- 0:00Welcome to Tabernacle Talk. Tabernacle Talk is a Bible study
- 0:03podcast brought from Tabernacle Baptist Church in Essex, MD.
- 0:07I'm your host, Brian Self. We hope this podcast encourages
- 0:10you to know Christ, grow in his word, and show his love to
- 0:14others. Let's dive right in.
- 0:15Welcome back to Tabernacle Talk. I am super excited for this next
- 0:20section of the word that we're going to be in and we are
- 0:23looking at the book of Isaiah. And Isaiah was a prophet in the
- 0:28Old Testament. If I had to take a guess, many
- 0:31of you have heard from a couple portions of Isaiah before
- 0:35because that's a lot of what I've heard from Isaiah before.
- 0:39Isaiah chapter 6, Isaiah 53, and Isaiah 7 and 9.
- 0:45So Isaiah 6 is Isaiah looking at God in his like holy temple.
- 0:53Isaiah 7 is the prophecy about Emmanuel.
- 0:56Isaiah 9 is where we get the wonderful counselor, mighty God,
- 1:03everlasting Father. Like that portion comes from
- 1:06Isaiah 9. And then Isaiah 53 is the
- 1:09suffering servant that Jesus is this one that was prophesied
- 1:13that bore our iniquities in his own body on the tree.
- 1:19And so those are like the four sections of Isaiah that I think
- 1:24a lot of Christians have heard from, heard messages from.
- 1:28But what we're going to do is we are going to go through this
- 1:32book together. Now, I right before I hit play
- 1:37or I hit record on today's episode, I looked back through a
- 1:43Edible Project summary video of the book of Isaiah.
- 1:47And I want to encourage you. I have attached that in the show
- 1:50notes. Go watch that.
- 1:52And that will give you a wonderful overview of what this
- 1:56book entails. Isaiah is 66 chapters.
- 2:00So I'm not going to lie to you guys.
- 2:01We might be in Isaiah for, you know, three to six months.
- 2:06It wouldn't totally surprise me. Now it may go quicker than that,
- 2:09but I just want to let you guys know we're going to be here for
- 2:11a hot minute, and I love Isaiah. Isaiah is one of those portions
- 2:16of Scripture that Jesus himself so loved.
- 2:20He quotes from Isaiah often. When you look at the New
- 2:24Testament authors, one of the books that they quote most
- 2:26often, they love the book of Psalms and they love the book of
- 2:31Isaiah. Or technically, I think if I
- 2:34want to get a little more accurate, I'd say the scroll of
- 2:36Isaiah. So I'm also going to let you
- 2:39guys know for those that are watching the video version of
- 2:43this podcast, I am trying out something new.
- 2:47And so if after I record these first like 2 episodes, if I'm
- 2:53like, man, this is just not working at all, then I will not
- 2:57do the new format. But what I am doing is pulling
- 3:01up a, my, my Bible study software, Logos Bible study, and
- 3:08I am actually showing you guys exactly what I'm seeing on my
- 3:13screen. So as I'm working through
- 3:14verses, like all, you know, show you guys exactly what I am
- 3:19looking at and you can follow through with me visually if
- 3:21that's the way that you use the podcast.
- 3:24So I am so, so, so thrilled to be looking through this portion
- 3:29of Scripture. It was important to Jesus.
- 3:31It was important to the apostles.
- 3:33It is in God's word. And so it ought to be important
- 3:36to you and to me. Isaiah was a prophet in the Old
- 3:41Testament. He was one that declared
- 3:43especially to kings and to rulers what God had said, where
- 3:49the people of God were failing to obey God or to worship him,
- 3:54or when they were worshiping other gods or putting their
- 3:57trust in things other than Yahweh.
- 4:00And so Isaiah, to his own endangerment tradition would
- 4:06tell us Isaiah would end up getting sawed in the half as a
- 4:10result of his preaching, and he might be the person referenced
- 4:15in Hebrews 11 as one that was in the old King James wording sawn
- 4:21asunder. And so Isaiah preached during
- 4:26the reigns of 45 kings of Judah Uzziah, also known as Azariah,
- 4:33Jotham, Ahaz, Hezekiah, and then possibly killed during the reign
- 4:39of Manasseh. King Uzziah was known as a good
- 4:46king. He was not a perfect king.
- 4:48We'll talk about that more, I think, once we get to chapter 6.
