- 0:04Speaker 1: This is Walter o'keeth inviting you to listen in on
- 0:07Speaker 1: the nightline.
- 0:09Speaker 2: M h.
- 0:12Speaker 1: Tonight lived the incredible life of ages yet to come
- 0:17Speaker 1: in a time that might be a million years from
- 0:19Speaker 1: now on x minus one now an incredible story of
- 0:29Speaker 1: the world beyond.
- 0:34Speaker 3: God Dom for blast off X minus five four three
- 0:39Speaker 3: two x minus one Fire from the far horizons of
- 1:10Speaker 3: the unknown, comtails of new dimensions in time and space.
- 1:15Speaker 3: These are stories of the future adventures in which you'll
- 1:18Speaker 3: live in a million, could be years on a thousand,
- 1:21Speaker 3: maybe worlds. The National Broadcasting Company, in cooperation with Galaxies
- 1:26Speaker 3: Science Fiction Magazine presents he minus one tonight inside story
- 1:45Speaker 3: by Richard Wilson.
- 1:47Speaker 2: But first hear this.
- 1:49Speaker 4: I know a couple old friends that argue.
- 1:51Speaker 3: About everything, politics, world affairs, even the time of day.
- 1:56Speaker 3: One thing they agree on, though, is perhaps blue Ribbon
- 1:59Speaker 3: Draft bears. They say it's the best, and for a change,
- 2:03Speaker 3: they're both right. Perhaps blue Ribbon Draft is a bright,
- 2:06Speaker 3: modern tasting beer that still has plenty of that old
- 2:09Speaker 3: fashioned beer flavor. Next time you see that sign that
- 2:12Speaker 3: says perhaps blue Ribbon Beer on draft, stop in order
- 2:16Speaker 3: a glass. You'll soon know why so many folks agree
- 2:20Speaker 3: on the bright modern taste of perhaps blue Ribbon Beer
- 2:23Speaker 3: of Milwaukee now x minus one and inside story.
- 2:49Speaker 5: Every wire serviceman knows that when the legislature shuts down
- 2:52Speaker 5: for the hot weather, when it gets too warm for
- 2:54Speaker 5: crimes of passion, that's the start of the silly season.
- 2:57Speaker 5: It's the time when the teletype chatters about the largest
- 3:00Speaker 5: pumpkin grown and saw County, and the dog that found
- 3:02Speaker 5: its way home from Luna Base to the Coco Island
- 3:05Speaker 5: rocket Port. Well, it was the silly season. When I
- 3:08Speaker 5: reported the headquarters Martian Sector of the Galactic News Service
- 3:11Speaker 5: at Iopa. I found the bureau chief, Scott Warren, looking
- 3:15Speaker 5: sourly at a strip of copy.
- 3:18Speaker 6: GNS. Sinala ed lizards, lizards lizards. No light on the
- 3:24Speaker 6: longevity span of the Martian sand lizard was shed today
- 3:27Speaker 6: by the Sonala Zoological Society.
- 3:30Speaker 4: Now that is what I call hot news flash copy.
- 3:34Speaker 4: Dull day following a dull night. Was it like this
- 3:37Speaker 4: in New York? When you left?
- 3:38Speaker 5: They had me covering a kitten in a tree in
- 3:41Speaker 5: Gramercy Park.
- 3:43Speaker 6: I would sell my soul for a nice juicy cabinet.
- 3:46Speaker 6: Crises or else saw a little honest graft on a
- 3:49Speaker 6: spaceport contract.
- 3:50Speaker 5: Oh, have you got any leads?
- 3:51Speaker 7: No?
- 3:52Speaker 6: The Garrison Administration of Martian Colonial Affairs is depressingly honest.
- 3:56Speaker 5: When nothing's doing, you can stir it up a little,
- 3:59Speaker 5: you know, rattle the local skeleton in the closet, fan
- 4:02Speaker 5: the fires a little.
- 4:03Speaker 6: Have you read the Publication's Responsibility Act of nineteen ninety seven.
