- 0:08Speaker 1: This is me Eater podcast coming at you shirtless, severely,
- 0:13Speaker 1: bug bitten, and in my case, underwear listening Hunt podcast,
- 0:18Speaker 1: you can't predict anything presented by on X. Hunt creators
- 0:22Speaker 1: are the most comprehensive digital mapping system for hunters. Download
- 0:26Speaker 1: the Hunt app from the iTunes or Google play store,
- 0:29Speaker 1: nor where you stand with on X. Yeah, I want
- 0:35Speaker 1: to revisit um argument we had this morning. Okay, I
- 0:40Speaker 1: can't wait before we get out. Oh you know, first,
- 0:43Speaker 1: let's introduce couple people because we got Let's we have
- 0:45Speaker 1: some people that everyone's used to. Rick Smith's here, Cameraman Extraordinaire,
- 0:51Speaker 1: Seth Morris, the flip flop flasher here in the Flesh,
- 0:55Speaker 1: and then very special guests Pete Alonso happy to be here,
- 1:00Speaker 1: roll out some of the super litives. This kind of
- 1:02Speaker 1: stuff makes you uncomfortable. Roll out the super I'll do
- 1:05Speaker 1: it for you. Thank you. Okay, your first Major League
- 1:11Speaker 1: baseball year, you're a rookie with the New York Mats,
- 1:16Speaker 1: and you hit more home runs than than any rookie
- 1:22Speaker 1: in the history of the world. Yeah. Not only that
- 1:27Speaker 1: he had so many damn home runs that he breaks
- 1:30Speaker 1: the rookie record, but then hits more home runs than
- 1:32Speaker 1: anyone rookie or not for the year. Yeah, I mean,
- 1:36Speaker 1: and won the home run Derby. This is a this
- 1:39Speaker 1: is a special year. But what did the uh what
- 1:41Speaker 1: did the thing on my rifles say? It says you
- 1:44Speaker 1: gotta have a high ass? High ass? That's right? Explain that, yeah, exactly. No,
- 1:50Speaker 1: what did I say your rifle? Home run King? That's right,
- 1:52Speaker 1: home run King. Yah, you're comfortable with that. Absolutely, that's
- 1:56Speaker 1: that's my thing. So the home run King is here,
- 1:59Speaker 1: and then uh, Yanni's back from assignment. He still hasn't
- 2:04Speaker 1: listened to that, so we made of all with Yanni highlights.
- 2:07Speaker 1: Did you listen to it yet? I will to maybe
- 2:09Speaker 1: tomorrow on every plane ride home, I'll try. It really
- 2:14Speaker 1: surprises me that you wouldn't listen. I would feel that
- 2:17Speaker 1: because like you're like a co host and everything that
- 2:20Speaker 1: if you weren't there, you'd listen just out of like
- 2:23Speaker 1: a sense of obligation. Listen. I really want to, but
- 2:26Speaker 1: you know, my to do list is long. Maybe it
- 2:29Speaker 1: was just a nice break. And then our other very
- 2:32Speaker 1: special guests, Houndsman, Uh Cody. When you use your last name,
- 2:37Speaker 1: I know you'd like to be a little under the
- 2:38Speaker 1: radar in life. Yeah, just a little bit. It'd be
- 2:41Speaker 1: our eyes Steve Cody. Yeah, there you go. I like that.
- 2:46Speaker 1: Good to be here. Yeah, give me a favorite Cody
- 2:49Speaker 1: and pull your mic a little closer to your mustache.
- 2:52Speaker 1: There you go like that. Yeah, Um, I want to
- 2:56Speaker 1: get to the fight me and Yanni had. But I
- 2:57Speaker 1: think the real quick I want to say about Cody, uh,
- 3:02Speaker 1: probably the more most interest. If I was still a
- 3:04Speaker 1: magazine writer, I would be after you hard about the
- 3:08Speaker 1: fact that you one of your many revenue streams comes
- 3:14Speaker 1: from retrieving wild catching wild cattle. That's a fact with
- 3:22Speaker 1: hound dogs, Yes, sir, can you explain real quick the
- 3:25Speaker 1: folks what like, uh like, what constitutes a wild wild cattle.
- 3:32Speaker 1: Most of the ranches around here they'll have some domesticated
- 3:35Speaker 1: livestock gon Ferrell, Right, they've been tried to been rounded
- 3:39Speaker 1: up together, but the resources they have are limited, meaning
- 3:44Speaker 1: that they ride out and try to chase it with
- 3:46Speaker 1: a quad runner exactly. Yeah, everything we do, most everything
- 3:49Speaker 1: we do is horseback and with dogs, you know, catch
- 3:53Speaker 1: to baby to catch. So the rancher will call up
- 3:56Speaker 1: and he'll be like, I rounded everything up, but there's
- 3:58Speaker 1: ten I can't catch exactly, then Dante put the hounds down, right,
- 4:06Speaker 1: But how do the hounds? How do the hounds um?
- 4:12Speaker 1: How do they know where to drive it? Like I
- 4:14Speaker 1: can picture that they would catch it and surround it,
- 4:16Speaker 1: and that's what they do ultimately. Like the stuff that's
- 4:19Speaker 1: really wild, you want to uh the dogs to see
- 4:23Speaker 1: it first. They don't. You shouldn't even be in the
- 4:25Speaker 1: picture for quite some time. And you want to sneak
- 4:28Speaker 1: in real easy because what they're scared of, obviously is
- 4:31Speaker 1: a human being. You know, they haven't had bay dogs
- 4:34Speaker 1: on them. But you bay them up. Ultimately, you bay
- 4:37Speaker 1: them up and then easy and and he's out, easy
- 4:41Speaker 1: in and then until you until you close the distance,
- 4:44Speaker 1: and then you start roping them. And so that's what
- 4:46Speaker 1: you're doing, subduing the creature. Yeah, right, you're throwing a
- 4:51Speaker 1: lariat around it exactly. I thought you somehow we're driving
- 4:54Speaker 1: them with the dogs. Well, you can do that the
- 4:56Speaker 1: dogs and follow you and push the cow along and
- 4:58Speaker 1: they will, like I have some dogs like three or
- 5:01Speaker 1: four that'll bay and then if you ride in, they'll
- 5:04Speaker 1: opposet me and go to the other side of the
- 5:07Speaker 1: cattle and then push cattle to the horse, and then
- 5:09Speaker 1: the cattle get a sense of security and they come
- 5:13Speaker 1: to the horseback, you know, the rider, and then you
- 5:15Speaker 1: can you can go in some pretty rough country and
- 5:18Speaker 1: get some pretty pretty bad stuff out that way. Uh
- 5:22Speaker 1: what would be? How many can you catch in today?
- 5:24Speaker 1: Oh gosh, depends on how bad they are, you know,
- 5:26Speaker 1: and how much they've been molested throughout their life, and
- 5:29Speaker 1: how many tricks they know, you know, has some stuff
- 5:33Speaker 1: just been quattered around and kind of you know, messed
- 5:38Speaker 1: with their pretty pretty easy to change their mind, but
- 5:42Speaker 1: if they've been through it a bunch. Have you ever
- 5:45Speaker 1: met when you couldn't catch How many have you ever
- 5:51Speaker 1: caught in a single day? Oh gosh, it just depends,
- 5:54Speaker 1: Like bay ups, I would say, on a good day,
- 5:59Speaker 1: with help, of course, you know, usually have some cowboys
- 6:02Speaker 1: helping me just to tie and or whatever rope once
- 6:06Speaker 1: we get getting bade up with the dogs. But man,
- 6:10Speaker 1: i'd say, on a good day and really good pickings,
- 6:14Speaker 1: you know, twenty head, you know, and sometimes you'll strike
- 6:18Speaker 1: a deal where the ranch are so fed up with them,
- 6:23Speaker 1: you'll strike a deal where you'll you'll get a the
- 6:27Speaker 1: sale price exactly everything you can catch, right they're ready
- 6:31Speaker 1: to set that, the ranch is ready to sacrifice that
- 6:33Speaker 1: to get you someone to catch them, most definitely, because
- 6:36Speaker 1: what happens is like on a on a on the
- 6:38Speaker 1: big outfits, you'll have some pretty wild or feral cattle
- 6:42Speaker 1: that will teach your good cattle bad habits, you know,
- 6:45Speaker 1: and so that incentivizes them to get them off exactly.
- 6:48Speaker 1: You know, you might get you some really good angus
- 6:50Speaker 1: or you know, a good commercial herd, and you want
- 6:52Speaker 1: to interject it into a ranch that has some wild
- 6:54Speaker 1: stuff on it. Well, you'll start losing pieces because they
- 6:58Speaker 1: you know, they'll start ganging up together and got Yeah,
- 7:02Speaker 1: you gotta start with a clean slate, like yeah, and
- 7:05Speaker 1: then you'll go as far as so you live in
- 7:08Speaker 1: southern Colorado and you'll stray as far as Utah, Nevada. Yeah,
- 7:14Speaker 1: we'll cast some cattle out in California even Yeah. How
- 7:18Speaker 1: long do you stay? How long do you stay when
- 7:19Speaker 1: you go out to catch cattle just kind of depends
- 7:21Speaker 1: on the project and how many there is, and you know,
- 7:25Speaker 1: on what condition your horses and dogs are in. After
- 7:27Speaker 1: a while, sometimes it beat you up a little bit,
- 7:31Speaker 1: you know, and you camp out while you're doing it.
- 7:34Speaker 1: Most certainly, Yes, sir. Have you ever stayed somewhere for
- 7:38Speaker 1: a month catching wild cattle? Oh? Yeah, yeah, I was
- 7:41Speaker 1: out in the Utah desert for about six months, kind
- 7:45Speaker 1: of taking care of a place that what's pretty rugged
- 7:49Speaker 1: and wild, just catching cows. Yeah, that's a hell of
- 7:54Speaker 1: a business. How do people find you got a name
- 7:57Speaker 1: for your business? Are you looking for more business? I
- 7:59Speaker 1: don't at the present time, but yeah, we're doing all right.
- 8:05Speaker 1: So you don't need to. You don't need to like
- 8:06Speaker 1: you got you don't put a plug in here. I
- 8:07Speaker 1: don't imagine you have like a website. No, sir, Yeah,
- 8:10Speaker 1: I don't even have electricity at my house. And I
- 8:15Speaker 1: take that back. I did get solar about four months ago,
- 8:20Speaker 1: two hundred and sixty five panels. So how many dogs
- 8:24Speaker 1: you got? How many horses you got? Just a couple?
- 8:28Speaker 1: Do you bring that whole slew of dogs when you
- 8:30Speaker 1: go to catch wild cattle? Oh? I got some dogs
- 8:32Speaker 1: in particularly that stay home, like I got just one
- 8:37Speaker 1: or two. But for the most part, everybody goes. Even
- 8:40Speaker 1: my lion dogs like or hog dogs. They all they're multipurpose.
- 8:45Speaker 1: So you got like hog dogs, lion dogs, and cattle dogs.
- 8:48Speaker 1: And they're all the same dogs. Yes, okay, they's got
- 8:50Speaker 1: wiry different hats. Yeah, how do you how do you
- 8:52Speaker 1: keep your lion dogs from running lions when they're when
- 8:56Speaker 1: you're chasing cattle And that's the thing like usually you're
- 8:58Speaker 1: in and I wouldn't mind it, you know, if they
- 9:01Speaker 1: did kind of go do their deal, as long as
- 9:04Speaker 1: they're staying straight on what I want. But usually if
- 9:07Speaker 1: you set your dog down in cattle country, you're the
- 9:11Speaker 1: likelihood that you catching the line is you know, slim
- 9:14Speaker 1: to none. And when you go hunt a hog, you're
- 9:18Speaker 1: you're in cattle country, but there's usually not a lot
- 9:20Speaker 1: of lions in hog country. Well how do you how
- 9:23Speaker 1: does he know where these running hogs or cattle? Well,
- 9:25Speaker 1: you put them on them, you know, you start the
- 9:27Speaker 1: track and say that's what we're gonna hunt today, man.
- 9:35Speaker 1: And they're smart dogs, you know. I started out my ultimately,
- 9:38Speaker 1: my the first dogs that I had was mostly Catahoula,
- 9:42Speaker 1: and then I injected a little bit of red tick
- 9:44Speaker 1: English red tick into him and then now I went
- 9:47Speaker 1: to some Argentine dogo with the mix. But you know,
- 9:51Speaker 1: they're they're fast, fast to catch, and they'll still put
- 9:54Speaker 1: their nose on the ground to trail and they're fun
- 9:57Speaker 1: to hunt. Yeah you're saying, you're telling I mean one
- 10:00Speaker 1: of your lion hounds. Um, we'll visually track the line,
- 10:05Speaker 1: but you'll see the track right and run along and
- 10:09Speaker 1: just check it now and then. But he said he
- 10:10Speaker 1: can still grind it out if you need to. Yeah, yeah,
- 10:13Speaker 1: he'll cheat a bit, you know, especially on fresh snow.
- 10:17Speaker 1: You know there's a and they'll get in the dirt too,
- 10:21Speaker 1: And there's been a that's a whole another deal controversy,
- 10:24Speaker 1: controversy about dry tracks or dirt tracks versus snow tracks.
- 10:29Speaker 1: You know, how's that a controversy? Well, as far as
- 10:32Speaker 1: all the guys that do it on dry ground are badass,
- 10:35Speaker 1: that's the controversy. I mean a snow track up here.
- 10:40Speaker 1: I've seen snow tracks that you would look at it
- 10:42Speaker 1: and swear to be damned that she could that was
- 10:45Speaker 1: the last night track, but it might be a week old,
- 10:50Speaker 1: and you know, the scent is dissipated through it. Anyways,
- 10:53Speaker 1: it's and sometimes I'm psyching you don't like dry ground
- 10:57Speaker 1: guys talking all about how they're badass and you're not.
- 11:02Speaker 1: I think there's uh yeah, there's just certain places for
- 11:05Speaker 1: certain dogs. And so would your dogs be able to
- 11:08Speaker 1: catch a lion down in Arizona with no snow? Yeah,
- 11:11Speaker 1: we hunt it south of here in New Mexico quite
- 11:13Speaker 1: a bit down the red dirt, the buffs and uh,
- 11:17Speaker 1: it's short cedar country and it's mostly dirt. But even
- 11:20Speaker 1: down there, you know, the freezing the thaw is what
- 11:22Speaker 1: gets you ultimately, Like even with its snow or snow
- 11:26Speaker 1: or dirt, like it's it's a scent that's held in
- 11:29Speaker 1: the track and that freezing, that thaw just slowly dissipates it.
- 11:33Speaker 1: So in the in the dirt conditions, Um, the right
- 11:37Speaker 1: kind of dirt I believe will hold scent longer than
- 11:41Speaker 1: a snow track. And and there's different types of snow
- 11:44Speaker 1: that will hold a scent longer than uh just regular snow.
- 11:49Speaker 1: Snow ain't just snow once it's the ground. It could
- 11:51Speaker 1: be wet, or it could be fluffy or what's what's
- 11:53Speaker 1: the best kind of snow for holding scent? Uh, And
- 11:59Speaker 1: just a little bit of more cheering it seems, you know,
- 12:02Speaker 1: not it not the real fluffy stuff that dry, dusty powder. Yeah,
- 12:05Speaker 1: it kind of kicks back into itself. And you don't
- 12:07Speaker 1: want a real wet track, it seems because it leaches. Maybe,
- 12:12Speaker 1: And I'm just saying, but yeah, how many lions have
- 12:15Speaker 1: you caught in your life? Oh gosh, man, I don't know.
- 12:17Speaker 1: I've only been doing it like eighteen seventeen, eighteen years.
- 12:25Speaker 1: Telling you my first year is pretty dry. We chased
- 12:28Speaker 1: him and that was before callers. You know that, even
- 12:31Speaker 1: the telemetry. I didn't have a settle telemetry until two
- 12:35Speaker 1: or three years later. But mostly it was set your
- 12:37Speaker 1: hounds down, you know, and go. You just listened to
- 12:40Speaker 1: him and try and follow him. And that was usually
- 12:43Speaker 1: a ship rock. But uh, okay, I wanna get back
- 12:47Speaker 1: to fighting, and Joanni, heck, I thought about it, Johnnie.
- 12:49Speaker 1: Yanni took offense. I was saying, yeah, I got into
- 12:56Speaker 1: his head. No, I mean, explain everything, and you tell
- 13:01Speaker 1: me if I explain it wrong. I was saying that, um,
- 13:07Speaker 1: I would that I don't understand when people send away
- 13:09Speaker 1: their kids to boarding school because I want my kids
- 13:13Speaker 1: around so I can snuggle them. And I was like, man,
- 13:17Speaker 1: I would hate if they had left earlier than is natural.
- 13:23Speaker 1: Yanni took offense at this, not because he thinks that
- 13:26Speaker 1: it's great to send your kids off a boarding school
- 13:28Speaker 1: and not snuggle them. But because he took offense at
- 13:32Speaker 1: the idea that one would describe something as natural when
- 13:37Speaker 1: there's plenty of places in the world where you don't
- 13:40Speaker 1: move away from home at all and you stay in
- 13:41Speaker 1: your tight in your family unit for the whole life.
- 13:44Speaker 1: And I thought about it this morning. If I said
- 13:46Speaker 1: to you, uh, white tail dear have their breeding season
- 13:53Speaker 1: in mid November, it's natural for them to do that,
- 13:57Speaker 1: would you be like, uh? Because is they rot in
- 14:02Speaker 1: January and Mexico? So does that make it unnatural that
- 14:09Speaker 1: they rout in mid November elsewhere? That's what you were
- 14:15Speaker 1: trying to do to me this morning. And now that
- 14:16Speaker 1: I present to you that way, you're left speechless. You
- 14:20Speaker 1: got you had many hours to think about it. Okay,
- 14:23Speaker 1: So now that you're coming back at me with a debate,
- 14:25Speaker 1: I think you should give me at least more than
- 14:27Speaker 1: three seconds before you say I'm speechless about this. Um, Okay,
- 14:32Speaker 1: you want me to give you you want me You
- 14:33Speaker 1: want to come back to it. No, I think I can.
