- 0:03This is Living Waters of Grace, the teaching ministry of Clark
- 0:08Wofford, senior pastor of Calvary Chapel of Westmoreland,
- 0:12County of Greensburg, PA. Now here's Pastor Clark as he
- 0:16continues teaching through God's Word.
- 0:37The Lord says there's neither Jew nor Greek, nor bond or
- 0:41freeman or male or female. We've all been made to drink
- 0:45that same spiritual drink from God's economy and the way he
- 0:50views things. He doesn't look at ethnic
- 0:53issues, he doesn't look at racial issues, he doesn't look
- 0:56at financial issues, he doesn't choose people based upon some
- 1:01place of birth. He doesn't see anybody as being
- 1:04more important than someone else, right.
- 1:06We're all the same as people. In today's world, there are so
- 1:10many things that divide us from one another.
- 1:13Race, gender, political ideology, or even favorite
- 1:16sports teams can drive wedges between people if we allow them
- 1:20to. But Pastor Clark teaches us
- 1:23today that in the eyes of God, all of us are equal.
- 1:26All of us have sinned and are in need of a Savior.
- 1:30Jesus didn't come to this earth to die for one group of people.
- 1:34He came to offer salvation to any who would call on him.
- 1:38The early church was diverse because it was open to everyone.
- 1:42Now here's Pastor Clark in the book of Acts Chapter 5 with
- 1:45today's edition of Living Waters of Grace.
- 1:49So we are in the book of Acts, the Acts of the Apostles could
- 1:54be called the Acts of the Holy Spirit as well, because it is
- 1:58about the work of God's Holy Spirit in the church, the early
- 2:02church. So the early church, when we
- 2:06study this in Acts, this is all new.
- 2:09Everything that we're studying is new to the people who became
- 2:13believers at Pentecost and when God put his church together, the
- 2:18New Testament church, there was no programs, very little
- 2:23politics, no agenda. It was just people loving Jesus
- 2:28and hanging out together and worshipping God.
- 2:32They didn't really have buildings like we have nowadays,
- 2:34church buildings at that time. They didn't have much of an
- 2:38organizational chart in regard to how ministry flows within the
- 2:43four walls of a a church community.
- 2:47So everything is organic, everything is developing,
- 2:50everything is brand new. I'm going to finish reading the
- 2:53verses in chapter 5 starting at 40 leading into chapter 6.
- 2:58This is after Gamaliel told the leaders of the empire at the
- 3:02time not to hassle the Christians.
- 3:04If it's of if it's of man, it'll fall apart.
- 3:06If it's of God, no one can stop it.
- 3:09And obviously it is of God because no one has stopped it in
- 3:12over 2000 years. But it says, And they agreed
- 3:15with him. And when they had called for the
- 3:16apostles and beaten them, they commanded that they should not
- 3:20speak in the name of Jesus and let them go.
- 3:22So they departed from the presence of the council,
- 3:25rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer shame for his
- 3:29name. And daily in the temple and in
- 3:31every house, they did not cease teaching and preaching Jesus as
- 3:36the Christ. So they weren't worried about
- 3:39being embarrassed or ridiculed or persecuted or betrayed.
- 3:45And in regard to the nation, they love serving the Lord.
- 3:49And they weren't self-centered, they were other centered.
- 3:52They were Christ centered and they were praising God that they
- 3:55had an opportunity to suffer difficulty for their faith,
- 3:59something that we can learn from.
- 4:01And they worshipped every day. It wasn't just like they waited
- 4:05till Wednesday or Sunday or some other day.
- 4:07These people had such a desire to be in the Word and be
- 4:10together as Christians that they they gathered whenever they
- 4:14could in homes and they were always teaching one another
- 4:17about the things of God and preaching the gospel to people
- 4:20that never heard or needed to know who Jesus was.
- 4:23This a wonderful move of of God's spirit.
- 4:27It was approximately 20,000 people that were part of this
- 4:30New Testament church at this time.
