Latest / OneLegUpAlex Media / After WCBS 880 Closed Down, My Commitment to Have One Leg Up on News, Sports and Adaptability; Why Tulsi Endorsed Trump 8-27-24
Transcript
- 0:02Speaker 1: Here's your host, Alex derret.
- 0:12Speaker 2: Well, something very interesting happened on my TikTok. I realized
- 0:17Speaker 2: people still love radio only when one of the most
- 0:23Speaker 2: beloved stations closed down. Did you hear this?
- 0:32Speaker 1: I'm Wayne Cavin do before the final time, this is
- 0:38Speaker 1: WCBS New York.
- 0:43Speaker 2: And then there was some silence and some utter shock
- 0:47Speaker 2: and stun that ran through my body that after weeks
- 0:51Speaker 2: of this conversation happening, where WCBS a eighty would go
- 0:54Speaker 2: off the air, it happened. And of course you couldn't
- 0:59Speaker 2: pick a better guy, Wayne Cabin to turn off the lights,
- 1:03Speaker 2: if you will. But what was sad. It was shocking
- 1:06Speaker 2: because a lot of us grew up in the radio
- 1:10Speaker 2: listening to that station, right, I mean a lot of
- 1:12Speaker 2: us were listening to it. But what transpired after that
- 1:18Speaker 2: was the fact that this video I put up garnered
- 1:23Speaker 2: over thirty nine thousand views, thirty nine thousand views, and
- 1:29Speaker 2: so many people saying this is how I found out
- 1:32Speaker 2: WCBS eight eighty was going goodbye. No one said anything, Folks,
- 1:39Speaker 2: if you're going to be mourning the loss of a
- 1:42Speaker 2: radio station, clearly you still love radio. So my point is,
- 1:49Speaker 2: don't let the critics out there tell us radio is dying.
- 1:55Speaker 2: Listen to the radio more. If you care so much
- 1:58Speaker 2: at WCBS eight eight he is gone, then prevent the
- 2:01Speaker 2: downfall of other radio stations. You know how you do that?
- 2:05Speaker 2: Pick up your transition radio, even listen online or whatever
- 2:09Speaker 2: radio you can get and listen to radio. Ratings matter,
- 2:15Speaker 2: Metrics still matter in radio, and as a lifelong New Yorker,
- 2:21Speaker 2: I felt now this absurd responsibility to include one leg
- 2:30Speaker 2: up on news as part of my repertoire here on
- 2:33Speaker 2: the podcast, because quite frankly, it seems like only people
- 2:41Speaker 2: know things are happening through the digital space. So if
- 2:46Speaker 2: I have to fell avoid of news that people are
- 2:48Speaker 2: gonna all of a sudden miss, then I'll do that.
- 2:52Speaker 2: Obviously right now at ADI Sports, they're on ESPN, this, that,
- 2:59Speaker 2: and the other. But as a lifelong New Yorker who's
- 3:03Speaker 2: met every mayor of my lifetime Dinkin's, Adam's, Giuliani, Deblasio, Bloomberg,
- 3:13Speaker 2: I feel like I'm on the scene and I want
- 3:16Speaker 2: to fill that news void for you. So if you're
- 3:19Speaker 2: listening on this odyssey app and looking for a new
- 3:22Speaker 2: home for something that has one leg up, on news, sports, adaptability,
- 3:28Speaker 2: how even accountability. I'm there. I'm right there, one leg
- 3:38Speaker 2: up with Alex grrett Is on Odyssey, and I am
- 3:42Speaker 2: thankful for that. I'm saying that people will have to
- 3:45Speaker 2: lose their jobs, but I'm praying that those radio talent,
- 3:49Speaker 2: radio behind the scenes folks who put the news on
- 3:53Speaker 2: every day find their path very soon after this horrible closure.
- 4:00Speaker 2: Over to the CBSA eighty, I digress to be one
- 4:08Speaker 2: leg up on news, you have to talk about it.