- 14:35Speaker 1: I can give you a rebuttal right now. Um, I
- 14:41Speaker 1: think that it's uh, how do I put it? Oh?
- 14:49Speaker 1: You're a learned thing. You left home, yeah, and went
- 14:54Speaker 1: away far away, Yeah, never to return. It's sad to
- 15:01Speaker 1: think about sometimes. Was that unnatural? I don't know perfectly natural.
- 15:07Speaker 1: I just felt like it was the wrong use of
- 15:10Speaker 1: the word, that's all. What will be the right word? Well,
- 15:15Speaker 1: I think you figured it out after we started talking
- 15:17Speaker 1: about You said that it was like culturally not the norm.
- 15:21Speaker 1: Oh yeah, so I think for the deer, I took
- 15:25Speaker 1: offense that you taken offense. I hurt my feelings. Um,
- 15:30Speaker 1: can you tell everyone real quick, yann about your Colorado alcunt,
- 15:34Speaker 1: real quick hunting story, whatever you need. Then then we're
- 15:38Speaker 1: gonna then we're gonna narrow in on Pete Alonzo's big hunt. Yeah. Yeah,
- 15:43Speaker 1: it was good. You know I burned um like twelve
- 15:49Speaker 1: or thirteen points. Yeah, you need to know which because
- 15:53Speaker 1: I have a bet with Brody that it was in
- 15:56Speaker 1: the teens. Oh, it was definitely in the teens. I
- 15:59Speaker 1: want my bet. Definitely the teens. Even my buddy Ethan,
- 16:03Speaker 1: who drew the tag with me, was in the teens
- 16:05Speaker 1: as a resident. He was eleven, I think, and I
- 16:09Speaker 1: had one or two more than he did. And uh,
- 16:13Speaker 1: I had known about the unit for a while and
- 16:15Speaker 1: been thinking about it for a while. What was your
- 16:17Speaker 1: exposure to it? Just people friends and people I met
- 16:24Speaker 1: through the industry, people that lived around it, you know,
- 16:27Speaker 1: had good things to say about it. And um, unfortunately
- 16:33Speaker 1: I'm setting the stage for sort of like a letdown.
- 16:35Speaker 1: He can he can feel it coming because I didn't
- 16:38Speaker 1: end up killing the bi little giant that I was,
- 16:40Speaker 1: you know that you hope for when you burn twelve
- 16:42Speaker 1: or thirteen points on a unit. Um. But we had
- 16:47Speaker 1: a great hunt. The best part about the hunt was
- 16:49Speaker 1: I had to hang on my buddy Ethan, who was,
- 16:52Speaker 1: yeah and definitely like my main mentor over all my
- 16:57Speaker 1: elk hunting years. He's like the guy that definitely took
- 16:59Speaker 1: me from just like could dude that kind of knew
- 17:01Speaker 1: how to walk around in the woods and would bump
- 17:03Speaker 1: into stuff every now and then, to someone that could
- 17:06Speaker 1: get it done on a regular basis. Um. So that
- 17:09Speaker 1: was rat to you know, be able to share an
- 17:11Speaker 1: elk camp with him. And we had a photographer with
- 17:15Speaker 1: us that captured the the action for us. And then
- 17:19Speaker 1: another buddy of ours, uh Jim, that came down from
- 17:24Speaker 1: Eagle County and helped us out on the hunt. The
- 17:27Speaker 1: hunting was rad like aside from not being never finding
- 17:32Speaker 1: a giant bull like anything over three. Um, well, was
- 17:37Speaker 1: it just dudes everywhere? No superlimited? Yeah? Um, we definitely
- 17:43Speaker 1: there were some camps around, but like you never felt
- 17:45Speaker 1: like the elk were even pressured, like every every day
- 17:48Speaker 1: you could have just walked in the woods and shot
- 17:50Speaker 1: a bull within an hour during prime time. Oh yeah,
- 17:55Speaker 1: we had like great bugling action. Um. And I was
- 17:58Speaker 1: kind of torn between because they are bugling in his
- 18:00Speaker 1: own where you cut in glass, as well as I
- 18:03Speaker 1: would like to just to be able to look over
- 18:05Speaker 1: a lot of critters. So I was torn between like
- 18:08Speaker 1: jumping in and having great fun bugling and chasing the
- 18:11Speaker 1: herd around and and trying to look look pick over
- 18:14Speaker 1: bulls that way versus trying to just look at a
- 18:16Speaker 1: bunch of open country and trying to find a big one.
- 18:20Speaker 1: We had very similar weather to what we had this week,
- 18:23Speaker 1: meaning that it was like unseasonably warm, dry, no precipitation. Um,
- 18:31Speaker 1: so they were definitely not hanging out long, not not
- 18:34Speaker 1: being you know, like I felt like the big bulls
- 18:36Speaker 1: had left the herds and they weren't being like forced
- 18:41Speaker 1: to go out into the open and feed. You know,
- 18:42Speaker 1: they were just tucked away in some hole and it
- 18:44Speaker 1: was gonna take a little bit of a miracle, you know,
- 18:46Speaker 1: to catch one sticking his nose out five minutes before dark,
- 18:50Speaker 1: you know. Um, so yeah, sweet sweet hunt and um
- 18:55Speaker 1: the last day, how many you think you looked at?
- 18:58Speaker 1: How many bulls? I don't know, say average five a day?
- 19:08Speaker 1: How many could you take in the poke at mm hmm,
- 19:12Speaker 1: I don't know twenty, No kidding? One evening? Yeah, I
- 19:16Speaker 1: saw how many bolds we see that night, not counting spikes.
- 19:21Speaker 1: I think seven branch chandler bulls like in this one
- 19:24Speaker 1: little drainage that we cruised around in. But just all
- 19:28Speaker 1: youngsters I had throwing all my Colorado out points into
- 19:35Speaker 1: the garbage. Hadn't. Oh, but you never would have caught
- 19:40Speaker 1: up with the point creek that's going on in Colorado.
- 19:43Speaker 1: You only had like five, and as I burned thirteen,
- 19:46Speaker 1: you never would have made it in your whole life
- 19:49Speaker 1: if it keeps going like it's been going. Yeah, because
- 19:52Speaker 1: next year you'd have six and it would take fourteen
- 19:55Speaker 1: to draw. Then you'd have seven and take fifteen. You'd
- 19:58Speaker 1: always be behind by quite a few it's a problem
- 20:03Speaker 1: that they're trying to deal with. Here's got a lot
- 20:06Speaker 1: of problems, man. So anyways, yeah, it all started when
- 20:11Speaker 1: they legalized weed, you think, so, um yeah, super fun hunt.
- 20:17Speaker 1: Just never found the big one, oh quick thing. But
- 20:21Speaker 1: you had fun. But you left everybody like they don't
- 20:24Speaker 1: know you got one. Yeah, I got one on the
- 20:26Speaker 1: last day with ten minutes left the morning. We were
- 20:29Speaker 1: hunting like a small, little teeny tiny drainage where I
- 20:33Speaker 1: was hoping that like it was off the beaten path,
- 20:35Speaker 1: there was no trail going to it, and I had
- 20:37Speaker 1: not seen any boot tracks in it. And We've gotten
- 20:39Speaker 1: a hot tip to go and check this out from
- 20:43Speaker 1: from from locals, and uh so we went in there,
- 20:46Speaker 1: and we were just looking at some pretty small, like
- 20:48Speaker 1: south facing steep rocky slopes that you know, don't look
- 20:53Speaker 1: like great habitat, but it could be a place where
- 20:56Speaker 1: one could be hide and you know, and I didn't
- 20:59Speaker 1: see the elk in there, but while we were in there,
- 21:01Speaker 1: I could look up and see like some alpine country
- 21:04Speaker 1: and I saw two big herds move into this basin
- 21:08Speaker 1: and uh too far away to even like even with
- 21:11Speaker 1: like the spot and scope to see if there was
- 21:13Speaker 1: any Like I could see bulls, but I couldn't see
- 21:16Speaker 1: what they were, And so we decided to go in
- 21:18Speaker 1: there that afternoon. You think he'll one that morning, So
- 21:21Speaker 1: we went and packed his bull out. Was it a
- 21:23Speaker 1: giant Nope, he had like he was in the magic
- 21:27Speaker 1: circle all morning and had let him all walk by,
- 21:31Speaker 1: like kind of died down. And so he was just
- 21:34Speaker 1: kind of slowly cruising back to the truck, and all
- 21:36Speaker 1: of a sudden, right below him, he just heard a
- 21:38Speaker 1: little and he just crept over to the edge and
- 21:41Speaker 1: there was one bed at like fifty yards and it
- 21:44Speaker 1: was kind of like, yes, this is the perfect opportunity.
- 21:47Speaker 1: So he rolled him yep, and it's bed. Where do
- 21:54Speaker 1: you get that, Cody? What's that shooting something in his bed?
- 21:59Speaker 1: If you're sneaking, have to get up on it. I
- 22:00Speaker 1: think it's all all good me too. People get pissed
- 22:04Speaker 1: about that. Yeah, I don't know why. I mean, because
- 22:06Speaker 1: they're not good at sneaking. They get jealous. Gotta get
- 22:09Speaker 1: in there. A monkst him. I shot a bucket in
- 22:11Speaker 1: s bed this year. He never flinched. Yeah, it's controversial
- 22:19Speaker 1: because people, It's controversial for two reasons. One reason is
- 22:21Speaker 1: that people think it's unsportsmanlike, Like it's sportsman like to
- 22:25Speaker 1: shoot him when they're running away from you, but not
- 22:28Speaker 1: sports like to shoot him when you've stuck up on him.
- 22:30Speaker 1: They don't know you're there or something. And because somehow
- 22:34Speaker 1: they feel like that you're they're at the disadvantage because
- 22:37Speaker 1: they're sleeping, their eyes are closed. And then it's controversial
- 22:42Speaker 1: to shoot something that's bad for good reason, in part
- 22:46Speaker 1: because it's it's hard to shot. Placement's difficult. Sometimes it's
- 22:51Speaker 1: hard to tell what's going on, definitely, So that's the
- 22:53Speaker 1: thing you gotta watch out for, is can you tell
- 22:55Speaker 1: what's going on? What about shooting a duck on water, Well,
- 22:59Speaker 1: that's really great point. Why is it bad to shoot
- 23:02Speaker 1: a turkey in the air, Good to shoot it on
- 23:05Speaker 1: the ground. Good to shoot a duck in the air,
- 23:08Speaker 1: bad to shoot it on the ground. It's confusing. It
- 23:13Speaker 1: is if I was duck hunting by myself in the
- 23:18Speaker 1: duck landing in the decourse, dude, bank Town. But when
- 23:23Speaker 1: you're with people, everybody looks at each other nervously. Oh,
- 23:27Speaker 1: if you're with me, you're gonna watch my gun go off.
- 23:33Speaker 1: I'm not that good at shooting and flying man. So
- 23:35Speaker 1: if I can, you know, get a bonus one towards
- 23:37Speaker 1: my limit like that, I'll take it. Um. So in
- 23:41Speaker 1: the afternoon we decided, Joe and I decided to go
- 23:45Speaker 1: after him, and uh, it was a commitment. It was
- 23:49Speaker 1: about three miles. We knew we had to go about
- 23:52Speaker 1: three miles and had to climb close to two thousand
- 23:54Speaker 1: feet to get to where they were where we had
- 23:56Speaker 1: last seen him, and I'd watch him till like so
- 23:59Speaker 1: I you that they had they weren't gonna go much farther.
- 24:02Speaker 1: And as soon as we got the elevation to where
- 24:04Speaker 1: we could see right into this little it was like
- 24:07Speaker 1: a I don't wanta say miniature, basically an avalanche shoot,
- 24:11Speaker 1: but uh kind of mellow. It didn't look like it
- 24:14Speaker 1: slid a lot, you know. It was more like a
- 24:16Speaker 1: just a real steep grassy meadow rocky above. And uh
- 24:21Speaker 1: we got first got eyes on him, and we were
- 24:23Speaker 1: maybe fift hundred plus yards away, and we saw this
- 24:28Speaker 1: bowl and all I could see was like a really
- 24:30Speaker 1: long main beam and a giant fourth and I thought, man,
- 24:33Speaker 1: here it is last day. It's all gonna come together.
- 24:37Speaker 1: So I didn't even bust out the spotting scope. I
- 24:39Speaker 1: just said, let's go, and we had to. They were
- 24:42Speaker 1: sort of feeding on the opposite side of this the
- 24:45Speaker 1: The shoot was bowl like and we were kind of
- 24:48Speaker 1: on a knob looking into it, and we had to
- 24:50Speaker 1: roll all the way around this knob and then get
- 24:53Speaker 1: on the face with him. And we tried to go
- 24:54Speaker 1: down off the knob and thought we'd get close enough
- 24:57Speaker 1: to where we could kind of shoot across into him.
- 24:59Speaker 1: But once we got to within range, like sub five
- 25:02Speaker 1: U uh, I just couldn't get a shooting lane at all.
- 25:06Speaker 1: So we had to climb back out and got on
- 25:08Speaker 1: the face with him and just waiting for the wind
- 25:11Speaker 1: was good. It was dropping down the face at that
- 25:12Speaker 1: point and just started. We got a great elk trail
- 25:14Speaker 1: that went right through the timber right at this open avalanche,
- 25:19Speaker 1: you know, meadow, and just kept sneaking, sneaking, sneaking, And
- 25:22Speaker 1: then it's like, I don't know, when I was probably
- 25:24Speaker 1: sixty yards from the edge of the meadow, I could
- 25:26Speaker 1: start to see, you know, elk moving in the meadow
- 25:29Speaker 1: and got a little closer and uh, I could see
- 25:32Speaker 1: the bowl, and that moment I glassed him up and
- 25:35Speaker 1: I realized that he wasn't you know what I was
- 25:37Speaker 1: after the Nice Bowl. You know, he's he's cool, but
- 25:41Speaker 1: not not the big the big giant. Yeah, but the
- 25:44Speaker 1: hunt was pretty much over. I had like at that point,
- 25:46Speaker 1: I had thirty minutes left in my season, and I'm like, Joe,
- 25:50Speaker 1: we could kill this bowl. We're gonna be packing elk
- 25:53Speaker 1: me all day tomorrow. And he was just like, this
- 25:58Speaker 1: dude's gotten into hunting. It like probably the age of fifty,
- 26:02Speaker 1: maybe fifty plus. He's about to turn a sixty and
- 26:05Speaker 1: it's so jazz and stoked on it that when I
- 26:08Speaker 1: turned around and kind of posed the question to like,
- 26:10Speaker 1: should should we kill or should we just happily roll
- 26:13Speaker 1: off the mountain under the stars and be done with it,
- 26:15Speaker 1: he was just like, get him, take him down, you know,
- 26:18Speaker 1: like I don't want this to end. And uh, you know,
- 26:22Speaker 1: my buddy Jimmy, he wanted some elk meat, and so
- 26:27Speaker 1: it wasn't a done deal, but I still had to
- 26:28Speaker 1: I had to sneak in there. By the time I
- 26:30Speaker 1: got a little bit closer, I had to fight off,
- 26:33Speaker 1: not fight off, but I was fighting all these calves
- 26:36Speaker 1: that were feeding right where I was trying to get to.
- 26:39Speaker 1: So they put their head down and move a little bit.
- 26:41Speaker 1: They lift their head up and they'd be chewing and
- 26:43Speaker 1: kind of they'd look at me, stare a little bit,
- 26:46Speaker 1: but then look away and put their head down. I'd
- 26:47Speaker 1: take another step or two. You can get a little
- 26:50Speaker 1: way a lot with calves, you know, they just don't
- 26:53Speaker 1: they haven't put two and two together yet. They're only
- 26:55Speaker 1: what at that point, they're six months old, right, And uh, Anyways,
- 27:01Speaker 1: he ends up me embedded. So I get into like
- 27:03Speaker 1: fifty sixty yards. Yeah, the bulls bedded out in the meadow.
- 27:07Speaker 1: I'm like maybe now ten fifteen yards from the edge
- 27:10Speaker 1: of the meadow, and I'm trying to get a shooting lane.
- 27:12Speaker 1: But I got some branches still in front of me,
- 27:14Speaker 1: and he's bedded, and he's kind of quartering away, and
- 27:17Speaker 1: there's a cow behind him, and it's getting dark. And
- 27:21Speaker 1: finally I stand up and I kind of moved to
- 27:23Speaker 1: my left and getting next to this tree, and I
- 27:25Speaker 1: just leaning against a tree. I still couldn't get the
- 27:27Speaker 1: angle I needed, but then I just brought my gun
- 27:30Speaker 1: up on this little branch and I kind of had
- 27:31Speaker 1: to almost get on my tippy toes and from there,
- 27:34Speaker 1: I had a clear sight path. Coincidentally, at the same time,
- 27:38Speaker 1: the one calf finally saw me going through all those
- 27:41Speaker 1: motions and she's sort of you know, bounced out a
- 27:44Speaker 1: little bit and it got everybody on their feet, and
- 27:46Speaker 1: once he got on his feet, it was I had
- 27:48Speaker 1: a you know, just a nice easy shooting lane. Yeah,
- 27:52Speaker 1: you know, I shot him, and hard to tell because everything.
