- Lucas: Welcome back to Learn Swahili with Fexingo! I'm Lucas. Luna: And I'm Luna. Episode 22, can you believe it? Lucas: I know, right? We've learned so much already. Today, we're going to talk about places in town. Luna: Places! Like where we go every day. I'm excited. Lucas: Perfect. So, the first place is a very common one: market. In Swahili, market is 'soko'. Luna: Soko. Lucas: Exactly. But when we say 'to the market' or 'at the market', we add a suffix. It becomes 'sokoni'. Luna: Sokoni. So soko is market, sokoni is at the market or to the market? Lucas: That's right. Listen: 'sokoni'. Luna: Sokoni. I like how it sounds. Lucas: Now, let's use it in a sentence. 'I am going to the market.' In Swahili: 'Ninaenda sokoni'. Luna: Ninaenda sokoni. Let me break that down: ninaenda means I am going, and sokoni is to the market. Lucas: Perfect! Your turn. Luna: Ninaenda sokoni. Lucas: Yes! You got it. Now, imagine you're telling a friend where you're headed. Say it with confidence. Luna: Ninaenda sokoni. Lucas: Wonderful. Now, another common place: school. School is 'shule'. Luna: Shule. Lucas: And to say 'to school' or 'at school', we say 'shuleni'. Luna: Shuleni. So it's like sokoni but with shule. Lucas: Exactly. So 'I am going to school' is 'Ninaenda shuleni'. Luna: Ninaenda shuleni. Lucas: Great. Now, what about 'I am going to the market'? Can you say that? Luna: Ninaenda sokoni. Lucas: Nice. And 'I am going to school'? Luna: Ninaenda shuleni. Lucas: You're on a roll. Let's add one more: hospital. Hospital is 'hospitali'. Luna: Hospitali. That sounds similar to English. Lucas: It does! And 'to the hospital' is 'hospitalini'. Luna: Hospitalini. So ninaenda hospitalini means I am going to the hospital. Lucas: Exactly. Try saying it. Luna: Ninaenda hospitalini. Lucas: Perfect. Now let me ask you a question. Where are you going? Let's practice. Ninaenda sokoni, shuleni, or hospitalini? Luna: Hmm. Leo, ninaenda sokoni. Today I'm going to the market. Lucas: Ah, unakwenda sokoni? Nice! You used 'leo' from our weather episode. Luna: Yes! I remembered. So leo ninaenda sokoni. Lucas: That's a full sentence. Let's hear it again. Luna: Leo ninaenda sokoni. Lucas: Fabulous. Now, let's do a quick review. I'll say a place in English, you say it in Swahili with the proper form. Market. Luna: Sokoni. Lucas: School. Luna: Shuleni. Lucas: Hospital. Luna: Hospitalini. Lucas: Now, full sentences: 'I am going to school.' Luna: Ninaenda shuleni. Lucas: I am going to the hospital. Luna: Ninaenda hospitalini. Lucas: And I am going to the market. Luna: Ninaenda sokoni. Lucas: Wow, you're a natural. Let's imagine a little scene. Say you're at a bus stop and someone asks you, 'Unaenda wapi?' which means 'Where are you going?' But we haven't learned that question yet. So for now, just imagine they ask. How would you answer? Luna: Ninaenda sokoni. Lucas: Exactly. Or if you were going to school? Luna: Ninaenda shuleni. Lucas: And if you were going to the hospital? Luna: Ninaenda hospitalini. Lucas: You've got it. Now, we also know 'kula' and 'kunywa' from last episode. So if you're at the market, you might eat something. 'Ninakula sokoni' — I am eating at the market. Luna: Ninakula sokoni. That's cool. So we can combine places with verbs. Lucas: Yes! And 'Ninakunywa shuleni' — I am drinking at school. But maybe not during class. Luna: Right. 'Ninakunywa maji shuleni' — I am drinking water at school. Lucas: Love it. You're using 'maji' from episode 19. Great callback. Luna: Thanks. So today we learned three places: sokoni, shuleni, hospitalini. And we can say where we're going. Lucas: Exactly. Let's do a final round of repetition. Repeat after me: sokoni. Luna: Sokoni. Lucas: Shuleni. Luna: Shuleni. Lucas: Hospitalini. Luna: Hospitalini. Lucas: Ninaenda sokoni. Luna: Ninaenda sokoni. Lucas: Ninaenda shuleni. Luna: Ninaenda shuleni. Lucas: Ninaenda hospitalini. Luna: Ninaenda hospitalini. Lucas: Fantastic. And remember, you can practice by telling yourself where you're going each day. 'Leo ninaenda...' and then the place. Luna: That's a good habit. I'll try that. Lucas: Of course. That's all we have for today on Learn Swahili with Fexingo. Thanks for listening! Luna: As always, practice these phrases and we'll see you next time. Kwaheri! Lucas: Kwaheri!
