Transcript
- 0:01Speaker 1: You're listening to Bill Handel On Demand from KFI AM 640.
- 0:04Speaker 1: I know that guy. KFI AM 640. Neil Saavedra and
- 0:16Speaker 1: the Morning Crew here. Handel's out. Just talking with Chris Merrill,
- 0:18Speaker 1: who popped in. Monks and Merrill coming up after the show.
- 0:25Speaker 1: It's all weird today. It's a little mix, but you're
- 0:27Speaker 1: going to get a lot of good stuff here. So
- 0:29Speaker 1: stick around for monks and Merrill coming up after the program,
- 0:32Speaker 1: but I thought they did a fantastic job together, uh,
- 0:36Speaker 1: talking with mayor Bass and, um, getting into, you know,
- 0:41Speaker 1: mayor Bass, she's popping around the station, which is good.
- 0:44Speaker 1: I think she needs it. She needs to be on KFI. Uh,
- 0:47Speaker 1: she needs to be heard as to, you know, what
- 0:51Speaker 1: she's done wrong, what she's done right. And in this
- 0:55Speaker 1: particular case, um, she was on with them and I
- 0:58Speaker 1: thought they did a great job, a job. It actually
- 1:00Speaker 1: reminded me of young John and Kent, you know, the
- 1:05Speaker 1: early days when they would, the way they would do
- 1:08Speaker 1: it together. You know, it's hard when you've got two
- 1:13Speaker 1: people that are passionate doing it together. I thought they
- 1:15Speaker 1: did a phenomenal, phenomenal job.
- 1:18Speaker 2: And you can go back and listen to that interview
- 1:20Speaker 2: anytime on the iHeartRadio app.
- 1:23Speaker 1: Well done. Look at you.
- 1:26Speaker 2: I actually am going to because I missed the interview
- 1:28Speaker 2: and I wanted to listen to it. And then she
- 1:30Speaker 2: was on with Tim Conway Jr.
- 1:31Speaker 3: Too. Yeah.
- 1:32Speaker 1: And right, right when they were going to start, my
- 1:36Speaker 1: son came in and I've been real busy on side
- 1:38Speaker 1: projects and wanted to play some vids. Wanted to play
- 1:43Speaker 1: some Fortnite. So I chose to play Fortnite with my
- 1:47Speaker 1: boy and turn off the radio for a little while.
- 1:50Speaker 2: That's the beauty of the iHeartRadio app, right?
- 1:52Speaker 1: Yes, indeed. I can go back and listen, which I
- 1:54Speaker 1: will do tonight.
- 1:57Speaker 2: If you survive.
- 1:58Speaker 1: Yeah. No, my kid smokes me all the time.
- 2:03Speaker 2: No, I'm not talking about Fortnite. I'm saying if you
- 2:05Speaker 2: survive because we're jumping off a building today.
- 2:07Speaker 1: Oh, yes, that too. Okay, so Amy did a wonderful interview.
- 2:13Speaker 1: Should we play it or should I do something else
- 2:15Speaker 1: here and then play it the next segment?
- 2:17Speaker 2: Let's do that. Let's play it next segment.
- 2:19Speaker 3: Okay.
- 2:20Speaker 1: Um, because, uh, she did an interview with somebody who
- 2:23Speaker 1: has been helped by the union rescue mission. And it really,
- 2:26Speaker 1: I loved it. I thought it was great. So we're
- 2:29Speaker 1: going to play it again.
- 2:30Speaker 2: Yeah. And it's not only helped like she was homeless.
- 2:33Speaker 2: She was giving her kids baths in a library bathroom.
- 2:39Speaker 2: It's she has two kids with her.
- 2:40Speaker 1: So we'll play that coming back. It's pretty, it's pretty
- 2:44Speaker 1: great to hear where she's come, but, uh, Thanks to
- 2:47Speaker 1: Shannon Brooks and Jim Mies, M-I-E-S. Anonymous. Luanne Wheeler. Anonymous.
- 2:57Speaker 1: Ann Thacker. Oh, I like that. Ann Thacker, P-I. Suzanne Schell.
- 3:07Speaker 1: Diana Hurst. Diana Hurst, P-I. Michelle Cube, of course. Michelle Cube, P-I.
- 3:17Speaker 1: Jan Malzynski is what I'm going with. Jen Flores.
- 3:22Speaker 4: PI.
- 3:23Speaker 3: PI.
- 3:23Speaker 1: Kat Wexler. PI. Deborah Stanley. Barbara Ashworth.
- 3:30Speaker 2: Deborah Stanley is listening in Twin Falls, Idaho.