- 27:59Speaker 1: It was late in the day and so I didn't
- 28:01Speaker 1: get to do a great neck crops knee crops knee
- 28:04Speaker 1: cropsy because it was dark out later, you know, so
- 28:08Speaker 1: it's hard to tell what happened. But the first shot
- 28:10Speaker 1: didn't bring him down, it stunned him. He was dead
- 28:12Speaker 1: on his feet. So I ran out after him. He
- 28:14Speaker 1: had gone maybe fifty yards and he was just facing away,
- 28:17Speaker 1: standing there, kind of wobbling, just ears pinned back, you know,
- 28:21Speaker 1: sick but not falling over, and um, I almost actually
- 28:25Speaker 1: just ran at him a little bit more or try
- 28:27Speaker 1: to change positions so I could get one in broadside,
- 28:29Speaker 1: and eventually he just he turned enough broadside that shot
- 28:32Speaker 1: again and that tipped him over. So yeah, it was sweet. Yeah,
- 28:38Speaker 1: he's a big adventure and the bull like tell him
- 28:42Speaker 1: how to go find you on because they'll be able
- 28:44Speaker 1: to find a picture of it on Instagram. Yeah, I
- 28:46Speaker 1: actually haven't. I need to post a um do a
- 28:49Speaker 1: little post about that hunt. But I'll have it up
- 28:52Speaker 1: there by the time you guys listen to this. But
- 28:54Speaker 1: it's uh my handles your honest underscore to tell us. Um.
- 29:00Speaker 1: But he's got a cool main beam that at his force,
- 29:03Speaker 1: it almost does a hard ninety both main beams, and
- 29:06Speaker 1: they almost come back together. The tips are probably only
- 29:09Speaker 1: I don't know, what do you think ten twelve inches apart? Yeah?
- 29:13Speaker 1: If that so? Yeah, Uh, quick thing remember we Oh
- 29:20Speaker 1: you weren't there and you haven't listened the We had
- 29:23Speaker 1: an emergency room doctor talking about all kinds of things
- 29:25Speaker 1: that bad things that happened to hunters and anglers. And
- 29:28Speaker 1: he suggested that when you bust your tooth off and
- 29:31Speaker 1: the nerves hanging out and it hurts real bad, do
- 29:34Speaker 1: you put um super glue on there to seal it
- 29:38Speaker 1: up so that so the air isn't touching it. My dentist,
- 29:42Speaker 1: Kevin said, man, don't do that, creep piece of feedback. Uh,
- 29:48Speaker 1: he didn't have an alternative. He said, you're gonna wind
- 29:52Speaker 1: up gluing your lip to your tooth, your lips to
- 29:54Speaker 1: your lip. He just thought it sounded like not smart.
- 29:59Speaker 1: Those things can hurt, they hurt. I would let you
- 30:03Speaker 1: administer that, because, especially if it was a top to
- 30:06Speaker 1: youth and you're just trying to squirt super blue up
- 30:08Speaker 1: in there, you would end up do it very delicately.
- 30:12Speaker 1: I'd lay it in there, just perfect to yourself, do
- 30:16Speaker 1: you That's what I'm saying. I wouldn't want to do
- 30:19Speaker 1: it to myself because you can't see you. I would
- 30:21Speaker 1: end up not know. We're eating talking about director for day.
- 30:25Speaker 1: So Peterlans will tell everybody where you're from. I'm from Tampa, Florida,
- 30:28Speaker 1: still live there today, but you play playing for the
- 30:32Speaker 1: New York Mets. UH live in Manhattan and UH for
- 30:37Speaker 1: the summer. I live in UH live in New York City,
- 30:40Speaker 1: just twenty four years old. Played in high school, YEP,
- 30:46Speaker 1: played in college, left college of playing the miners. He
- 30:51Speaker 1: was trying to say, he couldn't tell you were trying
- 30:53Speaker 1: to You were saying, I don't know if I should
- 30:54Speaker 1: say I'm auld dropout or what were you asking? I
- 30:57Speaker 1: didn't know if I wanted to tell people that I
- 31:00Speaker 1: got my degree from college in baseball, or that I
- 31:03Speaker 1: was a college dropout baseball. And I said that what
- 31:06Speaker 1: you should say is you left college to play professional baseball. Yeah,
- 31:11Speaker 1: I think that that one sounds the best out of
- 31:15Speaker 1: all the options. I think that one sounds good. You
- 31:17Speaker 1: told me you were a dropout. Yeah, I think it's
- 31:19Speaker 1: kind of funny. True. My old man dropped out of
- 31:23Speaker 1: high school to go fight in World War Two. I
- 31:28Speaker 1: mean that's bad. I don't think it's like, yeah, I
- 31:29Speaker 1: don't think it's just I wouldn't say he's a dropout
- 31:32Speaker 1: right because it's a it's kind of like a bigger
- 31:36Speaker 1: life calling or your journey, your your journey of life
- 31:39Speaker 1: that you guess you kind of go on. So you
- 31:42Speaker 1: knew you were gonna Like at what point you know
- 31:44Speaker 1: you're gonna be a professional ball player, Steve, I had
- 31:48Speaker 1: no plan b at all, Like from like, believe it
- 31:52Speaker 1: or not. My first word as like a baby was ball.
- 31:56Speaker 1: That was my first word. Yeah, you know, I don't
- 31:59Speaker 1: want to pop your bowl, but that's a That was
- 32:02Speaker 1: my first word. But for me, it's it's kind of
- 32:05Speaker 1: fitting um. And I'm only joking with you like that. Yeah,
- 32:09Speaker 1: I mean for me, it fits. And I mean when
- 32:13Speaker 1: I was younger, um, from preschool all the way throughout
- 32:18Speaker 1: high school, like every single level of my life, I've
- 32:22Speaker 1: always wanted to be a professional baseball player, and I
- 32:25Speaker 1: dedicated all my energy, my time, um to uh to
- 32:31Speaker 1: be a big league ball player. That's were your parents
- 32:34Speaker 1: were your parents Like, oh, enough already with the baseball. No.
- 32:39Speaker 1: I mean I played I played like five sports one year. Um.
- 32:43Speaker 1: I mean in middle school, I played lacrosse, football, soccer, basketball,
- 32:47Speaker 1: and baseball. I mean I feel like in the sports world,
- 32:50Speaker 1: like I grew up playing a bunch of different sports.
- 32:52Speaker 1: I mean I tried a lot of them. I love
- 32:55Speaker 1: I love sports, I love outdoor activities. UM. But for me,
- 33:00Speaker 1: it's like my true passion and love is um is baseball.
- 33:05Speaker 1: And I'm just really fortunate that I get to pay.
- 33:08Speaker 1: I get paid to play a game. When you started
- 33:13Speaker 1: in college, I'm not really fromiling how this goes. You're
- 33:16Speaker 1: in college, it's better to be it's And also someone
- 33:20Speaker 1: says that you can come be in the minor leagues
- 33:23Speaker 1: and that's preferable to play in college. That's like a
- 33:25Speaker 1: step closer. Well, it kind of depends, like, um, you
- 33:30Speaker 1: can get drafted out of high school, UM at eighteen
- 33:33Speaker 1: years old. But the downside of that, if you're not UH,
- 33:38Speaker 1: if you're not giving or offered UH, like money, you
- 33:42Speaker 1: can't refuse, Like if you're offered a million dollars to
- 33:45Speaker 1: turn down the college experience UH to go play professional baseball.
- 33:49Speaker 1: I mean, at the end of the day, it's, UM,
- 33:51Speaker 1: you want to be in the big leagues. Like you
- 33:53Speaker 1: can dream of playing for the college you grew up for,
- 33:56Speaker 1: but at the end of the day, you want to
- 33:58Speaker 1: end up in the in the show, you end up
- 34:00Speaker 1: the big leagues. UM. But for me, it's like I
- 34:02Speaker 1: wasn't drafted out of high school. I didn't really have
- 34:05Speaker 1: that option to go play professional baseball at eighteen years old.
- 34:09Speaker 1: So for me, I kinda I mean, if I if
- 34:13Speaker 1: someone says I'm not good enough at something, I I
- 34:17Speaker 1: take it personally, and I work harder and I try
- 34:21Speaker 1: and shows as much as the results as possible to
- 34:25Speaker 1: UM to put myself in that position to get that chance.
- 34:29Speaker 1: If if that would make sense. So when I went
- 34:31Speaker 1: into college, UM, I just wanted to make the most
- 34:35Speaker 1: of my time so I could have a chance at
- 34:39Speaker 1: the big leagues. And I didn't care how like if
- 34:43Speaker 1: I had to go through the minors or not. And
- 34:46Speaker 1: I mean, whatever the path I had to take, I
- 34:48Speaker 1: had to take to get there, and I'm willing to
- 34:50Speaker 1: put in whatever work and whatever time is needed to
- 34:54Speaker 1: uh succeed or to accomplish the goal. You're getting married,
- 34:58Speaker 1: uh coming up right? Yeah? Next year? Ye? Or you
- 35:01Speaker 1: getting married a year from now. Yes. When you met
- 35:03Speaker 1: your girlfriend, you were doing what so. I was in
- 35:07Speaker 1: um so, I was in college. UM at the time,
- 35:09Speaker 1: I was playing in the Cape Cod League and um
- 35:13Speaker 1: we met at Pete Town. It is kind of funny.
- 35:17Speaker 1: I mean it's it's not really a place where some
- 35:20Speaker 1: people go to meet meet ladies, and it's kind of serendipity,
- 35:24Speaker 1: you know. It's like I after we met and it's
- 35:27Speaker 1: like I just couldn't get enough of her, and we
- 35:30Speaker 1: hung out every single day for the rest of that summer.
- 35:33Speaker 1: We did long distance um our last year's of school
- 35:36Speaker 1: and UM as soon as um as soon as she graduated.
- 35:41Speaker 1: It's Cape Cod. Sorry, put the tenner ups. Cape Cod
- 35:43Speaker 1: is not known as a place town. It's a place
- 35:47Speaker 1: where guys would go to meet guys. Oh that specific beach,
- 35:50Speaker 1: That specific beach yeah, so the reason why could figure
- 35:54Speaker 1: out why he was getting cat called. So the reason
- 35:56Speaker 1: why we were at that beach. I mean, it's said,
- 36:01Speaker 1: long story short, I didn't being from Florida, It's like,
- 36:04Speaker 1: I don't. I don't like rocks and wearing shoes on
- 36:08Speaker 1: the beach. You know what I mean. I like white, fluffy,
- 36:11Speaker 1: sandy beaches and reminiscent of home. Yeah, reminiscent. I mean,
- 36:15Speaker 1: who likes wearing shoes on the beach. I don't think
- 36:18Speaker 1: any of it's just rocks on the shot. You won't
- 36:20Speaker 1: like the beaches at Steve's cabin, dude, Yeah, the barnacles, man,
- 36:25Speaker 1: you got rocks with barnacles. You don't have to wear shoes.
- 36:28Speaker 1: You have to wear waiters and uh and rubber boots
- 36:32Speaker 1: the whole time I got you. You want to have
- 36:35Speaker 1: a beach experience? Yeah? And then are you able to
- 36:39Speaker 1: concentrate while eating mars you know, cherries out of my glass? Absolutely? Absolutely?
- 36:46Speaker 1: But um yeah, it's like she's uh, she's just so unbelievable,
- 36:51Speaker 1: Like and did she believe you? Like you're like, oh,
- 36:56Speaker 1: I'm gonna be a professional baseball player? Was she like okay? Whatever?
- 37:02Speaker 1: I don't think she said like whatever, Um, I think,
- 37:06Speaker 1: I mean I think that she would have that didn't
- 37:09Speaker 1: matter what I did. I think. I mean she told me,
- 37:12Speaker 1: I mean she told her dad that she would have
- 37:16Speaker 1: dated me if I pumped gas for a living, So like,
- 37:19Speaker 1: I don't think he was necessarily the what I did. Um,
- 37:23Speaker 1: I think it's just the chemistry and the relationship. I mean,
- 37:26Speaker 1: she's she's awesome. She's my soul mate. I mean, I
- 37:28Speaker 1: can't picture going through life without her because I mean
- 37:33Speaker 1: she's I mean, she's my rock, like she keeps I mean,
- 37:37Speaker 1: she's a sports psychologist, like she's everything and more. I mean,
- 37:42Speaker 1: and for how much like we travel and like I mean,
- 37:45Speaker 1: we don't really live anywhere for more than seven seven
- 37:49Speaker 1: days at a time during during the baseball season, and
- 37:53Speaker 1: it's like you go through the apartment, you go to
- 37:54Speaker 1: the hotel, like there's no sense of home. And sometimes
- 37:58Speaker 1: like I get h I'm not gonna say jealous, but
- 38:01Speaker 1: I kind of wish I knew what it was like
- 38:03Speaker 1: to have like a like a home for like an
- 38:05Speaker 1: extended period of time, because like packing and traveling a lot,
- 38:11Speaker 1: it gets gets kind of exhausting, you know, and you're
- 38:14Speaker 1: going home with a bunch of deer meat. Now I'm
- 38:16Speaker 1: excited and and you don't have any concerns that she's
- 38:18Speaker 1: gonna she's gonna eat the deer meat. Oh, she's she's
- 38:21Speaker 1: gonna love it. I think I'm a I think I'm
- 38:24Speaker 1: I'm a pretty good cook. Um. I learned. I learned
- 38:27Speaker 1: a lot of stuff from my grandpa. Um, well, the
- 38:31Speaker 1: one from the one from Spain. He can he could,
- 38:34Speaker 1: he could whip up anything. And just kind of watching
- 38:36Speaker 1: him navigate the kitchen, utilize all the different spices, um
- 38:41Speaker 1: and different creative ways like to bring out the best
- 38:44Speaker 1: of the food. I think that, Um, I can do that.
- 38:47Speaker 1: I can do this. Dear meat Justice either one that
- 38:50Speaker 1: taught you the cinnamon trick. No, actually so a buddy
- 38:54Speaker 1: of mine. His name is Vince. He's one of my
- 38:56Speaker 1: best buddies. Uh. He went out to Houston, UH to
- 39:01Speaker 1: visit one of our really good friends. He plays for
- 39:04Speaker 1: the Houston Astros. His name is Lansper Colors and Dallas
- 39:08Speaker 1: Kikl was his teammate. And Dallas Kikl is like just
- 39:12Speaker 1: an absolute hardcore Texan like Breede lives breathe Texas and
- 39:18Speaker 1: he used he uses like cinnamon on like red meat,
- 39:23Speaker 1: and Vince brought it back and uh, we went over. Um,
- 39:28Speaker 1: me and my fiance and him and his wife are
- 39:31Speaker 1: really good friends. We went over to dinner for their
- 39:33Speaker 1: house one night. He was growing steaks. He was putting cinema.
- 39:36Speaker 1: I'm like, dude, what the hell are you doing. He's like,
- 39:39Speaker 1: shut up, just try it, Just wait till I'm done,
- 39:42Speaker 1: and try it. And I'm like, oh my god, this
- 39:45Speaker 1: is unbelievable. And so I I kind of adopted it,
- 39:49Speaker 1: and um brought it to you guys. Yeah, we did.
- 39:52Speaker 1: We liked so much. We had it twice this week. Uh,
- 39:56Speaker 1: tell everybody what high ask means. So in the baseball world,
- 40:01Speaker 1: it's my new favorite term. So that's why Pete likes
- 40:03Speaker 1: mildeers milder. He got a mild your buck he felt
- 40:07Speaker 1: had a high as So a high ask means just
- 40:10Speaker 1: a just a big, powerful, muscular butt. And in the
- 40:14Speaker 1: baseball in the baseball world, if you have a high ask,
- 40:17Speaker 1: that means that you're probably a strong guy, like strong
- 40:21Speaker 1: and athletic and you could probably hit a ball for
- 40:24Speaker 1: pretty far. Your I mean, you gotta have a lot
- 40:27Speaker 1: of asks to hit the ball. Oh damn, right, man,
- 40:29Speaker 1: When I hit a ball, it doesn't really go anywhere. Man,
- 40:32Speaker 1: It's always kind of embarrassing. Well, you gotta you have
- 40:35Speaker 1: to act like I'm not interested, I'm playing. You have
- 40:38Speaker 1: to figure for baseball tea, Steve. You gotta put your
- 40:41Speaker 1: ass into it. That's the thing. That's why you gotta
- 40:43Speaker 1: have a high as not not enough of an ass
- 40:45Speaker 1: Yanny what I tell you earlier about oh, chocolate milk
- 40:51Speaker 1: and squats, You need to get on that training program, Steve. Yeah,
- 40:56Speaker 1: you know what happened one time, man um the last
- 41:00Speaker 1: real heavy duty bit of chocolate milk I got, I
- 41:03Speaker 1: had a lot of gastrow and testinal upset. This is
- 41:06Speaker 1: many years ago, but it turned me off on it. Okay,
- 41:10Speaker 1: turn me off on chocolate milk. And now but I
- 41:12Speaker 1: look at chocolate milk and I get leary. Well, I mean,
- 41:15Speaker 1: there's is it like with the girl I had just
- 41:18Speaker 1: started dating, and there I was sneak off every couple
- 41:24Speaker 1: minutes trying to figure out what was going on? Were
- 41:28Speaker 1: you farting in her in her bathroom towels? It was
- 41:31Speaker 1: just horrible, man, It's horrible, as my my the writer
- 41:35Speaker 1: Ian Fraser put it once he talked about it, sounded
- 41:39Speaker 1: like he was yodeling. He was yodeling in the bathroom.
- 41:48Speaker 1: So now that chocolate milk man, you look at it
- 41:52Speaker 1: like I look at it with great suspicion. Is it
- 41:54Speaker 1: a dairy thing? Well, just a fluke. I was real sick.
