- 0:02Speaker 1: Life Audio. Well, howdy and good morning, all of you
- 0:11Speaker 1: faithful listeners. Thank you for being here on the Bible
- 0:14Speaker 1: Explained podcast and for sharing a delicious cup of coffee
- 0:17Speaker 1: with me or cup of tea as we discuss the
- 0:20Speaker 1: next portion of 1 Peter 3. So we're going to
- 0:23Speaker 1: see about the husbands today. How does a husband submit
- 0:26Speaker 1: to God? in his marriage relationship. Now I'll just tell
- 0:30Speaker 1: you guys straight out, it's not the same as the woman's.
- 0:32Speaker 1: The woman's role in all of this is submission, but
- 0:35Speaker 1: the man's role is understanding and honoring. So we will
- 0:40Speaker 1: get into this first topic, but before we do that,
- 0:42Speaker 1: please listen to one of my sponsors. All right, so
- 0:46Speaker 1: this is the longest passage I think I've ever read
- 0:49Speaker 1: in scripture before. It is one verse. That was a joke.
- 0:55Speaker 1: In fact, I don't think I've ever talked about just
- 0:57Speaker 1: one verse. Usually with a short portion, it's like three
- 1:00Speaker 1: or four, maybe two or three verses. But no, we
- 1:03Speaker 1: are talking about one verse today. So grab your Bible
- 1:07Speaker 1: out of the version that you prefer and turn to
- 1:09Speaker 1: 1 Peter 3, 7. I'll be reading this verse from
- 1:12Speaker 1: the W.E.B. You husbands, in the same way, live with
- 1:17Speaker 1: your wives according to knowledge, giving honor to the woman
- 1:20Speaker 1: as to the weaker vessel, as also being joint heirs
- 1:23Speaker 1: of the grace of life. that your prayers may not
- 1:25Speaker 1: be hindered. In the past few days on the podcast,
- 1:30Speaker 1: we've been talking about Peter's call to submission, how all
- 1:34Speaker 1: Christians must submit to Christ. And we actually do this
- 1:37Speaker 1: by submitting to other people, by being kind and compassionate
- 1:41Speaker 1: and understanding in whatever area of life we find ourselves in.
- 1:46Speaker 1: So Peter already mentioned three categories of things. The first
- 1:49Speaker 1: one in 1 Peter 2 says, was submission to government authorities.
- 1:54Speaker 1: And we talked about how we can do that while
- 1:56Speaker 1: not compromising on our faith. How do you submit to
- 2:00Speaker 1: an evil government or a government that we really hate
- 2:03Speaker 1: or that's doing bad things while still maintaining our faith
- 2:07Speaker 1: in Christ? So that was, I think, two weeks ago
- 2:10Speaker 1: that we talked about that. Then we talked about how
- 2:13Speaker 1: servants should submit to their masters. Now, of course, nowadays,
- 2:17Speaker 1: we don't really have slavery the same way that it
- 2:20Speaker 1: existed in the days of Peter, thankfully, because in the
- 2:23Speaker 1: days of Peter, 50% of the populace was a slave
- 2:27Speaker 1: of some sort. So these slaves, if they were Christian,
- 2:31Speaker 1: needed to learn how to submit to their earthly masters,
- 2:35Speaker 1: while again, not compromising their faith in Christ. And then
- 2:38Speaker 1: the last category that Peter talks about is the marriage
- 2:42Speaker 1: relationship how we are to submit to God by submitting
- 2:46Speaker 1: to our spouse. And we talked first about wives, that
- 2:50Speaker 1: wives can submit to God by submitting to their own husbands, actually,
- 2:55Speaker 1: because if any of them don't obey the word, they
- 2:58Speaker 1: may be won over by the behavior of their wives
- 3:01Speaker 1: without a word. So wives essentially can play a part
- 3:04Speaker 1: in their husband's salvation. But even if a Christian wife
- 3:08Speaker 1: is married to a Christian husband, there still should be
- 3:11Speaker 1: submission in that relationship. because that is how things have
- 3:15Speaker 1: been ordained here on earth. But we'll get more to
- 3:17Speaker 1: that point in a moment, starting in 1 Peter 3,
- 3:20Speaker 1: verse 7. It says, you husbands in the same way.
