Latest / Foul Territory / October without Judge? Bregman out too? Red Sox sign Mgr Chad Tracy long-term & pick up Breslow options
Transcript
- 0:03Speaker 1: It's one of those busy news days. A lot happening.
- 0:06Speaker 1: Ron Kratz. Pierzynski. Tracy.
- 0:10Speaker 2: Chad Tracy getting the extension he deserves, right? Rip that
- 0:14Speaker 2: interim tag off. AJ, the Red Sox manager, took over
- 0:17Speaker 2: when Boston was 12-17. And their record since then, I
- 0:22Speaker 2: will get for you momentarily.
- 0:24Speaker 1: But it is very good since he took over.
- 0:28Speaker 3: Yeah, it is very good. It is very good. It's
- 0:33Speaker 3: very good. He's been really good. I mean, it's like
- 0:36Speaker 3: about 15 games over, isn't it?
- 0:38Speaker 1: Yeah, even more. 74 and 55.
- 0:43Speaker 3: Almost 20 games over. That's pretty good.
- 0:45Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 0:47Speaker 2: It's an extension, though, so he'll be linked up with
- 0:50Speaker 2: Craig Breslow. They also picked up Craig Breslow's options. So
- 0:55Speaker 2: here's the deal. They get, what is it, two years
- 0:59Speaker 2: of Chad Tracy?
- 1:02Speaker 3: After this year.
- 1:04Speaker 1: After this year. Yeah, this is all coming in right
- 1:07Speaker 1: before the show started.
- 1:08Speaker 5: Didn't he want a Kurt Suzuki kind of contract?
- 1:12Speaker 1: No, no, hold up.
- 1:14Speaker 2: Yeah, everyone wants one, right? A one-year contract for Kurt Suzuki?
- 1:19Speaker 2: Don't get me started.
- 1:20Speaker 1: We could do another hour on that.
- 1:22Speaker 2: It's a three-year contract for Chad Tracy through 2029, so no,
- 1:26Speaker 2: it starts next year. He gets 27, 28, 29, which
- 1:29Speaker 2: is more of your standard contract for a manager, right? Like, hey,
- 1:33Speaker 2: if you sign someone You usually give them at least
- 1:36Speaker 2: a three-year window. There's very few two-year contracts. Maybe sometimes
- 1:39Speaker 2: if it's a manager who's thinking about retiring soon, whatever
- 1:42Speaker 2: it is. So he gets three years after this year,
- 1:44Speaker 2: which was his interim year. And then there's a club
- 1:46Speaker 2: option for 2030. The Red Sox also exercised the 2029
- 1:51Speaker 2: and 2030 options on Craig Breslau's contract.
- 1:54Speaker 1: So that will link them all together.
- 1:56Speaker 3: So he got exactly what he wanted when he got
- 1:58Speaker 3: rid of Alex Cora. He got control.
- 2:00Speaker 6: He hired his manager and he got an extension. So
- 2:04Speaker 6: It worked out great for Breslow and Chad Tracy and
- 2:07Speaker 6: Alex Cora too, because he's still getting paid like $ 7
- 2:09Speaker 6: million to do nothing and travel around the world.
- 2:12Speaker 3: So actually it worked out for everybody.
- 2:15Speaker 2: And then he'll probably sign for next year if he
- 2:17Speaker 2: wants it with the Phillies or the Mets.
- 2:20Speaker 3: Or Mariners.
- 2:21Speaker 1: Or Mariners. So everything's working out for everyone, right?
- 2:26Speaker 2: If you're Boston, you'll happily take that where it wasn't
- 2:29Speaker 2: working at the end there for Alex Cora at the
- 2:31Speaker 2: end of his contract or towards the end, I guess
- 2:33Speaker 2: he still had a year in almost two years left
- 2:35Speaker 2: on it.
- 2:36Speaker 1: And Chad Tracy has led this team on an awesome run.
- 2:38Speaker 2: Ken Rosenthal did his mea culpa on fair territory today
- 2:42Speaker 2: to give credit to really Craig Breslow. I mean, he
- 2:44Speaker 2: wasn't doubting necessarily Chad Tracy, but really to Craig Breslow,
- 2:47Speaker 2: who was getting a lot of heat.
- 2:49Speaker 1: So congratulations to Boston. They're going to be in the playoffs.
- 2:52Speaker 2: And actually our lead story has to do with.
- 2:56Speaker 1: Boston's opponent here. And it is a big one. Let's charge. Yeah,
- 3:04Speaker 1: charging the mound presented by Fox One.
- 3:06Speaker 2: Aaron Judge is likely to miss the wildcard round for
- 3:12Speaker 2: the New York Yankees. That is really not good news.
- 3:16Speaker 2: So what you're going to have here is a raised
- 3:18Speaker 2: team that gets a bye in the AL East, and
- 3:20Speaker 2: that's why the division is so important, AJ. The Yankees
- 3:23Speaker 2: play the Red Sox in the Bronx in the wildcard round,
- 3:27Speaker 2: best out of three, and what we learned is is
- 3:30Speaker 2: that they are planning on Judge not being a part
- 3:33Speaker 2: of that. This, according to Aaron Boone, he had a
- 3:35Speaker 2: PPP injection in his right calf during the off day.
- 3:38Speaker 2: Do they mean PRP? It says PPP, Brian Hoke.
- 3:42Speaker 1: PRP, right?
- 3:43Speaker 3: That's my guess. Maybe it is a PPP. They have
- 3:45Speaker 3: a new one. Like the microsurgery scuba head.
- 3:50Speaker 1: What was it called? Micro... There is a PPP. Okay.
- 3:55Speaker 2: So he had a PPP and that's why we're not doctors.
- 3:58Speaker 2: If you want more on that stuff, that's injury territory.
- 4:00Speaker 2: That's a Will Carroll show. But anyway, AJ, this soleus strain,
- 4:05Speaker 2: I did learn a little bit about this the other day.
- 4:07Speaker 2: Typical timetable is really two to three weeks, more than
- 4:10Speaker 2: the three to six week timetable. So it's apparently the
- 4:14Speaker 2: one that you don't want to hurt within the calf.
- 4:16Speaker 2: Not that you want the calf at all, but this
- 4:17Speaker 2: is the bad spot where it affects you when you're standing,
- 4:21Speaker 2: when you're running, when you're walking in a pretty negative way.
- 4:24Speaker 2: So that's what they're dealing with right now. And they're
- 4:26Speaker 2: up against a clock that I think might even be
- 4:28Speaker 2: a problem if they advance the division series.
- 4:31Speaker 3: Yeah, it's tight. It's tight.
- 4:32Speaker 6: I mean, if you look three weeks from now, they're
- 4:34Speaker 6: into the division series. You go four weeks, you're into
- 4:37Speaker 6: the LCS if they get there. So it's a problem
- 4:41Speaker 6: with what they're doing and where they run into. And
- 4:44Speaker 6: it sucks for Jaron Judge. It sucks for the Yankees.
- 4:46Speaker 6: But Buck Showalter said it yesterday. This is one of
- 4:49Speaker 6: those things where you got to get back on your feet,
- 4:51Speaker 6: and we've beaten this to death, that he should have
- 4:53Speaker 6: maybe gone on a rehab.
- 4:54Speaker 3: I don't know. He chose not to. Could this have
- 4:56Speaker 3: happened on a rehab? Sure, 100%. But I know this.
- 4:59Speaker 3: When you start dealing with calves, and Krauts, I think,
- 5:02Speaker 3: will agree with me on this, and hamstrings, they linger
- 5:05Speaker 3: and linger and linger and linger, and they never go away,
- 5:07Speaker 3: it seems like, until you actually just stop for a
- 5:09Speaker 3: long time. And then once you think they're okay, you
- 5:12Speaker 3: have to take another week because then you'll be okay
- 5:15Speaker 3: because every– I mean, I can't tell you how many
- 5:17Speaker 3: times I've seen guys with calves and hamstrings. They go,
- 5:21Speaker 3: they get better, they go on rehab for a couple games,
- 5:23Speaker 3: they come back to the big leagues, and you know
- 5:24Speaker 3: what happens?