- 41:57Speaker 1: I got real sick overseas God, and I was just
- 42:01Speaker 1: not right for quite a long time. Seth had that. Yeah,
- 42:05Speaker 1: Seth was sick for uh at least a year. He
- 42:09Speaker 1: couldn't even date. He had the ship so bad he
- 42:12Speaker 1: had to take a year off dating was still on
- 42:16Speaker 1: this day. Have no clue, was it really? Did you
- 42:18Speaker 1: go to coastu Ecer? No, No, they had him. They
- 42:22Speaker 1: had him, just no, they had him. They had him
- 42:25Speaker 1: peg for like a real serious look affliction Crone's disease. Yeah,
- 42:30Speaker 1: but it just went away one day. I woke up
- 42:33Speaker 1: and was gone. He woke up, had a nice solid
- 42:37Speaker 1: and it was gone. Stressed for a year, couldn't date,
- 42:41Speaker 1: couldn't even date? Were you stressed out? I mean before
- 42:45Speaker 1: do you think stress was Did he look stressed out?
- 42:48Speaker 1: I don't think I was stressed one time of life?
- 42:51Speaker 1: What else was going on in your life at the time? Oh,
- 42:54Speaker 1: come on, talk me through this he had was in college.
- 43:01Speaker 1: This is the worst time ever leave alone, geez. So
- 43:07Speaker 1: I asked the powerful ass strong power for lass. Yes,
- 43:12Speaker 1: typically when you have a strong power for last, you
- 43:14Speaker 1: have strong legs and in like athletic ability and that
- 43:21Speaker 1: they'll look for that. Absolutely. So when you started playing baseball?
- 43:27Speaker 1: How did it come to? Because I want to trying
- 43:28Speaker 1: to get around to is how you won the home
- 43:30Speaker 1: run Derby and that's how I found and that's and
- 43:32Speaker 1: then you took the opportunity to express interest in going hunting,
- 43:35Speaker 1: which is pretty funny. Well, so the home run derby
- 43:39Speaker 1: soles telling people what you get when you win the
- 43:41Speaker 1: home run Derby. No, no, that's two questions. You're you're
- 43:44Speaker 1: asking three questions at once. Which one? So first question,
- 43:48Speaker 1: how did I start playing baseball? Oh? No, no, we're
- 43:50Speaker 1: told us how you started playing baseball? Okay, so what
- 43:54Speaker 1: what was the what was the second question? I just
- 43:56Speaker 1: kind of like the all of sting you made it,
- 43:58Speaker 1: and you're like you're in the get in the major league,
- 44:01Speaker 1: Like here you are, yeah, and you're in the major leagues.
- 44:05Speaker 1: And then the home run Derby comes up? Yeah, so
- 44:08Speaker 1: I got the uh, I got the official invite I
- 44:11Speaker 1: got the call from uh one of the people from
- 44:14Speaker 1: the Major League Baseball Office asking if I was gonna
- 44:17Speaker 1: do it. It's like, would you like to participate? No, ship,
- 44:20Speaker 1: I would like to participate. This is like a like
- 44:23Speaker 1: that's like the one night a summer my parents let
- 44:26Speaker 1: me stay up late at night to watch like I have,
- 44:30Speaker 1: Like I grew up watching the Homer and Derby. Like
- 44:32Speaker 1: I never watched the All Star Game. I watched the
- 44:34Speaker 1: Homer and Derby. That was like my thing because I
- 44:37Speaker 1: was just in awe of like just how far these
- 44:41Speaker 1: guys would just punish these baseballs, Like you just just
- 44:44Speaker 1: absolutely disintegrate these uh like these baseballs into the night
- 44:49Speaker 1: and it's just like it is majestic almost. It's it
- 44:52Speaker 1: was really cool and um and to be honestly, I
- 44:56Speaker 1: didn't even know what I was saying, Like after the
- 44:59Speaker 1: Homer and Derby, I would just like black like it
- 45:02Speaker 1: was all like just this blur like I had, Like
- 45:05Speaker 1: I remember like my cousin. My cousin was the guy
- 45:09Speaker 1: that thrown me BP or batting practice. He was the
- 45:11Speaker 1: one throwing me the pitches and after I hit it,
- 45:15Speaker 1: I remember just chucking my bad as far as I
- 45:18Speaker 1: could in the air, and my cousin just jumped on me. Um.
- 45:22Speaker 1: And then after that, I was just Daddy Yankee like
- 45:25Speaker 1: put a chain on me. Do you guys know who
- 45:27Speaker 1: Daddy Yankee is. He's like some really fame. He's like
- 45:30Speaker 1: a famous Latin rapper. Like he put like this, like
- 45:33Speaker 1: the Homer and Derby championship chain on me. I got
- 45:35Speaker 1: hinted the trophy and then it's like, holy sh it,
- 45:39Speaker 1: what do I do now? Sorry, the fact that your
- 45:42Speaker 1: cousin was pitching, he seems a little suspicious. Or did
- 45:45Speaker 1: you get to choose that? I chose that. Yeah. Oh
- 45:47Speaker 1: so everybody gets to choose their picture. Yeah. Yeah, so
- 45:51Speaker 1: they're they're throwing you pitch is meant to be hit? Yes, exactly.
- 45:55Speaker 1: And um, my cousin grew up playing baseball. He played
- 45:59Speaker 1: he played D one college baseball, uh St Bonaventurely, I'm
- 46:02Speaker 1: not sure if you guys know where that is upstate
- 46:05Speaker 1: New York. Um, but yeah, he we both kind of
- 46:08Speaker 1: grew up around the game. And um, it was in Cleveland,
- 46:11Speaker 1: and he's, um, he's from the Cleveland area, and I
- 46:16Speaker 1: just like, you know what, and both my parents are
- 46:18Speaker 1: from Ohio, so this is It was kind of like
- 46:21Speaker 1: a whole like homecoming family reunion type thing. And I
- 46:26Speaker 1: was just like, what how crazy would this be just
- 46:29Speaker 1: to like have this moment with Uh. I mean, there's
- 46:32Speaker 1: there's a ton of family members there, and to have
- 46:35Speaker 1: my cousin Derek like throw to me. Was just yeah,
- 46:39Speaker 1: you couldn't dream You couldn't dream it up better. I mean,
- 46:42Speaker 1: and you win a million dollars? Yeah, yeah, Wait, how
- 46:48Speaker 1: many homers did you hit in the in the derby?
- 46:51Speaker 1: So I hit fourteen, uh to knock off Santana, I
- 46:55Speaker 1: hit twenty to knock off a Kunia, and I hit
- 46:57Speaker 1: twenty three to knockoff lad Jr. So were any of
- 47:01Speaker 1: those guys rookies? Um? Vladi was and Santana is a
- 47:07Speaker 1: season vet and a Kunya was a rookie last year
- 47:10Speaker 1: signed he was rookie the year last year. So all
- 47:12Speaker 1: those guys are very well respected um in the game
- 47:16Speaker 1: of baseball. And yeah, came out on top. It was,
- 47:22Speaker 1: I mean, and then when I got the got the
- 47:25Speaker 1: interview or when the interview thing, it is just like
- 47:27Speaker 1: all this everything happened so fast, like my family's coming
- 47:31Speaker 1: on the field. Um, Like I I was like holding
- 47:36Speaker 1: back tears. Like the entire time, I was just so
- 47:39Speaker 1: just like wow, like because coming into spring training, I
- 47:43Speaker 1: didn't know if I was going to be playing in
- 47:45Speaker 1: the big leagues and then here I am two and
- 47:48Speaker 1: a half three months later, like wanting the home on derby.
- 47:51Speaker 1: It's like this ship doesn't even make sense to me.
- 47:53Speaker 1: It's like I was living a dream, Like it happened
- 47:56Speaker 1: so fast. And then the interview came up, and I
- 47:59Speaker 1: was just like, I mean, I'm a big fan of
- 48:02Speaker 1: meat eater, Like I watched, Yeah, what question did the
- 48:05Speaker 1: interviewer ask you? How did how did you? So this
- 48:09Speaker 1: is this is how two things happen. So he's like,
- 48:12Speaker 1: so you made the big leagues out of spring training,
- 48:15Speaker 1: You're you're an All Star as a rookie. Like, you
- 48:17Speaker 1: just won the home run derby. You get a million dollars,
- 48:19Speaker 1: you get the you get the trophy, you get the chain.
- 48:22Speaker 1: And he said you got to meet Jerry Seinfeld, which
- 48:24Speaker 1: is weird. Is that something you ask for? No? He
- 48:27Speaker 1: Jerry Seinfeld is just a big New York Mets fan,
- 48:30Speaker 1: um and he was at one of the games and
- 48:32Speaker 1: me and him talk for a while. He's he's a
- 48:35Speaker 1: hilarious dude, what did you guys talk about? Um, It's
- 48:39Speaker 1: it's kind of funny because like my dad, uh, my
- 48:42Speaker 1: dad was a huge Seinfeld fan and it is just
- 48:45Speaker 1: and I was like, dude, like my dad, I remember
- 48:47Speaker 1: my dad's sitting me down and making me watch shows
- 48:50Speaker 1: of you. Like I'm like, it's crazy that He's like,
- 48:54Speaker 1: I'm such a huge fan, and I'm like, how how
- 48:56Speaker 1: are you a fan of me? Like that dude is
- 48:58Speaker 1: like a like a legit ogl in New York. And
- 49:01Speaker 1: it's like, like, I don't I couldn't understand that he
- 49:05Speaker 1: Jerry Seinfeld liked Jerry Seinfeld was a fan of me.
- 49:08Speaker 1: I just like, there's a lot of things that happened
- 49:11Speaker 1: this year that I couldn't comprehend. He's like, and then
- 49:14Speaker 1: the guy said, or the ESPN guy, He's like, what
- 49:16Speaker 1: could possibly make this year better? And I'm like, I
- 49:18Speaker 1: go to go hunting with Steve Ronelle. It just it
- 49:21Speaker 1: just like came out. I didn't plan it. This wasn't it,
- 49:26Speaker 1: but all that other stuff. It's like it was it
- 49:31Speaker 1: was so funny. So many people said that to him.
- 49:34Speaker 1: Man like this people kept texting me to be like,
- 49:41Speaker 1: I mean, I just like when I watched your shows.
- 49:44Speaker 1: It's like, I love the way that you kind of
- 49:46Speaker 1: put things in in in perspective and you have kind
- 49:49Speaker 1: of like a certain way I mean you being a
- 49:51Speaker 1: writer and you just have a certain way with words
- 49:54Speaker 1: and describing things. Um. It's it puts a lot of
- 49:57Speaker 1: things in perspective. And the way that you kind to
- 50:00Speaker 1: treat um, not just not just the animals, but the
- 50:04Speaker 1: way you prepare um because I love what you do,
- 50:07Speaker 1: like especially with the cooking and the preparation of the food.
- 50:10Speaker 1: I mean me, I'm a huge food I love awesome
- 50:13Speaker 1: food and the way that you do try and do
- 50:16Speaker 1: the best justice you possibly can for the animal. Like
- 50:19Speaker 1: I have the utmost respect for that. And I mean
- 50:22Speaker 1: I kind of wanted to Like this trip was just
- 50:24Speaker 1: so special because I could be able to just kind
- 50:27Speaker 1: of watch and learn and um be I mean kind
- 50:30Speaker 1: of pick your brain a little bit. Um. I mean
- 50:33Speaker 1: there's kind of like I mean, after baseball and like
- 50:36Speaker 1: I'd love to do kind of something that you're doing. Um.
- 50:40Speaker 1: I mean this is like, I mean, baseball is of
- 50:43Speaker 1: the utmost priority, but I mean outdoors and and food
- 50:46Speaker 1: is is a huge passion of mine and I know
- 50:48Speaker 1: it is for you too, and uh, quite honestly, I
- 50:51Speaker 1: felt like we get along. Yeah, it was fun. Yeah.
- 50:55Speaker 1: So what we did just to bring people up speed
- 50:58Speaker 1: is a friend of mine has a ranch in Colorado
- 51:07Speaker 1: and he uses the ranch. Um he's been on that,
- 51:10Speaker 1: he's been Matt, he's been on the show a couple
- 51:12Speaker 1: of times. Um, he used the ranch like he hosts
- 51:16Speaker 1: wounded veterans to hunt on his ranch. He takes business clients, friends,
- 51:25Speaker 1: uses it for fun. Like I first came out here
- 51:27Speaker 1: to do a TRCP fundraiser. Like TRCP, Theodore Roosevelt Conservation
- 51:33Speaker 1: Partnership will auction off like last year they auctioned off
- 51:36Speaker 1: a deal where four people could come out too, could
- 51:39Speaker 1: hunt out and two could fish. And so I hunted
- 51:44Speaker 1: with Um. One of the guys Jana's hunting was another guy,
- 51:50Speaker 1: and then Cody is a what do you call yourself?
- 51:53Speaker 1: You're like a ranch manager? Yeah, hunt man, I don't
- 51:56Speaker 1: know that. Yeah. In addition to catching cattle and lines
- 52:00Speaker 1: and whatnot, jack of all trades. So we did these
- 52:03Speaker 1: this fundraiser hunt and it came out here and Matt has, uh,
- 52:08Speaker 1: if your own properties in Colorado, you can get these,
- 52:12Speaker 1: you get like these tag vouchers that you're able to use.
- 52:16Speaker 1: So we were able to very much like on the
- 52:19Speaker 1: spur of the moment, playing a hunt without needing to
- 52:23Speaker 1: do the applications to get a permit because we've got
- 52:27Speaker 1: the vouchers. So we came out to hunt deer and
- 52:31Speaker 1: then you were able to buy it over the counter.
- 52:33Speaker 1: ELK tag. Um, what all like when we came out
- 52:37Speaker 1: to do is what all were your expectations and and
- 52:41Speaker 1: like apprehensions and expectations. I mean I was I felt
- 52:45Speaker 1: like whatever it was gonna I mean, I was just
- 52:48Speaker 1: happy to be here. I just wanted to tag along
- 52:50Speaker 1: and um just kind of just kind of learn and Um,
- 52:55Speaker 1: I'm just I just feel really blessed to to to
- 52:58Speaker 1: be here. I mean, all you guys, this whole Metator team,
- 53:01Speaker 1: this whole Meteator experience was just um, I mean I'm
- 53:05Speaker 1: gonna remember this for us from my life. I mean,
- 53:07Speaker 1: this was absolutely fantastic. The boys boys are awesome, Like
- 53:11Speaker 1: you got a hell of a team, Steve, and like
- 53:14Speaker 1: you guys are are fucking awesome thanks to all you
- 53:19Speaker 1: guys um did when you were imagining it, Like you
- 53:23Speaker 1: played so now you play baseball and everything you do
- 53:26Speaker 1: is filmed, right, you're filming the game. It's being put
- 53:30Speaker 1: on as a spectator sport um. And like you the
- 53:36Speaker 1: way you're there to produce a thing that's watched, you
- 53:40Speaker 1: know whatever means that you personally like, that's what justifies
- 53:43Speaker 1: the whole thing is it's an audience participation thing. Um.
- 53:49Speaker 1: To know that you were gonna come and we're gonna
- 53:51Speaker 1: hunt and we're gonna film it for a television show.
- 53:54Speaker 1: Did that make it seem more Uh? Does that make
- 53:58Speaker 1: it seem more in line with how your life goes anyways?
- 54:03Speaker 1: Or did it feel like, Oh, I wish we weren't
- 54:05Speaker 1: doing that. I wish we were just going out for fun. No,
- 54:08Speaker 1: I mean if because for me, it's like in the
- 54:12Speaker 1: world of baseball, it's it's a game of failure, in
- 54:15Speaker 1: a game of disappointment. Like if you fail seventy percent
- 54:19Speaker 1: of the time throughout your entire career, you're more than
- 54:24Speaker 1: likely to end up in the Hall of Fame. Seventy
- 54:27Speaker 1: percent of the time you fail, And there's a lot
- 54:30Speaker 1: of cases where we need seventy percent of the time.
- 54:32Speaker 1: Like you get up to bat and you're out. Yeah,
- 54:36Speaker 1: that's what's funny. When I asked you, like, what happened
- 54:38Speaker 1: the first time you got out to bat in the
- 54:39Speaker 1: major leagues? You said, I struck out? Yeah, I struck out.
- 54:44Speaker 1: Did you strike out swinging? Are looking at it? I
- 54:48Speaker 1: struck out. I struck out swinging struck out. It was
- 54:51Speaker 1: against a three time Cy Young winner. So, um, what's that?
- 54:56Speaker 1: So that's like the m v P for for pictures.
- 55:00Speaker 1: He's a three time uh m v P for uh
- 55:03Speaker 1: for the pitching aspect of the game. So, I mean
- 55:05Speaker 1: he's so. The guy's name is Max schers Are. To
- 55:08Speaker 1: all you listeners, if you're from baseball world, you knew
- 55:11Speaker 1: exactly who he is. But uh, to the guys that
- 55:14Speaker 1: or guys and gals out there that aren't familiar with
- 55:17Speaker 1: the baseball, this guy is Um, this guy is tough.
- 55:20Speaker 1: I mean, this guy's probably uh probably gonna end up
- 55:23Speaker 1: being a Cooperstown, which is the Baseball Hall of Fame.
- 55:26Speaker 1: And uh, I respect the hell out of him. And um,
- 55:30Speaker 1: I mean this guy is just an absolute master of
- 55:32Speaker 1: of of the art of pitching. Are you looking forward
- 55:36Speaker 1: to facing him again? Oh? Yeah, I love competing. Have
- 55:39Speaker 1: you have you gotten a homer off from yet? Not
- 55:41Speaker 1: a homer but I got a couple of hits, got
- 55:44Speaker 1: a couple of hits, So they put that in your
- 55:46Speaker 1: pipe and smoke it. I guess so, Uh, we're really
- 55:53Speaker 1: leave off. I can't remember if I got distracted by
- 55:55Speaker 1: uh expectations. Oh yeah, was it weird to come out
- 56:00Speaker 1: like make a show where we were to be filmed?
- 56:03Speaker 1: Are you just so used to be in film though?
