Latest / The Craig Way Show / Rodney Terry previews Legends Classic
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: I'll tell you who's focused on Syracuse. That's Rodney Terry,
- 0:02Speaker 1: the Long Warn men's basketball course. This is from his
- 0:05Speaker 1: media zoom earlier today, in fact, just a little while ago,
- 0:09Speaker 1: a couple of hours ago. So let's hear some of
- 0:12Speaker 1: coach Rodney Terry talking about getting ready to take his
- 0:15Speaker 1: team to New York to play at the Barkley Center
- 0:17Speaker 1: in Brooklyn in the Legends Classic, to play Syracuse Thursday
- 0:21Speaker 1: unit at six, and then either a Texas Tech or
- 0:23Speaker 1: Saint Joe's on Friday.
- 0:25Speaker 2: Coach, good afternoon. I don't know if you if you
- 0:28Speaker 2: if you call this stretch of games fun coming up,
- 0:30Speaker 2: but it's fun for us and fun for the fans. Look, Syracuse,
- 0:35Speaker 2: NC State, you know, Yukon in a couple of weeks,
- 0:38Speaker 2: What do you learn about playing these these teams? Kind
- 0:41Speaker 2: of with that, you know, championship DNA, especially Yukon here
- 0:45Speaker 2: in a couple of weeks and they literally are the champs.
- 0:47Speaker 2: What do you learn from playing those guys?
- 0:50Speaker 3: Well? I think for us again, I mean we've always
- 0:53Speaker 3: taken the one game at a time approach. Obviously, we
- 0:56Speaker 3: got a will coached Syracuse team that we have a
- 0:58Speaker 3: lot of respect for. Uh, that we get a chance
- 1:01Speaker 3: to face in our next contest. But I think when
- 1:04Speaker 3: you put a putting together a schedule tumers overall, I
- 1:08Speaker 3: think you're trying to put together one that you know
- 1:11Speaker 3: lends itself an opportunity for you to get a chance
- 1:14Speaker 3: to competing against a number of different style of plays
- 1:16Speaker 3: to prepare you for conference play. They Chris argued and
- 1:21Speaker 3: Matts and Bolt did a great job of constructing our schedule.
- 1:26Speaker 3: I think that that really uh simplifies that that uh,
- 1:31Speaker 3: that format there. I mean, we have a lot of
- 1:33Speaker 3: different teams that we're playing in the non conference that
- 1:37Speaker 3: that play different styles of play that that are very
- 1:40Speaker 3: relevant to the title of play that we'll will have
- 1:42Speaker 3: to go up against an SEC play. Uh. And so
- 1:46Speaker 3: you know, with that being said, I think you know
- 1:48Speaker 3: that's that's how you used to go about trying to
- 1:50Speaker 3: put together really a really good schedule, you know. And
- 1:53Speaker 3: uh uh I know for us, we're excited about competing
- 1:56Speaker 3: in the Legends Classic. We we've been on slate to
- 2:00Speaker 3: play in that over the last three years that we
- 2:02Speaker 3: got here. You pushed it back a couple of years,
- 2:04Speaker 3: but we love going to the East Coast, having an
- 2:06Speaker 3: opportunity to play the different part of the country, the
- 2:10Speaker 3: different part of the country, get a chance to see
- 2:12Speaker 3: our guys and our team up close in person as
- 2:16Speaker 3: always great, So we'll be excited about this contest again.
- 2:19Speaker 3: A very well coached and a really good team in Syracuse.
- 2:26Speaker 4: Athlete Rtie forgiving for going back towards out's house with
- 2:29Speaker 4: football over the weekend. So I didn't get a chance
- 2:31Speaker 4: to catch your game at versus MSIPEP Valley State, but
- 2:34Speaker 4: I didn't want to ask you whether it's the Mississippi
- 2:37Speaker 4: Valley State or Chicago State or Houston Christian Artie, how
- 2:40Speaker 4: do you kind of assess the value of those games
- 2:43Speaker 4: and what you're seeing from your team in those games
- 2:46Speaker 4: compared to what you may see in practice considering you know,
- 2:49Speaker 4: no disrespect to those programs, but the players and actions
- 2:53Speaker 4: are getting in practice are better players than what they'd
- 2:55Speaker 4: face against some of those programs.