- 4:51Hezekiah was known as a good king.
- 4:54The other kings were not known or not renowned for their
- 4:59goodness or their following of the Lord.
- 5:01And so Isaiah preached during a time when Israel was operating
- 5:06as though Yahweh was not enough. Yahweh was in the mix of the
- 5:10gods that they were serving. He was even the primary God that
- 5:15they were serving. But they did not believe that
- 5:17God was enough. They thought others needed to be
- 5:21added in to the worship of God. This is something that we see
- 5:25even archaeologically, that people were worshipping Yahweh,
- 5:29the God of Israel, at the same time as they were worshipping
- 5:32Baal from the Canaanites or Marduk from the Babylonians.
- 5:36And So what we're going to see in the book of Isaiah is that
- 5:40God deserves our exclusive, wholehearted worship.
- 5:45So let's dive in to verse #1 today for those of you that are
- 5:50like, oh man, I really, really want AI.
- 5:54Want a quick Tabernacle talk? Let let me cue you in.
- 5:59I do not have a specific amount of verses that I am looking to
- 6:03complete today. And so when it's about time,
- 6:06I'll wrap it up for the day and I'll say see you next episode so
- 6:09you can be excited for that. I'm going to pull up my Bible
- 6:13software right now and let's dive into the Word of God
- 6:16together. Isaiah chapter 1 and verse #1
- 6:20the vision concerning Judah and Jerusalem that Isaiah son of
- 6:25Amos saw during the reign, the reigns of kings Uzziah, Jotham,
- 6:31Ahaz, and Hezekiah of Judah. As a reminder, at this point in
- 6:36time there are two nations of God's people, the Israelites.
- 6:41The northern Kingdom called Israel or sometimes called
- 6:44Ephraim or Samaria after its capital city, or the southern
- 6:51Kingdom of Judah with Jerusalem as its capital city.
- 6:56So Isaiah is in the southern Kingdom.
- 6:58The northern Kingdom had no kings that followed God or
- 7:02worshipped him. The southern Kingdom had a few
- 7:04kings, even as I mentioned earlier, Uzziah and Hezekiah, as
- 7:10well as Josiah, few others that did follow the Lord.
- 7:14So he has some good kings during this time period, but Isaiah is
- 7:19in the southern Kingdom. This would happen about a
- 7:23hundred, 150 years before the southern Kingdom of Judah is
- 7:28destroyed by Babylon for reasons that we begin today.
- 7:33Verse #2 This is what Isaiah saw concerning Judah says listen
- 7:41heavens and pay attention earth, for Yahweh has spoken.
- 7:45I have raised children and brought them up, but they have
- 7:49rebelled against me. The ox knows its owner and the
- 7:53donkey it's masters feeding through, but Israel does not
- 7:57know. My people do not understand.
- 8:00O sinful nation, people weighed down with iniquity, brood of
- 8:05evil doers, depraved children, they have abandoned Yahweh, they
- 8:10have despised the Holy One of Israel.
- 8:12They have turned their backs on Him.
- 8:16OK, let's look first at these verses, verses 2 through 4.
- 8:21So God is raising, if you will, in court with the heavens and
- 8:26earth. So again, think Genesis one, in
- 8:28the beginning God created the heavens and the earth, the skies
- 8:31and the land. He is declaring to both all well
- 8:35to all creation, but earth where man is and in the skies where
- 8:41the spiritual beings are. So he says, listen up everyone,
- 8:45the ruler of everything, Yahweh, the Lord has spoken.
- 8:49He says I've raised children and brought them up, but they have
- 8:51rebelled against me. If anyone on planet earth should
- 8:57have gone, Oh yeah, God's been really good to us, I think we
- 9:00should obey him and follow him. Certainly it would be Israel,
- 9:04Israel that was taken from Egypt, Israel that had been
- 9:09brought through the Red Sea, Israel that had been sustained
- 9:13in the wilderness for 40 years, Israel that had experienced the
- 9:16conquest of Canaan and had emerged victorious, not as a
- 9:19result of their military might, but as a result of the help of
- 9:23God Almighty. These are certainly the people
- 9:26that should have worshipped and followed God because he had been
- 9:29so good to them, but they rebelled against God.
- 9:34I just want to speak real quick to parents that perhaps you
- 9:39raised children and you raised them in the Christian faith.
