- 0:00Have you ever thought about buying a boat?
- 0:02I'm gonna share a story today about why I've always been interested in boats and
- 0:07why I'm interested in purchasing a boat.
- 0:08But now, after learning about what we're gonna be talking about in today's
- 0:12episode of the boat-sharing economy, I have maybe changed my mind about boat
- 0:17ownership, but I'd still be able to get out on the boat whenever I need it.
- 0:21So we're gonna talk about that on today's episode of the How
- 0:23to Protect the Ocean podcast.
- 0:25This is a podcast where you find out everything about ocean news from what's
- 0:28happening in science, the latest trends, some of the advocacy things that are
- 0:31going on, and some of the business end trends that we're seeing in being able to
- 0:36have a sustainable business that is good for the environment, good for people,
- 0:40and good for the economy all in one.
- 0:42About like a triple bottom line, and make some money of course.
- 0:45And so that'll always be good, and this is where we talk about Monday to Friday.
- 0:49So if you like this type of information, feel free to hit that follow button,
- 0:52because this is where you're gonna get it.
- 0:54And we have an interview, and we're talking about businesses and how people
- 0:57are making wages and sustainable decisions about businesses and having businesses
- 1:01that allow people to be better for the environment all week this week.
- 1:05And on Friday we have an interview with Alexandre Mongeon, who owns a
- 1:08boat-selling business, and he sells boats, and we're gonna hear about electric
- 1:12motors and why those are so great.
- 1:14We're gonna hear about it today too, 'cause in the boat-sharing economy,
- 1:17electric motors are actually really handy.
- 1:19So we're gonna talk about that today.
- 1:20Now first, a little story.
- 1:22Okay, so when I was a kid, I was always interested in being a marine biologist.
- 1:25I would talk to my dad, I would talk to my mom about it.
- 1:28My dad was on a fishing boat briefly when he was a kid, right
- 1:31out of high school in Quebec City.
- 1:33And I remember him talking these stories and talking and talking about being on
- 1:36this boat and being fishing, and he says he'd always loved to get a big sailboat.
- 1:40And of course, you know, when I was a kid I'm like, "Dad, one day I'm going
- 1:43to buy you a boat. Like, that is my dream. I'm gonna get you that boat."
- 1:46And so it was almost like an on-running joke.
- 1:48I don't think my dad ever expected me to buy a boat.
- 1:51I think he would've been happy with a boat.
- 1:52I never did buy him a boat before he passed away, but
- 1:54we always talked about it.
- 1:55And of course, we would get lavish with a yacht, and he's like, "Well,
- 1:58I don't wanna drive the boat.
- 1:59I want a captain and I want a crew, and take your mom everywhere, and
- 2:02take you and your brother everywhere around the world," and all this kind
- 2:04of stuff like we were millionaires.
- 2:07And we weren't but we, you know, we did all right.
- 2:08But not enough to get, like, a big yacht like that.
- 2:11But that's something that I valued.
- 2:12I wanted to get that for him, and deep down I still wanna get one.
- 2:16Like, over the last couple months I've been really looking at buying a boat
- 2:20because of those stories and because it reminds me of my dad now that he's gone.
- 2:24But also, I've always wanted to have a boat.
- 2:27But I don't always need a boat, 'cause the thing is, it's a big investment.
- 2:30You know, you're looking at tens of thousands of dollars, if not
- 2:33hundreds of thousands of dollars, almost like another mortgage.
- 2:36It's costly to maintain and it's a tough thing to have for a lot of people.
- 2:39So I'm always at that point where I'm like, "I want to be able to have a
- 2:44boat whenever I go to a cottage or if I wanna go out on the day to do something,
- 2:49and that would be kinda cool to do.
- 2:50And to be honest, I never really thought you could rent boats, or I
- 2:54did know you could rent boats, but I thought it'd be extremely expensive.
- 2:56I didn't think there'd be a lot of people who did it.
- 2:58Apparently, the boat-sharing economy is growing.
- 3:01So apparently, as of, the last study in 2026, valued the boat-renting
- 3:06market between 19 and $23 billion US, depending on the research firm
- 3:12that you're looking at, but it's growing roughly 5 to 7% annually.
- 3:17And full electric boats are the fastest-growing power source segment
- 3:21in boat rentals, projected at about 17.62% compound annual growth
- 3:26rate through 2031, compared to gas-powered boats rentals, which will
- 3:31still dominate the current market.