- 2:58Speaker 3: You know, Eric, great question. I think this day in time,
- 3:03Speaker 3: we respect all of our opponents. I mean, there's a
- 3:05Speaker 3: lot of parody in college basketball. There's no such thing
- 3:09Speaker 3: as young teams anymore. So you know, major teams they
- 3:13Speaker 3: have older players as well that have played at power fives,
- 3:17Speaker 3: So there's no intimidation factor with them coming in playing
- 3:19Speaker 3: in a power fire situation, and if your team's not
- 3:23Speaker 3: ready to play on that given night, you may come
- 3:26Speaker 3: up on the wrong end of that, you know. So
- 3:27Speaker 3: with that being said, I think every night you got
- 3:30Speaker 3: to bring your a game. You gotta come play at
- 3:33Speaker 3: an incredible level. I know, for us in November, it's
- 3:36Speaker 3: about identity. We're trying to establish an identity of work.
- 3:40Speaker 3: We're consistent every night. We know we can sit down
- 3:43Speaker 3: and guard really hard, try to have a really good
- 3:45Speaker 3: defense of effort with energy and activity, you know, try
- 3:50Speaker 3: to play fast on offense, you know, trying to get
- 3:53Speaker 3: up the floor as well, and have an identity if
- 3:56Speaker 3: from an office standpoint as well, try to play inside out.
- 4:00Speaker 3: But early on, you know, not just to us, I think,
- 4:03Speaker 3: you know, for a better part of a lot of
- 4:04Speaker 3: teams in the country. There's not a lot of continuity
- 4:07Speaker 3: in college basketball anymore. So you know, you're constantly, you know,
- 4:12Speaker 3: bringing in you guys that you're having to mess with.
- 4:15Speaker 3: Maybe you know a few guys that you had to
- 4:17Speaker 3: you know that you were able to retain in your program.
- 4:20Speaker 3: So every minute that you play in non conference is
- 4:23Speaker 3: very valuable chemistry, Guys getting more and more familiar with
- 4:28Speaker 3: the way you want to play scheme wise, defensively, officily,
- 4:32Speaker 3: So there's never a minute you can just take off anymore.
- 4:35Speaker 3: You could be up, you know, and it's eight minutes
- 4:37Speaker 3: to go, and you still need your guys out there
- 4:40Speaker 3: on the floor because they still got to get used
- 4:42Speaker 3: to playing with each other in game situations. We can
- 4:44Speaker 3: practice all day down here, it's not the same in
- 4:47Speaker 3: the game situation in front of a crowd, and so
- 4:51Speaker 3: in game situations, so this day and time, it's a
- 4:54Speaker 3: premium on chemistry. Guys can famil with each other, playing
- 4:58Speaker 3: different combinations, trying to figure out your team. Uh So
- 5:02Speaker 3: you're working through all of that in non conference slates.
- 5:05Speaker 3: So hopefully when you get the conference play, you know
- 5:08Speaker 3: you've established a rotation, You kind of established some guys
- 5:11Speaker 3: that that that are ready to go and can play
- 5:14Speaker 3: the way you want to play on both ends of
- 5:15Speaker 3: the floor. So that's still kind of the way we
- 5:18Speaker 3: approach it every game we play at the NCAA tournament
- 5:21Speaker 3: game o case. So it really doesn't matter who you play,
- 5:24Speaker 3: and we don't ever get too high. We don't ever
- 5:26Speaker 3: get too low the next game of the big Game,
- 5:29Speaker 3: because it's the next game for us on our schedule.
- 5:32Speaker 5: Coach as usual, thank you for spending some time with us.