- 9:43You read the Bible with them. You you taught them about the
- 9:48importance of gathering together with God's people.
- 9:52Just because your children do not adopt your faith does not
- 9:57mean that you somehow failed them.
- 10:02It could be, I don't know every situation, but here God's
- 10:06children left and abandoned him. They rebelled against God, and
- 10:11certainly there was no fault in God that would occasion them
- 10:15having left him. But we are each individually
- 10:19responsible for our walk with the Lord.
- 10:22And so I, I want to provide a little bit of comfort here.
- 10:26If you're like, Oh yeah, God, I've been there too.
- 10:29I know what it's like to have children rebel against me.
- 10:32You are in good company. I've got my 6 year old and my 3
- 10:381/2 year old. And so I know a little bit about
- 10:41rebellion. But here God says they are
- 10:44rebelling against me. He says the ox knows its owner
- 10:47and the donkey its masters feeding through.
- 10:49Even animals know who provides for them, who cares for them,
- 10:54who protects them and loves them, says.
- 10:56But Israel doesn't know. My people do not understand,
- 11:00They don't get that God is the one.
- 11:02Yahweh is the one that is to be worshipped and feared and
- 11:05abandoned. He says, O sinful nation, people
- 11:08weighed down with iniquity, brood of evildoers, depraved
- 11:13children. Here there is a rejection of
- 11:17God's way, his character, His nature by his very people.
- 11:22When he says they've abandoned Yahweh, they've despised the
- 11:25Holy One of Israel, they have turned their backs on him.
- 11:29Can I ask you, do you have a posture that says I love the
- 11:32Lord, I want to obey Him, I want to receive his correction?
- 11:36Or do you say God can't tell me what to do?
- 11:40Verse #5 He continues on. Why do you want more beatings?
- 11:43Why do you keep on rebelling? The whole head is hurt and the
- 11:47whole heart is sick. From the sole of the foot, even
- 11:50to the head. No spot is uninjured wounds,
- 11:53welts and festering sores, not cleansed, bandaged or soothed
- 11:58with oil. Your land is desolate, your
- 12:01city's burned down. Foreigners devour your fields
- 12:04right in front of you. A desolation like a place
- 12:07demolished by foreigners here without his saying, Children of
- 12:12Israel, don't you recognize that the hardships that you're going
- 12:16through right now as a nation are as a result of your
- 12:19wickedness, that you have abandoned me?
- 12:21You have abandoned like my way, my nature, my protection.
- 12:27And so as a result, your land is being invaded and destroyed.
- 12:33Assyria would be one of these nearby nations that would be
- 12:36participating in this. Fast forward a couple decades,
- 12:40Babylon would join in that fray. At other times you would have
- 12:43Edom or you would have even Egypt at sometimes that would
- 12:48come and you know, ravage the land, steal crops, steal riches
- 12:55or people sometimes. And so God says, you don't
- 12:58recognize that all of these hardships that you're
- 13:01encountering are ought to wake you up, that you say, oh, no,
- 13:07I've been going the wrong way. I haven't been following God.
- 13:10I need to come back. Verse #8 He says, daughter, Zion
- 13:15is abandoned like a shelter in a vineyard, like a shack in a
- 13:19cucumber field, like a besieged city.
- 13:22No one is coming to the rescue. No one says, hey, there's the
- 13:26shack in the cucumber field and I'm, I'm really going to spend
- 13:28some good time there. No, no, it, it's left alone.
- 13:31It's isolated. No one's going to it.
- 13:34And he says Zion, Jerusalem is abandoned for summer. 9 He says
- 13:39if Yahweh of heaven's armies had not left us a few survivors, we
- 13:42would be like Sodom. We would resemble Gomorrah that
- 13:46the destruction that Israel was undergoing or the southern
- 13:50Kingdom of Judah, the destruction that Judah was
- 13:53undergoing would have demolished them if God was still, if God
- 13:58was not still protecting them even in their wickedness.
- 14:02What a joy that even to Israel that had left behind God, God
- 14:07was still protecting them. God was still including, as it
- 14:11says here, a few survivors. That there are people that God
- 14:15was actively protecting and caring for, even in judgement.
- 14:20And what a joy that when I drop the ball and when God needs to
- 14:24bring the hammer down on me, that He does not wipe me out
- 14:28entirely. That there is still love for His
- 14:30people. And then in verse #10 this
- 14:33should be a hard word for these people to hear.
