- 1:34on our season five, episode number 23 and
- 1:37show 23.
- 1:38It's episode number six, excuse me.
- 1:40And it's all about how we understand relationships,
- 1:43connection and respect.
- 1:45Hey, everyone, if you don't know who I
- 1:46am by now, I'm John C.
- 1:48Morley.
- 1:49And welcome to Inspirations For Your Life.
- 1:52I'm a serial entrepreneur, engineer, marketing specialist, video
- 1:56producer, podcast host, coach, keynote speaker, graduate student,
- 2:01passionate lifelong learner, and now so grateful to
- 2:06be a published author in New Jersey.
- 2:09So this is a master build.
- 2:11Your life with discipline, growth, and ownership.
- 2:16And it is great to have you here
- 2:17with me today.
- 2:18So I'm diving deep into understanding relationships, connection,
- 2:23and of course, respect.
- 2:25If you've ever wanted deeper friendships, stronger business
- 2:30partnerships, or better family bonds, or more meaningful
- 2:34connections in general in life, this episode is
- 2:38exactly what you need.
- 2:40I'm breaking down 30 powerful principles that will
- 2:44transform how you relate to people, build trust,
- 2:48and create relationships that last.
- 2:51This isn't theory, guys.
- 2:52This is real world wisdom I'm sharing about
- 2:55connection that builds lasting bonds.
- 2:59Let's kick it off.
- 3:00All right.
- 3:01Number one, communicate clearly because people can't read
- 3:05your mind.
- 3:06And speaking with precision prevents confusion from destroying
- 3:11what you're trying to build.
- 3:13Most relationships break up oftentimes because of, well,
- 3:19bad communication, misunderstandings.
- 3:23Number two, listen actively to understand people instead
- 3:28of just waiting for your turn to talk
- 3:30because true listening shows respect and opens doors
- 3:34that silence keeps closed.
- 3:36Now, the thing is a lot of people
- 3:38that do this wait for somebody to be
- 3:40quiet and then they try to chime in,
- 3:42but they haven't been paying attention to what
- 3:44you're saying.
- 3:45They just know they want to get in
- 3:46edgewise, right?
- 3:47Number three, show empathy when others struggle because
- 3:51seeing their pain and acknowledging it creates connection
- 3:56that words alone cannot simply achieve.
- 4:00Number four, guys, respect boundaries and honor the
- 4:04space people need because pushing past their limits
- 4:08breaks trust faster than any mistake ever could.
- 4:12Number five, build trust gradually through consistency because
- 4:17trust isn't given in a moment.
- 4:20It's earned through repeat actions that prove you're
- 4:23reliable and accountable.
- 4:26Number six, guys, avoid, avoid, avoid toxic dynamics
- 4:32that drain your energy because staying in harmful
- 4:35relationships steals your time, your joy, and peace
- 4:39from everything else you want.
- 4:42Number seven, support others with honesty and care
- 4:47because helping people without judgment shows them they
- 4:51matter and strengthens the bond between you and
- 4:54them.
- 4:55Number eight, give honest feedback even when it's
- 5:02hard because the real help comes from truth
- 5:07and pretending everything is fine keeps people stuck
- 5:10and that's a problem.
- 5:13Number nine, stay patient with people and with
- 5:17the process.
- 5:19Everyone's learning as well as you are because
- 5:21everyone grows at different paces and speeds and
- 5:25rushing them breaks their confidence in you and
- 5:28it just makes the relationship have to keep
- 5:32starting all over again or it ends it.
- 5:34Number 10, avoid unnecessary conflict because you see
- 5:37fighting over small things wastes energy that could
- 5:41build something bigger and stronger together.
- 5:46So why don't we try that next time?
- 5:47That'd be really cool, right?
- 5:48Number 11, build strong networks by connecting with
- 5:52people intentionally because the right relationships open doors
- 5:57you cannot unlock alone.