- 56:06Speaker 1: I mean I this year I get. I mean just
- 56:10Speaker 1: in real like going through like real life. It's like
- 56:13Speaker 1: I don't realize in being filmed like during uh during
- 56:17Speaker 1: the game, because I gotta be locked in on on
- 56:19Speaker 1: what I'm doing. I mean, the cameras are are just
- 56:22Speaker 1: kind of exterior stuff. Um. I mean for me, it's
- 56:26Speaker 1: like if I'm I'm just gonna be myself because at
- 56:29Speaker 1: the end of the day, that's um like I take
- 56:32Speaker 1: pride in knowing who I am. Like, like I told you,
- 56:35Speaker 1: what did I tell you about knowing something? Oh? Yeah,
- 56:38Speaker 1: I don't want to say it? Is that? Is that too? Uh?
- 56:43Speaker 1: Maybe may be honest it What do you want me
- 56:47Speaker 1: to say? I don't want to. Well, maybe you weren't there.
- 56:52Speaker 1: I'll tell you that, Okay, if it's not podcast friendly,
- 56:55Speaker 1: I won't say it. It's a it's a it's an
- 56:58Speaker 1: expression saying you need to know your your panga. Yeah
- 57:05Speaker 1: you're penga. Know you're you know what you're working with.
- 57:10Speaker 1: You know what you're working with, you, what your strengths are,
- 57:14Speaker 1: what your limitations are. No, know who you are. That's
- 57:18Speaker 1: that's the that's the g rated know who you are,
- 57:20Speaker 1: um and for me, doesn't doesn't pack the punch that
- 57:25Speaker 1: right now your panga um? And for me, like, I
- 57:29Speaker 1: feel like I'm really comfortable with who I am and
- 57:32Speaker 1: if someone else wants to have an opinion, then let
- 57:35Speaker 1: him have it, you know. And I mean that's whatever,
- 57:40Speaker 1: whatever happens and whatever people think of opinions like great,
- 57:44Speaker 1: But uh, are you kind of like the added pressures?
- 57:48Speaker 1: It's like for me, it's like I try and live
- 57:51Speaker 1: in the moment and whatever I can do to accomplish,
- 57:55Speaker 1: whether it be like putting a good shot on a
- 57:57Speaker 1: deer or hitting a baseball, it's um, it's honestly pretty similar,
- 58:01Speaker 1: pretty similar type of type of pressures. What was your
- 58:05Speaker 1: favorite thing about what's your favorite thing about? Hunt Milder?
- 58:12Speaker 1: I know you like the moments when we were looking
- 58:14Speaker 1: at them. Yeah, I mean I just think they're they're
- 58:18Speaker 1: just incredible creatures. Also, it's like I think the mesmerizing thing,
- 58:22Speaker 1: like they're really cool to look at, but also that
- 58:24Speaker 1: they could disappear at the blink of an eye, Like
- 58:27Speaker 1: if you're glass and you see them and then let's
- 58:29Speaker 1: say you like let's say you kind of just move
- 58:32Speaker 1: around to adjust or whatever, and then you look back
- 58:35Speaker 1: in that same spot, they could be gone and to
- 58:37Speaker 1: split second. I mean, these creatures are just um, I mean,
- 58:41Speaker 1: I have just this utmost respect for him. I mean
- 58:44Speaker 1: they're almost perfect. They're almost perfect this trip, and their
- 58:51Speaker 1: camouflage really well, they're really just super aware of their environment.
- 58:55Speaker 1: And um, I mean there. I mean it's a great challenge.
- 59:00Speaker 1: I mean, I mean we hunted really hard these five days.
- 59:03Speaker 1: Am I right? I would say we did. We had
- 59:06Speaker 1: some obstacles, Yeah, I think that. Um Cody bat me
- 59:11Speaker 1: up on this. Like it's like like Colorado does like
- 59:14Speaker 1: the first season so it's week long, then there's some
- 59:16Speaker 1: days off, and the second seasons a week long and
- 59:18Speaker 1: there's days off, and the third season is and I
- 59:21Speaker 1: think you get like a sort of like added up.
- 59:25Speaker 1: It's a lot of pressure. You're right, You're exactly right.
- 59:29Speaker 1: And things get skittish, and it's compounded, you know, throughout
- 59:32Speaker 1: the season until later the season. You're right, and we
- 59:35Speaker 1: had the chance we'd come out, and we thought, oh, well,
- 59:37Speaker 1: come out and they'll be routting and chase each other
- 59:39Speaker 1: around playing grab bass. Not even kind of none of that. Uh.
- 59:44Speaker 1: And then two nice the weather, which is wonderful to
- 59:47Speaker 1: be out and but just isn't like that's what you're
- 59:50Speaker 1: really hoping for, I think in Colorado's third rifle season,
- 59:53Speaker 1: because that's why most people don't come and hunt it
- 59:56Speaker 1: and come in second season instead. It's because they like
- 59:58Speaker 1: this weather. They don't want get their teeth by the way.
- 1:00:01Speaker 1: Out of locals at least where when I was living
- 1:00:03Speaker 1: called all the locals all hunted third because they would
- 1:00:06Speaker 1: expect the weather to come in and then put the
- 1:00:09Speaker 1: animals out into the open. We did not have that,
- 1:00:13Speaker 1: or a little migration. We had a little pre migration
- 1:00:15Speaker 1: before you guys showed up, but you know, you were
- 1:00:19Speaker 1: still in a lot of deer. There's still a lot
- 1:00:21Speaker 1: of deer up high. Yeah. It was tough, man, It
- 1:00:25Speaker 1: was tough, but worst case, worst comes to worst. We
- 1:00:28Speaker 1: we didn't shoot anything and got to watch a beautiful
- 1:00:31Speaker 1: sunset or sunrise? What would you have thought about that
- 1:00:34Speaker 1: if you didn't get one, if I didn't get one. Um,
- 1:00:38Speaker 1: I know hunting, there's no guarantee for success. Um, same
- 1:00:41Speaker 1: thing with baseball. You're not gonna get a hit every time.
- 1:00:44Speaker 1: And I feel like even though like our worlds are
- 1:00:48Speaker 1: so different, but the expectation of success isn't like just
- 1:00:54Speaker 1: just had to snap of a finger like that can't
- 1:00:56Speaker 1: be guaranteed. Like, you gotta work, You gotta work for
- 1:00:59Speaker 1: your success. You gotta put yourself, you gotta prepare, you
- 1:01:02Speaker 1: gotta put yourself in the right position to have that
- 1:01:05Speaker 1: great opportunity. Like am I is that? Just like keep
- 1:01:12Speaker 1: keep putting yourself in positions. That's the thing now, And
- 1:01:16Speaker 1: then I'll think about is um at a point just
- 1:01:21Speaker 1: this matter of like staying out, being out, you know,
- 1:01:26Speaker 1: you keep being out Like tonight we sat that same
- 1:01:28Speaker 1: we set, the same metal night that we sat five
- 1:01:30Speaker 1: nights in a row. It's still no buck showed up
- 1:01:33Speaker 1: out there. But I'm thinking, like, how many nights could
- 1:01:35Speaker 1: you actually sit here and not have just like not
- 1:01:37Speaker 1: have one just like a lost one comes through. Yeah,
- 1:01:41Speaker 1: we saw we saw those tonight that we had never
- 1:01:44Speaker 1: seen the whole time we sat there, and then night
- 1:01:48Speaker 1: before tonight last night we saw, didn't you see a
- 1:01:52Speaker 1: couple of days last night one one. It's not like
- 1:01:55Speaker 1: they weren't dear there. It's just that opportunity that, like you,
- 1:01:59Speaker 1: we put ourselves in position. It's just that nature just didn't.
- 1:02:03Speaker 1: That wasn't in the cards. But you know, it's funny
- 1:02:05Speaker 1: as we went up because when I was down here
- 1:02:07Speaker 1: doing the TRCP fundraiser during second season, Brody comes on
- 1:02:11Speaker 1: the show, a lot was down and he went up
- 1:02:14Speaker 1: and scouted that area in all kinds of bucks, and
- 1:02:19Speaker 1: then Matt Cook looked at it, all kinds of bucks.
- 1:02:26Speaker 1: We go up there the first night, we go there
- 1:02:28Speaker 1: and here's four bucks. And I kind of thought him
- 1:02:31Speaker 1: as I thought him was like money in the bank.
- 1:02:35Speaker 1: I wasn't even kind of thinking about going. I wasn't like,
- 1:02:38Speaker 1: is that why we didn't go after Sapphire that first night?
- 1:02:40Speaker 1: Well it wasn't that. It was that, you know, if
- 1:02:42Speaker 1: it had come in range, absolutely, but I was like,
- 1:02:45Speaker 1: no sense in spooking it, no sense in doing a
- 1:02:47Speaker 1: hasty stock. We'll set up better tomorrow and get them
- 1:02:54Speaker 1: and not spook them not knowing that we would never
- 1:02:57Speaker 1: lay eyes on that thing. Again, very true, but that's
- 1:03:01Speaker 1: the that's the thing though, I mean, same same thing
- 1:03:04Speaker 1: with baseball. You could get an absolute meatball right down
- 1:03:07Speaker 1: the middle and not see and expect to see it
- 1:03:10Speaker 1: later on and that at that or expected to see
- 1:03:13Speaker 1: later on the game. But if the picture doesn't give
- 1:03:15Speaker 1: it to you, it's I mean, then you're sl And
- 1:03:18Speaker 1: I mean it's kind of the same thing for us.
- 1:03:21Speaker 1: It's like we thought we were gonna see at least
- 1:03:24Speaker 1: one for the for the remainder of the trip. But
- 1:03:27Speaker 1: I mean it's not like we didn't work hard for it,
- 1:03:31Speaker 1: you know, No, five days, haunted every morning, early every
- 1:03:38Speaker 1: night till the end, um and then had that one
- 1:03:41Speaker 1: not quite opportunity and then scratch it out and got opportunity. Yeah,
- 1:03:48Speaker 1: how did you feel that happen? Like, how did you feel?
- 1:03:50Speaker 1: Like all of a sudden, like we're me going like,
- 1:03:52Speaker 1: oh my god, get up, get up, get up, got hup?
- 1:03:55Speaker 1: What's wrong? Well, you didn't care, that's the problem. Yeah,
- 1:04:01Speaker 1: that's the problem. Um, what's the problem. Yeah, so you
- 1:04:06Speaker 1: didn't crumple under then you weren't even influenced by my pressure. No,
- 1:04:11Speaker 1: he had that good saying earlier. Was it the Navy,
- 1:04:14Speaker 1: he said, of the Marines that have that saying, yeah,
- 1:04:16Speaker 1: it's in the um in the military. It's like slow
- 1:04:19Speaker 1: slow as smooth and smooth it's fast. And that's that's
- 1:04:24Speaker 1: kind of my um my method to hitting and my
- 1:04:27Speaker 1: approach to to the game of baseball, whether it be
- 1:04:30Speaker 1: offensively or defensively, because you have to be under under
- 1:04:34Speaker 1: control of the situation in order to capitalize. And I
- 1:04:40Speaker 1: I mean, thank you Seth for spotting it first of all, um,
- 1:04:44Speaker 1: and I'll spot bucks for you any day, Pete. And
- 1:04:48Speaker 1: then uh, Steve is like helping me direct kind of
- 1:04:51Speaker 1: where to where to aim on the scope and and
- 1:04:53Speaker 1: where to to Um was it the magnification and stuff
- 1:04:58Speaker 1: like that. I Mean, this wasn't just like yes, I
- 1:05:01Speaker 1: shot it, but this was like like a team effort.
- 1:05:03Speaker 1: There was a lot of different people involved in in
- 1:05:07Speaker 1: the in in that success. Um. Yeah, we got up there,
- 1:05:12Speaker 1: we had a little bit. It was like we got
- 1:05:14Speaker 1: up that morning, we got befour. Yeah, we got up
- 1:05:16Speaker 1: a little early, and I had a pop tart. You
- 1:05:19Speaker 1: had a pop tart And I keep blaming my pop tart,
- 1:05:21Speaker 1: but I had a pop tart for breakfast in a
- 1:05:23Speaker 1: coffee Did you put too much or did you putting
- 1:05:26Speaker 1: on enough cream in your coffee? So you had too
- 1:05:28Speaker 1: much caffeine and too much man, Like, I'm pretty I'm
- 1:05:31Speaker 1: not like a fragile person. You were that more. I know.
- 1:05:35Speaker 1: We had a little hike. We had got a four,
- 1:05:37Speaker 1: had a pop tart, had a little hike and we
- 1:05:39Speaker 1: got into where we wanted to be and I was
- 1:05:41Speaker 1: shaking so bad I couldn't hold my binoculars up. So
- 1:05:44Speaker 1: I had to take a time out and lay on
- 1:05:46Speaker 1: the ground and told Seth was there to film. I
- 1:05:49Speaker 1: was like, you gotta come up in glass, man, I
- 1:05:51Speaker 1: can't even and I laid down. I offered you the
- 1:05:55Speaker 1: chair and on my back laid down. Rick got me
- 1:05:59Speaker 1: a little water, It got me a little energy bar.
- 1:06:03Speaker 1: Eventually got back to my feet, and uh, you could
- 1:06:07Speaker 1: tell I was still incapacitated because I was like, uh yeah,
- 1:06:12Speaker 1: I thought I was gonna put I was still incapacitated
- 1:06:14Speaker 1: because I was up full on, feeling like I was
- 1:06:17Speaker 1: glass and sets back Meth was camera and I'll say
- 1:06:19Speaker 1: it's like buck buck yeah, um like blow us yeah.
- 1:06:26Speaker 1: I like when I'm looking you're just like looking in
- 1:06:29Speaker 1: the in that little patch right there, I'm like where
- 1:06:31Speaker 1: And I didn't realize that it was like that far down.
- 1:06:34Speaker 1: It was perfect spot. Yeah, Like I thought it was
- 1:06:37Speaker 1: maybe a little bit further out, but it was legitimate.
- 1:06:40Speaker 1: Why isn't it when we arranged it? Yeah? H yeah,
- 1:06:43Speaker 1: hunting firty horizontal. I mean it was right there. Um
- 1:06:49Speaker 1: jumped on him, hunting for the r jump. Maybe if
- 1:06:52Speaker 1: I had one of those like flying squirrel suits or
- 1:06:54Speaker 1: whatever to fly down the hillside. And man, he was.
- 1:06:57Speaker 1: That's why I like mule to your man is like,
- 1:07:00Speaker 1: you know, no hang out in people's yards like anything, right,
- 1:07:02Speaker 1: but now and then when you see a meal or
- 1:07:05Speaker 1: just like lurking through the you know what I mean,
- 1:07:08Speaker 1: timber buck, they just got like a like a lurky
- 1:07:11Speaker 1: kind of almost a haunted kind of thing they do
- 1:07:16Speaker 1: now and then man, it's almost kind of like a
- 1:07:18Speaker 1: like a swagger. It's like, uh, it's like they like
- 1:07:22Speaker 1: they're strutting their stuff, but then they know they can
- 1:07:24Speaker 1: disappear at any second. And him coming down that trail
- 1:07:29Speaker 1: aspens on either side all that brush and that little
- 1:07:32Speaker 1: fern trail he's coming down. That was perfect window because
- 1:07:36Speaker 1: like I was gonna kick you in the side of
- 1:07:38Speaker 1: the head if you didn't shoot. I was like as
- 1:07:41Speaker 1: I was, I was, I was planning on shooting, but
- 1:07:45Speaker 1: I wanted to be precise. I didn't I didn't want
- 1:07:48Speaker 1: to harm the animal in any way. I wanted to
- 1:07:50Speaker 1: make it as clean as cleaning, humane as possible. And
- 1:07:54Speaker 1: you know, I was thinking about giving you kind of
- 1:07:55Speaker 1: an elaborate description of where I wanted you to hit it,
- 1:08:00Speaker 1: but like like aim for the but that was just
- 1:08:03Speaker 1: like French older, funch older, and Pete shot the heart
- 1:08:07Speaker 1: out of it. Yeah, I told myself I was gonna
- 1:08:10Speaker 1: I'm aiming for the heart. I'm not hitting anything else
- 1:08:13Speaker 1: but the heart. Um. I mean to me, I think
- 1:08:17Speaker 1: that's probably the quickest and concise way to do it.
- 1:08:20Speaker 1: And I wouldn't accept anything else. I had a nice slow,
- 1:08:25Speaker 1: uh slow, controlled trigger press and when I let the
- 1:08:29Speaker 1: I let the gun do its thing. I didn't try
- 1:08:31Speaker 1: and stop it from rick coil And I think the
- 1:08:34Speaker 1: scope may hit me in the mouth, um something. But
- 1:08:39Speaker 1: you looked like a vampire a little bit. That's fine. Um.
- 1:08:43Speaker 1: I know when I because I know when I'm when
- 1:08:45Speaker 1: I relaxed my body, it's like my body was almost
- 1:08:49Speaker 1: limp uh and I let the gun do its thing.
- 1:08:52Speaker 1: That's when I knew I I stuck it really well.
