Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Ryan Bridge: How do we get back work ethic?
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: I was reading a paper last night and a number
- 0:02Speaker 1: jumped out of me. A number shocked me, and I
- 0:03Speaker 1: think it should shock all of us. In the UK,
- 0:06Speaker 1: they had a government commissioned review looking at young people
- 0:10Speaker 1: and why they're not as active as generations that went
- 0:13Speaker 1: before them. Where's the go get them? Where's the whin
- 0:16Speaker 1: the morning, win the day? Where's the rattle your DAGs
- 0:18Speaker 1: and make it all happen attitude? That sort of thing.
- 0:21Speaker 1: Britain basically has the same problem New Zealand has, which
- 0:24Speaker 1: is that the same problem that most of the developed
- 0:27Speaker 1: world has, which is kids not in school, not in
- 0:30Speaker 1: a job, or not in any kind of training. Britain
- 0:33Speaker 1: has a million of them. We have a youth unemployment
- 0:36Speaker 1: rate here of about seventeen percent. That's near record. These
- 0:40Speaker 1: aren't the numbers that caught my eye. The UK report
- 0:44Speaker 1: had survey results. Here's where it gets interesting. Twenty seven
- 0:49Speaker 1: percent of Britain's believed success depended mainly on work. Just
- 0:54Speaker 1: twenty seven percent Half thought young people had fewer opportunities
- 0:59Speaker 1: than generation that went before them. The shocking part of
- 1:03Speaker 1: this is that people believe this and it's categorically untrue.
- 1:08Speaker 1: You need not go back too far into history to
- 1:10Speaker 1: realize food was hard to come by, work was what
- 1:13Speaker 1: you made it, and daily life was a struggle. Milk
- 1:17Speaker 1: came straight from a cow's teat and you had to
- 1:20Speaker 1: actually milk it yourself. I'm not saying the job market
- 1:24Speaker 1: isn't tough at the moment, no doubt it is. But
- 1:27Speaker 1: the difference between those who will succeed and those who
- 1:30Speaker 1: won't is whether or not they believe they can get there.
- 1:34Speaker 1: That's attitude, and somewhere along the way, now that milk
- 1:38Speaker 1: lives in a fridge and dinners are delivered by men
- 1:41Speaker 1: on scooters, our attitudes and motivations have gone a bit wayward.