- 6:01I was having a conversation with someone today
- 6:04referred by another podcaster and great to hear
- 6:09his accomplishments, great to hear my accomplishments, and
- 6:12we decided to stay in touch but there
- 6:16wasn't a direct connect at the present moment,
- 6:19which is okay.
- 6:22It's important to keep the bridges open, right?
- 6:25You don't wanna burn a bridge and there's
- 6:28no rush to cross a bridge.
- 6:31You don't have to rush.
- 6:32Just don't burn the bridge, okay?
- 6:34Because once you do that, you can't go
- 6:37back.
- 6:37Well, you can try, but rebuilding it is
- 6:40like virtually impossible.
- 6:42You can, but it will take a lot
- 6:44of humble pie and a lot more, guys.
- 6:46Number 12, be dependable so people know you'll
- 6:50show up when you say you will because
- 6:52reliability is the foundation of trust in every
- 6:56single relationship.
- 6:57You might say, John, what does it matter
- 6:59if I show up or not?
- 7:01If I count on you and you're not
- 7:03there, it looks bad on you.
- 7:08It definitely looks bad on me if other
- 7:10people were counting on you because I said
- 7:13you were gonna be there, looks bad on
- 7:15me.
- 7:16So I think a lot of times people
- 7:21get forced into commitments like volunteering and other
- 7:26types of things because they're guilted into it,
- 7:29but it's not something that comes from their
- 7:31heart.
- 7:32And I wanna tell you tonight that I've
- 7:35been down that path.
- 7:37Oh yeah, I'm sure.
- 7:38John will do it.
- 7:38He'll help us.
- 7:39I remember a lady, probably about four years
- 7:44ago, not gonna mention her name because that's
- 7:47not good school.
- 7:49And it was one of the not-for
- 7:51-profits that I belonged to.
- 7:53And I remember her saying, oh, well, get
- 7:56John, he'll volunteer.
- 7:57He has all that experience.
- 7:59He has a print shop.
- 7:59He could do all that kind of stuff.
- 8:04And when my name got volunteer, they said,
- 8:06well, what do you think, John?
- 8:06I said, I'll be happy to help you
- 8:08for a reasonable fee.
- 8:12Oh yeah, I'm not here to do it
- 8:14for free.
- 8:14I'm sorry about that.
- 8:17And you don't need to apologize for that.
- 8:21You give what you can give, but don't
- 8:23give more just because you're trying to impress
- 8:26somebody else.
- 8:28I used to think that was the name
- 8:29of the game many years ago.
- 8:30It's not.
- 8:31And burnout happens because you overcommit yourself and
- 8:36then that becomes a real nightmare.
- 8:37All right.
- 8:40And you might say to me, John, well,
- 8:41I promised this person and I'm a legion
- 8:47to them.
- 8:47Well, that's great.
- 8:48But that doesn't mean that they can run
- 8:51your doorstep off.
- 8:52That doesn't mean that you have to say
- 8:53yes to everything that they ask.
- 8:56Okay.
- 8:56A lot of friends say no to other
- 8:59friends because they don't wanna get involved with
- 9:02that.
- 9:02They don't wanna do that, right?
- 9:04It's not personal.
- 9:05It's just their own way.
- 9:10And you can't chastise somebody.
- 9:12You can't belittle somebody because they didn't wanna
- 9:14help you.
- 9:16It doesn't matter whether I wanna stay home
- 9:19and chill or whether I have other things
- 9:22to do like study or go to school.
- 9:24It doesn't matter.
- 9:26What matters is that I am good to
- 9:32myself.
- 9:34A lot of times people don't do that
- 9:37because they get afraid of what the other
- 9:39person is gonna say.
- 9:39So the person was like, oh, yeah, ask
- 9:41John, he'll be able to volunteer and do
- 9:43that.
- 9:44And I looked at her and I said,
- 9:45I'll be happy to maybe give you like
- 9:49half hour or something and go over something,
- 9:52but I will give you a good price.