- 4:10Speaker 2: And maybe I'll get Crane's business to sponsor maybe a
- 4:15Speaker 2: minute segment every day, because New York City has news.
- 4:19Speaker 2: They are the best at giving us the news I
- 4:22Speaker 2: feel like. And then, of course, the landscape, the political
- 4:27Speaker 2: landscape that is twenty twenty four. We haven't talked about
- 4:32Speaker 2: it much, but President Trump keeps getting endorsements and the
- 4:37Speaker 2: latest isn't really a surprise. In fact, I wish this
- 4:41Speaker 2: person that endorsed President Trump over the week, over the
- 4:45Speaker 2: week and yesterday really was his VP pick. If I'm
- 4:50Speaker 2: quite honest with you, that would have been something else.
- 4:54Speaker 2: But I know Trump will accept her endorsement and take
- 4:57Speaker 2: a listen to who endorse Donald Trump.
- 5:00Speaker 1: Now, she's a special person.
- 5:01Speaker 2: She's got great common sense, great spirits.
- 5:03Speaker 3: She loves her, she loves the people in this room.
- 5:06Speaker 1: Tulsi Gabbard Tausi Place.
- 5:26Speaker 2: Thank you for a good time.
- 5:27Speaker 4: Thank you, Thank you, mister President Aloha.
- 5:33Speaker 3: I know we got Hawaii in the house. Here there
- 5:36Speaker 3: we go.
- 5:38Speaker 4: It is a privilege to be here with all of you,
- 5:40Speaker 4: my brothers and sisters in uniform, especially.
- 5:43Speaker 3: On this day of all days.
- 5:46Speaker 4: I had the privilege of joining President Trump this morning
- 5:50Speaker 4: at Arlington Cemetery where he joined two gold Star families
- 5:58Speaker 4: and loved ones of Apps, Sergeant Hoover and Sergeant g
- 6:03Speaker 4: both of whom were two of the thirteen killed in
- 6:05Speaker 4: the Abbey Gate attack three years ago today in Kabble,
- 6:12Speaker 4: And I can tell you as we were there, as
- 6:14Speaker 4: he laid a wreath at the tomb of the unknown soldier,
- 6:18Speaker 4: joining these Marines loved ones, I felt the sorrow that he.
- 6:24Speaker 3: Shared with them in their loss. I felt and.
- 6:28Speaker 4: Saw his sincere appreciation for these servicemen and women who
- 6:35Speaker 4: paid the ultimate price and their loved ones who continue
- 6:40Speaker 4: to grieve to this day.
- 6:44Speaker 3: This is personal for me, as I know it is
- 6:46Speaker 3: for so many of you here. This is real, It's
- 6:50Speaker 3: not just words.
- 6:52Speaker 4: I first deployed to Iraq in two thousand and five
- 6:54Speaker 4: with the Hawaii Army National Guard as a member of
- 6:58Speaker 4: Charlie med As those of you who were deployed during
- 7:10Speaker 4: that time know, it was the height of the war,
- 7:12Speaker 4: and sadly, we took many casualties, and every day we
- 7:16Speaker 4: were confronted with that high human cost of war and
- 7:21Speaker 4: that sadness as we boarded the plane when we left,
- 7:23Speaker 4: that we were leaving some of our brothers and sisters behind,
- 7:28Speaker 4: only to lose others when we.
- 7:31Speaker 3: Got home to suicide.
- 7:34Speaker 4: So I mean what I say when I share with
- 7:37Speaker 4: you that I know that President Trump understands the grave
- 7:40Speaker 4: responsibility that a president commander in chief bears for every
- 7:45Speaker 4: single one of our lives, whether you're a soldier or
- 7:48Speaker 4: an airman, a marine sailor, or a coast He keeps
- 7:52Speaker 4: us in his heart in the decisions that he makes.
- 7:56Speaker 4: We saw this through his first term in the presidency.
- 8:00Speaker 4: It only didn't start.
- 8:01Speaker 3: Any new wars.