- 4:07Speaker 4: You can get twenty years for what you were thinking?
- 4:09Speaker 5: Look, what's the local canker? Saw? What would you like
- 4:11Speaker 5: most to get an inside story on something everybody covers up?
- 4:15Speaker 2: Well, there's druro.
- 4:18Speaker 4: Oh, but that's simon pure.
- 4:19Speaker 5: What's druro?
- 4:21Speaker 4: Nully sanctuary?
- 4:22Speaker 5: Oh, religious institution.
- 4:24Speaker 6: No, it's a quarantine set up for null gravity neurocatinosis
- 4:31Speaker 6: nulli fever. It's completely segregated. Nobody has ever gotten a
- 4:35Speaker 6: report out of there.
- 4:35Speaker 5: Well, it sounds like a natural.
- 4:37Speaker 6: Look, George, you're new. You don't fall around with nully
- 4:40Speaker 6: fever here on Mars. You like lighting a cigarette and
- 4:44Speaker 6: a powder magazine?
- 4:45Speaker 5: Chief, how would you like an inside story out of drawer?
- 4:48Speaker 4: You can't get in?
- 4:49Speaker 5: I will give eight to five. Now, Look who's in charge.
- 4:51Speaker 4: The Ministry of Health?
- 4:52Speaker 5: But okay, Okay, don't let the sandalers that take up
- 4:55Speaker 5: all the space I will get in. It wasn't so easy.
- 5:10Speaker 5: I did fine over at the Health Ministry until I
- 5:13Speaker 5: mentioned Druro, and then I might just as well have
- 5:15Speaker 5: had a galloping case of Nully fever myself. I was
- 5:18Speaker 5: referred to the press officer, to the assistant administrator, to
- 5:21Speaker 5: the Legal Department, the Protocol division, and then back to
- 5:24Speaker 5: the press officer. Finally I got in to see the commissioner,
- 5:27Speaker 5: Doctor Marx.
- 5:28Speaker 8: Just just what caused you to raise the question of Druro,
- 5:32Speaker 8: mister Gordon.
- 5:33Speaker 5: Look, doctor Marx, what I want is your permission to
- 5:36Speaker 5: visit Druro and get the inside story.
- 5:38Speaker 8: Visit Druro You mean inside the camp. Yes, that's right,
- 5:43Speaker 8: mister Gordon.
- 5:43Speaker 9: I am a.
- 5:44Speaker 8: Quoting Administrative Code Section sixty five. Any person found within
- 5:49Speaker 8: the perimeter at Druro is considered to be a Nully
- 5:52Speaker 8: fever victim. Contagion is something like ninety nine percent certain
- 5:57Speaker 8: at a range of one hundred yards. What's the treat girl,
- 6:01Speaker 8: You mean they're just shoved there to rot or nully.
- 6:04Speaker 8: Mister Gordon will rot wherever he is. He deteriorates to
- 6:08Speaker 8: the point of total sterility. Take my advice forget it.
- 6:26Speaker 5: Naturally, I didn't forget it. I did more research. I
- 6:30Speaker 5: found out that nully fever seemed to be a mutated
- 6:32Speaker 5: virus that got that way in the early Earth Mars
- 6:34Speaker 5: rockets that had inadequate radiological shielding. The symptoms masqueraded as
- 6:39Speaker 5: half a dozen diseases, but the end product was the same,
- 6:42Speaker 5: a physical deterioration that I don't care to go into,
- 6:45Speaker 5: and a psychological lowering to an animal state.
- 6:59Speaker 3: You're listening to inside the story the Night's Attraction on
- 7:03Speaker 3: X minus one. Now back to X minus one and
- 7:10Speaker 3: inside story.
- 7:15Speaker 5: I may be a little reckless following a story, but
- 7:17Speaker 5: believe me, there isn't a bonus big enough to make
- 7:19Speaker 5: a hero out of me. I had no intention of
- 7:21Speaker 5: contracting nully fever just to provide a byline story for
- 7:24Speaker 5: old GNS. I had stumbled on to something and I
- 7:27Speaker 5: was wearing it when I dropped into the bureau and
- 7:29Speaker 5: asked Scott if he noticed anything different about me.