- 3:33Speaker 1: Oh, hiya.
- 3:33Speaker 2: Isn't that fun?
- 3:34Speaker 1: And everybody's very kind, giving love to Amy that they
- 3:37Speaker 1: listen every morning. Neil, have fun going over the edge tomorrow.
- 3:41Speaker 1: We love you. Thank you. I love you right back,
- 3:43Speaker 1: but not in that way that's going to get me,
- 3:45Speaker 1: you know, sanctioned. Thanks, Neil and Amy, for doing this.
- 3:51Speaker 1: Inspire me to donate. Thank you. Don't look down, Shannon.
- 3:55Speaker 1: We will not.
- 3:56Speaker 2: We're getting a lot of those.
- 3:58Speaker 3: Yes.
- 3:58Speaker 2: Don't look down.
- 3:59Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 3:59Speaker 1: Oh, yeah. Last year, I looked, man. It psyched me out.
- 4:04Speaker 1: I don't psych out easy in some ways, and in
- 4:07Speaker 1: other ways, I do. And heights will psych me out.
- 4:11Speaker 1: I did it. You just do it.
- 4:13Speaker 3: But, man.
- 4:15Speaker 2: You guys, so we're sitting there. We're all joking around.
- 4:17Speaker 2: We step over.
- 4:18Speaker 1: Yeah, you actually have to go over a metal bar.
- 4:22Speaker 1: You have to step.
- 4:23Speaker 2: Over the safety rail as you get ready to rappel down.
- 4:26Speaker 2: And everything's fine. He's joking around. And then I looked
- 4:29Speaker 2: at him. His face went, like, he went a little pale.
- 4:33Speaker 2: And you could tell that something had changed drastically from
- 4:36Speaker 2: 30 seconds before.
- 4:37Speaker 1: My body was processing because I looked to the left.
- 4:41Speaker 1: And I saw the freeway and that space, and my
- 4:46Speaker 1: mind went, hey, dummy, it's a long way down.
- 4:51Speaker 2: This is not natural.
- 4:52Speaker 1: Because apparently my inner voice is a voice for a
- 4:56Speaker 1: meat commercial. Mate, it's what's for dinner.
- 5:00Speaker 4: Fox 11 keeps showing the building, and it's so foggy today,
- 5:04Speaker 4: you can't even see the top.
- 5:06Speaker 2: It's going to clear off by the time we get there.
- 5:09Speaker 2: We're going to go over it about noon.
- 5:11Speaker 1: We'll see.
- 5:11Speaker 4: I guess you will be able to see it.
- 5:13Speaker 1: But for those who want to donate, please do. Our
- 5:18Speaker 1: goal is 30,000, and that is part of the 1.9
- 5:22Speaker 1: million they're trying to raise with just this event. Our
- 5:26Speaker 1: portion is 30, and we're at 21933. And I'd love
- 5:30Speaker 1: to hit that 30 if you find it in your
- 5:32Speaker 1: heart or that you have some money that you've been
- 5:36Speaker 1: wanting to put towards something like this. Just go to URM.org.
- 5:42Speaker 1: That's Union Rescue Mission, URM.org slash O-T-E for Over the Edge.
- 5:48Speaker 1: You'll see the KFI, Team KFI. Click on that. You
- 5:50Speaker 1: can give to Amy. You can give to me. It
- 5:52Speaker 1: doesn't matter. It still goes to the same place. And
- 5:54Speaker 1: we love you and appreciate you for it. You are
- 5:56Speaker 1: incredibly generous. And we're thankful for you to be able
- 6:01Speaker 1: to reach this goal so that, you know, almost dying
- 6:05Speaker 1: is worthwhile. Amy King has a great interview that talks
- 6:10Speaker 1: about someone who has been helped by From the Union
- 6:13Speaker 1: Rescue Mission. Oh, Amy.
- 6:15Speaker 2: Yeah, let's say good morning to a former guest at
- 6:18Speaker 2: the Union Rescue Mission who is now a staff member
- 6:22Speaker 2: and is living in Hope Gardens, which is a safe haven.
- 6:25Speaker 2: and Home for Women and Children, one of the great
- 6:27Speaker 2: programs at Union Rescue Mission. Good morning, Irene.
- 6:30Speaker 3: Good morning.
- 6:31Speaker 2: Thanks so much for joining us today. So, Irene, we
- 6:34Speaker 2: wanted to have you on because I wanted to share
- 6:36Speaker 2: with our Wake Up Call listeners a success story to
- 6:39Speaker 2: let them know what their donations are being used for.
