like, "Yeah, okay, I can still do this stuff in my advanced age."
• 48:09
Well, can you do this- I will say- Can you do this seven days in a row is the question. Yeah. I will say that we kind of ran our day like a RAGBRAI day. No, it sounds like it.
• 48:19
So, you know, we, we- Which, which, which would make it awesome. I don't- Yeah... I don't think we... Well, first of all, Sue doesn't drink, so she's, and she's, once she's on the bike, she doesn't wanna stop.
• 48:26
So we, you know, had a couple of goo parties along the way, and that was about it.
• 48:30
We really don't stop, so I think we were- So I'll say at, at one point, uh, there was a photographer who had been on the road, and he was just, like, finishing up, and it was becoming really apparent that we were at the end, and we knew that we were kind of near the end of, of the 50.
• 48:45
Like, all the 25s had gone off. Um, once we started getting passed by all the 100s, it was like, "Yep, we are at the end of the 50."
• 48:52
There were only five people behind us, and this photographer came up to us and he goes, "Oh, so this is party pace, huh?" And we're like, "Yeah, we're not winning any prizes today." He goes, "No, I think you are."
• 49:03
And it's like, "Yeah, we're absolutely winning the best prize," which is- Having a good time.
• 49:08
[laughs] You know, when we did the, when we did the El Monzo, there were guys, I don't remember where they're from, but they would pull over and stop and do, like, the little Sternos, and make lunch.
• 49:17
I- I mean, they were, they were not... They were obviously not racing. They were fully packed. Like, they stayed in the campgrounds in, in Forestville. Yeah. And then they...
• 49:24
But they, but they had another pack that they took with them on their bikes when they did the ride. You'd bump into them along... And they're fairly fast guys, really, and, and girls on their bikes.
• 49:31
But they would just, like, pull over and make noodles or something for the ride, and keep going. So they're, like, Danish, or...? [laughs] I don't know. Could have been. But I mean, that, that...
• 49:40
it's, I think you guys, I think you guys did it the right way. I mean, I, I, I don't have a, I don't have an inkling of racing at all anymore. I, I did too many years of that.
• 49:48
I, I have, I have a hard time being competitive even playing hockey, unless I get pissed at myself, so I- No. [laughs] I, I [laughs] I, like I said, we were...
• 49:55
I was kind of like, "Eh, I hope we're officially timed, but not a big deal." You know? Yeah. Speaking of which, you guys realize that I canceled out of a hockey game to do this podcast? Aw. Aw. That's really sweet.
• 50:06
That's, [laughs] that's how bad I'm playing right now. [laughs] Well, then, then, then you really, then you really do need this. So I brought- What's this? I brought you a present. Oh. Oh. Oh, is this the sticker?
• 50:13
It's the sticker. It's the inappropriate present, but you have to describe it for the podcast. Okay. Okay, thank you. No, I think you need to put a picture on it on the- Oh, the picture's going up for sure. Yeah.
• 50:20
Oh, this is definitely you. I've seen that butt before. [laughs] So this is a, um, granny-painted topless... I can't tell if the hair's pink or... Is it? Oh, it is pink hair. Wait a minute. Are you colorblind?
• 50:34
That's purple. No. I think it's purple. Is it purple? I wouldn't- Yeah. I think it's pink. It's dark over here in the corner. Wait, which hair? [laughs] Uh, is this, is this... Oh, no, ugh. It's a geared bike.
• 50:43
It's a geared bike. Yes. It's my, it's my Surly. Oh, it is your Surly. Yeah. Okay. Yeah. These are awesome. I will post a picture of this along with- Yeah... everything.
• 50:50
Hopefully, like, the last podcast, I did half of my pictures. For some reason, I have a corrupted file, and they all went to shit, so [laughs] I sent two pictures over. Yeah.
• 50:57
So I will say, once you post it, um, the Rochester Sticker Club made those stickers for me. And- There's a Rochester Sticker Club? There's a Rochester Sticker Club. Find it on Instagram. Will they do our stickers for us?
• 51:08
Um, if- What do they, what-... you get a hold of them... what do they charge you? Well, okay. So Rochester Sticker Club is a sticker trade kinda thing. Well, find it on Instagram. Oh. You can link it. They're super fun.