- 5:25Speaker 6: They pull it again or they re-injure it. Or they
- 5:27Speaker 6: do the other one, which is even crazier to me.
- 5:29Speaker 6: So it's a funky injury that's hard to come back from.
- 5:32Speaker 6: Let's just hope Aaron Judge gets healthy and is able
- 5:34Speaker 6: to come back if the Yankees are around long enough.
- 5:37Speaker 5: I feel like hamstrings guys understand they have a different protocol,
- 5:41Speaker 5: but you're right, calves, obliques– it's like it just lingers.
- 5:46Speaker 5: Because how do you test it without testing it, without
- 5:49Speaker 5: pushing it? It puts a lot of strain on it.
- 5:52Speaker 5: And a PPP is a platelet poor.
- 5:57Speaker 3: I forget it.
- 5:58Speaker 5: Anyway, instead of platelet rich, it's PRP, it's PP, it's
- 6:02Speaker 5: platelet poor. Anyway, it doesn't really matter. All that matters,
- 6:05Speaker 5: this so negatively affects this Yankees team.
- 6:09Speaker 3: Did they win without it? Absolutely.
- 6:11Speaker 5: I mean, you can pull the stats up, you know,
- 6:13Speaker 5: the Yankees offense with Judge, the record's 41-25.
- 6:19Speaker 3: Yankees offense without Judge, 48-41. You know what?
- 6:22Speaker 5: In the American League, that's elite. But it's not as good.
- 6:27Speaker 5: The part that's crazy is the runs per game. Almost
- 6:30Speaker 5: a run per game less with Judge out of the lineup.
- 6:34Speaker 5: It just affects this team more than I think Yankees
- 6:39Speaker 5: fans will let on. But I think the team has
- 6:42Speaker 5: to figure it out. They have to get more from Ramos.
- 6:46Speaker 5: I'm not even sure what Jazz's prognosis is, but you're
- 6:50Speaker 5: up against it. Even if Judge does come back, let's
- 6:52Speaker 5: say for the ALDS, it's the same issue. He hasn't
- 6:57Speaker 5: played on it. He hasn't pushed it. So whenever he
- 7:00Speaker 5: comes back, if he can come back, how limited is
- 7:03Speaker 5: he going to be?
- 7:06Speaker 2: He's had his moments in the postseason, too, where he's
- 7:08Speaker 2: really choked and for lack of a better term.
- 7:12Speaker 1: Now, last year, though, he was good.
- 7:13Speaker 3: I mean, he's done– he's had some moments, too, where
- 7:17Speaker 3: he's done really good things.
- 7:18Speaker 1: Yeah, last year he was better. You didn't let me
- 7:20Speaker 1: finish my sentence. I said he's had his moments where
- 7:22Speaker 1: he's choked.
- 7:23Speaker 7: I stand by that.
- 7:23Speaker 3: I want to cut you off because you said he choked. Like,
- 7:25Speaker 3: I don't stand by choking. I agree.
- 7:27Speaker 5: Really?
- 7:28Speaker 2: You think before last year's postseason there weren't some moments
- 7:30Speaker 2: where you're like, what the heck is going on here?
- 7:33Speaker 3: Yeah, but not choke.
- 7:33Speaker 5: There's plenty of guys– There's plenty of guys that do bad.
- 7:39Speaker 5: In 2018, I'll always bring it up. Look at Cody
- 7:42Speaker 5: Bellinger's stats for, he won the NLCS MVP. Look what
- 7:47Speaker 5: his stats were for the NLCS. Choked or just everybody
- 7:53Speaker 5: had a really high expectation for Judge. You can't hit
- 7:56Speaker 5: 62 home runs and go into the postseason and everyone
- 7:58Speaker 5: would be like, yeah, you know what?
- 8:01Speaker 3: He did okay.
- 8:02Speaker 5: It's either going to be, yes, he did bad.
- 8:05Speaker 3: I get that.
- 8:05Speaker 5: He did not do good. But choked is like, ah,
- 8:10Speaker 5: it makes my skin crawl a little bit.
- 8:14Speaker 1: Okay. Anyway, the point was last year he was good
- 8:17Speaker 1: in the postseason. Gotcha. Last year he was good in
- 8:21Speaker 1: the postseason. That was the only point there.
- 8:23Speaker 2: And with the Yankees not having the slug when he's out,
- 8:27Speaker 2: I actually think I'd have to look back, but remember
- 8:30Speaker 2: a lot of knocks. I mean, I know he had
- 8:31Speaker 2: the big homer, but he had a lot of knocks.
- 8:33Speaker 2: Like the batting average I think was good last year too.
- 8:35Speaker 2: That's been a problem sometimes. You're like, the Yankees just
- 8:37Speaker 2: need to get a little traffic going here. So add
- 8:40Speaker 2: all of that up right now.
- 8:41Speaker 1: It's a big problem.
- 8:43Speaker 2: It's a top hitter in the sport missing for a
- 8:46Speaker 2: team that's very reliant on him. We'll see if they
- 8:49Speaker 2: can pitch their way through the postseason in the American League.
- 8:52Speaker 1: What we'll do is.
- 8:53Speaker 6: We'll– Scott, we had Carlos Rodon on yesterday. He's their
- 8:56Speaker 6: fourth guy. I mean, they have pitching. They have the
- 8:59Speaker 6: pitching to get through it. I mean, their bullpen's a
- 9:01Speaker 6: little banged up right now, but they have the starting
- 9:03Speaker 6: pitching to get through it.
- 9:05Speaker 3: And we'll see.
- 9:06Speaker 1: They'll have to win.
- 9:07Speaker 2: Like they did last year in the wildcard round, Kratz, right?
- 9:10Speaker 2: Like the games were pretty low scoring. They held the
- 9:12Speaker 2: Red Sox in those three games to four runs.
- 9:15Speaker 5: Even the one that the Red Sox won, Garrett Crochet dealt.
- 9:20Speaker 5: So it's, yeah, it's very low scoring.
- 9:23Speaker 1: 3-1 was that game.
- 9:24Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 9:25Speaker 5: But yeah, I mean, so you're going to have, it's
- 9:28Speaker 5: going to be low scoring. AJ always says it. You
- 9:31Speaker 5: hit homers, which the Yankees do. And good starting pitching.
- 9:36Speaker 5: That's what wins the postseason. The anomaly was the 24
- 9:40Speaker 5: Dodgers where it was the bullpen. That helped them win it.
- 9:43Speaker 5: But good starting pitching play. So the Yankees, they'll be fine.
- 9:49Speaker 5: But nobody's going to sit here and argue that he
- 9:53Speaker 5: was 13 for 27 last year in the postseason. Who's
- 9:56Speaker 5: going to step up and replace that? I don't care
- 10:00Speaker 5: if somebody does step up and replace it. Then you
- 10:02Speaker 5: would also have Judge in the lineup to add whatever
- 10:05Speaker 5: he was going to add. So it's just a tough
- 10:08Speaker 5: blow for a team that clearly needs him in the
- 10:11Speaker 5: lineup but can still slug, which plays in the postseason.
- 10:15Speaker 6: There is no replacing it. You can't replace it because
- 10:18Speaker 6: not only– His numbers.
- 10:19Speaker 3: It's his presence. You can't replace it. I'm sorry.
- 10:23Speaker 6: I don't care who you put in there because, like
- 10:25Speaker 6: Kratz said, this is why war is so ridiculous because, oh,
- 10:30Speaker 6: war ends above replacement.
- 10:32Speaker 3: Who are you replacing him with? And you can't replace
- 10:35Speaker 3: a person in the lineup.
- 10:35Speaker 6: You can't replace PCA in the lineup because it's not
- 10:38Speaker 6: only when PCA comes up to bat, as a catcher,
- 10:40Speaker 6: you start looking over your shoulder like, all right, we're
- 10:43Speaker 6: at the seven or the eighth hitter. How do we
- 10:45Speaker 6: get guys out before PCA or Aaron Judge or whoever
- 10:49Speaker 6: it is comes up to hit so we can minimize
- 10:51Speaker 6: the damage they have the impact to do?
- 10:53Speaker 3: It's not just that one thing.
- 10:55Speaker 6: It's how they affect the lineup overall and how they
- 10:58Speaker 6: affect other people.