- 6:43Speaker 2: And you are one of those success stories. So please
- 6:46Speaker 2: tell us what first brought you to the Union Rescue Mission,
- 6:51Speaker 2: because at first you were a guest.
- 6:53Speaker 1: Yes.
- 6:54Speaker 3: So back in 2022, I was running from domestic violence
- 6:58Speaker 3: and battling a severe alcohol and drug addiction. I was
- 7:03Speaker 3: running from hotel to hotel, shelter to shelter with two
- 7:07Speaker 3: of my three children. I have Raiden and he's six
- 7:11Speaker 3: and Christy, she's 12. I was running out of options
- 7:16Speaker 3: and eventually found myself like literally on the street. So
- 7:20Speaker 3: I remember at that time, like I had nowhere else
- 7:22Speaker 3: to go and went to a county library out in
- 7:24Speaker 3: Los Angeles. And the librarian called the Los Angeles Police Department.
- 7:29Speaker 3: And it was because of them that I found myself
- 7:31Speaker 3: at Union Rescue Mission. I basically had hit my rock bottom.
- 7:35Speaker 3: And so that's where my journey began.
- 7:38Speaker 2: So Irene, you said, so you were at the library
- 7:40Speaker 2: and you were just, like you said, you were out
- 7:42Speaker 2: of options. And so the library said, we can find
- 7:45Speaker 2: a place to help you, but we need to call
- 7:47Speaker 2: the police and they'll take you there. Or how did
- 7:49Speaker 2: that play out?
- 7:50Speaker 3: Yeah, that's, Yeah, well, I thought I was in trouble.
- 7:53Speaker 3: I really, because I was in the library, I would
- 7:55Speaker 3: go there and bathe my kids there. And so one
- 7:58Speaker 3: of the librarians, she knew. She just waited for me
- 8:00Speaker 3: to let her know that I needed help. So it
- 8:03Speaker 3: wasn't that she was trying to get me in trouble.
- 8:04Speaker 3: She just, she knew that was the option was to
- 8:07Speaker 3: call them and they would get me where I needed
- 8:09Speaker 3: to go.
- 8:09Speaker 4: Okay.
- 8:10Speaker 2: And then were you in the relationship and you escaped
- 8:13Speaker 2: from the domestic violence situation? Is that what got you
- 8:16Speaker 2: out of a house in the first place?
- 8:17Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 8:18Speaker 3: So that started, I mean, running from domestic violence started
- 8:21Speaker 3: back in 2018. So since 2018, I've been to several
- 8:26Speaker 3: different shelters from Long Beach to Antelope Valley, just trying
- 8:30Speaker 3: to get out of the area, my unsafe area. So
- 8:34Speaker 3: I just spent the rest of my, that entire time
- 8:36Speaker 3: just running around to escape that.
- 8:39Speaker 2: You know, I think it's interesting because when you hear
- 8:40Speaker 2: about domestic violence situations, and I mean, I've always been
- 8:44Speaker 2: of the opinion, well, then just leave. But, you know,
- 8:48Speaker 2: it's a lot more complicated than that. You've got children,
- 8:50Speaker 2: you've got bills, you've got to take care of them.
- 8:53Speaker 2: And where do you go? And is there a safe
- 8:55Speaker 2: place for you? And I'm... Did that all weigh into
- 8:59Speaker 2: your decision?
- 9:00Speaker 3: Yeah, I guess I would try from time to time
- 9:03Speaker 3: to stay at families, but I started to not feel comfortable.
- 9:06Speaker 3: I couldn't trust anybody. So I was never feeling safe.
- 9:10Speaker 3: You know, even though people would say, oh, no, you're
- 9:11Speaker 3: safe here. The fear was still there. I'm still overcoming
- 9:16Speaker 3: that right now. Thank God I am in a safe place.
- 9:19Speaker 3: But I still hold on to the trauma of thinking, oh,
- 9:22Speaker 3: will they find me?
- 9:23Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 9:24Speaker 3: Or, you know, am I OK here?
- 9:26Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 9:26Speaker 2: OK, so tell me about what it's like at the
- 9:29Speaker 2: Union Rescue Mission, because you've been there now. You've become
- 9:33Speaker 2: a staff member now. But what's the feeling when you
- 9:36Speaker 2: finally get into a place that is safe?
- 9:39Speaker 3: That was my main thing here. Well, I went to
- 9:41Speaker 3: Union Rescue Mission. And from there, one of the staff
- 9:44Speaker 3: members told me about an opportunity to go up to
- 9:47Speaker 3: Hope Gardens, which is where I do currently reside. And honestly,
- 9:52Speaker 3: I didn't know anything about this place. At that point,
- 9:54Speaker 3: I was just looking for a bed. I didn't need
- 9:56Speaker 3: anything fancy, just a bed. I needed somewhere safe, most importantly.