- 9:55Unfortunately, I can't give all my time for
- 9:57that.
- 9:58I'm sorry.
- 10:01And they look at me and I was
- 10:03like, I'm sorry.
- 10:04I mean, I didn't volunteer.
- 10:06I was volunteered and I can't do that.
- 10:11And when you say no, they put that
- 10:15guilt flag up.
- 10:16And you're like, oh, and the past of
- 10:18it.
- 10:18Oh, you know what?
- 10:18I gotta put that guilt flag down.
- 10:20I'm just gonna do it.
- 10:20Now, you know what I said?
- 10:21You know what, John?
- 10:23No, no, no.
- 10:25Because see, when I say no, I empower
- 10:27myself to say yes to myself.
- 10:31That's not an easy thing, guys.
- 10:35It's similar to peer pressure, but it's on
- 10:37the adult level.
- 10:39And adults have this very uncanny way of
- 10:44trying to guilt you into doing something.
- 10:48It could be donating money.
- 10:50It could be donating your time.
- 10:53The key is to recognize it.
- 10:55Once you've recognized it, then decide how much
- 10:59you're gonna give.
- 11:01Don't let somebody else predicate what you're gonna
- 11:03give or not give.
- 11:05Because in the end of the day, you're
- 11:08gonna be unhappy because you gave more.
- 11:12We've always talked about having our cup be
- 11:14full.
- 11:17If suddenly our cup is empty, not only
- 11:21can we not give to others, we can't
- 11:24sustain our own living, our own self.
- 11:27I think that's what a lot of people
- 11:29don't get, is that everyone has a life.
- 11:32Everyone has the right and privilege to their
- 11:36own choices.
- 11:40And don't dare let anybody guilt you because
- 11:42that person is using that guilt, is using
- 11:47that tactic to get you to commit.
- 11:50I don't do that.
- 11:52When I want help, I'm like, hey, would
- 11:53you help me out?
- 11:54I don't guilt somebody.
- 11:56I don't do that.
- 11:58But a lot of organizers, a lot of
- 12:00charity people, they do that.
- 12:02Even some churches do that, right?
- 12:04Giving money and things like that, they guilt
- 12:07you.
- 12:08That's no way to treat somebody.
- 12:11If you want to give from the heart,
- 12:12whether it's money, whether it's time, whether it's
- 12:15your resources, then do it.
- 12:17But don't allow somebody, I don't care whether
- 12:21they're younger than you, they're older than you,
- 12:23don't you dare let them manipulate you or
- 12:27put you down because you're not volunteering or
- 12:30because you're not helping them or because you're
- 12:32not giving them money or because a million
- 12:35other things, right?
- 12:37Don't fall into that trap.
- 12:39And when something like that happens, it's a
- 12:42good time to change the conversation.
- 12:45Well, look at the time.
- 12:47I got to get going.
- 12:49Well, we were talking about, yeah, we'll have
- 12:50to talk about another time.
- 12:52And you're out.
- 12:53And that gets you out.
- 12:54And those other people in the circle, oh,
- 12:56yeah, look at the time.
- 12:57Where do you have to go?
- 13:00Then everybody tries to use that excuse.
- 13:02And people are like really putting them on
- 13:05the stage.
- 13:06Like, well, where do you have to go?
- 13:08Well, I got to go home.
- 13:09And do what?
- 13:12When somebody gets that in your face, it's
- 13:14time to say the words goodbye.
- 13:18Goodbye.
- 13:21Number 13, guys, remember to show appreciation regularly
- 13:26because acknowledging what people do makes them feel
- 13:30valued and motivates them to keep investing in
- 13:33who?
- 13:34You.
- 13:35Yeah, you.
- 13:37Stay present, guys, in conversations without letting your
- 13:42mind wander because people notice when you're truly
- 13:47there.
- 13:48And that builds connection.
- 13:52I know a lot of people, you've been
- 13:54in a conversation, and their eyes are like,
- 13:57oh, glassy.
