- 0:23start your day off in a fantastic way.
- 0:27Hey everybody, good morning from the chicken coop.
- 0:31Did you ever encounter an Avon lady?
- 0:34You know my mother, when I grew up, my mother had an Avon lady.
- 0:38Bullshit. I won't say it was the same
- 0:40lady, but they were always referred to as the Avon lady and
- 0:44there was always one of them at our house.
- 0:46The woman could use Avon like nobody's business.
- 0:50She used it for everything. She was incredibly loyal to them
- 0:53and it wasn't until I was much older and had she moved out of
- 0:58the house and she didn't have an Avon lady anymore that she
- 1:02decided to start going to the Lancome counter.
- 1:05And no, this is not a commercial for either Lancome or Avon.
- 1:08This is just me telling a story about my mother.
- 1:10And I got to thinking about this last night because I was making
- 1:14my list for my Costco run today And I was like, interesting how
- 1:20my mom would stock up on things. And I would laugh at her for
- 1:24stocking up on things because I'd be like, why do you have to
- 1:27have? Because she always had the
- 1:28drawer filled with the Avon Products.
- 1:31And she'd say things to me like, well, what if they don't carry
- 1:34it anymore? And I was like, well, what if
- 1:37they don't? What if there's something
- 1:38better? She's like, but I like this.
- 1:39I don't need anything better. This is what I'm looking for.
- 1:42This is exactly what I want. So she would stock up.
- 1:45And when my mom passed away, I have to say I was laughing my
- 1:50her best friend and I were laughing at how much Avon she
- 1:53had and Lancome she had because she had found before she passed
- 1:57away an Avon lady and she was getting stuff again.
- 2:01And she was ordering because she's was not an online person,
- 2:04so she couldn't order it that way.
- 2:05And we were just like, Oh my gosh.
- 2:08And my, my mom's best friend would take took all of it so she
- 2:13could have it because I said I I don't want to throw it away.
- 2:15She's like, I'll use it no problem.
- 2:17So she took it and we were laughing.
- 2:19She goes, I won't need anything until I die.
- 2:21And she still jokes around with me after all these years later
- 2:24that my mom's been gone, that she still has some of those Avon
- 2:28Products. Now, what is this all about?
- 2:31Well, one, the Avon lady herself, OK, this whoever the
- 2:35these people were that made-up the, the, the, the identity of
- 2:40the Avon lady. I used to just marvel at them
- 2:44when I was a kid, that they would show up at the house, sit
- 2:47down with my mother, go over the book with her and influence her
- 2:51to get stuff and talk to her, show her samples.
- 2:55And I always thought this was so interesting to me, how somebody
- 3:01would come to your house and sell you something and you would
- 3:04sit and give them all of your attention.
- 3:06Now, that does not happen anymore unless you call somebody
- 3:09in for a quote and you're asking them to come in and show you
- 3:12something. But the point of today is
- 3:15thinking about the skills of the Avon lady.
- 3:18Holy cow. They were so far ahead of their
- 3:20time because they would sit there just like the Fuller Brush
- 3:23guys, who I never encountered, but I read stories about them,
- 3:27how they would come and they would show you everything and
- 3:29you would make your choices and then they would actually bring
- 3:33you the stuff back. Like the Avon lady would come
- 3:35back the following week or 10 days and she would have my mom's
- 3:38whole bag and she would drop it off with a new catalog.
- 3:42So the assumption was always the sale.
- 3:44The assumption was always moving forward, the end.
- 3:47Not only that, but they took the time to explain everything.
- 3:51And lo and behold, you know what?
- 3:53They really made business work, you know, and no joke if they
- 3:58made that effort. Like my mom had one Avon lady
- 4:02for the majority of my life until she passed away.
- 4:05That woman was there and then she started getting different
- 4:08ones who took over her territory once she passed away.
- 4:11But that woman was there all the time, all the time.
- 4:15And I can't remember her name. I try as I might, I can't
- 4:18remember her name, but I was too young.
- 4:20And I, I, I marvel at the, the tenacity that that just that,
- 4:27that they would take this on and do it house by house, piece by
- 4:31piece. And I start thinking about how
- 4:34IA lot of entrepreneurs listen, a lot of people who listen to
- 4:38this podcast own their own businesses and how we have to
- 4:41like figure out how we're going to market ourselves.
- 4:44What are we going to do for people to find us and seek us
- 4:48out? And the one lesson that we could
- 4:51take away from these Avon ladies is the first lesson.
- 4:55Not one lesson, but the first lesson is the tenacity of just
- 4:58being willing to be consistent. Holy cow, their consistency was
- 5:01outrageous. They stuck with it. 2 They would
- 5:05sit hands with hands down with people.
- 5:07They would sit and they would talk to them and they would
- 5:10actually make connection. And in this digital world that
- 5:13we live in, we forget that we are able to make these
- 5:19connections. We forget that we are able to do
- 5:22connection in, in a way that matters because if you're not
- 5:27connecting with your people, there's a chance they're not
- 5:29going to come back to you. And 3rd, they always assume the
- 5:33sale. They always assume that they
- 5:34were going to get something. And I whether they were
- 5:37disappointed or not, it didn't matter.
- 5:38They still came back. They still came back.
- 5:41So we are so fragile. Sometimes we get disappointed
- 5:44and then we don't try anymore. And I know, I know, I've done it
- 5:48myself and it's the wrong thing to do.
- 5:50That's why consistency matters. Staying on point with people
- 5:53matters and putting somebody in a position where there is no
- 5:57question they understand how much they mean to you and they
- 6:02you appreciate them. And because you know you, they
- 6:07see you, they see you showing up.
- 6:10You have to burn that into them. So take it for what it's worth,
- 6:15learn from the Avon lady, and I hope you guys have a blessed day
- 6:18and I'll see you tomorrow. Bye.