- 10:00Speaker 3: for me and my children. So I came up here
- 10:03Speaker 3: to Hope Gardens in November of 2022. And I didn't
- 10:06Speaker 3: realize at the time, but God was bringing me somewhere
- 10:09Speaker 3: that would change my life and my well-being and future
- 10:12Speaker 3: was starting here.
- 10:12Speaker 4: Okay.
- 10:13Speaker 2: How did it change your life? What did it do
- 10:15Speaker 2: for you?
- 10:15Speaker 3: So I didn't know that I needed classes. I knew
- 10:18Speaker 3: that I had a problem. I just didn't know how
- 10:20Speaker 3: I was going to get out of it.
- 10:21Speaker 1: So I got the.
- 10:22Speaker 3: Opportunity here to start programming, and that was a requirement here.
- 10:26Speaker 3: Like you had to program, go through classes, trauma-informed therapy.
- 10:30Speaker 3: I had to commit to counseling for myself, for my children.
- 10:35Speaker 3: And honestly, at that time, either I was going to
- 10:38Speaker 3: do it or I was going to lose my kids.
- 10:40Speaker 3: I had DCSS involved, and I was fighting to keep them.
- 10:43Speaker 3: So whatever it took, I was just down to do it.
- 10:46Speaker 3: But this definitely is what ultimately changed my life.
- 10:50Speaker 2: So they do more than just give you a meal
- 10:52Speaker 2: and a place to stay. They actually help you figure
- 10:55Speaker 2: things out, get off the street, get the help that
- 10:57Speaker 2: you need to get back into your life.
- 11:00Speaker 3: Oh, yeah, definitely. They help me understand myself, the relationships
- 11:05Speaker 3: I was forming, the choices I was making and the
- 11:07Speaker 3: kind of person like I was becoming. So I didn't
- 11:11Speaker 3: know any of those things. In fact, you couldn't tell
- 11:13Speaker 3: me that before, but they helped me to see that.
- 11:16Speaker 2: So you were resistant to hearing that?
- 11:18Speaker 3: Yeah, because to me, it wasn't a problem, you know,
- 11:22Speaker 3: but I ultimately stopped the blame game where I was
- 11:26Speaker 3: blaming my abuser. I was blaming everybody but myself and
- 11:30Speaker 3: I started realizing it was me choosing these people. So
- 11:34Speaker 3: I was changing those things within me.
- 11:36Speaker 2: That's so cool. And then you mentioned you're living at
- 11:38Speaker 2: Hope Gardens. For people who don't know, it's part of
- 11:41Speaker 2: Union Rescue Mission, but what is Hope Gardens?
- 11:44Speaker 3: Hope Gardens is a safe haven for women with children.
- 11:47Speaker 3: We also have singles and seniors who are here where
- 11:51Speaker 3: we have the opportunity to pause and rebuild and reflect
- 11:55Speaker 3: and share. We're supplied, like I mentioned earlier, with the
- 11:58Speaker 3: resources to help us to move on out to stability
- 12:01Speaker 3: and permanent housing later so that we can we don't
- 12:04Speaker 3: have to revisit this situation again.
- 12:06Speaker 2: That's so great. OK, so for people, Irene, who are
- 12:09Speaker 2: thinking about donating because we're going over the edge on Friday,
- 12:12Speaker 2: but they're still on the fence about it. What can
- 12:14Speaker 2: you say about Union Rescue Mission that's going to help
- 12:16Speaker 2: them turn thinking about it into doing it and making
- 12:19Speaker 2: a donation?
- 12:20Speaker 3: Oh, you know what? People like me. I mean, we
- 12:23Speaker 3: rely on people like you and your generous donations do
- 12:26Speaker 3: not go unused in a great way. Like you're changing lives.
- 12:32Speaker 3: You're making a difference for children, for women, for men.
- 12:35Speaker 3: You're changing lives entirely.
- 12:37Speaker 2: And there you go.
- 12:40Speaker 1: Wow.
- 12:41Speaker 2: Irene's story. It's a good one.
- 12:42Speaker 1: Very powerful.
- 12:43Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 12:44Speaker 1: Thanks for letting us play that again. I just thought
- 12:47Speaker 1: she was a great way of summing up what we're
- 12:50Speaker 1: doing and why we're doing it and that we believe
- 12:52Speaker 1: in the Union Rescue Mission. Yeah. All right. Bill Handel
- 12:56Speaker 1: is on vacation for the next couple of weeks, and
- 12:59Speaker 1: we're going to have a good time in his stead.