- 7:33Speaker 4: You're putting on a little weight.
- 7:35Speaker 5: No, I'll guess again.
- 7:37Speaker 6: Your pants aren't hanging right, your shirt's are a bunch.
- 7:40Speaker 5: Of g That's because I am wearing the latest fashion,
- 7:42Speaker 5: an invisible suit.
- 7:44Speaker 4: Oh goodbye, try another one.
- 7:46Speaker 5: Look, I'm not kidding. It's heat proof and air tight.
- 7:49Speaker 5: They developed it over at Mass Electronics for spacesuit use.
- 7:52Speaker 4: You mean you're all buttoned up? Well, how do I
- 7:54Speaker 4: hear you?
- 7:55Speaker 5: Short way from a miniaturized dental mike. It's hanging on
- 7:58Speaker 5: a front tooth.
- 7:59Speaker 4: See you're not kidding. Well, how come it's invisible?
- 8:02Speaker 5: It beats me. Something to do with a non refractive coding.
- 8:06Speaker 5: You need that for dark side work on airless satellites.
- 8:08Speaker 5: I got an experimental model from a pro at me.
- 8:11Speaker 5: What's it good for outside of spaceship work? Not much,
- 8:14Speaker 5: except it is my ticket to Druro.
- 8:17Speaker 4: Now, wait, don't I get it?
- 8:19Speaker 5: Chi, I can't be infected, not with this sounon. It's
- 8:22Speaker 5: absolutely air tight. Don't worry. I'll be safe wrapped in
- 8:26Speaker 5: plaster film like chewing gum.
- 8:28Speaker 6: Yeah, but that won't get you past the perimeter into
- 8:30Speaker 6: the Nully camp.
- 8:32Speaker 5: Just leave that to me. I've got that figured out too.
- 8:44Speaker 5: I picked up a sam Cat out to the town
- 8:46Speaker 5: of Druro and waited for two days. There was a
- 8:48Speaker 5: shipment of nullies, the last of the sinal around him
- 8:51Speaker 5: do at the camp. Out of respect to public opinion,
- 8:54Speaker 5: they dump nullies at night, which suited me fine. About
- 9:03Speaker 5: one hundred nullies were going over the new comers like
- 9:06Speaker 5: kangaroo caught in the frontier jail. I don't think anybody
- 9:09Speaker 5: actually got killed, but they almost tore the new bunch
- 9:11Speaker 5: to pieces, grabbing cigarettes, jackknives, but the shoes, anything, and then,
- 9:16Speaker 5: like as not, the old timers would fight each other first.
- 9:19Speaker 5: The whole thing was over at dawn and I could
- 9:21Speaker 5: get a look around the camp. There were prefab huts
- 9:25Speaker 5: and some trees. I started over to one of the.
- 9:27Speaker 2: Huts, my hut.
- 9:29Speaker 5: Take it easy, friend, I am not going to hurt you. Look,
- 9:33Speaker 5: I'm your friend.
- 9:34Speaker 2: Sure you think you're going to steal my ration? Huh?
- 9:37Speaker 2: I'll kill you first.
- 9:38Speaker 5: How long have you been here?
- 9:40Speaker 2: Two years? Got a cigarette here?
- 9:42Speaker 10: No?
- 9:42Speaker 5: No, don't grab I'll toss you one.
- 9:44Speaker 2: Don't you make a move, tarde me sure?
- 9:45Speaker 5: Sure shoes? What were you before you got in here?
- 9:50Speaker 2: Huh?
- 9:51Speaker 10: A teacher and I open a technical I fixed them
- 9:56Speaker 10: before they got me. I cut down ten medics with
- 9:59Speaker 10: a our drill.
- 10:03Speaker 5: When is breakfast? Friend?
- 10:06Speaker 10: You go plenty hungry ration isn't till tomorrow. You think
- 10:11Speaker 10: there was some fight last night?
- 10:13Speaker 5: Wait?
