- 0:30course Talent Outdoor, where he's the co host, and more importantly than all
- 0:34of that, he's our friend. How are you. I'm great, have
- 0:38a good thanksgivin. I did nice. We have people standing by. This
- 0:44is our fifth Wednesday, and on fifth Wednesdays, you know, I always
- 0:48forget to tell you guys to promote this on the Talent Outdoors Show the week
- 0:52ahead of time because you guys can't take live calls. Yeah, but we
- 0:57can. And so this is your chance. If you have a question for
- 1:00JD about anything related to firearms, personal defense, training, the industry in
- 1:06general. We've got emails coming in. It's Preston at iHeartRadio dot com and
- 1:11we have collars standing by. Anthony. You are on the air with JD.
- 1:14Johnson. Welcome, Hey morning, good morning. My questions really simple.
- 1:21I know it's illegal to shoot someone who's trying to break into your unoccupied
- 1:26vehicle, but is it illegal to draw your weapon. I've never had to
- 1:30draw my weapon. But if it is illegal to draw and display a weapon
- 1:34on someone who's breaking into your vehicle, well, it's going to depend on
- 1:40the situation. But if it's on your property, partner in your driveway,
- 1:45you can show force. Drawing a weapon is not drawing a weapon and pointing
- 1:49it at somebody can be interpreted as an aggravated assault. You need to have
- 1:55some justification for doing that. Drawing your weapon, keeping it the low ready
- 1:59down by your side, something like that, giving verbal commands, so forth
- 2:04and so on, probably not going to get you in trouble, now,
- 2:07you know that's all to be Uh, That is all speculative as far as
- 2:12what the law enforcement and investigation and you. You have to understand that witnesses
- 2:19may or may not tell the truth, and people see things differently. So,
- 2:23Anthony, I'm curious, is this related at all to your profession and
- 2:27the fact that you are a tow truck driver and I would guess on occasion
- 2:30you're towing cars that don't want to be towed. No, No, I
- 2:35never tow cars that never want to be towed. Okay, I only do
- 2:38breakdown, Okay, fair enough. Related. I was just I had a
- 2:44friend of mine who asked me know, I was like, I don't know.
- 2:46I think it might. I might not say, I'm not sure.
- 2:47So the scenarios, Yeah, the scenario. You know, your car is
- 2:52parked in your driveway, you your your alarm goes off, You grab your
- 2:54gun. It's not in a holster, it's in your hand, and you
- 2:58run out the door and go, hey, get out of my car.
- 3:00Uh. You know, you haven't committed a crime there, You're you're every
- 3:04all of this is taking place on your property. I'll just you know,
- 3:07and we can use force, but not deadly force to defend our property.
- 3:13You know, if somebody's out in your yard messing with your car, hitting
- 3:16your car with a baseball bat, and you want to go out there and
- 3:19physically intercede with that, you can, you can. You can use you
- 3:24know, not deadly force. There's a difference between force until that baseball bat
- 3:30comes against you. Then that would be a deadly forced situation at that point,
- 3:34right, right, right, So so we can use force to defend
- 3:37our property, just not deadly force. Okay, thank you, Thanks Anthony,
- 3:42appreciate the phone call. Let's go to Sue, who has been very
- 3:44patient. Hello, Sue, how are you fine? Thanks? I have
- 3:50a revolver UH thirty eight special, and inside the gun, some of the
- 3:57bullets are turning green. I've read about this happening when the bullets come in
- 4:01contact with leather, but they're not in contact with leather. Does it hurt
- 4:06the gun? Does it hurt the performance? Yeah? You need new bullets.
- 4:12We can help with that. We can help with that. Yeah.