- 3:26Speaker 1: So we've seen that phrase a couple times now. Actually,
- 3:29Speaker 1: in verse 1, before Peter starts talking to the wives,
- 3:32Speaker 1: he says, in the same way, wives. So what is
- 3:35Speaker 1: this same way? Well, again, it's all the talk of
- 3:38Speaker 1: submission to God in our relationships that we have with
- 3:42Speaker 1: other people. How can we submit to God in every
- 3:45Speaker 1: aspect of our lives? So for husbands in the marriage relationship,
- 3:50Speaker 1: here's how they submit to God. By living with your
- 3:53Speaker 1: wives according to knowledge, giving honor to the woman as
- 3:57Speaker 1: to the weaker vessel, as being joint heirs of the
- 4:00Speaker 1: grace of life, that your prayers may not be hindered.
- 4:03Speaker 1: And that is the only thing that Peter says to
- 4:05Speaker 1: the husbands. There's only one verse for the husbands here.
- 4:08Speaker 1: But there is so much information in this verse as
- 4:11Speaker 1: to what husbands should do and how they should treat
- 4:13Speaker 1: their wives in a godly sort of way. It says
- 4:17Speaker 1: first to live with your wives according to knowledge. Depending
- 4:21Speaker 1: on the version you read, it might say something like
- 4:24Speaker 1: live with your wives in an understanding way. I think
- 4:27Speaker 1: that's actually the NLT version. I kind of wish that
- 4:30Speaker 1: I would have brought my husband on for this podcast episode,
- 4:33Speaker 1: but I didn't. So I apologize to you men ahead
- 4:36Speaker 1: of time if I am making assumptions that may not
- 4:40Speaker 1: be correct about your guys's nature. But I'm going to
- 4:44Speaker 1: do the best I can as a wife of 11
- 4:47Speaker 1: and a half years. But sometimes when I talk to
- 4:50Speaker 1: my husband about an issue, he just doesn't seem to
- 4:54Speaker 1: understand or get it. because he thinks about it in
- 4:57Speaker 1: a very different way. And, you know, I've even heard
- 4:59Speaker 1: men say things like that they just don't understand their wives,
- 5:03Speaker 1: you know, something that seemed right the first day is
- 5:06Speaker 1: wrong the second day. And, you know, they just seem
- 5:08Speaker 1: to change their minds so often. And women are so
- 5:11Speaker 1: complicated and very, very hard to understand. This could cause
- 5:15Speaker 1: a lot of men to pull back from his marriage,
- 5:18Speaker 1: maybe go to work more often so that he doesn't
- 5:21Speaker 1: have to be home as often. Maybe stop asking questions,
- 5:25Speaker 1: stop trying to pursue a relationship with his wife. If
- 5:29Speaker 1: he has a tendency toward lust, he might go out
- 5:32Speaker 1: and try to find somebody that he thinks will fulfill
- 5:35Speaker 1: his needs better. And these are all things that Peter
- 5:38Speaker 1: is encouraging these men just not to do. To instead
- 5:43Speaker 1: pursue a relationship with the wife in knowledge and in understanding.
- 5:48Speaker 1: And you might be like, well, Jen, that seems so
- 5:50Speaker 1: unfair because when I get home at night, My life
- 5:53Speaker 1: is miserable. You know, my wife is naggy and she's
- 5:55Speaker 1: complaining all the time. And it just feels like a
- 5:58Speaker 1: dark cloud is over my house. And I want to
- 6:02Speaker 1: retreat somewhere else. I get that. And I'm not trying
- 6:04Speaker 1: to downplay any of that. But remember what Peter is
- 6:08Speaker 1: talking about with all of this. In each of these situations,
- 6:11Speaker 1: when it comes to submission to the government, submission to
- 6:15Speaker 1: an earthly master who may be cruel, submission in the
- 6:19Speaker 1: marriage relationship to somebody who could be very difficult, In
- 6:23Speaker 1: all three of these situations, he is telling us that
- 6:26Speaker 1: sometimes it is better to put the spiritual well-being of
- 6:31Speaker 1: another person ahead of our personal comfort. So if we
- 6:36Speaker 1: love Jesus and we love our spouses, even though they
- 6:39Speaker 1: are difficult and condescending and hard to be around, we
- 6:44Speaker 1: can still show them the love of Jesus, even though
- 6:47Speaker 1: it is difficult and painful. I can tell you that
- 6:50Speaker 1: the times when my husband and I have fought in
- 6:53Speaker 1: the past, those are some of the darkest, most depressing
- 6:56Speaker 1: times of my life. Even with all of the health
- 7:00Speaker 1: concerns I've had over the years, I would honestly rather
- 7:03Speaker 1: have health concerns than fight with my husband. That is
- 7:07Speaker 1: how much I hate being in conflict with my spouse.
