- 0:05Welcome to The Daily Quote, a podcast designed to kick start
- 0:08your day in a positive way. I'm your host Anna McGivern for
- 0:12September 4th. Today is National Eat a Second
- 0:16Dessert Day, wonderfully indulgent holiday that gives us
- 0:19permission to throw caution to the wind and enjoy life's
- 0:23sweeter moments. In a world that's often focused
- 0:27on restraint, discipline, and everything in moderation, this
- 0:31delightful day reminds us that sometimes it's perfectly OK to
- 0:36have that second slice of cake, the extra scoop of ice cream, or
- 0:42both the chocolate chip cookie and the brownie.
- 0:47There's something beautifully rebellious about this holiday.
- 0:51It celebrates not just dessert, but the idea that life is meant
- 0:54to be savored. After all, how many times have
- 0:57we sat in a restaurant, finished our meal, and found ourselves
- 1:00torn between the sensible choice, which is not having
- 1:05dessert, and the delicious 1? Today gives us permission to
- 1:10choose delicious twice. And that brings us to today's
- 1:15quote from Oscar Wilde, the Irish playwright and poet known
- 1:20for his wit and love of life's pleasures.
- 1:23He once said I can resist everything except temptation.
- 1:30Oscar Wilde understood something that national the second dessert
- 1:34day celebrates perfectly. Sometimes the most honest thing
- 1:38we can do is acknowledge our desires instead of pretending we
- 1:41don't have them. Wilde's quote isn't about being
- 1:44weak willed, it's about being human.
- 1:49Think about it, when we deny ourselves small pleasures
- 1:52completely, we often end up more obsessed with them than if we
- 1:56had just enjoyed them mindfully in the 1st place.
- 1:59There's wisdom and Wilds playful admission that temptation is,
- 2:04well, tempting, and sometimes the healthiest response is in
- 2:09rigid resistance but conscious indulgence.
- 2:13This doesn't mean throwing all self-care out the window, but
- 2:16rather recognizing that life's sweetness, literally and
- 2:20figuratively, is meant to be enjoyed.
- 2:23When we constantly deny ourselves simple pleasures, we
- 2:27risk becoming so focused on what we can't have that we forget to
- 2:32appreciate what we can. That's the wisdom both Wild and
- 2:36this holiday offer us. Sometimes the most reasonable
- 2:40thing to do is to be a little unreasonable.
- 2:44So today, as we celebrate National Eat a Second Dessert
- 2:47Day, let's embrace Oscar Wilde's honest acknowledgement of human
- 2:51nature. Life is full of genuine
- 2:54temptations that bring us joy. An extra cookie.
- 2:58A longer conversation with a friend, One more chapter of a
- 3:03good book. I'm looking at you, Maiva.
- 3:09Maybe today's the day to stop resisting every small pleasure
- 3:13and instead choose to savor them.
- 3:16After all, as wild new a life without any temptation might be
- 3:21virtuous, but it's probably not nearly as sweet.
- 3:26That's going to do it for today. I'm Anna McGivern, signing off
- 3:30for now, but I'll be back tomorrow.
- 3:35Same pod time, same pod station with another daily quote.