- 10:59Speaker 3: In that lineup.
- 11:01Speaker 2: Well, let's keep this going. Adam Adabino is going to
- 11:03Speaker 2: join us on the other side. So a quick shout
- 11:06Speaker 2: out to how you can catch a lot of post-season action,
- 11:09Speaker 2: including the World Series streaming live on Fox and the
- 11:13Speaker 2: Fox One app exclusively on Fox or the Fox One
- 11:15Speaker 2: app at home or on the go, live or on demand.
- 11:17Speaker 1: Never miss a moment. Stream now.
- 11:18Speaker 2: Start your Fox One three-day free trial today at foxone.com. Okay, SeatGeek,
- 11:26Speaker 2: we are in the final stretch, literally the final week
- 11:28Speaker 2: of the regular season, which feels weird to say. And
- 11:31Speaker 2: let's see where we want to grab a ticket. AJ,
- 11:34Speaker 2: now you can narrow this down a little bit. Like
- 11:36Speaker 2: there are some quotes garbage games, and then there are
- 11:38Speaker 2: games that mean everything for the AL Central, for the
- 11:41Speaker 2: AL West, and for seeding on the National League wildcard side.
- 11:45Speaker 3: Well, I'm going to Boston.
- 11:46Speaker 6: I'm wearing my Red Sox gear, my Red Sox uniform,
- 11:48Speaker 6: and my Red Sox hat, and everything else when I
- 11:51Speaker 6: played for the Red Sox. So they can beat Cleveland,
- 11:53Speaker 6: and the White Sox, which they're going to do, will
- 11:56Speaker 6: win the AL Central and get the bye. So if
- 11:59Speaker 6: I had anything, I'd go to Boston. You'd see me
- 12:00Speaker 6: sitting there with my pom-poms. I'd cheer, cheer, cheer, nothing.
- 12:03Speaker 6: Nothing against Steven Vogt and the Guardians, but we all
- 12:05Speaker 6: know I'm a White Sox fan, and I'll I think
- 12:07Speaker 6: they're going to win the division.
- 12:08Speaker 3: So let's go Red Sox.
- 12:11Speaker 1: Sox in general for you this week.
- 12:13Speaker 3: Yeah, I'm a Sox fan.
- 12:15Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 12:15Speaker 2: Hey, Kratz, so Philly's trying to figure out their seating, right,
- 12:19Speaker 2: on the National League wildcard side. Here comes the Brewers
- 12:23Speaker 2: if you want to grab a ticket for that one.
- 12:25Speaker 2: The Brewers don't seem to be– I mean, I don't
- 12:26Speaker 2: want to say taking their foot off the pedal because
- 12:29Speaker 2: they did ease Jacob Mizorowski in his last start, but
- 12:32Speaker 2: I think they're going to give him a longer leash
- 12:34Speaker 2: again in his final start before his– division series start
- 12:38Speaker 2: that we'll see eventually from him after the bye but
- 12:40Speaker 2: not a fun team to face if you're Philly right now.
- 12:44Speaker 5: Or maybe a little bit of a measuring stick they're
- 12:46Speaker 5: not intimidated by the team but you look at it
- 12:50Speaker 5: and you go this is a team that knows how
- 12:52Speaker 5: to win games we have to figure out how to
- 12:54Speaker 5: win games in the next three weeks if we want
- 12:57Speaker 5: to accomplish what we what we want to do and
- 12:59Speaker 5: you know what they kind of for for a month
- 13:01Speaker 5: there they went with the whole like You know, we're
- 13:04Speaker 5: going to put the ball in play and make good
- 13:05Speaker 5: swing decisions. You're going to watch that the whole night
- 13:08Speaker 5: against the Brewers. So, to me, I'm going to the
- 13:10Speaker 5: game tomorrow night. So, go and seat geek and you
- 13:12Speaker 5: can get a seat right next to me.
- 13:16Speaker 3: What?
- 13:17Speaker 1: Well, you'd have to tell us where you're sitting. What's up, AJ? True.
- 13:20Speaker 3: Here's an interesting one for you. You know what else
- 13:22Speaker 3: is an interesting series? The Angels. Who do the Angels play?
- 13:24Speaker 3: I'm not sure who the Angels play, but I think. Athletics?
- 13:27Speaker 3: They play the A's.
- 13:28Speaker 6: The Angels have never lost 100 games in a season.
- 13:31Speaker 6: They're the only team that has never done it. They
- 13:34Speaker 6: have 96 losses. Can they get to 100? That is
- 13:37Speaker 6: a big question. They have to go 3-3 the last
- 13:41Speaker 6: six games.
- 13:43Speaker 3: Wow.
- 13:44Speaker 1: That's actually a fun stat.
- 13:45Speaker 2: I would not have expected the Angels to be the
- 13:47Speaker 2: only team without a 100-loss season. Angels fans, you should
- 13:51Speaker 2: be giving your hard-earned money and going to those games
- 13:53Speaker 2: on Seagate because you have a new owner, so you
- 13:55Speaker 2: should be all pumped. The season is a win just
- 13:57Speaker 2: based on that news alone. Territory 10, 10% off. MLB
- 14:00Speaker 2: tickets on SeatGeek. Make sure you check that out for postseason.
- 14:03Speaker 2: Official ticket marketplace of Major League Baseball is there for
- 14:06Speaker 2: you along the ride.
- 14:08Speaker 1: As games are sold out, you know where to go. SeatGeek,
- 14:10Speaker 1: pick your seat.
- 14:11Speaker 2: This tweet from Solely Reds, and this was confirmed, the
- 14:14Speaker 2: Reds have five of the worst nine hitters in all
- 14:18Speaker 2: of baseball, minimum 150 plate appearances. Nick Kroll traded for
- 14:23Speaker 2: four of those players. I mean, one of them is
- 14:24Speaker 2: Key Brian Hayes that they traded for last year, and
- 14:27Speaker 2: we were like, what is that?
- 14:28Speaker 1: And it's not. Working. That's a bad number, though. Half
- 14:33Speaker 1: the worst hitters out of nine, just about, are on
- 14:36Speaker 1: the Reds. That's not good.
- 14:38Speaker 3: That usually means you're not scoring a lot of runs.
- 14:42Speaker 1: In Cincinnati.
- 14:44Speaker 5: In Cincinnati. The Humidor is killing them. But that's what
- 14:47Speaker 5: Steve Trent said early in the year. He goes, yeah,
- 14:50Speaker 5: you know, if it's not Sal Stewart or Eli De
- 14:53Speaker 5: La Cruz, we're just not scoring. But, I mean, four
- 14:57Speaker 5: out of five of those guys... Traded for? That's a coin?
- 15:02Speaker 5: You're just hoping that some... Why are those guys not improving?
- 15:07Speaker 5: Or why is that trade... You're not even talking about money.
- 15:11Speaker 5: You're talking about trades. That has nothing to do with
- 15:14Speaker 5: the money that was spent.
- 15:17Speaker 3: Who are the hitters? Can you tell me who the
- 15:19Speaker 3: hitters are, Scott?
- 15:21Speaker 1: I don't have all the names.
- 15:22Speaker 3: Okay, well then never mind.
- 15:24Speaker 1: It's not in the rundown. I don't have everything memorized.
- 15:27Speaker 1: I have no idea.
- 15:29Speaker 3: Is it like Noel V.
- 15:30Speaker 1: Marte?
- 15:30Speaker 3: Is it like Marte is one of them? Noel V. Marte? No,
- 15:33Speaker 3: he was. I mean, 150 at-bats is not.
- 15:36Speaker 1: Yes, I mean, Noel V. Marte.
- 15:37Speaker 3: 150 plate appearances is not a lot. He was a trade.
- 15:41Speaker 1: I know, I know.
- 15:42Speaker 3: Noel V.
- 15:43Speaker 1: Marte has had an awful, awful year when he's been
- 15:46Speaker 1: up in the bigs.
- 15:48Speaker 3: Yeah, true. Tyler Stevenson? But he was in trade four
- 15:52Speaker 3: years draft.
- 15:53Speaker 1: No, Tyler Stevenson's been good at.
- 15:55Speaker 3: The plate this year. Yeah, he hasn't been bad.