- 7:10Speaker 1: And I know that many of you listening to this
- 7:13Speaker 1: can feel and understand that exact same thing. You hate
- 7:16Speaker 1: the conflict. You hate when your spouse is disrespectful to
- 7:20Speaker 1: you or doesn't treat you with kindness or puts hers
- 7:24Speaker 1: or his needs above yours. These things are so hard
- 7:29Speaker 1: to handle. And yet Peter is actually encouraging us for
- 7:33Speaker 1: the sake of the gospel message to show love to
- 7:37Speaker 1: our spouses who are being very difficult. And in the
- 7:41Speaker 1: case of husbands right here, That means to live with
- 7:44Speaker 1: your wives according to knowledge, to live with them in
- 7:48Speaker 1: an understanding way, not to pull away from them or
- 7:52Speaker 1: try to find somebody better or just say, I'm the
- 7:54Speaker 1: man of the house and I can do what I want. No,
- 7:56Speaker 1: to treat your wives, even if they're difficult, with respect.
- 8:01Speaker 1: And for both cases, you know, I don't believe that
- 8:04Speaker 1: Peter is saying if somebody is beating the tar out
- 8:08Speaker 1: of you, that you need to stay in that relationship
- 8:11Speaker 1: and continue on with the abuse and You know, never
- 8:15Speaker 1: protect yourself or your children. And by the way, both
- 8:18Speaker 1: women and men can be caught up in physically abusive relationships. Absolutely.
- 8:24Speaker 1: But I don't think that's what Peter is saying here.
- 8:25Speaker 1: I do think you should protect yourself if you're in
- 8:28Speaker 1: a physically abusive relationship. And if your spouse sleeps with
- 8:32Speaker 1: another person, then those are the grounds in scripture in
- 8:35Speaker 1: which you can get divorced in the eyes of God.
- 8:39Speaker 1: I think what he's saying is if you live with
- 8:41Speaker 1: somebody who is difficult, who is not a Christian, who
- 8:45Speaker 1: does not live the way that they should be living
- 8:47Speaker 1: and maybe is insulting or condescending or mistreats you in
- 8:52Speaker 1: some way, is there a chance that you could be
- 8:54Speaker 1: a light to that person? Because you obviously loved that
- 8:58Speaker 1: person when you married them, right? So If you love
- 9:01Speaker 1: that person and you also love Jesus, then you're going
- 9:04Speaker 1: to want your spouse to experience the love of Jesus also,
- 9:09Speaker 1: especially if they do not. Now, hopefully both spouses are
- 9:12Speaker 1: Christians and a lot of these issues will go away
- 9:15Speaker 1: because if the husband is doing what scripture tells him
- 9:18Speaker 1: to do by loving his wife and living with her
- 9:21Speaker 1: in an understanding way and giving honor to her and
- 9:24Speaker 1: all these things, and the wife is showing respect to
- 9:27Speaker 1: her husband and letting him be the head and not
- 9:31Speaker 1: talking down to him and doing what scripture tells her
- 9:34Speaker 1: to do, then that makes for an excellent marriage relationship.
- 9:38Speaker 1: But unfortunately, because of the fallen sin nature, that is
- 9:42Speaker 1: just not how things are. You know, because if you
- 9:45Speaker 1: go back to the story in Genesis chapter 3, when
- 9:48Speaker 1: the man and the woman fell, their marriage relationship was
- 9:51Speaker 1: immediately affected. because the husband blames his wife for the
- 9:56Speaker 1: sins that he committed. And then as part of the curse,
- 10:00Speaker 1: God told the man and the woman that there's going
- 10:03Speaker 1: to be just this fighting among them basically for until
- 10:08Speaker 1: the time that Jesus comes back again, which we'll talk
- 10:10Speaker 1: about that in just a little bit here. But going
- 10:13Speaker 1: back to this verse, the first thing that husbands do
- 10:15Speaker 1: is they learn to live with their wives in an
- 10:18Speaker 1: understanding way. giving honor to the woman as to the
- 10:22Speaker 1: weaker vessel. So you're actually supposed to honor the woman
- 10:27Speaker 1: as you would something that is very precious to you.