- 13:58And they're not really paying attention.
- 13:59But as soon as you stop, oh.
- 14:00And so what I want to know is,
- 14:03where'd that come from?
- 14:04How does that relate to what we're talking
- 14:06about?
- 14:07It's rude.
- 14:08But people do it all the time.
- 14:11Those are people I'm not going to hang
- 14:12around.
- 14:13That's obvious.
- 14:15Number 15, guys, and this is a hard
- 14:18one for a lot of people.
- 14:20You know what it is?
- 14:22Avoid distractions when talking to people because your
- 14:27phone or your laptop stealing your attention tells
- 14:31them they're not the most important thing right
- 14:34now.
- 14:34They're not important enough.
- 14:37If I've ever forgot to silence my cell
- 14:39phone and I'm in a meeting, I say,
- 14:41excuse me, let me just silence my cell
- 14:43phone.
- 14:43I apologize.
- 14:48I think a lot of people have not
- 14:52developed that self-control.
- 14:55They don't know that you could put your
- 14:57phone and do not disturb, right?
- 14:59Which I do before every show.
- 15:04But people continuously get manipulated over and over
- 15:07again.
- 15:08Why?
- 15:09Because they can.
- 15:11And because they have not been able to
- 15:13recognize the patterns to avoid.
- 15:18Tricky, guys.
- 15:20Very, very tricky.
- 15:21Number 16, understand perspectives before you judge.
- 15:27Because seeing where someone else stands helps you
- 15:31connect with them instead of pushing them away.
- 15:38It's all about looking at life through the
- 15:41other person's classes or walking life in their
- 15:45shoes for a little while.
- 15:47And when you do, you start to realize,
- 15:50well, wait a minute.
- 15:53Maybe I wasn't really rational about that.
- 15:55Maybe I wasn't really fair about that.
- 15:57If I had that situation, I don't know
- 16:00how I could do that.
- 16:01I don't know how that would be possible,
- 16:06right?
- 16:08That's a very important point.
- 16:12Number 17, guys, I want you to build
- 16:16mutual respect by treating others with dignity.
- 16:20Because respect earned through kindness creates bonds that
- 16:27will last forever.
- 16:29You're not kind because you're expecting something from
- 16:32them, whether it's money or something else, material,
- 16:35right?
- 16:37Not doing that for that reason, I hope.
- 16:41But a lot of people do it for
- 16:42that reason.
- 16:43Because they're professional manipulators.
- 16:47And that's not something you should be proud
- 16:48of.
- 16:50That's someone who basically knows how to push
- 16:52people's buttons.
- 16:55It doesn't allow someone to be who they
- 16:57are.
- 16:58They become a puppet controller.
- 17:01The sad part is, most people don't even
- 17:04know they're being controlled.
- 17:06And when the strings get pulled, they respond.
- 17:08Eep, eep, eep, bop, boop, bop, right?
- 17:10They respond.
- 17:12On command, without even thinking, they've learned how
- 17:17to push your buttons.
- 17:18They've learned what's going to get you to
- 17:21react.
- 17:23They've learned that when they say certain things
- 17:25and they keep doing it, it's going to
- 17:27make you feel bad about yourself that you
- 17:29haven't done enough.
- 17:31That's pitiful, guys.
- 17:33Number 18.
- 17:34You ready for number 18?
- 17:37Number 18 is one that a lot of
- 17:39people probably would not agree with me on
- 17:40because it's not easy.
- 17:42And it's something that has been going on
- 17:44for years.
- 17:45And many people feel that it's something to
- 17:47pass time and that it's okay to do
- 17:49it.
- 17:51But I'm here to tell you, it's not
- 17:53okay to do it.
- 17:54Regardless of what your age is.
- 17:56And that is, ladies and gentlemen, avoid gossip.
- 18:03Because you see, talking negatively about others behind
- 18:07their backs destroys trust and makes people question
- 18:12your own integrity.
- 18:16Do I really want to hang around with
- 18:18this guy or this lady?