- 13:03Speaker 1: So go nowhere. I'm going to interview some of the
- 13:05Speaker 1: crew coming up in the next segment because Handel always
- 13:08Speaker 1: hogs it.
- 13:10Speaker 2: Me, me, me, me, me, me, me.
- 13:13Speaker 1: But we'll find a little bit about the people that
- 13:16Speaker 1: were here. How about that? All right, food trends going on.
- 13:19Speaker 1: This is one that I thought was interesting because, and
- 13:24Speaker 1: I'll explain, the story about carnation. You know carnation and
- 13:29Speaker 1: their evaporated milk. Well, one of the things that you
- 13:33Speaker 1: can make is a type of caramel or a dulce
- 13:37Speaker 1: de leche.
- 13:37Speaker 4: Okay.
- 13:38Speaker 1: With it. I don't recommend this necessarily, but the old
- 13:42Speaker 1: school way is to make it in the actual can
- 13:44Speaker 1: and to heat it up. And again, it could be
- 13:48Speaker 1: dangerous depending on how you're making it, so I'm not
- 13:50Speaker 1: recommending anything. But you would heat it up and let
- 13:53Speaker 1: it caramelize. Well, for fall, of course, we're all thinking
- 13:58Speaker 1: about baking. I know it's still warm, but we have
- 14:00Speaker 1: had a couple of the, you know, hazy days. This
- 14:02Speaker 1: morning was one of them. And so you start thinking
- 14:05Speaker 1: about baking and getting into all of that. And Nestle
- 14:08Speaker 1: is releasing an all-new product for fall baking. And it
- 14:12Speaker 1: is a carnation evaporated milk that is a caramel flavor already.
- 14:19Speaker 1: So for pies and things like that that you're making,
- 14:22Speaker 1: fillings and the like. But to me, I'm like, well,
- 14:25Speaker 1: just take it, evaporated milk, and make it into a
- 14:29Speaker 1: dulce de leche.
- 14:30Speaker 4: Okay.
- 14:31Speaker 1: And then you're good to go because it has all
- 14:33Speaker 1: those wonderful notes in it as well. But there, I
- 14:37Speaker 1: don't know, skipping a step. The only thing to me,
- 14:41Speaker 1: whenever you start getting into flavors, flavoring something, it makes
- 14:48Speaker 1: me a little nervous that it's going to be a
- 14:49Speaker 1: little synthetic. So vanilla, there's vanilla extract. There is also
- 14:56Speaker 1: artificial vanilla. Anybody want to guess what animal produced the
- 15:02Speaker 1: flavoring for vanilla and what part of their body it
- 15:06Speaker 1: came out of? Anyone?
- 15:08Speaker 2: It's not from a plant?
- 15:10Speaker 1: No. There is actually an animal that gives off a
- 15:14Speaker 1: secretion of sorts that actually has a similar flavor.
- 15:20Speaker 4: You turned me off of vanilla the minute you said secretion.
- 15:25Speaker 1: Well, new Clay.
- 15:26Speaker 2: There's a bean.
- 15:28Speaker 1: Yes, there, what'd you call me? There is, there actually, yes,
- 15:32Speaker 1: a vanilla bean. Don't do that. Don't do that. Not here.
- 15:37Speaker 1: Not now. It's, it's beaver bum. The little backside of
- 15:45Speaker 1: the beaver, there's a secretion there. And there is, and
- 15:50Speaker 1: they would use it in perfume. I think it's something else.
- 15:53Speaker 1: I don't know if it was ever used in food.
- 15:55Speaker 1: But you know where– there's a lot of stuff when
- 16:00Speaker 1: you do deep dives on food all the time. You
- 16:03Speaker 1: do get into some rough waters and you find out
- 16:06Speaker 1: some of the coloring. Who figured that out? Who figured
- 16:10Speaker 1: that out? There's a lot of red coloring that comes
- 16:12Speaker 1: from bugs and– Things like that.
- 16:14Speaker 2: I know, but who went and stuck their nose on
- 16:16Speaker 2: a beaver and went, hey, it smells like vanilla.
- 16:19Speaker 1: Funny you should ask. He's now awaiting trial. He lived
- 16:24Speaker 1: here in Burbank. They call him the butt sniffer. The
- 16:28Speaker 1: Burbank butt sniffer. I don't know, but it's a lot
- 16:32Speaker 1: of things. Like, you ever think, like, smoking to me
- 16:35Speaker 1: is the dumbest thing in the world. Now, I used
- 16:36Speaker 1: to smoke cigars. I don't anymore. But the... Who said, hey... Listen,
- 16:45Speaker 1: we're going to take these old leaves. We're going to
- 16:47Speaker 1: wrap them in paper. We're going to light them on fire.