- 10:31Speaker 1: For example, you know, my dog Bandit, he is very old.
- 10:35Speaker 1: I have had him since high school. I love that
- 10:37Speaker 1: dog so much. Like he is my most prized possession.
- 10:43Speaker 1: And yet because of his age, he can barely walk.
- 10:45Speaker 1: He has a limp, He is a very weak dog.
- 10:50Speaker 1: And yet I love that dog so much. I am
- 10:53Speaker 1: going to be literally devastated when that dog dies. He
- 10:57Speaker 1: is a weak little thing that I hold with a
- 11:00Speaker 1: lot of honor. So just because something is weak does
- 11:04Speaker 1: not mean it has lesser value. In fact, the opposite
- 11:07Speaker 1: is often true. Something that we have that's weak is
- 11:10Speaker 1: often given a lot more value because of its weak nature.
- 11:15Speaker 1: For example, um, on my piano right now, I have
- 11:18Speaker 1: a whole bunch of little Dutch ornaments. You know, they're
- 11:23Speaker 1: made of ceramic and they have that really pretty blue
- 11:25Speaker 1: paint on them. And I have this like tile that
- 11:28Speaker 1: I actually purchased in Amsterdam that is like an original
- 11:34Speaker 1: Delft tile. And I love this thing. It's a prized
- 11:37Speaker 1: possession that I have. And I display it proudly on
- 11:41Speaker 1: my piano and I dust it off every, I don't know,
- 11:44Speaker 1: two months or so. And I far less than I should. And,
- 11:48Speaker 1: you know, it sits there and I get joy from
- 11:51Speaker 1: it just looking at it. But when I purchased that tile,
- 11:55Speaker 1: I remember taking so much care to wrap it so
- 11:59Speaker 1: that it would not break on the trip back home
- 12:02Speaker 1: because I didn't have any like bubble wrap or packing
- 12:04Speaker 1: paper or anything like that. So I had to like
- 12:06Speaker 1: wrap a whole bunch of t-shirts around it to keep
- 12:09Speaker 1: it nice and safe. That is how the men should
- 12:12Speaker 1: be treating their wives. as something that is worthy of
- 12:16Speaker 1: honor because they are the weaker vessel. Not being upset
- 12:20Speaker 1: over the fact that their wives are weaker. And by
- 12:22Speaker 1: the way, for any of you women that are upset
- 12:25Speaker 1: with what I'm saying here, you shouldn't be because go
- 12:28Speaker 1: try arm wrestling your husband. Chances are you are not
- 12:32Speaker 1: going to win unless your husband is like very, very
- 12:34Speaker 1: sick or something. The vast majority of women are physically
- 12:38Speaker 1: weaker than men, just across the board. No matter what
- 12:40Speaker 1: anybody tells you, I'm sorry, you are physically weaker than men,
- 12:44Speaker 1: even if you don't want to be. But that is
- 12:47Speaker 1: how God created us to be. We are physically weaker,
- 12:50Speaker 1: and that's not something to dishonor or look at as
- 12:54Speaker 1: lesser than. It's actually something to honor, Peter says right here.
- 12:58Speaker 1: And unfortunately, men throughout the ages have not honored that
- 13:02Speaker 1: about women. They've looked down on women because they are
- 13:06Speaker 1: the weaker vessel. So Peter tells them, men, stop looking
- 13:12Speaker 1: down on your wives because they are not as physically
- 13:15Speaker 1: strong as you are. And by the way, Peter is
- 13:17Speaker 1: not saying that women have a physically weaker mind, that
- 13:21Speaker 1: they're physically weaker morally or spiritually or anything like that.
- 13:26Speaker 1: He's saying that they have a weaker vessel. Consistently throughout scripture,
- 13:31Speaker 1: the word vessel is used to describe our bodies. For example,
- 13:35Speaker 1: in 2 Timothy 2, 20 and 21, it says, Now
- 13:40Speaker 1: in a large house, there are not only vessels of
- 13:42Speaker 1: gold and of silver, but also of wood and clay.
