- 0:00Hello. This is Cameron Cortejano with the Becker's
- 0:03Dental and DSO review podcast.
- 0:05Thrilled to be joined today by doctor Quan
- 0:07Watson, founder and CEO of Care Mobile.
- 0:11Doctor Watson, thank you so much for being
- 0:12here today. Thanks for having me.
- 0:15Awesome. For some of our listeners who may
- 0:18not be familiar, can you just share a
- 0:19little bit about your background and and what
- 0:21led you to StartCare Mobile?
- 0:24Yeah. So I've been a dentist now for
- 0:26twenty six years, graduated from the University of
- 0:29Kentucky in 1999.
- 0:32I owned a couple of practices over that
- 0:34period of time.
- 0:36One practice was more of a working class
- 0:38practice in West Louisville, but I also started
- 0:41the de novo practice in 2007
- 0:44in a more affluent side of
- 0:46town. So those practices,
- 0:49became the dental director for DentaQuest for the
- 0:51state of Kentucky.
- 0:52And, Care Mobile actually came from
- 0:56the passion I have for serving
- 0:58the working class
- 0:59and providing services where others wouldn't.
- 1:02And I thought there's no better way to
- 1:04do that but in a mobile modality. So
- 1:07that's the background of care and a little
- 1:10bit about my experience as a dentist.
- 1:14Yeah. Thanks for filling in some of those
- 1:15gaps there.
- 1:17What what are some of the things you
- 1:18see in terms of access to dental care,
- 1:23in those kind of more traditional models
- 1:26that weren't being solved in particularly
- 1:29in some of those underserved
- 1:31communities that kinda led you to found Care
- 1:34Mobile and and have that that mobile on
- 1:36the care,
- 1:38on the go delivery.
- 1:40Yeah. I think the biggest thing was when
- 1:41I started working for DynaQuest and was managing
- 1:44their practices throughout the state
- 1:46back in around 2016.
- 1:48You know, I knew that access was a
- 1:50challenge being that I was,
- 1:53practicing in West Louisville.
- 1:55But it wasn't until I was going to
- 1:57Far Western Kentucky, which was, like, two and
- 1:59a half hours away from Louisville
- 2:02and running a practice there that I saw
- 2:04just how desperate patients were to receive care.
- 2:07And if,
- 2:08they couldn't get into the clinic that I
- 2:10was working in, they had to travel at
- 2:12least two and a half hours one way
- 2:14to one of the universities to be seen,
- 2:16where the weights were anywhere from,
- 2:19you know, three to four months. And if
- 2:21you're in pain and you have to wait
- 2:23three to four months and if you have
- 2:25to drive two and a half hours one
- 2:27way to find somebody to serve you, I
- 2:29just didn't find that as an equitable solution.
- 2:31So starting Care Mobile was the a way
- 2:33for me to provide
- 2:35equitable access to oral health care by bringing
- 2:38mobile units to these communities where brick and
- 2:40mortar options weren't there.
- 2:43Yeah. Absolutely. That makes a ton of sense.
- 2:46And and, obviously, mobile
- 2:49is a very different approach
- 2:52to dental care delivery. How does that model
- 2:55work? And and kinda can you just share
- 2:57how it compares to some of those traditional
- 2:59practices,
- 3:01from a a cost as well as scalability
- 3:04standpoint?
- 3:05Yeah. Definitely. So our model is even more
- 3:07unique. I I I would say a lot
- 3:09of times that I didn't
- 3:10create mobile dentistry. Mobile dentistry has been here
- 3:13for a long time, but the way we
- 3:14kinda do it is different.
- 3:16All of our vans are single chair.
- 3:18And so, basically, our assistants or our hygienist
- 3:21and our doctor can drive one of the
- 3:24vans
- 3:25and quickly and easily easily,
- 3:28have a three chair, four chair practice anywhere
- 3:32or you can scale it down based on
- 3:34volume
- 3:35and work out of one chair and do
- 3:37a higher,
- 3:38yielding procedure
- 3:39out of one chair. So, what I love
- 3:41about our model is the scalability
- 3:43and the way that we can actually scale
- 3:45up or scale down
- 3:47our business based on the needs of the
- 3:49patients on that particular day.
- 3:51And so, you know, one of the things
- 3:53that we do is utilize a lot of
- 3:55technology
- 3:56to
- 3:57enhance the ability for us to, provide these
- 4:00services. Of course, we're we're partnered with,
- 4:03Dentures Ascend and Henry Sign One and their
- 4:05cloud based platform helps us,
- 4:08be able to identify,
- 4:11our productivity
- 4:12prior to us going out,
- 4:15review our x rays and things of that
- 4:16nature virtually
- 4:18because it's in the cloud,
- 4:19and actually just,
- 4:21be more profitable because we utilize all the
- 4:24functionality of the tool
- 4:26to enhance the
- 4:27daily production goals that we have to set
- 4:30in order to be able to afford to
- 4:31do the services that we render.
- 4:34Yeah. That's
- 4:35super interesting just in terms of, like, the
- 4:37scalability, how you can do the one share
- 4:40if you want, but if you have some
- 4:42higher volume, you could you can bump it
- 4:44up to a couple. You touched a little
- 4:46bit on on technology. How
- 4:49does tech,
- 4:51teledentistry
- 4:51integrated systems,
- 4:53how do all those
- 4:55play
- 4:57in in making this model viable and efficient?