- 16:50Speaker 1: We're going to inhale the smoke. And someone went, that's
- 16:54Speaker 1: freaking brilliant. That's smart.
- 16:56Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 16:57Speaker 1: So Native Americans, but at least theirs, they had a little,
- 17:01Speaker 1: they had stuff in it that had a buzz. It's
- 17:06Speaker 1: not just the peace pipe. It's the, you know, the
- 17:08Speaker 1: whole thing. Your cigarettes, as far as I know, I've
- 17:12Speaker 1: never smoked a whole cigarette. Oh, and somebody called me
- 17:16Speaker 1: out and said it wasn't very Christian to talk about
- 17:19Speaker 1: the charities. I'm like, and then Kono came in and
- 17:23Speaker 1: busted my chops. That's not how I meant it. I'm
- 17:26Speaker 1: not a rich man. I'm not giving tons of money.
- 17:28Speaker 1: So to me, it's a very humble way to divide
- 17:34Speaker 1: up some monies. Don't look at me like that. Because
- 17:38Speaker 1: now Ann is smiling and nodding. I wasn't saying how
- 17:42Speaker 1: much goes someplace, but Am I digging?
- 17:46Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 17:46Speaker 1: Making it worse? A little bit?
- 17:50Speaker 6: How do we start a beaver bong?
- 17:52Speaker 1: I don't know. I'm all over the place right now.
- 17:55Speaker 1: That's part of the fun.
- 17:56Speaker 2: That's because he's all freaked out because he's about to
- 17:58Speaker 2: jump off a building.
- 17:59Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 18:01Speaker 1: Then I'm going to be at a food event tomorrow.
- 18:02Speaker 1: My life is all turned upside down right now.
- 18:05Speaker 2: Oh, is that Manhattan Beach? Is that tomorrow?
- 18:07Speaker 1: Yes, it is.
- 18:08Speaker 2: The Food and Wine Festival? That's a good one.
- 18:10Speaker 1: It's a fantastic one. It's going to be great. I'm
- 18:13Speaker 1: looking forward to it, as a matter of fact. But
- 18:17Speaker 1: before then, I'm going over the edge. URM.org slash O-T-E
- 18:24Speaker 1: for Over the Edge. Any donation would be much appreciated.
- 18:27Speaker 1: Look for the KFI team button. Click on that and
- 18:31Speaker 1: donate away. Bill's out on vacation. He is with his
- 18:35Speaker 1: lovely bride. They are at Safari, like the real thing.
- 18:42Speaker 1: They're going like the real place, not like San Diego
- 18:45Speaker 1: and that type of thing, which is great, by the way.
- 18:47Speaker 1: I'm just saying that that's not what they're doing. And
- 18:50Speaker 1: he'll be back in a couple of weeks. So you've
- 18:51Speaker 1: got the morning crew. And I thought, you know what?
- 18:53Speaker 1: We don't handle, God bless him, most insecure human being
- 18:58Speaker 1: on the planet. I can say that because we're buddies.
- 19:02Speaker 1: And he, when we would do ask, handle anything and
- 19:05Speaker 1: all that, you know, I would kind of take out
- 19:07Speaker 1: anything about us because he gets bored when it's not
- 19:11Speaker 1: about us. That's the honest to God truth. So I
- 19:14Speaker 1: thought we'd ask, I'd ask a couple of questions to
- 19:16Speaker 1: the crew here this morning, get to know them. After
- 19:20Speaker 1: I remind you that you can donate if you feel
- 19:24Speaker 1: moved to. Amy King and I would be forever in
- 19:28Speaker 1: your debt. We're at $ 24, 237 raised out of 30. That
- 19:34Speaker 1: is fantastic. Freaking fantastic. And if we can hit 30,
- 19:37Speaker 1: we'll be thrilled if you help us get there. Mark Strickland,
- 19:42Speaker 1: thank you. Another anonymous, another anonymous, another anonymous.
- 19:46Speaker 4: Lots of anonymous. Yeah.
- 19:47Speaker 2: And we appreciate, even though we can't give you a
- 19:49Speaker 2: shout out.
- 19:49Speaker 3: Thank you. you.
- 19:50Speaker 1: Yeah, we really do. Thank you, Neil and Amy, for
- 19:54Speaker 1: supporting the incredible Union Rescue Mission, which shares hope and
- 19:57Speaker 1: blessings with so many people. KL, thank you. Carol Hoffman,
- 20:00Speaker 1: thank you. Holy smokes. That's a lot of money. Thank
- 20:03Speaker 1: you so much. Happy to help. With this well-run charity.