• 51:19
Um, Rosie, who runs it, is really, really awesome. And basically she just looks out for sticker deals, makes a bunch of stickers, um, and then just trades them kind of in- That's cool...
• 51:32
kinda nationwide, which is really cool. Like, sends them out via mail- Yeah... which is fun. And- But she made a bunch of those. Um, that's a drawing that I did. Um- You drew this? I drew that, yeah.
• 51:42
I mean, I've seen your drawings before. This is awesome. Yeah. So it's a drawing that I did for, uh, a September ride that I hosted, and Rosie made them into stickers.
• 51:52
And she's just like, "I have a present for you," and it was, like, literally 40 stickers. And there's some up in Milwaukee. Nice.
• 51:58
And currently there's some stickers that are over in, uh, Poland, 'cause I gave some to Aaron. Wow. That's cool. So Aaron took some to Poland, and he's taking [laughs] some to Ukraine.
• 52:09
But should probably not post, uh- Are, are you pla- are you planning a trip to Decorah anytime soon? I can put some in Decorah. Well, no, no, I mean you have to do the stop sign out of, outside of, uh, Ham Lake.
• 52:19
The one- I know, the one with the Revengeance skull and stickers? Yeah, yeah. Yeah. Well, they had to replace the stop sign, so our Fuck Allcott one is gone, and some of the other ones are gone.
• 52:26
But we put new ones up on top of them. Well, then I will definitely go down- Yeah... and start putting some of those up. I don't remember, I don't remember if the Revengeance one's still there or not.
• 52:32
I'm planning mine to go into the new, um, drinking establishment in Rochester, so. Yeah. So there's, uh, I think right now- Well, I'll still get the fuck out of that place... it's in Taco Jed and Thesis. Yeah. Nice.
• 52:42
Um, but yeah, I'll take some down to Decorah. So she- Yeah... uh, Rochester Sticker Club ordered a whole bunch of them. You are gonna post them. You'll, you'll see them. And they're just silly and stupid.
• 52:53
[laughs] Oh, by the way, Ron, I'm, I'm... we're hoping we can get a space that's suitable for podcasting, in, like, the back corner.
• 53:00
Hey, have you seen there's a guy in town that, that has, like, a podcasting studio, looks really cool, and doesn't know how to run it? No. Where is he? He posted on Facebook. He's looking for somebody to run it.
• 53:10
I don't know where it is. I didn't look at it any further. I'm like- Well, you're unemployed. Oh, yeah. [laughs] I believe his pronouns are tired.
• 53:16
I worked, I, I, I shipped my first bike out of here at 8:30 this morning, and I was... at 10:30 I was at the, at the garage door place unloading a semi of garage doors. I worked my ass off today. I'll tell you what.
• 53:27
After we're done- Took a nap... with this podcast- Took a nap at 3:00... I think both Becca and I wanna order some state stuff from you. Oh. Oh, you want, you want the new bikes? I want the, I want the seat.
• 53:36
You want the seat? Okay. I, I- [laughs] I, I want the bottle cage. [laughs] Yeah. I, I just, I, I- Oh, man, that bottle cage is good... I think, I think Greg, I think Greg and I decided that we're going to buy a bike.
• 53:45
Yeah. And then just whoever, which one of us sells it, because n- you, you could- Well, there's two, there's two bikes though... you couldn't ride it. Nope. Uh- I could not ride it. You could not ride it.
• 53:52
  You can't ride it. Yeah. I mean, there's the black one, but then there's... Yeah, the other one I don't get. I mean, I get it's a thing, but I don't really- Yeah... I don't, I don't under- I, I g- it's beyond me.
• 54:02
But the other one- It's called-... the other one- It's called Art, Ron... the other one's got too many F-U's on it even for me. [laughs] That's saying something. Well, I know. I mean, it's not that I don't...
• 54:10
I'm not, I don't mind it and I won't ride it, but it's just, like- Yeah... I still have to be aware of children that don't think I'm as big of an asshole as I really am. [laughs] What... Can't the...
• 54:22
I don't think they... No, that's not a true statement. Oh, yes. Yes, it is. [laughs] Yeah. [laughs] It, it, it's, uh, um, um, sadly, sadly, sadly, there's kids that actually look up to me.