- 5:01It's essential to our workflow.
- 5:03So it's critically important that we utilize all
- 5:06of our
- 5:07clinical team at the
- 5:09their their most optimum,
- 5:12position. So, like, Kentucky is one of the
- 5:14states that allows general supervision hygiene. So our
- 5:17hygienist can do a lot of the,
- 5:20initial assessments
- 5:21of the patients,
- 5:22prevention,
- 5:24pre authorizations
- 5:26for SRPs if necessary,
- 5:29synchronous or asynchronous tele dentistry,
- 5:32scanning patients. So you having them do those
- 5:35things
- 5:36makes the time when the doctor goes out
- 5:38and provide services a lot more efficient
- 5:40because some of the initial paperwork and due
- 5:43diligence has already been done for the patients.
- 5:47Yeah. Definitely. How would I guess you compare
- 5:49it to your experiences
- 5:52in, like, brick and mortar practices just in
- 5:54terms of the efficiency and the use of
- 5:57technology?
- 5:59I believe, mobile requires more technology and more
- 6:02efficiency.
- 6:03Because as as we mentioned, it's the that
- 6:06you have so many variables,
- 6:08that you have to consider. Like, a lot
- 6:10of our doctors don't actually live in the
- 6:11communities that they serve. So we have the
- 6:14so we have to factor right in in
- 6:16their compensation.
- 6:17Is this worth them driving two hours to
- 6:19this remote location to serve this community on
- 6:22that particularly given day? And so, therefore, it's
- 6:25critically important that before they go out there,
- 6:27all the necessary pre authorizations
- 6:30and all the initial diagnostic work is completed
- 6:34for the patient prior to that appointment
- 6:36because it's not,
- 6:38enough revenue potential for that doctor to be
- 6:41in that community,
- 6:43seeing the patient for the first time and
- 6:44trying to figure out what they need to
- 6:46do.
- 6:47Our goal is to know exactly what we
- 6:49plan to do on those patients. And if
- 6:51the patient is,
- 6:53someone that our doctors can't serve,
- 6:55assist that patient in finding the appropriate place
- 6:58for them to go
- 6:59so they can get the services that they
- 7:01need rendered by somebody that's more suitable or
- 7:03capable of providing that service.
- 7:05Yeah. That makes a ton of sense.
- 7:08And then as as dentistry and the dental
- 7:12industry continues to just evolve,
- 7:14where do you see models like yours with
- 7:17Care Mobile
- 7:18kind of fitting into the future of dental
- 7:21care and and how patients are able to
- 7:23receive dental services?
- 7:25I think it's essential. You know, we know
- 7:27that,
- 7:29a third of the population is underserved.
- 7:32And, you know, the cost of
- 7:35putting a brick and mortar practice up in
- 7:37some of these
- 7:38remote locations just isn't feasible because you're not
- 7:41gonna be able to find the providers just
- 7:42to be in those areas
- 7:44or live in those areas a lot of
- 7:45times. So having a mobile
- 7:47option in utilizing
- 7:49our hygienist and,
- 7:51dental therapists
- 7:52or if necessary, even our assistants to do
- 7:55certain tasks that are in that community is
- 7:57the only way that we can truly provide
- 7:59equitable,
- 8:00access to everybody.
- 8:03Yeah. Absolutely. That makes a ton of sense
- 8:06to me.
- 8:08And then just just to close this out
- 8:10here, I just wanna get your thoughts on
- 8:12something that you're you're excited or optimistic about
- 8:15for the future of dentistry, whether that's related
- 8:18to mobile care or teledentistry or or really
- 8:20anything in the industry.
- 8:23Yeah. So what I'm most excited about is
- 8:25that we're in the process of creating a
- 8:27new
- 8:28iteration of our business by combining brick and
- 8:31mortar and mobile,
- 8:33the single term mobile van model with a
- 8:36brick and mortar,
- 8:37in particular markets. And what this will do
- 8:40is increase our number of, providers that will
- 8:43be able to fractionally get on the vans
- 8:45and and provide services in that modality or,
- 8:50still do the traditional brick and mortar, but
- 8:54mesh the technology that we use on the
- 8:57vans into the practices.
- 8:59It's always interesting to me when I go
- 9:01into some of these practices how they haven't
- 9:04advanced with technology as much as we have
- 9:06in the mobile,
- 9:07modality because we had to.
- 9:10So being able to push the envelope and
- 9:12utilize some of the tools we use in
- 9:13the mobile
- 9:14capacity in the brick and mortar practices and
- 9:17more of a hybrid model is It's something
- 9:19I'm super excited for going into 2026 and
- 9:21beyond.
- 9:23Awesome. Yeah. I think
- 9:25the the mortar
- 9:27brick and mortar practices really could
- 9:30even
- 9:31adopt technology even further.
- 9:33So super cool and looking forward to kinda
- 9:36seeing how that goes.
- 9:38Well, I wanna thank you for joining us
- 9:41today, doctor Watson, and sharing your valuable expertise
- 9:44and and insights.
- 9:45Been a pleasure speaking with you, and I
- 9:47look forward to connecting with you again in
- 9:49the future.
- 9:50Likewise. Thank you for the opportunity.
- 9:53Awesome. Thank you so much. Have a good
- 9:54one. Alright. Bye.