- 20:09Speaker 2: And it is a well-run charity. 87 cents of every
- 20:12Speaker 2: dollar goes to the programs that actually help people get
- 20:16Speaker 2: off the street and get back into their life, which
- 20:19Speaker 2: is a great track record.
- 20:22Speaker 1: Julie Bassey, Mary Ann Martineau, Connie Otis. Thank you, thank you,
- 20:28Speaker 1: thank you, all of you. Margaret Van Kerchecoven. P.I. Scott Brown.
- 20:38Speaker 4: Shit, dork.
- 20:39Speaker 1: Sherry O'Glesby. Marty Anderson. Patrick Henry Ngala or Ngaya. Barbara Ashworth. P.I. Actually,
- 20:52Speaker 1: that sounds rich. Hello, darling. I'm Barbara Ashworth of the
- 20:56Speaker 1: Santa Barbara Ashworths. And then Kat Wexler we got. Okay.
- 21:00Speaker 1: Thank you all. You can donate at urm.org slash O-T-E
- 21:07Speaker 1: for Over the Edge. Look for the KFI banner team.
- 21:10Speaker 1: Click that and donate. Would be great.
- 21:14Speaker 4: All right.
- 21:14Speaker 1: Amy King, how'd you get in radio?
- 21:17Speaker 2: Oh, well, it's too long of a story, but it's
- 21:20Speaker 2: due to the show Mork and Mindy.
- 21:23Speaker 1: Really?
- 21:23Speaker 3: Yes.
- 21:25Speaker 1: Remember?
- 21:26Speaker 6: Okay.
- 21:26Speaker 2: So it was the show a long time ago. And
- 21:27Speaker 2: remember the guy? Who played Orson.
- 21:30Speaker 1: No, not Robin Williams.
- 21:31Speaker 3: Orson.
- 21:32Speaker 2: At the end of each episode, he'd go, well, Mark,
- 21:34Speaker 2: what did you learn this week? Well, he was a
- 21:37Speaker 2: voice actor. His name is Ralph James. And I got
- 21:39Speaker 2: to meet him while I was doing an internship at
- 21:41Speaker 2: an advertising agency while I was trying to figure out
- 21:43Speaker 2: what I was going to do when I got out
- 21:44Speaker 2: of college. And we put together a demo tape. And
- 21:47Speaker 2: I didn't want to be a DJ. And I didn't
- 21:50Speaker 2: want to work in the production thing. And so I went,
- 21:54Speaker 2: I think I need to go to a radio station
- 21:56Speaker 2: and work in radio. And- They just happened to be
- 21:58Speaker 2: looking for somebody in the news department. They just happened
- 22:01Speaker 2: to have a news director who could train me. And
- 22:04Speaker 2: that was my first job was in Medford, Oregon.
- 22:06Speaker 1: That's awesome. Did you study for advertising?
- 22:09Speaker 2: I have a degree in speech communications, a Bachelor of
- 22:13Speaker 2: Science from Oregon State University.
- 22:14Speaker 3: So, no.
- 22:15Speaker 1: For talking and junk.
- 22:18Speaker 2: I guess.
- 22:18Speaker 4: Yes.
- 22:19Speaker 1: Annie, Fofanny, what about you? How'd you get in radio?
- 22:22Speaker 1: You were at K-Rock, right?
- 22:24Speaker 5: Yes, yes, yes, yes. I started off as an intern there.
- 22:26Speaker 1: Yeah, you did.
- 22:28Speaker 6: I was at a JC, a junior college. Taking broadcasting classes.
- 22:33Speaker 6: You got extra credits for an internship.
- 22:36Speaker 5: Went over there.
- 22:36Speaker 1: And they didn't interview over the phone. You came in
- 22:39Speaker 1: all your blonde hair. Sure did.
- 22:42Speaker 5: And then started working on a show called Loveline. That
- 22:45Speaker 5: was once a week.
- 22:46Speaker 3: Oh, yeah.
- 22:46Speaker 5: On Sunday nights.
- 22:47Speaker 1: I remember.
- 22:48Speaker 5: And ended up producing it.
- 22:49Speaker 1: So from the beginning.
- 22:51Speaker 5: From pretty much the beginning.
- 22:53Speaker 3: Wow.
- 22:54Speaker 6: Well, no, not actually. When it was Sunday nights for
- 22:56Speaker 6: a while, for a few years. It started before I
- 22:58Speaker 6: even started high school.
- 23:01Speaker 1: Wow. Didn't it go every night?
- 23:03Speaker 5: It's when it went syndicated, it went five nights a week.