- 4:32It was developing, it was growing and eventually there'd
- 4:34be persecution and the church would be scattered and they
- 4:38would be then meeting primarily in smaller homes, groups, that
- 4:41kind of stuff. God wasn't interested in mega
- 4:44churches back then. He was interested in real unity
- 4:48and Christians coming together, knowing each other, loving each
- 4:52other, praying for one another wasn't the size of the of the of
- 4:56the organization. It was the life that was in the
- 4:59community of faith at the time that impacted everyone that was
- 5:02exposed to this New Testament church.
- 5:06So we we we begin in chapter 6 here and the subtitle says 7
- 5:10chosen to serve in any church and it happened in the early
- 5:16church. There's always need for help and
- 5:20they always say there's an 8020 roll, 20% to 80% of the work and
- 5:24organizations or ministries or whatever.
- 5:27We're fortunate here. There's a much higher percentage
- 5:30of participation of help and service because of your heart's
- 5:34desired and want to serve the Lord.
- 5:35And we're very grateful for that.
- 5:37That's what makes the church alive.
- 5:39When people get involved with their passion and their
- 5:41ministries and they're using their gifts.
- 5:44And now in these days and those days when the number of the
- 5:46disciples. This is Acts chapter 6, verse 1
- 5:49was multiplying. There arose A complaint against
- 5:53the Hebrews by the Hellenist because their widows were
- 5:56neglected in the daily distribution.
- 5:59So the Jewish institution, the synagogue, the temple, they did
- 6:06try to help take care of widows and orphans.
- 6:09This is not something new. But now there's this breakdown
- 6:13in relationship between Christians and the legalists of
- 6:17the Jewish religion. And so the ministry is growing,
- 6:22things are happening, and there's this complaint that's
- 6:25beginning to occur because they need more help now.
- 6:30These Hebrews were the people that were more, I guess,
- 6:36organized within the community of Jerusalem and they were law
- 6:40keepers and they were into, you know, their traditions and that
- 6:43kind of stuff. The hell on us were Jewish
- 6:46people, but they were impacted by Greek culture.
- 6:49And so they were sort of looked out upon by the Hebrews.
- 6:52But nonetheless, they were two communities of Jewish people.
- 6:56These people had been scattered during the dysphoria and the
- 6:59difficulties of of the nation of Israel, what they've been
- 7:02through since the beginning of time as a nation.
- 7:05So there's this this issue that things are falling through to
- 7:08cracks and the 12 summoned the multitude of the disciples and
- 7:13said it is not desirable that we should leave the word of God and
- 7:17serve tables. So what's the solution to the
- 7:22problem? And any given church is always
- 7:24something that someone maybe is upset about or they don't like
- 7:27something or they're frustrated or whatever.
- 7:30Instead of coming and making it known to the leadership, Lots of
- 7:33times people begin this behind the scenes, backbiting,
- 7:37murmuring, complaining, backstabbing, whatever.
- 7:39They did this or do you know what he did or what she did or
- 7:42whatever. And that stuff never solves
- 7:44anything, right? But lots of times things can be
- 7:47taken care of quite easily if someone just goes and says, hey,
- 7:50have you ever thought about this?
- 7:51This isn't really working really well right now.
- 7:54And have you ever thought about trying this or this idea,
- 7:56whatever. And we as leaders are open to
- 8:00whatever ideas you guys have. Many times, if they're good
- 8:03ideas and they're from the Lord, we want to see them implemented.
- 8:06If we're missing something or we're not doing something right,
- 8:08we want to be told about that so we can correct it.
- 8:11Not the people get mad and they leave or they say they don't
- 8:14listen or whatever. That's not the way we want to
- 8:17roll here. But what was happening here is
- 8:20that they realize the apostles, I can't do all this.
- 8:23There's twelve of them and they cannot handle all this group of
- 8:2820,000 approximately people and do it well.
