- Lucas: Welcome back to the show. I am Lucas, and this is Learn Dutch with Fexingo. Luna: And I am Luna. We are ready to cook again. Lucas: We have been practicing a lot of kitchen verbs lately. Last week we talked about baking a cake. Luna: Yes. Baking a taart. But today we need to do the steps before that. Lucas: Exactly. You cannot bake without preparing the ingredients first. Let us start with cheese. Luna: I like cheese. What is the word for grating? Lucas: The verb is rasp. To grate. So you say: Ik rasp de kaas. Luna: Ik rasp de kaas. Lucas: Perfect. Slowly again. Ik rasp de kaas. Luna: Ik rasp de kaas. It sounds nice. Lucas: It does. You are grating the cheese. Now imagine you are making pasta or a potato dish. Luna: I would use a grater. A raspaard. Lucas: Good. But focus on the action. Ik rasp de kaas. Say it one more time. Luna: Ik rasp de kaas. Yes. I feel very professional. Lucas: You are doing great. Now let us move to the bowl. We need to mix something. Luna: Mixing? Like batter? Beslag? Lucas: Yes. The word is mengen. To mix. So we say: Ik meng het beslag. Luna: Ik meng het beslag. Lucas: Very good. Repeat it slowly. Ik meng het beslag. Luna: Ik meng het beslag. I am mixing the batter now. Lucas: Keep going. Mix it well. Ik meng het beslag. Luna: Ik meng het beslag. This is my favorite part. Lucas: I can hear the smile in your voice. But wait. Do you have enough cups? Luna: Cups? For measuring? Lucas: Yes. How many cups do you need? In Dutch, we ask: Hoeveel kopjes heb je nodig? Luna: Hoeveel kopjes heb je nodig? Lucas: Let us break it down. Hoeveel means how much or how many. Kopjes means little cups. Luna: Heb je nodig means do you need. Right? Lucas: Exactly. Hoeveel kopjes heb je nodig? Try it again. Luna: Hoeveel kopjes heb je nodig? That was tricky but I got it. Lucas: You did. It is a useful question when someone asks for help in the kitchen. Luna: I asked myself that earlier. I needed three kopjes. Lucas: Okay. Now look at your hands. Are they clean? Luna: My hands are clean. But what about the tool? Lucas: The whisk. The garde. We say: De garde is schoon. Luna: De garde is schoon. Lucas: Schoon means clean. Clean dishes, clean hands, clean whisk. De garde is schoon. Luna: De garde is schoon. I washed it just now. Lucas: Good hygiene is important. Now, are you done? Luna: Am I done? With the preparation? Lucas: Yes. When everything is ready, you say: Het is klaar. Luna: Het is klaar. Lucas: Klaar means finished or ready. Het is klaar. Say it with pride. Luna: Het is klaar! It is finished! Lucas: That is the feeling. All set. Ready to go into the oven or onto the plate. Luna: I am hungry now. Can we eat? Lucas: Not yet. We need to review. Let us put it all together. Start with the cheese. Luna: Ik rasp de kaas. Lucas: Now the mixing. Luna: Ik meng het beslag. Lucas: The question about quantity. Luna: Hoeveel kopjes heb je nodig? Lucas: The state of the tool. Luna: De garde is schoon. Lucas: And finally, the result. Luna: Het is klaar. Lucas: Bravo. You remembered every phrase. That is excellent progress. Luna: Thank you, Lucas. It feels easier when we repeat them slowly. Lucas: Repetition is the key. Your brain needs to hear it multiple times. Luna: I will practice these while I make dinner tonight. Lucas: Do that. And remember, Fexingo is here to help you every step of the way. Luna: If you want to support the show, there is a link below.