- 23:06Speaker 3: Wow.
- 23:06Speaker 1: I remember that show. Very, very well. Through all of them.
- 23:10Speaker 1: Everybody who hosted it.
- 23:11Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 23:12Speaker 1: So you know all of them. Psycho Mike and all
- 23:14Speaker 1: the crazies.
- 23:14Speaker 5: I know them all.
- 23:15Speaker 3: Adam.
- 23:15Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 23:15Speaker 2: Adam a nice guy.
- 23:17Speaker 1: Brackman, poor man. I don't know Adam very well. I've
- 23:20Speaker 1: met him a couple times.
- 23:21Speaker 2: He's a great guy.
- 23:22Speaker 5: He's a great guy.
- 23:23Speaker 3: Oh, okay.
- 23:24Speaker 1: I was trying to read your face.
- 23:28Speaker 5: Best times, yeah. Stayed there till the end and then
- 23:31Speaker 5: came over here.
- 23:32Speaker 1: Was he a real conservative guy back then?
- 23:35Speaker 5: No, no, he wasn't. Not as much as he is now, no.
- 23:41Speaker 1: And Jimmy Kimmel was over there back then too.
- 23:43Speaker 5: Yeah, funny story.
- 23:46Speaker 6: Jimmy and I actually shared a desk and a computer
- 23:48Speaker 6: because he was on the morning show and I was
- 23:50Speaker 6: at Loveline. So he was in the morning and I
- 23:52Speaker 6: was at night. So we shared passwords and everything.
- 23:56Speaker 1: So he'd come in and use the same stuff. He
- 23:59Speaker 1: seems like a nice enough guy.
- 24:00Speaker 2: Very nice.
- 24:01Speaker 5: Great guy.
- 24:02Speaker 1: I think he's an incredibly talented guy, too.
- 24:04Speaker 3: Oh, yeah.
- 24:04Speaker 1: I've seen him emcee some charity events and stuff. Like, oh,
- 24:07Speaker 1: there's me talking about my charity events.
- 24:10Speaker 2: Hello?
- 24:11Speaker 1: Yeah, no, awesome. Good times. That's very cool. I love
- 24:15Speaker 1: radio so much.
- 24:17Speaker 3: Me, too.
- 24:17Speaker 1: It's just so different than everything else.
- 24:19Speaker 5: Mm-hmm.
- 24:20Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 24:21Speaker 1: And so it just, you know, I don't know. And
- 24:24Speaker 1: then next week we'll talk to– I see the time.
- 24:28Speaker 1: Next week we'll talk a little bit to Kono. You
- 24:30Speaker 1: have any announcement or anything? You want to announce anything?
- 24:32Speaker 3: No.
- 24:33Speaker 5: No?
- 24:34Speaker 1: You're not going anywhere.
- 24:35Speaker 6: Or– no? No.
- 24:38Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 24:38Speaker 1: I hope so.
- 24:39Speaker 5: Having my baby.
- 24:41Speaker 1: Wow, Kono. He ran out of time for you and me.
- 24:43Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 24:43Speaker 1: Well, no. Listen. I think we still have two more
- 24:47Speaker 1: Fridays before the old man comes back. We'll be fine. Okay?
- 24:51Speaker 3: That's right.
- 24:51Speaker 2: You're going to be here for a while, aren't you?
- 24:53Speaker 1: Yeah. You got a different senior citizen behind the mic now.
- 24:57Speaker 1: All righty. That's funny to you, Kono? You can make
- 25:02Speaker 1: fun of my age. I don't care. I like seasoned citizens.
- 25:06Speaker 1: They're smart. All right, stick around. You've got Monks and
- 25:11Speaker 1: Merrill coming up. Not Gary and Shannon. It's going to
- 25:16Speaker 1: be a different setup, but stick around for the boys,
- 25:18Speaker 1: won't you, up in moments from now. Thank you for
- 25:21Speaker 1: all your generosity. Pray for us at noon when we
- 25:24Speaker 1: go over the edge. URM.org slash O-T-E if you want
- 25:30Speaker 1: to donate, or you can go to my Instagram at
- 25:34Speaker 1: Fork Reporter, and link is in my bio. Thanks to
- 25:38Speaker 1: everybody on the show and, of course, for the new
- 25:42Speaker 1: Clay helping out on the board.
- 25:44Speaker 4: Mwah.
- 25:45Speaker 6: Yeah. Ugh.
- 25:46Speaker 1: Jeez, that was like in my ear. That's a wet one.
- 25:48Speaker 3: Wet.
- 25:49Speaker 1: All right. Catch you on the flip side. This is