- 13:45Speaker 1: Some are for honor and some for dishonor. If anyone
- 13:48Speaker 1: therefore purges himself from these, he will be a vessel
- 13:51Speaker 1: for honor, sanctified and suitable for the master's use, prepared
- 13:55Speaker 1: for every good work. And then in 2 Corinthians 4,
- 13:59Speaker 1: 6 and 7, it says, seeing it is God who says,
- 14:03Speaker 1: Light will shine out of the darkness... who is shown
- 14:06Speaker 1: in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge
- 14:08Speaker 1: of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ,
- 14:11Speaker 1: we have this treasure in clay vessels, in other words,
- 14:14Speaker 1: in our own bodies, that the exceeding greatness of the
- 14:17Speaker 1: power may be of God and not from ourselves. So
- 14:21Speaker 1: these bodies that we have, according to Peter and Paul,
- 14:24Speaker 1: are called vessels. So women have a weaker vessel, not
- 14:29Speaker 1: mind or intellect or anything like that. So the men
- 14:33Speaker 1: need to respect and honor the woman as the weaker vessel,
- 14:37Speaker 1: because here's what it says. Also being joint heirs of
- 14:40Speaker 1: the grace of life, that your prayers may not be hindered.
- 14:44Speaker 1: So this is one of the reasons why the men
- 14:46Speaker 1: need to be respectful of their wives. Because firstly, they
- 14:51Speaker 1: are joint heirs of the grace of life. And secondly,
- 14:55Speaker 1: because your prayers will not be hindered. This takes me
- 14:59Speaker 1: to Galatians chapter two, 26 through 29. It says for
- 15:04Speaker 1: you are all children of God through faith in Christ Jesus.
- 15:08Speaker 1: For as many of you as were baptized into Christ
- 15:10Speaker 1: have put on Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek.
- 15:13Speaker 1: There is neither slave nor free man. There is neither
- 15:16Speaker 1: male nor female for you are all one in Christ Jesus.
- 15:20Speaker 1: If you are Christ's, then you are Abraham's offspring and
- 15:23Speaker 1: heirs according to promise. So every single Christian, has the
- 15:28Speaker 1: exact same inheritance in the eyes of God. So if
- 15:33Speaker 1: a husband is married to a Christian wife, then that
- 15:36Speaker 1: means that they are co-heirs of the blessings that God
- 15:40Speaker 1: is going to give them. They own it together. So
- 15:43Speaker 1: the men are not above the women. And likewise, the
- 15:46Speaker 1: women are not above the men. Everybody is equal in
- 15:51Speaker 1: the eyes of God. So this brings us to an
- 15:54Speaker 1: interesting point, which is that This order is not going
- 15:58Speaker 1: to exist when Jesus comes again. The order of the
- 16:01Speaker 1: man being the head of the household. That is just
- 16:04Speaker 1: a temporary thing because of the sin nature. Let's go
- 16:08Speaker 1: over to Genesis 3 and read verses 11 through 16.
- 16:10Speaker 1: This is right after the woman took of the fruit
- 16:15Speaker 1: and then the man took of the fruit. So they
- 16:16Speaker 1: disobeyed God and then they hid from God because they
- 16:20Speaker 1: were naked. So here's what it says, starting in verse 11.
- 16:23Speaker 1: God said,' Who told you that you were naked?' Have
- 16:26Speaker 1: you eaten from the tree that I commanded you not
- 16:28Speaker 1: to eat from? The man said, The woman whom you
- 16:31Speaker 1: gave to be with me, she gave me the fruit
- 16:33Speaker 1: from the tree and I ate it. Yahweh God said
- 16:36Speaker 1: to the woman, What have you done? The woman said,
- 16:39Speaker 1: The serpent deceived me and I ate. Yahweh God said
- 16:42Speaker 1: to the serpent, Because you have done this, you are
- 16:44Speaker 1: cursed above all livestock and above every animal of the field.