- 8:02Speaker 4: He took action to de escalate and prevent wars. He
- 8:07Speaker 4: exercised the courage that we expect from our commander in
- 8:10Speaker 4: chief in exhausting all measures of diplomacy having the courage
- 8:15Speaker 4: to meet with adversaries, dictators, allies and partners alike in
- 8:21Speaker 4: the pursuit of peace, seeing war as a last resort.
- 8:27Speaker 3: The truth is, as we.
- 8:28Speaker 4: Head towards our decision as a country in November, the
- 8:32Speaker 4: same cannot be said about Kamala Harris. In fact, the
- 8:37Speaker 4: opposite is true, and we're living through this reality today
- 8:40Speaker 4: as this administration has us facing multiple wars on multiple
- 8:45Speaker 4: fronts and regions around the world, and closer to the
- 8:49Speaker 4: brink of nuclear war than we ever have been before.
- 8:54Speaker 4: This is one of the main reasons why I'm committed
- 8:56Speaker 4: to doing all that I can to send President Trump
- 8:59Speaker 4: back to the White House where he can once again
- 9:01Speaker 4: serve us as our commander in chief.
- 9:13Speaker 2: If Tulsi Garbertt was to somehow endorse Kamala, I would
- 9:16Speaker 2: have played her endorsement. Kamala. You know why, because she's
- 9:19Speaker 2: a very smart woman. Tulsi Gabbart is one of the
- 9:22Speaker 2: smartest Democrats, and she was a Democrat for over twenty
- 9:26Speaker 2: years out there, and that's why she left the party.
- 9:30Speaker 2: Because she's smarter than all of them. And if people
- 9:34Speaker 2: are confused or wondering why and how could Tulsi do this.
- 9:40Speaker 2: I want to take you back to something I played,
- 9:42Speaker 2: I thought I played on this podcast in twenty twenty.
- 9:47Speaker 2: Remember the takedown, the absolute takedown of the Democrat debates.
- 9:53Speaker 2: And she was really exiled after this. But she did
- 9:57Speaker 2: an incredible job against Samala Harris on a Democratic debate
- 10:04Speaker 2: stage in twenty twenty, and I swear I played this
- 10:07Speaker 2: for you. Do you remember? Do you remember this moment?
- 10:10Speaker 4: Miss back to the broken criminal justice system that is
- 10:13Speaker 4: disproportionately negatively impacting black and brown people all across this
- 10:18Speaker 4: country to day. Senator Harris says she's proud of her
- 10:21Speaker 4: record as a prosecutor and that she'll be a prosecutor president.
- 10:24Speaker 4: But I'm deeply concerned about this record. There are too
- 10:27Speaker 4: many examples to cite. But she put over fifteen hundred
- 10:30Speaker 4: people in jail for marijuana violations and then laughed about
- 10:33Speaker 4: it when she was asked if she ever smoked marijuana.
- 10:36Speaker 5: She blocked evidence.
- 10:39Speaker 4: She blocked evidence that would have freed an innocent man
- 10:42Speaker 4: from death row until the courts forced her to do so.
- 10:46Speaker 4: She kept people in prison beyond their sentences to use
- 10:49Speaker 4: them as cheap labor for the state of California.
- 10:51Speaker 3: And she fought to keep.
- 10:54Speaker 4: Fail system in place that impacts poor people in the
- 10:57Speaker 4: worst kind of way. Thank you, Congresswoman Harris your response.
- 11:05Speaker 5: As the elected Attorney General of California, I did the
- 11:08Speaker 5: work of significantly reforming the criminal justice system of a
- 11:13Speaker 5: state of forty million people, which became a national model
- 11:16Speaker 5: for the work that needs to be done. And I
- 11:18Speaker 5: am proud of that work. And I am proud of
- 11:20Speaker 5: making a decision to not just give fancy speeches or
- 11:24Speaker 5: be in a legislative body and give speeches on a floor,
- 11:26Speaker 5: but actually doing the work of being in the position
- 11:30Speaker 5: to use the power that I had to reform a
- 11:32Speaker 5: system that is badly in need of reform. That is
- 11:34Speaker 5: why we created initiatives that were about re entering former
- 11:38Speaker 5: offenders and getting them counsel.