- 1:08:55Speaker 1: That's that's when I knew why. I put put the
- 1:08:57Speaker 1: shot right where I wanted it yep, and it took
- 1:09:01Speaker 1: a couple of bounds and bam, piled up. I don't
- 1:09:04Speaker 1: even think it went yards and then do nothing. I
- 1:09:09Speaker 1: was pretty happy. Yeah, I felt like real happy, was
- 1:09:13Speaker 1: real happy. I felt like a little bit as I
- 1:09:16Speaker 1: felt like, I love I love filming it. His face
- 1:09:20Speaker 1: light up like that makes me happy. I felt like
- 1:09:23Speaker 1: a little bit for crying. But I was just so
- 1:09:26Speaker 1: overcome with joy because I've I've wanted to go hunting
- 1:09:31Speaker 1: for so long. I just never had the opportunity because
- 1:09:34Speaker 1: as soon as I entered the world of professional baseball,
- 1:09:38Speaker 1: uh to kind of that work and that time being
- 1:09:40Speaker 1: put in, like the hunting stuff got put on a
- 1:09:42Speaker 1: back burner. In um having time this offseason and be
- 1:09:46Speaker 1: able to capitalize on that, I mean, this is just
- 1:09:50Speaker 1: a pure blessing, Like you haven't still no idea how
- 1:09:53Speaker 1: appreciative I am of of all you guys, So thank
- 1:09:57Speaker 1: you for having me and um no, this is I'm
- 1:10:01Speaker 1: gonna remember this for us of my life. This is
- 1:10:03Speaker 1: this is sick. We'll get out again. Hell yeah. Uh.
- 1:10:06Speaker 1: When we're doing a show, um, there's people who watch
- 1:10:09Speaker 1: our show will know. We usually if we're lucky in
- 1:10:13Speaker 1: getting something, we kind of highlight a food preparation in
- 1:10:18Speaker 1: the end. And for this one, we're working on what
- 1:10:22Speaker 1: why why are you laughing, Seth? Because I just you
- 1:10:24Speaker 1: know where going? So we wanted to do where we
- 1:10:31Speaker 1: wanted to take. Uh uh. Pete likes a good hamburger.
- 1:10:34Speaker 1: I love good burgers. I love a good burger. And
- 1:10:38Speaker 1: we wanted to do a bone out of shoulder and
- 1:10:44Speaker 1: and and do some grind. So like talking about making
- 1:10:47Speaker 1: good grind burger. To do that, you need to cut
- 1:10:51Speaker 1: it with pork fat or beef tabo, um, beef suet
- 1:10:56Speaker 1: and sorry not Yeah, so like beefs why do they
- 1:10:58Speaker 1: call it beef suet? But you don't know us as
- 1:11:00Speaker 1: pork suit, do they? I don't think so. Yeah, so
- 1:11:03Speaker 1: you caught it with be fatter pork fat. And it
- 1:11:06Speaker 1: just so happens that Cody has had see how I
- 1:11:10Speaker 1: bring this full circle? Yeah, Cody's had a pig that
- 1:11:14Speaker 1: you bought four butchering purposes seven dollars. Yes, it was
- 1:11:21Speaker 1: a discounted hog. Yeah, fourth like a four hundred pound
- 1:11:26Speaker 1: pig for twenty seven dollars. He was five d plus
- 1:11:29Speaker 1: when we first picked him up for a closure pig, right,
- 1:11:32Speaker 1: big old fella. Why did the guy want to sell
- 1:11:36Speaker 1: pick for twenty seven bucks? Why he just slaughter it?
- 1:11:38Speaker 1: I don't know what the situation was. He come out
- 1:11:40Speaker 1: of a sale barn. I had an order buy or
- 1:11:43Speaker 1: buy him for me. So you got a pig and
- 1:11:48Speaker 1: you fed it on expired produced stand produced through the summer,
- 1:11:55Speaker 1: an expired horse feed throughout the fall. Yeah, and uh.
- 1:12:01Speaker 1: When I was out here before to pick, scared the
- 1:12:03Speaker 1: ship out of me. Because I was walking along. No
- 1:12:06Speaker 1: one told me about the pig, and I walked along
- 1:12:08Speaker 1: and I thought, I keep telling everybody this, but it's funny.
- 1:12:10Speaker 1: I thought it was a dead black angus and I
- 1:12:13Speaker 1: was like, oh, what the hell that thing died from?
- 1:12:15Speaker 1: And I went up and got pretty close to it
- 1:12:17Speaker 1: before the pig finally woke up and turned a little. Yeah,
- 1:12:21Speaker 1: scared the ship out of me. And you're like, oh, yeah,
- 1:12:24Speaker 1: I was gonna tell you. I failed to mention that.
- 1:12:28Speaker 1: But we uh this morning because you've been meaning up
- 1:12:33Speaker 1: because you don't want to feed it through the winter
- 1:12:34Speaker 1: to lose weight. You're I ambodying for the intentions of
- 1:12:38Speaker 1: but your n Yeah, and it just so happened. So
- 1:12:42Speaker 1: the Meat Eat Your crew is here and yeah, and
- 1:12:45Speaker 1: Cody wants us to start a domestic show around domestics.
- 1:12:48Speaker 1: So we had the the deer and then this morning
- 1:12:53Speaker 1: we helped slaughter the pig um and cut some of
- 1:12:57Speaker 1: the back fat off it. And I was a little
- 1:13:00Speaker 1: worried about the fat. I don't know why, because I
- 1:13:03Speaker 1: just doesn't know what that thing has been getting into, right,
- 1:13:06Speaker 1: you know, I can situation, but yeah, it's super clear.
- 1:13:10Speaker 1: We've been dealing with pigs and blanche lately too and
- 1:13:12Speaker 1: having this this question arise, you know often about what
- 1:13:16Speaker 1: pigs have been getting into and we're gonna eat him.
- 1:13:18Speaker 1: Yeah because me and Yeah, we just bought a pig ourselves,
- 1:13:22Speaker 1: but it was dead. We bought a butcher pig from
- 1:13:23Speaker 1: a guy that a friend of ours. The guy we
- 1:13:25Speaker 1: worked with, Kevin Harlander, who's been on the show. Um,
- 1:13:28Speaker 1: he raised some pigs and we bought a pig from him.
- 1:13:31Speaker 1: He was feeding the pigs. I don't know if it
- 1:13:34Speaker 1: was solely but barley mash right, what's left? Hm? And
- 1:13:42Speaker 1: so we got that pig now. But then we went
- 1:13:44Speaker 1: to your pig and took some of the back fat off,
- 1:13:48Speaker 1: and then got back here, and I don't and I
- 1:13:50Speaker 1: was nervous about the fat wouldn't be good because I
- 1:13:52Speaker 1: know the pigs like old. Yeah, he was older, losing weight,
- 1:13:56Speaker 1: still had one of his nuts kind of kind of.
- 1:14:00Speaker 1: So we took a thin slice of that back fat.
- 1:14:06Speaker 1: The back fat comes off like what half inch thick county,
- 1:14:10Speaker 1: that's say an inch probably an inch. Those pieces we
- 1:14:15Speaker 1: had were not an inch thick. We'll let you cook
- 1:14:17Speaker 1: him down. Oh, just let's go three quarters, let's meet halfway.
- 1:14:22Speaker 1: I'm not gonna I'm not gonna meet halfway to wrongness.
- 1:14:28Speaker 1: They're not an inch thick. That's an inch. Five eights
- 1:14:36Speaker 1: comes off and five and we caught them into like
- 1:14:41Speaker 1: we could all the back fat and like these sort
- 1:14:43Speaker 1: of like six by six or seven by seven squares
- 1:14:46Speaker 1: of five h inch thick back fat and put in
- 1:14:51Speaker 1: the freezer so it'll start to set up nice, real
- 1:14:54Speaker 1: clean white fat. Boned out the deer leg and cube
- 1:14:58Speaker 1: that in one inch cubes. Put the squares of fat
- 1:15:03Speaker 1: from the from beans the pig that was his name
- 1:15:06Speaker 1: in the freezer until it got firm, slice it and
- 1:15:11Speaker 1: thin slice, and then put a thin slice in a
- 1:15:15Speaker 1: pan to test it for goodness before we ground up
- 1:15:20Speaker 1: all the deer meat. And would you think of that
- 1:15:21Speaker 1: pig fat? I think that was the best little pork
- 1:15:24Speaker 1: crackling I've ever had. That was tasty as hell, especially
- 1:15:28Speaker 1: when you put a little salt on it. That was
- 1:15:30Speaker 1: really good pork fat plus plus. And then we ground up.
- 1:15:34Speaker 1: We were gonna do temper same we did, like a
- 1:15:36Speaker 1: healthy grind. I think we didn't do all of it.
- 1:15:40Speaker 1: I think how much do we do? We did like
- 1:15:41Speaker 1: whole like maybe like two like slabs of it. I'd
- 1:15:45Speaker 1: have to guess we did about twenty. So we did
- 1:15:47Speaker 1: one whole meal to your shoulder and then cut in.
- 1:15:51Speaker 1: I would say, of that weight and of beans as fat,
- 1:15:55Speaker 1: like a healthy twenty. Yeah. Let me ask you this, Pete.
- 1:16:00Speaker 1: Just give me yes or no answer. The beans go
- 1:16:04Speaker 1: down easy. He died a hero. That's all I'm gonna say. Um,
- 1:16:12Speaker 1: wonderful fat. Then ground off. You know how beans guy's
- 1:16:16Speaker 1: names named Beans? Well, everybody called I named him, but
- 1:16:21Speaker 1: everybody calls her pig bacon. You know, let's go eat
- 1:16:23Speaker 1: some baker or whatever. Hamm, yeah, your nickname him hambone
- 1:16:29Speaker 1: or that's a bacon or chop or pork and beans.
- 1:16:34Speaker 1: I didn't know that was the thing. Yeah. And and Charlotte,
- 1:16:40Speaker 1: oh yeah, we saw a black widow. Charlotte was a
- 1:16:43Speaker 1: spider right, yeah, yeah, black widow in my tent that
- 1:16:47Speaker 1: you guys let live. No, we found a black widow
- 1:16:51Speaker 1: in your camp. Black widow in your camp. Rick argued
- 1:16:55Speaker 1: to leave it there to kill you not very long.
- 1:16:58Speaker 1: You made a quick case of like you're gonna leave
- 1:17:00Speaker 1: that around to fight somebody, and I was like a
- 1:17:03Speaker 1: displaced black widow and cordies camp. Um uh yeah. So
- 1:17:09Speaker 1: we ground it up and man, really good. The burgers
- 1:17:13Speaker 1: made burgers. I mean, that's probably the upper echelon of burgers.
- 1:17:18Speaker 1: If if I said some myself, those those are awesome burgers.
- 1:17:22Speaker 1: And what do you feel you're gonna bring your whole
- 1:17:26Speaker 1: deer home? Yes? Do you feel that you'll eat it
- 1:17:30Speaker 1: like really fast and be done with it. I remember
- 1:17:31Speaker 1: when I went when when we took Joe Rogan uh
- 1:17:34Speaker 1: deer hunt for the first time, he brought his deer home,
- 1:17:38Speaker 1: and man, it feels it's like two or three weeks
- 1:17:41Speaker 1: later he was that a dear me, his deer was gone.
- 1:17:47Speaker 1: He's went home and ate it. Man, do you think
- 1:17:50Speaker 1: you'll milk it out? Or you think you'll just eat it?
- 1:17:52Speaker 1: I don't know. I got I got some really good uh.
- 1:17:55Speaker 1: I got some really close friends that I'm sure would
- 1:17:57Speaker 1: appreciate some of it. Um, I got some family members.
- 1:18:02Speaker 1: I know I'm probably gonna have some backstrap for Thanksgiving.
- 1:18:06Speaker 1: So I don't know. I mean I think that I mean,
- 1:18:09Speaker 1: if we have it, I'd probably rather eat that than
- 1:18:12Speaker 1: go to the grocery store, because, hey, I know where
- 1:18:15Speaker 1: it came from. It's probably it's got packed with way
- 1:18:18Speaker 1: more vitamins and nutrients and uh like a regular regular
- 1:18:22Speaker 1: cow you get from the grocery store super food. Man. Yeah, absolutely,
- 1:18:27Speaker 1: So I think that i'd probably rather cook a steak
- 1:18:32Speaker 1: from the backstrap or um do like an awesome buco
- 1:18:36Speaker 1: than from the deer meat, rather than go to the
- 1:18:39Speaker 1: grocery store. I don't know. If I'm gonna buy red
- 1:18:41Speaker 1: meat and until the deer's gone to that's that's advisable.
- 1:18:45Speaker 1: That's what I would do. Um do you uh you
- 1:18:49Speaker 1: have our our Wild Game cookbook. I do. Yes. Uh.
- 1:18:52Speaker 1: You know what I think you ought to make what
- 1:18:54Speaker 1: for Thanksgiving? Yeah, is make the make the all the
- 1:19:00Speaker 1: flower puree in the backstrap dish. Hell yeah, it's a
- 1:19:06Speaker 1: recipe from our buddy Pooter. Yeah, I mean very very
- 1:19:11Speaker 1: Thanksgiving me perfect because I don't think that I've taught
- 1:19:14Speaker 1: this for I don't think that Um on Thanksgiving. Uh.
- 1:19:19Speaker 1: If you want to have a traditional Thanksgiving, eat dear meat. Absolutely,
- 1:19:23Speaker 1: they know those sons a Bitch and pilgrims eight dear meat.
- 1:19:28Speaker 1: It's it's debated whether or not they ate turkeys. So
- 1:19:32Speaker 1: if you want a real Thanksgiving, have yourself to do.
- 1:19:35Speaker 1: I don't think they had cauliflower puree. They wish they did. Yeah,
- 1:19:39Speaker 1: but I also don't think they had apple pie. They
- 1:19:42Speaker 1: wish they didn't as well. Yes, so I think you
- 1:19:44Speaker 1: should make that because it's a very It's like you're
- 1:19:47Speaker 1: gonna have your you're gonna have your wife's family over girlfriends.
- 1:19:51Speaker 1: We split, We split holiday, so we'll be up in
- 1:19:54Speaker 1: Um where her family is in Boston for for think
- 1:19:58Speaker 1: for for Christmas, will be and Tampa for Thanksgiving. So
- 1:20:01Speaker 1: you'll be cooking it for your family. Yeah, man, do
- 1:20:05Speaker 1: the back strap with the cauliflower pure. Yeah, absolutely, very
- 1:20:10Speaker 1: very thanksgiving me. And also, um, and we're gonna send
- 1:20:14Speaker 1: you home with a sack of beans is fat. You're
- 1:20:16Speaker 1: gonna make cracklins for everybody. I'm gonna make cracklands. Um.
- 1:20:20Speaker 1: Probably if you send me home with the thing of
- 1:20:22Speaker 1: a cracklins, I'm probably gonna make that as soon as
- 1:20:24Speaker 1: I land. For for my fiancee, I'm just gonna tell
- 1:20:27Speaker 1: her just just just hold on, just taste it and
- 1:20:32Speaker 1: just tell me after you eat it, and then she's she's.
- 1:20:36Speaker 1: I mean, I was kind of skeptical at first. I mean,
- 1:20:38Speaker 1: I'll I'll try anything. I love cracklands, but that was
- 1:20:44Speaker 1: like the best crackling I've ever had. What you can
- 1:20:47Speaker 1: do too is render all that fat out, cupe it up,
- 1:20:49Speaker 1: rendered out, and then you have a little bucket of
- 1:20:51Speaker 1: special lard. Hell yeah, cook your eggs in, cook your
- 1:20:55Speaker 1: eggs in, make some biscuits, whatever kind of stuff you
- 1:20:58Speaker 1: can do. Make pie crossed mince me ice, that bear
- 1:21:01Speaker 1: lard from black pear, and I made a really nice
- 1:21:04Speaker 1: pie cross for mince meat pie with that With that
- 1:21:07Speaker 1: bear lard. I mean there's a ton of stuff that
- 1:21:12Speaker 1: you could you just it's all about being creative. That's
- 1:21:14Speaker 1: why I like, I mean that cookbook is is helpful
- 1:21:17Speaker 1: in a lot of ways because there's a lot of
- 1:21:19Speaker 1: really creative ways to to dress up whild game as
- 1:21:23Speaker 1: as opposed to just doing the old, old timey, old
- 1:21:27Speaker 1: fashioned recipes. And that's a way to kind of I'm
- 1:21:31Speaker 1: not saying, like kind of put like an elegant twist
- 1:21:33Speaker 1: on something, uh something from the field. And that's why
- 1:21:37Speaker 1: I wanted to get the book, you know, Um yeah
- 1:21:43Speaker 1: I had. It was a fun It was a really
- 1:21:45Speaker 1: fun time to have you out, uh to go thank
- 1:21:49Speaker 1: you because we don't really know each Yeah, I didn't
- 1:21:51Speaker 1: know not really didn't know you at all, but like
- 1:21:54Speaker 1: I just kind of like watch how you sort of
- 1:21:57Speaker 1: handle yourself, and I thought you were an intriguing person,
- 1:22:01Speaker 1: and um, thank you. Rather than like and you last
- 1:22:04Speaker 1: through the whole week, I only what I liked you
- 1:22:06Speaker 1: more every day. Thank you. Yeah, I think everybody did. Man,
- 1:22:09Speaker 1: it was really fun to have you. Thank you. Um,
- 1:22:12Speaker 1: I mean I just try and be as as positive
- 1:22:14Speaker 1: as I possibly can be and regardless of every situation,
- 1:22:19Speaker 1: and um, I guess that's kind of like my motto.
- 1:22:23Speaker 1: I mean, I don't want to be any any negative
- 1:22:26Speaker 1: because I think that's I mean, it's I don't think
- 1:22:30Speaker 1: negativity is ever helpful, if that makes sense. You know,
- 1:22:33Speaker 1: it's funny you told me at one point, not bragging,
- 1:22:35Speaker 1: but you told me we're having a conversation about complaining.
- 1:22:38Speaker 1: You tell me a matter of factly, like I don't complain,
- 1:22:42Speaker 1: but not like you're bragging about You're just like stating
- 1:22:45Speaker 1: a point. You just don't complain, just like make that
- 1:22:50Speaker 1: part of your life. Yeah, I don't. I don't like
- 1:22:53Speaker 1: to because this is a great this is a great
- 1:22:55Speaker 1: way to go through outstanding, but hard to pull off, man,
- 1:23:00Speaker 1: because like it's like, let's I mean, there's a couple
- 1:23:03Speaker 1: of mornings or its fucking cold. Yeah, Like if I
- 1:23:06Speaker 1: would saying, oh man, it's fucking yeah, No, ship is
- 1:23:09Speaker 1: cold like that stayed in the obvious, Like that's not
- 1:23:12Speaker 1: gonna make it any warmer, you know what I mean?