- 16:47Speaker 1: You shall go on your belly and you shall eat
- 16:49Speaker 1: dust all the days of your life. I will put
- 16:51Speaker 1: hostility between you and the woman and and between your
- 16:54Speaker 1: offspring and her offspring, and he will bruise your head
- 16:57Speaker 1: and you will bruise his heel. To the woman he said,
- 17:00Speaker 1: I will greatly multiply your pain in childbirth. You will
- 17:03Speaker 1: bear children in pain. Your desire will be for your husband,
- 17:06Speaker 1: and he will rule over you. To Adam he said,
- 17:10Speaker 1: Because you have listened to your wife's voice and have
- 17:12Speaker 1: eaten from the tree which I commanded you, saying you
- 17:14Speaker 1: shall not eat of it, the ground is cursed for
- 17:16Speaker 1: your sake. You will eat from it with much labor
- 17:19Speaker 1: all the days of your life. It will yield thorns
- 17:22Speaker 1: and thistles to you, and you will eat the herb
- 17:24Speaker 1: of the field. You will eat bread by the sweat
- 17:26Speaker 1: of your face until you return to the ground. For
- 17:28Speaker 1: you are taken out of it, for you are dust,
- 17:31Speaker 1: and you shall return to dust. So that is the
- 17:34Speaker 1: curse of the sin nature. And you can tell that
- 17:37Speaker 1: this curse was already in play before God even told
- 17:40Speaker 1: it to the man and the woman, because like it says,
- 17:42Speaker 1: the man immediately blamed his wife for the sin that
- 17:46Speaker 1: he committed. So already there was hostility in the marriage relationship,
- 17:51Speaker 1: but it was not like that before the curse. That
- 17:55Speaker 1: was a result of sin. And thankfully now when Jesus
- 17:59Speaker 1: comes back again, that curse is going to be lifted
- 18:02Speaker 1: completely and there will be complete unity among the sexes.
- 18:07Speaker 1: So that is the first reason why a husband must
- 18:10Speaker 1: treat his wife with honor and in an understanding way.
- 18:14Speaker 1: because he understands that his position in the marriage relationship
- 18:18Speaker 1: is only temporary. It's only for the here and now.
- 18:22Speaker 1: And his wife has innate value. And this is something
- 18:24Speaker 1: that the men in Peter's day just wouldn't have understood, right?
- 18:28Speaker 1: Because they were the patriarchs of their family. In fact,
- 18:32Speaker 1: I mentioned on Thursday that that even the way Peter
- 18:35Speaker 1: ordered this letter by addressing the women first, that was
- 18:39Speaker 1: super counter-cultural because nobody ever addressed the women. They only
- 18:44Speaker 1: would address the men, knowing that the men were the
- 18:47Speaker 1: heads of the households. And that is true. The men are,
- 18:50Speaker 1: according to scripture and according to all of history, the
- 18:54Speaker 1: heads of the household, again, because of the sin nature.
- 18:58Speaker 1: So Peter here is trying to form a stronger bond
- 19:03Speaker 1: in a marriage relationship that is broken because of sin.
- 19:07Speaker 1: And every single one of our marriage relationships is in
- 19:10Speaker 1: fact broken in some way, because again, we are all
- 19:14Speaker 1: fallen individuals. Sometimes I treat my husband like crap. Sometimes
- 19:19Speaker 1: my husband comes home grouchy and he doesn't treat me
- 19:21Speaker 1: with respect. These are things that are going to happen
- 19:25Speaker 1: in a marriage relationship, regardless of who you marry. But
- 19:28Speaker 1: someday it will not be like that. And that is
- 19:31Speaker 1: something we can look forward to, that we will be
- 19:34Speaker 1: in complete unity with Jesus and also with the men
- 19:38Speaker 1: and women in our lives. And lastly, Peter says right
- 19:42Speaker 1: here to treat your wife with honor so that your
- 19:44Speaker 1: own prayers may not be hindered. So actually the men
- 19:48Speaker 1: can potentially damage their relationship. with God if they do
- 19:52Speaker 1: not treat their wives with any kind of respect or honor.
- 19:56Speaker 1: Because again, God does not play favorites. He does not
- 19:59Speaker 1: look at the wife in her vulnerable position, in her
- 20:03Speaker 1: weaker vessel, as something that should be mistreated. He looks
- 20:08Speaker 1: at her as his own creation, as a child of God.
- 20:13Speaker 1: So of course, if a husband is mistreating his wife,
- 20:17Speaker 1: then that's going to affect his own prayer life and
- 20:20Speaker 1: his own relationship with God. The same way that any
- 20:23Speaker 1: of us treating another person with contempt or unforgiveness or
- 20:28Speaker 1: unkindness would damage our relationships with God. But the men
- 20:32Speaker 1: of Peter's time didn't really understand that. They thought that
- 20:36Speaker 1: they truly had complete authority to do whatever they wanted
- 20:41Speaker 1: to do. They could divorce their wives at a whim.