- 4:15If it's starting to turn green, that's oxidization. So it's oxidizing either the
- 4:18brass or the nickel or whatever the material is. What are the material that
- 4:24the brass is made or that the cartridge is made out of, could be
- 4:26aluminum. That's an oxidation. Uh, it's oxidizing. It's it's rusting,
- 4:30essentially, but it's not rust because it's not iron. Does it matter if
- 4:34it's Sue? Are you carrying self defense rounds or are you carrying full metal
- 4:39jacket just standard range rounds in it? Okay, they're self defense? Okay,
- 4:45I was curious. Does it matter? J D? Yeah, No,
- 4:46No, it doesn't matter. Okay, that's that's brass is gonna eventually
- 4:50tarnish and mix with air and it could be some kind of chemical cleaning solution
- 4:56leather, any of those things that what they used to tan the leather with
- 5:00and calls it. So yeah, just swap those that you need to be
- 5:01swapping. Self defense am out about once a year anyway, Thank you,
- 5:06Sue. I appreciate it. Are old. Okay, yep, there you
- 5:11go, Thanks very much. See there you go. See this is why
- 5:14we're here. Fountain of Knowledge to my left. It's it's about the only
- 5:18time he's to the left of me. JD. Johnson with me this morning
- 5:23from the Talent Trading Group. I want to call us call now eight five
- 5:27zero two zero five WFLA, twelve minutes past the hour the Morning Show with
- 5:35Preston Scott and calls her coming in at eight five zero two zero five WFLA.
- 5:41Let me get to an email question here, JD. And it came
- 5:45from a listener of ours in Columbus, Georgia. I believe it is,
- 5:50and Mark writes in he says, my wife and I purchased firearms recently.
- 5:55We're going to check into training and receive membership to a local firing range with
- 6:00our purchase. My question, do you recommend we join an association such as
- 6:05the usc c A or purchase insurance in the event we are involved in an
- 6:11incident with our firearms and join the show from Columbus. Yes, there you
- 6:16go. No I am, I am absolutely all for it. I would
- 6:20tell you this, do your research carefully on what those differences. A bunch
- 6:26of those different companies out there, Right to bear US law shield, usc
- 6:30c A, the NRA has their own variation of it. Okay. Some
- 6:34of them are insurance that have limits on what they will represent and the amount
- 6:41of money they will spend to represent you. Some of them have different benefits
- 6:45and so forth. I like the more the prepaid legal we we use right
- 6:50to bear. I use right to bear personally. It's basically a retainer.
- 6:55It's a retainer, it's a lawyer. They let you pick your attorney,
- 6:58and there that is a big deal. Being able to pick your own attorney,
- 7:01because you know, a defense attorney here in this jurisdiction that practices in
- 7:06this court is going to be more valuable than a high dollar lawyer from Miami
- 7:11that's never been before. That's Charlie Aedelson, a judge up here. That's
- 7:15a big deal, you know, I mean it is, Yeah, so
- 7:19look at the different coverages, but absolutely it's it's a well spent money.
- 7:25All right. Let's go to Tom. Hi, Tom, thanks for calling
- 7:27in this morning. You're on the air with J. D. Johnson of
- 7:29the Talent Training Group. Yeah. So I've got a question. My son
- 7:34was going hunting the other day. He's seventeen, and I hadn't come across
- 7:39this before, but he asked me, he said, Dad, can I
- 7:42can I take the silencer and hunt suppressed this time? And I thought,
- 7:46hmm, well, I've got an NFA trust and he's on the trust.
- 7:51But he's only seventeen, so I didn't know if he could take that on
- 7:56his own and go hunting. If that was lee go on NFA site.
- 8:01I'm not sure that it is legal, to be honest with you, I
- 8:05would have to make a phone call and verify that I did not add my
- 8:09children to my trust until they turned eighteen. So and I know he can't.
- 8:16He can't purchase one. He can't. I'm not sure about possession.
- 8:20To be very honest with you, on the suppressor, even though he is
- 8:22on your trust. Once he turns eighteen, I know he's good. Yeah,
- 8:26so he's the last one. So, I mean he's only a few
- 8:28months away. But it was now that was that was the whole thing was
- 8:33man, I don't know, so no, yeah, I would, I
- 8:35would caution against that at this point in time. But you can get on
- 8:39ATF's website atf dot gov. They have a they have lawyers that will answer
- 8:45that question for you definitively instead of asking me on the radio. Thanks so
- 8:50much time. I appreciate your phone call. Let's get one more in here
- 8:52before the break. Ryan, thanks for calling in. You're on with JD.