- 5:35Speaker 5: So going to New York, Brooklyn, New York at the
- 5:38Speaker 5: Barclays and a lot of history, a lot of culture there.
- 5:41Speaker 5: What do you have on slate for the players maybe
- 5:44Speaker 5: before and after the game? And do you expect a
- 5:46Speaker 5: lot of NBA scouts to be at that game? Of
- 5:49Speaker 5: those games?
- 5:50Speaker 3: Erry good, you know, Terry, good to see you. Thank you,
- 5:53Speaker 3: good question. You know what I think I think for us,
- 5:58Speaker 3: You know, we're not getting there early as as we
- 6:00Speaker 3: have kind of in the past, Uh, when we were
- 6:03Speaker 3: able to get there and do something with the guys.
- 6:05Speaker 3: You know, we're not in the city. Actually we've got it.
- 6:07Speaker 3: You know, it's still a little trick to get into
- 6:10Speaker 3: the city being in Brooklyn right now and everything. But
- 6:13Speaker 3: we're gonna try to make our way over there a
- 6:14Speaker 3: little bit, guys, get a little taste of the city.
- 6:18Speaker 3: Uh as well, make our way over to maybe the
- 6:22Speaker 3: Nike store or something. Take them around around that area.
- 6:25Speaker 3: You get a chance to take them by by the
- 6:27Speaker 3: World Trade Center a little bit and take it a
- 6:29Speaker 3: little bit of that. Some of my guys has never
- 6:31Speaker 3: seen that part of the country. Uh, so just give
- 6:34Speaker 3: them a little little taste of that as well. Uh.
- 6:37Speaker 3: In terms of the venue and and opportunity. Uh, with
- 6:42Speaker 3: the event we're playing in. Uh, it's one of the
- 6:44Speaker 3: one of the better events in college basketball, the Legends Classic,
- 6:48Speaker 3: and hasn't been over the years. That's great. Uh, you know,
- 6:52Speaker 3: teams and participants over the years. Uh there you know
- 6:57Speaker 3: for us, I mean, you know, we have NBA scouting
- 7:00Speaker 3: practice every day, we have NBA scouts, you know, you
- 7:03Speaker 3: know home games. You know, I would like to think
- 7:05Speaker 3: that there would definitely be a lot of personnel there.
- 7:08Speaker 3: Uh in terms of watching that event, because you got
- 7:12Speaker 3: four really good teams and and on those teams you
- 7:16Speaker 3: have potential guys that can play at the next level.
- 7:19Speaker 6: Hey, coach one of the ass A two part question.
- 7:21Speaker 6: Number one, you talked about working from the inside out.
- 7:25Speaker 6: What can you make of what Kedrick excuse me, kayten
- 7:28Speaker 6: Cedric has done so far? And then it looked like
- 7:32Speaker 6: it took a little while for Trey Johnson. He finished
- 7:35Speaker 6: with eighteen, but it looks like it took him a
- 7:37Speaker 6: little bit to get going. The other night, what do
- 7:41Speaker 6: you attest that to And obviously he can score at anytime.
- 7:45Speaker 3: You know, Mike too, good old question, kayten Cedric. You know,
- 7:49Speaker 3: I think he's still again just stratching the surface on
- 7:52Speaker 3: on the type of year. I think he's gonna be
- 7:54Speaker 3: capable having forced you know, he's a guy who was
- 7:58Speaker 3: a mobile, agile, big that can on the floor. He
- 8:00Speaker 3: can switch out and guard some all the guys he
- 8:05Speaker 3: he's shown, you know that they can score a little
- 8:07Speaker 3: bit face in the basket. He can score a little
- 8:10Speaker 3: bit face uh, you know with his back to the
- 8:12Speaker 3: basket as well. And uh, you know, we need him
- 8:15Speaker 3: to give us a paint presence, a paint presence in
- 8:18Speaker 3: terms of scoring the ball, you know, being a guy
- 8:21Speaker 3: that can assist out of the post as well, and
- 8:23Speaker 3: being a guy that can rebound for us, you know.