- 10:13Speaker 10: Did you see ration drop last time? Somebody tried to
- 10:16Speaker 10: beat me to a ration case?
- 10:18Speaker 2: I fixed her? Never mind, never mind, don't tell.
- 10:20Speaker 4: Me about that.
- 10:22Speaker 5: Hey, what's that over there up the hill? Looks like
- 10:26Speaker 5: a regular fortress.
- 10:28Speaker 2: What are you trying to do hurt me? No?
- 10:31Speaker 5: No, I just asked you what goes on up there?
- 10:33Speaker 5: Those other huts inside that barricade?
- 10:36Speaker 2: You spying for them?
- 10:37Speaker 9: Yeah?
- 10:38Speaker 2: Sure you're spying for them.
- 10:41Speaker 9: You dirty.
- 10:52Speaker 5: It isn't easy to get used to dodging nasty backhand
- 10:56Speaker 5: punches that came out of the blue and were meant
- 10:57Speaker 5: to kill if possible. I got my I'm up in
- 11:00Speaker 5: time to catch about half the force, and the man
- 11:02Speaker 5: ran off with my pack of cigarettes. But there was
- 11:04Speaker 5: something up that hill worth looking into, a barricaded section
- 11:08Speaker 5: set apart from the rest. So I started up. When
- 11:12Speaker 5: I hit the woods, I stopped just three feet short
- 11:14Speaker 5: of a ten foot spear.
- 11:15Speaker 11: All right, you get back down a hill.
- 11:17Speaker 5: Now take it easy, will you? What's going on up here?
- 11:21Speaker 11: Oh, I'm get moving. I've got to there's the kill
- 11:24Speaker 11: if I have to.
- 11:25Speaker 5: You don't understand I just want to find out.
- 11:26Speaker 2: Sure you do.
- 11:27Speaker 11: They always do.
- 11:27Speaker 7: Every time there's a new batch, there's a few still
- 11:29Speaker 7: smart enough to plan together.
- 11:31Speaker 11: And they come up here spying.
- 11:32Speaker 5: Spying on what.
- 11:33Speaker 2: Look, I'm a knob tree.
- 11:34Speaker 11: And then you get it in the belly.
- 11:40Speaker 5: No hero I got before he reached one and a half.
- 11:44Speaker 5: That night I managed to talk to the ex teacher
- 11:46Speaker 5: without either of a slugging the other. I asked him
- 11:48Speaker 5: about the guard on the hill.
- 11:50Speaker 10: They get all the best rations, they make us give
- 11:53Speaker 10: up our food. Do they come kill us? They've got spears, knives.
- 11:58Speaker 5: You mean there's a gang up there living off the
- 12:00Speaker 5: rest of you. Yeah.
- 12:01Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 12:02Speaker 10: I killed one of them once according from behind with
- 12:06Speaker 10: the rock.
- 12:08Speaker 2: They came down and killed ten of us. Didn't get
- 12:12Speaker 2: me though, Funny, h.
- 12:23Speaker 5: I got the picture. It's been the same every time.
- 12:26Speaker 5: Men are heard it together like animals. Andersonville, Bukenwaald and Dachau.
- 12:31Speaker 5: The Alaskan camps in the seventies are now druro. The
- 12:34Speaker 5: strong live off the others, a kind of racketeering in spades.
- 12:37Speaker 5: Grab the best of everything, live as rich as you can,
- 12:39Speaker 5: and don't worry how many you leave to starve. To death.
- 12:42Speaker 4: We're gonna get him.
- 12:43Speaker 10: No tonight, got rocks together in clubs, go up there
- 12:48Speaker 10: and we'll get them.
- 12:51Speaker 2: You come.
- 12:57Speaker 5: I didn't have much choice. They would have torn me
- 12:59Speaker 5: up pine. About ten o'clock at night, the mob gathered
- 13:03Speaker 5: at the foot of the hill. Every once in a
- 13:05Speaker 5: while they'd swipe at each other with a club of
- 13:07Speaker 5: a rock, but mostly they shouted up at the hill,
- 13:09Speaker 5: and then suddenly, without any signal, they charged. It was
- 13:17Speaker 5: kind of sick men and women heaven knows what they
- 13:20Speaker 5: were before, teachers, mothers, anything, screaming and running up that hill.