- 1:23:14Speaker 1: So you just you just grind through it. And I
- 1:23:19Speaker 1: mean when I got sick and laid down, did you
- 1:23:21Speaker 1: think less of me? No? Absolutely not I did. I
- 1:23:24Speaker 1: was like Steve, I was getting soft, awful, are fearless?
- 1:23:31Speaker 1: He's weak? No, ship happen. Ship happens to everybody. I
- 1:23:34Speaker 1: mean pop tart. Think about when was the last time
- 1:23:37Speaker 1: you had a pop tart? Yeah, we've been hitting. We
- 1:23:42Speaker 1: got a hold. I don't know how we wanted up.
- 1:23:44Speaker 1: I didn't know you. I didn't know you're hitting the
- 1:23:45Speaker 1: pop tarts heavy. I was eating pop tarts, saying cream
- 1:23:48Speaker 1: and wheat, and that's the only day. Somehow, getting up
- 1:23:53Speaker 1: at four thirty, I wake up hungry. Somehow getting up
- 1:23:56Speaker 1: at four I wasn't hungry yet. I needed one more
- 1:23:58Speaker 1: half hour to get hungry. But also, didn't you say
- 1:24:00Speaker 1: you didn't sleep that well that night? Sleeps everything. I
- 1:24:03Speaker 1: had too much to drink the night before, too much
- 1:24:06Speaker 1: alcohol because we had the Toasted thing the night before, right, Yeah,
- 1:24:14Speaker 1: so I had too much fun doing that. I loved it.
- 1:24:17Speaker 1: That was awesome, Hopefully I surprised a couple of people. Oh,
- 1:24:21Speaker 1: we're gonna edit it down, so you just have all
- 1:24:23Speaker 1: wrong answers. No, we won't do that to you. Okay,
- 1:24:29Speaker 1: we'll do a fair representation. Yeah, we we filled an
- 1:24:32Speaker 1: episode of our thing, get Toasted with Pete, So if
- 1:24:36Speaker 1: you stay tuned on on on YouTube, you'll find get Toasted.
- 1:24:40Speaker 1: Um yeah, and you got to try the fancy whiskey
- 1:24:43Speaker 1: that I haven't I haven't even gotten try yet. What
- 1:24:45Speaker 1: do you think was it good? I thought it was outstanding, dude.
- 1:24:47Speaker 1: It's because you said right now, Johnny, didn't you say?
- 1:24:51Speaker 1: It's like the secret was the Kentucky What is it?
- 1:24:55Speaker 1: The Kentucky whiskey, Kentucky bourbon? You bring it up to
- 1:24:58Speaker 1: Montana and it's the mon Tannah snow melt water. That's right.
- 1:25:04Speaker 1: That's that's hell of a touch like job all done
- 1:25:07Speaker 1: on the on the mediat or special edition whiskey. That
- 1:25:09Speaker 1: ship's also it's high quality. Man, it's good, top notch.
- 1:25:12Speaker 1: I'm drinking right well, I'm I drank it already now
- 1:25:15Speaker 1: I'm just I make a special drink right, put bourbon
- 1:25:20Speaker 1: in there on ice, and I put a bunch of
- 1:25:24Speaker 1: cherries in there. So in Manhattan, I don't know. Yeah,
- 1:25:30Speaker 1: as what they call that, it's good. It is good.
- 1:25:33Speaker 1: We have a recipe on the website. You should check
- 1:25:35Speaker 1: it out. We're going home with a bottle of it. Um.
- 1:25:38Speaker 1: It's called a meat hatton. That our buddy that works
- 1:25:41Speaker 1: for us more. He's on Chucker's right now. You know
- 1:25:45Speaker 1: what the Chucker is what's the chucker? I'm asking do
- 1:25:48Speaker 1: you know what the chucker is? I'm asking you. I
- 1:25:50Speaker 1: don't know what a chucker? What's chucker? It's a bird
- 1:25:52Speaker 1: from eur Asia called a red legged partridge and they're
- 1:25:56Speaker 1: they're like cliff faces. They're like the rockiest, driest na
- 1:26:00Speaker 1: asty is. It's like they eat rocks, um and they
- 1:26:05Speaker 1: they they've been introduced around, but they do well in
- 1:26:09Speaker 1: places like you know, Snake River Canyon, um, where like
- 1:26:14Speaker 1: Nevada has good some chucker spots just like rugged sheep plate,
- 1:26:19Speaker 1: sheep country, Utah. Okay, that's okay, sheep country, that's right. Um.
- 1:26:24Speaker 1: He likes to hunt chalkers. Cool. But yeah, look up
- 1:26:28Speaker 1: that recipe. Check it out. The meat hatton? What is what?
- 1:26:32Speaker 1: How did he like infused bacon into it? Is that
- 1:26:36Speaker 1: how he made the meat hatton? M hmm Yeah. Put
- 1:26:40Speaker 1: some beans beans cracklings in there. Now you're talking there,
- 1:26:45Speaker 1: it's good man, Cody. What's the status on the on
- 1:26:48Speaker 1: the beans bacon, the beans bacon. He's hanging. He's hanging
- 1:26:52Speaker 1: right now. Yeah, he's he's in chill mode for a bit. Uh.
- 1:26:56Speaker 1: What else do we want? We had a couple things
- 1:26:58Speaker 1: we want to touch on now and before we wrapped up.
- 1:27:00Speaker 1: Yep for sure. Oh me and Yanni are running for president.
- 1:27:04Speaker 1: We're doing a writing campaign. I'm voting for you guys,
- 1:27:07Speaker 1: Are you really Yep, we're doing writing. It's Runella tells
- 1:27:11Speaker 1: all the you know, normal people when they run for president,
- 1:27:16Speaker 1: they take all the money that they get and they
- 1:27:18Speaker 1: use it to keep running for president. The money we
- 1:27:20Speaker 1: get UM, all the money we get through our bumper
- 1:27:25Speaker 1: stickers and yard signs and T shirts, we're using to start,
- 1:27:29Speaker 1: uh filling up our piggy bank for access projects absolutely
- 1:27:33Speaker 1: hell yeah, for hunting effiicient access. And then we're gonna
- 1:27:36Speaker 1: take our big piggy bank and we're gonna continue to
- 1:27:40Speaker 1: notify people. But how this is gonna work. We've got
- 1:27:43Speaker 1: some other plans and the works on access projects to
- 1:27:45Speaker 1: help help increase hunting efficient access and so we need
- 1:27:48Speaker 1: to but it's gonna take dollars. So this is the step,
- 1:27:51Speaker 1: and this is one of the first steps, and getting
- 1:27:53Speaker 1: our dollars together is running for president UM. Our buddy
- 1:27:56Speaker 1: Ronnie Bam has been the show. He's gonna run the
- 1:27:59Speaker 1: a t F for us UM because he likes the
- 1:28:02Speaker 1: alcohol and tobacco l and firearms and uh, Ryan Callahan
- 1:28:08Speaker 1: is gonna be our Interior secretary. Perfect. A lot of
- 1:28:12Speaker 1: people wait to announce all the appointments until that after
- 1:28:15Speaker 1: they win. But we're still positive to win that we're
- 1:28:18Speaker 1: just announcing all of our appointments now, and that's awesome.
- 1:28:22Speaker 1: I mean, I really appreciate you guys doing that because
- 1:28:26Speaker 1: um running for president or not not just running for president.
- 1:28:29Speaker 1: I mean that's that's a given, but sacrifice, right, But
- 1:28:33Speaker 1: also it's the kind of the thought of kind of
- 1:28:36Speaker 1: making hunting, of hunting and fishing available to the general public. Um. Yeah,
- 1:28:42Speaker 1: that's our you know, our campaign slogan, Yeah, better hunting
- 1:28:45Speaker 1: and fishing for America because um, in in in the
- 1:28:48Speaker 1: state of Florida, a lot of fisheries available, that's that's
- 1:28:52Speaker 1: not the issue. But the hunting stuff that's really the issue.
- 1:28:56Speaker 1: It's there's not there's pretty much barely any ablic land
- 1:29:00Speaker 1: available to to go hunt. I mean, we hear a
- 1:29:03Speaker 1: lot of complaints from from Floridian hunters. Yea who they
- 1:29:07Speaker 1: have like they live in the fishing paradise. Yeah, I
- 1:29:10Speaker 1: mean I love to fish. Like the complaining about hunting
- 1:29:13Speaker 1: to us a lot. Yeah, I mean I'm a I'm
- 1:29:15Speaker 1: a flat fishing enthusiast. I love trout, redfish, snook. Um.
- 1:29:21Speaker 1: I mean it's it's it's an awesome, awesome type of
- 1:29:24Speaker 1: fishing and big fan, big fan of it, big fan
- 1:29:28Speaker 1: of Florida fishing. Like it's just so diverse. I think
- 1:29:31Speaker 1: that's I think it's some of the best fishing in
- 1:29:34Speaker 1: the entire world. Um. But on the on the flip
- 1:29:38Speaker 1: side of that coin, having readily accessible hunting opportunities just
- 1:29:44Speaker 1: isn't for the isn't for the normal person. Um. And
- 1:29:48Speaker 1: I mean there's just not enough like public land hunt
- 1:29:51Speaker 1: and the public land that is available to hunt, it's
- 1:29:53Speaker 1: crowded as hell. It's crowded as hell. It's almost to
- 1:29:56Speaker 1: the point where it can be unsafe, especially especially during
- 1:30:00Speaker 1: gun season. So, um, the fact that you guys are
- 1:30:04Speaker 1: doing that, um, especially if you're that's gonna that's gonna
- 1:30:08Speaker 1: impact my home state directly. If you guys invest in
- 1:30:12Speaker 1: properties there uh to make available to the public. So
- 1:30:15Speaker 1: I think that'd be outstanding. Well, we'll keep at it.
- 1:30:18Speaker 1: To find out, you have to follow the campaign, go
- 1:30:20Speaker 1: to the to just go to the meat or dot
- 1:30:22Speaker 1: com or oh you know what, I wanted to mention
- 1:30:25Speaker 1: the Bucky guy was a pretty nice damn buck for
- 1:30:27Speaker 1: a first buck. Yeah, real nice buck. I put a
- 1:30:31Speaker 1: picture up on Instagram now and people are like, we're
- 1:30:35Speaker 1: talking about a buck A guy shot that got impaled
- 1:30:37Speaker 1: on a stick. And I was gonna put it on
- 1:30:38Speaker 1: Instagram too a long time ago, and people are like,
- 1:30:41Speaker 1: do it's not on there. I just got to think
- 1:30:43Speaker 1: it felt a little gratuitous to put it on there.
- 1:30:46Speaker 1: But the picture of your box already there, so people
- 1:30:49Speaker 1: can go there and see it. They'll find our campaign
- 1:30:52Speaker 1: announcement video. They'll find Ronnie Bam announcing that he's gonna
- 1:30:56Speaker 1: run the a t F for us. All there. Uh
- 1:31:00Speaker 1: uh what other? What else are we're gonna talk about
- 1:31:02Speaker 1: real quick? Oh no. We was plugged the UM the
- 1:31:07Speaker 1: Back forty giveaway, So we bought a modest farm in Michigan,
- 1:31:19Speaker 1: UM sixty four acres we called the back Ford. Because
- 1:31:25Speaker 1: it's always important to undersell things, not oversell, we bought
- 1:31:28Speaker 1: a place called the Back forty. It's sixty four acres
- 1:31:30Speaker 1: in Michigan, and we're doing a bunch of habitat work
- 1:31:33Speaker 1: on it. Mark Kenyan is running the project for us.
- 1:31:35Speaker 1: We're doing a bunch of habitat work on this property.
- 1:31:38Speaker 1: Eventually we're gonna give the property away, but in the meantime,
- 1:31:41Speaker 1: we're going to give away a hunt where people could
- 1:31:45Speaker 1: come out and and go out and hunt with me
- 1:31:47Speaker 1: and Mark. And me and Mark will be more like
- 1:31:49Speaker 1: your like errand boys, because the winner will get the
- 1:31:53Speaker 1: cherry spot and we'll just be there to facilitate and
- 1:31:56Speaker 1: cook wild game at night and hang out. So we're
- 1:31:59Speaker 1: doing this give way hunt. Um and you find that
- 1:32:02Speaker 1: two at the mediator dot com a lot of announcements. Yeah,
- 1:32:06Speaker 1: you just sign up for the newsletter. Yes, that's a
- 1:32:08Speaker 1: good way to get yourself entered for that in the
- 1:32:10Speaker 1: New white our New White Tail weekly newsletter. Quick question
- 1:32:13Speaker 1: about that? What type of person are you looking for
- 1:32:15Speaker 1: to win? It's randomized, completely randomized. It's not like an
- 1:32:20Speaker 1: essay contest, got you. It's randomized got you. Some of
- 1:32:24Speaker 1: the lies have a good time, you know, into hunting. Well,
- 1:32:28Speaker 1: I don't know, maybe they hate hunting. They have one. Yeah,
- 1:32:33Speaker 1: I can't imagine someone entering the contest if they don't
- 1:32:36Speaker 1: like hunting. It would seem weird. It would seem weird
- 1:32:40Speaker 1: that one would do that. I'm expecting it to be
- 1:32:42Speaker 1: a hunting enthusiast. Can you but just picture of this
- 1:32:46Speaker 1: like someone not wanting, not just winning the contest, just
- 1:32:49Speaker 1: out of spite to say it, dear, just just sitting
- 1:32:52Speaker 1: there in the tree stand with the arms crossing their
- 1:32:54Speaker 1: and their mean eyebrows, with me going, what's the problem
- 1:32:59Speaker 1: they did that with the grizzly bear. Oh yeah, I
- 1:33:04Speaker 1: would love to know how many people actually protesting. A
- 1:33:08Speaker 1: few I heard, Yeah, like they actually like got noticed
- 1:33:12Speaker 1: that they were gonna be drawn for a tag. Well,
- 1:33:15Speaker 1: one guy for sure. Oh yeah, you know you're right,
- 1:33:18Speaker 1: You're right, you're right. The wildlife photographer, so Magnelson, Yeah,
- 1:33:24Speaker 1: some guy that hangs out in the park too much.
- 1:33:27Speaker 1: UM one of those things we're gonna I'm gonna release
- 1:33:33Speaker 1: it when we uh, when we win the presidency. Even
- 1:33:38Speaker 1: before then, we're gonna release a detailed platform like all
- 1:33:44Speaker 1: the things ways that which is gonna better hunting and
- 1:33:47Speaker 1: fishing for America. Rick's gonna hate this one, but one
- 1:33:49Speaker 1: of them is gonna be that a National Parks wildlife
- 1:33:53Speaker 1: management is handed over to the state in the state
- 1:33:58Speaker 1: um will in the same spirit regulatory structure in which
- 1:34:05Speaker 1: the surrounding lands are managed for hunting. The national parks
- 1:34:09Speaker 1: will be managed for hunting, and during hunting season, only
- 1:34:13Speaker 1: those license hunters will be allowed in the park. It's
- 1:34:16Speaker 1: gonna be wonderful, very controversial, very controversial position, but it's
- 1:34:22Speaker 1: cut down on revenue for the part unless I'm like
- 1:34:26Speaker 1: Elizabeth Warren Man, I got a plan for that. I'll
- 1:34:30Speaker 1: tell everybody about it later. So, um, so would you
- 1:34:35Speaker 1: put with the person that applying for those tags? Would
- 1:34:38Speaker 1: they have to pay more to hunt in the park.
- 1:34:40Speaker 1: I don't know. Think about doing something called the Yellowstone
- 1:34:43Speaker 1: supertag and it'd be like a handful of people will
- 1:34:46Speaker 1: draw a Yellowstone supertag and the super tag is good
- 1:34:51Speaker 1: for you. It's good for one of everything, and you
- 1:34:55Speaker 1: can you can transfer him to your bodies. So if
- 1:34:59Speaker 1: you do the yellosone super tag, it's like bison, elk, sheep,
- 1:35:05Speaker 1: black bear backlog of maintenance if you could help close
- 1:35:09Speaker 1: that budget gap. No, hell, this is all gonna make sense.
- 1:35:13Speaker 1: It's gonna be a wonderful country. Um, it's gonna be one.
- 1:35:17Speaker 1: It's gonna be the saying's gonna be so much better.
- 1:35:18Speaker 1: Pebble Mine is done dead. Michigan is getting a dove season.
- 1:35:24Speaker 1: We're gonna be hunting the national parks. It's gonna be
- 1:35:26Speaker 1: a win for hunters and hunt on Sundays. Hunt. Pennsylvanians
- 1:35:31Speaker 1: will be hunting on Sundays. That's a rule in Pennsylvania.
- 1:35:35Speaker 1: There's they're fighting. The first thing that's gonna happen. The
- 1:35:38Speaker 1: first thing we're gonna sign in the law, you know, Yanni,
- 1:35:40Speaker 1: is we're gonna sign in the law making it illegal,
- 1:35:44Speaker 1: um illegal to prohibit Sunday hunting. And it's if you
- 1:35:50Speaker 1: discard a wild turkey's thighs. It's a capital, a federal capital.