- 15:58Speaker 1: We can get someone to look this up for us
- 15:59Speaker 1: at some point.
- 16:00Speaker 6: J.J.
- 16:00Speaker 3: Blue Bay.
- 16:01Speaker 6: McLean's one of them. McLean's one of them for sure.
- 16:04Speaker 6: I think probably Friedel might be one of them.
- 16:06Speaker 3: I don't know. I'm just guessing off the top of
- 16:09Speaker 3: my head here. Stewart?
- 16:12Speaker 5: Their outfield was historically bad. At one point, it was
- 16:15Speaker 5: the worst-hitting outfield in the history of the first half
- 16:17Speaker 5: of baseball.
- 16:18Speaker 6: See, this to me, though, is the manipulation of numbers, right?
- 16:21Speaker 6: Because usually if they're doing bad, like Noel V. Marte
- 16:23Speaker 6: was doing bad for 150th, They sent him a triple-A
- 16:26Speaker 6: because they're like, yeah, you ain't getting it done, dude.
- 16:27Speaker 3: You ain't here anymore. So you can manipulate that.
- 16:29Speaker 6: I can say, man, this team has the worst guys
- 16:32Speaker 6: with three or less plate appearances in the league.
- 16:35Speaker 3: Look at them go. Look how bad they are.
- 16:37Speaker 2: All right, updates from Orioles president of baseball operations, Mike Elias.
- 16:44Speaker 1: This was from the weekend. Craig Albernaz is back. That
- 16:47Speaker 1: makes sense.
- 16:48Speaker 2: Elias assumes that he'll be back, and then he wants
- 16:50Speaker 2: to add from the outside in the front office. Actually,
- 16:53Speaker 2: during the show, they added someone. Uh, I got to
- 16:56Speaker 2: look up who it exactly is. Someone more scoutish, which
- 16:59Speaker 2: makes sense to me. By the time you guys talk,
- 17:01Speaker 2: I can probably give you more info on it, but
- 17:03Speaker 2: also maybe more interesting than this. AJ, have you ever
- 17:06Speaker 2: kind of felt like you're losing your voice, but you're
- 17:08Speaker 2: able to talk it out and then get rid of it?
- 17:10Speaker 6: It's called having a frog in your throat. You got
- 17:12Speaker 6: to get the little frog. You got to have drip
- 17:14Speaker 6: it out.
- 17:14Speaker 3: You know, a little frog, a little frog in the throat. Scott,
- 17:17Speaker 3: it's okay.
- 17:17Speaker 1: Or you swallow the frog and eat it whole.
- 17:20Speaker 6: Those are things that I don't know about, Scott, so
- 17:22Speaker 6: I'm going to have to take your word for it.
- 17:23Speaker 6: I did see David Blaine. David Blaine once swallowed, vomited
- 17:27Speaker 6: up a live frog in person. So I don't know
- 17:30Speaker 6: how he did it, but we're way off topic here.
- 17:32Speaker 6: But anyways, David Blaine, I once saw him vomit a
- 17:35Speaker 6: frog into a glass. I don't know how he did it,
- 17:38Speaker 6: but it came out.
- 17:38Speaker 5: I don't know.
- 17:39Speaker 3: It's weird.
- 17:39Speaker 6: But the weirdest part about this, speaking of weird things,
- 17:42Speaker 6: Mike Elias saying, I don't know if I'm going to
- 17:43Speaker 6: be back. I don't know if I'm going to be back.
- 17:48Speaker 6: You have all these other answers, but you don't know
- 17:49Speaker 6: if you're going to be back.
- 17:50Speaker 3: Pretty sure you're going to be back, Mike.
- 17:51Speaker 1: Sorry.
- 17:54Speaker 3: Is that good?
- 17:55Speaker 5: I mean, maybe he's the po-bo. Maybe he gets a
- 17:58Speaker 5: GM in there that maybe can make more GM decisions. And,
- 18:03Speaker 5: you know, the Orioles can keep the structure that they
- 18:07Speaker 5: have if ownership feels like the structure's fine. But clearly,
- 18:11Speaker 5: I think it's time for somebody to be able to
- 18:14Speaker 5: infuse some outside influence. So hopefully this outside influence this
- 18:20Speaker 5: outside front office help gives them the opportunity to be like, okay,
- 18:24Speaker 5: now's the time to do this instead of continuing down
- 18:28Speaker 5: the road that you've continued down.
- 18:31Speaker 2: And it was a regional scout, Ty Haloub. He was
- 18:35Speaker 2: with the Mariners, going to be a senior analyst in
- 18:38Speaker 2: the scouting department. And apparently the dude that signed George Kirby,
- 18:43Speaker 2: among other big prospects for the Mariners that turned into
- 18:46Speaker 2: big leaguers.
- 18:48Speaker 1: So he'll help them. on that side of things.
- 18:51Speaker 5: Do you think the scout that signed somebody is really
- 18:54Speaker 5: the scout that found them?
- 18:55Speaker 3: Like, come on. I have such a hard time with that.
- 18:59Speaker 3: I have such a hard time with that.
- 19:02Speaker 1: Yes. They would never be discovered otherwise. Have you seen
- 19:04Speaker 1: the movies?
- 19:07Speaker 6: There are some of those guys, actually. There are some
- 19:09Speaker 6: guys like that, honestly. But they don't get the credit
- 19:12Speaker 6: for it.
- 19:13Speaker 3: True. I don't feel like those are the dudes that
- 19:15Speaker 3: find the guys. They're the grinders. They are down in
- 19:20Speaker 3: the bushes doing stuff.
- 19:21Speaker 1: George Kirby was found, okay? He was going to be
- 19:24Speaker 1: found regardless.
- 19:27Speaker 3: The guy for the Giants that hit last night, he
- 19:29Speaker 3: was found for real.
- 19:30Speaker 1: Right, right.
- 19:31Speaker 3: Agreed.
- 19:35Speaker 2: Okay, this is a huge story for Cubs fans and
- 19:38Speaker 2: the National League playoff race. Patrick Mooney joining us right now.
- 19:41Speaker 2: He covers the Cubs every day for The Athletic, and
- 19:43Speaker 2: you can listen to him on Northside Territory. Best in
- 19:46Speaker 2: the biz covering the Cubs here.
- 19:48Speaker 1: Love the show. Okay, Patrick.
- 19:50Speaker 2: I think this story is getting a drop overshadowed because
- 19:53Speaker 2: the Iron Judge news comes out pretty soon after it.
- 19:57Speaker 2: How much time could Alex Bregman miss, and how much
- 20:00Speaker 2: of an impact could that make on the Cubs' playoff chances? Obviously,
- 20:04Speaker 2: they're in the playoffs, but I'm saying their chances of
- 20:07Speaker 2: advancing as far as they want.
- 20:10Speaker 7: Scott, that's still to be determined.
- 20:13Speaker 4: I think the two main questions right now are, can
- 20:19Speaker 4: Bregman eventually play through these facial fractures? And then if
- 20:27Speaker 4: he does so, how much long-term risk would he be
- 20:31Speaker 4: taking on? As in, what if something else happened? How
- 20:36Speaker 4: much could that worsen his current condition.
- 20:40Speaker 7: And I think.
- 20:42Speaker 4: Bregman has also just been overshadowed by Pete Crow Armstrong.
- 20:46Speaker 4: If Pete wasn't having maybe the best individual season for
- 20:50Speaker 4: a franchise that started in 1876, I think we'd be
- 20:54Speaker 4: talking about Bregman a lot more. He's been one of
- 20:57Speaker 4: the best players in the game since the All-Star break.
- 21:00Speaker 4: And obviously, if he's out, that considerably lowers the team's
- 21:07Speaker 4: world series ceiling. They have good young infielders behind him
- 21:12Speaker 4: and Pedro Ramirez and Matt Shaw, but there's no way
- 21:15Speaker 4: you can just replace a two-time world series champion. You know,
- 21:21Speaker 4: someone who has close to an 800 career post-season OPS. Uh,
- 21:25Speaker 4: those guys just aren't, you know, out there in late September.