- 8:56Good morning. Thank you for everything you do. And I was wondering
- 8:58about the storage of AMMO. I mean, we need to keep a little
- 9:03bit on hand, and I've had some for years that I keep in a
- 9:05gun safe. I mean, are we good for years, five years,
- 9:09ten years? Depends on the AMMO, I would say no. If it's
- 9:16rim fire like twenty two long rifle twenty two magnum seventeen HMR rim fire AMMO,
- 9:20it does not store well over time, hermetically sealed, keeping it away
- 9:26from the keeping AMMO away from humidity and drastic temperature change is the best way
- 9:33to keep it. And yes, center fire ammoll will last a long,
- 9:37long, long time in storage if you store it properly. But rim fire
- 9:41stuff rotate out. Yeah every year. Yeah, it dies it just the
- 9:46primers tend to die in twenty two. That's good to know. Is I've
- 9:50got a bunch of it sitting in a bag in my go shoot it my
- 9:52ten twenty two takedown. Yeah, go shoot it. Okay, all right,
- 9:56Ryan, thanks for calling in. Always appreciate the kind words. Bill
- 10:00Pete, you are next, what about you. We've got all the time
- 10:03in the world. Eight five zero two zero five WFLA. JD. Johnson
- 10:07with me of the Talent Training Group, and we are taking your calls.
- 10:13Callers standing by and lines available. Eight five zero two zero five WFLA eight
- 10:18five zero two zero five ninety three fifty two. It's our fifth Wednesday,
- 10:22and we celebrate that by giving you a chance to ask questions. I don't
- 10:26do this very often because it's generally not good for radio show hosts to hand
- 10:33over the time to the to the listeners. Because yeah, I'm trusting you,
- 10:39because you guys are awesome to ask great questions. Uh, and and
- 10:43I want to make our guests available when it makes sense, and so it
- 10:46does. And Bill has been patient. Hi Bill, how are you're on
- 10:48with JD? Hey? Good, Hey y'all do it this morning? Give
- 10:52you I've got a hunting AMMO question. I shoot a Ruger Hawk, got
- 10:58thirty'll six okay, shooting cor lock one hundred and eighty grain. My one
- 11:03hundred yard group is like two inches two and a half. And I'm wondering
- 11:09I bought this AMMO I think a couple of years ago, when like Remington
- 11:15was going through their changeover whatever. And I'm wondering if it's a quality control
- 11:20issue or is it user error or do I just need to find some different
- 11:24AMMO? Or what's up? Man? There is a there is a a
- 11:30ton of things that could be causing that. You know, Yeah, it
- 11:33could be a just an AMMO compatibility. It is really an art to finding
- 11:37the right cartridge that your gun likes. I would I would adjust down to
- 11:43maybe a one sixty five grain or one fifty grain the cor lock. Remington
- 11:48corlock bullet is a flat based bullet. You may try a boattail bullet.
- 11:54There's all kinds of things you can do. You're gonna at some point in
- 11:56time, you're gonna hit a sweet spot that in you go, that's the
- 12:00that's the round I want. And then you buy buy a case of it.
- 12:05It'll last you that for hunting. AMO, that'll last you, you
- 12:07know, ten boxes of it will probably last you the rest of your life.
- 12:09But if you can find that one you want to stay with the same
- 12:11lot number, You can get variances in accuracy from one lot of the exact
- 12:16same ammo one run to the next. You may be three to three or
- 12:22you know, three tenths of a grain difference in powder weight that can cause
- 12:24inaccuracy. Right, And of course would it be worthwhile because as I get
- 12:31older, I can't shoot as good as I could. Would it be worthwhile
- 12:35to like get cold or somebody to shoot that gun with whatever ammo just to
- 12:41rule out whether it's me or not. It never hurts to get a second
- 12:45opinion or a second shooter to say group's fine for me. Maybe you need
- 12:48to work on your technique a little bit, you know, and you may
- 12:52lighten the trigger, You may take a few ounces off the trigger pull weight.
- 12:56That may change things, may change the scope, that may change things
- 13:00all right, pilm, thank you very much. Thank you. And oh,
- 13:03by the way, that's what he said. I'd have said the same
- 13:07thing. Ever, you you look at me when my wife looks at me
- 13:15like I just said that I started speaking Mandarin Chinese or she gives me that
- 13:18look when I start saying things. Well, you are to me, Pete.
- 13:22Thanks for calling in. You're on with J. D. Johnson.
