- 0:22Hey team, welcome to another episode of the Impact Ready
- 0:25podcast. Thank you for listening.
- 0:27I hope you're having an awesome week.
- 0:30In this episode, we're going to touch on again how language, the
- 0:35language that we use, can be powerful in impacting our
- 0:39behaviors, our actions, our life.
- 0:41Language can shape our lives. And in past episodes we talked
- 0:46about it in the terms of the language of your life.
- 0:51That's what I call it, the language of your life.
- 0:53This is the idea that the way that we talk about things,
- 0:57whether it's our relationships, our work, our opportunities, the
- 1:01holidays, our marriage, our kids, just even our daily
- 1:05circumstances and all that stuff, it all has an impact on
- 1:10us far beyond just a minute of talking about it.
- 1:13Because the language that we use is a reflection of the energy
- 1:17that we feel inside about those specific things, and it shapes
- 1:21the story that we tell. When we are constantly speaking
- 1:27the same kind of story out loud over and over again, whether
- 1:30it's positive or negative, it sends a message to our cells.
- 1:36And not only does it influence us energetically, like our mood
- 1:39or the way that we feel our emotions, our feelings, it also
- 1:44influences our Physiology. And I'm not going to get too in
- 1:47the weeds with this, but this is because the thoughts we have
- 1:50influence the neurochemicals that our brain releases that
- 1:54have a downstream effect on cellular activity.
- 1:58So without going into too much detail, it comes down to the
- 2:01point that our thoughts, our language, our feelings can
- 2:06influence what proteins our cells are making.
- 2:09Language can impact biology. If we stay out of the weeds and
- 2:14we focus solely on how language relates to energy or story, it
- 2:21can just be really helpful to shed some light on things that
- 2:25maybe we aren't very aware of. Our blind spots, our negative
- 2:29stories that are still kind of unconscious are limiting
- 2:32beliefs. Last year in one of the
- 2:35episodes, I talked about how I stopped saying the word busy.
- 2:38And the reason I stopped is because it was a very specific
- 2:41energy that I was communicating when I said that word.
- 2:44I I noticed that when I said the word busy, it often felt like it
- 2:49was putting a wall up in a conversation.
- 2:52I didn't like the way that the word felt.
- 2:55I didn't like the way that people responded when I used it.
- 2:58I didn't like the story it was telling about my life as if all
- 3:02of these circumstances were out of my control, when in reality,
- 3:05I knew that I was the one who was allowing for the
- 3:08circumstances of my life. I was the one scheduling things
- 3:11on my calendar or not taking ownership of my time.
- 3:15And it all kind of started with the fact that I didn't really
- 3:17like when people told me how busy they were because I felt
- 3:21like it put up an energetic wall between me and this other person
- 3:24when we were talking. So I cut that word out and
- 3:30oftentimes I'll look at other things in my language and just
- 3:33examine it and see what is that telling about my energy?
- 3:36What is that sharing about my story?
- 3:38How is that influencing my actions or maybe my own
- 3:41subconscious beliefs that I'm not really even fully aware of?
- 3:46And there's another powerful word that people say all the
- 3:49time that I don't think they're aware of its power.
- 3:54And that word is. But think about sentences that
- 3:59you might have said recently, something like, I'd really like
- 4:03to make more time to exercise, but I'd have a lot to do on this
- 4:08project. But yeah, I'd really like to
- 4:11hang out with the kids more, but I would have been able to go do
- 4:15that thing. But yeah, I would have gotten to
- 4:19that. But yes, I could probably spend
- 4:22more time with my spouse. But in this case, the word but
- 4:29is a good word to hone in on because it can reveal some ways
- 4:35in which we are perhaps disempowering ourselves rather
- 4:38than empowering ourselves. Or it can reveal a whole bunch
- 4:43of other things. For example, sometimes the word
- 4:47but reveals some fear. Like if I were to say I wish I
- 4:51could have had this conversation with her, but I just don't think
- 4:54she's in a good place to hear me, that might inform me that
- 4:59I'm afraid of being rejected by this person.
- 5:02Or maybe I have some apprehension and having a
- 5:05conflict with them. Or it can be a place where we're
- 5:10not taking radical ownership. I'd really like to have this
- 5:13conversation with her, but I don't think they're in a good
- 5:15place to hear me. Well, maybe that's true, but it
- 5:18also might be a presumption. And it might be a place where
- 5:22I'm shirking the responsibility and not taking ownership of my
- 5:26own feelings and my communication.
- 5:30Perhaps it's worth looking at, right?
- 5:33These sentences could also easily be a place where a
- 5:36saboteur is creeping in. I wish I could have this
- 5:39conversation with her, but I just don't think she's in a
- 5:41place to hear me. OK, Again, you could be making a
- 5:46logical assessment. Or maybe that people pleaser
- 5:50saboteur is sneaking in here and you don't really want to make
- 5:52waves. Maybe it's the martyr who's
- 5:56saying I have to do everything around here.