- 3:33So that's a pretty big deal.
- 3:34It's increasing.
- 3:35I'll be honest, I didn't hear much about the electric boating industry until this
- 3:39week, and I've done one other interview with an electric boating company.
- 3:44But they were like a smaller type company that were designing their own
- 3:47engines, just like Alexander's gonna talk about today, but he's got a bigger
- 3:51platform to work off, and we're gonna hear more about that this Friday.
- 3:54But you have these peer-to-peer platforms now called GetMyBoat or
- 3:58Boatsetter or Click&Boat and Sandboat.
- 4:01They're expanding access-based boating instead of ownership.
- 4:04So if I didn't want to own a boat and pay for all the maintenance, and I
- 4:07don't really know what I'm doing.
- 4:08Every time I hear about buying boats, people are like, "Well,
- 4:11if you buy a boat, you're always fixing the boat, so be prepared
- 4:14to have a budget to fix the boat."
- 4:16So it's nice to have something that where it's like if I wanna go out on the water
- 4:20and I wanna be on the water, I wanna be in nature, I like hiking and everything,
- 4:23but I'd rather be on the water.
- 4:25I can actually rent a boat and go out.
- 4:26I don't have to invest the money to go out and do that.
- 4:28It's almost like cottaging in Ontario right now.
- 4:31If you want to go to a cottage, you can rent a cottage, and you can spend
- 4:35a good amount that week, but you can rent a cottage, and it'll feel good.
- 4:38Like, you'll have the amount of money that you need to have or you'll
- 4:41have what you need, and you can have fun, and you can return that boat.
- 4:43Maybe you'll be able to get that boat another time.
- 4:45In a cottage, you can do the same thing.
- 4:47You can rent the cottage, you can go stay at the cottage, and then you're done.
- 4:50You don't have to worry about maintenance.
- 4:51You don't have to worry about upkeep.
- 4:52You just enjoy.
- 4:52You pay a little bit more, but if you're only using it for the
- 4:55week, maybe two weeks, it's more like a vacation than anything else.
- 4:58You're not gonna go out and buy a hotel room at a resort, or
- 5:01some people do, at a timeshare.
- 5:02But it's nice to be able to go and just not have to worry about
- 5:06the cottage that you're at.
- 5:06It's the same thing with boats.
- 5:08It's nice to be able to rent a boat, go out and enjoy that
- 5:11time, and then come back.
- 5:13When you're done, you just give it back.
- 5:14And as long as you keep it in good shape while you're using
- 5:16it, then it's pretty good.
- 5:18And so membership and boat club models are growing faster than
- 5:21traditional ownership and this is according to industry trend reports.
- 5:24So that's pretty cool.
- 5:25Because like, let's be honest, like I said, boat ownership has, like, they carry
- 5:29a high upfront cost, and the maintenance burdens, like, I don't wanna have to
- 5:33deal with or most people try to avoid.
- 5:35And then digital booking platforms have made peer-to-peer and short-term
- 5:38rental far more convenient than having to look it up on a website, send
- 5:43an email, wait for that to come back, and all that kind of stuff.
- 5:45And then you got, from the boat rental position, you have electric propulsion
- 5:49that has a lower maintenance requirements 'cause like, my electric vehicle, I have
- 5:53a Tesla, my electric vehicle, when I bring it in, I bring it in once a year.
- 5:57And the maintenance is a lot lower than it would with my gas-powered car.
- 6:02So an electric propulsion boat would be the same as a gas-powered boat.
- 6:06It'd be less maintenance every year.
- 6:07And so when you have lower maintenance requirements than combustion
- 6:10engines, that makes electric boats a lot more attractive for rental
- 6:14fleet operators specifically.
- 6:15And then since like fewer moving parts means like less of that downtime, right?
- 6:19So you're not fixing that boat all the time.
- 6:21' Cause let's be honest, like the one thing, if I were an owner and I was renting
- 6:24out boats, I would be worried about what people are doing to that boat, and all the
- 6:29little things in the motor that could go wrong that will allow for more upkeep on
- 6:35the boat and more maintenance on the boat.
- 6:36You'd be paying a lot more maintenance fees.
- 6:38Whereas an electric boat, there are less parts, and it might be more expensive
- 6:42to fix if it needs fixing, but you'd probably have to do it less times.
- 6:45And so that's always a great thing.