- 21:30Speaker 6: Patrick, uh, You know, people, you know, my wife asked me,
- 21:34Speaker 6: was he in the on-deck circle? Has he always stood
- 21:36Speaker 6: this close? Because, I mean, he was close. He was
- 21:39Speaker 6: almost directly behind the hitter. I mean, I've never seen
- 21:43Speaker 6: anybody stand that close. I've seen guys move, but usually
- 21:46Speaker 6: it's when the hitter is on their same side, never
- 21:48Speaker 6: with the opposite hitter, which leads to, because it's impossible
- 21:51Speaker 6: for a guy to hit a ball through them, right?
- 21:53Speaker 6: And this was a check swing foul ball that almost went,
- 21:56Speaker 6: was it Bush that was hitting? Who was hitting?
- 21:58Speaker 3: Yes, yes. That was Bush, right?
- 22:00Speaker 6: And he hit the foul ball that, I mean, kind
- 22:02Speaker 6: of went like diagonal off his shoulder that hit Bregman.
- 22:05Speaker 6: I mean, Bregman was like 20 feet, 30 feet from
- 22:08Speaker 6: home plate.
- 22:09Speaker 3: I mean, I've never seen a hitter. Is this where
- 22:11Speaker 3: Bregman usually stands?
- 22:13Speaker 4: Yeah, I was going to ask you guys that because
- 22:15Speaker 4: I can't remember seeing a major league hitter actually stand
- 22:19Speaker 4: on the on-deck circle. I mean, I guess I don't
- 22:22Speaker 4: look for it every single pitch, but it does feel
- 22:26Speaker 4: like guys drift and– This question came up during Craig
- 22:32Speaker 4: Council's Sunday postgame media.
- 22:35Speaker 7: Briefing, and he did not appreciate that question. He called
- 22:38Speaker 7: that terrible, sort.
- 22:40Speaker 4: Of implying that Bregman was at fault for this really
- 22:45Speaker 4: freak accident. I think Council is largely patient and empathetic
- 22:51Speaker 4: while kind of answering these questions, but it's not unreasonable,
- 22:56Speaker 4: I guess, to wonder, but I don't know, what are
- 22:58Speaker 4: the odds of something like this happening? As Council said,
- 23:01Speaker 4: where is he supposed to stand? We'll kind of hear
- 23:06Speaker 4: more today when we get out to Wrigley Field. But
- 23:12Speaker 4: I think part of the reason Council was short in
- 23:14Speaker 4: that answer is you could just tell how much the
- 23:18Speaker 4: Cubs felt this. You saw Michael Bush's reaction in the moment,
- 23:21Speaker 4: just dropping the bat and crouching to the ground. The
- 23:25Speaker 4: Cubs won a game. and moved even closer to clinching
- 23:29Speaker 4: a playoff spot. And they were not in a celebratory mood.
- 23:33Speaker 4: Like that locker room was, was very quiet.
- 23:35Speaker 3: All right.
- 23:36Speaker 5: Well, two things. No guys don't stand in the on
- 23:38Speaker 5: deck circle. All the, all the paraphernalia gets put in
- 23:41Speaker 5: the on deck circle. So I think you would find
- 23:44Speaker 5: less people standing in the on deck circle than it actually,
- 23:48Speaker 5: you know?
- 23:49Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 23:50Speaker 5: So that's, that's not going to happen. And the best
- 23:52Speaker 5: place to be would be behind the hitter, But for
- 23:56Speaker 5: some reason, we don't usually do that. So whatever it is,
- 23:59Speaker 5: just walk across the other side. All that to say,
- 24:01Speaker 5: his injury. Are the facial fractures the biggest concern? Because
- 24:07Speaker 5: the reason I ask, we had a guy this year
- 24:10Speaker 5: get hit. And they told us that, yes, it will
- 24:14Speaker 5: swell up. But the things they talk about are the
- 24:18Speaker 5: retina in the back because of the swelling having– slight detachment.
- 24:22Speaker 5: Is there any other issues that they're fearful of lingering?
- 24:25Speaker 5: Or as we see the swelling go down, will we
- 24:29Speaker 5: start to see Bregman possibly out on the field?
- 24:33Speaker 4: The preliminary indications are that Bregman's vision long-term should remain
- 24:41Speaker 4: in good shape. He traveled by car back from Cincinnati
- 24:50Speaker 4: to Chicago in rather than get on the team flight
- 24:55Speaker 4: Sunday night in his condition. So there are, there's obviously
- 25:00Speaker 4: a lot going on here. You know, as of yesterday's
- 25:04Speaker 4: off day, you know, the Cubs felt like it was
- 25:07Speaker 4: too soon to make any sort of snap judgments just
- 25:11Speaker 4: because the swelling was so bad, like that has to
- 25:14Speaker 4: go down first. Obviously, Eric, the long-term concerns you're wondering
- 25:20Speaker 4: about are valid. You know, I don't think those like
- 25:22Speaker 4: immediately go away, but the initial round of testing was
- 25:28Speaker 4: relatively positive, uh, in that regard.
- 25:31Speaker 7: And I think both sides are, we're still.
- 25:33Speaker 4: Kind of gathering opinions and trying to get a sense
- 25:37Speaker 4: of like, what is possible and what's simply not feasible
- 25:42Speaker 4: at this stage.
- 25:44Speaker 6: Patrick, um, will this lead to a rule change? like
- 25:47Speaker 6: the Buster Posey rule, the Chase Utley rule, where guys
- 25:50Speaker 6: got hurt, where they make it, you know, maybe they
- 25:53Speaker 6: put like a little thing where you stand on deck
- 25:55Speaker 6: and it has a cage around you and, you know,
- 25:57Speaker 6: now stepping out of the cage, Alex Bregman, right? And
- 26:01Speaker 6: the crowd gets to go crazy, right? Something like that.
- 26:03Speaker 6: Or will they try to keep it? Will they just
- 26:06Speaker 6: try to enforce guys being on the batting circle a
- 26:08Speaker 6: little bit more? Because we obviously had the famous incident
- 26:11Speaker 6: where Adrian Beltre pulled the the batter circle around. So,
- 26:16Speaker 6: I mean, will they make a rule change for that?
- 26:17Speaker 6: And also when you, after that, well, Alex Bregman, when
- 26:20Speaker 6: he does come back, will he get one of those
- 26:22Speaker 6: super cool things that John Carlos Stanton got that time,
- 26:25Speaker 6: you know, where he had the G, he could get
- 26:27Speaker 6: like an AB into it, you know, to, to protect
- 26:29Speaker 6: himself when he does come back.
- 26:31Speaker 3: Because I, I always also.
- 26:32Speaker 6: Think that they should make C flaps mandatory for every hitter,
- 26:35Speaker 6: but that we don't have enough time to go through
- 26:36Speaker 6: all that stuff.
- 26:38Speaker 4: I think both ideas will be worth presenting in, uh,
- 26:43Speaker 4: the labor talks, right? I mean, I don't, we'll see
- 26:46Speaker 4: how that's a whole nother, you know, not another show,
- 26:49Speaker 4: another series. But I think with Bregman, the thing you're
- 26:54Speaker 4: going to kind of be hearing about this week is
- 26:59Speaker 4: obviously he wants to play. Like this is someone who
- 27:02Speaker 4: is known as a baseball gym rat. He's going to
- 27:07Speaker 4: exhaust every possibility to see, what he can and cannot
- 27:12Speaker 4: do on a baseball field. We're one week out from
- 27:18Speaker 4: game one of a National League wildcard series. Cubs magic
- 27:22Speaker 4: number is one. Still have no idea where they're going
- 27:27Speaker 4: to play. Seeding is still... Up in the air, and
- 27:31Speaker 4: I don't know if you guys have checked the forecast
- 27:33Speaker 4: for Boston this weekend. It does not look good. So
- 27:40Speaker 4: for the Cubs, this is really unfortunate. This is the
- 27:44Speaker 4: second consecutive year something like this has happened. If you remember,
- 27:47Speaker 4: Cade Horton, an awesome young pitcher, went on the aisle
- 27:51Speaker 4: with a rib fracture right around the same time last year,
- 27:56Speaker 4: and he was– his season– ended at that point. They
- 28:01Speaker 4: hoped he could return for an NLCS. Obviously that didn't happen,
- 28:03Speaker 4: but one of their big young arms missing for the
- 28:07Speaker 4: first two rounds of the playoffs. And now they have
- 28:09Speaker 4: their guy who's, you know, there's the second best hitter
- 28:12Speaker 4: on their team, you know, behind a likely MVP, a
- 28:16Speaker 4: gold glove caliber defender at third base. And he's also,
- 28:19Speaker 4: as you guys know, one of the great connectors in
- 28:24Speaker 4: their clubhouse. You know, you guys saw those videos of
- 28:26Speaker 4: them at Churchill Downs on the Thursday off day.