- 13:24Speaker 5: And then the defenders cut loose that were torture so
- 13:26Speaker 5: I could see rocks roll down, boiling water, spears, arrows
- 13:29Speaker 5: enough to cut down that unarmed mob.
- 13:32Speaker 2: I was hiding behind a tree.
- 13:33Speaker 5: Man, sick, good and sick when it happened.
- 13:42Speaker 7: Hold on, bud, I'm gonna pull this arrow off. Oh
- 13:46Speaker 7: here it goes now Ooo? No where am I up
- 13:54Speaker 7: the hill?
- 13:54Speaker 11: That's where you wanted to go, isn't it?
- 13:56Speaker 4: But how did we dragged you up here?
- 13:59Speaker 11: Herb had some bandages up here.
- 14:02Speaker 5: Yeah you know one of them, aren't I want to
- 14:05Speaker 5: who the big shots, the kingpins gangsters.
- 14:09Speaker 4: You didn't get hit in the head, did you.
- 14:11Speaker 5: It's too bad they didn't wipe you out up here.
- 14:14Speaker 5: It's tough enough living in a place like this, but
- 14:16Speaker 5: to prey on the weak ones.
- 14:17Speaker 11: Fella, I think maybe you got the wrong idea.
- 14:20Speaker 5: Thank Heaven, I'm safe from this kind of.
- 14:23Speaker 4: Yeah. I wondered when you'd notice.
- 14:25Speaker 11: And fancy suit of yours got torn when the arrow hit.
- 14:30Speaker 5: No lily fever.
- 14:34Speaker 7: That's why we hauled you up here. We spotted something
- 14:37Speaker 7: funny about you. A kettle of boiling water splashed on you.
- 14:39Speaker 7: You didn't even notice.
- 14:41Speaker 5: Who are you, George Gordon, Galactic News Service.
- 14:45Speaker 4: A newsman? Listen?
- 14:47Speaker 12: Does anybody know you're in here? Yeah, maybe there's a chance.
- 14:51Speaker 12: Can you tell them?
- 14:51Speaker 2: They got to let us out.
- 14:53Speaker 12: Tell them what it's like up here. Make them understand.
- 14:55Speaker 12: We write messages for the ration planes and they ignore them.
- 14:58Speaker 12: You can't get close enough.
- 14:59Speaker 2: To the to shout.
- 15:00Speaker 4: They shoot you down.
- 15:01Speaker 2: They gotta let us out.
- 15:03Speaker 5: Oh sure, sure, After what I've seen, that's the last
- 15:06Speaker 5: thing I do try to con somebody into letting this
- 15:08Speaker 5: loose on the population. I've seen enough nullies. Even if
- 15:12Speaker 5: I have to spend the rest of my life in
- 15:13Speaker 5: this camp. I don't want to be responsible for making more.
- 15:15Speaker 4: Wait a minute, you don't get it.
- 15:17Speaker 12: We're not nullies up here.
- 15:18Speaker 5: What nobody gets in the camp.
- 15:21Speaker 2: Who isn't a nully?
- 15:23Speaker 11: That's right, We all had it when we came in,
- 15:25Speaker 11: but not anymore.
- 15:26Speaker 2: Up here. We're curs You're lying.
- 15:28Speaker 4: You've got to believe me.
- 15:30Speaker 12: We've been living up here for four years, keeping guard,
- 15:33Speaker 12: trying to live like human beings in the middle of
- 15:35Speaker 12: those animals down there, losing maybe three or four a
- 15:38Speaker 12: week fighting them off.
- 15:39Speaker 5: You know, you're more dangerous than they are down there,
- 15:41Speaker 5: because somehow you've kept some intelligence enough to want revenge
- 15:44Speaker 5: on the rest of the world by infecting.