- 13:26Loran, sir, thanks for sharing your invaluable knowledge and experience. Well,
- 13:28thank you, sir. My question relates to the man who had the earlier
- 13:33question about what you can do if you see someone breaking in your car,
- 13:37Can you run around to the other side of the car, enter the car
- 13:39and shoot him through the window. That would be creating your own exiden season.
- 13:45I'm sorry if I don't speak English, Well, you can't create your
- 13:48own circumstances to put yourself in danger. You don't want to do that.
- 13:56You would be creating the problem there in the system, the court system,
- 14:00the laws are going to look very unfriendly on that. Callers standing by email
- 14:05questions waiting, still got time If you want to email me something, preston
- 14:09at iHeartRadio dot com. JD. Johnson of the Talent Training Group Talent Outdoors
- 14:13with us and we're taking your questions about whatever it is you want to talk
- 14:18about related to firearms, personal defense, ammunition. And we are joined now
- 14:24by Mark. Hi. Mark, thanks for being patient. You're on with
- 14:26JD. Good morning, Hery, y'all know the good her? Are you
- 14:31good? Good? J D? I know you us sinner, so I
- 14:35don't really know you at SAD, but I haven't seen you in a couple
- 14:37of years when Dixon gave you that Senator. I really love listening to y'all
- 14:46show. Don't get me wrong, now, Okay, I really love y'all
- 14:48show. I got a hard question here. I can't find any AMMO for
- 14:52my faught of Marlon thirty five back from Montgomery Wards, you know, back
- 14:56in the early eighties, and I can't find any more Ireland thirty five shells
- 15:01for that. Do you know of any place that may have a box or
- 15:05twenty? Well? There there are a few companies in the US that that
- 15:11specialize in obsolete AMMO, which is what you have an obsolete cartridge reads custom
- 15:18Ammo out of Oklahoma City. I believe, I swear I have to buy
- 15:22my thirty Remington for my old nineteen eleven manufacturer year Remington Model eight, so
- 15:31I would try them to start with. They do custom load AMO. There's
- 15:33also hindershots. They're not quite as much into the custom or the old stuff.
- 15:39But Read's custom ammo would be my first Internet search. It's r eedy
- 15:46r E D R E E D S Reads custom AMMO. I got it.
- 15:52Do you know what the grain was, because I want to say it's
- 15:56like one eight It was a big bullet. I think one eighty to two
- 15:58hundred grain is probably gonna be somewhere in there. If you can find the
- 16:02brass, you may find somebody that can load it for you by set of
- 16:04dies and go that route. The brass is gonna be the hard part.
- 16:08Yep, thank you, Mark, appreciate the phone call. Let's go to
- 16:11Randy. Hi, Randy, appreciate your patience. You're on with JD.
- 16:15Hey, good morning, no question for you, JD. I just wanted
- 16:18to mention I recently purchased a gun out of town and had to do a
- 16:23transfer, and to the convenience, I was going to have a transfer to
- 16:27another local store and they refuse to do it, so we change. So
- 16:32to Allen. Thank you went over there, picked it up and just wanted
- 16:34to commend you and here guys on their professionalism. They're amazing. They did
- 16:41a great job in handling everything for me. Ended up buying a whole stir
- 16:44some ammunition and picked up a rod real while I was there, So it
- 16:48all that well for you guys, and I just wanted to commend your guys
- 16:51on the amazing job they do at that store. Man, thank you so
- 16:53much. I will. I will certainly pass it on there to the guys
- 16:56this morning when I get to work. So and I appreh that that's good
- 17:00to hear. I normally hear the here. So you might not dock their
- 17:03pay this week? Yeah, you never know, how about that? May
- 17:06not beat them with a with a cat of nine tails when I get there.
- 17:08I got a got some questions coming in here from from listeners. Is
- 17:12there an advantage to a tritium front site as opposed to mounting an optic on
- 17:18a handgun? Well, it's all what you're comfortable with. Personally, I
- 17:23haven't put forth the effort and time involved in switching over to to red dot
- 17:27optics. I've got a lot of a whole lot of years and a whole
- 17:32lot of trigger pulls in my brain looking at a front sight. So I
- 17:36haven't personally transitioned over to red dot. My wife has. She loves it.
- 17:41So yeah, if you think it's all one or all the other,
- 17:45yeah, it needs to be. If for self defense purposes, you know,
- 17:48you need to have some consistency. I'm a I'm an iron sight guy.