- 20:44Speaker 1: They could marry another. They could look down at their
- 20:46Speaker 1: wives because their wives are not as strong as they are.
- 20:49Speaker 1: They could really treat their wives however they wanted in
- 20:53Speaker 1: their own minds. So Peter is telling them something that
- 20:56Speaker 1: many of them may have not considered before, that how
- 20:59Speaker 1: they treat their wife may impact their own relationship with
- 21:04Speaker 1: God in some way. I'm not saying that men who
- 21:07Speaker 1: mistreat their wives are automatically going to hell. I'm not
- 21:09Speaker 1: saying that at all. But it does damage part of
- 21:12Speaker 1: the relationship, specifically the part that includes prayer. So husbands,
- 21:17Speaker 1: if you want a good relationship with God, maybe there's
- 21:20Speaker 1: something that you've been praying for that God just does
- 21:23Speaker 1: not seem to be answering. Maybe there's something that you
- 21:25Speaker 1: want in life that you just don't seem to be getting,
- 21:28Speaker 1: no matter how many prayers you're praying to God. That
- 21:32Speaker 1: might be a sign for you to... analyze your own
- 21:36Speaker 1: marriage relationship. How am I treating my wife? Am I
- 21:40Speaker 1: treating her the way that Jesus would treat a woman?
- 21:43Speaker 1: Or am I treating her with disrespect? Depending on how
- 21:46Speaker 1: your prayer life is with God, it might be a
- 21:49Speaker 1: really good gauge for seeing how your relationship is with
- 21:53Speaker 1: your own wives. Well, faithful listeners, I hope that you
- 21:57Speaker 1: guys enjoyed today's episode. And I hope that you were
- 22:01Speaker 1: convicted by it or learned something from it both the
- 22:04Speaker 1: men and the women. You know, the one thing that
- 22:06Speaker 1: I don't want either men or women to do is
- 22:09Speaker 1: to take the episodes that I do about marriage and
- 22:12Speaker 1: be like, ha, see, told you, and like share it
- 22:15Speaker 1: to your husband and be like, look, you're not being
- 22:17Speaker 1: kind enough. So yeah, ladies, don't do that. And if
- 22:22Speaker 1: you feel the urge to do that, go back to
- 22:24Speaker 1: Thursday's episode and listen to it again. I know it
- 22:27Speaker 1: could be tempting. All right, faithful listeners, before I close
- 22:30Speaker 1: out today's episode, please listen to one last sponsored advertisement.
- 22:36Speaker 1: I told you guys there is a lot to that verse.
- 22:38Speaker 1: In fact, I think there's just as much to that
- 22:40Speaker 1: verse as there was to the six verses where Peter
- 22:44Speaker 1: was discussing the women on Thursday. So he has a
- 22:47Speaker 1: lot to say about the marriage relationship and how we
- 22:49Speaker 1: can make it better under Christ by submitting to Christ
- 22:54Speaker 1: and showing respect to the spouse that God gave us.
- 22:58Speaker 1: So faithful listeners, I hope that all of you enjoyed
- 23:00Speaker 1: today's episode. And if you did, share it on your
- 23:02Speaker 1: social media platforms and tell people that the Bible Explained
- 23:05Speaker 1: podcast exists. Hopefully I'll see all of you tomorrow for
- 23:09Speaker 1: another episode from Esther. We are flying through Esther. We're
- 23:12Speaker 1: going to be done, I think, next week with the
- 23:15Speaker 1: book of Esther. So yeah, then we'll be moving into
- 23:18Speaker 1: the book of Job, which I am very excited about.
- 23:21Speaker 1: That's going to be a fun, fun book and a
- 23:24Speaker 1: depressing book, but we're going to talk about what Job
- 23:27Speaker 1: is really about. So that'll be coming up in about
- 23:30Speaker 1: two weeks on the Bible Explained podcast. So faithful listeners,
- 23:34Speaker 1: have a fantastic and wonderful rest of your day. Happy
- 23:37Speaker 1: listening and God bless. I just want to take a