- 6:46Now, of course, the interesting thing too about rentals, like with the
- 6:49shared use models, means fewer total boats and engines that are needed
- 6:52to serve same number of boaters.
- 6:54Not everybody could afford a boat, just like not everybody could afford a cottage.
- 6:57And reducing manufacturing demand and fuel use per person on the water
- 7:02would be a great advantage as more and more people are renting out
- 7:05cottages and they're going to cottages.
- 7:07They wanna be on the water.
- 7:09Like I see in my neighborhood, I don't know what it is, but a
- 7:11lot of boats are being bought.
- 7:12I think what happened is during COVID, a lot of people bought boats,
- 7:15and then now are selling them for cheaper because they don't need boats.
- 7:18So I think that's kind of interesting in that respect.
- 7:20So I think electric motors are making a big push.
- 7:23And then, the first-time renters make up to close to 38% of the total
- 7:27customers in some of these markets.
- 7:29That suggests that like the access model is pulling new boaters rather
- 7:33than converting existing boaters.
- 7:34So people who are boaters, they may like the boat ownership 'cause they're
- 7:37used to it, they're used to that model.
- 7:39But for people like me who've never owned a boat, and I may not have the
- 7:42ability to buy a boat and then afford the maintenance, and I just only
- 7:46use it like once or twice a year, it doesn't make sense for that for me.
- 7:50So this is a way to really go out and get that information there, and I
- 7:54think that's really, really important.
- 7:56The politics around all of it is that marina infrastructure
- 7:59investment's gonna have to increase.
- 8:00It's gonna have to include more shore charging stations, which is
- 8:03being driven by both private rental operators and in parts of Europe and
- 8:07North America, municipal waterfront upgrade programs, which is kinda nice.
- 8:11And there's no major federal regulatory push specifically for
- 8:14electric rental fleets yet, but the growth so far is market driven.
- 8:18At marinas, you're probably gonna start to see a charging
- 8:20station as well as gas stations.
- 8:22So I think that's gonna be real interesting of who plays that role,
- 8:24who's gonna be involved, and what goes into it when people are gonna be using
- 8:28it for marinas and stuff like that.
- 8:30And of course, with rentals like cottage rentals, are they gonna have an electric
- 8:33charging station on their docks if they're starting to have that so people can
- 8:37actually just charge right on the dock?
- 8:38That's a big thing.
- 8:39Or bring their electric charger from the house to the boat.
- 8:42That'll be interesting as well.
- 8:44If you enjoy boats and you don't wanna buy a boat, you can consider renting it or
- 8:48joining a boat club instead of buying it,
- 8:50especially if you're just gonna use it a little bit.
- 8:52And then when renting, you ask operators whether electric options are available
- 8:56so you're not using as much gas.
- 8:57Let's be honest, if you use electric, as long as there's a charging
- 9:00station involved or somewhere you can charge, then you are looking at a
- 9:03much cheaper time because you're not gonna have to worry about gas, you're
- 9:07not gonna worry about moving gas.
- 9:08And let's be honest, electric motor compared to a gas-powered propulsion
- 9:12motor, you're gonna be able to drive the boat and still talk to your family.
- 9:15You're not gonna have to worry about the noise pollution, the smell, any worry
- 9:19about spillage or anything like that.
- 9:21And of course, you can support marinas that invest in shore power and
- 9:24charging infrastructure by charging the boats that you rent there.
- 9:27There's a lot of things that you can do that are directly
- 9:29related to you doing the work.
- 9:31And then of course, you can always push for more charging stations
- 9:34at docks as well as marinas.
- 9:36So I think there's a lot of things that we can do here as
- 9:39individuals, which is great to know.
- 9:41That's it for today's episode.
- 9:42I think this is always interesting when we're talking about new businesses
- 9:45that are profiting off of the sustainability of the world, really.
- 9:49And this may not make huge changes in global climate change, but it's
- 9:53gonna help in just the way we, react.
- 9:54It helps us feel like we're doing something good for the ocean.
- 9:57It helps us save costs overall, and we don't have to own a boat, but you can
- 10:01rent a boat, so that's always great.
- 10:02And an electric motor, you can always try it out.
- 10:04If you wanna buy a boat, you can always try out an electric motor when you
- 10:07rent one for the weekend or for the week, and I think that's really cool.
- 10:10All right.
- 10:10That's it for today's episode.