- 8:25Speaker 3: And they're gonna be nights where he may not have
- 8:27Speaker 3: as many rebounds because he's having to block out his
- 8:30Speaker 3: guy quite a bit, two in guards having to come
- 8:32Speaker 3: down and rebound, uh and everything. But but case's one
- 8:35Speaker 3: of those guys that you know, and we watched him
- 8:37Speaker 3: on tape at Virginia, you know, one of the elite
- 8:41Speaker 3: you know, ball stream covers, guys can really get out
- 8:44Speaker 3: and hard. Heade on the ball screen and get back
- 8:47Speaker 3: with the guy. Uh. A guy that should be one
- 8:49Speaker 3: of the elite rim protectors in all the college basketball
- 8:53Speaker 3: UH as well.
- 8:54Speaker 6: Uh.
- 8:54Speaker 3: But but again, I think he's just scratching the surface.
- 8:57Speaker 3: You know. He's a guy that can step out and
- 8:58Speaker 3: stretch the floor forwards as well. Look for him to
- 9:01Speaker 3: try to make at least one three a game for US. UH.
- 9:04Speaker 3: And then and then when you talk about Trey Johnson,
- 9:07Speaker 3: Trey Johnson is one of those guys. Again, Mike, I
- 9:09Speaker 3: think that he took two shots in the first half.
- 9:13Speaker 3: I mean he could have taken five, seven, eight shots.
- 9:17Speaker 3: He could have. But Trey's always been one of those guys,
- 9:20Speaker 3: even when in the recruiting process and watching him play
- 9:23Speaker 3: all the games we watched him play AU or with
- 9:26Speaker 3: this high school team, He's always been a guy that's
- 9:28Speaker 3: always played the right way. You know, he makes the
- 9:31Speaker 3: simple play, lets the game come to him. Didn't really
- 9:35Speaker 3: force it, you know what I mean, he didn't really
- 9:38Speaker 3: press I think he's the guy that puts a lot
- 9:40Speaker 3: of work in in the gym, and he trusts the
- 9:43Speaker 3: process and when it's time for him to step up.
- 9:47Speaker 3: He stepped up and has no problem making shots and
- 9:50Speaker 3: taking shots and everything, but he's never been a guy
- 9:52Speaker 3: to force it. I think he's always I think one
- 9:54Speaker 3: thing that he hasn't been given enough credit for over
- 9:57Speaker 3: the years is that he's a better passer than what
- 10:00Speaker 3: people think. He's got a good vision of the floor,
- 10:03Speaker 3: becoming a really good decision maker. Then maybe times we
- 10:06Speaker 3: have him even just play, you know, play point guard
- 10:09Speaker 3: or position boards and initiate office. But he has some
- 10:12Speaker 3: versatility to him. He's just not just a shot maker.
- 10:16Speaker 7: Sweet yeah, Hey, coach Austin Barrick for w ER Sports
- 10:20Speaker 7: in Syracuse, you talked a lot about how your faith
- 10:24Speaker 7: and your coaching staff you leaned on those things when
- 10:28Speaker 7: you took over the job, or rather when you took
- 10:30Speaker 7: over as the acting head coach December of twenty twenty two.
- 10:34Speaker 7: And now it's been nearly two full years since that happened.
- 10:38Speaker 7: Because of you, you now time to reflect on that time.
- 10:41Speaker 7: Now that you have this perspective, how do you compare
- 10:44Speaker 7: the challenges of that time frame with the challenges that
- 10:47Speaker 7: you now experience as a coach today.
- 10:51Speaker 3: Well, great question in Austin, Thank you. I think by myself.