- 11:39Speaker 4: Like the bottom line is, Senator Harris, when you were
- 11:41Speaker 4: in a position to make a difference and an impact
- 11:44Speaker 4: in these people's lives, you did not. And worse yet,
- 11:47Speaker 4: in the case of those who were on death row,
- 11:50Speaker 4: innocent people, you actually blocked evidence from being revealed that
- 11:54Speaker 4: would have freed them.
- 11:56Speaker 3: Until you were forced to do so.
- 11:57Speaker 4: There is no excuse for that, and the people who
- 12:00Speaker 4: suffered under your reign as prosecutor. You owe them an apology.
- 12:07Speaker 4: Our Democratic Party, unfortunately, is not the party that is of,
- 12:11Speaker 4: by and for the people. It is a party that
- 12:15Speaker 4: has been and continues to be influenced by the foreign
- 12:19Speaker 4: policy establishment in Washington, represented by Hillary Clinton and others,
- 12:23Speaker 4: foreign policy by the military industrial complex and other greedy
- 12:28Speaker 4: corporate interests. Senator Harris Any response.
- 12:32Speaker 5: Oh sure, I think that it's unfortunate that we have
- 12:40Speaker 5: someone on the stage who is attempting to be the
- 12:43Speaker 5: Democratic nominee for President of the United States who, during
- 12:46Speaker 5: the Obama administration spent four years full time on Fox
- 12:50Speaker 5: News criticizing President Obama. That's who has spent full time.
- 12:54Speaker 5: That's what has spent full time criticizing people on this
- 12:58Speaker 5: stage as aid with the Democratic Party. When done not
- 13:04Speaker 5: even sworn In budied up to Steve Bannon to get
- 13:08Speaker 5: a meeting with Donald Trump in the Trump Tower, fails
- 13:13Speaker 5: to call a war criminal by what he is as
- 13:16Speaker 5: a war criminal, and then spends full time during the
- 13:18Speaker 5: course of this campaign again criticizing the Democratic Party.
- 13:22Speaker 2: Well, this is the problem with today's Democrats. They can't
- 13:28Speaker 2: have that outside democratic voice saying you know, you guys
- 13:32Speaker 2: are screwing it all up. No, no, you gotta be lockstep.
- 13:36Speaker 2: And you know it's crazy, as crazy as the summer
- 13:38Speaker 2: has been with them. And I predicted that they would
- 13:42Speaker 2: use the twenty bith Amendment. Well, alex I didn't actually
- 13:45Speaker 2: use it. They threaten to use against Biden, and that's
- 13:47Speaker 2: when Biden stepped away. They were going to go and
- 13:51Speaker 2: use the twenty fith Amendment. So as much as she's
- 13:54Speaker 2: trying to say, even in twenty twenty, you know you
- 13:56Speaker 2: can't criticize the Democrats. Again't criticize Obama. There was a
- 14:02Speaker 2: lot of criticism this year a President Biden, and of
- 14:07Speaker 2: course the answer was let's push him out now. I
- 14:11Speaker 2: don't know if the these debates with Tulsi and Kamala
- 14:16Speaker 2: Harris VP Harris ruined Harris's chance in Iowa because she
- 14:21Speaker 2: didn't score anything really in Iowa in twenty twenty. But see,
- 14:27Speaker 2: Tulsi is just her independent self and they don't like
- 14:32Speaker 2: that in the Democratic Party. That's why she left it,
- 14:35Speaker 2: and that's why the party itself needs to change. You
- 14:41Speaker 2: need to be able to have those outside voices saying, hey,
- 14:44Speaker 2: you know what, we gotta support Israel. You need to
- 14:46Speaker 2: have those outside voices that aren't the squad or even
- 14:51Speaker 2: in the White House. You have to have people allowed
- 14:54Speaker 2: to criticize your own party for a party to be successful.