- 8:32And so they said, look, we have to study and we have to pray so
- 8:38that whenever we come and teach the people, we have something of
- 8:41substance to tell them. But if we're too busy handling
- 8:45all the details of the church, then we're not going to be
- 8:48prepared to tell the people the things of God from the word of
- 8:51God. They were stretched and they
- 8:54realized that they couldn't do this themselves.
- 8:56They were asking for help. So they said it isn't a good
- 8:59idea that we should leave what we're supposed to be doing,
- 9:01teaching the word of God. And and when they say serving
- 9:04tables, it doesn't mean like giving people food, wiping them
- 9:08off, get the dishes, all that. It's just being a servant in all
- 9:11these different other capacities of what happens when churches
- 9:15begin to grow and there's needs. So it says.
- 9:18Therefore, brethren in verse 3, seek out from among you 7 men of
- 9:23good reputation, full of the Holy Spirit and wisdom whom we
- 9:27may appoint over this business, but we will give ourselves
- 9:30continually to prayer in the ministry of the word.
- 9:33So what's beautiful about this? It got the congregation involved
- 9:36like you guys. You should know the people that
- 9:39come to Calvary you, you, you talk to them all the time.
- 9:41If we have need for help, you might suggest to Pastor Lewis or
- 9:46one of the elders, Hey, you know this, this guy or this woman
- 9:49they're they're really gifted. They got a real love for God.
- 9:51Have you ever thought about, you know, we need have a need for
- 9:54this? And they were telling me they'd
- 9:55like to do whatever. I mean, that's how you get the
- 9:57right people in the right place. So, you know, they, they made
- 10:00suggestions in regard to what was happening.
- 10:04So the saying, please, the whole multitude.
- 10:08So the church was in unity. They weren't disunity.
- 10:11They were connected and they they understood we're going to
- 10:13fix this. We're going to make it right.
- 10:16And so they chose Stephen, a man full of faith, and the Holy
- 10:19Spirit, and Philip and Procurius and Nicanor and Theemon and par
- 10:25Menas, and Nicholas, a proselyte from Antioch, whom they set
- 10:29before the apostles. And when they had prayed, they
- 10:32laid hands on them. So what's interesting is the
- 10:35predominant number of people in this church at the time were
- 10:39Hebrew Christians. The Hellenists were a smaller
- 10:44percentage of the group, but a lot of people in this instance
- 10:47that were called to serve were from that Hellenist group, which
- 10:50is I find sort of interesting, you know, the Greek influence.
- 10:54And so the Lord says there's neither Jew nor Greek or Bond or
- 11:00Freeman or male or female. We've all been made to drink
- 11:04that same spiritual drink from God's economy and the way he
- 11:09views things. He doesn't look at ethnic
- 11:11issues, He doesn't look at racial issues.
- 11:14He doesn't look at financial issues.
- 11:17He doesn't choose people based upon some place of birth.
- 11:21He doesn't see anybody as being more important than someone
- 11:24else, right? We're all the same as people.
- 11:28And so whenever you have a, a church community, you don't have
- 11:32preference over one person or group or background.
- 11:37We need to be LED of the Holy Spirit.
- 11:39We need to do what God's telling us to do, not what the culture
- 11:43maybe is trying to push us to do or what's politically correct,
- 11:46you know, that term and that kind of stuff.
- 11:48We want God to raise up who he wants to raise up and for him to
- 11:52take down who he needs to take down.
- 11:55And so they, they got the support of the people.
- 11:59It wasn't a congregational role kind of thing or anything.
- 12:01It was the body of Christ being alive enough to, you know, be
- 12:06together in regard to people that they thought would be
- 12:09really good in this capacity. And so there was no
- 12:12disagreement. And so whenever they got these
- 12:15guys together, these seven, they ordained them.
- 12:18And ordained ordination is, is biblical.
- 12:21It's the laying on of hands to the person that's going to do a
- 12:26particular ministry in the church, and that person is
- 12:30codified or recognized by God's calling.
- 12:34And the laying on of hands isn't anything powerful from the
- 12:37person who's doing the laying on of hands.