- 17:52I'm I'm getting old. I've done it so many I've pulled the trigger
- 17:56so many times looking at the front site, and there is a there is
- 18:00a change. Your focal attention is in a different place when you're using a
- 18:03red dot. Your focal attention is on the target, the dot superimposed on
- 18:07the target. You know, it's not You're not supposed to look through the
- 18:11through a red dot and focus on the dot like you would with a scope,
- 18:15a scope, trifle, or a magnified optic. So I haven't made
- 18:22that transition. I feel like I'm more comfortable and faster and more accurate right
- 18:26now with traditional iron sights. That doesn't mean I can't learn. I just
- 18:32don't have the time to go dedicate to you know a thousand draws and trigger
- 18:36puls Well, I was gonna say, you have a standard that is just
- 18:40it's a certain standard and you don't want to really necessarily start all over.
- 18:44Correct. That's exactly right. If I was a new shooter, I would
- 18:47absolutely the red dot is the holographic site. Red dot is a better system,
- 18:52hands down. I'm never gonna argue it because it lets you put your
- 18:57focal attention where your folks attention is naturally, naturally wants to be, which
- 19:03is on the threat or on the target. So you're looking through yep,
- 19:07open, looking through the through the optic at the at the target, and
- 19:11the dot will magically because of our bond both eyes open, yep, yep.
- 19:15Absolutely. You can tell by my by my pause that there might be
- 19:21a bit of an issue with someone in the room as it relates to one
- 19:25eye versus two. Get to that more in a moment. Here more questions
- 19:30via email. Next with JD. Johnson. Okay, we've established I'm weird.
- 19:36Uh this just in uh JD. Johnson with me from the talent to
- 19:40training. I have trouble expressing myself sometimes, President not really. I think
- 19:44you know, sometimes brevity is is kind of appropriate, and I think it
- 19:48just sort of nailed it all right, given that there have been tens of
- 19:52thousands of military age illegal smuggled into the country by the Communist Party. What
- 19:56can be done at the county and state levels to organize them a delitia to
- 20:00defend our communities. That's David Lynn haven Man, it's worms. He said
- 20:07a mouthful there, and I don't disagree with him on his assessment, to
- 20:10be honest with you. There there's a state law in Florida against a against
- 20:15malicious Yeah, so there you go. You can if you had a sheriff
- 20:21in a county that wanted to have a for lack of a better word,
- 20:26the old school posse, you know, if you if you had a sheriff
- 20:30that wanted to put together people and and wave a magic wind over him and
- 20:33deputize them essentially as needed, as needed, you know, reserve auxiliary whatever
- 20:41you want to call it, UH type program the sheriff. My, a
- 20:45sheriff in a county might could put that down. And there are some that
- 20:48probably would do that in Florida. Yeah, you know, I want it's
- 20:52a it's a legal legislative issue though, and I don't want to. I'm
- 20:56you know, I stayed at a holiday inn once, but I'm not that
- 21:00that's a lawyer question. I want to point out to you, Dave,
- 21:03and I know you're listening. The state has there's a state wide grand jury
- 21:07that has basically released one hundred and forty some odd page report asking demanding that
- 21:15the state legislature deal with the issue of illegal immigration inside Florida. They recognize
- 21:21the problems, They've written a very long series of four or five presentments,
- 21:26and it's going to likely see some action in the legislative session. So that
- 21:30might alleviate a little bit of that inside of Florida. Yeah, it's his
- 21:37fear is in my mind, extremely valid. Right now, I can be
- 21:41scary. That is the scariest thing that I can think of off the top
- 21:45of my head, is that we have allowed a unarmed invasion of our country,
- 21:52maybe unarmed, well unarmed potentially you're mostly as opposed to a military when
- 21:56they walked across the border. How soon they got armed after they got across
- 22:00the border is another is another you know, scary possibility. Another question came
- 22:07in a follow up to Sue's question with your cartridges oxidizing, can you still
- 22:11fire the rounds? You can? It's not really an unsafe thing. I
- 22:15will caution you that you may have. You have to be very attentive to
- 22:18what you're doing. You may get a squib load, which is a round