- 5:58Maybe it's the perfectionist who feels like everything has to be
- 6:02the perfect conditions to be able to have a conversation.
- 6:05It could be any one of those old negative stories and limiting
- 6:08beliefs. We often have saboteurs creeping
- 6:12in and dictating our language because they are a negative
- 6:16story and so it makes sense that language is US telling a story
- 6:21and therefore it influences our behavior without us even being
- 6:25aware of it. When I started to pay attention
- 6:30to when and how I use the word. But it was really interesting.
- 6:34It was an interesting exercise for me to go through in my own
- 6:38life and sort of go through my own little diagnosis.
- 6:42And the question I was asking was, am I saying this because I
- 6:45genuinely feel the door is close to the situation?
- 6:50Am I making a logical assessment?
- 6:53Or am I saying this out of fear or limiting belief, an excuse, a
- 6:57lack of ownership, any of those things?
- 7:00And guess what? I'll be honest with you, 9 times
- 7:05out of 10, whenever I was using the word.
- 7:08But it was my own limiting beliefs, it was my own
- 7:11disempowering stories. And if I said to myself, let's
- 7:16take the butt out of the sentence, it changed the whole
- 7:20game. If we were to go back to that
- 7:22example before, now the sentiment is simply, I'd really
- 7:26like to have a conversation with her.
- 7:28Period. And with that sentiment, now we
- 7:33have access to solutions. Because when I say I'd really
- 7:37like to have a conversation with her, I've clearly stated the
- 7:40desire in my mind and I can start to figure out how to move
- 7:44towards what I want or what I need, how I need to act, how I
- 7:47need to communicate, whatever it might be.
- 7:50You take the butt out of it. And here's the thing, I
- 7:54understand you might be listening to this saying, well,
- 7:57this is getting a little nitpicky stuff.
- 8:00But you would be amazed at how some of these simple little
- 8:04things that we do every day, the simple little things that we
- 8:07say, the stories we repeat, the little thoughts we repeat over
- 8:11and over, they can add up to an overall sense of well-being.
- 8:15Or not Even the simplest ways of showing up or talking or
- 8:20thinking can influence whether or not we have a great day, a
- 8:24great week, a great month, or a pretty mediocre day.
- 8:30And we all know people who are walking around saying, I've had
- 8:33a terrible week, I've had a terrible month.
- 8:35This has been a terrible year. And they say that year after
- 8:39year after year, you're going to hear it.
- 8:41January 1st, can't wait for 2026, can't wait for this
- 8:46dumpster fire to be over. You're going to start to hear
- 8:49it. And I guarantee a lot of those
- 8:51people are going to be the same people who said it about the
- 8:54year before and the year before. And I'm not saying that out of
- 8:58judgement. What I'm saying is that we have
- 9:01to recognize that we can get into habits with our stories and
- 9:05our language without even knowing it.
- 9:08And when you can chip away at this stuff and be consistently
- 9:11more intentional about the energy that you're bringing it
- 9:14into every room, into every conversation, guys, you'd be
- 9:19amazed at how fast things start to transform in your life.
- 9:25Now, I don't think about this in terms of perfection, and I'm not
- 9:28saying that you have to look for a hidden meaning behind every
- 9:31sentence. But I do think we can examine it
- 9:33from a place of investigation and curiosity and just see
- 9:38what's true here. Am I coming from a place of
- 9:41fear, excuse, lack of ownership? Or am I coming from a true
- 9:45honest place of just stating my emotions or stating my concerns?
- 9:50Then you'll be able to understand what's valid and
- 9:52what's not when I catch myself saying that word.
- 9:57But I can look at it now and I can know if I'm in my power or
- 10:02if I'm not, if I'm taking ownership or not, If I'm putting
- 10:06blame or responsibility outside of myself on external
- 10:10circumstances or other people or the weather or the traffic or my
- 10:14own fear, I can look at that and honestly examine it.
- 10:20I don't want to have the disempowering caveat using the
- 10:25word, but what I'd rather do is just state plainly what it is
- 10:29that I want or need or desire, and then have a path forward to
- 10:35go for it. That's the practice anyway.
- 10:38So my challenge to you this week is to just examine your own
- 10:43language, specifically around this word, but see if you can
- 10:47investigate it a little bit and see, is this disempowering or is
- 10:52it true? Is it valid?
- 10:54And hopefully it can reveal some of those blind spots or those
- 10:59negative stories that you don't actually want influencing your
- 11:03energy or your impact. So I hope this helps, team.
- 11:08I hope you have an amazing rest of the week.