- 28:30Speaker 7: Someone who's obsessed.
- 28:33Speaker 4: With the details of the game, who's brought a lot
- 28:35Speaker 4: to their game day preparation. And now they have to
- 28:39Speaker 4: consider the possibility of moving on without him.
- 28:43Speaker 5: And he's a winner in the biggest stage. I want
- 28:47Speaker 5: to talk about what you said about the weather. Because
- 28:50Speaker 5: people who don't know... What does it look like their
- 28:55Speaker 5: options would be? I know we're getting way ahead of
- 28:57Speaker 5: ourselves and I know the front could push it out
- 29:00Speaker 5: and push it farther out to sea. But what we're
- 29:02Speaker 5: looking at is essentially a hurricane spinning outside of Boston
- 29:07Speaker 5: for a three game series where. Major League Baseball got
- 29:10Speaker 5: rid of enough off days to get the rest of
- 29:14Speaker 5: the season in. If there is that case and the
- 29:17Speaker 5: Cubs have to go across the country to play the
- 29:20Speaker 5: Padres because the Padres get the number one wild card seed,
- 29:25Speaker 5: it's suboptimal, correct?
- 29:28Speaker 7: Yes, exactly.
- 29:29Speaker 3: That would be– A.J.
- 29:31Speaker 4: Would know this term. That would be a cubby occurrence.
- 29:34Speaker 4: That is what Lou Piniella sort of terms just the
- 29:39Speaker 4: weird things that happened around this franchise. Eric, you know
- 29:45Speaker 4: Craig Council very well. He would probably give you a look.
- 29:50Speaker 4: We'll deal with that when it comes. That has very
- 29:53Speaker 4: much been their MO this year and their in position
- 29:58Speaker 4: to clinch tonight with a win over the Marlins. And
- 30:01Speaker 4: it has really been from the start of the season
- 30:04Speaker 4: until this weekend here in late September of just one
- 30:08Speaker 4: thing after another.
- 30:11Speaker 7: We mentioned Cade Horton earlier. He got injured.
- 30:13Speaker 4: Justin Steele has not come back to this point. Their
- 30:20Speaker 4: entire preseason bullpen depth chart has been ripped up. They
- 30:26Speaker 4: overcame Dansby Swanson's oblique injury. And look, every team goes
- 30:29Speaker 4: through this, no doubt, but they've shown a lot of
- 30:33Speaker 4: resiliency to get to this point and they're going to
- 30:34Speaker 4: need a whole lot more if they want to survive
- 30:39Speaker 4: four playoff rounds after the Brewers ran away with this
- 30:42Speaker 4: division again.
- 30:43Speaker 3: Patrick, you know what you sound like?
- 30:46Speaker 6: What?
- 30:47Speaker 3: Typical Cub fan.
- 30:48Speaker 6: Boo-hoo, we had guys hurt and we had a black
- 30:51Speaker 6: cat run across our on-deck circle and we had a
- 30:55Speaker 6: squirrel in our in our beer snake out in the boo-hoo.
- 31:00Speaker 3: You sound like a typical Cub fan, Patrick. I'd expect
- 31:03Speaker 3: nothing else.
- 31:03Speaker 7: AJ, I don't care if the Cubs win or lose.
- 31:05Speaker 7: That's a lie, Patrick.
- 31:06Speaker 3: You just proved it. You just proved that was wrong.
- 31:12Speaker 7: Was there a question in there?
- 31:13Speaker 3: No, there was not. All right, okay.
- 31:15Speaker 7: It was just facts.
- 31:16Speaker 3: It was just me spitting facts.
- 31:20Speaker 7: I gave you that Cubby occurrence, and this is how
- 31:22Speaker 7: I'm repaid.
- 31:23Speaker 1: He just can't. He can't.
- 31:25Speaker 2: He kind of, like, dangled it in front of him,
- 31:27Speaker 2: and then he's got to grab it.
- 31:28Speaker 1: That's true.
- 31:29Speaker 3: That's true. He did. He did.
- 31:31Speaker 5: We got to go, but he's just mad. We established
- 31:34Speaker 5: earlier in the show that the south side is a
- 31:37Speaker 5: small market and the north side is a large market
- 31:41Speaker 5: because Ida Montevino said Chicago is a big market. There
- 31:44Speaker 5: was no pressure to play on the south side. There
- 31:47Speaker 5: is pressure to play on the north side. So he's
- 31:50Speaker 5: just mad. It's not you, Patrick. It's AJ, okay?
- 31:54Speaker 1: So it's two cities. Is that what you're telling me?
- 31:57Speaker 7: It's always AJ.
- 31:59Speaker 3: That's what Jerry said, not me. Jerry said that. Jerry.
- 32:05Speaker 1: North Chicago, South Chicago.
- 32:07Speaker 7: Got it.
- 32:08Speaker 4: John Greenberg had an excellent article in The Athletic today
- 32:10Speaker 4: about the north and.
- 32:11Speaker 7: South side of Chicago. Just check that one out. It's
- 32:14Speaker 7: worth your time.
- 32:15Speaker 3: Really?
- 32:16Speaker 1: Not only that, but we might have to get him on.
- 32:19Speaker 3: I thought John Greenberg just tweeted all the time. He does.
- 32:22Speaker 7: He does tweet a lot.
- 32:24Speaker 3: Yes.
- 32:25Speaker 2: Might get an invite out to John who's been on
- 32:27Speaker 2: North side territory. That's how we swing it all back. Patrick,
- 32:30Speaker 2: thanks for joining us, dude. And everyone check out North
- 32:32Speaker 2: side territory. Appreciate you, man.
- 32:33Speaker 1: Talk soon.
- 32:34Speaker 7: Thanks guys.
- 32:36Speaker 2: As a high Dave Sharma, Patrick Mooney and John Lester.
- 32:38Speaker 2: That's a trio North side territory QR code right side.
- 32:41Speaker 2: If you don't have it already podcast, YouTube, the whole deal,
- 32:44Speaker 2: go check it out. Hey, AJ, don't tell me I
- 32:49Speaker 2: never look at the comments. I actually look at them
- 32:51Speaker 2: way too often. YouTube mostly.
- 32:53Speaker 1: First of all.
- 32:54Speaker 3: Hold up, hold up.
- 32:55Speaker 6: Kratz, we didn't say that he doesn't. We said all
- 32:58Speaker 6: he does is look at the comments yesterday. He's in
- 33:00Speaker 6: the chat. He wasn't here, but he was in the chat.
- 33:02Speaker 6: So clearly Scott wasn't listening. He was in the chat
- 33:06Speaker 6: paying attention to the chat.
- 33:07Speaker 3: Hold up, hold up.
- 33:08Speaker 1: Of course, you know I was being sarcastic, right? I
- 33:10Speaker 1: live in the comments. I live in the chat.
- 33:12Speaker 3: I do.
- 33:13Speaker 1: I live and die in the comments. This was actually
- 33:15Speaker 1: a compliment for you. AJ. So there was two, right? Yesterday, Armand,
- 33:19Speaker 1: appreciate you.
- 33:19Speaker 2: He bought the psychopath shirt that we created for AJ
- 33:23Speaker 2: Ewing and Carson Benj on FoulTerritoryShop.com. More pressure on Ben
- 33:28Speaker 2: Arrozco Empoyo. There's my shirt, Junior Caminero shirt for Eric Kratz.
- 33:32Speaker 2: But the point of this was to also respond to,
- 33:36Speaker 2: there it is, nice Kratz, a comment yesterday from Paul
- 33:38Speaker 2: Kim in one of our YouTube videos. He just said, Hey, AJ,
- 33:42Speaker 2: we have the same exact birthday, same as the poker player,
- 33:45Speaker 2: Barry Greenstein, Sandy Koufax, Tiger, LeBron.
