- 0:02Today we're going to be talking about a very compelling SpaceX
- 0:07and NASA mission that aims to explore an asteroid called
- 0:11Psyche. How This asteroid isn't just any
- 0:14old space rock, though it's largely metallic and resembles
- 0:17the Earth score. And with the launch slated as
- 0:20soon as this Thursday from NASA's Kennedy Space Center in
- 0:23Florida, the Psyche mission is expected to open new Frontiers
- 0:27and our understanding of planetary formation.
- 0:30I will be covering various aspects of this mission, from
- 0:33the spacecraft's journey to why this particular asteroid is so
- 0:37vital for scientific research. And you can also check out the

- 0:51Now the idea for exploring an asteroid may seem very
- 0:54futuristic, but the future is very close.
- 0:58NASA's Psyche mission has been in the works for quite some time
- 1:01with a year long delay, throwing a small wrench into the planning
- 1:04of this mission. And nevertheless, the spacecraft
- 1:07named after the asteroid it aims to explore is prepped and almost
- 1:10ready for its expedition. And the launch vehicle for this
- 1:13mission, SpaceX, is triple core Falcon Heavy rocket, which will
- 1:17propel the spacecraft on a six year, 2.2 billion mile journey.
- 1:25This is not just another mission, though, it's a first in
- 1:27many ways. Notably, it's the first time
- 1:29NASA is targeting an asteroid that isn't primarily rock or
- 1:33ice, and instead Psyche consists mostly of metal.
- 1:36And the mission could offer insights into the cores of
- 1:39terrestrial planets, including our own Earth.
- 1:43That's a scientific jackpot, considering that the Earth's
- 1:46core remains inaccessible for direct study.
- 1:49Now the countdown is on and the launch window is narrowing, and
- 1:52the Psyche mission has launched opportunities every day between
- 1:56October 12th and October 25th with a 20% chance of favorable
- 2:00weather conditions. NASA and SpaceX attorney October
- 2:0312th at precisely 10:16 AM Eastern Time for this much
- 2:10awaited liftoff. So what makes Psyche so special?
- 2:14Located about three times farther from the Sun than Earth,
- 2:18this asteroid could harbor secrets that shed light onto the
- 2:22core structure of terrestrial planets.
- 2:24Named after a Greek goddess, Psyche has fascinated scientists
- 2:27because of its uniqueness in the asteroid belt between Mars and
- 2:31Jupiter. And planetary formation is a
- 2:33very chaotic process, and Psyche could be the exposed core of a
- 2:38planet that never got the chance to form completely.
- 2:42Scientists theorize that it is composed mainly of nickel iron,
- 2:45which makes it different from other celestial bodies like
- 2:48Mars, Venus, and Earth that are abundant in iron oxides.
- 2:52And unlike these planets, Psyche doesn't appear to have much in
- 2:56the way of iron oxides, suggesting a different kind of
- 2:58planetary formation history. It's a 140 mile wide chunk of
- 3:03metal and rock, potentially offering a glimpse into the
- 3:08early solar system and the chaotic processes that go on in
- 3:13the formation of planets. Now when it comes to the Psyche
- 3:15spacecraft, the adage good things come in small packages is
- 3:19fitting though the spacecraft could cover the surface of a
- 3:22standard tennis court when it's solar razor deployed.
- 3:25What's inside is a compact treasure trove of scientific
- 3:28equipment designed to unlock the mysteries of this asteroid,
- 3:31Psyche and possibly of our solar system.
- 3:34But let's not forget the spacecraft itself is a marvel of
- 3:38modern engineering. Equipped to survive six year
- 3:42long journey to the vacuum space to reach its distant target, the
- 3:47first piece of equipment we should talk about is a
- 3:49magnetometer. This is not just a
- 3:51run-of-the-mill instrument, it's a specialized equipment to
- 3:54detect ancient magnetic fields. If Psyche does turn out to be
- 3:59the core of a long disintegrated planet, then traces of a
- 4:02magnetic field could provide game changing insights into
- 4:06planetary science. The magnetometer will scour the
- 4:09asteroid for such traces, potentially helping us
- 4:12understand the magnetic properties of celestial bodies
- 4:15that never really got the chance to become fully fledged planets.
- 4:20Now. Then there's the Gamma Ray and
- 4:21neutron spectrometer, another critical device on board.
- 4:26Its role is to perform a kind of elemental analysis of the
- 4:29asteroid. By detecting gamma rays and
- 4:31neutrons, this instrument can help us understand the chemical
- 4:35elements that make up Psyche, effectively deciphering its
- 4:38composition. This can answer questions like
- 4:41whether the asteroid is nickel or iron or other metals, and by
- 4:45extension shed light on the elements that make up planetary
- 4:49cores. Now, last but not least, a
- 4:52multispectral imager. This will capture detailed
- 4:55images of Psyche, but it goes far beyond simple photography.
- 4:59The imager will capture data across various wavelengths,
- 5:03allowing scientists to assess the mineral composition and
- 5:06topography of the asteroid intended with the other
- 5:08instruments. This imager completes a holistic
- 5:11tool kit for space exploration. Additionally, the Deep Space
- 5:15Orbital Communication System will experiment with long range
- 5:18laser communications technology, a pioneering step that could set
- 5:22the stage for future deep space missions.
- 5:25Now the mission timeline spans almost six years and covers an
- 5:29enormous distance. The spacecraft will use a solar
- 5:32electric propulsion system and get a gravity assist from Mars
- 5:35on its way, and upon arrival in 2029, it will spend around 26
- 5:41months studying the asteroid. The spacecraft is expected to
- 5:44begin transmitting images to Earth as soon as it detects the
- 5:47asteroid, allowing us a visual treat along with scientific
- 5:51data. Delays have plagued this
- 5:53mission, with the original launch date in August of 2022
- 5:56being pushed back. The reasons include software
- 5:59issues and operational challenges, and to tackle these,
- 6:02NASA added more team members and even revised as Hybrid Work
- 6:06policy to increase onsite collaboration.
- 6:10And all the hard work seems to be paying off at NASA, SpaceX
- 6:13and the Psyche. Mission managers recently
- 6:15conducted a Flight Readiness Review certifying the mission
- 6:18for final launch preparations. And with last minute simulations
- 6:22and fine tuning, the spacecraft appears set for its
- 6:25groundbreaking journey to explore the metal rich asteroid.
- 6:29The launch window has been adjusted to be between October
- 6:3312th and October 25th, giving the teams more time to complete
- 6:37flight ready checks and ensure everything is in order.
- 6:40We're now closer than ever to uncovering the secrets that
- 6:44could redefine our understanding of planetary cores in the
- 6:48formation of rocky planets like Earth and also our solar system.