- 18:20Is this how he acts?
- 18:22Is this his level of integrity?
- 18:24Do I want to be with this person?
- 18:25Is it the kind of company I want
- 18:28to be part of?
- 18:29No.
- 18:31No.
- 18:35I know that's not an easy thing for
- 18:37people to understand.
- 18:40But once you have felt it once, you're
- 18:47going to be more aware of it.
- 18:48And chances are it may only happen to
- 18:49you one more time.
- 18:51But you've got to be aware of that
- 18:53situation.
- 18:54Number 19.
- 18:56Please encourage others when they doubt themselves.
- 18:59Because your words can lift them up when
- 19:02they feel stuck.
- 19:02And remind them they're capable of anything.
- 19:08Your words and thoughts could be the difference
- 19:12of someone becoming a success or someone just
- 19:15waiting on the bench for a coach to
- 19:17call them into play.
- 19:21A word, a thought, a feeling.
- 19:26Number 20.
- 19:27Stay positive even when things go hard.
- 19:30Because you see negativity spreads.
- 19:32And your energy sets the tone for how
- 19:34everyone feels around you.
- 19:38It's like if you think about a bottle
- 19:42of perfume or men's cologne.
- 19:45The minute you open it, the minute you
- 19:46spray that a little bit from the atomizer,
- 19:48right?
- 19:49Within less than a few minutes, the whole
- 19:51room smells like what?
- 19:54That island or that scent.
- 19:59Same thing happens.
- 20:01Your energy could travel several feet around you.
- 20:04People can feel your energy.
- 20:07People can feel your authenticness.
- 20:09People can feel when you're conning them.
- 20:12They may not respond right away.
- 20:14But they don't feel easy around you.
- 20:18Number 21.
- 20:19Be solution-focused.
- 20:22When problems arise because focusing on fixes instead
- 20:26of blames moves everyone forward instead of keeping
- 20:29them stuck.
- 20:31I said this once.
- 20:32I'll say it many times before.
- 20:34Again, if you're not part of the solution,
- 20:38unfortunately, you're part of the problem.
- 20:42Number 22.
- 20:44Resolve issues calmly without letting emotions explode.
- 20:50Because you see, anger destroys what patience can
- 20:54repair.
- 20:55And calm heads create better outcomes.
- 20:58Number 23.
- 20:59Build meaningful connections by investing time because shallow
- 21:03relationships fade while the deep ones will grow
- 21:05stronger with attention and effort.
- 21:08And they will give you the rewards from
- 21:10life.
- 21:11Number 24.
- 21:13Invest time, folks, in relationships consistently.
- 21:16Because you see, people feel valued when you
- 21:19show up and regularly.
- 21:21And that builds loyalty over months and years.
- 21:23We were having a conversation.
- 21:25It was actually on LinkedIn.
- 21:26Somebody was saying something about people care about
- 21:28what you do for them.
- 21:29No, they don't care what you do for
- 21:30them.
- 21:32I said a caveat.
- 21:33We need to add on.
- 21:33That's important.
- 21:34But we need to add on the fact
- 21:35that people will always remember, not what you
- 21:39did for them, how you made them feel,
- 21:42how you made them feel.
- 21:44Number 25, guys.
- 21:45Stay consistent with people so they don't get
- 21:48frustrated.
- 21:49You won't change based on circumstances.
- 21:53Because reliability creates trust that will survive and
- 21:56outlast any hard times.
- 21:59Somebody once said what?
- 22:00Hard times never last.
- 22:02Tough people always will.
- 22:04Number 26.
- 22:05Integrity in interactions by doing what you say.
- 22:08Because honesty builds respect.
- 22:12And breaking promises breaks trust.
- 22:16It's a lot harder to build trust once
- 22:18you've destroyed it.
- 22:20Number 27.
- 22:21Avoid being selfish.
- 22:24And think about others, too.