- 12:40It's a picture of God laying his hands on them and we're just
- 12:44agreeing with what it is that God's already done in a person's
- 12:47life. And so when they did that, this
- 12:50is the exciting thing. Verse 7, they got it together.
- 12:53They got it straightened out. Then the word of God spread and
- 12:56the number of the disciples multiplied greatly in Jerusalem.
- 12:59And a great many of the priests were obedient to the faith.
- 13:02So what was cool about this is the apostles were released from
- 13:06the responsibility of having to deal with the the widow
- 13:09situation. They were able to concentrate on
- 13:12what it was that they were called to do and then they were
- 13:15able to do it effectively. And the word went out and the
- 13:18church kept growing. It kept growing.
- 13:20It says it multiplied greatly in Jerusalem.
- 13:22And not only the people in the streets we're hearing, but the
- 13:26high-ranking officials that were serving in the synagogue.
- 13:29The priests were getting saved too, which is awesome, right?
- 13:32Just a move of God, a real revival.
- 13:35And so Stephen, we're going to concentrate on him now.
- 13:38The next Stephen was one of the seven.
- 13:41He was not an apostle, but he was a man of God filled with the
- 13:45Holy Spirit. So God doesn't differentiate in
- 13:49regard to the communication of the Word.
- 13:52A man of God is a man of God. You know, the title doesn't not
- 13:55make the man the man of God. It's not the pastor or the elder
- 13:58or the Deacon. It's you and me as men were
- 14:00either given over to serve God and to be used by God and to use
- 14:04our gifts that God's given us, or we just sit around and don't
- 14:08do anything right in our church. You know, we want to see more
- 14:11and more men teaching the word of God because if they're
- 14:14learning to teach the word of God, they're going to help the
- 14:17church grow, but they're also going to be used by the Lord in
- 14:20their own homes and their family and their own sphere of
- 14:23influence as as well as the church.
- 14:26And that Wednesday night we have other guys beside pastors that
- 14:29are teaching the word and they're this is competent and
- 14:32gifted and a blessing to us is, is, is the pastors.
- 14:36We don't hold one person up higher than the other.
- 14:38It's the word of God that's doing the work, right.
- 14:41The word of God communicated to the people of God is what
- 14:44changes the the hearts of of the people of God.
- 14:47So Stephen is a man of faith. It says here in verse 8, Stephen
- 14:52full of faith and power, did great wonders and signs among
- 14:56the people. And then you might say, well, I
- 14:57thought any of the apostles could do that.
- 14:59Well, back in the early church days, God's miraculous power was
- 15:03being poured out through men and women in very different kind of
- 15:07circumstances. It wasn't, excuse me, only an
- 15:10Apostolic kind of authority that would have the ability to do
- 15:13these things. I mean, Stevens picked to be and
- 15:16there was no deacons at this time.
- 15:18Later on, the word develop Deacon means servant.
- 15:21In the book of Timothy, it tells about the qualifications of
- 15:24leaders in the church, but they weren't so much at this
- 15:28particular point in time positioned as deacons.
- 15:31They were just servants, right. So Steven, he's doing these
- 15:35ministries and he's called to help with the widows, but he, he
- 15:39didn't say, well, well, I guess I'm just like a down and out guy
- 15:42and I'm, I'm not good enough to do anything else.
- 15:44So I'll help these widows and I'll, you know, no, he was a man
- 15:48of God. So he had a lot of spiritual
- 15:50gifts. He was able to do a lot of
- 15:51different things. He wasn't just doing one thing
- 15:54right. He was able to be used by the
- 15:56Lord. And then in verse 9, there arose
- 15:58some from what is called the synagogue of the freeman
- 16:02Sirenians, Alexandrians and those from Silesia and Asia
- 16:07disputing with Stephen. They began to argue with him
- 16:10because of his evangelistic zeal and his preaching of of Christ.