- 14:58Speaker 2: Help did anybody exile and the Republicans, I guess you
- 15:03Speaker 2: could say, uh, Paul Ryan was basically a dead lame
- 15:08Speaker 2: duck speaker after he wouldn't really go along with Trump's
- 15:14Speaker 2: ideas and everything like that. But really and of course
- 15:17Speaker 2: last year with McCarthy, yeah, they exiled him too for
- 15:21Speaker 2: no reason why because he was being trying to, you know,
- 15:24Speaker 2: team up with the Democrats to get something done. That's
- 15:27Speaker 2: why you ex out Speaker McCarthy. But on the Democratic
- 15:31Speaker 2: side also, it seems like they can't always handle criticism.
- 15:37Speaker 2: And you need to have in both parties someone in
- 15:40Speaker 2: there who's gonna try and speak sense and common sense,
- 15:45Speaker 2: or you will not have you will not have a
- 15:49Speaker 2: structural party that that's gonna be worth voting for anyway.
- 15:55Speaker 2: So this is why I totally Gabbard endorsing Trump's not
- 15:59Speaker 2: a surprise. And and and I'm just getting breaking news
- 16:11Speaker 2: that my friend, my radio colleague and happen to be
- 16:14Speaker 2: the owner of WABC, John Katz Matiez told Barrett Media.
- 16:19Speaker 2: He had to deal with Odyssey to buy eight eighty,
- 16:21Speaker 2: which fell through. Man, if eight to eighty let that happen,
- 16:25Speaker 2: that would have been something else so interesting. John Katz
- 16:29Speaker 2: is opening up about that, and I just want to
- 16:31Speaker 2: give you that low breaking news as well, because seems
- 16:34Speaker 2: like on this podcast people didn't even know wcb has
- 16:37Speaker 2: a closed down. People don't even know Tolsely, Gavin and Dorstrump.
- 16:42Speaker 2: That's why I told my friend Lolu Tarmanella was on
- 16:44Speaker 2: the show all the time. I said to him, no
- 16:48Speaker 2: matter how many breaking news stories we may not get
- 16:51Speaker 2: to in a day, just talk about and report him
- 16:54Speaker 2: because someone out there may not even know that it's
- 16:57Speaker 2: going on. You may not even know before listen to
- 17:00Speaker 2: this Tulsi Gabbert endorsed Trump. You may not even know
- 17:03Speaker 2: w CBS went under and it's no longer on the air.
- 17:07Speaker 2: So I'm gonna try and have that one like up
- 17:10Speaker 2: on news, sports, adaptability and whatever else, even culture here
- 17:16Speaker 2: and there, whatever else lands on my desk. As I said,
- 17:21Speaker 2: my podcast desk feels like gets fulled as things passing
- 17:25Speaker 2: through it all the time that I may not get to,
- 17:27Speaker 2: but I will because it matters Yes, A eighty mattered,
- 17:32Speaker 2: Peter Haskell. These moments matter. This endorsement of Trump by
- 17:37Speaker 2: Toulci Gabbert matters because she is truly separating herself from
- 17:43Speaker 2: the Democrats. By doing this, She's truly showing she has
- 17:45Speaker 2: her own mind. And I do I do wish she
- 17:49Speaker 2: was somehow involved in the administration or dare I say
- 17:53Speaker 2: Trump's VP that would have been a ticket. That would
- 17:56Speaker 2: have been a ticket right there. But I know President
- 17:58Speaker 2: Trump will probably set up endorsement now. To be fair,
- 18:02Speaker 2: I didn't even cover the DNC, and the DNC take
- 18:05Speaker 2: of it was there was a lot of show. There
- 18:08Speaker 2: was a lot of high energy, a lot more high
- 18:09Speaker 2: energy than the RNC, if I'm honest. But was their
- 18:15Speaker 2: substance in Kamala Harrier and VP Harris's acceptance speech. She
- 18:21Speaker 2: actually did pretty damn good. I have to give her
- 18:24Speaker 2: credit for that. Oh she she wasn't really pressured after
- 18:30Speaker 2: that for what she said up there. She said she's
- 18:33Speaker 2: gonna be great on border security. When Lester Holt asked
- 18:37Speaker 2: her about where why she doesn't go to the border,
- 18:40Speaker 2: she laughingly said, oh, I've never been to Europe. I mean,
- 18:45Speaker 2: we need seriousness in the White House, and if she's
- 18:50Speaker 2: gonna be the nominee, next week's the debate or actually
- 18:54Speaker 2: two weeks from now is a debate. We've got to
- 18:57Speaker 2: see substance in there, because she's basically been coronated as
- 19:03Speaker 2: the president right now. I mean, where is President Biden
- 19:06Speaker 2: that he looks so sad leaving even Air Force one
- 19:10Speaker 2: right now, and even at the DNC, he just looks lost.