• 54:34
[laughs] I'm like, "This can't be fucking true." This is what I tell, this is what I tell older kids, 'cause I'm a teacher as well.
• 54:39
Um, which is, "They look up to you, not just 'cause you're taller, but because they respect you." Yes. Yeah. And then, and I... So I have to be careful. Besides that, there's a new plan.
• 54:48
I just, I just spent, I spent a weekend in, uh, last weekend in, uh... Wait, was it last weekend? You guys remember? Grand Forks? Yes. The home of North Dakota Fighting... Oh, God. And they say Fighting Sioux.
• 55:02
Of course they do. They... Nobody says Hawks. When they, when the announcement- I thought they changed team names. Yeah, but they did- They did... but nobody up there gives a shit.
• 55:08
N- most of the stuff's is just North Dakota. And even the one coach that, assistant coach says, he goes, "Nah- Can't do it, can't say Sioux, so we just say North Dakota.
• 55:16
He goes, "That's it, this team is just North Dakota now." They don't, there's no, nothing else to it. They, nobody c- nobody's going with Fighting Hawks.
• 55:21
When the, when the announcer, like for power play, gets ready to say, you know, "Another's Fighting," and he say, well, to say Hawks, he goes, "Fighting-" Yeah... and then alls you hear is the entire crowd say, "Sioux."
• 55:31
And I'm pretty sure [laughs] that guy said Sioux one time too.
• 55:35
[laughs] So- Here's the thing, that, that stuff's gonna age out, and like, like right now it's in the- Well, the weird thing- Like, any change is weird like that, but it's gonna age out and then generations...
• 55:45
And by generations you're talking about like four years, and four years, and four years. I think, yeah. So, like in 16 years- I- Which seems, like, crazy, but like in 16 years it'll be the Hawks. I, no.
• 55:54
I, no, I don't think it'll be. I think, I think it's gonna go the other way. At least in sports, I think it's just gonna be the city or state you're in. Oh, yeah? It's, it's gonna go that way.
• 56:01
They're gonna get rid of the mascot-y thing. I think that's all gonna go to the wayside. Really? I, I, yep.
• 56:05
I think it's just gonna go by the, you're gonna have colors and you're gonna have North Dakota, you know, U- UND type of thing or something like that. You're not gonna- Look, I'm always gonna be a Bison fan, so.
• 56:13
Bison, Bison. Oh, they lost. Yeah, I know they lost. [laughs] That was the sick part. We had a foot... We, we stayed in the hotel that was attached to the football field. Oh, yeah? The, the, uh, UND football field.
• 56:23
And we got a tour. I, the, I should probably get going, but we d- we got a tour there of the, of the, of the Fighting Sioux's locker room. Yeah. I got lost trying to get out of there. [laughs] This thing is giant.
• 56:34
Have they- It's labyrinthine. Wait, wait, wait. Have they gotten rid of all the Sioux- No... tiles? No, no, no, no. My understanding is
• 56:41
if they remove any of the Sioux stuff on that building, that building will be shut down and they won't be able to use it. Right.
• 56:46
So if anybody doesn't know this, the, the, the guy who built it, I've heard his name- Ralph Engelstad... yeah. He, every other...
• 56:53
So it was like a, a s- checkerboard tile, so e- half the tiles are engraved with the Fighting Sioux logo. The Fighting Sioux logo- Yeah...
• 57:02
the, the, b- which I would call for easiest way to describe it is the Blackhawk head. From, from Chicago Blackhawks? Yeah. It's the same, it's the same basic helmet, or face.
• 57:10
And it's, when you walk in the main door, there's a great big one in there. Down the hallways it's up and down. In there, when you walk from the hallway into their dressing room, the, all their jerseys are hanging there.
• 57:21
So it's got from their first sweater all the way through the j- their present jerseys. So they're all listed. Yeah. So, I mean, they're there.
• 57:27
But I mean, y- everywhere you go, you're right, there's a, there's a Fighting Sioux logo someplace, you know. Um, they don't put it in the ice anymore, of course, but, but, um- Look, here's the thing.
• 57:36
I'm a Bison fan simply because I went to NDSU. [laughs] So it's not that I'm some weird sports guy. No, no. And it was, and it was, and, and, and I'll say this much for them.