- 16:14Cilicia is the region where the apostle Paul was serving with
- 16:19the Sanhedrin at the time. He was called Saul of Tarsus and
- 16:22we'll study later on in the book of the Acts how he became born
- 16:26again. But he was a persecutor of
- 16:28Christians. And so it says that and when
- 16:32they were not able to resist the wisdom and the spirit by which
- 16:36he spoke. So these guys are hearing what
- 16:39the gospel's about the person of Jesus, the history, the biblical
- 16:44point by point step and he goes into great detail.
- 16:48It's probably one of the greatest historical sermons in
- 16:50the New Testament as to what God started with Abraham and moved
- 16:54all the way through Christ when Christ came.
- 16:56We'll take our time as we study this.
- 16:58But, and so they're arguing with him.
- 17:01But what was amazing was they inside weren't able to resist
- 17:05the wisdom and the spirit by which he spoke.
- 17:07There was an anointing on this man and they weren't able to
- 17:11ignore it. They weren't able to dispute it.
- 17:14They weren't really able to find concrete evidence to disagree
- 17:18with what he was saying. They didn't like what he was
- 17:21saying, but they weren't able to disagree with what he was
- 17:25saying. They were convicted even at the
- 17:27early stage of his his preaching here.
- 17:30And it says then they secretly induce men to say we have heard
- 17:34him speak blasphemous words against Moses and God.
- 17:39So already these guys are beginning to spread division and
- 17:42lies among the multitudes of people.
- 17:45They're putting him down. They're disagreeing, they're
- 17:49lying about things he said. Isn't that typical of anybody
- 17:53that is influential in the culture?
- 17:57If they're good people and they're trying to do the right
- 18:00job, how many people slander the leader or the spokesperson or
- 18:06the person? You know, it could be a
- 18:08politician, it could be, you know, whatever, a pastor, you
- 18:11guys or your family, you know, you're sharing your faith with
- 18:14someone and, and they're, they're saying, well, you know,
- 18:17I wouldn't listen to him because I saw him run a red light last
- 18:20week. You know, he's not a real
- 18:21Christian or just goofy stuff, right?
- 18:23They come up with all kind of reasons to invalidate you as
- 18:27being a follower and a servant of God, right?
- 18:30So they're beginning to stir all this up.
- 18:33You know, we've heard him speak blasphemous words against Moses
- 18:36and God. He never did that, but he surely
- 18:39told them that Jesus was better than Moses, which he is, right?
- 18:44They also talked about the authority of Christ versus all
- 18:49those who went before him. He was very clear on
- 18:52representing the Lord as as to who he was and what he did.
- 18:56And it says in verse 12. And they stirred up the people,
- 18:59they got them all uptight, got them all anxious, aggravated the
- 19:04elders and the scribes, and they came upon him, seized him and
- 19:09brought him to the council. So none of the stuff's true.
- 19:12What they're saying about this evangelist Stephen, he's being
- 19:18faithful to this. Give the word out there, simply
- 19:20the history of what Christ has done and they get this group of
- 19:24people that want to arrest them now, seize them and bring them
- 19:28before the authorities, the same authorities that Christ had to
- 19:31go through and go before, which is interesting.
- 19:35They also set up false witnesses who said this man does not cease
- 19:40to speak blasphemous words against this holy place in the
- 19:44law. False witnesses, That's common
- 19:51in the day as well. How many times have you heard
- 19:56things that are being said about someone that aren't?
- 19:58That isn't true. This is happening in the
- 20:01political arena right now. Thank the Lord there's evidence
- 20:04to the contrary and it's brought out to clarify that it is a lie
- 20:08and it's not true. But if the enemy always wants to
- 20:12bring lies and slanderous things.
- 20:16Against the truth. It's just the way it is in in
- 20:20our world, and it's the way it's been since the beginning of
- 20:23time. So they set up these false
- 20:26witnesses. Now, when Stephen was speaking
- 20:30about what God had put on his heart, he wasn't like saying
- 20:35that the temple was insignificant, but he was trying
- 20:41to help them understand. You've made this into an
- 20:43idolatrous institution. You begun to worship the
- 20:48structure and the artwork and the beauty of the temple and not
- 20:51the one who created it. And that can happen very easily
- 20:55in, in, in churches. People told you, if you've been
- 20:58into that church, it's magnificent.
