British Library plans to turn three reading rooms into rentable workspaces
The British Library plans to repurpose three Science and Social Sciences Reading Rooms as flexible workspaces available for hire by workers and businesses. In an email to readers, it said work would begin next summer. The library said the change would help generate the revenue needed to keep its core services free. The Prospect and Public and Commercial Services unions say the plan has provoked outrage among staff. A strike could begin as soon as December, following a strike over low pay last year.