- 33:49Speaker 1: All of those are the same day. Is that true, AJ?
- 33:52Speaker 1: Or is he messing with us?
- 33:54Speaker 6: Let me tell you something about the great ones, Scott.
- 33:57Speaker 6: A lot of us were born, the second best people
- 34:00Speaker 6: at positions were born. The second best basketball player, LeBron.
- 34:04Speaker 6: The second best golfer, as far as majors goes, Tiger.
- 34:09Speaker 6: Second best Left-handed hitting catcher. I'm sure there's something I
- 34:15Speaker 6: can figure out why I'm second best at something. Sandy
- 34:18Speaker 6: Koufax is second best left-handed pitcher at something.
- 34:21Speaker 3: We're great at being the second best, but we're all
- 34:24Speaker 3: on the same day.
- 34:25Speaker 2: Big question, though, and great comment from Paul. He wants
- 34:28Speaker 2: to know, do you know what time you were born?
- 34:31Speaker 2: He wanted to know if he was technically born before you.
- 34:33Speaker 3: All right.
- 34:37Speaker 6: I think it was like one in the afternoon. The
- 34:39Speaker 6: only person I know, the only person who's, I actually
- 34:42Speaker 6: know the time is my daughter because she was born
- 34:45Speaker 6: on nine five, nine Oh five. And she was born
- 34:48Speaker 6: at nine Oh five PM. So I actually know that one.
- 34:50Speaker 6: Other than that, I think I was born at like
- 34:52Speaker 6: one in the afternoon. My mom told me, but AJ
- 34:56Speaker 6: didn't know how to read a clock at that age.
- 34:58Speaker 3: Sorry. Yeah. Sorry.
- 35:01Speaker 2: Paul, Paul in the comments that I really hope you
- 35:03Speaker 2: read comments. Probably don't. But were you born in the afternoon?
- 35:06Speaker 2: Just want to see who's technically older.
- 35:08Speaker 1: So there you go, Paul. You can make the decision,
- 35:10Speaker 1: make the call if you beat him to the punch.
- 35:13Speaker 1: I knew mine.
- 35:14Speaker 3: Paul sounds older.
- 35:15Speaker 1: Yeah, maybe by a few minutes. Right. More mature by
- 35:18Speaker 1: a few minutes, I would say.
- 35:20Speaker 3: You're a boomer, Scott. You're a boomer. Of course you
- 35:22Speaker 3: knew yours.
- 35:24Speaker 1: A boomer?
- 35:25Speaker 3: I don't think I am.
- 35:26Speaker 1: I think I'm a millennial.
- 35:28Speaker 3: 808. 808.
- 35:29Speaker 1: I was due 88.
- 35:30Speaker 3: That's how we know you're a boomer. You don't think
- 35:32Speaker 3: you're a boomer.
- 35:33Speaker 1: What the boomer?
- 35:49Speaker 2: Oh, we have a few minutes for slap hands, so
- 35:51Speaker 2: let's get through a lot here. First off, Dirt from
- 35:53Speaker 2: the Dugout, new episode running right after the show today
- 35:57Speaker 2: featuring Yankees manager Aaron Boone. Go check that out. Dirt
- 36:02Speaker 2: from the dugout on YouTube or wherever you get your podcasts.
- 36:04Speaker 2: Great show with Justin and Ravi. And we'll get some
- 36:08Speaker 2: word from Booney on life managing the Yankees for a
- 36:11Speaker 2: minute now.
- 36:12Speaker 1: It's been a while. Speaking of the Yanks.
- 36:14Speaker 3: Yes.
- 36:15Speaker 2: Oh, I saw that right on was great with the
- 36:18Speaker 2: explanation of Aaron Boone celebration. Both of you have it
- 36:21Speaker 2: down to a T speaking of that. So the raise
- 36:25Speaker 2: unveiled some road uniforms to celebrate the passion of raise
- 36:29Speaker 2: fans and also What is it, a modernized 1998 logo
- 36:34Speaker 2: with some Rays Navy on there?
- 36:36Speaker 1: AJ, this looked like it was– And to sell some
- 36:37Speaker 1: more unis.
- 36:37Speaker 3: Coming into the playoffs.
- 36:39Speaker 1: It's what?
- 36:40Speaker 5: And to sell some more unis to come into the
- 36:43Speaker 5: playoffs here too.
- 36:44Speaker 1: Nothing wrong with that.
- 36:45Speaker 3: Strike while the iron's hot.
- 36:47Speaker 1: They roll at some point. Yeah, so there it is.
- 36:49Speaker 1: What do we think? I like it.
- 36:51Speaker 3: I love them.
- 36:53Speaker 6: I'm a big Devil Ray fan, even though they're not
- 36:54Speaker 6: called the Devil Rays anymore. I'm a big Devil Rays fan.
- 36:58Speaker 1: It feels like more you.
- 36:59Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 37:00Speaker 5: The hat is cool. I know we don't have any
- 37:03Speaker 5: close-ups of the logo. It has the ray coming off
- 37:08Speaker 5: of the bottom of the B.
- 37:09Speaker 3: It's pretty. But that's why I remember Tampa Bay.
- 37:13Speaker 6: Here's the problem. They have an actual devil ray, and
- 37:15Speaker 6: they have rays in the park. They don't have any
- 37:17Speaker 6: sunshine in the park. That's why the rays never fit.
- 37:20Speaker 6: They should have just stuck with the devil rays. They
- 37:22Speaker 6: just should have called them the sting rays. Could have
- 37:24Speaker 6: called them the stinger. They got rid of the devil,
- 37:26Speaker 6: and the first year, they went right to the playoffs.
- 37:29Speaker 6: Went to the World Series.
- 37:30Speaker 1: World Series.
- 37:31Speaker 3: Yeah, true.
- 37:32Speaker 1: They didn't win, as AJ said.
- 37:34Speaker 6: They did the Rayway all the way until they got
- 37:37Speaker 6: to the World Series, and then the Phillies did the Rayway.
- 37:42Speaker 1: Yes.
- 37:43Speaker 3: True. Oh, wait. Look it up, kids.
- 37:47Speaker 1: Hey, here's some history.
- 37:48Speaker 2: River Ryan and DJ Herz had not pitched since 2024.
- 37:53Speaker 2: Both of them pitching, coming back in the same game
- 37:55Speaker 2: yesterday with the Tigers and the Nationals, a game that
- 37:57Speaker 2: doesn't mean anything, obviously, for The season and playoff implications
- 38:01Speaker 2: and all that, but meant a lot.
- 38:02Speaker 1: To these two.
- 38:03Speaker 2: 28-year-old River Ryan, who was a big part of the
- 38:05Speaker 2: Tarek Skubal deal.
- 38:06Speaker 1: They let him go three innings. He looked sharp.
- 38:09Speaker 2: And then DJ Herr is also returning for the first
- 38:12Speaker 2: time in a couple years. So welcome back to those two.
- 38:15Speaker 2: Always crazy when it's been years like that, guys.
- 38:17Speaker 6: I know they were working their way back. I'm not
- 38:21Speaker 6: saying someone said that, but.
- 38:23Speaker 3: I think it was Kratz. That he was going to
- 38:26Speaker 3: give up a bunch of runs?
- 38:27Speaker 6: Yes, you said on your lock when we did locks.
- 38:29Speaker 6: I said, oh, it's over eight and a half. I'm
- 38:31Speaker 6: taking the Tigers at Nationals. And you go, oh, River
- 38:33Speaker 6: Ryan's pitching. He ain't pitched in a while. He's probably
- 38:35Speaker 6: going to give up some runs.
- 38:38Speaker 3: I remember saying River Ryan. I thought the bullpen was
- 38:41Speaker 3: going to give it up. Little did I know. Little
- 38:45Speaker 3: did you know the starters did it all.
- 38:47Speaker 1: What was it, 9-2, right? Easy hit.
- 38:50Speaker 3: Yeah, but it was 9-0 in like the third inning
- 38:52Speaker 3: for the Tigers. So, I mean, that was an easy one.