- 15:45Speaker 4: Oh no, you've got to believe me.
- 15:48Speaker 2: We're cured.
- 15:50Speaker 12: Nolly fever can be cured somehow because we've done it,
- 15:53Speaker 12: about one hundred of us more now with the babies.
- 15:57Speaker 12: So what babies, normal healthy babies.
- 16:13Speaker 5: He pointed across the clearing to another hut, and I
- 16:16Speaker 5: saw it, a woman about thirty sitting on the doorsteps,
- 16:21Speaker 5: nursing a baby, an infant, And I heard the words
- 16:25Speaker 5: of the commissioner echoing in my ear, And of course,
- 16:29Speaker 5: total sterility these weren't nullies, not anymore. If they could
- 16:35Speaker 5: have babies, they must be cured. Living as a desperate
- 16:39Speaker 5: island in a mad world of violence. Well you know
- 16:50Speaker 5: the rest of it. You ought to It was carried
- 16:52Speaker 5: under my byline and every fact sheet on three planets.
- 16:55Speaker 5: They had a microtechnician up the hill who gimmicked my
- 16:58Speaker 5: miniature microphone with a hair and a piece of quartz crystal.
- 17:01Speaker 5: So I cut in on the main traffic beam between
- 17:03Speaker 5: Sinala and Iopia. I had Scott Warren at Government House
- 17:07Speaker 5: in fifteen minutes, struckting to blow the lid off the
- 17:09Speaker 5: whole colonial government. The babies did it aerial photographs with
- 17:13Speaker 5: micro enlargements. They had pictures of those babies on the
- 17:16Speaker 5: wire the next day. Red tape held it up a week,
- 17:19Speaker 5: but finally one hundred cured ex nullies and one reporter
- 17:22Speaker 5: were out of Druro at Iopa General Hospital for checks.
- 17:25Speaker 5: They found it. Nully fever is psychosomatic. You take somebody
- 17:29Speaker 5: strong enough to fight for survival, give him incentive, and
- 17:32Speaker 5: he'll lick it by himself. No miracle drugs needed. It
- 17:36Speaker 5: starts with a virus, all right, but it ends with psychotherapy.
- 17:40Speaker 5: A good dose of willpower. I got back to work
- 17:43Speaker 5: in a month.
- 17:46Speaker 6: Welcome back, George Tea Times dead is ever back to
- 17:51Speaker 6: the longevity of the Martian Sanders.
- 17:53Speaker 5: In dru Nully story played out.
- 17:56Speaker 4: That is last week's Erry.
- 17:58Speaker 2: Now what else is new?
- 18:00Speaker 5: Maybe we can find another skeleton in the closset. How
- 18:03Speaker 5: about life on the Martian movements?
- 18:05Speaker 9: Now?
- 18:05Speaker 5: That WoT be good for a headline?
- 18:24Speaker 3: Fred Collins again, and I'll have a word for you
- 18:27Speaker 3: about next week's X minus one.
- 18:29Speaker 11: In a moment, Hey, Molly, it's me.
- 18:38Speaker 2: Where are you here?
- 18:39Speaker 9: Begin?
- 18:39Speaker 10: What's the matter?
- 18:40Speaker 5: Are you doing anything?
- 18:41Speaker 13: Am I doing anything? I've got a towel wrapped around
- 18:44Speaker 13: my head, a broom in one hand, a bucket of
- 18:46Speaker 13: soap and water in the other, and the kitchen curtains
- 18:49Speaker 13: under my arm. And you ask me if I'm doing anything. Sure,
- 18:52Speaker 13: I'm vacationing in Florida.
- 18:55Speaker 5: Here here, Molly, let me take this stuff.
- 18:56Speaker 4: What are you doing?
- 18:57Speaker 11: Just sit down, sit right here.
- 19:00Speaker 5: You're a sweet maggie.
- 19:00Speaker 14: But I've gone You can go back to work in
- 19:02Speaker 14: a minute. I got something big to tell you, you.
- 19:04Speaker 4: Know, something really big. What have you gone down?