- 22:25Because, you see, relationships die when one person
- 22:28takes everything and gives nothing back.
- 22:32Me first, you never.
- 22:34Or you second.
- 22:36But somehow the second never happens.
- 22:38So there's never enough for the other person.
- 22:43Sharing doesn't exist in that mentality.
- 22:45Number 28.
- 22:46Build loyalty by being there through the ups
- 22:49and the downs.
- 22:50Because, you see, people stick with those who
- 22:52stood by them when everything got hard.
- 22:58They didn't build friendship when things were easy.
- 23:01They built friendship when things were challenging, when
- 23:03things were hard.
- 23:07Number 29.
- 23:09Keep communication open so no one feels shut
- 23:12out.
- 23:12Because silence creates distance.
- 23:15And talking keeps bonds strong and alive.
- 23:18A good way to do this is having
- 23:20a conversation saying, hey, just so I'm clear
- 23:22about what you said.
- 23:24And you can repeat that back.
- 23:26People will be so not only impressed, but
- 23:32so filled with respect for you.
- 23:37Because of how you carried yourself.
- 23:43That's powerful, guys.
- 23:46People will have respect for you.
- 23:49They will have respect for you.
- 23:52Keeping communication open is not easy, folks.
- 23:55It's a two-way street.
- 23:59But it's important to make sure you're understood.
- 24:02And if you don't understand them and say,
- 24:04wait, I understand you're trying to share a
- 24:06problem.
- 24:07I'll be honest with you.
- 24:08I don't quite understand what you mean.
- 24:10And I want to understand.
- 24:11Or you might say something like, would you
- 24:13mind if I take notes on this?
- 24:15I want to make sure I understand everything
- 24:16correctly.
- 24:17People will be like, oh, yeah, sure.
- 24:21Number 30.
- 24:23Strengthen bonds by investing in the relationship regularly.
- 24:26Because, you see, connections fade without attention.
- 24:29And they grow stronger with consistent care.
- 24:37I'm not saying you have to spend hours.
- 24:38I'm saying you've got to nurture them a
- 24:40little bit.
- 24:41A little bit.
- 24:46And that little bit will grow on you
- 24:49and on them.
- 24:51You'll feel good.
- 24:53You'll create a bond.
- 24:56And you'll start to realize that you trust
- 25:02the other person.
- 25:02And they trust you.
- 25:03But, you see, these things don't happen superficially
- 25:06overnight.
- 25:09That's not trust.
- 25:12That's what I'll call lab-grown manipulation.
- 25:15It's not a lab.
- 25:16But you get my point.
- 25:18It's fabricated.
- 25:19It's not truth.
- 25:22It's done to push your buttons.
- 25:24It's due to get a result from you
- 25:26without the greater good of all concerned.
- 25:34Without the greater good of all concerned.
- 25:35That's something I hope will open up a
- 25:38lot of your eyes and minds.
- 25:42Do you listen to others when they talk?
- 25:45Or are you always trying to interject?
- 25:47Well, well, I got to quit.
- 25:49No, be quiet.
- 25:50Listen to what they have to say.
- 25:54Listen to what they have to say.
- 25:55That is very, very important.
- 25:58If you can't be quiet for just a
- 26:00few minutes, how can you ever expect someone
- 26:03to like you or to trust you?
- 26:05If you can't spend a few minutes to
- 26:08understand what's on their mind, why should they
- 26:12give you a few minutes to learn what's
- 26:16on your mind?
- 26:17It's a two-way street, folks.
- 26:19It absolutely is a two-way street.
- 26:21And you've got to make the decision now
- 26:23that you want to be in a two
- 26:28-way relationship, not a one-way street.
- 26:31That's important, guys.
- 26:33If you're on manipulation street, you might get
- 26:37some things, but you're also going to harm
- 26:41the relationship over the long-term.
- 26:44I'm talking about romantic, non-romantic, platonic, non
- 26:47-platonic, however you want to think about it.
- 26:49That's the truth, guys.