- 1:35:57Speaker 1: It's a death penalty offense to a scarred a wild
- 1:36:00Speaker 1: turkey sighs. We're gonna be a fishing too. We're not
- 1:36:03Speaker 1: gonna even have to run for a second term. We're
- 1:36:05Speaker 1: gonna get it all done in four done. Yeah, be
- 1:36:09Speaker 1: back to enjoying the fronts of our labor. So you're
- 1:36:15Speaker 1: telling me people get rid of the five meat, not
- 1:36:19Speaker 1: after four years of being having them whittled away. It
- 1:36:23Speaker 1: just bogged. Oh yeah, No, they'll tay the time in
- 1:36:26Speaker 1: a way. But we're gonna have black, black booted thugs
- 1:36:28Speaker 1: that kick your door down the hall. Y off. If
- 1:36:31Speaker 1: you throw out your thigh meat and um yeah, and war,
- 1:36:36Speaker 1: we're gonna give it like full wilderness protection. I like it.
- 1:36:41Speaker 1: You're coming across all the boundaries. It's the country is
- 1:36:45Speaker 1: gonna be ready for the craziest moderate ever, the most
- 1:36:52Speaker 1: extreme moderates. So get your get your if you stand
- 1:36:55Speaker 1: in the most liberal conservatives, if you stand for hunting
- 1:36:58Speaker 1: fish and get your bump stickers. Now, Um, this was
- 1:37:02Speaker 1: probably I was the worst deer hunter I've ever been
- 1:37:07Speaker 1: this week. You didn't scout up a single thing. I
- 1:37:11Speaker 1: found some deer. Matt and I took a little trip
- 1:37:13Speaker 1: down south where the deer were possibly migrating to. We
- 1:37:18Speaker 1: found some deer. Um did he say they were elk? No,
- 1:37:23Speaker 1: he didn't know. He thought he saw some milk. We
- 1:37:26Speaker 1: didn't see any elk, but we saw something. We found
- 1:37:30Speaker 1: some deer. Uh. And we could have possibly gone and
- 1:37:32Speaker 1: hunted there and it could have panned out for us,
- 1:37:35Speaker 1: you know, if we needed to. But uh yeah, um,
- 1:37:39Speaker 1: it was rough, rough hunting for me this week. Then
- 1:37:42Speaker 1: you went back in the morning that place had gotten Colorado. Yeah, yeah,
- 1:37:46Speaker 1: for sure, for sure. I thought I knew, but I
- 1:37:50Speaker 1: knew in the back of my head. I'm like, there
- 1:37:52Speaker 1: ain't no way that this little sneaky spot, you know. Yeah,
- 1:37:56Speaker 1: And so I went there in the morning. I was
- 1:37:58Speaker 1: the sixth chuck to pull. Uh yeah. So no, I
- 1:38:04Speaker 1: don't I don't have anything great to give you. As
- 1:38:06Speaker 1: a final father than I was just a sad and
- 1:38:09Speaker 1: mean I'm like, I'm like itching, I need to go home,
- 1:38:11Speaker 1: and I'm trying to right now playing my week out
- 1:38:13Speaker 1: to figure out when's the first day I can play
- 1:38:16Speaker 1: hooky and go hunting and try to get my mojo back.
- 1:38:20Speaker 1: Over the weekend. We're gonna um uh me and my kids.
- 1:38:24Speaker 1: I don't want to say me my kids are taking
- 1:38:26Speaker 1: Tracy deer hunting. Oh that's cool, but I'm taking Tracy
- 1:38:32Speaker 1: deer hunting and my kids are coming along to confuse
- 1:38:34Speaker 1: the matter. Wow, just you, you're gonna be the only
- 1:38:38Speaker 1: other adult and Tracy and three kids and my wife's
- 1:38:41Speaker 1: out of town. That's gonna be a lot on your place. Seth.
- 1:38:47Speaker 1: You should go and be helped. No, you help Tracy
- 1:38:51Speaker 1: out and I'll yell at my kids. Yeah. Um. Any
- 1:38:55Speaker 1: final thoughts. I think my thought is the deer and
- 1:39:02Speaker 1: elk seasons are going to get progressively better throughout the years,
- 1:39:06Speaker 1: if the structure has changed. They're talking about changing the
- 1:39:09Speaker 1: season structures in Colorado. A lot of pressure, like we
- 1:39:13Speaker 1: talked earlier on me to make it that everything isn't
- 1:39:16Speaker 1: over the counter, right, that's gonna it has to happen,
- 1:39:19Speaker 1: it does. It has to happen. That's my thought. It's
- 1:39:21Speaker 1: not it's not sustainable. Mhm. It's gonna be unpopular, but
- 1:39:26Speaker 1: its just and after seeing what you guys want through this,
- 1:39:30Speaker 1: you know this hunt because it was kind of tough
- 1:39:33Speaker 1: with the pressure and the outside pressure and whatever from
- 1:39:38Speaker 1: even if you don't yeah, even there's just the cut
- 1:39:41Speaker 1: off there, there's gonna have to be. Something's gotta something,
- 1:39:46Speaker 1: something's gonna give, something's gonna give. They don't want to
- 1:39:49Speaker 1: destroy the reputation that they've built. Uh rick Uh. What
- 1:39:55Speaker 1: I enjoyed the fact that you guys have such an
- 1:39:59Speaker 1: amazing like ability to navigate the vernacular of like hunting.
- 1:40:03Speaker 1: Like when you're talking hunting with it doesn't matter if
- 1:40:05Speaker 1: it's like sports like fisherman from Florida or like duck
- 1:40:08Speaker 1: hunting or all these different forms of hunting and fishing,
- 1:40:13Speaker 1: you're like, no, the lingo and you never know what
- 1:40:15Speaker 1: we're talking about, and I sort of him yeah, like
- 1:40:17Speaker 1: I'm like barely hanging on or all. Or I'll try
- 1:40:20Speaker 1: to ask a question, I'll like, like the thought behind
- 1:40:24Speaker 1: the question is right, but I like, don't use any
- 1:40:26Speaker 1: of the right words or whatnot. So I got to
- 1:40:28Speaker 1: witness you do that with sports, with baseball, and it
- 1:40:30Speaker 1: was just fantastic to ask questions that were good questions
- 1:40:35Speaker 1: but using not know how to ask, yeah, not not
- 1:40:38Speaker 1: even know the words to ask the question. And I
- 1:40:41Speaker 1: just I just I just kind of enjoyed watching that.
- 1:40:44Speaker 1: Who knew that there were two leagues in Major League Baseball, right,
- 1:40:49Speaker 1: like and L and A let that National League and
- 1:40:54Speaker 1: and they got different rules. Yeah, yeah, so all that
- 1:40:57Speaker 1: stuff Like I I mean, you know, I play Little
- 1:41:00Speaker 1: league and learned about all that stuff and watch baseball.
- 1:41:02Speaker 1: I like it. Man, I'm like, not only this listen,
- 1:41:05Speaker 1: I'm like a big time Mets fan now, man, yeah,
- 1:41:08Speaker 1: I mean you should be. I'm gonna have my face
- 1:41:10Speaker 1: painted and ship now and I'm at yeah, to be
- 1:41:16Speaker 1: able to pick the brain of somebody that's in the
- 1:41:18Speaker 1: in the big league, big leagues and watching YouTube videos
- 1:41:22Speaker 1: and hitting homers, I mean it is it is like unreal.
- 1:41:28Speaker 1: So yeah, it was. It was cool being able to
- 1:41:30Speaker 1: he looks so much older and different when you're up
- 1:41:32Speaker 1: there hitting them homers because I know what I'm doing.
- 1:41:37Speaker 1: Oh and yeah, and the other thing is is Steve's
- 1:41:40Speaker 1: ability to kind of in those moments of high pressure.
- 1:41:43Speaker 1: You know, he's mentoring. You know, I've I've watched him
- 1:41:46Speaker 1: interact with many many a hunter mentoring. You know, Buck
- 1:41:50Speaker 1: shows up and he gets home using that word. Yeah,
- 1:41:53Speaker 1: it is a it's a mental relationship, and you're really
- 1:41:55Speaker 1: good at it. But in that moment of like I've
- 1:41:58Speaker 1: heard that I'm not well, I feel differently. But in
- 1:42:01Speaker 1: that moment, in that moment of like it's go time,
- 1:42:04Speaker 1: your level of patience, uh, like you're projecting your own
- 1:42:09Speaker 1: like I'm doing this now, and it just you know,
- 1:42:11Speaker 1: it takes somebody that's not used to doing it as
- 1:42:14Speaker 1: much a little time to get comfortable or whatever. But
- 1:42:16Speaker 1: Pete stayed true to his own Yeah and yeah, my process,
- 1:42:22Speaker 1: and so I would always call him, uh resistant to
- 1:42:25Speaker 1: my mentoring and that he was resistant to the frenetic
- 1:42:29Speaker 1: nature of your mentoring uh strategy there, but he stayed
- 1:42:35Speaker 1: calm and like, I mean, that moment is intense, right,
- 1:42:38Speaker 1: like there's like two to three second window that you
- 1:42:43Speaker 1: gotta make the shot. And uh and with somebody like
- 1:42:46Speaker 1: barking in your ear, like go go, go, go go.
- 1:42:49Speaker 1: It is not a whisper. Yeah, it wasn't a whisper.
- 1:42:55Speaker 1: And he got it done. It was, it was. It
- 1:42:59Speaker 1: was a pretty fantastic moments. So seth. Yeah, man, I'm
- 1:43:04Speaker 1: gonna start watching more baseball too. Let's watch it together. Man,
- 1:43:08Speaker 1: we'll go AT's house there, but we'll get you, we'll
- 1:43:13Speaker 1: get your little computer out. You know what the beautiful
- 1:43:16Speaker 1: thing is is that you guys are two hours behind us,
- 1:43:20Speaker 1: so at five so seven h five Eastern time is
- 1:43:23Speaker 1: when the game starts at five oh five. When business
- 1:43:27Speaker 1: hours are done. You guys can chill, relax, hanging out
- 1:43:30Speaker 1: the office for the extra hour or so. Then I
- 1:43:33Speaker 1: gotta go home make dinner, or you could watch it
- 1:43:35Speaker 1: while making dinner. It's a relaxing game to watch. Yeah,
- 1:43:39Speaker 1: fantastic swinging in the miss. There's a lot of that,
- 1:43:44Speaker 1: by the way, a lot of failure. All right, man,
- 1:43:48Speaker 1: do you got any thing you wanna final thing you
- 1:43:50Speaker 1: want to add? Yeah, um, just kind of not just
- 1:43:54Speaker 1: learning from you, Steve, but just kind of learning from everybody. Um,
- 1:43:58Speaker 1: I mean everyone has just I mean, Cody, I've never
- 1:44:03Speaker 1: knew dogs were used to hunt mountain lines. That's just
- 1:44:07Speaker 1: a whole different world. The hunting that was, that's just nuts.
- 1:44:11Speaker 1: Did you know they were used the round up stray cattle.
- 1:44:14Speaker 1: I learned that just right now. And that your dogs
- 1:44:17Speaker 1: are just multitalented and uh, I mean to be able
- 1:44:22Speaker 1: to manage that and I mean that's that sounds like
- 1:44:25Speaker 1: an absolute rodeo. It's a cool feeling for sure. Yeah,
- 1:44:28Speaker 1: that's that's nuts. Um, I mean hell, I mean what
- 1:44:33Speaker 1: you do like on that ranch. I mean I just
- 1:44:35Speaker 1: kind of saw like this small little sample size of it.
- 1:44:38Speaker 1: But damn man, you're a fucking jack of all trades
- 1:44:41Speaker 1: and that's that's awesome to see, like a true outdoorsman.
- 1:44:44Speaker 1: True uh, just true cowboy like it's in southern Colorado.
- 1:44:50Speaker 1: That's that's it, man. I mean I feel like you're
- 1:44:53Speaker 1: part of a dying breed. I mean, honest, just you Like,
- 1:44:58Speaker 1: I'm not a cowboy, you're not a cowboy, but you're
- 1:45:02Speaker 1: an X fishing guide Like you're there when I don't
- 1:45:05Speaker 1: think we mentioned that, um that we went fly fishing
- 1:45:09Speaker 1: for an hour and a half, an hour and a half, Um,
- 1:45:13Speaker 1: I mean it was that was awesome. I mean, I mean, Seth,
- 1:45:16Speaker 1: you're there taking pictures and you spot in the buck
- 1:45:19Speaker 1: and UM, I mean I think you're the the closest
- 1:45:24Speaker 1: one to to my age, right, Matt, how old are you? You?
- 1:45:29Speaker 1: So you're younger, so I guess me and you are
- 1:45:32Speaker 1: kind of the the young I mean, I'm the youngest one,
- 1:45:36Speaker 1: but I feel like me and you kind of connect
- 1:45:37Speaker 1: on kind of like a similar wavelength from a similar lens.
- 1:45:41Speaker 1: And um, I mean I mean, Rick, I mean, I
- 1:45:46Speaker 1: have a hell of a hell of respect from what
- 1:45:49Speaker 1: you do because you have to get the right angles.
- 1:45:51Speaker 1: And um, being a part of the baseball world, I know,
- 1:45:54Speaker 1: kind of like all the camp I don't know it,
- 1:45:57Speaker 1: but I'm familiar with having to get the different takes
- 1:45:59Speaker 1: a different angles, changing the lens, the light. Um. And
- 1:46:03Speaker 1: I can't imagine how difficult that is, Like moving around quietly,
- 1:46:08Speaker 1: not being able to make a sound sort of quietly.
- 1:46:12Speaker 1: That's extremely quiet, while Steve's yelling at you the whole time.
- 1:46:16Speaker 1: That's that's that's that's why one of the best parts
- 1:46:18Speaker 1: was watching Steve over last. It's more of a stair
- 1:46:25Speaker 1: than it's yells of love. Lastly, Steve, I felt like, um,
- 1:46:31Speaker 1: I don't know, it's like the way that you kind of,
- 1:46:34Speaker 1: I mean rec put it in a really good in
- 1:46:35Speaker 1: a really good way, like you were mentoring me because
- 1:46:38Speaker 1: I haven't hunted since, um since my grandpa pass when
- 1:46:42Speaker 1: I was in I haven't and then after that, like
- 1:46:46Speaker 1: I was in college and baseball kind of took over.
- 1:46:50Speaker 1: And I've always had this affinity for um, like outdoor
- 1:46:54Speaker 1: activities and all right, and being able to come out
- 1:46:58Speaker 1: here and do this, and and you being like one
- 1:47:01Speaker 1: of the main mentors. I feel like all of you
- 1:47:02Speaker 1: guys were mentors in a way, but Steve, like the
- 1:47:06Speaker 1: way that you and the cool thing is is like
- 1:47:09Speaker 1: even though it's like the first day, like you weren't
- 1:47:11Speaker 1: afraid to say shit, like you just like Pete, stop
- 1:47:14Speaker 1: stomping around, quit dragging your feet, Like I felt like
- 1:47:17Speaker 1: you're the older brother, like I never had like that
- 1:47:20Speaker 1: with me into shape, but did it in a way
- 1:47:22Speaker 1: where it's like you cared what I did, like, um,
- 1:47:26Speaker 1: like letting me take that first shot on the deer,
- 1:47:29Speaker 1: like trying to work your ass off, putting me in
- 1:47:31Speaker 1: that position to Um to have a successful hunt. Like
- 1:47:35Speaker 1: that's like, I'm so appreciative of that. I'm appreciative of
- 1:47:38Speaker 1: all you guys. Matt, like this is your first shoot,
- 1:47:41Speaker 1: like you're a rookie on this thing. I know he's
- 1:47:43Speaker 1: not on the pod, but like, I mean this whole
- 1:47:45Speaker 1: crew and then Um and then Matt Um the owner.
- 1:47:49Speaker 1: I mean, hell, this is a this is a team
- 1:47:51Speaker 1: effort in um, all you guys kind of teaching me
- 1:47:55Speaker 1: different different little things of the big world about oars
- 1:48:00Speaker 1: and outdoor activities. I mean, I'm just so appreciative just
- 1:48:03Speaker 1: to just to be a part of this. So I
- 1:48:06Speaker 1: can't thank you having me for just all this. This
- 1:48:09Speaker 1: is I'm going to remember this for the rest of
- 1:48:11Speaker 1: my life. This is this is fucking electric. So thank you,
- 1:48:15Speaker 1: thank you. I can't thank you enough. Thank you many.
- 1:48:18Speaker 1: Thank Pelso. The power Platform, the Power Platform. So that's ps.
- 1:48:31Speaker 1: To the to the final note, Steve mentioned that the
- 1:48:35Speaker 1: that we're on in the episode, it's going to be
- 1:48:38Speaker 1: aired as just the Platform, but just a platform called
- 1:48:42Speaker 1: the platform, the platform called but Cody's just like, we
- 1:48:45Speaker 1: don't got a name for it, and uh, platform it's
- 1:48:49Speaker 1: only like two months old. Because yeah, Cody Cody Coda
- 1:48:55Speaker 1: built that thing, right, Yeah, I had help from a
- 1:48:57Speaker 1: couple of friends, but yeah, exactly. And then he's just like,
- 1:49:00Speaker 1: we don't got a name for it. So I was
- 1:49:01Speaker 1: just like Pete five form, like no, that's that can't
- 1:49:04Speaker 1: do that, and it was like power the power platform,
- 1:49:07Speaker 1: and like platform is sweet though, Yeah, yeah, it's built there.
- 1:49:11Speaker 1: I think it's important to mention because Matt does a
- 1:49:13Speaker 1: whole bunch of haunts for wounded vets and so it's
- 1:49:17Speaker 1: a way to get like is it full on like
- 1:49:20Speaker 1: chair accessible Exactly. We're gonna put a ramp on it
- 1:49:23Speaker 1: and we wheeloks there. Wheelchair accessible. Yeah, super cool place
- 1:49:28Speaker 1: for the veterans wounded warriors to come and enjoy what
- 1:49:32Speaker 1: we have for sure. So it's power platform. Boom, got
- 1:49:37Speaker 1: it all right, Pete, thanks again, Thank you, thank you
- 1:49:41Speaker 1: everyone for having until next time. Man. Okay, everyone, if