- 19:15Speaker 2: I think he's pretty piste off. They pushed him out,
- 19:19Speaker 2: and I'm sure that's another reason why I TOLDSI is
- 19:24Speaker 2: signing with Trumbia because what she'd thought about the Democrats
- 19:27Speaker 2: doing the fighting. Who's gonna we knew who was coming,
- 19:35Speaker 2: but who's gonna really be okay with that when it
- 19:40Speaker 2: comes to November? Will they really trust Kamala Paris to
- 19:44Speaker 2: run the country? And I don't think it's any of
- 19:49Speaker 2: the iss to you know, not racist. It's not seconds
- 19:54Speaker 2: to say things based on her record, which is what
- 20:00Speaker 2: gathered in twenty twenty, which is what people should be doing.
- 20:03Speaker 2: If they're gonna they're gonna latter her as this nominee,
- 20:08Speaker 2: give her some scrutiny, scrutinize her alsof I like that
- 20:13Speaker 2: Lester Holt asked her why wasn't she at the border.
- 20:18Speaker 2: Her administration, the the Biden Harris administration, is responsible for
- 20:24Speaker 2: what happened in Afghanistan three years ago. Has anybody asked
- 20:30Speaker 2: her about her role in that has em When he
- 20:35Speaker 2: asked her why she didn't really even show up to
- 20:39Speaker 2: support Natanyau, just to visit with him one of your
- 20:43Speaker 2: biggest allies Israel, and you barely get to see him,
- 20:47Speaker 2: make an effort to see him, I can't sit right
- 20:52Speaker 2: with me. So it was a great speech on Thursday night.
- 20:56Speaker 2: It was very very humanized. I think there was a
- 21:00Speaker 2: lot of humanity in that, and I think that's also
- 21:03Speaker 2: good to show. But when it came to her talking
- 21:07Speaker 2: about the issues at hand, I just I didn't feel
- 21:15Speaker 2: she was strong enough at convincing us she would keep
- 21:17Speaker 2: our borders safe. But one last note, to be very
- 21:28Speaker 2: fair here, there were USA chants at the DNC, and
- 21:35Speaker 2: that was a great takeaway I had because no matter
- 21:40Speaker 2: we can talk about their politics all that to hear
- 21:42Speaker 2: the crowd say Usa, Usa, USA. I wish the rioters
- 21:47Speaker 2: and the protesters would listen to the party that they
- 21:51Speaker 2: are now protesting and literally try to break through to
- 21:56Speaker 2: get to and cause harmat I wish those protesters and
- 22:05Speaker 2: writers wouldn't be so angry all the time, but have
- 22:08Speaker 2: that USA mentality as well. On that note, I'm Alex
- 22:14Speaker 2: Garrett on the Alex Garrett Podcast Network. While WCBSA eighty
- 22:21Speaker 2: is no more, I hope to have one like up
- 22:28Speaker 2: on news for us on the Alex Garrett Podcast Network