- 20:59They have the most amazing stained glass and they have, you
- 21:03know, how high ceilings in the, in the chandeliers and, and
- 21:08people can go on and on and on and they like, they go into that
- 21:11and then they think, well, you know, because all that stuff's
- 21:13there, then there must be God must be there somehow.
- 21:17And then they, they, they come into a place like this.
- 21:19And where's the stained glass man?
- 21:21You know, is this really a church or is this a cult or what
- 21:24is this place? You know, and I'm not negating
- 21:28the beauty. I like a, a beautiful church.
- 21:30I go into Saint Vincent once in a while and pray when I'm
- 21:33driving down the road. I just like going in there
- 21:35because it's sun's coming in through that stained glass
- 21:37window. It's cool.
- 21:38I like that. If we could afford it, I'd like
- 21:40to do it right, but we're never, we're probably never going to be
- 21:42able to do that. So if you want that, you got to
- 21:44go up there, right? Nonetheless, it's not an opinion
- 21:48of this is better and this is worse.
- 21:50You know, the whole idea was it was their heart.
- 21:53And because of their hearts being so focused on religion and
- 21:56the duty of the law, they were religious Pharisees, and they
- 22:01were trying to make everybody in a legalistic way, follow their
- 22:06pattern of religion. And so Stevens telling them
- 22:10about the freedom that we have in Christ and that God is not
- 22:15dwelling in temples made with hands, Jesus made that clear.
- 22:20It's nice, you know, when we're together as a church, I sense
- 22:22God's presence here, not because of the building, but because
- 22:25you're here. You represent him.
- 22:28Your life is filled with God's Spirit and, and that's what
- 22:32makes the place alive When whenever you guys all leave here
- 22:35and you walk in here, it's just a room.
- 22:37It's just a room, but you still can sense of spirit because he's
- 22:42with you if you're the only one in the room.
- 22:45For we have heard him say that this Jesus of Nazareth will
- 22:50destroy this place and change the customs which Moses
- 22:53delivered to us. So they're really making a big
- 22:58deal about the building. And whenever Jesus said this
- 23:04temple will be destroyed or be raised up in three days, we all
- 23:07know because we went through the Gospel studying, that he was
- 23:09referring to his body, right, and his resurrection.
- 23:13But of course, the temple was going to be destroyed in AD 70.
- 23:17And he warned them about what was going to happen to their
- 23:20wonderful city and because of their Pagan rituals and
- 23:23everything else that was going on, that the Lord was going to
- 23:26allow that all to be eventually destroyed.
- 23:30And the customs, you know, the traditions of men make God's
- 23:36word of no effect. If I or Lewis or any of us as
- 23:41leading the church began to make a custom primary versus the
- 23:49worship of Jesus, we've lost it. We've already gone down the
- 23:54wrong Rd. Thank you for listening to this
- 23:58edition of Living Waters of Grace.
- 24:01Pastor Clark is teaching us about the book of Acts in this
- 24:04series. Acts is a powerful and unique
- 24:07part of Scripture, not just because it records the spread of
- 24:10the gospel geographically from Jerusalem to the ends of the
- 24:13earth, but also culturally. Acts shows us how the message of
- 24:18Jesus moved beyond its Jewish roots and began to reach the
- 24:21Gentile world. What started with Peter leading
- 24:24a small group in the Upper Room became a global movement with
- 24:28Paul taking the gospel to cities, synagogues and
- 24:32marketplaces across the Roman Empire.
- 24:35Acts captures this vital transition and reminds us that
- 24:39the good news of Jesus is for all people in every place.
- 24:43May we be inspired to carry that same gospel boldly into our
- 24:48world today. Living Waters of Grace comes to
- 24:51you from Calvary Chapel, Westmoreland.