- 10:55Speaker 3: You know, I'm I'm always always kind of been a
- 10:58Speaker 3: faith led guy in terms of you know, really obviously
- 11:04Speaker 3: everyone wants an opportunity in life, of course, is all
- 11:07Speaker 3: you prepared for that opportunity. I think for me, I
- 11:09Speaker 3: got a chance to work for some great bosses over
- 11:12Speaker 3: the years that are still great mentors to me in
- 11:16Speaker 3: my life, and you know, had me more than prepared
- 11:19Speaker 3: to become a head coach out at Presno State. I
- 11:23Speaker 3: was at President State for seven years in the Mount West,
- 11:25Speaker 3: very competitive Mount West from top to bottom, great coaches,
- 11:29Speaker 3: great venues, and really good teams. And got a chance
- 11:34Speaker 3: to really kind of cut my teeth quite a bit
- 11:36Speaker 3: and grew in to be a head coach. Spent three
- 11:39Speaker 3: years at UTAP, so really had ten years as a
- 11:42Speaker 3: head coach when I came back here. I've been here
- 11:45Speaker 3: nine years previously working for Rick Barnes, a Hall of
- 11:49Speaker 3: Fame coach. So the landscape of Texas in terms of
- 11:56Speaker 3: being here, I mean, we had a really good run
- 11:59Speaker 3: when I was here. In the nine years I was here,
- 12:00Speaker 3: we did everything except win a national championship. You guys,
- 12:03Speaker 3: beat us in a national championship, you know, and and
- 12:07Speaker 3: O three. But but no, I think you know, the
- 12:11Speaker 3: one thing I learned and working with Rick Barnes, Jerre,
- 12:14Speaker 3: Wayne Wright, Harry Miller, you know, you're only gonna be
- 12:16Speaker 3: as the people you have around you. You know, when
- 12:19Speaker 3: I was able to take over the rains here, Chris
- 12:22Speaker 3: had put together a really good staff and uh, we
- 12:25Speaker 3: had a great group of guys that had no egos,
- 12:29Speaker 3: and it was all about, you know, what can we
- 12:32Speaker 3: do every day to make this program relevantly in at
- 12:35Speaker 3: the level that we that we know that that we're
- 12:37Speaker 3: more than capable being being at in college basketball. And
- 12:41Speaker 3: I think we've had that approach from day once since
- 12:43Speaker 3: we've been back here. And I've been lucky enough to
- 12:46Speaker 3: be able to have other head coaches on my staff
- 12:49Speaker 3: that have tremendous experiences. They've had some minute sussess themselves
- 12:52Speaker 3: as head coaches, but a yain no egos. It's all
- 12:56Speaker 3: about how do we move this program and get our
- 12:59Speaker 3: guys better every single day collectively, you know, as as
- 13:03Speaker 3: a group. And uh, you know, for myself, you know,
- 13:08Speaker 3: they really helped me and I think we've really grown into,
- 13:13Speaker 3: uh developing a really good culture a culture here. You know,
- 13:16Speaker 3: your people say all the time. Culture. You know, we've
- 13:19Speaker 3: developed obviously an atmosphere in an environment. Well, we feel
- 13:24Speaker 3: like our guys, you know, from the time they get
- 13:26Speaker 3: her to the time they lead not only better players,
- 13:28Speaker 3: but the better people as well, because we hold those
- 13:31Speaker 3: guys accountable, uh to try to do the right thing
- 13:33Speaker 3: and be about the right things every single day on
- 13:35Speaker 3: and off the court, excelling the classroom, selling the you
- 13:40Speaker 3: know on the court, and uh, you know, carry themselves
- 13:43Speaker 3: at a at a very high level, just like we
- 13:45Speaker 3: try to carry our brand at a very high level.
- 13:47Speaker 3: But you know, I'm living a dream every day being
- 13:50Speaker 3: a head coach at the University of Texas. I'm a
- 13:51Speaker 3: Texas boy, and uh, you know, I love being here.
- 13:55Speaker 3: I love working with our guys every day. We've got
- 13:58Speaker 3: a great administration and uh leadership on this campus. So
- 14:03Speaker 3: it's a great time to be on the forty acres
- 14:05Speaker 3: man and be a longhorn.