- 14:36He says, hear the word of Yahweh, you rulers of Sodom.
- 14:40Now he's talking to Jerusalem. And he says, Jerusalem, you are
- 14:43just as bad as Sodom and Gomorrah that were completely
- 14:47destroyed with fire and brimstone from heaven.
- 14:50And he says, Israel, Judah, Jerusalem, you are just as bad
- 14:55as they were. He says, hear the word of
- 14:57Yahweh, you rulers of Sodom. Listen to the instruction of our
- 14:59God. You people of Gomorrah, what are
- 15:02all your sacrifices to me? Ask Yahweh.
- 15:04I've had enough of burnt offerings and Rams in the fat of
- 15:08well fed cattle. I've no desire for the blood of
- 15:11bulls, lambs or male goats. Now you might say, OK, well I
- 15:15thought God instituted all of these sacrifices and so didn't
- 15:19God want the sacrifices? He only wanted the sacrifices as
- 15:24a result of genuine relationship and love.
- 15:28That it is a the the sacrifices were a picture of a heart
- 15:33devoted to God. The sacrifices meant nothing in
- 15:37and of themselves without an actual living relationship with
- 15:42God, in which people wanted to know God and to exemplify his
- 15:47character, to show it to the nations around Israel.
- 15:51He says When you come to appear before me, who requires this
- 15:55from you, this trampling of my courts.
- 15:58He basically says you are a stampeding herd when you come
- 16:03into the temple and I don't want you there.
- 16:07He says stop bringing useless offerings, your incense is
- 16:11detestable to me. New moons and Sabbaths and the
- 16:15calling of solemn assemblies. I cannot stand iniquity with a
- 16:20festival here. There was not a recognition
- 16:24that, OK, I'm going to come to the temple.
- 16:26I am going to genuinely come before God in contrition with a
- 16:31heart to repent of my sin and to worship God in holiness.
- 16:35They were not operating in that way.
- 16:37And so God says, I don't want your incense.
- 16:39I don't want the festivals, the holidays that I told all Israel
- 16:43to come for. He says if you're going to come
- 16:45with your sin, with your iniquity, holding on to it, not
- 16:49repenting of it, He says I don't want you to just go through the
- 16:52motions. He says I hate your new moons
- 16:55and prescribed festivals. They've become a burden to me.
- 16:58I am tired of putting up with them.
- 17:00When you spread out your hands in prayer, I will refuse to look
- 17:04at you. Even if you offer countless
- 17:06prayers, I will not listen. Your hands are covered with
- 17:11blood here. These people filled with
- 17:15violence, thievery, murder. God says it doesn't matter how
- 17:23often you just show up at you know, I'll use today's phrase it
- 17:27doesn't matter that you're coming to church or that you're
- 17:30going to a small group or that you are feeding the poor.
- 17:33None of that matters if you're using it as a mask or as an
- 17:38excuse for why you are sinning in these ways and refusing to
- 17:45repent of it. God says I want the real thing,
- 17:48I want your heart. So God to heaven and earth and
- 17:51declares I've got a problem with my people Israel, because though
- 17:56I raised them, though I rescued them, though I saved them,
- 17:59though I gave them the law, they are not following me.
- 18:03And instead of acting like my people, they're acting like
- 18:06Sodom and Gomorrah. And so he says, Israel, stop
- 18:10just the religious fervor and traditions and habits.
- 18:14He says, I don't want religious tradition.
- 18:16I want your heart. And for you and I today, that's
- 18:19what God wants. More so than you just reading
- 18:23your Bible to check off a list, more so than you just donating
- 18:27to a church, hoping that it will make God happy with you Despite
- 18:32that sin that you keep holding on to and refusing to let go of.
- 18:36Don't think that just doing religious stuff will make you
- 18:41right before God. What makes us right before God
- 18:44is the perfect righteousness of Christ.
- 18:46And we, if you will, we get that righteousness through repenting
- 18:51of our sin and believing entirely in what Jesus has done.
- 18:56And so I want to encourage you today, don't just go through the
- 18:58motions. Have a heart that genuinely
- 19:00wants to follow God. Next episode we'll pick back up
- 19:05in verse #16 and I'm looking forward to that time together.
- 19:09God bless.
