- 0:11Hello friends. Sean, here it is Thursday, it's
- 0:15the 8th of February and that is actually Boy Scout Day.
- 0:20Did you realise that today's Boy Scout day?
- 0:22There is so much to celebrate about being a Scout.
- 0:25I don't know if you or someone you love was a Scout or is a
- 0:28Scout. I was a Scout when I was a young
- 0:32tyke and I had so many good times.
- 0:35I remember boy camping out in the pouring rain, tying so many
- 0:40knots to build our campsite that were just impossible to untie
- 0:44when the rain had dried. But we learned so many things,
- 0:47and I was reading about Scouts, and they said scouts are
- 0:51trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind,
- 0:55obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean and reverent.
- 1:01Boy, if the world had more scouts that behaved like that or
- 1:04people that behaved like that, it would be a better place,
- 1:08wouldn't it? So today on Scout Day, why not
- 1:11do a good turn for somebody else that's doing something for
- 1:14someone else where you get no benefit from it at all?
- 1:18That sounds like a good little challenge.
- 1:19Why don't we see if we can do that, friends?
- 1:21Why don't we see if we can do something for someone else when
- 1:24it actually has no benefit to us?
- 1:27I'm up for the challenge. I hope you are too Happy Scout
- 1:30Day. But today, besides being Scout
- 1:33Day, is also the day that we have a relatively short reading
- 1:37today, where David is forced to do the unthinkable to stay away
- 1:43from Saul. He's forced to take up residence
- 1:47with the Philistines. Yep, that's right.
- 1:50Let's read it together. First Samuel Chapter 27.
- 2:03But David kept thinking to himself, Someday Saul is going
- 2:07to get me. The best thing I can do is
- 2:10escape to the Philistines. Then Saul will stop hunting for
- 2:14me in Israelite territory and I will finally be safe.
- 2:19Sir David took his 600 men and went over and joined Akish, son
- 2:24of Mayoc, the King of Gath. David and his men and their
- 2:29families settled there with Achish at Gath.
- 2:33David brought his two wives along with him, Ahinoam from
- 2:37Jezreel and Abigail, Nabal's widow from Carmel.
- 2:42Word soon reached Saul that David had fled to Gath, so he
- 2:46stopped hunting for him. One day, David said to Akish.
- 2:51If it is alright with you, we would rather live in one of the
- 2:54country towns instead of here in the royal city.
- 2:58So Akish gave him the town of Ziklag, which still belongs to
- 3:02the kings of Judah to this day, and they lived there, among the
- 3:07Philistines for a year and four months.
- 3:10David and his men spent their time raiding their Gesha Rites,
- 3:14their Jerseyites and the Amalekites, people who had lived
- 3:18near Shur toward the land of Egypt since ancient times.
- 3:22David did not leave one person alive in the villages he
- 3:25attacked. He took the sheep, goats,
- 3:28cattle, donkeys, camels and clothing before returning home
- 3:33to see King Akash. Where did you make your raid
- 3:37today? Akish would ask and David would
- 3:40reply against the South of Judah, the Jeremie Lights and
- 3:45the Kenites. No one was left alive to come to
- 3:48Gath and tell where he had really been.
- 3:51This happened again and again while he was living among the
- 3:54Philistines. Akash believed David and thought
- 3:57to himself by now the people of Israel must hate him bitterly.
- 4:03Now he will have to stay here and serve me forever.
- 4:17Lord, today we offer ourselves to you.
- 4:20Where would you have us go? What would you have us do?
- 4:24Where is that corner? In our lives?
- 4:27In our part of the world where Your grace is most needed?
- 4:31Holy Spirit, prompt us, Move us toward your destination.
- 4:38Lord, continually shape our hearts and attune our conscience
- 4:42and our ears. That we would hear your voice.
- 4:45That we would feel your prompting, and that we would act
- 4:49on behalf of your Kingdom and thank you our God.
- 4:55That even if we are not wise enough or not well enough
- 4:59attuned to your voice to do your will at every moment in this
- 5:04day, that you love us nonetheless, that you forgive
- 5:07us. That you draw us into Your
- 5:11embrace because of what Jesus has done, So that we imperfect
- 5:16people can be in your presence, our perfect God.
- 5:21Thank you for your love for us and your inclusion of us in your
- 5:25family. It blows our mind and we are so
- 5:28grateful and we can pray all of this in the name of Jesus.
- 5:33Amen.