- 14:06Speaker 8: Yeah, I coach. I'm Zach wilfrom with The Daily Orange,
- 14:08Speaker 8: the student run newspaper on campus at Syracuse. JJ Syracuse
- 14:13Speaker 8: guard JJ Starling scored thirty eight points in the syrcu's
- 14:17Speaker 8: most recent game. I was wondering what you've seen from
- 14:19Speaker 8: him so far, and what you planned to do you
- 14:21Speaker 8: try and contain him Thursday, And what are some other
- 14:24Speaker 8: things that you've seen from Syracuse that kind of stand
- 14:26Speaker 8: out on film to you?
- 14:28Speaker 3: Coach Audering the staff, they put together a really good
- 14:30Speaker 3: group of guys. I think, just like all of us
- 14:32Speaker 3: right now, we're all trying to get out guys to
- 14:34Speaker 3: kind of mission. Have really good chemistry on the floor,
- 14:37Speaker 3: but extremely talented roster, you know, and you talk about Snorting,
- 14:41Speaker 3: He's he's playing as well as any guard in the
- 14:43Speaker 3: country right now. He's coming off a game with thirty
- 14:45Speaker 3: eight points and he's doing at every level. He's a
- 14:48Speaker 3: three level score. You can get downhill mitt range, he's
- 14:51Speaker 3: making three. He's a confident player right now, playing at
- 14:55Speaker 3: a very high level. You know, when you talk about
- 14:57Speaker 3: a guy like bail No ball's premier shooters in the A, C.
- 15:01Speaker 3: C and all of the country. And so you know,
- 15:04Speaker 3: you got two guys out there, primal guys that can
- 15:06Speaker 3: really put the ball in the basket. And then when
- 15:09Speaker 3: you talk about a low post threat, a guy that's
- 15:11Speaker 3: a really good passer and and and really competes at
- 15:14Speaker 3: a high level with Lampkin and that that that ass
- 15:17Speaker 3: that ask to the firepower there with those with those
- 15:20Speaker 3: dynamic guards. You know, Uh, Carlos, you know, he's a
- 15:24Speaker 3: you know, defensive stopper there. You know, player of the year,
- 15:27Speaker 3: defensive player of the year in his league. Can't play
- 15:30Speaker 3: with the ball with him. He's an elite defender. Donnie Freeman,
- 15:35Speaker 3: you know, we all try to recruit Dunny. Dunnie's a
- 15:38Speaker 3: has an extremely high ceiling, you know. So you know,
- 15:42Speaker 3: again playing that stretch for position, he had the chance
- 15:46Speaker 3: to be an elite player, uh, in all of college basketball.
- 15:50Speaker 3: So you you talk about those five players, and then
- 15:53Speaker 3: you have guys coming off the bench that that compliment
- 15:55Speaker 3: those guys as well. You talk about Davis coming in
- 15:57Speaker 3: from Delaware, capable score, big time rebounder, you know, Taylor,
- 16:03Speaker 3: you know, another guy who's been around the block, wait
- 16:05Speaker 3: for us, been over Georgia State, kind of do it
- 16:08Speaker 3: all guard, you know, could defend, could score. And then
- 16:11Speaker 3: the young kid comeing in, could really scored the basketball.
- 16:14Speaker 3: Young rushman hay on the wing there and stuff. Man,
- 16:17Speaker 3: he uh, he's he's a he got a chance to
- 16:20Speaker 3: be really really good in terms of shooting the basketball.
- 16:22Speaker 3: And scoring the ball. So you know you talking about
- 16:24Speaker 3: the eight nine rotation. Uh tho. The young big that
- 16:28Speaker 3: comes in that can shoot the basketball and play with toughness.
- 16:31Speaker 3: They put together a really good roster, you know, and
- 16:34Speaker 3: so a lot of respect, a lot of kudos to
- 16:37Speaker 3: to coach Arthur and his staff. It's gonna make make
- 16:41Speaker 3: a lot of challenges, a lot of challenges for us.