- 22:22that goes off that's not powerful enough to send the bullet all the way through
- 22:26the barrel. So if it gets lodged in the barrel and you shoot at
- 22:30the fire behind it, you're gonna destroy your gun. Is that most likely
- 22:34to happen with a twenty two with a rim fire? It happens with any
- 22:38can happen with any cartridge. Okay, that's an underpowered squib load. They
- 22:44happen sometimes out of the box with brand new ammo. I've seen it ye
- 22:48where you where powder gunpowder didn't make it into or the right amount of powder
- 22:52didn't make it into the cartridge, so you just had a primer that spit
- 22:56the bullet, you know, halfway down the barrel. If you're not paying
- 22:59attention, you're shooting them rapid fire. Then you stack another one in there
- 23:03behind it, you bulge the barrel. You can throw the gun away,
- 23:04or at very least you'll have to buy a new barrel. You may have
- 23:07may damage other parts of the gun. It's like that scene from the from
- 23:11the movie Gettysburg where they talk about one load after another load after another load
- 23:15and no one's ever fired around. Yeah, well there's yeah, that was
- 23:21battlefield battlefield stress that they were. The soldiers were going through the motion of
- 23:26loading the gun and the cap on the on the nipple and pulling the trigger
- 23:30so it never fired. But they there's been tons of battlefield rifles in the
- 23:33Civil War collected that had numerous charges in them. This was fun. Thanks
- 23:37for coming by, Thank you enjoyed it. See you next week, Yes,
- 23:41Sir JD. Johnson with us next week. I've got all those things
- 23:45that we were going to talk about today in case you didn't call in.
- 23:47But boy, tons of more questions coming in. You're gonna have to stick
- 23:52around for a minute. Yeah, yeah, we're hang on. I'll get
- 23:55to your questions next more with J. D. Johnson next in the Morning
- 23:57show. All right, this is this is boneus. It's time here.
- 24:00We just got about two and a half minutes with JD. Johnson overtime with
- 24:06Talent Outdoors here and the Talent Training Group. Optic question, are holographic red
- 24:11dots better than the reflex? And what is the approximate and price with decent
- 24:15optic. They're essentially doing the same thing. Don't get caught up in semantics.
- 24:21Okay, they're essentially projecting a dot electronically or through light. They're projecting
- 24:29a dot. They work the same way. Depends on your vision. And
- 24:32try a bunch of different ones out. You'll find one that really matches with
- 24:34you as far as color and size and so forth and so on. You
- 24:40can get a really good optic for in the three hundred three and fifty dollars
- 24:45range US. Yeah, I don't recommend going cheap on optics. We see
- 24:48a we replace a lot of one hundred dollars optics that somebody bought one hundred
- 24:53dollars you know, one hundred dollars dot and amazingly equip working way. They
- 25:00are getting moved around, bumped around. They work, they're on the slide
- 25:04of the gun, they get they they're absorbing that recoil. They move every
- 25:07time you shoot. They don't live. The cheap ones don't live. Invest
- 25:11if you're gonna do this, invest in a good quality. I think I
- 25:15know the answer. I know Charlie's answer to this. The question is your
- 25:18thoughts on a burner on what a burner man I'm I know, I know,
- 25:25go ahead. His his idea and my idea the same. There there
- 25:27is no replacement for a firearm. It's is basically a paintball. That's not
- 25:34a paintball, it's a it's a pepper Yeah, it's a pepper ball.
- 25:37Now they have their place for in law enforcement. Uh, they're they're not
- 25:41reliable for self defense in a in a life threatening situation. I would not
- 25:47want to trust my life to somebody reacting to a non lethal he wol it
- 25:52be fair. It's one step above being unarmed. Yeah, I mean,
- 25:57it's better than nothing. I ain't sure it's better than a pocket knife if
- 26:03you're willing to use a pocket knife. But yeah, it gives you a
- 26:06little bit of distance, and it is something. It's not a replacement,
- 26:10it's not a substitute. Just fact to the matter. And there's a percentage
- 26:15of the population that doesn't get much of a reaction from pepper spray from pepper.
- 26:22Yeah. The type of people that you might encounter that you want to
- 26:25defend yourself from may not react to one at all. Yeah. So all
- 26:29right, buddy, thanks, thank you, enjoyed it all right. JD.