• 57:44
The North Dakota fans, either school, were fanta- I mean, they're just loyal to their teams. It's insanely how loyal they are. Mm.
• 57:51
Um, obnoxiously loyal if you ask me, especially 'cause I go to Frozen Four every year and, and when the, when the North Dakota fans are there, they drive me insane. That's why, that's why I didn't wanna go to the game.
• 58:01
Yeah. But it's North Dakota, it's not NDSU- No... 'cause there's no hockey team in there. Well, yeah. Yeah. And, and then what was it? Um, North Dakota beat them for the first time in six years.
• 58:11
I, I f- I don't think they've played them for six years. Oh, maybe that's what it was. Because, um, so
• 58:18
that actually for the longest time was because of some different issues, was the longest, um, the, the longest sports, or uninterrupted sports, uh, rivalry in the world. Oh, really?
• 58:34
Because there was enough farmers that during World War II- [gasps] Yeah... then they were ag, both ag schools, so they could still do games during World War II.
• 58:43
So they, yeah, so they don't have, they don't have the asterisks that said, "Shut down because of"- World War II... yeah, yeah, okay.
• 58:48
So because of that, they were, like, the m- most, you know, the longest running, you know, uninterrupted annual, uh... But then, uh, UND went D1 and then NDSU went...
• 59:01
I don't, I don't know how the divisions work in college. It's all weird. Mountain West or whatever they call it. But- Yeah... and now they're back playing each other.
• 59:07
But there's a big, basically there, you know the Buffalo Head Nickel where one side's the Indian and one side's the buffalo? Mm-hmm. There is a s- a nickel that is this big.
• 59:15
It weighs like 300 pounds, that would be passed back and forth between NDSU and UND. Oh, I didn't go to the game so I don't know that that happened or not. Maybe it didn't.
• 59:25
Well, the thing is, though, okay, the, the, now they're not the Sioux, so now they're the Hawks, so I don't know where- Oh... I don't know where that nickel is.
• 59:31
But the thing is, you know- Probably in the president's safe... students used to steal it back and forth, of course. And, uh, no, it was kind of a fun thing, but of course that's, that's gone now. Fun's, fun's gone now.
• 59:42
Fun's gone. All right. Um, I think it's time to shut this baby down. Yeah. We're at, we're at an hour. Um, thanks you guys for coming over. Um, I can play- Thank you for having us... I think I can play music again.
• 59:49
Oh yeah, no, it was fun. Good. I'm glad you guys had a good time on the ride. That's the big thing. Well, we did. Yeah. No, we just have to figure out- And we'll all be there next year. Uh, no.
• 59:55
'Cause I, uh- [laughs] Well, I don't know. I mean, I mean, if they work out opposite weekends, you guys really should go to Osage with us 'cause you would have fun riding there too.
• 1:00:02
That's- You know what I want- Is it mountain biking? That's... Huh? Is it mountain biking? Yeah, but it's fun mountain biking. You, uh, we'll, we'll find you a bike, believe me.
• 1:00:08
[laughs] I was gonna say, can I ride a, just I, I have a fat bike but other than that. Yeah, no there, no, and, and this one is called Fattober, so there's a lot of guys on their fat bikes. Oh. Yeah. Cool.
• 1:00:16
I don't think they've ever had snow during it, but maybe... Well, they must have had the one year, but- I mean, you can ride fat bikes without snow... yeah. And plus, plus they have a giant sock sale. Oh, God.
• 1:00:25
I love socks. Do you? I do. Fox Valley Sock Sale was on. Ask Jeremy about it. It was insane. We went down there on Friday. It's, it's, it's, z- you like fall into the pattern.
• 1:00:35
Pretty new thing, you know, I had like a half a big grocery bag full of socks and I didn't even want any. [laughs] Barry's a sock addict. I, I- Oh, dude, you would love it down there...
• 1:00:44
I, well, I used to be a sock addict. I'll go- I'm, I'm kind of a lapsed sock addict. If I go down there I could get restarted real quick, so. [laughs] Yeah. All right. Let's get out of here. Thanks, you guys.
• 1:00:52
Let's see if we can do this right now. [outro music]