- 38:54Speaker 1: Good job, Kratz. And here's a little nugget on another
- 38:58Speaker 1: team that stinks. What are you laughing at?
- 39:02Speaker 5: It's like making a pull shot just in the wrong pocket.
- 39:06Speaker 3: Slop. You made slop. You got slop.
- 39:08Speaker 1: It lands. So if it lands in the pocket, it
- 39:11Speaker 1: lands in the pocket.
- 39:12Speaker 3: Okay.
- 39:12Speaker 1: Sometimes you need that.
- 39:13Speaker 2: You go, see, that's what I meant. That's why I
- 39:15Speaker 2: analyzed the game that way. So did you see this
- 39:18Speaker 2: note on the Giants approaching some history here? So this
- 39:22Speaker 2: was yesterday from Alex Pavlovich, who covers the team for NBC.
- 39:25Speaker 2: With Bo Davidson and Marcelo Meyer getting out there tonight,
- 39:28Speaker 2: the Giants become the.
- 39:28Speaker 1: Fourth team in history to use the word Giants.
- 39:30Speaker 2: At least 70 players in one season. They're one away
- 39:34Speaker 2: from tying the 2025 Braves for that record.
- 39:38Speaker 6: Well, as good as River Ryan did yesterday in his
- 39:43Speaker 6: Detroit debut, Marcelo Meyer doesn't want to remember his Giants
- 39:47Speaker 6: debut yesterday. Mm-mm.
- 39:50Speaker 3: There's a good river, Ryan.
- 39:52Speaker 1: Bo Davidson looks, I mean, that's a good story, right?
- 39:55Speaker 6: That's a great story. And, dude, I like his swing.
- 39:57Speaker 6: His first at bat was a pimp at bat, dude.
- 40:00Speaker 6: Just fouling balls on him and got a knock. And
- 40:02Speaker 6: his brother in the stands was like, yeah.
- 40:04Speaker 3: Boy, he's here. He's here.
- 40:05Speaker 1: The man is here. Yeah.
- 40:06Speaker 3: It was like a wrestling promo. It was awesome.
- 40:09Speaker 1: That was cool. Yeah. There's a Marcel Meyer story that's, yeah,
- 40:13Speaker 1: 70s a lot.
- 40:15Speaker 5: And the Marcel, sorry to cut you off, that Marcel
- 40:17Speaker 5: Meyer story is really good. I hope we can chat
- 40:21Speaker 5: about it because I saw some comments from some Boston
- 40:24Speaker 5: writers about it, and it was just like, interesting read.
- 40:28Speaker 2: Yeah, he was not happy at times there, and we'll
- 40:30Speaker 2: talk about it maybe tomorrow.
- 40:32Speaker 1: We're staying on YouTube, so stick around for a few.
- 40:36Speaker 3: Or his dad. Or his dad wasn't that happy.
- 40:39Speaker 1: Enrique. Enrique. We're here. By the way, on Thursday, we
- 40:45Speaker 1: have Martin Perez.
- 40:45Speaker 3: I'm interested to know. You have my attention.
- 40:47Speaker 1: No, we're not doing it yet, though. You've got to
- 40:49Speaker 1: read the story.
- 40:51Speaker 3: I know.
- 40:51Speaker 6: I just read enough of it and what you guys
- 40:53Speaker 6: just said. We'll get into it. Hopefully tomorrow, because if
- 40:56Speaker 6: you just said what I think you said, your dad's mad?
- 41:00Speaker 6: What is this? The Fortmite and Mennonites, whatever they're called.
- 41:05Speaker 3: What is it called? The Doc Mennonites? The horse and buggies.
- 41:08Speaker 6: Yeah, the Doc Mennonite horse and buggies? Like, What are
- 41:10Speaker 6: we talking about? Like the dad can complete.
- 41:12Speaker 3: All right. Anyways, I don't want to get into it.
- 41:14Speaker 2: Cause I don't want, I want you to get into it.
- 41:15Speaker 2: I just want to have like 10 minutes for it.
- 41:18Speaker 2: That's my only request and I want to get into it.
- 41:20Speaker 2: So tomorrow, boom, book it. We're doing it. We have
- 41:23Speaker 2: the article ready to go. It came out right around,
- 41:25Speaker 2: or at least we saw it right around when the
- 41:27Speaker 2: show started. So that's sometimes why we save things. But
- 41:30Speaker 2: while we have two minutes to spare here, Ken Rosenthal
- 41:32Speaker 2: joining us tomorrow, Martine Perez from the Braves. She had
- 41:34Speaker 2: a really solid year for Atlanta is going to join us.
- 41:37Speaker 2: on thursday and then baseball america's hot sheet is coming
- 41:40Speaker 2: up next on the ba youtube channel can we show
- 41:42Speaker 2: the minor league players of the year graphic and well
- 41:46Speaker 2: first off the qr code to go over to their
- 41:48Speaker 2: page or you just type in baseball america in the
- 41:51Speaker 2: youtube channel or podcast platforms and then they announce their
- 41:54Speaker 2: minor league players of the year per team so many
- 41:58Speaker 2: names that you're well aware of on here guys jose
- 42:01Speaker 2: the paula kate anderson for the mariners ethan salas for
- 42:06Speaker 2: The Padres, Franklin Arias, who was supposed to be really
- 42:08Speaker 2: good for the Red Sox.
- 42:09Speaker 1: He had a great year. Could be a big part
- 42:11Speaker 1: of the future there. George Lombard Jr. for the Yankees.
- 42:14Speaker 1: Good story for Zach Veen, who was a big deal
- 42:17Speaker 1: years back and was able to kind of figure it
- 42:18Speaker 1: out and get himself, I think, what, lost a lot
- 42:21Speaker 1: of weight and got himself back on track. Eli Willits,
- 42:24Speaker 1: former first overall pick. Anyone else on there that you
- 42:27Speaker 1: guys want to shout out?
- 42:29Speaker 3: Wasn't Veen the guy who did the huge bat flip
- 42:31Speaker 3: in spring training? Then the next spring training.
- 42:35Speaker 5: He put on like 40 or 45 pounds, and then
- 42:38Speaker 5: he lost the weight again. Obviously, it's all stuff that
- 42:42Speaker 5: was so cool they did that, but Andrew Fisher is
- 42:45Speaker 5: the one on that list that J.J. Cooper is probably
- 42:48Speaker 5: going to talk about. Still not a top-end prospect. Look
- 42:52Speaker 5: at his numbers. I don't care what you think about
- 42:54Speaker 5: the minor leagues.
- 42:54Speaker 3: I don't care.
- 42:55Speaker 5: He didn't play in El Paso, and he didn't play
- 42:58Speaker 5: in Reno.
- 42:59Speaker 3: You need to look at his numbers. They are redonkulous.
- 43:05Speaker 1: And he's still doing it in the postseason. I don't
- 43:07Speaker 1: know where they're at.
- 43:07Speaker 2: I checked like two days ago and he was hitting
- 43:09Speaker 2: dingers in the postseason. I mean, he's just, he's a monster.
- 43:11Speaker 3: Three already in the postseason.
- 43:13Speaker 6: Mm-hmm.
- 43:14Speaker 1: Kratzat's on the way out.
- 43:17Speaker 5: Speaking of, the Milwaukee A's have a chance to win
- 43:20Speaker 5: 100 games for the first time in their franchise ever.
- 43:25Speaker 5: They already broke the record, but if they get to 100,
- 43:28Speaker 5: that would be sick.
- 43:29Speaker 7: Mm-hmm.
- 43:30Speaker 1: And controlling home field.
- 43:33Speaker 6: Murph would still tell you they suck if they get
- 43:34Speaker 6: to 100. He'd be like, ah, we're just very good.
- 43:37Speaker 1: AJ, you know what he's going to say? Nobody knows us.
- 43:41Speaker 6: Nobody knows about us. Yeah, we don't even know ourselves.
- 43:45Speaker 6: It'd be like Zoolander. We don't even know ourselves. Nobody
- 43:48Speaker 6: makes me bleed my own blood. That wasn't Zoolander.
- 43:53Speaker 3: That was Dodgeball. Dodgeball, sorry. Same character.
- 44:00Speaker 1: Another classic.
